Vote, vote again, then vote once more Thousands of voters in Lambton and surrounding areas will go to the polls three times in less than 7 months, due to damning evidence of prohibited donations from a number of our state and local political representatives at the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) recently. Jeff McCloy resigned as Lord Mayor of Newcastle, whilst Tim Owen and Andrew Cornwell vacated their seats as the Members for Newcastle and Charlestown respectively after their time in the ICAC witness box. The State Government has announced that the seats of Charlestown and Newcastle will be contested at byelections on Saturday 25th October. This will only impact those residents of Lambton who live in Newcastle rather than Wallsend electorate. All registered voters in the area will then be called out for the
mayoral byelection. The Local Government act requires that it is held within three months of the Mr McCloy’s resignation, or Saturday 15th November at the latest. A date for this had not been fixed before Lambton Local went to press. A number of Newcastle councillors and State Labour figures have called for the mayoral poll to be held in conjunction with the state byelection in order to save costs, maximise turnout, and minimise voter aggravation.
Following these unexpected polls we are called upon to exercise our democratic right once more at a full state election scheduled for Saturday 28th March 2015. Lambton Local will bring you impartial coverage of the candidates for each of these elections as they approach, but more importantly provide guidance as to where the best cakes stalls and sausage sizzles are to be found on polling day!

students impress at Lizotte’s Lambton High School’s faculty of Creative and Performing Arts presented an eclectic mix of music from the here and now to a packed house at Lizotte’s last month. As the school is fast becoming the first choice for Contemporary Music study the annual Lizotte’s showcase is a fantastic opportunity for family, friends and fellow students to see musicians from Years 9 to 12 perform a wide variety of music live while enjoying a night of beautiful food. “Without a doubt, the evening at Lizotte’s is the highlight of the Lambton High School Music Faculty calendar for 2014” said Mr Dan Wilson, Head Teacher, Creative and Performing Arts. Throughout their courses
Lambton High music students are encouraged to explore modern technologies whilst maintaining a strong foundation in traditional music training. There is a heavy performance program at the school with lunchtime concerts each week in the Quad, musical performances at all major school events against a concert program that features the work of the students through the year. “Some of the best performances of the year are saved for the Lizotte’s show. Which isn’t surprising when you consider that students have the opportunity to perform in a venue such as Lizotte’s, with awesome sound and a fantastic atmosphere. ‘1000K’s 4 Kids’ rolling into Lambton
The Mark Hotel Lambton is the official finish point of the 2014 Glencore 1000 K’s 4 Kids on Sunday 14th September. The 1,000 K’s 4 Kids is a fantastic bike ride adventure raising much-needed funds for the inspirational kids of Camp Quality and their families. Last year the ride started in Ipswich and finished in Newcastle, with 35 riders and 17 support crew raising over $300,000. In 2014 the ride will start in Mittagong in the Southern Highlands on Friday 5th September, with overnight stops in Tarago, Canberra, Harden, Cowra, Orange, Bathurst, Mudgee, Merriwa, Singleton before finishing in Lambton with over 1,000 kms completed. This year the team plans to raise $350,000 with 35 riders and a support crew of 20 taking part. The funds raised will allow Camp Quality to continue to create a better life for every child living with cancer in Australia.
40 cyclists and 20 support crew will pull up at The Mark Hotel on Sunday 14th September at the end of their 10-day 1000km fundraising ride.

Please pick up pup’s poo Something for everyone at Congratulations on a great community newspaper, which I look forward to each month. It is so good to be informed of all sorts of news, stories and events and learn about the area in which we live. While this may not be such a nice issue to raise I am aware it is one of concern for a number of residents. Could everyone with a dog be encouraged to pick up their dog’s or dogs’ poos? As I am often up before daylight I have had to hose down several foul soles thanks to the droppings left on the grassed footpath at the front of my place and
then pick up the remains so others do not suffer the same fate. Owning a dog myself I do not think it is a big deal to carry some plastic bags on walks and dispose of the mess with consideration to others. Some years ago Lambton Park had a supply of dog bags for this purpose. Perhaps they could be set up once again unless the removal was due to vandalism. Thanks for allowing my vent. Thank you for your creation of the Lambton Local, sharing news, information and human-interest stories. I have to admit, I don’t usually read commercial newspapers, but I read this from front to back! A spin-off, directly from reading it, when I found a story about a man who spent time as a child in Lambton Park, I started thinking about my own father, and the stories he shared with us, about a whole lifetime of living here. Hence I rang the Editor to see if putting some thoughts in writing was a good idea. Your encouragement was great, and now I am writing and thinking about my own creativity. When I went to email the article, you guessed it. I couldn’t attach it! So frustrating Windows 8! So now I have booked into a computer course, to learn how to do this! Then I can email more of my poems and short stories. I bet I will meet some really nice people at this course, and have a good time to boot! I may even return to Toastmasters! I plan to talk to my sister, as she writes amazing poetry! Wow, all of these benefits, from reading this newspaper. My love of writing has been ignited again, and it’s so much fun, just being creative. Congratulations Mark, for having the courage to create a community newspaper for Lambton. The Exchange Hotel, first licensed 1881
..and now to another of the many, many licensed premises Lambton has seen over the years. There’s little doubt the residents of Lambton were a thirsty lot! The Exchange Hotel was situated on the corner of Howe and Morehead Streets. When this photo taken by Ralph Snowball c. 1888, Eli Chadwick was the publican, perhaps he is the gentleman in the foreground in the white shirt and mutton chop whiskers. The Hotel was known to contain a bar, 15 bedrooms, a billiard room and commercial rooms. The hotel was to see quite a few changes over the years, not only in its appearance, but also its name. At some time after 1921 the establishment here became known as the Lambton Park Hotel, the name it retains today. A number of readers contacted Lambton Local after we published the Pine Apple Inn story in our last edition. And it seems the story is by no means certain. The photo at left was provided by a reader by the name of Catherine who is the present owner of the premises in question. The reverse of the photo says it is the Reservoir Hotel. “The Story of Lambton” by Newcastle Family History Society Inc. has a list of licensees for the Pine Apple Inn from 1874-1880 and for the Reservoir Hotel from 1888 - 1921 so it is possible that the premises has had both names in its time. A couple of long-term residents have confirmed that Cobb and Co. Coaches did stop here. The horses were stabled at the corner of Dickson and Grainger Streets overnight before the return trip to Sydney. Elaine Mascord sent us some newspaper extracts mentioning the Pine Apple Inn including this interesting one below: Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners’ Advocate of, Monday 27 May 1878: LAMBTON INQUEST.On Saturday morning, at Mr.Dawson’s Pine Apple Hotel, North Lambton, the District Coroner and a jury of twelve, of whom Mr. Enos Parsons was chosen foreman, held an inquest on the body of Sarah Matilda Broadhead, who was found dead on the previous morning, suspended between the bed and the wall, at her parents residence. The evidence adduced proved beyond doubt that death had been caused accidentally, and the jury returned a verdict accordingly.

After eleven long seasons out of the competition, Lambton’s own Rugby League side, the Kingfishers are off the ground again. More than that, they are flying high! And that’s due in no small part to the offfield efforts of Club Secretary Paul ‘Stumpy’ Taylor. Formed in 1966, the Lambton-Jesmond Kingfishers, as they were originally known, were a formidable force in the local A-Grade competition for many years. Long time locals will remember the Kingfishers playing at Lambton Park when their change rooms were actually under the Rotunda. Because there was no fencing around the field, and therefore charging admission wasn’t possible, club stalwarts like Ron Cosgrove would move amongst the crowd banging his bucket kindly requesting ‘a couple of bob’ each from spectators. As the years past, and as is common with local sports groups, it became harder and harder for the club to remain viable on and off field, so the club folded following the 2002 season.

Last year Stumpy decided to get the club back on its feet. With the support of a small band including Club President Robbie Taylor, they approached the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League, the parent club Wests and potential sponsors. They then appointed Steve Slee as Captain/coach for the 2014 season and built a team from the ground up. “Without the support of our major sponsor The Mark Hotel, our parent club Wests Group and others, the Kingfishers would still be history. It’s a credit to local business when they recognise the benefits of local sport sponsorship.” Stumpy said If you asked Stumpy whether he had high expectations of on-field success this season he’d probably deny it. But the look in his eyes says he knew all along that something special might happen with the Kingfishers. After finishing the home and away season with 9 wins and 9 losses in the C-Grade competition, the Kingfishers made the finals. As this edition went to press they had gone on to defeat Stroud and progress to the second week of finals where they will meet Thornton-Beresfield. As we know anything can happen in finals football, so stay tuned. Whatever the ultimate result of this season is, Stumpy and those around him can be rightly proud of getting the Kingfishers back on the park in 2014.

Goal-setting By Anne-Marie Adams, owner/personal trainer at Inspirational Group & Fitness Training
Achieving goals is important not only for your health and fitness journey but also for anything you want to achieve in your life. Over the next couple of months I will be giving you the step by step guide on how to set yourself up to achieve what you want to achieve. This month we start with the first step towards your goal, setting your goal. It sounds simple I know, but a lot of us don’t know how to set a goal properly. This sets us up to fail from the outset. The best way is to set a S.M.A.R.T goal. This means making sure your goal is: Specific - so you know exactly what you want to achieve. Measurable – otherwise how do you know when you have achieved the goal? Attainable – the goal must be a challenge but also attainable in the time frame you have set. Relevant – You must want to achieve the goal for YOU, not for someone else. Time bound - otherwise you will not have that motivation or drive to achieve the goal. So an example of a non-SMART goal might be “I want to lose weight”. Using the SMART principle the goal would become “I want to lose 5kg in 12 weeks”. This is a clearly defined goal and there is now no confusion as to what you want to achieve and by when. Next month we will talk about ‘Finding your WHY’ but until then ‘love life, dream big and become the inspiration’.

Paralysis Tick season is here!
Although Ticks can attack our pets all year round, we find a significant increase in tick paralysis cases in early spring and into autumn. So here is a reminder on what you need to know. The Paralysis Ticks are found in bushy coastal areas of the eastern seaboard of Australia from Northern Queensland to Eastern Victoria. Veterinary advice should be sought and any ticks removed presented along with your pet for identification. Ticks can be removed by your vet or by yourself, using tweezers at the level of the skin by grasping the head and mouthparts, whilst taking care not to twist or squeeze the body. Symptoms take on average 5-7 days to develop after attachment, and are progressive and potentially lethal. Even after the tick is removed, they usually continue to deteriorate for 48 hours. Any symptoms consistent with tick paralysis - treatment is critical. Paralysis ticks secrete a toxin in their saliva which has effects on nerve, heart and lung function in your pets. The first sign is a staggering gait due to hind limb weakness. As the paralysis moves forward in the body it may cause signs such as inability to vocalize normally, regurgitation or vomiting, coughing and gagging, grunting on expiration, difficulty breathing, dilated pupils and rapid breathing. Prevention is the best cure and there are simple steps you can take to protect your pet from tick toxicity. Products such as spot-on treatments, baths, rinses and collars are available and can be useful in preventing tick attachment but thorough daily searching remains vital as no product absolutely prevents ticks from attaching and causing paralysis. Tick searches are made easier if your pets coat is clipped short, especially during the tick season.
