2023 Annual Report: Change & Inspire

Page 1

Helping people with developmental disabilities lead productive, happy lives and connecting with the human spirit in us all

CHANGE AND INSPIRE 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

Bob Terese and Corrine Owen, our inspired and inspiring co-founders, created a new path for people with developmental disabilities when they opened The Lambs pet shop in downtown Chicago in 1961. The 12 adventuresome original employees on State Street demonstrated to the world that they were capable of getting a job, taking on responsibilities and forming connections, showing the public that we are all more alike than different.

Sixty-two years later, Lambs Farm participants continue to inspire us every day, teaching us what it means to embrace life with gusto and meaning. With exciting changes and new programs on the horizon, we are building on our strong foundation and growing an even brighter and bolder future for Lambs Farm.

Sincerely,

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

We continue our co-founders legacy by offering meaningful work experiences for over 280 participants. Our team of employment specialists are there to support the men and women of Lambs Farm every step of the way, providing job training and guidance to help them succeed.

CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT

Our Thrift Shop, Garden & Pet Center, Farmyard, Cafe, Country Store & Bakery, Lambs Industries, maintenance, shipping and housekeeping departments serve as vocational training sites. These roles are designed to help participants learn skills they can utilize in their employment journeys both on and off campus.

We had some exciting updates and business opportunities happen this year!

4 CHANGE AND INSPIRE

The Magnolia Cafe partnered with Swiss Mountain Coffee to create a Lambs Farm whole bean coffee blend. This new offering warms the hearts of visitors and provides additional jobs for our participants.

While working together as a team, the men and women of Lambs Farm proudly weigh, package, seal, label and initial each bag.

New point of sale systems were installed in our campus businesses. Ruth, a Lambs Farm participant and proud Cedar Chest Thrift Shop employee, was excited to learn how to operate the upgraded program!

Thanks to a generous donor, the Dogwood Garden & Pet Center viewing rooms and floor pen got a makeover. The new and improved spaces, now called the Alicat Showroom and Alicat Playpen, have a fresh, modern look and give our rescue animals plenty of room to run, play and meet their forever families.

CHANGE AND INSPIRE 5

COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT

Our growing employment program gives participants the opportunity to explore jobs in the community. As they fill out an application, prepare for the interview process, form bonds with their coworkers and take on new responsibilities, participants gain confidence and independence.

Friends and housemates, Matt and Wayne, shared the dream of getting a job at Home Depot. With determination and hard work, both men applied to be lot associates and nailed their interviews. They are now thriving at work, helping in other departments and taking on new challenges.

6 CHANGE AND INSPIRE

After gaining experience in the housekeeping department at Lambs Farm, Linda was ready to apply for a cleaning crew position at Veritas Document Solutions. She keeps the conference rooms spic and span, stocks the coffee station and makes everyone smile.

Andy, Josh and Jimmy are proud employees in the janitorial department at Sedgebrook. With support from a job coach, these men are continuously setting new goals.

HOME BASED SUPPORT PROGRAM

The Home Based Support Self Direction Assistance program offers individuals with disabilities the opportunity to continue to live with their family or semi-independently with provided support. Self direction assistants help the individual, or the individual’s family or representative, to arrange for, direct and manage services.

This can include:

• Assistance with creating, maintaining and monitoring each client’s annual budget

• Facilitating services and budget for day programs, Independent Service Coordination and behavior services

• Assistance with Division of Rehabilitation Services referrals

• Assistance with completing annual required documents

• Assistance with applying for emergency funding or one-time funding items such as adaptive equipment, home/vehicle modifications or assistive technology

Ryan has been part of the Home Based Self Direction Assistance program for over a decade. Day to day life can be busy and overwhelming, but Ryan’s family has been able to navigate through challenging times knowing Lambs Farm staff is just an email or phone call away. The supportive communication, valuable information and trusted relationships help Ryan succeed at work, partake in Lambs Farm programs and continue to grow.

RESIDENTIAL SERVICES

Participants can choose from a variety of living options. Lambs Farm has nine group homes on campus, individual apartments, an intermediate care facility and community houses. No matter where they call home, participants build friendships with their housemates, and together they learn how to prepare meals, take on household chores, make memories and have fun.

8 CHANGE AND INSPIRE

From culinary classes and movie premieres to museums and shopping trips, participants love house outings. Many recently discovered their passion for volunteering after being introduced to opportunities at Feed My Starving Children.

Over the last few months, we’ve been working on The Porch Project. We added bright pops of colors to the front doors, new house numbers, porch lights, benches and awnings. These upgrades not only match the energy and enthusiasm at Lambs Farm, but they also make it easier for participants to locate their homes.

No matter the occasion, participants are always ready to celebrate! This year, staff took it up a notch and planned holiday house decorating competitions. House 8 won the first trophy!

CHANGE AND INSPIRE 9

LIFE PROGRAMS

Lambs Farm focuses on new experiences, as they are an essential part of learning and growth. Here’s a look at our Life Programs.

DEVELOPMENT EVENTS

Every year, friends of Lambs Farm come together in wonderfully generous support of our two major fundraisers— a spring gala and a summer golf day, and this year was no exception. We appreciate these generous individuals and companies whose event sponsorship and donations made all the difference to our programs and services!

Celebrating the Spirit 2023 was our first in-person gala since 2019, and it was a smash hit. Cuneo Mansion & Gardens was a beautiful venue, the elegant meal was delicious, the golden ticket raffle and paddle drop were exciting, the participant volunteers loved seating guests, and the dancers loved the band. But the highlight of the evening was the awards program. We were delighted to celebrate long-time Lambs Farm Chair, Robert Neiman, with the first Spirit of Giving Award. Bob, who epitomizes the spirit of giving, was roasted by his sons Daniel and David. John, Doug, and Nick Durbin accepted The Casanova Award, given this year to honor three generations of the Durbin Family’s remarkable commitment to Lambs Farm, which began with John and Doug’s parents, Bob and Julie. The Living Legacy Award this year recognized Eli Spector for his commitment to trying something new and growing lifelong.

We are so grateful to our Jubilee Sponsor—Packaging Corporation of America. A special thank you also to our Celebrate Sponsors—The Aldridge Family, Paul Frederick & Marilyn Rosengarden Frederick/Autohaus on Edens, Nancy & Bob Goerne, Barbara Sheahan, and Joe & Carol Milburn—and our Cheer and Salute Sponsors: Alera Group, Michael & Toby Liner, Abbott, Assurance, MedScript, Gerald & Olivia Shapiro, and Uline.

16 CHANGE AND INSPIRE

The 38th Annual Lambs Farm Golf Day in Memory of Jack Stein was a great day of golf at the world-class Briarwood Country Club in Deerfield. Golf Day featured morning and afternoon tee times, a fun lunch program introducing the Lambs Farm Golf Team, and a full day of golf on the manicured greens followed by a convivial reception.

MedScript Long Term Care Pharmacy and Packaging Corporation of America were our Master Sponsors, and we cannot thank them enough. The generosity of Romanucci & Blandin, Horizon Carpentry, LV Property Management, LLC., Exclusive Woodworking and nuHaus, Ravine Park Partners, MPS Law, Peter & Pam Levy, Horizon DMB, Schaumburg Toyota, Levenfeld Pearlstein, Uline, Abt, Alera Group, Golder Family Foundation, J.A.B.
