Turn around is right decision
Above: Morehead Street residents, Steve and Tina Hopes, were more than pleased to hear that Roads and Maritime Services has heeded community concerns regarding the extra traffic and pedestrian safety issues that allowing a right turn from Newcastle Road would have created.
Earlier this year when Roads & Maritime Services (RMS) advertised proposed changes to traffic flow on Newcastle Road at Lambton, local residents Tina and Steve Hopes were quick to act. As residents of Morehead Street they could see that the proposed right hand turn for eastbound traffic off Newcastle Road would lead to a big increase in traffic on Morehead Street which would then flow to other local streets including the busy pedestrian areas around Elder Street. “We attended the public consultation session that RMS held at the school in May and expressed our concerns. We weren’t alone either. Other residents we’ve spoken to agreed that Morehead Street was just not able to handle an increase in traffic like this, especially given there’s a stop sign at the bottom of the hill at the intersection of Morehead and Elder Streets” Mr Hopes said. In a recent community update letterboxed to local residents, RMS advised that the proposed right hand turns into Morehead Street from Newcastle Road in both directions would not proceed. The only improvements to proceed at Morehead Street now will be the construction of two further pedestrian crossings so the intersection will have four-way pedestrian crossings. (cont’d p2)
