Step forward or group winds up says Lambton B.I.G. executive Lambton Business Improvement Group Inc, the body that represents small business owners and operators in the local area, risks being wound up unless new volunteers willing take on executive roles come forward by early October. Members of the 2013/14 executive group, including president Bede Jarrett of Jarrett’s Quality Meats, vice president Brett McGovern of Bar 121 have made known their intention not to accept or seek reelection at the end of the current term, if there is another term. Lambton Local understands that a brief email sent to members in mid-September proposed a meeting be held in October to vote on the winding up of the group. The reason given in the email for the urgency of the meeting was that ongoing fixed costs payable in

November could take what funds If it falls to one or two people as has been the case in years past the group has in reserve. Into the swim of things

The new operators of the Lambton Swimming Centre have wasted no time getting a program of improvements both in and out of the water underway. Lane 4 Aquatics, a private company hailing from Queensland, took over operation and management of four Newcastle City Council swimming pools including the Lambton centre in late September. New facilities at Lambton will include a cafe currently under construction around the entrance area where, for example. swimmers can order their coffee

Daniel and Emma Mulvey of Lane 4 Aquatics at Lambton Swimming Centre

and breakfast to be ready after their swim then eat-in or takeaway. The existing kiosk will undergo a full refurbishment also. In the water, Lane 4 will offer a comprehensive program of learn to swim and aqua fit classes. For the whole family there will be monthly Dive-In movies in coming months where you can watch movies on

the giant 5 metre screen from the comfort of the pool. A Halloween Pool Party is planned for Friday 31st October. “The best thing of all for season 2014/15 is that admission charges have been set at last year’s fees.” said CEO of Lane 4 Aquatics Daniel Mulvey.

Large field to contest State seat

Around one-third of Lambton residents will be required to vote in the by-election for the state parliamentary seat of Newcastle on Saturday 25th October. The by-election was of course triggered by the resignation last month of Tim Owen following evidence he gave at the Independent Commission Against Corruption. Broadly speaking, if you live on the high side or east of Lambton Park but south of Newcastle Road you reside in Newcastle electorate. If not you are an elector of Wallsend electorate and are not required ro vote on this occasion. If you are unsure you can go to http://streetlist.elections.nsw.gov.au/ to confirm which electorate you reside in.

Above: Tim Krakanthorp wasted no time, getting his campaigning underway for his tilt at the seat of Newcastle, seen here speaking with a Lambton resident in early September.

Official nominations for candidates will not open until early October. Nevertheless a large field of candidates have declared their intention to run. Those that have shown their hands to date are Michael Osborne (Greens), Tim Krakanthorp (Labor), Tony Brown (Independent), Karen Howard (Independent), Jennifer Stefanac (Independent), Milton Caine (Christian Democrats) and Brian Clare (Independent). The NSW Liberal Party has announced that it will not be contesting the byelection but instead it will wait until the full State election in early 2015.

Local butcher hopes to snag smallgoods royalty What many locals had suspected all along is now official. Lambton has the best butcher’s sausages in the Newcastle area are perhaps even further afield! Jarrett’s Quality Meats at Elder Street Lambton recently received 1st place in the Newcastle region finals of the National Sausage King Awards. Not only this, but it was in the hotly contested category of ‘Traditional Australian sausage’. Speaking after the win, proprietor Bede Jarrett said “If there’s one category that any butcher would like to win it’s the ‘Traditional Australian’, it’s the one to win, the most sought after category for sure!” As well as the 1st place, Bede received a 2nd place in the Continental category for his Italian Casalinga, and two 3rd places, one in the Aussie Lamb, for his Lamb, Honey and Mustard and another in the Gourmet category for his Wasabi and Pickled Ginger. As regional winner of the Traditional category, Jarrett’s Quality Meats will compete against the best in the state for the NSW/ACT title of Sausage King at a gala event in Wollongong in late October. Bede has held this title once before in 2009, and he looks forward to wresting the crown back to it’s rightful home in Lambton.

They’re tee’d off and need answers!

Hi Lambton Local, really impressed with the work you are doing, and I’ve one quick question - what was the picture of the round metal chain thing that is down at Jesmond park? I’ve been intrigued for ages about what they are for - and I was really pleased to see it in last month’s quiz. I was sure that you’d finally solve the mystery for me.... But this month my hopes were dashed – please, please, please let me know? Jane Davenport, Chilcott Street Lambton Thanks for a great magazine. In the August edition you had a picture on page 10 for the competition. I looked in the September edition to see the answers and what it was, but no luck. I know they are in Jesmond Park but not what they are used for. Can you please help? Maureen Taylor, Albert Street Lambton

Hey pollies: Is it time for electronic voting?

There is one question in particular that I would like asked of our aspiring politicians during the multiple elections we will endure in coming months. When will electronic voting be introduced? Many of us already lodge tax returns and otherwise communicate with government departments and agencies electronically via a MyGov account. It would be so much simpler and more convenient to be able to do our voting electronically via our smart phone or computer, instead of the usual half hour to walk over to the polling booth and stand in line. Surely this concept should not be too far away with all the money and resources the government has put into the electronic system. Personally I cannot see why they can’t just put in an administrator type person in the interim to represent our local interests. One politician seems to be as bad as the next. If someone is not trying to buy favour from them, then they are trying to bribe us with our own money to vote for them. Tom Eschebach, De Vitre Street Lambton

They baked, they iced they sold, so thanks!

Thanks to the many helpers who baked, iced, decorated and also ran our ‘Cupcakes for a Cure’ cake stall on 18th September. Special thanks to Donna Douglass, Julie Ebrill, Katrina Brennan, Tanya and Craig Dunn, Sally Gunn and our brilliant Wallabies, who served, spruiked and entertained the whole of Lambton for the morning!! It's so wonderful that an idea of Carley's to join in supporting The Kids' Cancer Project with our community could raise $1036 to help kids that are sick. Well done to everyone!! Our bakers were: Alana Daley, Kate Plummer, Angela Leung, Katrina Brennan, Julie Ebrill, Trudi Williams, Sally Gunn, Renata Payne, Tanya Dunn, Murray Ross, Mel Williams, Mel Berry, Sally Finnie, Carley Chippington, Tameika Yates, Carolyn Brooks, Kate Harrison, Donna Douglass, Cara Gray and I really hope I haven't forgotten anyone!! Pump it in pink for cancer research When Alison Marshall had the idea of holding an outdoor bootcamp in aid of charity she didn’t need to look far to find a worthy cause. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is October, so Ali and her husband Daniel, who operate an outdoor group fitness company, CoreFit Newcastle, decided to stage ‘Pump it in Pink’ on the morning of Saturday 11th October at Lambton Park in support of breast cancer research. “Breast cancer continues to touch so many families’ lives, including those of some of our clients so it was an easy decision to support this cause.” said Ali “We’ve had a fantastic response from the wonderful women and men that train with us regularly, but we also want to get the message out to the whole local

Lambton Property Report - Spring 2014 Selling...it’s what we’re here to do

When it comes to selling a property, sellers have one ‘simple’ request of their agents – get the best possible price in the shortest possible time. At Elders Real Estate Lambton that is what we set out to do every time we list a property… and our track record in achieving this outcome speaks for itself. Our rate of sales, client testimonials and almost countless awards bear this out. Like all we’ve worked hard to attain, we can’t do it without our clients’ help. We relish shouldering the heavier parts of the burden of selling. – it’s what we’re here to do – but the more you can to do facilitate a sale, the more you’ll reap the rewards. We offer a few tips (at right) for vendors to help us on the way to getting the best results. They range from highlighting some of the most important areas for you to address, to those final touches that might just help us get prospective buyers across the line. Call into our Elder Street office to speak to a local property expert. They’ll provide you with comprehensive advice on how to play your part in getting the most from your property sale.

BUILDING INSPECTION: Consult a building inspector and ask him to supply you with a signed report if there is something that needs rectifying, fix it. This is a great investment as it will ensure the contract will proceed to settlement most appraisals are ‘subject to building inspection’. DON’T HANG AROUND: Vanish to the neighbours’ place or the backyard when your agent brings a prospective buyer to your home. Nothing turns a buyer off faster than the owner trying to sell his own home as well as the agent, they think you are desperate. KNOW YOUR MARKET: Be realistic in your price expectations. Remember, if you are selling on a ‘down market’ you are also buying in a ‘down market’. Should you feel the price assessment is too low and you want confirmation of your market appraisal, consult a valuer. REPAIRS: Selling is the time to do those little things you have been putting off – sticking windows, loose door knobs, dripping taps, broken wire doors, leaking gutters, etc. DECORATE: Remove any dirty marks from the walls and ceilings, touch up any chipped woodwork or torn wallpaper. In some cases a paint job costing only a few hundred dollars can add a few thousand to the eventual selling price. Keep paint colours neutral tones, unless they are feature walls. EXTRA SPACE: Have your home comfortable and uncluttered. Clear benchtops and remove excess furniture to give a spacious feeling.

Renting - finding the right rental property Rent and save There a many reasons for renting, from affordability issues to getting the feel of an unfamiliar area without actually making the commitment to buy a house. For many young people renting is their first foray away from the family home. For established home owners, it can take the pressure off finding a new home if they have sold one place and haven’t yet decided on a replacement. Or it can give you a ‘try before you buy’ insight into a new area. Whatever your reason for renting, Elders Lambton can help you find a house, townhouse or apartment that has ticks in all the right boxes: location, lifestyle, quality, availability and affordability. In fact our rental service is so friendly and professional ...you’ll rent and rave about it to all your friends. Elders Lambton believe in “Creating Clients for Life”.

Finding the place Renting a property is very similar top buying in terms of what you should look for, so you should make the same checks and set yourself the same criteria. The big difference is you are governed by someone else’s rules, so check on things such as whether pets are allowed or not. When it comes to actually looking, remember what they say about the early bird, visit elderslambton. com.au, get the paper early and call your agent frequently. What to look for and where to look First you must decide on what type of dwelling you’re looking for, be it the spaciousness of a home, the affordability of shared accommodation, the style of a modern townhouse or the convenience of a unit. Then you have to decide where you’d like to live, close to family, friends, work or school.

‘Tis the season to stay safe says sparky

Above: Lambton electrician, Duayne Cook installing an outdoor power outlet Lambton electrician Duayne Cook’s wish for Christmas this year is that local families take greater care with their Christmas light displays. “In my years in the trade I’ve seen householders taking unnecessary risks with electricity. This is never more apparent than at Christmas-time when the traditional light extravaganzas dot our streets. There’s no doubt kids, and most adults too, enjoy the light shows at this special time of year but it’s pretty easy to take the right steps and keep your family and property safe.” Duayne said. Duayne has given us his 10 tips on having a safer Christmas lights display this year:. 1. When decorating the outside of your house choose lights designed for external use. 2. Attach your lights with tape, cable ties or clips, never use nails or staples. 3. Don’t install, move or adjust Christmas lights whilst they are turned on. 4. Always unplug your outside Christmas lights in rainy or windy conditions. 5. Check that you have a safety switch in your meter box or have your local electrician install one. 6. Take care not to overcrowd power points, and keep power boards and adaptors out of children’s reach. 7. Place extension leads where they won’t be trip hazards or become damaged. 8. Ensure lead connections aren’t exposed to the weather. There are plenty of products available to assist you here. 9. Never run power leads through windows or doorways, instead have your local electrician install an outdoor outlet. 10. Educate kids on the importance of electrical safety, especially the motto “Look but don’t touch”. To ‘thank’ us for being safe, Duayne will donate $20 to a local Christmas charity for every outdoor powerpoint he installs between October and December within the Lambton Local readership area.

Last month I went into some detail about how to go about meaningful goal setting. The next step in the process is to ‘find your WHY’. There will always be obstacles on your way to achieving your goal and having a strong ‘why’ will help you say no to anything that will stops you achieving your very best. For example as a personal trainer I hear a lot ‘I want to lose weight to be healthy.’ While this is great this does not go far enough. What does ‘healthy’ actually mean to you? •

Does it mean being healthy enough to attend your families big events?

•

Does it mean you can run around after your kids or grandkids at the local park?

•

Does it mean fitting into your skinny jeans and feeling confident about how you look?

There is no right or wrong but your why needs to be something you can visualise and emotionally connect to.

Sunday, 5th October @ 9am St John The Baptist Church ~18 Morehead Street, Lambton~

Come along and bring your pets, then join us for morning tea!

This way when you head to the fridge for that piece of cake you know you shouldn’t have or think fast food for lunch might be a good idea, you will remember your WHY and you will make the right choice of the healthier option. So as you can see, defining your WHY is very important to help keep you motivated and on track. Next month I will help you make a plan to achieve your goals but until then, ‘Love life, dream big and become the inspiration’.

Drive-in memories For almost 30 years of last century Lambton SkyLine Drive-in shone brightly as an entertainment venue for families and romantic young couples alike. Norma Tonks of Lambton recently shared her memories and photos of the Drive-in with Lambton Local.

Clockwise from above: the screen, the cafe/projector building and the entrance gates to the Skyline Drivein just prior to demolition in the late 1980’s.

“In 1956, just as we were building our first home in Pride Avenue, the Drive-in theatre was being developed in the bush down behind our block. It opened on 16th October1956 to a full house of 720 cars.” Norma said. The first movie shown was ‘The Best Things In Life Are Free’. “It operated six nights a week with sessions at 7.30 and 9.30 pm. In the early 1980’s the Drive-in closed for quite a period as the home video market boomed. It reopened for a couple of years on a limited timetable before its final screening on 26th June 1985. The double bill on that last night was ‘Night Patrol’ and ‘Porky’s Revenge.’ As well as catering to the usual carloads of patrons, the Drive-in was a meeting place for local teenagers who were allowed to walk in and sit at the cafe tables where there were speakers to listen to the movie. To give more recent arrivals to Lambton an idea of where the Drive-in stood, the entrance gates were at the bottom of Barellan Street, whilst the exit road met up with the western end of Chilcott Street. What today is Drysdale Drive, was once the perimeter road around the Drive-in. Demolition after the Drive-in’s closure made way for the new Lambton Gardens sub-division where Norma and her husband built their second home. Before demolition was complete thankfully Norma snapped the photos on this page.

Jim’s recollections, both old and new, For 88 years, my wonderful father has lived in Lambton, born in a house in Karoola Road. Dad loves Lambton, and all the history he has experienced, the changes he has seen, and the stories he can tell, are pretty amazing!! Ronald Clarke, fondly known as ‘Jim”, is still an active member of our diverse community, and the Lambton Bowling Club is his special place, to play bowls, meet with other octogenarians, enjoy lots of fun, a few beers and a good yarn! Great joy when he wins a tray of meat! His daily motto is, “seize the day”, but of course he says it in Latin! As we drive around the area, he often reminisces about the times he played in Pearson Street with all the other kids, and went horseback riding in the bush,

Lambton has always been home for Jim Clarke of George Street

where now stands the John Hunter Hospital. He tells his great grandchildren stories of how he learnt to swim, by being thrown into the quarry in Henry Street, by his so-called mates, and how he never owned a pair of shoes until he was 14 years old!

He went to Lambton Primary and High Schools, but used to ‘wag’ and run to the local horse riding stables, as he hated school so much. Of course he had to suffer the consequences of the muchhated cane, especially when he hid it from the sadistic teacher. His family lived at 144 Newcastle Road for many years, a two storey place at the intersection with Morehead Street, which is pretty dilapidated at present. It used to be an old pub named the “The Red Lion”, and his mother, wife and children lived there for many years. There were once many coal mines in the Lambton area, and Jim’s father worked in knee high cold water for many years there. He passed away at only 58 years of age, suffering from heart problems and severe rheumatics.

Young children need you. Children in the Newcastle and Central Coast areas need to be cared for by foster carers for a few weeks up to several months. We provide training, 24hr support and a generous allowance.

show his love of the Lambton life.....

Jim often talks about how he worked in the local abattoir as a 14 year old, where he especially hated the area where offal was processed. He would be given some meat to take home to his mum Ruth. She would appreciate this trying to feed a growing family during the depression and war years. Jim knows how lucky he was to escape enlistment in the war as his work at the abattoir was protected as it was considered an essential service. His brother Len however was a fighter pilot who luckily, returned home after the war.

Young Jim lived in Pearson Street for a number of years. It was for him a little community of its own. He often says “the good old days” weren’t good at all! They were hard years, where there was little money, sometimes only coupons for food. Families in his street would share what they had, especially food, clothing and the local paper. Horse and cart would deliver ice, milk, bread and meat. Pinching fruit was a way of keeping hunger at bay, and a little book Jim kept would tell him of fruit trees in the area, and the

Formerly the Red Lion Inn, 144 Newcastle Road is where Jim and his family made their home for many years.

dogs in their yards that would greet him on his mission. Jim eats a lot of fruit to this day! As a boy he played in Lambton Park with its huge trees, and listened to the local band in the rotunda on Sunday afternoons. The local pubs were frequented by the Clarke family, and played an important part in their social lives. Today a new generation of young families enjoy our peaceful Lambton. We experience a more diverse community now, with people from many nations and cultures living happily side by side. That’s what makes Lambton so great! Like my dad, their children play in Lambton Park. I know that he is so proud to say that he still loves living here and that this is his favourite place to “Carpe diem”. by Suzanne Clarke

‘The Boys’ may shock but won’t disappoint Newcastle Theatre Company’s (NTC) 2014 season continues in early October with The Boys, a play by Gordon Graham. Inspired by the 1986 murder of Anita Cobby in Sydney, The Boys is a profoundly disturbing, visceral play which examines both the events that lead up to an appalling climax and the aftermath; shedding light on a sadly dysfunctional family of a mother, her three sons and their girlfriends. The household awaits, with a mixture of excitement, hope and anticipation, the return of its eldest son, Brett, after a year in prison; but things have changed and he quickly realises his power base is under threat. He has not had a good time in prison and he seems determined that someone must pay a price for that. Sandra, his mother, believes in her Number One son, as does his girlfriend Michelle. Brett thinks she may have strayed in his absence, but the others are not so sure. Brett needs a powerful set of wheels, immediately, for his image, and he doesnʼt care how he gets them, but things just donʼt go his way. John Wood directs a highly talented NTC cast, led by Michael Byrneʼs power hungry Brett and the worn-

down Sandra played by Cheryl Sovechles; the cast is completed by Amy Wilde, Craig Lindeman, Natasha Steggles, Duncan Gordon and Cherie Mackinnon. This is a courageous play that we can be proud to call Australian. It has a lot to say about a society that accepts the dogma that the very rich just get richer and the poor have little hope of ever altering their lifeʼs trajectory. Be brave and come and meet the Sprague family. You may be shocked but wonʼt be disappointed.

Controlling and preventing fleas during the warmer months

Our up and coming warmer spring months are ideal for rapid flea breeding and flea egg hatching. The adult female flea needs a blood meal from your pet before she lays eggs. Once these eggs are laid, they hatch into larvae and pupate and can survive for up to six months while they wait for ideal conditions. Fleas are one of the most common causes of skin allergy in dogs and cats. They are also important vectors of diseases and parasites such as tapeworm. To look for fleas, part your pet’s fur and check for small black dots or white dandruff. The black dots are flea faeces which is mainly your pet’s digested blood. If you want confirmation of this, put the black dirt on white paper, add a few drops of water, and the water and paper will turn red. Severe flea infestations will even turn bath water red! The white dandruff is either round flea eggs or white flakey skin from the skin irritation the dermatitis produces. A flea comb is a great way of harvesting this debris to monitor your pet’s flea control. Flea treatment involves adulticide products killing adult fleas and life-cycle products to stop eggs hatching. Eggs and pupae can’t be killed by chemicals. That is why you may notice young fleas on your dog or cat for up to six months after you have started regular flea treatment. Cleaning the environment is also helpful. Continually washing bedding and vacuuming around where your pet lies is helpful. There are many products available for integrated flea control available from your local Greencross Vet Clinic at Elder Street Lambton.

Greg Combet has been at the centre of some of the biggest battles of our time; the waterfront dispute, the collapse of an airline, compensation for asbestos victims, the campaign against unfair workplace laws and then climate change. From

an isolated childhood on the Minchinbury estate west of Sydney, Combet’s world changed dramatically with the early death of his father, a wine-maker. Facing many challenges, he rose to lead the Australian trade union movement and become a senior minister in the Rudd and Gillard Labor governments. Along the way he struggled with political ideology, the impact of work on his family and the relentless demands of the parliamentary life. The Fights of My Life is the story of a man who faces up to the power structures of politics, big business and the media.

This House of Grief: the story of a murder trial by Helen Garner On the evening of 4 September 2005, Robert Farquharson, a separated husband, was driving his three sons home to their mother when his car plunged into a dam. The boys aged ten, seven, and two, drowned. Was this an act of deliberate revenge or a tragic accident? The court case became Helen Garner’s obsession. She was in the courtroom every day of Farquharson’s trial and subsequent retrial, along with countless journalists and the families of both the accused and his former wife.

In this utterly compelling book, Helen Garner tells the story of this man and his broken life. At its core is a search for truth that takes author and reader through complex psychological terrain. Garner exposes, with great compassion, that truth and justice are as complex as human frailty and morality.
