For our inaugural Best of L.A. Legal, we brought the selection process in-house under the guidance of a former publisher of Super Lawyers. To ensure a thoughtful and well-rounded approach, we partnered with a thirdparty data team to survey attorneys, reviewed other reputable rankings and applied our own editorial perspective to inform the final selections.
Most importantly, we spoke directly with members of the local legal community. We asked attorneys whom they trust with referrals and sought recommendations from individuals in our network who have hired legal counsel. While some honorees appear on multiple recognized lists, it was equally important to highlight attorneys who, through our research, are doing meaningful work and are accessible to meet the legal needs of our readers.
This list is not exhaustive and does not include all honorees. Those featured primarily represent consumer-focused practice areas. The complete list will be available online, and both the print and digital editions will be accessible at lamag.com and distributed through our newsletters.
Selecting an attorney is a personal decision. It is important to work with a lawyer or firm that not only has the experience to handle your matter, but also earns your trust. This list is intended to serve as a starting point, featuring both established attorneys and emerging leaders in the legal community.
This is just the beginning for Best of L.A. Legal. You will see expanded legal coverage in future issues, and we welcome your feedback.
ese 25 Women Attorneys of Note were chosen based on their legal work and reputation in the L.A. Legal community.

In employment law, results matter. But for clients navigating some of the most di cult moments of their lives, how those results are achieved, matters ust as much. At JLG, the di erence begins with perspective. Built by two founders whose paths rarely intersect in traditional law firms, JLG is designed from the ground up to serve people, not just cases.
Michael Jaurigue, a United States Marine Corps veteran and graduate of the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, spent years representing ortune 100 companies at a leading defense firm. e understands how employers assess risk, when they choose to fight and what ultimately drives them to resolve a case. Over the course of his career, he has negotiated more than $800 million in settlements and has been recognized as a ising Star and Super Lawyer from
2019 through 2026. For clients, that experience provides a strategic advantage and insight typically reserved for the other side.
Ale andra Tieu brings a complementary perspective shaped by her background in real estate and technology. She built and sold companies, including eller Williams and ovoto, and was recognized by The ecorder and Law.com as an innovator in technology and artificial intelligence. er e perience on the orbes eal state Council, as a contributor to the arvard Business forum, and as co-founder of 25V, a venture capital fund focused on minority founders, has shaped how JLG operates at its core. For clients, that means faster communication, greater transparency and a firm that operates with the e ciency of a modern business rather than the delays often associated with traditional legal practices.

Together, that combination of legal strategy and operational innovation is focused on one goal: achieving stronger outcomes for the people JLG represents.
The firm focuses e clusively on representing employees in matters involving wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, retaliation and wage and hour violations. What distinguishes JLG is not only the cases it handles, but the way those cases are built. Rather than relying on uick valuations, the firm invests in developing each matter thoroughly, gathering evidence, documenting emotional and professional impact and positioning claims for ma imum strength. or clients, that means their e periences are fully understood and supported from the outset.
Client relationships remain central to the firm s philosophy. Legal disputes are rarely just legal. They are personal, stressful and often isolating. JLG emphasizes clear communication, thoughtful guidance and a commitment to seeing cases through, whether toward settlement or trial. That approach has helped build trust with clients and credibility throughout the legal community.

The same philosophy e tends internally. JLG has built a culture that values professional e cellence alongside personal well being. ts paralegal apprenticeship program, which allows team members to prepare for the California Bar while working full time, re ects the firm s broader commitment to opportunity, mentorship and investing in people. n a legal landscape that often prioritizes volume over connection, JLG o ers a di erent model a firm built on strategy, innovation and care.

Tell us about your legal practices and what di erentiates ou from other lawyers.
As partners at an international law firm, we have worked together for years on high stakes litigation for many of the world s best known companies. uch of our work focuses on defending employers in class actions involving alleged violations of wage and hour laws. We also represent companies in matters involving discrimination, harassment and other workplace regulations.
We pride ourselves on being relentless, results-driven advocates who consistently develop creative strategies to win. ur e perience spans from cases involving a single employee to those involving more than 5,000 employees or an entire workforce. We have successfully defended cases where potential e posure e ceeded 250 million. Clients often ask us to take over matters from other firms when they are seeking greater creativity and a more calculated, pressure-oriented approach that creates new advantages.
hich of our legal ictories stands out the most
We recently secured a landmark ruling for an international retailer in a decade long case involving claims under the California rivate Attorneys General Act. The employees were seeking appro imately 0 million in AGA penalties. These cases can involve multiple layers of penalties based on comple and technical regulations that apply to all employers. While courts have discretion to reduce the penalties, even significant reductions can still result in substantial liability. n a first of its kind decision, we successfully secured a complete obliteration of AGA penalties, resulting in no recovery on that claim involving thousands of employees.
ur victory will undercut future lawsuits seeking staggering penalties against employers that are wildly disproportionate to any harm su ered by workers. ultiple companies have already left California due to strangling employment regulations. We hope our win will help make California more hospitable to business, which will benefit employees by keeping obs here.

What stands out in the way you approach working with our clients hat di erentiates ou from others in law
I developed The Legal Care Method™ to define a clear philosophy that blends compassion with strategy. While many attorneys emphasize client care, few articulate a structured approach that re ects intentionality in both service and outcomes. This method guides how I evaluate cases, communicate with clients and pursue results.
ur client centered focus is built into how the firm operates. We prioritize individualized attention while still pursuing strong results, including a $2.5 million settlement recently. I believe empathy and performance are not mutually exclusive. Clients deserve both thoughtful support and e ective advocacy.

By writing about legal issues and educating consumers, I aim to provide clarity and empower individuals to better understand their rights. In addition, I am committed to mentoring future attorneys and contributing to the long term development of the profession.

@goharabelian
What stands out in the way you approach working with your clients? hat di erentiates ou from others in law?
Our motto is, “No case is just business. Every case is personal.” We stand by that belief. We develop a strategy tailored to each client, regardless of the size of the matter. Once you become part of Abkarian Law Group, we are fully committed to pursuing the most favorable outcome possible.
What do you want potential clients and legal referral sources to know about your practice?
We have been in business for 34 years and continue to receive most of our referrals from former clients. While we have been recognized as Super Lawyers for seven years and named a top law firm in 2025 and 2026, those honors matter less than the trust our clients place in us. A referral from a former client is the strongest measure of our work and re ects our commitment to practicing law the right way.
s there something ersonal that you would like to share with us? A hobb a cause or something that is your passion?
I came to this country 47 years ago as an immigrant without knowing the language. I believe that with hard work, anything is possible in the United States. That belief has guided my life and career.
One of the most meaningful moments in my practice came after representing a family in a wrongful death case. They gave me a small statue their father had made years earlier. ore than 30 years later, still keep it in my o ce as a reminder of why I do this work.

What honors or accomplishments have you received recognition for?
Recognized as 2025 Daily Journal California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year award recipients for work in Barrington Plaza Tenant Association v. Douglas Emmett Inc., in which the firm successfully invalidated eviction notices issued to tenants at the 712-unit Barrington Plaza apartment complex.
What do you want potential clients and legal referral sources to know about your practice?
We focus on complex housing law, including nuanced legal issues involving constitutional law and civil rights. We represent tenants exclusively and are fully prepared to take cases to trial when necessary.
Is there something personal that you would like to share with us?
We are committed to protecting tenants and preserving a ordable housing. nlike firms that prioritize uick settlements, we focus on long-term outcomes that serve our clients’ interests. We do not advise tenants to give up rent-stabilized housing for short-term gains. Our work re ects a broader commitment to maintaining stable, a ordable housing in our communities.

What honors or accomplishments have you received recognition for?
Over my career, I’ve had the privilege of working on cases that have shaped both individual lives and California law. I served on the trial team in a civil rights wrongful death and excessive force case that resulted in a $32 million jury verdict, and I was part of the team that secured an eight-figure settlement in a comple legal malpractice and corporate structuring dispute.
I also obtained a precedent-setting opinion from the Review Department of the California State Bar Court, a result I’m particularly proud of because it created lasting change in how attorneys are protected within the disciplinary process.
What stands out in the way you approach working with our clients hat di erentiates ou from others in law
I refuse to accept the surface story. Too many lawyers settle for the version of events handed to them by opposing counsel, institutions or the record as it appears on day one. My clients get an attorney who digs until the truth surfaces, no matter how unlikely the theory may seem at the outset.
Working under Mark Geragos for nearly a decade taught me that the theories that sound the most far-fetched at the beginning are often the ones that turn out to be true, but only if you have the discipline to investigate, push and refuse to back down out of fear of looking unconventional.
My clients don’t hire me to manage their case quietly. They hire me to hold the other side s feet to the fire.
What do you want potential clients and legal referral sources to know about your practice?
When I take a case, the other side knows it. I bring relentless preparation, an investigative mindset and a willingness to litigate aggressively when the facts demand it. Referring attorneys can trust that their clients will be treated with the seriousness their matters deserve and that I’ll communicate openly with referral sources throughout the process.
I take on cases where accountability matters. More often than not, someone in power has lost sight of the truth, and the only way to restore balance is through rigorous, un inching legal work.

What honors or accomplishments have you received recognition for?
The firm has secured significant trial and appellate victories in state and federal courts across the nation including the inth, ighth and Second Circuit courts, as well as the nited States Supreme Court. t has been recognized in the Chambers and artners Spotlight Guide as one of California s leading small to midsize intellectual property firms and by artindale ubbell as latinum level Client Champions. Super Lawyers has selected Stephen oniger and Scott Burroughs for the years 2021 to 2026, and designated as ising Stars Trevor Barrett 2020 to 2026 , elsey Schultz 202 to 2026 , and Ben amin Tookey 2025 to 2026 . Stephen oniger received the 2023 California Lawyers Association Law Section anguard Award for his contributions to Law, and magazine named Scott Burroughs a top music lawyer.
What stands out in the way you approach working with your clients hat di erentiates ou from others in law
oniger Burroughs is deeply specialized in copyright, trademark and right of publicity law, with industry specific e perience in creative fields such as music, fashion and media. The firm is also known for
its broader litigation practice and strong record of trial success, which distinguishes its approach to client representation.
We strive to bring the same creativity and integrity that we are passionate about protecting to every matter we handle. We o er a range of billing models beyond traditional hourly rates, including at fee, contingent fee and hybrid arrangements. We take on challenging cases, approach them with a fresh perspective, and often identify opportunities others may overlook.

What stands out in the way you approach working with your clients? What di erentiates ou from others in law
I approach every case as if it will ultimately be decided by a jury. That means building a clear, persuasive narrative from day one, not just at trial. I don’t separate legal strategy from storytelling. rom the first client meeting, am thinking about how the case will be understood, challenged and ultimately resolved.
I am also very intentional about when to be aggressive and when to be measured. Clients come to me when the stakes are high and the margin for error is small. They want someone who is not only prepared, but who knows how to move a case forward with purpose.
hat is the rimar focus of our legal practice? Do you have a niche or unique area of law ou want to highlight
My practice focuses on high-stakes litigation, with an emphasis on criminal defense and comple matters involving significant personal or financial e posure. regularly handle cases where the facts are layered, the scrutiny is intense and the consequences are lifechanging. Many of my cases also involve a public-facing component, where legal strategy and perception intersect.
I focus on breaking cases down to their core issues, identifying leverage early and building strategies that hold up under pressure.
What do you want potential clients and legal referral sources to know about our practice?
I am selective about the cases I take so I can remain fully hands-on in every matter. Early decisions shape outcomes, and I focus heavily on positioning cases from the outset, before mistakes are made or narratives take hold. Referral sources trust me with matters that require discretion, strategic thinking and a willingness to take a case further than expected.

What stands out in the way you approach working with our clients hat di erentiates ou from others in law?
What stands out in the way I work with clients is that I do not treat legal representation as purely transactional. My work often involves people who are facing the most frightening, destabilizing moments of their lives, whether in a criminal case, a federal investigation, crisis management, civil litigation, or a matter with reputational and personal consequences. They need someone who can help them think clearly when everything feels uncertain.
I take a very personal approach. At times, that means my role is almost therapeutic, helping clients calm down, process what is happening, understand the real risks, and make decisions from a place of clarity instead of panic.
At the same time, I am not someone who sugarcoats. When a client needs to hear the truth, I give it to them directly. I would rather prepare someone for reality than comfort them with false hope. I keep it real about the obstacles while still helping them see the path forward.
hat is the rimar focus of our legal ractice
The primary focus of my practice is high-stakes criminal defense, with an emphasis on federal whitecollar matters, investigations, and crisis management involving high-profile clients. y e perience includes financial crimes, fraud, money laundering, ta issues, tra cking, and international charges.
s there something ersonal ou would like to share with us?
Outside of my practice, my greatest role is being a mother to my two young children. I spend much of my time with them, and I love seeing the world through their eyes.
My family is a major source of inspiration. I look up to my husband, Sami, who has built a successful career as an entrepreneur and business leader. His drive and discipline inspire me both personally and professionally. My Afghan heritage, culture, and religion are also a central part of who I am and shape my worldview.

How do you make injury treatment more accessible in your communities?
Every accident victim should have access to the right treatment for their injuries.
In 2024, Maison Law partnered with Kaweah Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Visalia to create a comprehensive outdoor mobility training area in Central California. The Maison Law Mobility Training Course at Kaweah Health helps patients who have experienced serious physical trauma relearn how to walk safely across a variety of outdoor terrains.
ow do ou ad ocate for our clients financial reco er
We take a hands on approach to every case we handle. We believe clients should work directly with their attorneys so their cases receive the attention they deserve.
We take the time to understand the unique circumstances of each matter. By asking the right questions, we uncover the full impact of an injury on our clients’ lives.
We then build each case with the goal of achieving the best possible outcome, including taking a case to trial when necessary.

Is there something personal that you would like to share with us? A hobby, a cause or something that is your passion?
In California, about 6 percent of licensed attorneys are from the Latino community. That reality informs my commitment to advocate for my clients with purpose and consistency. I believe storytelling with integrity is central to legal advocacy and to how diverse experiences are understood within the law.
My perspective is shaped by my migration from El Salvador and my experience navigating di erent systems. stand beside clients during di cult moments so no one feels invisible, unheard or exploited. My background in women’s and gender studies informs an approach grounded in empathy, cultural awareness and clear advocacy.

What stands out in the way you approach working with your clients hat di erentiates ou from others in law
y first message to clients is that will always be honest with them. Family law is one of the most personal areas of law. When the future feels uncertain, clients need clear and honest guidance, not reassurance alone. I focus on developing strategies tailored to each client’s needs and work alongside them at every stage, providing support, clarity and direction throughout the process.
What do you want potential clients and legal referral sources to know about your practice?

The work that has meant the most to me is helping people stand up to companies far more powerful than they are. Over the years, that work has produced verdicts I never imagined — a $155.4 million verdict in Rudnicki v. Farmers Insurance, one of the largest retaliation verdicts in California history, and a $32.2 million verdict in Hugyetz v. Equinox, the largest non-EEOC disability discrimination verdict in California history. I'm ust as proud of the ne t generation of trial lawyers at our firm, including a 103 million verdict in Slagel v. Liberty Mutual the largest age discrimination verdict in U.S. history tried by my son, Justin Shegerian, and our team. Across our practice, more than $1 billion has been recovered for employees who refused to back down. I was named Trial Lawyer of the ear in 2013 and nominated eleven times. The honor value most, though, is the trust our clients place in us when they have the most to lose.
What stands out in the way you approach working with your clients? What di erentiates ou from others in law
We go to trial. While many firms focus on early settlement, prepare every case from the outset as if it will be decided by a jury. Representing clients against major corporations requires preparation and resolve, and I am committed to pursuing the full value of every case — but I have learned, over many years, that no verdict matters more than the person it's for. I treat our clients as individuals, not cases, and our team supports them at every stage. By the time they enter the courtroom, they are prepared and confident. The relationships we build e tend beyond a single case, and they continue to shape how I advocate for every client who comes through our doors.

What honors or accomplishments have you received recognition for? am blessed that have been honored to be selected three times as Attorney of the ear, nominated si times as Trial Lawyer of the ear and recognized twice as Street ighter of the ear. am grateful that have handled some of the most significant cases in California and the nited States, including matters that have been featured in films and books. otable cases handled include a civil rights action against the Los Angeles olice epartment for the family of The otorious B. .G. and defending the city in the orth ollywood shootout. y e perience representing and litigating against law enforcement provides specialized knowledge in civil rights and employment cases, helping clients achieve great results.
