“Every step of the way, I persisted and achieved my best,” Dr. Recasens said. “I became Board Certified in Ophthalmology and every ten years, I renewed by board. I can tell you that all of this made me stronger and I truly learned from all the obstacles on the road to my successes.”

“Mama, what’s a ‘power-woman’?” asked my 5-year-old daughter, Olivia. She’d overheard me and my husband discussing whether to move forward with this magazine profile oppotunity.

“Well, sweetie, I’m not really sure myself. Let me think about that a bit.”

And think I did. Here’s what I came up with…

A power-woman is a lady who works hard, battles adversity, and develops the skill set needed to empower others. Any power she has comes from the trust she’s earned, the positive impact she’s made, and the goodwill she’s engendered. A single mom working multiple jobs to support her kids is a power-woman for her family. A dedicated nurse or doctor in the NICU is a power-woman for her patients. And, sure, a passionate real estate agent can be a power-woman for her clients.

So, I went back to my daughter and said, “Livy, a powerwoman is a strong lady who pushes to be her best so she can help people have better lives.” My husband chimed in, “One day you’ll be a power-woman, just like Mama.” Olivia grinned, and so did I.

I’m proud to be considered a Pasadena PowerWoman, despite never having expected to receive such an honor. I immigrated to the U.S. from China at 13 to reunite with my parents. They’d come a few years prior in search of a better life. Money was tight, I couldn’t speak English yet, and my grades in high school were poor. Thankfully, I was able to play catch up in junior college and I worked 3 jobs to pay my way through USC’s business program. Today, I have been recognized as the top agent for $2M+ homes sold in Pasadena during 2023 and for overall Pasadena home sales volume in the same year.

Occasionally, somebody will ask me, “What’s your secret?” My answer usually surprises them. Growing up, people thought I wasn’t capable of much, so when a client places their trust in me, I hold that sacred and will move mountains to exceed their expectations. It’s more than just business.
