2014 National Premier League Champions the Lambton Jaffas will face the biggest challenge in the Club’s proud history when they take on the might of Japan’s national side on January 5. In a battle of David and Goliath proportions, Lambton’s own Jaffas will face the defending champions of the AFC Asian Cup in a closed trial at Cessnock Sportsground. Ranked 2nd among the Asian nations, the Samurai Blue, as they are known to their fans, are the most successful side in Asian Cup history, having won the event four times since 1992. Japan will call Cessnock home for their Asian Cup campaign. They will play at least once at Hunter Stadium in a pool match against Palestine. (Continued page 3)

Local barber Jason Smith braved the icy water and got dunked raising money for the 2015 Variety Bash
Bar 121 held its annual giant raffle prior to Christmas. A large crowd was on hand to see the local butcher, publican, barber and others get dunked for charity. Just over $2000 was raised on the night for Variety, the children’s charity. Brett McGovern of Bar 121 thanked everyone for attending and local businesses especially for their generosity in donating raffle prizes.

Did you know that West Leagues Netball Club started as Lambton Junior Basketball Club in 1964 with just five teams? By 1970 this had increased to 50 teams, which was an extraordinary increase in short period of time. A special meeting held in 1968 supported the decision for West Leagues Club to be sponsors and so the Lambton Junior Basketball Club became known as the West Leagues Basketball Club. The club colours, which were originally royal blue and pale blue, changed to red and green which are the colours to this day. In 1970 the game of women’s basketball had a name change to netball, hence the club name as it is today. Is the Club still successful today? It certainly is, with around 60 teams registered each year with ages ranging from 5 years to (almost) 50. Registration days for the 2015 season are being held on Wednesday 28th January from 4 to 8pm and Saturday 31st January from 9am to 1pm. Watering wisely this summer
With the hotter days of summer upon us it’s important to use water wisely around the home. Water Wise Rules came into effect in July last year as part of the NSW Government’s Lower Hunter Water Plan, which looks to secure the water supply for 20 years. Essentially the three Water Wise Rules are: • All hoses must have a trigger nozzle attached • No watering of lawns or gardens between 10am and 4pm • No hosing hard surfaces like paths or driveways. Although breaking the rules can lead to fines up to $220, Hunter Water’s Nick Kaiser who is also a Lambton resident said the aim was to educate, not punish residents. “Water Wise Rules are really commonsense water behaviours that Hunter Water is taking a commonsence approach to enforcing. “Hunter Water will look to issue reminder notices to customers who have been observed not abiding the rules and will only ever fine repeat and habitual offenders,” Nick said.
But what about the Bowling Club or Council gardeners you might ask. “There are a number of exemptions to Water Wise Rules, including specific exceptions for businesses and organisations who rely on needing to water at all times of the day.

Home maintenance Brushing your pet in between grooming appointments helps to keep their coat clean, removing dead hair, dirt

Regular grooming also helps to create a bond between you and your pet and accustoms them to being handled. How often should my pet be groomed? While a puppy or a kitten’s coat is generally softer, fluffier and shorter, it’s still important that they get used to being groomed to ensure the process becomes more familiar and easier in the future. We recommend that they visit a groomer for a ‘meet, greet and a treat’ once they are fully covered by vaccinations (C5 vaccination for puppies and F3 vaccination for kittens), this can make the next trip less overwhelming with the new surroundings. Depending on how long your pet’s hair is, they may require weekly, fortnightly or monthly grooming. If your pet has a skin condition, your vet may recommend more frequent washing with a special medicated shampoo. A happy new year full of hope Plan your meals

This time of year is full of so much hope for the future year ahead. We have just celebrated Christmas with our loved ones, we have said goodbye to 2014 and are now making resolutions and plans for the new year. Hands up if you’ve created the resolution of weight loss. Every year many people make this resolution but by the end of the year very few have fulfilled it. Make sure you are one of those few who are successful.
Sit down on shopping day and plan what you will be eating for the week. This will mean you don’t have to think about what to eat when you’re hungry since you have planned the meal and have all the ingredients on hand. Eat 5 veggies a day Vegetables are full of vitamins and minerals that help your body to function but most people do not eat enough of these foods. Vegetables help prevent a range of diseases including cancers, diabetes, heart disease, stroke etc. Get started with these healthy habits and you will off to a great start for 2015. Weight loss is all about creating healthy habits so I thought I would give you a few habits to get your new year off to a great start. Drink 2 litres of water a day Most people do not drink enough water. A lot of times when we think we are hungry we are actually thirsty. If you are hungry drink a glass of water and wait 15 minutes. If you are still hungry after 15 minutes you know it is true hunger. Eat a healthy breakfast everyday What you eat for breakfast sets you up for the whole day. Skip this meal and you will be starving by morning tea and that’s when your cravings become impossible to control. Incorporate 30 minutes of exercise into your day Not only does exercise help you physically it can also help you mentally as well. Each day you should be doing 30 minutes of exercise with one day a week off. This can be as simple as taking a walk to a full-on training session. A body in motion stays in motion so let’s get moving!

Happy New Year to all Lambton Local readers from Newcastle Psychology & Health (NPH). Six years ago, I moved my Practice to Lambton, rebadged it with a name change and set about developing a first class service to the community. I have not looked back. We have turned a tired old interior into something quite wonderful: relaxing and meditative, welcoming, personal and very private. NPH sees a wide variety of presentations. I see all manner of issues including uni-polar and bi-polar depression, relationship difficulties, addictions, anxiety disorders, workplace issues, anger and grief issues, sexuality issues including orientation and dysfunction, as well as the myriad life-challenge issues that we all experience occasionally. I also love to help people with smoking cessation and weight loss and other similar life goals.
As I do not believe in a one size fits all approach to counselling, I have trained extensively in several modalities including hypnotherapy which can be very useful when people want to undertake some kind of life change. 2014 saw us launch a dedicated Anxiety Clinic at NPH. Around 1 in 4 Australians will struggle with some level of anxiety and around 7% have a diagnosable disorder. We all feel anxious occasionally, but some people live an impoverished life because they cannot do the things they want to or need to. As we say here, “Anxiety is a thief. Don’t let it steal your life”. NPH has an excellent website which is very informative and helpful. You can even ‘Like’ us on Facebook. I’ll be writing a short piece in the Lambton Local each month about a mental health issue that I hope you’ll find interesting and helpful. Best wishes Stuart
