LRG gets gardening grant

Lambton Residents Group (LRG) received confirmation recently from City of Newcastle council that its application for a ‘Make Your Place’ grant had been successful. Lambton Residents Group is an informal yet active group of people from all walks of life and from throughout the Lambton area. Group members share ideas and work together to make Lambton an even better place for all to enjoy. The ‘Make Your Place’ Community Grant program provides grants of up to $2000 for place making initiatives for local community projects to achieve safe, vibrant and welcoming places. Tammy Russell, co-ordinator of the working bees held by LRG every few months in Lambton Park, said “The group was really pleased to have been successful (with the grant). The idea of the

Lambton Residents Group members (L to R) Don, Matthew and Ian looking busy at a recent Lambton Park gardens working bee grant is that we can purchase gardening equipment like wheel barrows, rakes, shovels and forks which are dedicated to the gardening bees rather than volunteers having to bring their own tools.”

“Our thanks go to the ‘Make Your Place’ Panel for their support of our idea” Tammy added. For more information regarding Lambton Residents Group email lambtonresidents@gmail.com or phone 0402 949 854.

Literature on library lawn With the gardens behind our Lambton Library now sporting three beautiful handcrafted benches Nicola Hirschhorn from Lambton Residents Group had the idea of holding regular reading afternoons. “I saw the new benches and thought they needed to be used. These gardens have always been tended so well by Council staff but very few people venture in to enjoy them.” Nicola said. Anyone who loves a story is invited to join Nicola and others on the lawn at Lambton Library, every (dry) Thursday from 3.304.30 pm, and enjoy listening to someone read to them. There is no cost. All ages are welcome. Bring a picnic rug and snacks. Then sit back, relax and listen.

Just some of literature lovers who were at the first ‘Reading on the Lawn’ afternoon in late July The first book to be read is the Australian classic, loved by all ages, The Magic Pudding: Being The Adventures of Bunyip Bluegum and his friends Bill Barnacle and

Sam Sawnoff, written by Norman Lindsay. For more information call Nicola on 0402 949 854 or email lambtonresdients@gmail.com

‘Love, Love, Love’ follows journey Newcastle Theatre Company’s 2016 season continues in August with a play that tracks the lives the post World War II ‘Baby Boomer’ generation. Love, Love, Love follows the baby boomers from the summer of love to our more recent anxious debtworried days. Kenneth and Sandra fall in love in the heady carefree sixties and begin their adventures with utopian dreams about changing the world. The play evokes the halcyon days of student privilege: free education, free love, rock and roll, smoking pot, drinking, and sit-ins. It charts their lives and dreams over forty years and onto their retirement and explores the compromises made by jobs, marriage, mortgages and children. And the children of the revolution now have to pay for everything. As time passes, Sandra and Kenneth discover that they need a whole lot more than just love! Playright Mike Bartlett shows the audience the comedy when the big dreams curdle and how the

Dear Lambton Local... I was recently looking through past copies of the Lambton Local, and would like to say how much I enjoy reading the magazine and learning about current happenings and news from the past. I also find the advice and hints from regular contributors, especially wise words from Dr Stuart Edser (Mind Matters) and information on legal matters from Chris Hill-Smith (Appleton Law), to be particularly informative. Seasonal advice from our local pharmacist (Danielle) is also varied and useful, and it is great to be reminded of healthy exercise and lifestyle habits from personal trainer, Anne-Marie Adams. These are just some of the things I love about the Lambton Local, and thank you Mark for such a great publication. Louise Evans - Condor Circuit Lambton Letters to the Editor are always welcome (especially those as nice as the one above!) Please send them to lambtonlocal@gmail.com or PO Box 130 Lambton, 2299

Adding to the science on foot circulation

Peta Tehan from Lambton Foot Clinic recently submitted her PhD thesis

Local podiatrist Peta Tehan from Lambton Foot Clinic recently submitted her PhD which examined identifying circulation problems in people’s feet. “My PhD journey was not a typical one. When I started 5 years ago, my son was just 2 years old and half way through we welcomed our daughter into our family. I certainly wouldn’t recommend having a family in the middle of a PhD, but it certainly was a motivation for me to complete in a timely fashion.” Peta told Lambton Local. “Most PhD students finish their bachelor degree and go straight into a PhD. My journey also differed in that sense as I had a range of clinical experience before embarking into further study. What made me want to complete a PhD was that I was seeing lots of people in my clinic with circulation problems, and I was finding it very difficult to diagnose, and often it was missed.” “Frequently people do not have symptoms and the ramifications can be very serious, with some people losing their legs to circulation problems.” “When I looked at the scientific literature there was not much that I could use to guide me in clinical practice. “The results of my study showed that in people with Diabetes, our little hand held Dopplers do a good job at detecting circulation problems, however this test can be unreliable, so combining that with a toe blood pressure was a good way to diagnose circulation problems.” Peta added.

It’s time for your annual diabetes foot check! • We use the latest technology to detect any problems early, so that they can be prevented. • Thorough and professional assessment by our experienced podiatrists. • Feet with diabetes need a checkup at least once a year to keep them on track.

Eclectic homewares in Elder St

When Kim Pigott of Lambton saw an opportunity to set up her own retail business in Elder Street recently she jumped at it. And ‘Sobelle Living’ was born. The name comes from “So beautiful” (the french: Belle) as well as combination of Kim’s daughters’ names, Sophie and Isabel. “I’d had a secret ambition for a number of years to create something a little different in retail offerings. I wanted to showcase quality homewares and gifts at affordable prices” Kim told Lambton Local. “I just love Elder Street, the friendliness of the local people.“ Kim added. “Wherever possible I’ve sourced my stock from local artists and designers. I think it’s important to support locals when you can.” “ It’s really an eclectic mix. We’ve got homewares, gifts, kids toys and kids clothes. There’s jewellery as well as some women’s fashion. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays we even have fresh cut flowers in stock.” said Kim. Sobelle Living is open Monday to Saturday. You can find the store at 96c Elder Street, next door to Marlin’s Takeaway.

New hearing clinic transforms lives Hearing is considered by many to be our most vital sense enabling us to process everyday sounds so we can communicate clearly and interact safely in our daily environment – after all, we depend on our hearing 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Yet every day thousands of Australians with hearing loss, struggle through conversations instead of enjoying the rich sounds that life has to offer. Local Audiologist Katrina Skirka from ihear, works to transform lives by providing better hearing for the New Lambton community. “We provide services to look after the hearing needs of a wide range of locals including pension and DVA card holders, retirees, workers and children, making better hearing more convenient and accessible than ever” says Katrina. Hearing loss is far more prevalent in the community than most people realise, with recent studies showing with 1 in 6 Australian’s have a treatable hearing loss, but what may surprise many is that nearly 50% of these are under retirement age. “As the world gets louder, the age of those with hearing loss gets younger. The effect of noise

exposure means we are increasingly seeing people in their 40’s and 50’s coming to us with a hearing problem” Katrina added. In support of Hearing Awareness Week, ihear are offering free hearing checks during August. ihear can be found at 14 Cromwell Street, New Lambton.

Lambton then, Lambton now The Omnibus

Today we think nothing of hopping into a car for a quick trip into Newcastle CBD, but in 19th century Lambton transport to the city was problematic. In some mining communities such as Wallsend and Waratah, passenger train services were run on the colliery railways, and although Lambton residents agitated for it as early as 1874, no regular passenger service ever ran on the Lambton colliery line. The only option for passenger transport was the horse drawn omnibus. By 1875 there were at least two buses running between Lambton and Waratah, connecting with the Waratah train. These horse drawn buses were notoriously uncomfortable, described at the time as “rickety rattletraps”. They were also unreliable and dangerous, with reports of accidents causing injury and even death all too common. In 1887 an alternative to the horse drawn buses arrived with the opening of the tram line, but in 1922 in response to the government’s failure to run more frequent trams, Lambton council retaliated by granting a licence for a motorised omnibus to run

by Lachlan Wetherall

between Lambton and Newcastle. Soon there began a period of fierce competition between rival motor buses, with a seemingly inordinate amount of time taken up in Lambton council meetings dealing with licence applications, disputes, and complaints about motor buses. One of the local bus operators was Patrick Brothers, who from 1923 ran the ‘Rawhiti’ between Lambton and Newcastle. The 19.6 horsepower ‘Rawhiti’ was licenced to carry 30 passengers and had eight return services each day. However competition in the fledgling motor bus industry proved too much for the ‘Rawhiti’, for in early 1926 it was advertised at a mortgage sale for £60. In the 1930s the State government took a more active role in coordinating and operating bus services, and eventually the government run services took over from the private bus operators. Winter is upon us by Anne-Marie Adams, owner/personal trainer at Inspirational Group & Fitness Training Ever felt confused about what a healthy diet is? The problem is that there is so much information out there and it is so overwhelming a lot of people don’t even know where to start. Is this shake diet going to be good for me? Do I need to cut out carbs or what about gluten? What about low fat foods, are they full of sugar? It is great people are asking these questions since it means people want to lead healthier lives but so many people don’t get the basics right. Here are four things you can do each week over the next month to get you started towards a healthier diet. Week 1 Drink 2L of water a day Water effects every single cell in your body. Our body also uses protein for many vital processes as well as making us fuller for longer. Week 3 Look at your portion sizes Cut back your portion sizes by a quarter. Then eat slowly and start listening to your body when it is full. If you really aren’t full at the end of your meal eat some extra vegetables to fill you up. Week 4 Start reading labels. Dental care at home

In last month’s issue we discussed dental disease and the impact it can have on your pet’s health. This month we will discuss ways in which you can help maintain an excellent oral hygiene status for your furry friend. The number one practice that will help keep teeth clean is brushing. This involves a pet toothbrush or a soft children’s brush and some pet-specific toothpaste. The toothpaste is important as it does not contain fluoride and is flavoured to facilitate the cleaning process. Our staff are more than happy to give you a demonstration to help get you started! We also understand that not all animals are good candidates for brushing, especially cats. So what products are available for dental care? Dental diets: We stock prescription diets that are clinically proven to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup in both dogs and cats. Dental treats: treats such as Greenie’s are specifically designed as a daily treat to help keep teeth clean. These come in different sizes for small and large dogs plus a cat variety. There are also numerous water additives and supplements available to assist in reducing tartar build up. Even with regular brushing and proper diet, some pets will still require a regular scale and polish at the vet. This can be due to them not allowing brushing, unwilling to eat dental diet/ treats, improper dental conformation and some animals preferentially chew on one side of their mouth. A dental scale and polish can do wonders for your pets’ oral hygiene, the same as when we go to the dentist! Cleaning may be required to help correct severe dental disease before brushing and dental diets are instituted and regular cleans can help prevent the requirement for severe dental work such as extractions. If you have any questions regarding dental work, brushing or any of the products mentioned above please do not hesitate to contact us. Don’t forget that during August you can bring your pet in for a FREE dental check. Page 22 > Lambton Local > August 2016

Who should I appoint as the Executor of my will? by Chris Hill-Smith of Appleton Law, Lambton Who should I appoint as the Executor of my will? The choice of an executor for your will is a decision which should be given some thought. Usually the executors chosen will be the persons with the greatest interest in the estate or potentially the largest gift recipients. There may be circumstances where it would not be suitable to appoint those people as your executors. For instance if the major beneficiaries are children, they cannot act as executors while they are minors. If the estate is large or complicated involving companies, trusts or organisations, it would be more appropriate usually to appoint professional executors or the public trustee. There are costs involved of course in appointing such executors. If it is wished that a child be appointed as an executor, it is necessary to also appoint someone else who can act as executor until the child attains the age of majority. Often the executor appointed will be someone the testator trusts and is comfortable that their wishes will be complied with. That person may be a family member or friend and they may not necessarily be a beneficiary under the terms of the will. If you are contemplating appointing a family member or friend as your executor it is wise to speak to them and explain to them the duties they would be required to perform. The duties of an executor can be extensive, including firstly to execute the wishes of the deceased person. That includes gathering together all of the assets of the estate, paying the debts and liabilities of the deceased and distributing the rest of the estate to the beneficiaries named in the will. An executor is usually appointed as the executor and trustee. When the executorial duties are at an end

the person may be required to continue as trustee of the estate and to perform an ongoing role in relation to undistributed assets, managing and investing as necessary until the estate is finally distributed in totality. Generally the role of executor of a will is fiduciary in nature. That is, the duties carried out on a ‘without payment’ basis. However executors can apply to the court for a commission for the ‘pain and trouble’ of acting as the executor. Professional trustees would ensure that a charging cause was incorporated into the will so that they could charge fees for their services. And as is the most usual case, when the appointed executor instructs a solicitor to perform all of the duties of the executor and to administer the estate, the solicitor may charge their fees according to a scale. Staying hydrated has many benefits

with Danielle Miller, Pharmacist from

Elder Street Pharmacy

With a hint of Spring in the recent warmer weather, it’s a good time to remind ourselves of how important it is to stay hydrated. Drinking enough water is very important to remain healthy

Page 24 > Lambton Local > August 2016

and hydrated, especially during warmer weather, strenuous exercise and in periods of illness or exhaustion. With our bodies being made up of more than 70% water, it makes sense that so many of our systems need a constant supply of fluids to do their jobs. Some of the benefits of staying hydrated may be-Aids weight lossDrinking sufficient water can help flush excess toxins from your system. Also, we often mistake ‘thirsty’ for ‘hungry’ and eat unnecessary snacks when our body really wants water. -Improve brain functionBeing well hydrated improves blood flow through the body and back to the brain. This can help improve brain functions including memory and concentration. It can also assist mood levels. -Healthy skin-

Drinking water keeps your skin moist, helping maintain elasticity and prevent drying conditions such as dermatitis. While it is important to watch for the signs of dehydration (e.g. dark or little urine, dry mouth, dizziness, lack of tears if crying), it is a far better option to prevent dehydration be ensuring a sufficient intake of water (ie typically 8 glasses a day) or other fluids. This is particularly important if you are in a group considered to be at higher risk of dehydration (eg are pregnant/ breastfeeding, elderly or unwell). So please remember in the coming warmer weather, maintain a health level of hydration, and should you have any questions or concerns about your fluid intake, contact your doctor or pharmacist to discuss what’s best for you.

Borrowing to build wealth by Chris Stevens B. Fin, M. Acc, CPA Partner at GC Accountants

Building wealth can seem like an uphill battle when economic growth and interest rates are low. One way to take advantage of the current low interest rates and boost investment returns is to use a margin loan. A margin loan lets you borrow money to invest in a range of shares or managed funds, within the loan’s approved limit. You can leverage off your existing cash, shares, managed funds (or other assets approved by the lender) as the security, which offers you greater exposure to the investment markets. This can help boost returns because you have more money working for you. Depending on your individual circumstances, gearing can be a tax effective investment strategy because the borrowing costs may be deductible for the purpose of the investment income. However, margin loans will also magnify your losses in a market downturn. To get the most out of a gearing strategy with a margin loan, it is important to understand how the loan works and closely monitor the portfolio to manage the risks. You need to appreciate that a margin loan isn’t suitable for everyone and your financial adviser is best to advise you on this. Borrowing to invest should be a long-term strategy. This way, the market has time to produce the capital gains and investment income needed to provide you with a profit after repaying the margin loan plus interest. You may decide to use any dividends from the shares to pay down your loan as a way of further reducing risk. Margin loans also have tax advantages for investors when the interest expenses exceed the income derived from the investment, as investors can claim a deduction on those expenses. Depending on your individual circumstances, it may be advantageous to pre-pay interest up to 12 months in advance to bring the tax deductions forward. While some loans allow you to capitalise interest payments, that is not advised if you want to limit risk. If you would like more information or would like to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact myself. Relationships

What makes a good love relationship? Different people and even different experts will tell you different things. We do know that a good relationship is worth gold and is utterly precious. People don’t realise that sometimes until the relationship is in danger or is already gone. My Rule of Three for relationships has three ideals: healthy, adult and fulfilling. The first thing to say is that these are aspirational; in other words, they are goals. No-one has achieved them perfectly. But where we put some conscious energy into each of these areas, our relationships thrive. A healthy relationship is one where there is equal power, or as close to it as possible. Technically, we say that a large ‘power differential’ between two individuals is less than a healthy ideal. It can cause only one partner to have their needs met, or make one partner feel their life, thoughts, career, desires etc are not as important. This results in resentment. An adult relationship is about being grown-up. It is our ability to say sorry, to forgive, to let things go, to be considerate, to show and declare love and to respect our partner’s personality. It’s putting aside old adolescent views and behaviours; like mindreading, letting your partner put all the energy in, or being selfish. A fulfilling relationship is the pay-off. There has to be a pay-off. I have to feel that I’m better off with this person than without them. When the relationship is right, I feel greater happiness and satisfaction than stress, conflict, and angst. It’s not that the latter doesn’t exist, it’s more that there should be less of it than the good stuff. Where we actively look after our relationship, the greater likelihood that it will be a fulfilling one. - Stuart Edser

High Notes The twenty third annual Lambton High School Green Day was celebrated on Friday 24 June with the theme being “My Earth, My Duty”. The aim was to encourage the school community to make a positive change to make the world a better place environmentally. In the lead up to Green Day, many faculties within the school held a competition or activity, which met the requirements of the curriculum, while at the same time promoted an environmental message. The day started with a concert organised by the Music Department and the Student Leadership Body which involved music groups, a

drama video, an environmental game and a highly competitive fashion parade. Other activities involved a barbecue and a green cake stall; Mr Peter Jones from The Wetlands Education Centre brought a renewable energy display and provided garlic bread cooked in a solar cooker; environmental cake decorating competition; thought provoking environmental plays; and a presentation by Tzu Chi Volunteers who showed a video on the effects of plastics on the Earth. They illustrated how their organisation recycles plastic by making clothes which our students modelled. Star Struck 2016 - My Heroes, was an unforgettable experience for all involved, with a 60 piece orchestra, 3500 student dancers and a 450 piece choir in front of the packed out Newcastle Entertainment Centre. Tyler Chapman, Bailey Sansom, Amy Mason, Jayde Corner, Jada Maloney, Jacob Yeomans were all featured vocalists, along with Lachlan

Rinkin, Hayden Pearce, Tom Wilson, Finn Kingston, Chris Holburn and Issac McKinnon featuring in the Student Rock Bands. Chloe Doyle and Tom Wilson were members of the Orchestra, musically directed and conducted by our Head Teacher Creative and Performing Arts Mr. Wilson. We also had a two Drama groups who performed throughout the performance, including a group of Year 8 boys featuring in the Commemorate segment of the show. At school level, Artibald 2016 had a fantastic cross section of portrait artworks from Years 7-11. The competition was judged by Nicole Swilks from The Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, and she was most impressed with the standard and skills on show.
