Garden Grove, our friendly neighbor to the south, is well worth a visit. It’s a diverse community with an abundance of vibrant restaurants and shops. It’s also a destination for authentic Vietnamese cuisine—you won’t nd be er anywhere in the country. Little Saigon  Explore the shops and restaurants along Brookhurst Street, one of the main thoroughfares for the district. That’s where you’ll find Tan Hoang Huong (thhsandwiches.com), known for its banh mi, a sandwich traditionally made with French-style baguettes. Pork or chicken is commonly added along with shredded carrots, hot peppers, and cilantro. Searching for a great pho spot? MichelinBib Gourmand-recommended Pho 79 (pho79.com) is a sure thing—their long-simmered broth is rich and fragrant. Don’t forget to pick up a sweet Vietnamese iced coffee for the road. Little Saigon is around the perimeter of a mile-square block bordered by Bolsa Ave., Brookhurst St., Westminster Ave., and Magnolia St. which includes areas of the cities of Garden Grove and Westminster.

 This unique dining destination is named after the repurposed shipping containers used to construct the communal dining space. The outdoor food court offers creative fare from small, indie food vendors. The Penalty Box, owned by former Anaheim Ducks superstar Teemu Selanne, offers burgers, hot dogs, and fries, and Bird Talk serves up gourmet wings and chicken sandwiches. Beachwood Brewing pours craft beer made in Long Beach, and Al Dente specializes in flatbreads and build-your-own pasta dishes. The complex often hosts live music and family-friendly events, but even if there’s nothing special on the schedule, there are plenty of cozy spots to hang out and enjoy the company of family and friends. 12900 Euclid St., Garden Grove, CA 92840; steelcraftlb.com/steelcraft-garden-grove Nova Kitchen and Bar This modern Japanese Asian fusion spot is a perfect place to meet up with friends. The Anaheim Fall Festival and Halloween Parade is a beloved local tradition that marks its 101st anniversary in 2024. The festival, which began as the Halloween Carnival and Festival in 1923, is now a popular community celebration featuring game booths, entertainment, live music, face painting, and storytelling. The festivities also include costume contests, including one for the furry members of the family. Anaheim’s Annual Halloween Parade Celebrates 100 Years Anaheim’s first Halloween parade knocked it out of the park, snagging Major League Baseball’s most iconic player to serve as the grand marshal. On October 30th, 1924, Babe Ruth joined the procession of the inaugural parade along with baseball great Walter Johnson, catching the attention of locals and visitors alike. What started as an idea to deter young pranksters during “spooky season” ended up having a massive cultural impact, and the 2024 parade will mark the 100th anniversary of Anaheim’s biggest Halloween celebration. The concept and execution of the first parade are largely credited to the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce in concert with

downtown store owners fed up with the pranks of the city’s youth. Today’s teen pranks—toilet papering trees, maybe a game of “ding dong ditch”—pale in comparison to what was happening across the nation as Halloween grew in popularity during the early 1900s. In an article titled “When Halloween Was All Tricks and No Treats,” in the October 27, 2017 issue of Smithsonian Magazine, author Lesley Bannatyne detailed some examples of the behavior recorded during this time: “Kids strung ropes across sidewalks to trip people in the dark, tied the doorknobs of opposing apartments together, mowed down shrubs, upset swill barrels, rattled or soaped windows, and, once, filled the streets of Catalina Island with boats.” The Anaheim parade was an attempt

Where can I see the parade? The parade steps off at the intersection of Anaheim Blvd and Broadway. It will head north on Anaheim Blvd and make a left turn onto and travel west for the length of Center Street Promenade, then exit onto Harbor Blvd, turning left. At Broadway, the parade will turn right and continue on Broadway to Walnut where public viewing will end. Free public viewing is available on city sidewalks along this route. Where can I park? Public parking is available in marked structures near downtown and parking on non-permit public streets may also be available along the route. Spaces fill up quickly and be sure to keep an eye out for signs noting which roads will be closed for the parade itself. What else should I know about viewing the parade? The parade route is about 1.5 miles long, so while it does get crowded, you should be able to find a spot for great viewing.

to channel youthful energy into more productive enterprises—and it worked. The procession of floats and costumed participants was a huge hit, and after the 1944 debut, the number of parade spectators swelled every year thereafter. The parade grew into the “Greatest Night Pageant West of the Mardi Gras,” and included specially designed floats, marching bands, equestrian units, children in Halloween costumes, and a costume breakfast. By the 1970s, the Orange County Register reported that it was regularly attracting 75,000 people. As Anaheim expanded beyond the original downtown center, attendance began to fall. But in 2012, the Anaheim Halloween Parade was revived. To revitalize the parade, a non-profit was formed and then bolstered by a new generation of neighbors keen on returning the community spirit and vintageinspired art direction to this beloved Anaheim tradition. In conjunction with local businesses, community members, and Disney, the Anaheim Halloween parade was relaunched in 2012 with a throwback theme that tapped into the parade’s heyday. It sparked renewed interest in the parade, and attendance is once again robust.

The center is outfitted with a 2,000-square-foot rooftop garden filled

with adaptive plants and herbs. The garden area is used to reclaim water and cool parts of the building. In addition, 3,000 square feet of solar panels line the roof and provide roughly 17 percent of the center’s energy. The building also has an on-site recycling center that turns food waste and kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost used for the gardens throughout The Anaheim Resort.  We aren’t the only ones who think our dining scene is incredible—the Anaheim area boasts more than 30 restaurants with Michelin recommendations. Two establishments have one star, eight have “Bib Gourmand” status (good quality, good value cooking), and another 24 were selected for inclusion in the guide based on their high-quality dishes. If you’re unfamiliar with Michelin and their coveted stars, a quick history: back in 1889, two French brothers, Andre and Edouard Michelin, founded a tire company. To encourage the growth of the auto industry (and therefore, sales) the brothers printed a guide filled with maps and travel tips. The guide grew over time, and in 1926, the first stars were awarded to restaurants. Initially, only one star was given, but five years later, the system was changed to zero to three stars and it remains so today. The guide now rates over 40,000 establishments across three continents. So what does it take to earn favor with the world’s toughest critics? Anonymous inspectors rate each spot using five criteria: the quality of products, mastery of flavor and cooking techniques, how the personality of the chef is represented in the dining experience, harmony of flavors, and consistency. Restaurants are never notified when inspectors will visit, and they return to each establishment multiple times to verify their initial assessment. While a rating of one to three stars is most coveted, just being included in the famed red book is an endorsement. These places are judged by the same five criteria used for starred and Bib Gourmand restaurants and are recognized as establishments that serve outstanding food.

Chef David Fuerte’s new Packing District steakhouse, En Familia, aims to bring the community together. You’ve had success in a wide variety of settings, from huge corporate venues to smaller, intimate spaces. What drew you to this location?  The moment I was introduced to the (now) En Familia restaurant space, I instantly visualized what it could become. I had been aware of the appeal of the Packing District, so I knew bringing a concept to this location was the right move. Back in the early days of the pandemic, you were one of the first restaurateurs to help your community, selling everything from medical-grade masks to bulk rice and beans. Obviously, your customers and neighbors matter to you. How do you see En Familia enriching the community?  Engaging with the community is extremely valuable to me. I believe that food is a common unifier and brings people of all backgrounds together. To “break bread” and the act of sharing a meal can have a lasting impression and is the basis for making great memories. As we were still building out En Familia, we kept a pulse on the local events in the area and we have been so honored by the warm welcome of locals and community leaders. The restaurant is both a steakhouse and brunch spot. Can you talk about the overall

vision for the food?  The steakhouse concept comes from my passion for open-fire cooking. As a child, I spent much of my upbringing in the ranches of Mexico and I have a deep respect and appreciation for the land and the elements. My connection to cooking comes from those early experiences and now I can share the ultimate quality of steak with our restaurant visitors since we own La Carniceria Wagyu, a luxury butcher shop in Brea, and soon, our second location in Costa Mesa. The cocktails and mocktails on your Instagram page look incredible. What goes into developing these drinks, and what ingredients might people be surprised to see?  Our beverage program offers drinks that are lively, colorful, and crafted with premium spirits, fresh herbs, and exotic fruits. The drinks are just as dynamic as the flavors of the menu. Together with our incredibly talented and creative Bar Manager Carlos Ramirez, we are able to provide an awesome artisanal experience. What do you love about Anaheim? What makes it special?  Anaheim is a destination for different cultures and an epicenter for travel in Southern California. I love that we can be a highlight of someone’s trip. That they can step inside our restaurant, feel the warmth, enjoy the ambiance, taste the food, and genuinely have a dining experience like no other and think, “Yes! We made the right decision!”

ANAHEIM PACKING HOUSE

 There’s nothing quite like The Packing District, a unique area that encompasses four historic landmarks and a lovely two-acre green space known as Farmers Park. The Packing District is anchored by the historic Anaheim Packing House, a former 1919 Anaheim Orange and Lemon Association Packing House. It’s one of the last remaining citrus packing warehouses in Orange County, and has been historically preserved and retrofitted as a market hall. The north anchor of the district is the Packard Building, which recently turned 100 years old. Just south of the Packing House is the MAKE Building, a former 1917 marmalade factory. Be sure to stop at Pali Wine Co’s tasting room to sample some of the best Central Coast Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Rounding out the southern border of the Packing District stands Villains Brewing Company and The Craftsman 1904. LAST WORD

TANIYA AHMED Ahmed opened Sunbliss Cafe in Anaheim Hills in June 2020. This spring, it ranked No. 6 on Yelp’s Top 100 Best Places to Eat in the U.S. by Colette Nguyen WHY DID YOU START SUNBLISS?

My grandma always said that it was better to serve than to be served. And I feel like in my upbringing, food is like our love language. It genuinely makes me happy seeing people try our food. WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR DRINKS?

I’ve always wanted to incorporate things from all the happiest memories in my life and my travels. The blue in our drinks actually comes from a flower I found when I was traveling in Thailand. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

I love boxing, pottery, and eating.

A simple caffe latte. But noncoffee would be our housemade chai because I’m a tea girl. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB?

This is my dream job. I built this place, and I worked hard. I love meeting customers face-to-face on my own, and I still do all the crazy wild stuff like marketing and business management—it’s legitimately my favorite thing.
