Famously known for the Rose Parade® and Rose Bowl Game®, one of the many things taken seriously in Pasadena is having fun. Much like Van Halen’s backyard parties of yesteryear, Pasadena’s social calendar is filled with bucket-list concerts, sporting events, festivals, theater, and art.

pasadenamag.com

Not far from the bustle of downtown LA, this lush urban oasis is a serene part of the metroplex that is carefully preserved and delicately restored. Allow the inspiring architecture and stunning botanical gardens to slow your pulse – it’s no accident that many Hollywood blockbusters are shot here. Perusing through Pasadena’s signature small boutiques, record and hobby shops, and flea markets might unearth something of a time capsule, with stories dating back over a hundred years. The food scene boasts a contrast of experiences, where trendy cafés and haute cuisine thrive next to longstanding roadhouses and classic Americana diners. After hours, the dinner crowd will find their way to the theater, comedy club, hidden speakeasies, sports bars, and watering holes on foot. No matter where you go or what you do, enjoy the spellbinding allure of Pasadena, California.

With a seating capacity of more than 90,000, it’s the perfect venue for high-profile concerts, summer music festivals,

soccer matches, and the world’s largest flea market. Check out the stadium’s new California High School Football Hall of Fame, or stroll around the 3.3-mile Rose Bowl Recreation Loop just before sunset to see the San Gabriel mountains painted in dazzling orange, pink, and purple hues. rosebowlstadium.com

Norton Simon Museum The private art collection of industrialist Norton Simon is, simply put, incredible. The museum houses more than 12,000 objects collected over a span of 30 years. Today, visitors can see roughly 1,000 pieces on display in the museum’s galleries and gardens. Take in European art spanning from the Renaissance to the 20th century, as well as of important pieces from India and Southeast Asia. If you’re looking for Modern and Contemporary Art, you’ll find examples from Europe and the United States as well. nortonsimon.org

Gamble House Gamble House was intricately designed in 1908 by Pasadena architects Greene & Greene for David and Mary Gamble. Many architects consider Gamble House the finest example of early 20th-century Craftsman architecture in the country, and visitors can tour the property to see the interiors, all preserved with their original furnishings. Trivia: If you’ve seen “Back to the Future,” you may recognize it as Doc Brown’s home in the film. gamblehouse.org

Kidspace Children’s Museum If you’re visiting with children 10 and under, Kidspace should be at the top of your to-do list. The indoor/outdoor space is designed to spark the imagination of young visitors. Explore science, art, and nature in more than 40 handson exhibits spread across 3.2 acres. than 300 years ago. The Huntington is also home to an impressive collection of rare books, manuscripts, and famous works of art. Highlights include a new exhibition on the life and work of celebrated science fiction author Octavia E. Butler, Mary Cassatt’s “Breakfast in Bed,” and the First Folio edition of Shakespeare. If you’re a fan of Thomas Gainsborough’s “The Blue Boy,” be sure to see it here alongside Kehinde Wiley’s “A Portrait of a Young Gentleman,” the institution’s newly commissioned work that re-conceives the famous painting. huntington.org

Tournament House and Wrigley Gardens It’s hard to miss the stately white Renaissance-style mansion perched along Pasadena’s grand Orange Grove Boulevard. The structure, presented to the City of Pasadena in 1958 by the Wrigley family, today serves as the permanent headquarters for the Tournament of Roses. It’s surrounded by Wrigley Gardens, a display of verdant plants and flowers including more than 1,500 varieties of roses, camellias, and annuals. tournamentofroses.com

center for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Operated and managed by Caltech, also houses the Space Flight Operations Facility, a control room which has monitored all interplanetary and deep space exploration for NASA and other international space agencies since 1963. JPL offers tours for visitors that include the chance to watch them work on an actual spacecraft, but plan ahead—you’ll need to schedule at least a month in advance. jpl.nasa.gov

5 6 8 10 The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens The Huntington is one of the city’s crown jewels, packed with so much to experience that you could easily spend the whole day there. The property’s 16 spectacular botanical gardens are spread over 130 scenic acres. Marvel at the otherworldly succulents in the desert garden, inhale the intoxicating scent wafting through the expansive rose garden, then weave your way through a lush bamboo forest on your way to the ornate Japanese garden. Don’t miss the Japanese Heritage Shōya House, a 3,000-square-foot residence built around 1700, where visitors can walk through a portion of the house to see how inhabitants lived their daily lives more

The Arroyo Seco The Arroyo Seco, or “the Arroyo,” is a stretch of land first inhabited by the Hahamog’na Tribe of Tongva Native Americans. It contains a stream that runs all the way from the San Gabriel Mountains down to the Pacific Ocean, creating a lush ecosystem in its wake. Here, you’ll find the world’s first disc golf course, an archery range, a casting pond, and a lovely garden dedicated to native plants. Hike or bike any stretch of the 22 miles of trails that connect the Angeles National Forest with South Pasadena to take in the native landscape and incredible views.

Colorado Street Bridge The iconic Colorado Street Bridge was opened to the public in 1913. Made from concrete, this curved structure spans almost 1,500 feet, and towers 150 feet above ground in some areas. You can see the bridge’s Beaux Arts arches, light standards, and railings in several Hollywood productions, including 2016’s acclaimed film “La La Land.” Pro tip: During California’s poppy season, you can snap a great photo of the orange blooms from nearby Desiderio Park with the bridge as the backdrop.

USC Pacific Asia Museum This one-of-akind museum was constructed in 1924 by Pasadena architectural firm Marston, Van Pelt, and Maybury at the behest of anthropologist Grace Nicholson, who guided the project with her illustrations and ideas. The design carefully followed the Imperial Palace Courtyard style found in many of Beijing, China’s notable buildings, and won national praise for its stunning beauty. Now dubbed the USC Pacific Asia Museum, it’s one of the most stunning examples of Chinese architecture. Don’t miss the courtyard, where you can find many elements of the classic gardens of China. pacificasiamuseum.usc. edu

Outdoor sports and recreation are a huge part of Pasadena living. How could they not be? We’re surrounded by incredible places to explore. Just a short drive from the 700,000-acre Angeles National Forest and the pristine San Gabriel Mountains, Pasadena is the perfect home base to experience all that Southern California has to offer. Whether you’re an urban wildlife enthusiast, avid hiker, or yoga master, it’s likely you’ll find something enjoy. Here, wellness is a lifestyle! Try your hand at archery or birdwatching in the lush Arroyo Seco, cycle or jog around the iconic Rose Bowl Recreation Loop, or follow in the footsteps of John Muir and tackle a challenging hike in the surrounding mountains. Whatever your passion, there’s an activity for you.

Where Did Pasadena’s Parrots Come From? Every morning at dawn and dusk, the squawking of Pasadena’s flock of vibrant green parrots can be heard. But how did they get here from their native eastern Mexico? Urban legend suggests they escaped from a pet store fire 50 years ago, but most wildlife experts theorize that the parrots are descended from those who were poached for the pet trade in the 1970s and ’80s. Their new owners were often overwhelmed by the amount of care the birds need to survive, and many were released into the wild.

Whether you’re traveling with a feisty Teacup Chihuahua or a mellow Great Dane, you’ll find that Pasadena welcomes pets with open arms. There are many petfriendly lodging options, and some really go the extra mile to make sure your pup is pampered. The Langham Huntington will provide a plush pink doggy bed, while Pasadena Hotel & Pool offers furry guests an adorable “pup” tent. Once you’re settled, if your dog is being especially good, head over to Dog Bakery to score homemade treats. There are plenty of dog parks for playtime, or hit the area hiking trails. Afterward, dine al fresco at local pet-friendly restaurants. Some favorites include Agnes Restaurant & Cheesery, Craft, Little Flower, True Food, Burlington Arcade, and Luggage Room.

At the Rose Bowl Recreational Loop, you can run, bike, skate with your dog for 3 miles on a paved trail, or take the unpaved path and hike around the lower Arroyo Seco’s 22 miles of trails and recreational fun for a more natural detour. No matter which route you choose, you’re sure to encounter lots of friendly local residents and their furry companions along the way. (No matter the weather, remember to bring water and check the pavement temperature before heading out.)

GETTING AROUND

BY RAIL

Amtrak Amtrak’s Pacific Coast Surfliner and Coast Starlight trains make regular stops to Glendale and downtown L.A.’s Union Station, which are both about 11 miles (18 km) from Pasadena. Hop onto the Metro A Line light rail, and be in Pasadena in under 30 minutes. (800) 872-7245 amtrak.com

FROM THE AIRPORT

Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) Hollywood Burbank Airport is a nice life hack for travelers flying in from the West Coast, the Southwest, New York City, Chicago, or Houston and want to avoid heavy traffic. The smaller airport is 15 miles (24 km) from Pasadena and a major hub for Southwest, Alaska, Delta, United, American, and JetBlue airlines. Taxis and rideshares are readily available upon arrival. The most efficient way to get to Pasadena via

public transit is to take the Metrolink to Union Station and then A Line to Pasadena (Del Mar Station). (818) 840-8840 hollywood burbankairport.com

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Coming from LAX, a 29-mile (47-km) cab ride to Pasadena costs about $80, which is a suitable solution for those splitting the fare or for business travelers that can expense their trip. An organized rideshare location at LAX is reachable through dedicated shuttles.

Luxury charter buses pick up passengers along the airport’s loop before heading to downtown L.A., as does the more economical LAX FlyAway® bus ($9.75 each way). From Union Station, connect to the Metro A Line or use a rideshare app to get to Pasadena. (855) 463-5252 flylax.com
