The mecca of midcentury modern is one of Southern California’s sunniest destinations, and an eternal microcosm of cool.

TO PARAPHRASE AUDREY HEPBURN’S IMMORTAL WORDS IN THE FILM SABRINA, “PALM SPRINGS IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA.”

The starchitects of the day – who included Richard Neutra, William Krisel, William F. Cody, Albert Frey, and Hugh M. Kaptur – designed fanciful homes whose legacies live on, including the Kaufmann Desert House (Neutra) and Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway (Krisel).

The sprawling 1964 Dinah Shore Estate, a modernist masterpiece designed by Donald Wexler, is now owned by actor Leonardo DiCaprio. LA-based celebrity interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard weekends in Palm Springs at Villa Grigio, his “swinging sixties” pad built in 1962 by Hollywood set designer James McNaughton. The chic digs were once home to Hugh Hefner and assorted Playmates.

In season, Palm Springs maintains an especially active social calendar, starting in January with the esteemed Palm Springs International Film Festival, which will hold its 35th festival of screenings and star-studded premieres January 4 - 15, 2024 (WZÄSTMLZ[ VYN).

A unique blend of hipster It City and blissedout nature reserve, Palm Springs is, truly, Dreamtown. It’s got Rat Pack cred, swanky retro hotels, sweeping desertscapes and heirloom fruit trees, and mid-century houses so cool you’ll be running to Zillow. Plus a cinematic backdrop of the San Bernardino, San Jacinto, HUK :HU[H 9VZH 4V\U[HPUZ MVY LU]PHISL ZLSÄLZ (Did we mention Perfect Hair Weather?)

Fashion designer Trina Turk, a familiar face in Palm Springs, owns a 1936 Streamline Moderne home designed by Erle Webster and Adrian Wilson dubbed the “Ship of the Desert,” because of its ocean liner-shaped facade. Couturier Jeremy Scott snagged the iconic 1968 Elrod House – the umbrella-domed villa ZLLU PU [OL 1HTLZ )VUK ÄST Diamonds Are Forever – designed by John Lautner for interior designer Arthur Elrod.

Designated a Preserve America City in 2009 by the National Trust of Historic Preservation, Palm Springs has the largest concentration of preserved mid-century architecture in the United States. Averaging 350 sunny days a year, Palm Springs is home to 125 golf courses, 140 hiking trails, and the majestic Joshua Tree National Park. Like your first kiss, Palm Springs will never let you forget her. A breezy two-hour drive from Los Angeles, Palm Springs gained popularity as a weekend destination among Hollywood’s elite thanks to the “Two-Hour Rule” of the 1930s to 1950s, when studio contracts stipulated that actors had to be within two hours of the studios, at all times during production. Enticed by the desert’s exotic charms, as well as the ability to cavort discreetly if desired, Hollywood stars quickly took note. While Greater Palm Springs encompasses nine cities, it’s Palm Springs proper that gets most of the credit. The epicenter of the action, it’s where Elvis and Priscilla Presley got married, Marilyn Monroe was discovered, and Frank Sinatra commissioned architect E. Stewart Williams to build “Twin Palms” – famous for its pianoshaped pool. 1 14 L A M AG . C O M

Publishing tycoon Walter Annenberg and his wife Leonore chose Rancho Mirage, 10 miles southeast of Palm Springs, for Sunnylands, their 200-acre winter estate built by A. Quincy Jones. Nicknamed “Playground of the Presidents,” the 29-square-mile city is also home to the historic Tamarisk Country Club – where resident Zeppo Marx was rumored to play late-night golf in the I\ќ 70-240 Frank Sinatra Dr., tamaraskcc.com). Life in nearby Palm Desert is centered around its glamorous main drag, El Paseo, aka the Rodeo Drive of the Desert, a mile-long stretch of upscale shops, restaurants, antique stores, and ÄUL HY[ NHSSLYPLZ 3H 8\PU[H IVHZ[Z H WYLZ[PNPV\Z PGA West with a Pete Dye-designed stadium JV\YZL ¶ HZ ^LSS HZ OPNO WYVÄSL ULPNOIVYZ who include Cindy Crawford as well as three members of the Jenner-Kardashian clan. Indian Wells is home to the world-famous BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament, which returns March 4 - 17, 2024 (bnpparibasopen.com). Indio, the largest city in Greater Palm Springs, is where both the legendary Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (April 12-21, 2024, coachella.com), as well as its newer country cousin, the Stagecoach Festival (April 26-28, 2024, stagecoachfestival.com) are held each April. Coachella, the city, is a blossoming cannatourism center – you can even book a threehour, “root to toot,” Cannabis Tour at CannaBus Express Tours (cannabusexpresstours.com). Cathedral City has a thriving arts scene, including the Perez Road Art & Design District where actress Kate Hudson was spotted shopping; a digital public art tour is available at cathedralcitypublicarts.org. The many spas of Desert Hot Springs are super-powered by the city’s famed geothermal mineral water, which is naturally occurring and some of purest water in the world (Note to self: Pack empty gallon thermos in spa bag). Joshua Tree – the trippy “High Desert” – is an eclectic wonderland of nature, art, and vortex energy. A 50-minute drive from Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park is reason alone to upgrade

Modernism Week, a supersized celebration of mid-century modern architecture and design, returns February 15 - 24, 2024 with more than 350 events, including home and neighborhood tours, lectures, vintage shopping, and festive theme parties where you can wear all your madcap vintage clothing (and get a million compliments). The 11-day festival, approaching its 19th year, attracts more than 100,000 mid-century enthusiasts annually from around the world (modernismweek.com). Making the trek just got easier, thanks to Alaska Air’s new direct ÅPNO[Z MYVT 5L^ @VYR»Z 1-2 [V 7HST :WYPUNZ International Airport, starting this month. “Mini Modernism Week,” a less intensive festival with approximately 50 events, is held every October. Desert modernist architecture tours are available year-round at Mod Squad Architecture & Design Tours (psmodsquad.com). March brings the annual Fashion Week El Paseo, where more than 200 designers have held runway shows, including Ralph Rucci, Carolina Herrera, Roberto Cavalli, Etro, Monique Lhuillier, Alice + Olivia, and Palm Springs resident Trina Turk. The 17th annual edition will be held March 15 - 21, 2024, with seven days of ticketed fashion events (73-545 El Paseo, Palm Desert, fashionweekelpaseo.com).

“They loved the architecture but wanted the home to have more of a Palm Springs feel,” says Grace co-founder Roger Stoker. “We went through the house and replaced the gray and black with aqua, spring green, and yellow, very bright but livable.” Highlights of the newly energized, sundrenched home include a Murano glass chandelier, agate wallpaper, contrasting herringbone (and hexagon) cowhide rugs, and a puckish family portrait.
