Welcome to Lambton Local

Lambton Local is a new community newspaper covering news, views and events from around the Lambton and North Lambton areas. It will be handdelivered to 3,500 homes and businesses in the local area each month.

You’re most probably reading this now because you live or work around Lambton. The luckiest of us, myself included, get to live and work in Lambton.

My name is Mark and I’m the publisher, advertising sales person, trainee graphic designer, book keeper, copy boy and delivery guy for Lambton Local.

For the time being at least all those roles are mine. I hope to pass a couple of those jobs on to others before too long!

Lambton Local aims to publish

news and information on our local community, sporting events and neighbourhood groups as well as our local schools. A bit of history and humour might be thrown in for good measure.

We hope to not take ourselves too seriously. We will however be vocal and stand up for the best interests of the community of Lambton when required.

“Variety Bash is not a race or a rally and speed is not important. That’s lucky for us really. The old Mercedes-Benz wagon we are entering is no racing car!” according to Brett.

“What really matters is raising money for special needs children while exploring parts of New South Wales we wouldn’t otherwise see.”

“We’ve covered the entry fee for a Variety Bash vehicle. What we’d love to do now is raise a minimum $4000 for Variety The Children’s Charity.

All the funds we raise will go towards purchasing special needs equipment for the many children in the Newcastle region who may be sick, disabled or disadvantaged in some way. None of it goes towards the vehicle running or repair costs ” said Brett.

Bar 121 will be holding a raffle every Friday up to 16 May with all proceeds going to the fundraising effort. All meat tray prizes for these raffles have been very generously donated by Jarrett’s Quality

Fire Station throws doors open

Station Captain at Lambton Barry Griffin prepares for the Open Day Saturday 17 May

Fire & Rescue NSW is holding its annual Open Day on Saturday 17 May 2014 with fire stations across the State, including our local station at Lambton, opening their doors to give visitors a personal glimpse into Australia’s

busiest fire and rescue service.

Open Day coincides with the launch of FRNSW’s Winter Fire Safety Campaign.

According to Barry Griffin, Station Captain at Lambton Fire Station, “more than 80,000 people across NSW are expected to attend Open Day at their local station this year, with more fire stations than ever before taking part in this important annual community event.”

“The attractions for this year’s Open Day include safety demonstrations, fire station tours and the chance to inspect firefighting equipment and trucks used by our firefighters when responding to fires and other emergencies.

There will also be showbag

giveaways, a free sausage sizzle and an array of activities for the kids.” Said Captain Griffin.

“Visitors can speak first-hand to our local firefighters about fire safety in the home, including how to install and maintain smoke alarms and how to develop a home escape plan to ensure they can quickly and safely escape a fire.

“With winter fast approaching and research showing fire deaths peak in the winter months, Open Day is the perfect opportunity to visit Lambton Fire Station and learn first-hand how you can protect your family, home and contents and minimise the risk of a home fire.” Captain Griffin added. Newcastle Family History Society can assist with your research

The historic Mechanics’ Institute, in Elder Street is home to the Newcastle Family History Society and the MG Car Club Hunter Region.

The Newcastle Family History Society Inc. is a group of people dedicated to family history research.

Located at the historic Lambton Mechanics’ Institute at 68 Elder Street, Lambton, visitors are welcome to use the Library and its resources for a fee of $5.00.

The Library houses a great number of books, journals, maps, microfilm and microfiche records, CD’s, card indexes, cemetery transcripts, local and family histories. Library opening hours are Thursday 1.00 pm to 3.30 pm

and Saturday 10.00 am to 3.30 pm. Volunteers are on duty to assist with your research.

Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month from February to December. February to May and September to December meetings commence at 7.30 pm. The May meeting will be the AGM. Thomas Croudace 1838 - 1906

Thomas Croudace was probably the most prominent citizen of Lambton. He has rightly been referred to as the ‘father of Lambton’ as he was responsible not only for the choice of township site, the original layout of streets, some brick miners’ cottages, the establishment of a National School and the foundation of the Mechanics’ and Miners’ Institute but also for its very successful ‘model’ colliery. In fact his influence was felt in every area of life in the township of Lambton. He was a brilliant engineer, an astute businessman, an able administrator and a just arbitrator as well as being a man of vision and great knowledge, experience and courage. However he could be shrewd, aggressive or outspoken at times, but overall, he was found to be fair, canny and benevolent. It is truly fitting that one of the suburb’s major roads bears his family name.

Society of Artists Newcastle Society of Artists Newcastle Inc. exists to help members enjoy their art.

Membership of the Society is currently over 300, with members coming from across Newcastle and the lower Hunter.

The Society’s clubhouse is located in Lambton Park, approximately opposite 37 Howe Street.

Most days of every week we have members in the rooms painting,

socialising and browsing the Society’s library of books and magazines. Those interested in portrait and contemporary drawing gather on Mondays to paint together, on Tuesdays there’s a social group working mainly in oils, on Wednesdays there are pastel classes, whilst on Fridays the outdoor painting group roams delightful city and rural locations.

We also regularly host

experienced tutors in all mediums for one or two day weekend workshops. Participation in these events, attract workshop fees to cover the costs associated with bringing the tutors to us.

Regular meetings of the Society are held on the last Monday of the month from 7.30 pm to around 9.00pm. Guest presenters often provide demonstrations or informative talks at our monthly meetings.

Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre The Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre (MNC), at 3 Illalung Rd (corner of Durham Rd) Lambton, is a not for profit Government funded Neighbourhood Centre catering for the needs of people of all ages from non-English speaking backgrounds.

We provide a meeting point for people to celebrate multiculturalism by learning and sharing together.

Our main goal is to assist migrants and refugees of all ethnic backgrounds integrate to the local Australian community.

The MNC promotes the education and support of children, young people, individuals and families from non-English speaking backgrounds in reaching their full potential within the local community. One of the programs we offer is the conversational English class. This class is free for anyone who wants to practice their English regardless of their residency status or visa type. Participants learn about Australia, our culture and our language. They make new friends and have fun while learning English in a friendly atmosphere. Classes are held Tuesdays during school terms from10.00 am to 2.30 pm.
