SIDE GIG Nicholas C. Davis’ artistry isn’t limited to his work as a cosmetic and reconstructive dentist in Newport Beach. He is also an award-winning photographer. by Anastacia Grenda How long have you been a photographer?

I’ve always loved art and photography. In college, I took photography courses to understand the intricacies of the art. We also learned to develop film and made our own prints.

What are the correlations between photography and dentistry?

One of the classes I took was photojournalism layouts.

This taught me to see how the photos and text needed to be structured on the page to draw the reader into the article. Seeing how all the parts worked together gave me a greater understanding of composition and also a keener view of how individual teeth play together to create a beautiful smile. In creating a smile design for patients, you must see the whole, the parts, and the details, in that specific sequence, which is the same in photography. You need an artistic, analytical eye that can see the small things, which can make a big difference.

What are your favorite subjects?

I love capturing images of people, landscapes, and the unusual, like my photo of Portofino buildings as seen in the reflection on the water. One of my favorite locations to shoot is Europe because it is so rich in history.

1. Get an in-office treatment.

“It takes approximately one hour and consists of four 15-minute sessions with a high-concentrate whitening gel. Some in-office treatments also use an LED light to activate the gel, and patients can see their teeth get four to five shades lighter in one sitting.”

2. Perform at-home maintenance.

“Over-the-counter white strips work well but lack the precise fit of a customized tray. With these trays you can use a variety of whitening gels based on your sensitivity levels. At-home treatments on their own take longer than an in-office treatment to attain the desired results, but they do work if you wear the trays consistently as directed.”

3. Take care of your teeth daily.

“Stains happen, but it helps if you do your best to avoid dark liquids such as red wine, coffee, or tea; if you do drink them, it’s best to use a straw. Plaque also can accumulate stains, so brush twice a day and floss daily. Finally, you have to be careful not to use whitening toothpaste every day because it is abrasive on the teeth and makes them more sensitive. I recommend using it no more than two to three times per week.”
