Get hands dirty for park improvement

Local sports facilities, including the pavillions at Harry Edwards Field in Lambton Park and Ford Oval and Arthur Edden Field in New Lambton will benefit from improvements undertaken as part of the CityServe volunteering initiative during October.

Launched in 2012, CityServe is focused on bringing churches together to serve the local community. Rick Prosser, CityServe chairman and project coordinator for Newcastle area, said “CityServe is about people getting their hands dirty for the sake of others, the Church in action across Newcastle.”

Most of the projects earmarked for CityServe’s attention this year are public facilities within parkland areas, such as pavilions, shelters and toilet blocks.

In announcing the 2014 projects at a special breakfast at Wests New Lambton recently, Newcastle Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy said “Last year there was a clear need for upgrades to the city’s surf clubs. The results were remarkable and the community support was tremendous.”

“Now, we want to take that same community spirit and unleash it across the city’s parklands.” Clr McCloy said.

Storytime@ Lambton Library

Storytime is designed to introduce the magic of books to children under five years of age. Small numbers of children enjoy being read to in a casual informal atmosphere.

The next Storytime event at Lambton will be held on Tuesday 1 July from 10.30 to 11.10am.

This event is free of charge but bookings are essential on 4904 3330.

‘Place Making’ meeting planned

It’s hard to argue with Nicola Hirschhorn when she says that residents of Lambton area are relatively lucky with the facilities and amenities our suburbs offers.

That said, long-time North Lambton resident, Nicola believes it could be made even better through ‘Place Making’ grants.

The ‘Make Your Place Community Grant Program’, run by Newcastle City Council, provides grants of up $2000 for small projects that provide physical improvements to a public area.

The improvements could for example benefit existing users of a public space or increase community use of the space through improved appearance or comfort.

One requirement for a successful ‘Place Making’ grant is that the application is from a group in the community, willing to volunteer their time and skills, rather than an individual.

Nicola is calling residents with ideas on how Lambton’s parks, streets and public spaces might be improved by small projects to attend a short meeting to brainstorm and plan for the next round of grants which closes mid August.

The meeting is being held at Lambton Bowling Club on Tuesday 8 July commencing at 5.30pm.

Depending on the turnout, Nicola hopes the first meeting to run to no later than 7pm.

“It would be great to see a cross-

section of the neighbourhood from right across Lambton come along to the meeting to share their ideas and help form a new community group.” Nicola said.

“Who knows? With a ‘Place Making’ grant under our belt this group could become an active voice representing local residents over the longer term.” She added.

Water for a growing metropolis In the late 1800’s Newcastle was booming thanks to coal mining, copper smelting and soap production. This growing 19th century ‘metropolis’ needed a steady and reliable water supply.

The Walka Water Scheme brought the first reticulated water to the Hunter and saw several reservoirs built throughout the region.

The photo top right was taken in 1885 during the construction of the Lambton #1 Reservoir, which sits today on the grassed median strip on Newcastle Road approaching Lambton from Jesmond.

This particular photo appears to look out towards Wallsend, with little more than green paddocks and the odd home between coal mining townships.

How and Why?

Sharon Waterhouse is one of three Councillors representing Ward 3 on Newcastle City Council, which includes the Lambton area. Lambton Local met with Sharon at the corner of Howe and Wye Streets recently and put the following questions to her..............

When do you anticipate that the City of Newcastle will be able to balance the books again? Tough decisions have already been made to help bring our budget back into surplus and make sure the organisation can deliver services to the community well into the future. We need to continue a strong focus on managing this. The goal is to get to a modest surplus in the next few years while delivering on service commitments and key community priorities. The Delivery Plan includes projects such as revitalising Hunter Street, Bathers Way coastal improvements, provision of new cycleways and upgrades to Blackbutt Reserve.

How do you see your career in politics unfolding in coming years? My career focus is to lead my team as CEO of Phoenix Health Fund. I will continue to be actively involved in supporting the development of the city through my work on Council and with Hunter Business Women’s Network.

Who inspired you to go into politics? My family’s strong commitment to community service inspired me. When my grandfather returned from the war he volunteered with the SES, which he continued to do all his working life. My grandmother was also a volunteer, helping the Royal Blind Society for over 20 years. I admire and respect the many people in our community who volunteer to support our city.

Why did you choose to enter local government politics over the other tiers of government? My grandfather and both my parents worked in local government. Through their work I learnt the value of the diverse range of services and support provided to the community.

What do you think the lasting legacy of this Councils’ terms will be? What do you think the people of Newcastle can expect from its Council between now and the next local government elections in 2016? I hope we have helped to ensure a sustainable economic future for the city and developed a strong leadership team who are decisive and accountable to deliver services to the community.

Dear Lambton Local...

Pop-up Op Shop goes Rotary Club thanks off with a bang

The Anglican Church, St John the Baptist, has been a part of the Lambton community for over 100 years. As a community of faith we have been thinking of ways in which we could be more visible in our local community.

Over the years, with buildings and houses surrounding the church grounds we realised that many people may not know that we are even here in the community.

When I saw the vacant shop in Elder Street recently I had a vision of what we could do!

A Pop Up Op Shop!!! As the shop will eventually be rented it was timely to get in and hopefully be able to use the shop. Craig Simpson of Simpsons Shoes, owner of the shop, was just amazing…and we were able to use the shop for a Friday and Saturday.

We received lots of help from our local community and are so grateful to those in the street that helped us out.

We set up on the Thursday and opened on Friday. It was truly amazing. I don`t think there was a time in the day when someone wasn`t in the Op Shop, either looking or just catching up with old friends and neighbours.

Lots of people helped with the selling and we tried to use the shop in a way which would enhance Elder Street, and not detract from the businesses around us.

We are part of Lambton, and most of our community of faith live in Lambton. I felt therefore it was a win-win situation. The money we raise will go back into the ministry of our local church where lots of things that we do are for our local community.

We would love to do something similar again and are looking forward to finding further ways to help our locals.

The Rotary Club of Wallsend-Maryland gives a huge ‘Thumbs Up’ to all the fabulous businesses on Elder Street who generously donated products and vouchers to a recent trivia night fund-raiser.

The night was a great success, raising over $11,000 to fund a dual-scalp cooling machine that prevents hair-loss during chemotherapy, plus a special shower-chair for Wheeling & Able’s holiday cottage for children with significant disability and their families.

Life has always revolved around park for Jack Life-long Lambton resident Jack Preston of Lloyd Road recently shared just a few of his many memories of local life over the years with Lambton Local.

During the Depression years of the early 1930’s Jack and his mates would catch sparrows in mouse or bird traps. On a good hunt they could catch up to thirty birds. They would take them home to Jack’s mother who would pluck them, boil them then make a soup. “It was pretty good eating too” recalls Jack.

Jack remembers when he was about ten years of age watching herds of cattle being driven through the streets of Lambton en route to the abattoirs.

Times were tough during Jack’s early years and most local families

grew their own vegetables to help the household budget. “Manure was like gold, and almost as hard to get” Jack remembered. He recalls being sent with a wheelbarrow, torch and shovel to Lambton Park after dark to wait for horses kept there to do their business. After scooping up a load he would head home ready for his parents to apply to the vegetable patch.

Life always revolved around the park. Jack especially remembers ‘The Frolic in the Park’ when he and his sister Gladys won first prize in the fancy dress competition Jack aged 2, with his older sister dressed in their Arnott’s Biscuits Gladys when they won the fancy dress costumes. compettion in 1928. Time to find capsule

Now...where was it buried?

Despite being between 6 and 8 years of age at the time, Garry ‘Hook’ Callaghan, Barry Blackwell and other former pupils of New Lambton Public School remember it well. The occasion was a ceremony in 1962 to bury a time capsule in the school grounds.

No doubt containing specially selected documents and objects from the early 1960’s period, the capsule was to be opened in fifty years time, in 2012.

But unfotunately no one recalls precisely where it was buried and the capsule’s whereabouts and its contents remain a mystery. No doubt the location was marked on the day but the ravages of time have erased all evidence.

Last month’s winner was Steve Hall who told us that it is Hunter Water’s high level water tank in Summit Street North Lambton, pictured below.

Built in 1952, this small reservoir is used to address water pressure issues for residents in elevated areas.

According to Steve, high level tanks usually have 4 legs but this one has 5 legs. Early in his career at Hunter Water Steve noticed this and asked a design engineer why this was so.

The engineer’s simple reply was “I was sick of designing four- legged tanks so I gave this one five legs”.

The Club holds a monthly meeting on the 4th Friday of each month at Wests New Lambton.

The meeting starts with an entertaining guest speaker, then a break for morning tea and a chat.

A short business meeting then follows during which an outline of the various activities planned for the next month or two is given. The majority of members then lunch

together at the Wests bistro downstairs.

Activities throughout the year include a monthly birthday luncheon at different local restaurants, a monthly day trip to nearby destinations which may include fashion, jewellery and accessory outlets as well as scenic and luncheon spots, theatre outings both locally and by coach to Sydney.

There are also a number of specific interest groups such as the walking group that meets twice monthly at some of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie’s designated

walking tracks, as well as a monthly craft group and a Saturday afternoon Canasta group.

An annual fee to cover meeting and membership costs is paid by members. The costs for all other events and excursions vary depending on the nature of the activity, and are at the individual members’ cost.

The Ladies’ Probus Club of New Lambton always welcomes new members.

Lumps and Bumps: Terrifying or Trivial?

Many different conditions can cause lumps including; bruises, abscesses, skin disease, and of course, cancers.

All lumps should be checked by a vet as it is usually impossible to tell at home whether they are dangerous or inconsequential.

After examination, a vet will often use a small needle to take a sample from the lump to interpret under a microscope. Sometimes a surgical biopsy will also be recommended. Once the diagnosis is determined, an informed choice can be made as to the best treatment.

Benign tumours may grow bigger, but do not spread elsewhere in the body. Malignant tumours will spread, and usually should be surgically removed as soon as possible. Often tests such as x-rays and ultrasound will be used to check for spread prior to removal.

All new lumps should be checked out properly, and existing lumps monitored, even if the pet has had them for years. Any changes noted should be reported to your vet – even benign growths can become inflamed, infected, or change character! Quilters celebrating a pearler of an anniversary Novocastrian Quilters Inc. will hold an exhibition in October to celebrate their 30th Anniversary.

Members are enthusiastically completing their “Pearl Challenge” quilts in readiness for the display when many other favourite works by past and present members will also be displayed. Quilts will be entered into various categories and sponsors for these categories will award prizes. This year there are two categories for younger sewers in the community, up to 12 years and 13-18 years. Entries can include anything from a small item to a quilt.

The quilt to be raffled in support of Calvary Mater Hospital Auxilliary to commemorate Novocastrian Quilters 30th anniversary

The quilt will be displayed over the next few months at a number of craft and quilt shops in the region and it will also be displayed at the Exhibition from 10-12 October at the PCYC, at Young Road, Broadmeadow.

It is sure to be a wonderful display of artistic works and everyone is invited to attend. Members are also busy at present making many handcraft items for the stall at the Exhibition and feel sure that visitors will be excited to purchase that unique gift they have always been looking for.
