What is Remembrance Day? At 11 am on 11th November 1918, the guns on the Western Front in Europe fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven their enemy back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. The Germans had called for an armistice, or suspension of fighting, in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marked the armistice and attained a special significance in the ensuing years and became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the Great War. After the Second World War, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day so as to remember those who lost their life not only in 1914-18 but in all wars. Lambton-New Lambton RSL sub-Branch will mark Remembrance Day at Lambton Bowling Club The members of Lambton-New Lambton RSL subBranch will commemorate the 96th anniversary this important day on Tuesday 11th November with a special service at Lambton Bowling Club. Students from a number of local schools including Lambton Public, Lambton High, St Therese’s Primary, New Lambton Public and Hamilton Public will take part in the service. The community is invited and most welcome to attend the service which commences at the Bowling Club at 10.45 am. The centenary of the Gallipoli landing is only six months away on Anzac Day, 25th April 2015. Lambton Local, with the assistance of LambtonNew Lambton RSL sub-Branch is planning a special publication to honour those locals from Lambton and New Lambton who went to war in 1914-18 but did not return. Above left on page 2 you will see the Honour Roll of the fallen who enlisted locally. Creative abilities shine through The Samaritans Foundation has chosen Lambton as the venue for its annual Art Exhibition this year. Now in its 12th year, the Art Exhibition showcases artworks, photography and other pieces composed by people with disabilities who take part in a number of Samaritans programs. It will be held on Friday 21st November at St John the Baptist Anglican Church Hall, Morehead Street, from 6 to 9 pm. One of the organisers of the event Rebecca Everingham says the event is “ An absolute highlight of the year for the artists. They’ve been working on some of the pieces for up to 12 months, so it’s quite exciting, to finally see their work finished, and hung on exhibition...and for sale!” “All the art in the Exhibition is

Preschool and high school work together for For more than 45 years Jesmond Community Preschool, has been providing enriched learning environments and excellent educational outcomes for its pre-schoolers. The preschool, located in the grounds of Callaghan Senior College, has always had a strong association with both the high school and Heaton Public School, which is on site also. Preschool Director Haylee Davis approached the College’s Construction teacher Clint Johns earlier this year and asked if they would help the preschool out with the construction of a Bali hut. “The Construction students at Callaghan College worked with the preschool to bring our vision of improving our playground come true. It was the vision of two of our preschool educators, Shari Sharkey and Tracy Baker to create a Bali-styled relaxation area where the children could rest and take some quite time. The students worked with the preschool teachers and children to come up with a basic idea and began measuring and constructing our Bali hut.” Haylee said. Callaghan College construction students, Jesmond Community Preschoolers and staff celebrated the completion of the project with a barbecue
Mr Johns dreamt of an even bigger project and began building a large river bed with a running stream for the children to play with, a pathway and even a car track and car shed. “The high school students engaged really well with the children and showed terrific respect. Every day the preschoolers would run to the end of the playground to see if the ‘big kids’, as they called them were there.” Haylee added.

Sweet as! Summer series runs rings
Runners of all abilities are welcome to join in the free ‘Sweet Bean Summer Series’ held at Lambton Park every Thursday at 6pm during the daylight saving months
As a grass roots, community-based sport, running has enjoyed unprecedented growth in popularity in recent years, especially in Newcastle and surrounding areas. So much so that Newcastle and the Hunter is referred to in running circles as the ‘Region of Runners’. The Sweet Bean Summer Series is part of that growth right here in Lambton. The Summer Series is a weekly run with no entry fees held at Lambton Park. It’s on every Thursday evening from now until April 2015 with a 6pm race start. According to Chris Olsen, one of the event organisers, “The best thing about the Sweet Bean Summer Series is there’s no pressure; you can run the event as fast or as slow as you like.” “Those familiar with the worldwide phenomenon called parkrun will see the similarities. You simply turn up when you can. There are no dramas if you can’t make it every week. There’s nothing but encouragement, camaraderie and the pure enjoyment of running’s many benefits, including physical, emotional and mental wellbeing”. Chris added.

Pink pumpers packed the park More than 60 keen participants took part in the ‘Pump it in Pink’ charity bootcamp held in the shadow of Lambton Park’s iconic rotunda in October. Organisers of the event Ali and Daniel Marshall of CoreFit Newcastle where amazed by the turnout. “It’s just great to see so many people, from all walks of life and of all different fitness levels out early on a Saturday morning doing something positive for their health and raising money for a great cause” Daniel said.
“We staged the event to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. For our first event we are pleased to have raised $600 which has been donated to the Foundation. Some survivors of breast and other cancers came along to the event and it was fantastic to see them. We hope everyone can make our next event even bigger.” Ali added. Tomahawk Joe was friend not foe
In the late 1920’s and early 1930’s the mothers of Lambton area knew they need only mention the name of one local man to ensure their youngsters behaved. Kazan Champion, better known as Tomahawk Joe, was a man whose stature (he was almost two metres tall) was matched only by his manly skills and exploits. Kazan was a well-educated American
who served in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and was at one point a Sheriff of El Paso, Texas. He came to Australia in 1914 and spent six years living amongst the indigenous people of Queensland before coming to Newcastle. He lived in Michael Street Jesmond. His sheer size and unruly beard made him instantly recognisable in the community. Whilst he was
a ‘bogey man’ for many local children, those who took the time, got to know him as a quietlyspoken gentle giant. Tomahawk Joe at right was instantly recognisable in the community due to his stature and his unruly beard. At left he is posing at a knife throwing display.
Tomahawk Joe performed at carnivals and fairs, demonstrating his knife, tomahawk and firearms skills. He was also a fearless reptile handler. Aside from carnival work he made a living selling home-made herbal remedies door-to-door in the area. Afternoon of fashion and fun pays off More than 150 women from the local area and other parts enjoyed the ‘Just for us Girls’ afternoon of fun, fashion and pampering at St Johns Anglican Church Hall in Lambton in October. The afternoon included a fashion parade with local women modelling, jewellery, beauty products and candles on sale, as well as aromatherapy, massage and cosmetics demonstrations. There were lucky door prizes drawn as well as free gifts and samples from a variety of suppliers. Organisers of the event, Reverend Maree Armstrong and Glenda Smith from Jenda Collection were both pleased with the event and will definitely do something like this again. “It was a huge success. The feedback was great and the total
from door sales was $2856. This will go towards our annual Carols by Candlelight which is to be held in the church grounds on Saturday 6th December. The hiring of the stage alone costs $3500, so it is great to get a big amount like this in one event!” Reverend Maree said.

Don Bradman’s cricket career had five years yet to run and the future Queen Elizabeth was but a teenager when local couple Hazel and Dick Hoy were married in August 1944. They are pictured above at their 70th anniversary celebrations in August this year. Lambton has always been home for the Hoys, in fact Dick has only ever known the one home, in Nerong Rd. Raising three daughters there, Brenda, Vicki and Sharon. All of whom attended Lambton Public School. Happy anniversary Hazel and Dick. Here’s to many more!
