Pools go private for profit
With the recent announcement that four Newcastle City Council pools including our own Lambton Memorial Swimming Centre will be managed by a private operator from the commencement of the 2014/15 season, pool users and aquatic sports clubs in particular, are keen to know how this will affect them. According to Newcastle City Council’s Director of Infrastructure, Frank Cordingley total operating costs for all Council-owned pools is currently $3.1 million per annum. Income for the coming year was estimated to have been $1.2 million. The provision of pool services therefore comes at a deficit of $1.9 million annually. It is understood that 8 permanent staff, representing $1.2 million in labour costs, will be affected by the transition to a private operator. (Continued page 2)

Lambton’s favourite summer spot “We met with Council a month or so back where they assured each of the Lambton-based aquatic clubs that we should look at this year as ‘business as usual’.That’s fine, and we have no reason to doubt Council’s word, but still we have planning to do very soon for the coming season.” Mr Gamble said. “By the end of August we would hope to have the full details of club membership costs for the new season worked out. We’ve always kept our club charges to a minimum, and to be honest we’ve had to because we use a facility where paid entry is at an added cost separate to club charges. If single entry and season passes are going to change markedly under the new operators club parents will want to know well before the season starts” Mr Gamble added. “We are also very keen to know whether Lane 4 will be providing swimming training services. This is something we offer our members for a small fee. We know of private operators who’ve taken over public swimming facilities then insisted that all swimming training is carried out be them. That would create a significant financial impact to our membership.” “In a nutshell, I guess, we have plenty of questions but not too many answers at this stage.” He concluded.
Group gets going Lambton’s new residents group, (below) hopes to see new timber seating outside the Library soon Following a successful first meeting in July the new Lambton residents group has wasted no time getting it’s first ‘Place Making’ grant application underway. Nicola Hirschhorn, whose idea the group was, told Lambton Local that some great ideas, big and small, came from the initial meeting. “We decided to ‘cut our teeth’ so to speak on a project from the smaller end of the scale. We have been in contact with Newcastle
City Council regarding having some timber seating installed within Lambton Branch Library’s beautiful formal gardens. A place of passive recreation, where you could come, take a book from the library shelf and enjoy an outdoor read.” Ms Hirschhorn said. “We’ve had some quotes for quality timber furniture and whilst it’s by no means a done deal yet, we’re confident Council will see the community benefit in the idea.” The residents group will be meeting monthly. Anyone with ideas to share on community improvement projects is welcome to attend. Next meeting is 5.30pm Tuesday 12 August at Lambton Bowling Club.

The night the aliens came to

Life-long Lambtonian, Phil Mahoney wrote to Lambton Local after our first issue and mentioned a flying saucer having landed in Lambton Park during the 1950’s. We met with Phil recently in the Park to hear the complete story (and we mean the complete story… Phil has plenty of yarns to tell) and to see where it actually happened all those years ago. Some readers will recall a time when all hotels had a mandatory 6pm closing time. If you were still particularly thirsty at 6 o’clock you might purchase a takeaway nightcap to see you through the evening. This is purportedly what George Bunn was doing the night the aliens landed. He was just settling into the rotunda with a bottle of port wine for company when, he was startled by a big silver thing landing right near him. This sobered him up quite quickly, and he raced to the Police station in Dickson St. to report his sighting. As might be expected, the Constable on duty gave George fairly short shrift and told him to go home and sleep it off.

Lambton in their flying saucer The next morning as the Park gardener started his day’s work he noticed a huge scorched patch about 150 feet in diameter on the grassed area between the rotunda and where the cricket nets now are. Knowing he should report vandalism immediately to the Police, he too went up to Dickson St. Upon hearing of the gardener’s report the Policeman exclaimed that “…was exactly where Georgie Bunn saw the flying saucer last night!” Alhough a youngster at the time, Phil can remember going to the park with his brothers so they could see the evidence for themselves. According to Phil, no grass grew in that area again for at least 18 months. PIX magazine subsequently published a story on George Bunn’s close encounter with aliens. A few years back Phil heard a caller on late night talkback radio declaring that their father was with George Bunn on the night in question and saw the flying saucer too. If any reader can shed light on this revelation please let us know.

Jesmond Park playground overhauled and enlarged If you use Jesmond Park regularly you would have noticed the improvements recently unveiled by Newcastle City Council.
The new playground at Jesmond Park is keeping local kids on the go
The latest stage in a program that has been running for two years to date, is the all-new playground at the eastern or Robinson Ave end of the park. The playground was designed by one of Council’s in-house landscape architects and is significantly larger than the playground it replaced. It features fantastic new, modern equipment for toddlers to 10-year olds. “We have been working on improvements at Jesmond Park for the past two years. In this time we have built a new half basketball court, shade structure, barbeque area and seating followed by this current stage of a complete overhaul of the children’s playground.” said a spokesperson for Council. “Around $250,000, including a $50,000 grant via the NSW Government Community Building Partnership Program, has been invested in making Jesmond Park a great place for families to enjoy and the area has been transformed. The adjacent shared pathway through the park has been upgraded so local families can easily access the playground either on foot or by bike.” The spokesperson added.

Getting to know our politicians
Do you know which electoral area you live in when it comes to State boundaries? See the map below. Put simply, and with a few streets being exceptions, if you live west or north of Lambton Park you are in Wallsend Electorate. If you live east or south of the Park your Electorate is Newcastle.
Last month we met a local Councillor. This month we go State. Member for Wallsend, Sonia Hornery is one of two MPs representing the Lambton area in the NSW Parliament. Lambton Local met with Ms Hornery recently and put the following questions to her.
Who inspired you to go into politics initially? Of today’s politicians at any level of government whom do you find inspiring? I’ve always been interested in social issues. My working class parents had a very sharing philosophy which all my siblings inherited. Having grown up locally [West Wallsend], I have a soft spot for the Hunter. I was working in Kempsey when I learnt of the Greiner Government’s closure of Wallsend Hospital. That was one of the trigger points for me joining the local ALP Kempsey Branch and I became their first female president. I can identify with Barrack Obama and his attempts to raise the profile of marginalised Americans and his attempts to implement a more social health care system. He is persistent, and so am I. Just look at my 631 Notices and 594 questions in Parliament since 2011. What prompted your move from local government to the state parliament arena? I am fortunate to have followed John Mills in the seat of Wallsend. He is a man of integrity. I was a Page 8 > Lambton Local > August 2014
Councillor on Newcastle Council when John was approaching retirement. I nominated in a Rank and File preselection and was fortunate to have been preselected as the ALP candidate. Each sphere of Government is important and integral. State issues- Hospitals, Education and Police are all close to my heart. Our community and union victory to keep the Wallsend Aged Care Facility in public hands demonstrates how we can have an impact at a state government level. Why do you think it is that Lambton is such a great place to live? Lambton is well positioned, pretty and green. It’s a friendly, grass roots community. It feels safe. Lambton is where I like to be and like to go home to, especially after Parliament. Where do you see your career in politics taking you next? I’m grateful for being entrusted with the Shadow Ministry for the Hunter. For me, it’s more of a vocation than a career. My
goal is to try to use my position as Shadow to get a fairer share for the Hunter and represent our views to the Liberal Government. I want to make an impact and hope to continue in future maintaining my presence in Parliament. Ethics are important to me. I must honour my position as an MP. When, if ever do you think governments of all persuasions will give Newcastle a fair go when it comes to allocating resources? It always seems to be about Sydney. The more that Hunter communities are willing to voice our opinion, via letters, submissions and petitions, the more that we are heard. Voter voices are empowering to me and empowering to our community. It’s a co-operative effort beyond party politics. Putting pen to paper should be our creed. My goal is to get the Hunter on the map, we need voices that Sydney can hear, and stop this constant draining of our resources to Sydney.

Local resident Trevor Pearce asked if Lambton Local could shed light on the history of the two storey timber building at the corner of Newcastle Rd and George St. Of course we turned immediately to our trusty copy of “The Story of Lambton - a suburb of Newcastle NSW”. We can confirm your suspicions Trevor when you say it looks
like an old pub, because it was originally the Pine Apple Inn, first licensed in 1874 to Thomas Bunn (perhaps an ancestor of George Bunn of flying saucer fame on pages 5 and 6). In the photo above it is operating as a corner store. The cigarette advertising on the wall suggests it was taken in the 1960’s, 70’s or 80’s, our guess in the latter.

The incidence of obesity and its horrible side effects and poor health outcomes is increasing daily. The personal costs to individuals and their families and financial cost to the wider community continue to climb year by year. We all know what is required in order to lose weight but somehow it is not working. A big contributing factor to this is hate. Instead of seeing how amazing our bodies actually are, we put them down and treat them horribly with lack of exercise and unhealthy food. We compare ourselves with others and concentrate on all the things we personally find wrong with them. We need to come from a place of love. It is important to realise what an amazing machine our body is and treat it with some respect. We hardly ever think about all the complicated processes that it goes through so we can live every day. Coming to a weight loss journey with positive thoughts and the idea that you want to do right by your body is a much better way to start. You will find that this positiveness will help keep you motivated throughout your journey. If you have tried and failed before, forgive yourself first of all. Then try again from a positive frame of mind and see how you go with your weight loss goals. Remember…love life, dream big and become the inspiration. Anne-Marie
80’s pop-rock icons to play at Lambton

It was the untimely death of lead singer Steve Gilpin that forced Mi-Sex, a fantastically successful kiwi band of the 80’s, to go underground. It was the acceptance of Steve Balbi’s suggestion that he could front the band at a private party that confirmed the chemistry then the passion for live performance was ignited at the Christchurch earthquake relief concert. “Compu – PU –pu – PU – pu – PU computer games”. If this chorus is not familiar to you, then you simply weren’t a pop music fan in the early 80’s. This international hit was a defining pop-rock song of the Australian music-scape. It went to #1 on the Australian chart and Top 5 NZ in November ’79. By April ’80 “Computer Games” had charted in more than 20 countries, peaking inside the Top 10 in many. Other hit singles, including “But You Don’t Care”, “Space Race” and “Blue Day” followed throughout the 80’s putting Mi-Sex into the pantheon of classic 80’s bands. Mi-Sex is coming to Lizotte’s Lambton on Friday 22 August and Lambton Local has a double pass valued at $118 to the show to give away. Here’s an idea...
There are about 8,400 people living in Lambton Local’s delivery area. If each of us was to spend just $5 more per week with locally owned and operated businesses instead of the big chain stores or internet-based businesses, we would add more than $2.1 million per annum to our little economy. How many extra local jobs would that support? 30? 50? Who knows? But it would certainly be good for the whole community for that money to be flowing through it week after week.
