This edition of Lambton Local marks one year since your new local newspaper commenced publishing. I’d like to express my thanks to the local community for welcoming the Local into their homes. I won’t easily forget that wet week in April last year when I had sold, written and printed edition #1 and set off to deliver it single-handedly to more than 3,700 letterboxes in Lambton and North Lambton. I can admit now to being just a little worried I’d bitten off more than I could chew and that perhaps I should make it a one-off publication. Every time I dropped in at home for more copies to deliver however, I had one or more email or voice mail messages to return offering help with future editions or deliveries, enquiries about advertising, story ideas or people just wanting to say “Thank you”. I knew then that Lambton Local was being well-received and there had to be more than the one edition. I have a few ideas to improve on what
Lambton Local already does, but a newspaper belongs to its community more than its publisher. The community turned out in force for the recent ANZAC Day commemorative services in Lambton. As witnessed right across Newcastle, the Hunter and indeed the country, the centenary of the Gallipoli landing really struck a chord with Australians of all ages. Spokesman for Lambton-New Lambton RSL subBranch, Warwick Budden said “We were very pleased with the size of the crowd gathered at each of the shorter memorial services in and around Lambton, especially at the Morehead Street memorial gates. Once we marched to the main service at Lambton Bowling Club we were astounded to see that it was standing room only.” “It goes to show how much the ANZAC stories of courage in the face of adversity, of mateship, and of sacrifice still resonate through the years. The local servicemen and women of all wars would be rightly proud of how their community continues to show gratitude for their service” Mr Budden concluded. Multicultural Services Expo on again The Multicultural Neighbourood Centre is staging its annual Multicultural Services Expo at its Illalung Rd (corner of Orlando Rd) Lambton premises on Wednesday 27th May. The Expo is held each year to celebrate cultural diversity, assist people to find out more about the services and programs available to people of all ages from nonEnglish speaking backgrounds and enjoy multicultural food tastings and performances. As the clean-up following April’s category 2 cyclone continues, Newcastle City Council has come to the party with free drop-off of green waste and bulk waste but only for a limited time. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said that “…now the storm emergency has passed, we are able to focus on the city’s recovery. Newcastle and the Hunter have taken a battering…and there is a lot to clean up. We are pleased to be able to help our community recover by offering free bulk and green waste drop offs at Summerhill Waste Management Centre.” “Due to the amount of green waste across the city, we would appreciate everyone separating green waste from bulk waste wherever possible” the Lord Mayor added. This offer is available until Sunday 10th May. Proof of residency will be required so remember to take your drivers licence or a Council rates notice with you. Another option for householders is to book a free kerbside waste collection and have council staff take the waste away for you. Bear in mind however that this regular service is pre-booked four weeks ahead so there could be a considerable wait before your waste is collected. Locals’ good turn in Park gardens
Organisers of the first community gardening morning have declared it a great success. An idea of the Lambton Residents Group, the community gardening team took it on themselves to tidy up and mulch the two L-shaped garden beds adjacent to the Lambton Park memorial gates ahead of ANZAC Day. “The day was a great success and we’re pleased with the result. The weather held and was perfect for gardening. I think perhaps we can do this successfully once every few months. We are open to suggestion as to where we should go next while maintaining the good work we’ve done here. Stay tuned for our next event in late winter or early spring” said group organiser Ruth Purvis.

Fire & Rescue NSW will hold its annual Open Day with fire stations across the State, including our own Lambton Fire Station, throwing open their doors on Saturday 30th May to give visitors a glimpse into Australia’s busiest fire and rescue service. More than 80,000 people attend Open Day across NSW each year. Lambton 357 Station Captain Barry Griffin reported that the 2014 event was the biggest crowd that Lambton had seen at Open Day “Open Day will include safety demonstrations, fire station tours and the chance to inspect fire-fighting equipment and trucks used by our firefighters when responding to fires and other emergencies. There is also an array of activities for kids.” Captain Griffin said. Visitors can also speak to local firefighters first-hand about fire safety in the home, including how to install and maintain smoke alarms, how to develop a home escape plan to ensure they can quickly and safely escape a fire. Flooding fields put kids at risk by Lydia Watson-Moore
Lambton Jaffas Junior Soccer Club is urging Hunter Water to clear out a creek that floods playing fields with debris, including syringes. Lambton Ker-rai carries storm water through Lambton Park, but build-up of vegetation is causing it to spill onto fields when it rains. Junior Soccer Club secretary Jenny Bailey said the safety of children using the fields and playground was the club’s main concern. “We just don’t know what’s in the creek,” Mrs Bailey said. “We see so many kids going in there.” The club asked Hunter Water two years ago to clear reeds from the creek, but is still waiting. “We will be writing a strong letter to Hunter Water, asking for some action,” Mrs Bailey said. Lambton Residents Group has raised the state of the creek with Newcastle City councillors Andrea Rufo and Declan Clausen. Residents’ Group spokesperson Nicola Hirschhorn said water was building up near the footbridge over the creek, between the rotunda and tennis courts.

“This could explain the bad mossie season we have had,” Ms Hirschhorn said. Hunter Water spokesman Nick Kaiser said in an email that vegetation in and around the creek slowed the passage of water, preventing erosion, but could also lead to increased flood risk in heavy rain. “Previous instances of clearing Lambton Ker-rai of vegetation has led to complaints from Local Land Services and Lambton High School, which uses the creek as part of Stream Watch program, regarding the adverse effect on the waterway’s ecology,” Mr Kaiser said. Hunter Water was now managing the creek ‘in consideration of the local ecology’, and would continue working with the council and stakeholders to establish a suitable maintenance program, he said. Local Land Services Lower Hunter district coordinator Ingrid Berthold said Lambton Ker-rai was not just a waterway, but an important ecosystem. “If you don’t have any materials to block the flow, you get a higher water point or ‘flood peak’,” Ms Berthold said. “The benefits of vegetation and rushes are to help trap rubbish, help to clean the water, and help with nutrients and sediments,” she said. But while ecology was important, safety of children should be the main concern, Mrs Bailey said. “The creek needs to flow, it needs to be safe,” she said. “There are a lot of children around. The playground and the surrounding parkland needs to be safe, and I don’t think it is after rain.” Lydia is a Lambton resident who is studying Journalism at University of Technology in Sydney.

The Member of State Parliament representing the Lambton area, Sonia Hornery MP, was returned to the Seat of Wallsend with a margin of 20.8% in the election held in late March. The Seat of Wallsend spans Lambton, North Lambton, New Lambton, Jesmond and a number of other western Newcastle suburbs. Ms Hornery said the margin was an increase of 18.84% on the primary vote and an increase of 14.5% after preferences. “I cannot thank the people of Wallsend electorate enough for giving me the privilege of serving four more years as their Member of Parliament,” said Ms Hornery. “The Labor party learnt a lot of lessons following our defeat at the 2011 State Election. Over the past four years the party has rebuilt and worked hard to regain the trust of the people right across the Hunter.” “The focus will now be on working hard with the community to deliver great outcomes for the people of Wallsend. I look forward to being part of the Hunter Labor Team that will be working hard to hold the Baird Government to account on their promises for the Hunter,” said Ms Hornery. A brand new state-of-the-art blood donor centre will open on Lambton’s doorstep in early May, with the Blood Service announcing plans for their new home at 163 Lambton Rd, Broadmeadow. The new facility, on the ground floor of the Master Builders Association complex, will be geared to meet the projected need for blood over the next 20 years, and will be one of the state’s newest and largest blood donor centres.

Blood Service spokesperson Jemma Falkenmire said the centre would be open for business in early May. “We’ve been investigating options for some time and this site was chosen in response to feedback from Hunter blood donors and the community,” “The centre’s prime location, ample free parking and wide choice of appointment times will make donating easier and even more convenient for workers, shoppers, students and visitors,” The new facility will replace the existing Watt Street Newcastle Donor Centre and will receive more than 14,000 litres of donated blood each year. “Cancer patients, people with immune deficiencies and newborn babies all continue to rely on these lifesaving donations that flow from our donors to more than 600 hospitals around Australia. Lambton’s Kingfishers to fly even
Tupou Toleafoa leading the way upfield from the Kingfishers goal line against Wallsend Maryland in the first round of the 2015 NHRL 2nd division competition. The Kingfishers prevailed in the season opener 30 points to 22.
With two wins from as many starts the Lambton Kingfishers RLFC are looking very much at home in B-grade this season. The Kingfishers showed plenty of grit and determination to make the C-grade final series in 2014. This was a remarkable achievement given it was their first season in the competition after 11 long years in the football wilderness. The 2014 success coupled with their pre-season form this year led to their promotion to B-grade for the 2015 season. Under the stewardship of coach Riki Tupou and captain Joseph Peterson, the Kingfishers are ready to take on all comers. With plenty of new sponsors coming on board for 2015 the Club’s future looks promising. “The community is warmly invited to come along and support their local Rugby League side, especially at our home games at Ford Oval. Come along and make some noise” said Club president Renee Tupou. The season fixture can be found on the facing page.

Lambton then, Lambton now The many roads to town by Lachlan Wetherall For years I was curious as to why the main road from Wallsend into Newcastle bears so many names … Newcastle Rd, Griffiths Rd, Donald St. It turns out that the substantial traffic corridor into town that we see today is a relatively recent patchwork of disparate roads connected together. In Lambton’s early days the roads between townships and into Newcastle were unplanned tracks meandering across the landscape. In 1874 the residents of Lambton and other communities agitated for the government to construct a proper road from Wallsend to Newcastle, noting in a public meeting on 23rd April 1874 “that, up till the year 1873, no road, except a bush road, has existed”. Although there was broad agreement that a new road was needed, there was considerable disagreement on where to build it, some supporting a northern route through via

Young Rd and others a southern route through New Lambton. The disagreement was so heated that the public meeting ended in great confusion and no decision when “every symptom of a free fight became apparent.” The dispute was so dogged in the following months that eventually the Government approved the construction of both roads. Ninety years on however, neither route was the main road. In the 1960s and 70s, Newcastle Rd was widened, Griffiths Rd constructed, and the Donald St railway overpass erected to form the four lane road to town we know today.

The benefits of exercise We all know that exercise aids in weight loss but even if you are not trying to lose weight you should be getting in the recommended 30 minutes of exercise each day. Exercise has many benefits other than weight loss like………
Improving memory When we exercise the brain receives more oxygen so it can function better. As we get older the sad fact is our brain goes into cognitive decline. Regular exercise throughout your life can prevent degeneration of what is called the hippocampus which is an important part of the brain that aids in memory and learning. Improves your skin Exercise enhances blood flow to your skin which helps your skin to glow. It also helps in the production of hormones like DHEA and DHT which help in the prevention of acne. Improves productivity Research shows that exercising on a regular bases gives you more energy and helps you focus more throughout the day. When you feel like you aren’t getting anywhere with something then go for a 10 min walk and this will help refocus the mind. Improves your sex life When you exercise it triggers adrenaline and other feel good hormones. Exercise also increases selfesteem and self-confidence so when you are feeling good and looking good it all helps. There are many other wonderful benefits to exercise I haven’t gone into but these are just a few. Exercise and being healthy is about improving your lifestyle as well as your waist line. I know the weather has been getting colder lately but get out there and get that 30 minutes of exercise in each day and you will see the benefits for yourself. So until next time….. The greek philosopher Aristotle asked , “what is the chief purpose of human existence”? His own answer was ‘the pursuit of happiness’. Aristotle distinguished happiness from pleasure. While many people pursue wealth, power, fame, influence, titles and the acquisition of things, he argued, these are only pursued in the belief that they will lead us to happiness. I have seen many people in my Consulting Rooms who have achieved these ‘pleasures’ but are miserable in their lives. But for Aristotle, happiness is something deeper, an end in itself and never for the sake of something else. How does this work out in daily life? In my experience, there are two factors that help bring such happiness and if you like, stave off depression. These are human interaction and meaningful activity. Human beings are mammals and thus are social

creatures. We need other humans. When we are isolated, we struggle. People with depression often isolate themselves. I call it ‘going into the cave’. The cave is a place of helplessness, hopelessness and sometimes worthlessness. We need to take time to look after all our relationships; that special person, family, friends. ‘No man is an island’. We need other people in our lives in order to thrive. But we also need to do something. We need meaningful activity. With nothing meaningful to do, we struggle. Life can seem pointless and boredom can set in leading to depression. I see plenty of retired people with nothing to do who are struggling badly. Meaningful activity at every stage of life is essential. Both relationships and meaningful activity are two important keys that bring a deeper sense of happiness, far beyond anything that money or fame will do.

Healthy ears are pink, clean, and have a pleasant smell. Ears that are dirty, smelly, red, swollen and obviously uncomfortable are abnormal. The causes of these abnormalities can be bacterial or fungal infections, mite infections, polyps, cysts or foreign bodies in the ear canals, the result of a cat fight, solar dermatitis, skin cancer and haematomas. Don’t attempt to clean your pet’s ears unless it is medical treatment. Cleaning may traumatise the ear lining and make an existing problem worse. Pets with ear problems should be checked, under anaesthetic if necessary, to ensure a correct diagnosis and a proper treatment regime. Drops are used for bacterial, fungal and mite infections. An anaesthetic may be needed for cleaning the canal without damaging the lining or the ear drum, or to surgically deal with wounds, haematomas, polyps and cysts. Some ear problems extend to the middle ear and can affect the balance and the bony case housing the middle ear. Tests and surgery by specialists may be needed for certain deep seated and unusual problems.
