Growing Together

Nearly 60 years ago, our Co-Founders planted the seeds of an idea that grew into the exemplary organization where adults with disabilities could thrive. As the years go on, we continue to plant new seeds to help the men and women of Lambs Farm lead fulfilling lives. Through the many opportunities available, they create friendships that last a lifetime, celebrate achievements with their family, thank volunteers for their support and build strong bonds with staff.

The relationships shared in our 2019 Annual Report show that as the men and women of Lambs Farm continue to grow, we all grow together. where people grow

A Message from the President and CEO

Dear Friends,

An important element in the philosophy of Lambs Farm has been to provide sufficient diversity in our programming in order to meet the desires and needs of all Participants. Originally, our population was made up of people generally similar in age but with somewhat diverse interests. Our hope was that the programs we offered would be embraced as the Participants created lives for themselves using the skills they had to learn and grow – and they did. Despite many challenges, they forged ahead and continued to learn, to work and to hone new skills, with a goal always to be as independent as possible.

As time went on, new Participants reached the top of our Wait List and joined us after waiting many years for the opportunity, and we have added or revised some of our offerings in an effort to appeal to all. Since then, our Participants live, work and recreate together as one large family with numerous individual options, many of which they have suggested.

With the support of Family, Friends, Staff and Volunteers they are Growing Together making lives for themselves that are personally interesting and satisfying. They take ownership in their homes, hold jobs on or off our campus, earn income and pay taxes. Some have “retired” and spend their days in our Enrichment Program – always keeping busy and trying new things.

Although the State subsidizes the costs of housing and some vocational support, it does not adequately meet its obligation to do so beyond basic life necessities. As a result, it is up to us to ensure that our Participants remain in step with society. New ideas and new opportunities must be readily available, together with the adjustments that need to be made to accommodate the full spectrum of our population – both younger and older. They, of course, are doing their part to keep up, and our programming needs to do the same.

Because of your generous support, Lambs Farm remains at the forefront of service to people with developmental disabilities. As the world has changed, our Participants continue their pursuit of more and more opportunities that serve to nurture more and more abilities. Their goal – and ours – is for their personal fulfillment to remain a reality.

Sincerely,

Our Mission

Helping people with developmental disabilities lead productive, happy lives and connecting with the human spirit in us all

When Participants arrive at Lambs Farm, they are opening a door to endless opportunity and growth.

Families feel an unexplainable sense of pride as they watch their loved ones achieve goals they never dreamed possible. They applaud them as they step on stage for the first time, cheer as they compete in their favorite Special Olympics sport, watch them take on a new form of independence and see the world like they never have before.

Families quickly learn that as their loved one grows, the whole family grows together.

Lambs Farm Programs

With more than 58 years of service to people with developmental disabilities, the vision of our Co-Founders, Bob Terese and Corinne Owen, lives on and serves as the foundation for the future of Lambs Farm. An innovation from our inception, Lambs Farm has grown from a small pet shop in Chicago to a 72-acre campus where opportunity flourishes for nearly 250 men and women. Lambs Farm helps to create these opportunities by offering a growing number of options for Participants through a full range of employment, residential, wellness and life skills programs.

Employment and Day Program Services

The Lambs Farm campus businesses serve as vocational training sites for Participants, and teach valuable work skills. Participants may choose to work in community businesses. Individual placements are facilitated by the Lambs Farm employment specialist who works directly with Participants to be successful in their chosen jobs. Using a team approach, Supported Employment Programs meet the staffing needs of local businesses by providing an enclave of two-to-eight workers along with a Lambs Farm job coach. Participants at Lambs Industries, located near the Lambs Farm campus, undertake subcontract jobs such as packaging and assembly. When it is time to retire, Lambs Farm offers the Enrichment Center, which provides a variety of activities designed to help Participants have enjoyable and productive retirement years.

Residential Options

Lambs Farm offers residential options both on and off campus. Participants living in the campus group homes learn community and daily living skills in a supportive environment. The W. Clement and Jessie V. Stone Apartment Building features individual apartment units for Participants who have already acquired necessary daily living skills and require minimal staff support. The Green-Field intermediate care facility is home for Participants who require more staff assistance. Staff are available 24 hours a day to provide an increased level of care. Participants may also choose to live in a nearby community. These homes receive intermittent staff support.

Wellness, Recreation and Life Skills

The Wellness Center provides Participants a variety of options to practice healthy behaviors, offers a holistic approach to promoting healthy choices, and fosters a wellness culture. The focus is on overall health, promoted through physical activities such as

our Healthy Lambs exercise program and ten Special Olympics sports, as well as educating and encouraging our Participants to incorporate wellness into all aspects of their lives. The Founders Building, located on the Lambs Farm campus, holds a regulation-sized gym and physical fitness center. Social activities include specialinterest clubs, dances and many activities in the local communities.

The Quest Program provides opportunities for Participants to pursue their personal goals with classes available on a wide variety of topics, ranging from social and daily living skills to travel, history, sports and computers. Quest also offers many classes that help educate Participants on wellness-related topics. Classes take place on campus and in the community.

The Fine Arts program offers classes in the visual and performing arts. On their days off of work Participants can also take part in Venture, a leisure skills program.

Community Involvement

The men and women of Lambs Farm are integral members of the communities surrounding the campus. Many volunteer at local churches, long-term care facilities and other local organizations. Others find camaraderie through membership in community groups. Participants may also choose to join group outings to sporting events, musicals, dinners and more or use scheduled transportation to visit area stores, libraries, theaters or restaurants. Whether participating in local events and activities, visiting area attractions, relaxing in the parks or shopping, our Participants fully enjoy all of the amenities of their local community.

Friends

At Lambs Farm, Participants start with a root of friendship that often grows into a tree of love.

The way the men and women at Lambs Farm connect with one another is truly special. Housemates excitedly gather around the TV to watch their favorite show and teammates encourage one another to always do their best. Co-workers learn the ins and outs of a job together and retirees bond over shared experiences. Participants who join clubs and classes hone in on their talents and inspire each other every day.

Out of all the wonderful aspects of Lambs Farm, Participants will assure you that it is their friends who make them smile brighter, laugh louder and grow stronger.

Friends of Lambs Farm advanced our mission in Fiscal Year 2019 by supporting Golf Day and Harvesting the Spirit, Downtown on the Farm—our two major fundraising events.

34th Annual Lambs Farm Golf Day in Memory of Jack Stein

July 10, 2018

The second Tuesday in July was a spectacular day of golf with a special purpose at ThunderHawk Golf Club in Beach Park. Almost 200 golfers turned out to support Lambs Farm and the remarkable men and women we serve. Morning and afternoon tee times offered a choice of Best Ball or Scramble and allowed more golfers to take part. Golf Day raised over $163,000 through generous corporate, foundation and individual contributions. Everyone had a great time, including our Lambs Farm Golf Team!

Harvesting the Spirit, Downtown on the Farm November 5, 2018

With our Harvesting the Spirit, Downtown on the Farm gala, Lambs Farm brought some down-home country charm to the Chicago Cultural Center. Over 220 guests enjoyed a festive evening that featured good food and good cheer, music, dancing and games. Guests bid for exciting experiences and interesting items in our live and silent auctions, and our “paddle raiser” succeeded in raising almost $49,000 to support our programs and services. The highpoints of the evening were a lively performance by the Lambs Farm Cast of Mary Poppins and a special award presentation. Our Living Legacy Award was presented to Solita (Pat) Parker.

Lambs Farm wishes to thank these businesses that employed our Participants during the past year.
