Ker-rai cleaned up Lambton Ker-rai, the creek which runs through Lambton Park, has in recent weeks been cleared of sediment and overgrowth to improve the flow of water through the creek and prevent flooding. The creek is a Hunter Water managed stormwater channel, which was flooding regularly in heavy rain and impacting the local soccer club and other park users. Hunter Water spokesperson and Lambton resident Nick Kaiser said managing Lambton Ker-rai required a balance between the environment and functionality. “Lambton Ker-rai is part of the local Lambton environment and today functions as a stormwater channel that eventually flows to the ocean. “The creek was last cleared five years ago, attracting some criticism for the impact it had on Ker-rai’s own micro ecosystem. Hunter Water will work with the City of Newcastle and the Lambton community to vegetate and stabilise the creek so it can serve as a natural habitat as well as a stormwater channel. “It’s important for us as locals to also remember that things like grass clippings, dog poo and car wash detergent entering the stormwater channel can lead to excessive growth in the creek, as well as pollute downstream waterways and our beaches,” he said. At the time of writing, some cleared sediment was still sitting on the northern bank of the creek near the tennis courts as Hunter Water waits for the ground to dry out before bringing trucks onto the park.

Benefit night for Col and family
Colin Manton’s is a face that many local people will know. His ready smile and helping hand are a common sight in the New Lambton community. Due to a rare auto-immune condition the tables have now turned and Colin and his family could now use the community’s help. Col was struck by Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) whilst enjoying a family holiday at Pacific Palms in January. GBS is a rare, insidious, mysterious, and devastating condition that causes a spreading paralysis. The cause is unknown, although the trigger seems to be an acute viral or bacterial infection. The statistics say that one in 100,000 are struck by GBS.

Some make a complete recovery over a period of two years or more, while others will be left with permanent disability. There is no cure, but some treatments can help recovery. Col is understood to have a severe case of the syndrome. Six months after being struck down, he remains in intensive care at John Hunter Hospital, having been airlifted from Taree in January. Until very recently Col required mechanical assistance to breathe, speak and swallow. In recent weeks he has progressed to eating solid food. His wife Mary spends most of her waking hours with Col in the ICU and their children are with him as often as possible, making time every day to spend a few hours with Dad. Family and friends have rallied around, offering assistance wherever they can to Col, Mary and the kids. A benefit night, featuring a silent auction and raffles to raise much-needed funds for Col and his family is being held at the Duke of Wellington Hotel, New Lambton on Saturday August 15th. Cubs and Joeys visit Family History Society On 1 June two Lambton community groups came st
together when the Lambton-Waratah Cubs and Joeys met in the Newcastle Family History Society’s library located in the historic Lambton Mechanics Institute, Elder Street Lambton. This visit was part of the Cubs’ Local History badge and the Joeys’ Adventure Challenge badge. The young visitors and their parents were very interested in the history of Lambton and in particular to hear of how the Mechanics Institute contributed to the social and educational needs of the adult community at the time when Lambton was a mining village. The Mechanics Institute was formed in 1865 the first meetings were held in the Lambton Public School. The present building was opened in 1894.

Dear Lambton Local My name is Eilish Butler, I am a year 10 student at Hunter School of Performing Arts. My school believes that building leadership skills, teamwork, resilience and contributing to our world community are important. So do I. At the end of December 2015 and early January 2016, along with other students from my school I will have the amazing opportunity to join a World Challenge team to Borneo. During the last 12 months World Challenge teams have worked on over 275 project sites around the world. Our team will be able to help local children by renovating learning facilities; water pumps for clean water and help build amenities such as toilet blocks and library facilities. Other projects may be assisting with fencing, planting vegetable gardens or even helping to the children with their schoolwork while we are there. To fund the trip and to contribute to the projects I am asking for the help of my community. More than 100 revellers attended the “Back to Lambton Night” held at Lambton Bowls Sports and Recreation Club on 13th June. According to organiser Laurel Leddy of the ‘One to One’ fundraising group, a figure of around $2,500 was raised from the evening through ticket sales, raffles and other novelty events. All proceeds will go to the Mark Hughes Foundation and be used for research into Brain Cancer. In preparation for Lambton Public School’s 150th Anniversary in September of this year, former pupil Robert Watson is encouraging Lambton residents to go through their old boxes of photos looking for interesting items. As shown here even damaged photos can provide great insights into the past. The photo below was quite damaged, but with about 30 minutes work on the computer, Robert has been able to make it look almost new (above right).

Here are some tips if you are an individual tax payer. Without receipts, you can claim up to a total of $300 in work related expenses, such as uniform laundry costs, stationery and travel costs.
Work tools and equipment, computer accessories and any other items purchased directly in connection with your employment that are not reimbursed by your employer, can be claimed. All items below $300 in value are immediately deductible while anything above this can be depreciated. Make sure to collect all the receipts or credit card statements as this is good evidence to justify your claim. If you keep a log book for your vehicle over a 12 week period you may be able to significantly increase your tax deduction by claiming the work related percentage of all vehicle costs, including fuel and insurance. Lambton then, Lambton now In search of Paddy Lewis

When I moved to Lambton and read through the Newcastle Family History Society’s “The Story of Lambton”, I was intrigued by the photos of a picnic destination variously described as “Nellie’s Glen”, “Glen Lewis”, or “Paddy Lewis Dam”, and I wondered where this beautiful spot was. The location appeared idyllic enough that it even featured on a postcard in the early 1900s.
The engine, for reasons now unknown, was called “Paddy Lewis” and the dam in the foreground supplied water to the steam boiler.
I set myself the challenge of finding “Paddy Lewis”, and recently, after assistance from some old maps, Google Earth and the National Museum of Australia, I was able to confirm the location of this picturesque site.
The engine operated up until 1921 when all the payable coal had been extracted from the western portions of the mine, and the engine house was then dismantled.
But pictures can be deceptive, for this is no ordinary bushland setting, but an industrial scene. That’s not a picnic shelter in the background of the photograph on the page opposite, but an engine house of the Lambton colliery, with a boiler and steam driven winding engine used to pull steel cables that went down a shaft into the mine to haul coal skips from distant parts of the underground workings.
The engine was first erected in 1878 under the supervision of Thomas Croudace, the manager of Lambton colliery. In 1904, a fire in the middle of the night destroyed the engine and it had to be replaced.
Paddy Lewis dam is still there today, nestled in a gully in the bushland below John Hunter Hospital, but now overgrown with reeds and vegetation. Nothing remains of the engine house apart from a few fragments of brick foundations, this industrial scene having now returned to an ordinary bushland setting. Our pet’s teeth, just like our own, require regular care and attention. Poor dental health will lead to periodontal disease which can be associated with other serious diseases such as heart and kidney failure. There are some easy steps you can take to ensure your pet’s teeth and gums remain healthy. Over 85% of dogs over the age of four years suffer from periodontal disease. Periodontal disease begins with a build up of plaque. Plaque is made up of food, saliva plus bacteria; which if not removed will calcify onto the teeth and form tartar. One of the main signs that you may notice first, is your pet has bad breath. This is only one of the signs that might suggest your pet is suffering from periodontal disease. Other signs include discoloured or loose teeth, swollen red gums and reluctance to eat or chew. If your pet displays any of these symptoms it is important to have their teeth checked by a vet. Regular vet checks will enable detection of periodontal disease. Your vet will discuss the best management and care plan for your pet. Generally premium food, specifically dental diets can significantly reduce the development of tartar. Specialised dental treats can also be helpful. For those who will not lose a finger; brushing the teeth with a specially designed toothbrush and tooth paste is also beneficial. Finally, we may suggest a fresh breath scale and polish. This is necessary to remove tartar and will make home care much easier and more effective. Overall good dental health is important for the longterm health of our pets. General care at home will help to reduce the development of tartar. Please contact us for a dental check or if you have concerns for your pet’s teeth.

Life is so much better when you overcome alcohol addiction. You will live a more enriched life and become the real you.
Cravings are when your body starts to demand that you give it some more. This is now a master/ slave relationship and it always leads to a greatly impoverished life. You will know that you are addicted to alcohol if you: • • • • • • • • •

A lot people work in an office environment and struggle with the unhealthy side effects it has on their bodies. We all know sitting for long periods of time can cause neck, shoulder and back pain but it can also cause more serious problems like organ damage and muscle degeneration. The good news is that in this technological world there are things we can do to combat the health problems sitting for long periods can cause; • Set up your area properly If you are able to set up your own work area there are a few tricks and tips to make it a healthier environment. Check the height of your computer monitor. The top of the screen should be level with your eyes. To improve posture, use a Swiss ball as a chair. Place important items further away so you have to stand up and walk a couple of steps to get them. • Use a pedometer By tracking how many steps you can see if you are close to the recommended 10,000 steps each day. To help keep you motivated get other people in your office to track their steps as well and see if you can beat each other. • Get away from your desk Set a timer for every hour and when it goes off take a quick walk around the office. Better yet if it possible get outside and get some fresh air. • Exercise before or after work (or in your lunch break if you need to) Our bodies are meant to move. Any sort of exercise will help counteract the bad side effects of sitting all day. Get moving and your body will thank you for it.
