Helping

It has been a difficult time for all, but Lambs Farm has found the strength to persevere and endure in spite of this year’s overwhelming obstacles.

Our amazing staff have come together to do whatever it takes to keep our residents safe and healthy, while the men and women of Lambs Farm continue to teach us to enjoy the simple things in life and see the light in times of darkness.

Our 2020 Annual Report shows that we can get through anything when we work together.

A Message from the President and CEO

Dear Friends,

In a year that has presented us with numerous challenges and conflicts, we continue to attempt to move ahead and hope all of this will eventually come to an end. An important concern, of course, has been to assure that all of our Participants remain free of the threat of the COVID-19 virus –and thankfully they have.

Our Participants have been required to remain in and/or around their own homes, and they have adapted well. Added staff has assisted in creating interests and activities in the homes throughout the day to keep them busy and fulfilled. Of course, given our typical tenacity, it is our goal to be able to return to some semblance of normalcy for them as soon as we are able.

fulfillment, every one requires a different path for achievement. As has always been the case, Lambs Farm assumes the responsibility for clearing those paths in order for our Participants to embark on their own continuous journeys toward who they were meant to be.

With our 60th anniversary approaching, we are reflecting on their experiences, as they continue to grow socially, vocationally, and athletically, and instilling feelings of self-worth, belonging and a sense of community. There is no end to what the men and women we serve can continue to learn and experience.

where people grow

As our Participants have aged and new, younger ones have come to Lambs Farm, we find ourselves with two increasingly separate groups of people. There are those who have spent all of their adult lives here, some of whom are no longer able to participate in all available activities, and others who have come to us having been more exposed to all the world has to offer, with expectations to continue to develop skills and acquire new, different interests.

We work to be very precise with regard to their needs and abilities and what we must do to identify and satisfy them. As we focus on each individual and their own level of personal

Our Mission

Your investment in our Participants has been, and will remain an important element to their past successes. It is, of course, our hope that you will continue to stay with them. With your help, we can provide the opportunities, and they will do the rest. Now, it is up to all of us to ensure it will be as true in the future as it has been in the past.

Sincerely,

Helping people with developmental disabilities lead productive, happy lives and connecting with the human spirit in us all

Heroes Among Us

Holidays looked a little different for the men and women of Lambs Farm this year, but staff were determined to make celebrations special at home.

Together they decorated eggs, worked on festive crafts and hosted their own barbeques. Birthdays got extra attention as group home gatherings were full of confetti, cake and laughter.

The dedication, compassion and effort staff put into making Participants smile shows just how much they truly care.

Lambs Farm Programs

With more than 59 years of service to people with developmental disabilities, the vision of our Co-Founders, Bob Terese and Corinne Owen, lives on and serves as the foundation for the future of Lambs Farm. An innovation from our inception, Lambs Farm has grown from a small pet shop in Chicago to a 72-acre campus where opportunity flourishes for nearly 250 men and women. Lambs Farm helps to create these opportunities by offering a growing number of options for Participants through a full range of employment, residential, wellness and life skills programs.

Employment and Day Program Services

The Lambs Farm campus businesses serve as vocational training sites for Participants, and teach valuable work skills. Participants may choose to work in community businesses. Individual placements are facilitated by the Lambs Farm employment specialist who works directly with Participants to be successful in their chosen jobs. Using a team approach, Supported Employment Programs meet the staffing needs of local businesses by providing an enclave of two-to-eight workers along with a Lambs Farm job coach. Participants at Lambs Industries, located near the Lambs Farm campus, undertake subcontract jobs such as packaging and assembly. When it is time to retire, Lambs Farm offers the Enrichment Center, which provides a variety of activities designed to help Participants have enjoyable and productive retirement years.

Residential Options

Lambs Farm offers residential options both on and off campus. Participants living in the campus group homes learn community and daily living skills in a supportive environment. The W. Clement and Jessie V. Stone Apartment Building features individual apartment units for Participants who have already acquired necessary daily living skills and require minimal staff support. The Green-Field intermediate care facility is home for Participants who require more staff assistance. Staff are available 24 hours a day to provide an increased level of care. Participants may also choose to live in a nearby community. These homes receive intermittent staff support.

Wellness, Recreation and Life Skills

The Wellness Center provides Participants a variety of options to practice healthy behaviors, offers a holistic approach to promoting healthy choices, and fosters a wellness culture. The focus is on overall health, promoted through physical activities such as

our Healthy Lambs exercise program and ten Special Olympics sports, as well as educating and encouraging our Participants to incorporate wellness into all aspects of their lives. The Founders Building, located on the Lambs Farm campus, holds a regulation-sized gym and physical fitness center. Social activities include specialinterest clubs, dances and many activities in the local communities.

The Quest Program provides opportunities for Participants to pursue their personal goals with classes available on a wide variety of topics, ranging from social and daily living skills to travel, history, sports and computers. Quest also offers many classes that help educate Participants on wellness-related topics. Classes take place on campus and in the community.

The Fine Arts program offers classes in the visual and performing arts. On their days off of work Participants can also take part in Venture, a leisure skills program.

Community Involvement

The men and women of Lambs Farm are integral members of the communities surrounding the campus. Many volunteer at local churches, long-term care facilities and other local organizations. Others find camaraderie through membership in community groups. Participants may also choose to join group outings to sporting events, musicals, dinners and more or use scheduled transportation to visit area stores, libraries, theaters or restaurants. Whether participating in local events and activities, visiting area attractions, relaxing in the parks or shopping, our Participants fully enjoy all of the amenities of their local community.

4 5

Despite summer activities being cancelled, the men and women of Lambs Farm continued to stay active and achieve goals.

Participants enjoyed the fresh air as they went for walks, rode bikes and learned how to maintain a flower and vegetable garden. Some felt a newfound excitement when staff took them fishing and others worked together to set up their own Special Olympic competitions at home.

No matter the circumstance, staff are dedicated to helping Participants learn and continue to grow.

The Farmyard is one of the most iconic businesses at Lambs Farm. Each year, families and friends look forward to petting the goats, feeding the horses, watching pigs wallow in the mud and making memories that will last a lifetime.

When the pandemic postponed our season opening, our staff knew they needed to find a way for people to stay connected with their favorite Farmyard friends. With the power of technology, Stella the Cow, Squirt the Donkey, Mezzo the Pig, Joseph the Camel and several other animals hopped on virtual conference calls and field trips, posed for Farmyard Photo Packages and made an appearance on our Sunday Funday Facebook Live shows.

Volunteers are the backbone of most non-profit organizations, and Lambs Farm is no exception. We are proud to benefit from the dedicated services of extraordinary individuals. Whether our volunteers are teaching Quest classes for Participants, providing technology assistance, painting buildings, coaching our Special Olympics athletes, sorting Thrift Shop donations, or playing one of the many other vital roles so important to fulfilling our mission, they deserve our gratitude and appreciation.

Friends of Lambs Farm advanced our mission in Fiscal Year 2020 by supporting Golf Day and Harvesting the Spirit, Downtown on the Farm—our two major fundraising events.

35th Annual Lambs Farm Golf Day in Memory of Jack Stein

July 9, 2019

As always, our Annual Lambs Farm Golf Day in Memory of Jack Stein was a spectacular day of golf with a special purpose. Over 180 golfers came to ThunderHawk Golf Club in Beach Park to support Lambs Farm and the remarkable men and women we serve. Our morning and afternoon tee times allowed more golfers to take part, offering them a choice of Best Ball or Scramble. Golf Day raised over $148,000 through generous corporate, foundation, and individual contributions. A good time was had by all, including our Lambs Farm Golf Team!

Harvesting the Spirit, Downtown on the Farm November 9, 2019

Lambs Farm brought some down-home country charm to the big city with our Harvesting the Spirit, Downtown on the Farm 2019 gala. Over 220 guests gathered at the Harold Washington Library Center in the beautiful Winter Garden for a festive evening of good food and good cheer, music, dancing, and games. Guests bid generously for fun experiences and interesting items in our live and silent auctions and outdid themselves giving to support Lambs Farm programs and services in the “paddle raiser,” which raised a record $55,850. The evening’s highlights were a performance by the Lambs Farm Cast of Peter Pan and a special award presentation—the Living Legacy Award was presented to Thomas Durbin.

Lambs Farm wishes to thank these businesses that employed our Participants during the past year.
