the last time and farewelled his ‘other’ home. Lambton Local caught up with Barry on his last day and asked him about his fifty years as a local firefighter. “When I joined in 1965 it was a voluntary role. Later on we became retained firefighters. Your local firefighters still juggle their ‘day’ jobs with the station roster. It’s a big commitment and I commend crew members I have worked with over the years.” Barry said. “I want to thank my wife Lesley and the kids for everything they’ve suffered over fifty years. I must have been called out at every possible hour of every day of the year. I’ve even missed a few Christmas dinners, but that’s the job. “I’d also like to thank the local community for their support, especially the station’s closest neighbours in De Vitre Street. They’ve put up with fire alarms, reversing trucks and water pumps at all hours!” (continued on page 2)

(from page 1) When asked about his most memorable time as a firefighter Barry said it would have to be the Newcastle Earthquake in 1989. “We were non-stop for 14 hours on the day of the quake, followed by two more solid days of work. There were local call outs around Womboin Rd area I remember. Lambton Brigade also worked at Broadmeadow and the site of the Workers Club collapse.” Barry recalled. Despite retiring Barry doubts he’ll be putting his feet up anytime soon. “When your ‘To Do’ list has been growing for 50 years there’s plenty to do around the house!” The Lambton community thanks you Barry, and wishes you good health and good fortune in your retirement.
The next dig thing
Following on from their successful community garden morning in April, the Lambton Residents Group are at it again. The next gardening event will be held on Sunday 30th August from 10.30am to 1.30pm. The group will be tending again to the garden beds behind the War Memorial gates on Morehead Street as well as planting out a garden bed adjacent to the public toilet block. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. After the work is done there will be a free sausage sizzle. Local’s ANZAC tribute named in Parliament Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery recently brought a Notice of Motion to the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of NSW to recognise Lambton Local generally and April’s ANZAC edition in particular. “I hold an Honours degree in history and I’m fascinated by the every day stories of sacrifice, love and hardship that defined the lives of our forebears - in publishing a special edition of Lambton Local dedicated to the ANZACs who hailed from Lambton, this publication’s editor, Mark Brooker, did the local community a great service. I was proud to applaud him and his publication in the Notice of Motion.” Ms Hornery said. There are a number of ways to celebrate successes in the Parliament. Community Recognition Statements are short speeches given by MPs that can recognise a significant achievement by a constituent, and Notices of Motion are another way of pointing out an issue or event for recognition. A team of local runners are taking on the world’s largest foot race, Sydney’s iconic City2Surf in support of the Black Dog Institute. The Black Dog Institute is a world-leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression and other mental illness. The team has pledged to raise a minimum of $6000 for the cause as their fee for a Gold Charity team entry. At the end of July the team were half way to their goal with two weeks remaining before the City2Surf. With the support of local hotels the team has run a number of meat tray raffles. Another huge raffle with over $2500 in prizes including a Samsung 32” LED TV and a waterfront weekend away will be drawn at the Barefoot Bowls and Family Fun Day at Lambton Bowling Club on Sunday 2nd August from 12 noon. Stolen seat sentimental
On Saturday Morning 18th July, I woke to find that my White Wrought Iron Seat had been stolen from our front door in Young Road. The thieves entered onto our property, walking up our drive way and 50cm away from our front door, stole a very sentimental seat that my elderly dad had restored for me. 13 years ago I was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. My chances of survival were very, very slim. I was given a year after undergoing chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. On the second anniversary of my transplant my dad gave me with a white wrought iron seat he sandblasted and restored, to celebrate my survival. The seat is quite unique as the timber doesn’t contour to the seat line. There is no financial value to it, it is far more that of a sentimental value. I am disappointed, angry and sad that people feel that they could enter onto private property and invade someone’s space and steal something that they probably thought was a fun idea. The incident has been reported to the police. If anyone comes across it could they please contact Lambton Local on 0455 210 000.

School’s 150th in September The 150th Anniversary of Lambton Public School is only a few weeks away, and tickets to the big Reunion Evening on Friday 11th September at Wests New Lambton are selling well at 2Blend in Elder Street and at the school. Organising Committee member Robert Watson has been contacting former pupils and teachers for a few years now, and is pleased to report that even more former pupils have been located through Lambton Local. According to Robert’s research 40% of expupils still live within 5km of the school! The oldest teacher contacted to date is Mr Geoff Borham, who is 93 years old. The oldest pupil found so far is also 93. Both are being featured in a souvenir book being compiled for the sesquicentenary. Do you know of former students or teachers who are older than that? If so, please call Lambton Public School on 4957 1667 and let them know. On the morning of Friday 11th September the school’s 380 students plus staff, along with past students, teachers and local families will march from Lambton Park to the school via Elder and Croudace Street. This will be followed by Official Anniversary Assembly. More details on all the 150th anniversary events will be published in the September issue of Lambton Local.

Bad breath: An ugly odour from your pet’s mouth will usually indicate poor dental health. You can help to prevent this by encouraging your pet to chew bones and by regular tooth brushing. Regular dental checks are necessary so that your veterinarian can monitor changes and recommend a dental when it is required. Teeth scaling and polishing is a procedure done under an anaesthetic, which helps minimise further health risks that dental diseases can cause. Arthritis: All pets will develop a degree of arthritic change as the years go by, particularly in large breeds and overweight animals and where the pet has suffered injuries in the past. The basic needs for an older pet’s musculo-skeletal system are: provide the warmest, softest bedding, particularly in winter (mattress, trampoline beds, and blankets); keep your pet’s weight stable or start weight reduction if overweight; keep up your pet’s exercise regime without being excessive. If these measures are being taken and discomfort persists, then discuss with your vet the best course of action to make your older pet more comfortable. Lumps and bumps: As the years go by your pet may develop lumps which should be checked. Many are harmless and can be expected with advancing age. Causes for concern are lumps growing or changing shape rapidly, chewing or scratching at a lump or being aware of its presence, or if the lump is in a compromising position eg. eye, anus, armpits. In most cases only microscopic examination can reveal the type and nature of your pet’s lumps. Drinking excessively: This is usually associated with increased urination and can be an indicator of many disease conditions, some quite serious. Kidney failure, diabetes and hyperthyroidism are common conditions and often cause weight loss. These problems need early detection and treatment– a urine sample and/or blood tests are essential.

“But I don’t have enough time...” We all know the benefits of a healthier lifestyle, from having more energy to the most important benefit….. preventing life threating illnesses. So why is the last thing on our list to do? And why are some people more successful than others in making time for exercise when we are ALL leading very busy lives. The key is to make your health a priority and to get organised. Exercise: Find 2-3 hours a week you can exercise. This can be spilt up however you need whether you do a full 1 hour session, break it up into ½ hour sessions or even blocks of 10 min bursts during the day. Then book these times in just like you would an appointment or a business meeting. If you can’t find time during your day get up an hour earlier. Get your exercise done before the distractions of the day cause you to make excuses. I will admit the first couple of weeks will be hard but after a while your body clock will adjust. Nutrition: How do we make it less tempting to go and buy those unhealthy takeaway meals? Sit down at the beginning of the week and plan your meals. Not only will you be healthier but it will help you save dollars at the checkout. When you have a little more time on the weekends cook up big batches of healthy meals and freeze them in portion sized containers. Get the kids to help out and not only will they be learning important cooking skills but it is a great bonding time for your family. Make a healthy lifestyle a priority and you will be rewarded with more energy and better productivity to be able tackle the tasks you need to do so you will be able to spend time doing what is most important…… spending time with family and friends and isn’t that what life is all about. The old Post Office on the corner of Dickson and Morehead Streets is arguably the most iconic building in Lambton, with its aesthetic façade visible from almost every vantage point in the suburb. This substantial building was erected over a period of eighteen months and opened in 1884, when Lambton was only 20 years young – a testament to the wealth and importance of the township, and an expression of faith in its future. The building is of the Victorian Italianate architectural style, characterised by having a low pitched roof, crisp decoratively painted cement rendered walls, ornamented arched windows, and a verandah with lacework. Although we think of it as the old “Post Office”, this Ralph Snowball photo reminds us by the sign on the front and the pole to the right, that it is in fact the “Post and Telegraph Office”. Postal services began in Lambton prior to 1871 with the first Postmaster, Page 16 > Lambton Local > August 2015
Daniel Jones, and then the Davies family ran the postal service from their house in Grainger St from 1871 to 1884. The telegraph was first connected to Lambton in 1875, and operated out of a building adjacent to Alderman Maddock’s shop. Postal and telegraphic services were then located together in the new building in 1884. In 1997 the Post Office business moved to the newsagency in Elder Street and the building was sold. The well-maintained building is now home to an insurance broking firm and is sure to be an enduring ornament in the townscape of Lambton. The Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners’ Advocate, in reporting the opening of the Post Office in June 1884 was quite justified in saying: “The building, as a whole, is one of the most handsome and substantial of its class in the Northern district, and, to all appearance, will stand for centuries.”

It is recommended that everyone should have at least two alcohol-free days per week. The Low Risk Level guidelines are: For men — No more than 4 SDs a day on average and no more than 6 SDs on any one day. For women— No more than 2 SDs a day on average and no more than 4 SDs on any one day. If you are a daily drinker, most alcohol and drug clinicians will tell you that if you are imbibing more than 3 SDs a day, you are getting into brain damage and liver damage territory. Alcohol is a serious chemical. We should all treat it carefully.
