vosque

Elle Vosque is a queen who refuses to blend in. With charisma that crackles like electricity and a fashion sense that turns every sidewalk into a runway she owns, Elle has fast become one of the most exciting names in British drag. Bursting onto the scene with powerhouse performances and an iron–sharp wit, she has captivated audiences across the UK and she is only just getting started. From club stages to television screens, Elle Vosque is making sure the world knows her name. Ahead of her long-awaited appearance in Northern Ireland, Elle sat down with GNI Magazine to talk Drag Race dreams, future world domination, and her glamorous night out at the GNI Awards.

Let’s start at the beginning: who is Elle Vosque and what inspired you to step into drag for the very first time?

As a kid I was always a creative person! Always into art and anything that I could express myself with. As a teenager I got into Musical Theatre and I think that really changed things for me! When I was 16 I played ‘Mary Sunshine’ in an amateur dramatics production of Chicago the musical. So this was my first time in ‘Drag’ on stage but at the time I saw it as acting a role rather than Drag! About a year later I watched RuPaul’s Drag Race for the first time and was hooked! I realised how many different elements were involved in the art form of drag and it clicked that a lot of the skill sets I had developed in art and drama could be put to use in a Drag persona. The rest was herstory!

How would you describe your drag aesthetic — and what makes your style distinctly “Elle Vosque”?

As Elle I don’t limit myself to one look or one aesthetic but I’ve been told that no matter what look I go for it has an Elle feeling to it!

A go to Elle look would be something very pink, girly and glam- but I’m not afraid to wear something that people might think “hmmm that’s a bit different” either! Drag Race UK has become a cultural powerhouse. Competing on the show must have been a dream of yours- how did you feel walking into the Werk room?

Walking into the Werk room was insane! It literally feels like you are walking into the TV screen! The Set of Drag race felt and looked exactly how it did on TV! The final few days before walking in nearly destroyed meafter years of wanting this and a hard few weeks preparing everything I was suddenly dresding the experience in fear of not being able to cope being away from home for so long without the luxury of even phoning home the whole experience! But after a few days in, being able to relate my anxieties

with the other queens things became easier and then things become really fun!

After having completed the experiencewhich was your favourite challenge and which challenge sent you into a panic spiral?

Ok, so my absolute favourite challenge was the ‘Peter Pansy- the Rusical’. Going into Drag Race I knew I needed to slay the Rusical! It was definitely the most fun that me and the girls had on set- we just loved every moment of it. And I won the challenge so that also helps! Haha

Out of all of the challenges I would say ‘The Roast’ sent me into spiral the most as it’s something I had never done before! I knew I was a funny queen but in the context of a roast it was rather scary! Stakes were also heightened as it was the semi- final challenge so I had to make it work! And I did!

You attended the GNI Awards last Saturday and turned quite a few heads. How was the experience of celebrating queer talent here in Northern Ireland?

Yes, I did indeed attend the GNI Awards! I represented Union st Bar and Kremlin as they were up for a few awards. Getting all dolled up was well worth it- it was such a fab night! I’ve always celebrated and been nurtured by Queer talent in Belfast so it’s always lovely to have so many members of our community in the one room having a ball!

Drag can be both empowering and exhausting. What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far and what’s been the toughest challenge to overcome?

I think the most rewarding moment of my career was being a representation of the queer quarter in Belfast on TV. It was important for me to showcase what our little corner of the world can do!

I would say the toughest challenge to overcome has been balancing my life whilst building my drag career. For the past 5 years I’ve been in full time education and part time employment whilst trying to make a name for myself and make my dreams come true! People think drag is fun (which it really is) but don’t always see the work behind it! It takes blood, sweat and tears to be a working drag queen!

The drag scene is evolving constantly. What excites you most about where UK drag is going right now and particularly here in Belfast? As Drag evolves so does the scene around it! Although drag has always been about creating art and entertainment, I feel like the drag is moving in a way that welcomes a wider variety of what drag can look like! And because local drag has nurtured more different kinds of drag entertainment, audiences have become more willing to engage and go support drag that’s a lil different than traditional ’palatable drag’!

We know fans adore you but what is one thing you wish audiences understood better about the life of a drag artist?

I wish that the audience could further understand how hard it is to do drag! It takes so much drive and passion to make things happen for yourself! And when you go to a drag show or watch a drag queen on TV I think that people can forget that drag queens do all this themselves whilst having separate lives too!

One thing I also think is very important to is SUPPORT YOUR DRAG QUEENS! So many people love and value the art form of drag but in recent years it’s becoming increasingly harder for drag events and queer independent nightlife to survive! I can’t count the amount of times I’ve heard of queer groups working hard to put on events that

unfortunately have to cancel. When you see an event that tickles your fancy- buy a ticket, don’t wait til the last minute as last minute won’t guarantee tee the event goes ahead as if there’s not enough tickets sales things can’t happen! Which is a huge shame!

Looking ahead, what big dreams are you manifesting? Tours, music, acting, global takeover, what’s coming next for Elle Vosque?

So in my near future I have a few tours to plug! I will be performing in an adult panto across the UK from January! Then I’ll be on tour with the full Cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK s7 in April which is super exciting!

But what I’ve really got my sights set on is more theatre work! My dream is to be in a West End showwhich I truly believe I can achieve!

Finally, what message would you give to young queer people who look up to you and want to follow their own creative path?

I would say always do you! No matter what you do in life, if you put yourself into it you will enjoy it more, succeed in it more and continue developing yourself as a creative! Literally being yourself is the most important piece of advice for any circumstance. If you succeed you can have pride in that you being you got you there!

And if you fail at something you can think “well I gave it my all and was true to myself whilst trying” and that

can give you peace of mind that it wasn’t for you!….. yet.

Be strong and wrong, not right and sh*te x Elle Vosque is a queen with drive, heart, and a hunger for every spotlight she steps into. Whether she is sashaying onstage, mingling on the red carpet, or dreaming up her next jaw-dropping look, she carries a sense of pride and purpose that goes far beyond the makeup. If the future of drag is bold, brilliant, and unapologetically glamorous then Elle Vosque is already leading the charge.

CAROLINE CURRAN

Deck The Halls

There is no Christmas in Belfast without a few belly laughs, and this year Caroline Curran is ready to deliver them in full festive force. The beloved Northern Irish actress and comedy writer returns to the Grand Opera House with Deck The Halls, a hilarious new show running from 4 to 31 December. Known for her quick wit, larger-than-life characters and stories that feel unmistakably local, Caroline promises a night of laughter, chaos and a touch of holiday sparkle. She chats with Daniel about Christmas traditions, writing comedy that hits home and what audiences can expect from her latest festive adventure.

Caroline, Christmas in Belfast and comedy on stage seem to go hand in hand. What inspired Deck The Halls and how did this idea come to life?

Deck The Hols! Was born out of my curiosity of being away somewhere sunny for Christmas. Deck the Hols! is centered around Scarlett, a famous actress who has decided to go on a journey of self discovery after a messy break up. Her adoptive parents passed away and she has travelled to a Spanish Island to scatter their ashes at their favourite holiday spot.

The adoption story line comes from my mother who was adopted and I feel the character of Scarlett who is on a quest to hopefully discover her true identity and maybe a new family member or possibly love. You’ll have to come and see.

You have become something of a festive favourite for local audiences. What keeps drawing you back to the Christmas season for your shows?

I have been performing, writing and acting in Christmas shows for nearly 20 years now. The last 15 were mainly adult shows. I just found that the children had the Pantos and I wanted to give adults a great night out. A Christmas show with heart. I started writing with my friend Julie Maxwell up at Theatre at the Mill and when she passed I took a break. I was unsure I could write and I didn’t know if I wanted to write again. But after much persuasion from friends and family I gave it a go. And here I am at the GOH studio. I had 10 great years at Theatre at the Mill, Two amazing years at The Mac and who knows what 2026 will bring but I’m excited to see.

Without giving too much away, what is Deck The Halls all about and who are we going to meet on stage?

Scarlett is the main Character in Deck The Hols!

and when she goes to the Spanish Island she will meet all sorts of people who are on holiday there. I have two amazing actors Rhodri Lewis and Patrick Buchanan with me and they have starred in my previous Christmas Shows.

Hopefully people will recognize characters that they bump into on holiday and a few locals too.

Your humour always feels proudly Belfast and totally relatable. How do you manage to keep it fresh and still give audiences something new every year?

The audiences here in Belfast are incredible and I just always try to keep things fresh. I write based on my own experiences which I think a lot of people relate to and I always just want to make people laugh, usually based on my own embarrassing situations.

Comedy and Christmas can both be a bit over the top in the best way possible. What is your recipe for getting that balance just right?

I feel that to get the best out of comedy you have to have heart running through the script. My previous shows always tend to have a through line, which is in direct relation to my own life. My previous shows touched on Alcoholism, Dementia and this year its Adoption. All with sensitivity. I write from the heart but with a comedy twist.

The LGBTQIA community has always loved your bold characters and honest humour. Do you ever think about queer audiences when writing your material?

I have a lot of friends who are LGBTQIA and who are amazing in the industry. I always try to incorporate everyone in my shows but I leave writing the Dame to my friend Neil. He is an incredible writer and director and he’s funnier than me so I leave that to him lol. He is also playing the Dame in Brassneck Theatre Company’s panto this year.

If you could cast any drag queen or local legend to appear in Deck The Halls, who would it be and why?

I would love a Real Drag Queens of Belfast play. Full of fun, frocks and fabulousness. I may get Neil to write it and I’ll produce it. But also make a cameo appearance just for the craic.

You are known for creating unforgettable female characters. Is there a bit of Caroline in each of them, or are they completely wild inventions?

I do think there is a little bit of me in my

characters. I also draw from people I know when I’m creating new people. When I’m doing so many people I look for quirks or voice or walks, anything that people will recognise but yes it’s usually from people I know and LOVE.

What is your favourite part of performing to a Belfast audience? They are not exactly shy when it comes to joining in.

My favourite part of performing to a Belfast audience is the sound of roaring laughter. There is nothing like hearing 1000 people laughing at whatever scenario I am performing in. I’m just so thankful to every person who has come and supported me time and again. THANKYOU from the bottom of my heart.

When you are not making everyone laugh on stage, what does your ideal Christmas look like at home?

My ideal Christmas is at home with my family and friends. I have a daughter who is eight and I love seeing her face on Christmas morning. Then having a nice quiet dinner, maybe a wee tipple then fall asleep watching all the Christmas specials. I’m just so thankful for my loved ones and I just want to spend that special time with them.

If Santa offered you one wish for your career in the year ahead, what would you ask for?

My one wish from Santa would be to have a steady year next year. As you may know with acting it’s not a steady job so I’m just thankful to get employed. Long may it continue.

Finally, why should people make Deck The Halls part of their Christmas plans this year?

I think people should make Deck The Hols! part of their Christmas because I’m determined to give the people of Belfast a real fun, warm Christmassy night out. A bit of craic for an hour and hopefully I’ll make you laugh.

Jason Gould

A story of truth, growth and creative freedom comes alive in music

Jason Gould has spent a lifetime surrounded by music, yet his latest release feels like a personal revelation. The son of Barbra Streisand and Elliott Gould, Jason has grown from Hollywood actor to a powerful voice in his own right. His new album Where We Fall is OUT NOW through Backwards Dog Records, it blends contemporary pop with classic standards, reflecting both his heritage and his evolution as an artist. Honest, soulful and unapologetically human, the record captures a man who has learned to embrace every side of himself. Jason speaks with Daniel about rediscovering his voice, growing up in the spotlight, and the courage it takes to live openly and create authentically.

Jason, Where We Fall feels deeply personal and reflective. What does this album represent for you at this stage of your life?

Thanks for noticing Daniel! True, I’ve lived through a lot at this point in my life. I’ve always been an observer of the human experience, both from the inside and looking outward. So yes every song I write or sing has to reflect something I can stand behind. Something I know to be true. Whether it’s about the meaning of love, loss, or longing.

You grew up surrounded by music legends. When did you first realise that creating music was your own calling rather than just part of your family background?

I was always drawn to create music from a young age. I would sit at the piano and create melodies when I was a child, so it’s been know to me, only it took me a while to have to courage to open my mouth and use my voice.

Your mother, Barbra Streisand, is one of the most iconic voices in the world. What has she taught you about artistry, discipline and staying true to yourself?

My mother always had creative control of what she did musically, so I’m sure that influenced me in being true to myself. You have to know yourself well enough to know what you like and what you don’t. For me, making music is such an instinctual discipline, you have to feel it or it’s no good.

The album moves between modern pop sounds and timeless classics. How did you decide which songs to include and how to balance those two worlds?

Well I thought it was cool to move between the past and the present, then and now, but honestly it wasn’t planned. It just felt right to keep the flow of energy unexpected, and yet I also discovered a through-line between some of the songs written many decades ago and the songs I recently wrote. Certain themes are timeless.

Where We Fall explores love, vulnerability and spiritual connection. Was there a specific moment or experience that inspired the emotional core of this record?

I think it’s sort of a culmination of the many lessons I’ve learned in life. That Love is something that is

born and grows within us and that we have to give it away to keep it alive….also not to waste our time or jeopardize our self-esteem by chasing unavailable people.

You have said that making music helped you reclaim your voice. Can you tell us more about that journey and how it shaped the artist you have become?

I suppose it helped me reclaim the parts of myself I had buried or was afraid of exposing. It requires profound vulnerability and a willingness to be naked emotionally. I always felt I had to protect my mother or my father for some reason, and sometimes I threw myself under the bus as not to make anyone uncomfortable. Expressing myself musically coincided with expressing myself in other ways too.

Many of your fans in the LGBTQIA community see you as an inspiration. Looking back, how did being outed in the early nineties shape your perspective on visibility and acceptance?

You know I never considered myself in the closet, and yet I was well aware of the homophobia around me, so I was cautious. I’ve always been private and

careful about who I could trust, mostly because of growing up in the orbit of my parents fame. It takes courage to be yourself unapologetically. It took me well into adulthood to get there.

You have spoken beautifully about how far the world has come for queer people, but also about the challenges that remain. What gives you hope about where we are heading?

There are still folks who are somehow threatened by LGBTQ people. I know there’s been tremendous fear and judgement in the past, but I see the younger generations so much more tolerant of our unique differences. To me that is what makes the world beautiful, we come in all shapes and sizes, and preferences. And we need to accept each other in all of our multitudes of expression. That’s what Love does, it makes room for everyone, and it’s what the world needs most at this time in my opinion.

The song World Gone Crazy feels especially timely. How do you process global chaos and turn it into something creative rather than despairing?

Yeah - well writing a song is a small but powerful way of channelling the angst of the world into something powerful and even beautiful. That’s what artists do. Freedom of expression is under attack in many places, and that’s why the arts matter more now than ever.

“we need to accept each other in all of our multitudes of expression”

I do feel a purposefulness in what I create musically. The world has plenty of good music to listen to. I want to remind the listener of their humanity, of the value of humility, that feeling everything is a superpower, that we are all mostly the same at the deepest level. That most of us seek to know love, to feel love, and to be love...and of course to remind that we are here only for a short while, so let’s be kind to one another.

Finally, if you could speak to your younger self

back when you first entered the industry, what words of advice or comfort would you give him?

Oh gosh, I would just say, with compassion and love, “ you are enough.”

With Where We Fall, Jason Gould delivers an album that feels both intimate and universal. It is a celebration of resilience, self-acceptance and the enduring power of love in all its forms. As he bridges the worlds of classic songcraft and modern pop, Jason continues to prove that

You have worked with incredible producers and collaborators on this record. What did you learn from those partnerships and how did they influence the sound of the album?

I always love to see what everyone brings to the table, and give them the space to manifest whatever magic they may have to offer. It’s a delicate dance to collaborate with talented and creative artists. We are all so sensitive. We need to be encouraged and loved in a way as to allow for the best work to come through.

When you step on stage or into the studio now, what kind of energy or message do you want to share with your listeners?

afterdrive

The Alt Pop Breakouts You Need on Your Radar

Rising fast from the heart of Ipswich, AFTERDRIVE are quickly becoming one of the UK’s most exciting new bands. Their latest single Necklace, out now on all major platforms, sees the four piece stepping up their sound with a track that is as emotionally raw as it is stadium ready.

“Necklace feels like a statement,” the band explains. “It is more driven, more physical, more intimate, exploring passion in its rawest sense. It still has that AFTERDRIVE sound, but with a different kind of energy that we know our fans will love.”

Their evolution has been accelerated by a whirlwind year: national radio support including BBC Radio 1, high energy headline shows, and in a moment they will never forget, supporting Ed Sheeran at his sold out hometown show at Portman Road Stadium. With a loyal fanbase rapidly growing, AFTERDRIVE are proving they are built for big stages.

And there is much more ahead. Necklace marks the start of a new era, leading into a run of releases and a brand new EP coming in 2026. The band will also headline The Waterfront Studio on January 31 as part of Independent Venue Week.

Formed through jam sessions between siblings Ben Watts (vocals) and Joe Watts (drums), and later completed by best mates Ed Ruff (bass) and Luke Ellis (guitar), AFTERDRIVE are a tight knit unit with undeniable chemistry.

We caught up with all four members to dive into their quirks, inspirations, and some unforgettable moments along the way.

Ben Watts, Vocals

Weirdest pre show ritual?

I always end up pacing to burn off nerves and I cannot go on stage without checking my mic about ten times even though I know it is fine. Not exactly weird, but definitely a habit now.

First song you ever learned to sing?

I never really learned by covering others. It was always about trying original music and figuring out my own sound.

Your guilty pleasure song?

Carry Out by Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. No shame, it is such a groove.

Dream collaboration?

Charlie Simpson. A brilliant songwriter and a Suffolk legend. It feels fitting.

Most embarrassing on stage moment?

At the LCR in Norwich I shouted out the bands and accidentally called The Clause “The Clash.” Silence, then laughter. We smashed the set though.

Ed Ruff, Bass

Favourite snack while writing songs?

A white sugar free Monster. It keeps the energy up through long sessions.

First instrument you learned?

Piano when I was about 7 or 8. I got Grade 1 in classical and jazz.

A song you wish you had written?

Closer by Kings of Leon. It is powerful, and the bassline is incredible.

Weirdest fan encounter so far?

Delivering a parcel to someone wearing an AFTERDRIVE t shirt. Surreal but amazing.

Favourite hobby outside music?

Golf. Whenever I can find the time.

Luke Ellis, Guitar

Greatest guitar solo of all time?

For me, melody wise it is either Live Forever or Purple Rain. But the greatest is Stairway to Heaven. One day, an AFTERDRIVE solo might be up there.

Dream stage to perform on?

Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage or Wembley Stadium.

Joe Watts, Drums

Craziest place you have ever played?

Portman Road Stadium supporting Ed Sheeran. Hearing the drums echo in a stadium of 20,000 people was insane.

Favourite drumsticks?

Vic Firth. I used to use the Travis Barker customs but I broke them rocking out too hard.

Musical hero growing up?

Travis Barker. His rhythms are creative and instantly recognisable.

Most memorable crowd reaction?

Again, Portman Road. The hometown roar was unreal.

Hidden talent?

I used to play sports at a high level, especially rugby. I still think I have it.

Weirdest sound effect you have created?

We mess with looping random sounds through the pickups, like alarms, anything.

Bandmate quirk that cracks you up?

Ed stepping up to the mic with his ultra deep voice. It shakes the whole room.

Favourite song to jam alone?

Our own songs, adding new parts or outros for fun.

What is Next for AFTERDRIVE?

New music, a new era, bigger venues, a fanbase growing by the day. There is no slowing these lads down.

Stream Necklace everywhere now.

Catch AFTERDRIVE live at The Waterfront Studio on January 31.

Keep your eyes on Ipswich’s finest, because AFTERDRIVE are only just getting started.

Q+A with Daniel May

DAN MILLAR trailblazing entrepreneur

Dan Millar is a trailblazing entrepreneur and one of the most influential voices in the United Kingdom when it comes to early careers, social mobility and youth empowerment. His story has become a powerful example of what young people can achieve when ambition meets opportunity. At just 17 years old, working from his bedroom in Derby with only a laptop, determination and a passion for helping others, Dan founded Young Professionals UK. His mission from day one was clear. He wanted to level the playing field for students from every type of background and give young people real access to career paths that once felt out of reach.

A decade later, that mission has grown into a nationwide movement. Young Professionals UK now connects more than six hundred thousand ambitious young people with world leading employers from a wide range of sectors. Dan has built a platform that introduces students to genuine career opportunities and gives them the tools, confidence and guidance they need to succeed. The list of partners he has engaged speaks for itself. PwC, Amazon, KPMG, Goldman Sachs, UBS and Clifford Chance are just a few of the global names who trust Dan and the work of Young Professionals UK to identify and nurture the talent of tomorrow.

His flagship events have become essential dates in the calendar for both students and education specialists. Thousands attend the annual Young Professionals Conference, which brings major employers and future leaders together under one roof. These events have been staged at some of the country’s most iconic and high profile venues including the O2, proving the scale of Dan’s ambition and the remarkable reach he has achieved in such a short period of time. Alongside these large gatherings, Dan continues to run workshops in schools and colleges that ensure those who need support the most are never left behind.

Dan’s personal journey continues to motivate those who hear it. With no family network in the corporate world and no traditional route into business, he carved his own path and became a chief executive officer before the age of 25. By that same age, he had already earned his first million and laid the foundations for an organisation now known as one of the most impactful youth career initiatives in the United Kingdom. His success

has encouraged thousands of young people to believe in alternative career routes, backing themselves and believing that they are capable of achieving great things no matter where their story begins.

Today, Dan is increasingly recognised as a respected media personality and thought leader. His work has been featured in City AM, The Sun and The Mirror, while his insight is regularly requested at national conferences, business events, schools and universities. Whether he is interviewing employers, mentoring young professionals or addressing a crowd from the stage, Dan brings authenticity, excitement and a refreshing perspective that inspires audiences of all ages.

Charismatic, ambitious and deeply committed to creating real social mobility, Dan Millar represents the energy and confidence of a new generation of business leaders. His focus has always been on people. He believes in the power of potential and he continues to dedicate his career to helping the next generation unlock theirs.

Kennedy Davenport, the legendary performer known for her electrifying turns on RuPaul’s Drag Race and her dominance across the national pageant circuit, is stepping back into the spotlight with Pageant Queens: Our Story Behind the Crown, a groundbreaking new docuseries premiering this fall. Directed by Travis Stancil and featuring Michael Silas as Artistic Director, the 12-episode series brings together ten of the most decorated queens in drag history as they move into a luxurious South Florida mansion to compete for the title of “The Queen of Drag” and a $50,000 cash prize.

But Pageant Queens isn’t just another drag competition — it’s, as Stancil describes, “not a race, but a revolution.” The series replaces eliminations with collaboration, trading shady lip syncs for soulful storytelling as the queens work together to design their own pageant — from the judges to the scoring system to the final performances. Viewers get an unfiltered look at what life in drag really means: the artistry, the sisterhood, and the stories that fuel it all.

For Kennedy Davenport, joining Pageant Queens felt like a natural return to her roots. “I never really stepped out of competition — pageantry has always been my life,” she says. “That passion never left me. So when Travis asked me to be part of Pageant Queens — and mentioned there was $50,000 on the line — I said, ‘Okay, I’m in!’” She laughs, adding, “I even asked him, ‘You sure you want me to beat these girls like this?’” While the cash prize is enticing, Davenport’s motivations run deeper. Known for her grace under pressure and high-octane performances, she sees pageantry not as rivalry but as refinement. “When I hear the word revolution, I think of a battle — but I don’t see pageantry that way,” she explains. “It’s more of a friendly competition. Pageantry is built on camaraderie. We push each other to be better.”

That spirit of sisterhood defines the show. Unlike her Drag Race experience, where contestants met for the first time in front of cameras, Davenport says Pageant Queens felt like a reunion. “This time, there was already love and history between us — and that made all the difference. Bringing that energy under one roof made the experience even sweeter.”

The series’ cast is a veritable dream team of drag icons, holding more than 38 national titles from systems like Miss Continental, Miss Gay USofA, and Entertainer of the Year. “Being under one roof with so many veterans and legends who inspired my career was magical,” Davenport says. “I was excited to make new memories with them.”

Filmed across Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Wilton Manors, Pageant Queens also carries a deeper social resonance. Stancil deliberately chose Florida as the backdrop to send a message of visibility and defiance amid turbulent times for the LGBTQ+ community. For Davenport, who lived in Florida for eight years, the setting felt like destiny. “It was like walking into my purpose,” she reflects. “My calling has always been to entertain, inspire, motivate, and educate — and I’ll never stray from that. Florida was full of love, joy, and peace. Love is always the answer — especially in Florida’s LGBTQ+ spaces.”

As the series delves into each queen’s personal journey, Davenport says audiences will see a more intimate side of her life. “Most people already know the story of Kennedy Davenport because I’ve always been transparent,” she says. “But this show dives even deeper into why I do what I do — and it’s all rooted in my family. I take care of them, and that’s my driving force.”

Director Stancil describes the series as “a celebration of truth and perseverance,” a sentiment Davenport echoes wholeheartedly. “You can talk all day on Drag Race, but this show strips away the polish and shows us as we are,” she says. “My story isn’t fabricated — it’s real. And Pageant Queens captured that authenticity in one take.”

For Davenport, Pageant Queens isn’t just another stage — it’s legacybuilding. “Legacy is what you leave behind for people to remember you by,” she says. “Everything I do has to have meaning — why I did it and who I did it for. This show marks a new chapter, and I know it will hold a special place in my legacy.”

As for the $50,000 crown? Davenport smiles. “Winning would continue to solidify my place in the world and put a stamp on my purpose,” she says. “Being surrounded by people I love, competing, celebrating pageantry — it reignites that passion and reminds me why I keep doing what I do.”

The first ten episodes of Pageant Queens: Our Story Behind the Crown begin streaming this fall, with the two-part finale to follow.

majic

This Christmas, we’re treating our readers to a deliciously guilt-free indulgence. Majic Protein has made waves in the UK snack scene by creating dessert pots that taste like a treat but pack a serious protein punch. For fitness enthusiasts who don’t want to compromise on flavour while hitting their macros, these tubs of cookie dough-style delights are changing the game. We caught up with the founders to find out how their brand came to life, what keeps them motivated, and how their sweet creations can help our readers stay on track over the festive season.

Can you tell us how Majic Protein started? What inspired you to combine indulgent flavours with high protein?

Majic started pretty randomly during lockdown. I used to be overweight, and obsessed with my mum’s family cookie recipe (literally eating the dough raw). But I knew I had to make a lifestyle change and get healthier. I started a fitness instagram to document my journey and soon fell in love with the gym. But I hated the sweet treats and ‘protein’ snacks out there, nothing hit the same as the real deal. My best friend from school Ben also felt the same. So, together, we experimented with the family cookie recipe, and turned it into what it is todayMajic.

What began as 15 tubs out of my parents’ kitchen grew into a full-time business. Now we’ve got over 10,000 customers across the UK and ship hundreds of orders every week. It’s wild, but that same mission still drives us: to make protein feel like a treat, not a trade-off.

What challenges did you face when creating a product that tastes like dessert but still delivers on protein? It took years of development to get right and we are still improving recipes. Taste and protein have always been everything to us, both personally and for our customers. But over time, we saw people’s needs shift, so we adapted.

than regular cookie dough, vegetarian, halal, and many options are gluten-free. We’ve also worked hard to create cleaner ingredient lists, minimal preservatives, and even lower-calorie options. Listening to feedback and evolving with our community has been key.

and Rocky Road has quickly become a fan favourite.

We’ve got a new flavour dropping later in November that’s a little inspired by a certain viral green energy drink brand you

How do you choose your flavour combinations? Are there any fan favourites that stand out?

We let our community decide. They vote on new flavours, and some of the craziest ideas end up becoming the best sellers. OG Milk Choc Chip still takes the crown, but White Choc Chip has been flying since summer,

might recognise, and then December brings eight festive specials for the ultimate Majic Christmas.

Majic Protein has a strong online presence — how important has community and customer feedback been in shaping your products?

It’s everything. We’ve built this brand in public, showing the wins, the fails, the kitchen chaos, all of it. Our transparency has built real trust with our audience, and that’s something we’ll never lose and what sets us apart from ‘big protein’ out there.

We have our Majic Circle community who get early access, exclusive drops, and share honest feedback that shapes what we do next. Some of our best flavour ideas, collabs, and even copy have come straight from them. They’re part of the process as much as we are.

Your products are packed with protein — how do you see them fitting into a balanced diet for fitness enthusiasts?

Balance is everything for us. We don’t believe in restriction or guilt, food should be fun. Majic fits perfectly into a balanced diet because it gives you your protein hit while actually tasting like a dessert. Whether you’re a hardcore gym-goer or just someone who wants a better snack option, it ticks both boxes.

Many people struggle to find sweet treats that don’t derail their fitness goals. How does Majic Protein solve this problem?

We created Majic so people could stop choosing between taste and progress. Our tubs taste like the real thing but come with 26–50g of protein, low sugar, and none of the junk. It’s dessert that works with your goals, not against them.

suppliers who are the best in their fields.

We’re also starting to 3rd-party test all our recipes and products to make sure what’s on the label is exactly what you’re getting... unlike many other small protein snack businesses these days.

The festive season is notorious for tempting treats — how can readers enjoy Christmas indulgences while staying on track with fitness?

to life.

We’ve also got MJC, our clothing side of Majic, making a huge comeback with a multi-collection drop just in time for Black Friday. It’s not just merch... it’s actually cool clothing that you can pretty much wear anywhere, anytime - not just in the gym!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned as entrepreneurs in the health food space?

Are there particular ways you recommend enjoying your protein pots preor post-workout?

Post-workout is definitely our go-to, it’s the ultimate reward after training. You get your protein in and your sweet fix at the same time. But honestly, there’s no wrong time to enjoy it. A lot of people have it in the evening as their daily treat, and that’s the beauty of it... it fits anywhere.

How do you ensure your products are both indulgent and nutritionally beneficial?

The truth is, we prioritise quality ingredients and yeah, it breaks the bank sometimes, but it shows in the end product. We use high-quality lowersugar chocolate, premium whey blends, and back

Enjoy yourself. Seriously, it’s Christmas. One or two indulgent days won’t undo a year of progress. But we’ve made it easier to stay on track with our Christmas box of eight festive flavours in single-serve tubs (250–350 kcal, 26g+ protein each). You can enjoy all the nostalgia and flavour without feeling like you’ve totally messed up your goals.

Looking ahead, are there any exciting new products or flavours our readers can look forward to in 2026?

2026 is all about scaling and levelling up. We’re aiming to expand into retail, developing brandnew product lines beyond cookie dough, and bringing even more collabs and in-person events

Perfectionism isn’t it. Things go wrong constantly. Recipes fail, suppliers let you down, plans change, and you just have to adapt. The best thing we’ve learned is to stay transparent. When you’re honest about the journey, people root for you harder. Oh and always listen to your customers. Gather as much feedback as you can! Putting founder ego aside and understanding what they want is more important and has been key to our growth.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone trying to balance fitness goals with a love of sweet treats, what would it be?

Don’t restrict yourself. Find balance, not burnout. Swap and tweak what you can, but don’t cut out what you love, that’s how people fall off. Focus on consistency over perfection. Enjoy your food, enjoy the process, and remember...one off day won’t change your progress, but a healthy mindset will change everything.

And finally, how can our readers engage and try your products?

You can grab Majic directly from majicprotein. com - we restock every Sunday with the occasional surprise drop midweek. We’re also on TikTok Shop and stocked in select gyms and cafés across the UK, with more coming soon.

Follow @majicprotein on Instagram and TikTok and sign up for our Majic Circle email group, it’s where we share updates, exclusive drops, and a few behind-the-scenes moments from the journey.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

Have you heard of PrEP? Are you on it? If not, why not? Either way we would love to hear about your experience and opinion about it in this short survey. https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/BNL2BLF

Who are we?

Yvonne – Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Genitourinary & HIV medicine in Belfast Trust. Provides a weekly PrEP clinic at Crumlin Road Health centre and looks after people living with HIV, particularly those on Long-Acting Injectable treatment.

Carol – Consultant in HIV/GUM, leading the PrEP service in Belfast. I also run the QUB students Union walk-in clinic.

What is PrEP?

It’s a tablet you take before sex to prevent HIV infection. It can be taken different ways. The main ways people use it are daily (every day) or event based (relating to sexual activity), but it is best to talk to someone with clinical expertise to help work out what’s best for your activity

Background

FastTrack Cities is a global initiative focused on eliminating new sexual HIV diagnoses by 2030. Northern Ireland became a FTC region April 2024.

There are approximately 1,350 residents in Northern Ireland accessing HIV care. HIV is a long-term but manageable condition, and it is preventable. In Northern Ireland, Gay & Bi men remain the group most affected by new and late HIV diagnosis, and some of them have never heard of or accessed PrEP.

The number of new HIV diagnosis has been reducing in Northern Ireland and PrEP use has been key in achieving that reduction.

What are we asking?

The survey is completely anonymous; no identifiable details are collected. There is no way to link responses to individuals. Most people take around 8 minutes to complete. It is divided into two parts, one for those taking PrEP & the other for those not taking PrEP.

We are asking questions around people’s experience with PrEP. For those who have accessed it, if you are using it consistently and correctly, do you use it with every partner or do you self-select who to take it with? It will also provide insight into

knowledge, barriers and perception of risk of those who have not accessed PrEP.

This feedback is essential in planning service delivery & development, education & policy. It is only for those living in NI and please only complete the survey once.

Should everyone be taking PrEP?

If you are HIV negative, are having sex with gay, bi or transgender individuals, using Chems or selling / exchanging sex, then you should consider PrEP. If you are worried about your risk, have a discussion with your local clinic for advice.

There are lots of ways to prevent HIV when having sex. Firstly, it is important is to know your status by testing regularly. If you get a negative HIV result, you can then prevent it by using condoms, PrEP or Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) if there is any risk. Oral Sex is not a risk for HIV. Used consistently & correctly PrEP can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV by up to 99%

How do you take PrEP?

Event based PrEP is taken according to the rule of two: 2 tablets at least 2 hours before sex (can be 2-24hrs before) and then 1 tablet each day for 2 days.

Daily is taking 1 tablet every day, but can be started off with 2 tablets to ensure PrEP cover in 2 hours’ time.

A new injectable option has just been approved by NICE and is available for use in England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland is exploring this as an option currently. It is an injection into the muscle every 2 months. There also is another option pending approval, which is once every 6 months. Regular injections won’t be to everyone’s taste, but providing choice increases the number of people using prevention and this benefits all.

Are there any side-effects? Is it okay with my other tablets? How often do I need to attend clinic?

Both PEP & PrEP are very safe to take. Some people experience slight nausea, bloating or headache with the first few doses but these usually resolve quickly. Before you start and if continuing PrEP, you will require regular HIV, Hepatitis and kidney checks usually every 3- 6 months. Interactions with your other tablets and medications will be assessed before starting & at each review.

What happens if I miss a few tablets?

PrEP is extremely effective when used consistently. If you have missed 2 doses in a row, then your protective drug level has gone down & you should take 2 tablets again & wait at least 2 hours before any sexual contact. It is important to continue taking 1 tablet daily for 2 days after your last sexual intercourse before stopping.

What if I’m taking it event based & hook up with someone unexpectedly, can I take it when I get home?

If you have had sex and haven’t taken PrEP, we would advise getting PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis). This medication can be taken up to 3 days (72 hours) after sex without a condom, to prevent HIV. It is available in any Emergency Department or from GUM clinics as an emergency. The sooner you take it the more effective it is.

If you have PrEP available, take 2 as soon as possible AND access PEP.

PrEP should always be taken before sexual contact to be effective.

How do I get PrEP?

It is available in all 5 Health Trusts, in the Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) or sexual health clinics. In the Belfast Trust it is available by making an appointment and having an assessment visit. Details for each GUM clinic and how to access PrEP are available www.sexualhealthni.info

What if my HIV test is positive?

HIV is a treatable condition. Most people living with HIV are on 1 tablet a day and well. The treatment freezes or suppresses the virus so it is undetectable in the blood and body fluids. This means it can’t be passed on, we say undetectable is untransmittable or U=U. : www.rainbow-project.org/uu Please speak to someone if you have questions.

Is there protection for other conditions available?

There are vaccines to protect against Hepatitis A & B, HPV, Gonorrhoea and Mpox, and tablets (DoxyPEP) for Syphilis and Chlamydia. These are all available in GUM clinics free of charge. Please book in and ask.

If everyone who is sexually active knows their HIV status, assesses their risk and accesses PrEP or PEP as needed, we could prevent HIV transmission. Together we could get to zero new transmissions and everyone living well in Northern Ireland.

Alli Harding

Alli Harding Capturing the magic of storytelling

Alli Harding has long been a familiar face in Northern Ireland’s performing arts scene. As both an actor and a writer, her work brims with heart, humour and humanity, capturing the magic of storytelling in all its forms. This winter she returns to The MAC in Belfast with her latest festive creation, Jack Frost, a brand new production that promises to melt hearts while sprinkling a little seasonal sparkle. Ahead of opening, Ali chats with Daniel about her creative journey, her love of theatre and the frosty fun audiences can expect from her latest show.

Alli, many of our readers will know you as both an actor and a writer. Can you tell us how your journey in theatre began?

I started ballet classes at the age of 3! I continued dancing, tap mainly at a school called The Brenda Horner School of Dancing in Portsmouth where I was born. My brother was an excellent pianist so our house was always full of music. I performed in all the productions at senior school and then went to an A-level drama college called Highbury from the age of 16. I then auditioned for Drama School and got into Arts Educational schools in London 1982 - 1985 (many moons ago)! From there on leaving I got a year’s apprenticeship at The Birmingham Rep. So, this is my 40th year in Showbiz!

You have worked across various aspects of the arts. How does your experience as a performer influence your writing process? Experience is the key word. I have worked on many productions using many different skills: Shakespeare, Musicals, Actor Musician shows, comedy and straight plays. Actors have good imaginations so let that loose, sit down and write whatever comes out! Good research is also a key. Get to know your subject. After performing in 40 years worth of Christmas Shows you get to recognise a formula. The structure and storytelling process. Going to see other shows and knowing what works and what doesn’t. Listening to your actors who are performing the roles you have written. You feel it in your gut and heart if a scene isn’t working or moving the story along.

Let’s talk about Jack Frost. What first inspired you to tell this story, and how did the idea take shape?

I took last Christmas off and went to see most of the Christmas shows in Belfast. I wanted to bring a story to life that wasn’t the usual as in Cinderella’s or Sleeping Beauties. I wanted to find something different to bring to families this year. I thought about Jack Frost and it following on from the huge commercial success of Frozen. I did a story board with images, and Cameron Menzies (our director) and myself made a pitch to the MAC in January this year.

The MAC has become known for its imaginative Christmas shows. How does Jack Frost fit into that tradition, and what makes it stand out this year?

Well firstly I have a great team on board. Katie

Richardson has written a most beautiful and powerful score. Niall McKeever has designed a clever celestial set. Jennifer Rooney with brilliant imaginative choreography, and Cameron with his outstanding direction. Jack Frost is going to be magical, moving, and bring Christmas joy to the MAC this year. Something for everyone including the grown-ups. We also have a tremendous cast of Actors who can act and sing the roof off!

What can audiences expect in terms of tone, music and message from Jack Frost?

Katie has certainly written songs that you will be whistling on the way out, they’re uplifting, sad and funny. I hope the audience will go through a roller coaster of emotions when watching. Jack Frost has warmth and heart. It is about believing in yourself, finding your place in the world and fighting for the things that matter. Making the right choices and following your heart. Also, an epic battle for saving Winter!

Writing for a festive family audience can be tricky. How do you strike the right balance between fun for the kids and depth for adults? My main aim was to create magic for children, to create a story that would keep them spellbound. We have two comedic characters, Hoot the owl and Jon the snowman, who will hopefully make the adults chuckle too. We have also decided to use old school theatrical tricks and not rely too much on digital. For instance, instead of a snow machine we have a snow box in the flys that will be operated by hand. A simple but effective technique to create winter magic.

Can you tell us a bit about the creative process, from script to stage, and what it has been like collaborating with the team at the MAC?

The MAC team has been very generous with their trust. We have a very experienced creative team and they have basically let us get on with it. I started writing this piece in January when we got the go ahead and the script has probably gone through 4 rewrites. Collaborating with Katie on the lyrics has been great. I send her my ideas for the song and Katie makes them work by changing some to make them work musically so I have really enjoyed that process. She has created some real anthems, uplifting and strong. The script will have other changes too once the actors are on their feet and working through. It has to work for them, for their own creative journey.

As a woman shaping stories for the stage, have you found the local theatre scene supportive of new writing, particularly original works like this?

Absolutely yes. I have had nothing but encouragement and support. The Christmas show at the MAC is their only self-produced piece, so I feel very privileged to be trusted with this year’s production.

You have performed on stage yourself. Do you ever find it difficult to hand over a story you have written to other actors?

Not at all. Having been through the process as an

actor I feel lucky that I have the cast I’ve got. I trust all of them to do a terrific job.

What has been the most rewarding or surprising part of bringing Jack Frost to life? It was very interesting being on the other side of the casting process and watching people audition. You really want everyone who enters the room to do a great job, hearing people speak your words for the first time is quite emotional, and production meetings! I won’t lie, they are a little bit boring, but essential of course!

Outside of Jack Frost, are there any upcoming projects or stories you are excited to develop next?

I will be returning to the stage playing Lady Bracknell again in the new year for the Lyric Theatre’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest and after that an exciting new project for Kabosh Theatre Company. I am also working on publishing my brothers’ partners’ diaries. David Thompson and Alex Harding were founder members of Gay Sweatshop, a gaymen’s theatre group which started in the 70’s in London. Alex was the musical director and the diaries detail their lives throughout that time. It is a gay history of that era and really should be read. Alex also wrote Australia’s first Gay Musical called Only Heaven Knows which played at The Sydney Opera House and won numerous awards. He received The Human Rights award for his play Blood and Honour about the Aids epidemic. David was head of the Australian Arts Council, they lived life to the fullest, and were pioneers of the day. Alex was also a member and Musical Director of the gay troupe “Bloolips” under the leadership of the great Bette Bourne, which David managed.

Finally, what do you hope audiences, both young and old, take away from Jack Frost when the curtain falls?

I really want people to come away full of the Christmas spirit and have a cracking night out. To be transported to another place for an hour or so and leave with hearts full and happy.

Written by Allison Harding and directed by Cameron Menzies, Jack Frost transports audiences to a hidden town where frost glows and snow sings. Tickets for Jack Frost are available now through the MAC Belfast box office and website. With performances running throughout the Christmas season, early booking is recommended to witness this winter magic in all its wonderment.

HIV Positive Glimmers

World AIDS Day this year gave us a moment to take stock on HIV in Northern Ireland. We reflected on the realities people living with HIV continue to face, positive steps forward, and the work that still lies ahead to end new diagnosis.

Our top message is that HIV is still a thing in Northern Ireland in 2025. We still need to keep it on the radar and we must take deliberate steps to eliminate it.

HIV is a very serious health condition, with life-long consequences. As a sexually transmitted infection, it attracts the worst kind of shame and stigma, especially here in Northern Ireland. This is preventing people from talking about it, from getting tested, and from getting the life-changing treatment that supports a long and fulfilled life.

Most importantly, getting tested and accessing treatment prevents onward transmission: this is the only way we’re going to end HIV in Northern Ireland. Condoms are also non-negotiable in prevention of a host of other sexually transmitted infections, some of which are on the rise here (gonorrhoea or chlamydia, anyone??)

As we’ve highlighted before, we’re alarmed that HIV awareness here is declining, particularly among younger people aged 18-35. Knowing the health and psychological impact of a positive diagnosis, we cannot let this lie. We’re fighting hard to keep this issue on the agenda.

So we were pleased that the Department of Health recently confirmed that a new form of the HIV prevention medicine, PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), has been approved for roll-out in Northern Ireland. Rather than popping a daily tablet, this is an injectable form of PrEP (CAB-LA) which has a longer-acting two-month effect, making it much handier, easier to take and more discreet for many people.

The news of this new PrEP jab feels like a glimmer of hope arriving at the right time.

Taking Precautions with PrEP

At the Regional Sexual Health Conference in Belfast just weeks ago, we were pleased to learn that more people here are taking care of their sexual health by using PrEP. The survey showed 90% of those taking it are male, with 83% being GBMSM.

The research also showed that there is a close correlation between having a recent HIV test and taking PrEP. This is really encouraging to see: if you have a negative test, it’s important to look at how you can protect yourself in the future and PrEP is a very sound choice. Understand your needs and take steps to protect yourself – that’s smart thinking.

But the same survey also highlighted that 12% said they had found it difficult to get PrEP. And 10% had to access emergency PEP because they hadn’t accessed PrEP as a precaution.

So we’re hopeful that the new injectable PrEP will remove some of these barriers. We hope it will be sufficiently promoted and accessible for anyone who needs it.

Why Sexual Health Promotion Matters

Before we get too carried away with optimism, many people still don’t even know what PrEP is. A recent NI health survey showed that only 17 percent of respondents had even heard of it (and only 87% of those surveyed were aware of HIV).

The same survey revealed that fewer than one in three people know that someone on effective treatment cannot pass on HIV through sexual contact.

This U=U message remains one of the most powerful tools we have to dismantle stigma. HIV medicine fights the virus back to such low levels that it becomes Undetectable in the blood. At this low level, it can’t be passed on: it’s Untransmittable.

Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) is important to remember in the event that you, or someone you know or love tests HIV+. It is totally treatable. The key is to know your status by getting tested and to get on the meds.

Sexual health education must be a public health priority if we’re to win this battle.

At Positive Life, its Personal

Behind every statistic is a person experiencing something deeply personal. At Positive Life, we meet people who are newly diagnosed and trying to understand what life looks like now.

We meet people who hold their HIV status as a tightly guarded secret, cloaked in shame.

Our role is to make sure anyone living with HIV feels supported, informed and safe, not shamed or judged. We give people the space to talk openly, often for the first time.

We’re keeping our sights focused on ending HIV by 2030. Every step forward is inching us closer to this goal.

day fever

DAY FEVER IS COMING TO BELFAST

Belfast is set to dance as the UK’s favourite daytime disco, DAY FEVER, brings its vibrant party atmosphere to Ulster Hall on 28th February 2026. Known for transforming afternoons into unforgettable dance events, DAY FEVER offers wallto-wall feel-good tunes, nostalgic hits from disco, Northern Soul, indie, and the 90s, and an open invitation to dance like nobody is watching. Launched in early 2024 by actress Vicky McClure, filmmaker and broadcaster Jonny Owen, Jon McClure, frontman of Reverend & The Makers, his brother Chris McClure, and Sheffield businessman James O’Hara, DAY FEVER quickly grew from a WhatsApp idea among friends into a nationwide phenomenon. Its mission is simple: create a safe, inclusive space where people can let loose, laugh, and dance before 8pm, proving that the party does not need to wait until nightfall.

“It started as a WhatsApp idea,” says Jon McClure. “Jonny just said, ‘A daytime disco, how good would that be?’ We’re all a bit nuts, so we just said, ‘Come on then!’”

Vicky McClure adds: “It feels like a massive house party at your nan’s. No drama, no egos, just people acting daft, getting dressed up, and having the best time.”

DAY FEVER runs from 3pm to 8pm, offering a full-on party experience without impacting your weekend plans. There are no dress codes, no pressure, and no mandatory hangovers — just music, laughter, and dancing. Each city brings its own flavour to the party, with local DJs keeping the energy high and the crowd moving all afternoon.

The Ulster Hall event in Belfast promises the same inclusive, high-energy atmosphere that has made DAY FEVER a cultural sensation across the UK. From first-timers to seasoned clubbers, everyone is welcome to join the fun, celebrate together, and enjoy an unforgettable afternoon on the dancefloor.

Tickets for Belfast, 28th February 2026, are on sale now and expected to sell fast.

For more information and to secure tickets, visit day-fever.com. Stay up to date with news and announcements via Facebook, Instagram, and X (@DAYFEVERUK).

Get ready, Belfast, the party is coming, and the dancefloor is waiting.

From drag queen to fitness queen

A journey of transformation

After nearly fourteen years performing in drag, I found myself craving a transformation, not just on stage but in my everyday life. This is the story of how I decided to change my body, my mindset, and ultimately, my happiness.

Removing myself from toxic environments, focusing on my goals, and prioritising my wellbeing has given me a completely new perspective.

From Rock Bottom to Rebuild

Let’s break it down, Onya style. I went through a rough spell, one of those long and draining periods where I felt stuck and sorry for myself. Months passed before I finally reached the point where I thought, enough is enough. I was done being the victim and decided to take control of my life.

Finding Strength in Fitness

I have been going to the gym since 2018, but things really clicked when I started training with the fabulous PT Sharon Westerman at Gain Forth Gym in 2019. Sharon taught me everything, from proper form to confidence in the weights area. I trained with her until June this year, when I decided I was ready to go solo, though I will always credit her for helping to build my foundation.

The community at Gain Forth is incredible, friendly, supportive, and full of energy. In September 2024, I took a trip to London to see Wicked. I had an amazing weekend, but while I was there, something clicked. I decided it was time to take my fitness and body goals seriously. The moment I got home, I started tracking my food and planning my next move.

The Science of Weight Loss Without the Myths

Weight loss is often misunderstood. Many people believe exercise alone does the job, and while it helps, the real key is a calorie deficit.

Here’s the truth: if your maintenance calories are around 2,500 (mine are between 2,700 and 2,800), that is what your body needs to maintain energy. Drop around 500 calories, and your body begins burning stored fat. Go too low and you will crash, go too slow and it feels endless. The trick is to find a sustainable middle ground.

From September 2024 to March 2025, I focused on fat loss while continuing to lift weights. I tracked everything on MyFitnessPal. Thankfully, as a former chef, I knew how to make my meals taste good. I cooked big, satisfying meals with whole foods, loads of fruit and veg, and some

budget-friendly hacks like the one pound skinny noodles and rice from B and M, packed with fibre, which power bottoms looking to lose weight will appreciate.

In seven months, I went from almost fourteen stone to ten stone and four pounds. That is when I caught the fitness bug. I did not just want to be lighter; I wanted to be stronger.

Bulking Up the Smart Way

I love food, always have and always will. So how could I eat plenty without gaining all that weight back? The answer was a lean bulk and a focus on strength training.

I lift weights six days a week for about an hour, four sets of eight reps using hypertrophy-based training. Cardio is not for me. Apart from walking fifteen to twenty thousand steps a day, I do not do any.

During my lean bulk, I ate around 3,000 calories a day, which was a real mental adjustment after months of dieting. But it made sense. You cannot build muscle from nothing; your body needs fuel to grow.

I kept my protein high, my carbohydrates higher around workouts, and included healthy fats. They are essential, not evil. I also made rest a priority, seven to nine hours of sleep each night, ideally eight. Deep sleep is when your body recovers and grows.

After a few weeks, my mindset shifted. My body was changing, more definition, more muscle, and a much clearer headspace. Things that used to upset me suddenly felt small and unimportant. I reduced alcohol, kept my treats within reason following an eighty to twenty balance of wholesome food to indulgence, and started feeling confident in my skin again.

After four months, I decided to celebrate my progress with a photoshoot, my own little well done moment. I had built a body I was proud of, something I once thought was impossible.

Cutting for the Camera

The next step was the cut, the hardest phase of all. This part is really for those preparing for something specific, such as a photoshoot or competition.

Over six weeks, I gradually reduced calories from 3,000 to 2,300, and eventually down to 1,600 in the final week, not something I would

carbohydrates to eighty grams. Two days before the shoot, I stopped drinking water and raised carbohydrates to one hundred and fifty grams. This helped my muscles look fuller by drawing water into them.

On Sunday, 14 September 2025, I woke up at five in the morning, ate rice cakes (my trusty pre-shoot carb fix), and headed to Gain Forth for my shoot with the amazing Kris McGrath, one of the most professional and friendly photographers I have ever worked with.

Afterwards, I returned to maintenance calories, took a much-needed holiday, and then began my second lean bulk, now at 3,300 calories per day. My goal is to keep pushing until June 2026. I am excited to see where the next phase takes me.

The Mindset That Changed Everything

Slow and steady really is the secret. Your body needs time to adapt, and rushing the process only leads to setbacks.

This has easily been one of the toughest but most rewarding journeys I have ever taken. I learned how to make food work for me instead of against me. If I overeat one day, I simply balance it out the next with lighter, higher protein meals.

My plan is high protein and high fibre with a small calorie deficit. This balances overall weekly maintenance calories and encourages the body to process food efficiently, reducing bloating.

My advice this Christmas is to enjoy the festive season. Give yourself from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day to indulge guilt free, then hold yourself accountable. If you have overdone it, adjust the following week. Eat good, wholesome food, track your calories, and most importantly, enjoy yourself. You have earned it.

Your body will fluctuate throughout your life. What matters most is that you keep going.

A Healthier Body, a Happier Mind

After just over a year of consistent training, my mental health has improved dramatically. Removing myself from toxic environments, focusing on my goals, and prioritising my wellbeing has given me a completely new

perspective.

I wake up feeling happier, lighter, and more grateful than I have felt in years.

To anyone struggling, you can get through it. Sometimes taking a step back and focusing on yourself is the best thing you can do. The long-term benefits are worth it.

If I can achieve this, so can you. Do not be afraid to message me for food or training tips. I am not a professional, but everything I have done has worked for me.

Have a wonderful Christmas. Ho ho ho! Love, Stephen / Onya

GNI Awards 2025: A Night to Remember

On Saturday 15 November, the Grand Ballroom of the Crowne Plaza came alive with pride, colour and community spirit as the GNI Awards 2025 celebrated another unforgettable night honouring the people and organisations who uplift, support and inspire Northern Ireland’s LGBTQIA+ community.

Every year the awards grow, but this year felt especially meaningful. With almost 375 guests filling the room, a remarkable leap from the 100 people who gathered at our very first GNI Awards in 2016. The energy in the room was undeniable from the moment the opening performance by Conleth and Trudy set the tone for a night filled with music, laughter and heartfelt recognition.

During my speech, I took a moment to reflect on the origins of GNI. What began with a simple idea – a website created in 2010 to help LGBTQ+ people access trades and services without fear of rejection – has grown into Northern Ireland’s only dedicated LGBTQIA+ lifestyle publication. It’s a journey born from lived experience, resilience and determination to ensure no one faces the prejudice that sparked GNI’s creation. Sharing that history with the room felt important, especially as we stood surrounded by the very community that continues to drive our mission forward.

From leaving a secure career in mainstream media in 2015 to joining a niche and publication that was taboo to many, right through to expanding into the lifestyle publication we are today, the GNI story has always been one about taking risks and trusting instinct. Today, we reach over 72,000 people across print, online and social media. We feature national and international voices while staying loyal to our local roots through our brilliant columnists and community contributors. The magazine grows because the community grows, and because readers continue to place their trust in what we do.

This year’s awards were another powerful reminder of that support. Over 54,000 votes were cast in just ten days – a staggering number that reflects how passionately people feel about the finalists. Every nominee earned their place through hard work,

visibility, creativity and courage. To each finalist and winner, your contribution to LGBTQIA+ life here matters, and these awards are a celebration of everything you bring to Northern Ireland.

Of course, no event of this scale happens without an incredible team behind it. A huge thank you goes to our headline sponsor, Kremlin / Union Street Bar, whose unwavering support allows us to grow the event year after year. Our sincere thanks also go to every sponsor and business who donated prizes. Your generosity ensures that the GNI Awards not only survive but thrive, especially during a time when individuals, businesses and charities are all feeling financial pressures.

Seeing so many familiar faces alongside new guests reminded me once again why these awards exist. They are more than a night out. They are a space for joy, for celebration, for visibility and for reminding ourselves of the strength and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community here in Northern Ireland.

The room was filled with warmth, gratitude and that unmistakable sense of belonging that our community creates whenever we come together. Watching people cheer for their friends, colleagues and favourite venues made every late night, deadline and planning meeting worthwhile. It felt like a collective moment of pride, one we all shared in together.

As we look ahead to the next issue, the next event and the next chapter of Rainbow Mag NI, I want to extend my deepest thanks to everyone who attended, supported, performed, voted and championed this year’s GNI Awards. You make this celebration what it is.

Here’s to continuing the work, lifting each other up and shining a light on the people who make this community extraordinary.

Thank you for being part of an unforgettable night –and here’s to an even brighter year ahead.

We now look forward to the 10th Anniversary of the Awards which will be happening on 7th November 2026 - Get the date in your diaries

Merry Christmas

Happy Holidays! from our family to yours, Thank you for your custom in 2025

The 2025 GNI Mag Awards were a resounding success and a true celebration of talent, community and achievement. As a leading sponsor of this year’s awards, we were proud to be involved throughout the entire process—from working closely with Daniel during the planning stages to witnessing his dedication and meticulous organisation shine through on the night itself. His commitment and attention to detail ensured a smooth, engaging and memorable event, and we were honoured to stand alongside him as the evening unfolded.

The atmosphere was electric, filled with excitement, unity and pride as some of the most inspiring individuals and venues across the community were recognised. The night became even more special with two of our own performers taking home major awards—Trudy Scrumptious winning Drag Queen of the Year and Dylan Gibson receiving Entertainer of the Year. To then be awarded Entertainment Venue of the Year for Kremlin & Union Street was the perfect finale.

What Everyone Had to Say About the GNI MAG Awards

We are absolutely thrilled and incredibly honoured to receive the “Wedding Supplier of the Year award!” This recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion that our entire team pours into every single wedding we have the privilege of being a part of. We want to extend a huge thank you to all the couples who trusted us with their special day; your belief in us inspires us to constantly raise the bar and exceed expectations. This award motivates us to continue delivering exceptional service and creating unforgettable memories for every couple we work with. - Inspired Weddings & Events

A success from start to finish, the 2025 GNI Mag Awards highlighted the very best of our scene, and we are honoured to have been part of it.

Thank you, Brian and Richard at The Kremlin & Union St Bar

The Rainbow Project - “The whole team at The Rainbow Project were delighted to receive the LGBTQIA+ Charity of the Year award, in recognition of the work that we do as an organisation and that every single member of staff, volunteer and board member does throughout the year to improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ people and their families. It is undoubtedly a difficult time to do this work, and we couldn’t do any of it without the tireless work of our team and our colleagues in the LGBTQIA+ sector and wider civil society across Northern Ireland, and most importantly without our community standing with us in the fight for full equality.”

“The GNI Awards are a time to celebrate ourselves and each other, to come together with love and community, to build our energy for the long and hard fights ahead of us. Being around so many wonderful individuals doing such amazing work across different sectors and spaces in Northern Ireland was so empowering and uplifting, and it meant a great deal to have the opportunity to highlight the ongoing threats facing particularly our trans communities in this moment.”

Luke McKibben - Our videos began from a place of grief, not creativity. After losing my brothers Matthew and Barry, making silly clips with my mum became our way of coping and keeping each other going. We never expected those moments to reach so many people, but the messages from those who found comfort or laughter in our videos mean everything. This award isn’t just ours, it belongs to everyone who’s shared in that light with us.

“Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of Belfast Pride who have provided me with a platform to support our LGBTQIA+ community. I’m grateful to my employer, Cara-Friend, for giving me the opportunity to support our LGBTQIA+ young people in schools, ensuring their voices are heard, included and valued. To win the Motivation Award for doing something I love is incredible. Thank you to GNI for this award.” Gemma Kelly

‘Hosting and performing at the GNI Awards 2025 was a real honour. It felt incredibly special to be up on stage at this amazing event having won the ‘Entertainer of the Year Award’ in 2024. I was also thrilled to have shared hosting duties with my dear friend Trudy Scrumptious. Trudy and I go back 25 years - we used to perform together on the scene back in 2000/2001. I think that Gordon/Trudy is a real talent and they always had a wonderful artistic flair. I have watched their career blossom over the years. It was a very full circle moment to be back on stage together again - singing and hosting! I was delighted with the response to my performance of ‘A Little Respect’ from my upcoming Erasure EP. The crowd was electric. I was anxious about the evening having just lost my Mother 4 months ago. She accompanied me every single year to the GNI Mag Awards. It feels very strange to be in N. Ireland and not have her by my side. I know that she would have been over the moon to see me host and perform. I dedicated the entire evening to her. Congratulations to Daniel May, everyone at GNI and all of the nominees and winners. - Conleth Kane

Belfast Christmas Market

Gift Thoughtfully Making Christmas About Love Not Debt

The festive season can feel magical, glittery and wonderfully chaotic, but it can also come with pressures that leave us feeling stressed, financially stretched or simply exhausted. For many in the LGBTQIA+ community here in Northern Ireland, the idea of buying everyone the perfect present can quickly become overwhelming. This year I want to champion a slightly radical idea: gift only what you can afford and focus on thoughtfulness rather than price tags.

We have all felt it, the subtle and not-so-subtle push from social media, adverts or even well-meaning friends and family that the value of a gift somehow equals the value of the relationship. It is exhausting and frankly unnecessary. You do not need to go into debt to show someone you care. Financial strain during the holidays is stressful rather than festive. I have seen friends panic over last-minute shopping, spending hundreds on presents that are not quite right, only for them to be forgotten or exchanged a few days later. Mindful gifting is about intention, creativity and connection, not the cost of a gift.

One of the simplest and most meaningful gifts you can give is your time. Especially for LGBTQIA+ people who may live far from chosen family or friends, shared experiences are priceless. It could be a day out exploring a local attraction or festival, cooking a meal together with decorations and a festive playlist, hosting a cosy movie night with hot chocolate and fairy lights, or a long walk along the coast just talking and enjoying the moment. These gifts require little to no money but show thoughtfulness, care and presence in a way that no object ever could.

If you enjoy making things, there are endless opportunities to create personal gifts. Homemade treats like biscuits, jams or infused spirits presented in a personalised jar are always appreciated. Crafted keepsakes such as decorations, candles or photo collages that reflect shared memories carry a sense of love and time invested that store-bought items cannot match. Custom playlists or mixes especially meaningful if you have shared a lot of music together throughout the year are another simple way to create something memorable. These gifts become more than an object, they become a symbol of connection, a reminder of shared moments and something money simply cannot buy.

Sometimes buying a gift is necessary or wanted and that is fine. The key is setting limits early and sticking to them. Setting a budget for each person, making a realistic list of what is truly useful or desired, shopping local and supporting independent queer-friendly stores or creating vouchers for experiences such as a homemade spa day or an afternoon of board games are all strategies to keep gifting thoughtful and affordable.

Mindful gifting is not only about finances, it is about changing the narrative of Christmas from consumption to connection. In a community that has historically had to fight for recognition, creating celebrations that are meaningful, intentional and inclusive is an act of love and solidarity. It is also a chance to model values

for younger LGBTQIA+ people, showing that Christmas does not need to be defined by credit card bills or consumerism. Time, thoughtfulness and shared joy are gifts that last far longer than anything wrapped in glittery paper.

Imagine a Christmas where everyone focuses less on frantic spending and more on shared moments. Where a handmade gift carries more weight than a price tag. Where a walk, a cooked meal or a simple conversation becomes more treasured than the latest gadget. It is radical, it is freeing and it is deeply rewarding. This approach reduces stress, protects mental health and allows the festive season to remain joyful rather than financially draining.

This Christmas, let us make a pact: give what you can afford, give with intention and remember that the best gifts are often those that cost nothing at all. Whether it is crafting, cooking, gifting time or choosing a thoughtful purchase that fits your budget, these moments matter most. For our LGBTQIA+ community here in Northern Ireland, mindful gifting is a way to celebrate inclusion, love and chosen family without pressure. It is about connection, laughter and making memories that last far beyond the twenty-fifth of December.

So this year, do not worry about matching the latest trends or the size of your gift bag. Instead invest in moments, love and presence. That is a gift that never goes out of style.

Local Legends, Drag Royalty & Everyday Heroes

The festive season is a time for celebration, sparkle, and — let’s be honest — a little cheeky self-indulgence. And what better way to celebrate than by shining a light on the people who make our LGBTQIA+ community in Northern Ireland so extraordinary? From the queens who rule the stage to everyday heroes quietly making a difference, the “12 Gays of Christmas” are our festive cheerleaders, our inspiration, and our glittery role models.

Why Celebrate the Community?

Christmas is all about gratitude, connection, and joy — values that the queer community embodies every single day. Our nominated legends, performers, activists, and allies don’t just make our lives brighter; they make Northern Ireland a more inclusive, compassionate, and colourful place to live. This isn’t about awards or trophies — it’s about recognising the people who go above and beyond to uplift others, challenge prejudice, and celebrate queer life in every way possible.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to witness countless acts of kindness, creativity, and courage. Whether it’s a drag performer turning a nightclub into a sanctuary of laughter or a volunteer supporting LGBTQIA+ youth through a challenging winter, these heroes remind us that the heart of Christmas is generosity and love.

The Queens of Christmas Drag has always been central to LGBTQIA+ celebration, and during the festive season, it becomes even more dazzling. In Belfast and Derry, local queens host Christmas-themed shows, from cabaret extravaganzas to intimate performances in pubs and cafés. These events are more than entertainment; they’re community gatherings where chosen families come together, where laughter reigns, and where inclusion isn’t optional — it’s mandatory.

Everyday Heroes

drives, or create safe environments for queer youth to explore identity without fear.

Stephen, a volunteer at a local LGBTQIA+ youth group, explains, “During the festive season, some young people feel isolated or anxious. It’s a small gesture — a game night, a hot chocolate, a safe space to be themselves — but it can make all the difference. Seeing them smile and laugh is the real gift.” It’s this everyday dedication that embodies the spirit of the “12 Gays of Christmas.”

Allies Making a Difference

Celebration isn’t limited to those within the LGBTQIA+ community. Allies who step up to support inclusion, champion queer rights, or promote visibility deserve recognition too. From local business owners hosting drag brunches and donating proceeds to charity, to journalists amplifying LGBTQIA+ voices, allies strengthen our community and ensure it thrives. Christmas is the perfect time to shine a light on their efforts.

Festive Achievements in 2025

This year has been extraordinary for Northern Ireland’s LGBTQIA+ scene. Local drag performers returned to stages after years of disruption, queer theatre productions flourished, and community initiatives reached more people than ever. Highlighting these achievements in our festive countdown is a way to celebrate resilience, creativity, and collective pride. For instance, the Rainbow Project’s winter fundraiser brought together volunteers, artists, and local businesses to raise over £10,000 for LGBTQIA+ youth. Meanwhile, Belfast Frontrunners organised their annual “Run & Give Back” event, combining fitness with festive fun and charity work. It’s these moments that remind us the holiday season is about community, care, and shared joy.

The Lighter Side

for years.

Our “12 Gays” wouldn’t be complete without recognising the performers, artists, and organisers behind these moments. They don’t just entertain; they build connections, spark laughter, and remind us why Northern Ireland’s LGBTQIA+ community is resilient, vibrant, and endlessly inventive.

Looking Beyond the Glitter

Amid the laughter, costumes, and glitter, the underlying story is one of care and activism. Many nominees use their platforms to promote awareness, support charities, and advocate for inclusion. Whether it’s supporting queer youth, championing mental health, or fundraising for community projects, the impact of these individuals extends far beyond festive fun.

Christmas is a season of reflection, and celebrating the “12 Gays” is a way to acknowledge the work, the creativity, and the heart that keeps our community thriving. It’s a reminder that celebration and activism often go hand in hand — that joy can be radical, and care can be festive.

Closing Thoughts

As we deck the halls and dust off our glitter, it’s worth pausing to celebrate the people who make our community extraordinary. From drag royalty lighting up stages, to volunteers quietly supporting others, to allies lifting their voices in solidarity, the “12 Gays of Christmas” represent the heart, humour, and humanity of Northern Ireland’s LGBTQIA+ scene.

So this season, raise a glass — or a feathered fan — to the legends, heroes, and everyday champions who make our community shine. Their contributions, large and small, remind us that Christmas isn’t just about presents or parties; it’s about love, visibility, and shared joy.

Not all heroes wear glitter or heels. Some are quieter, just as impactful. Community volunteers, LGBTQIA+ support workers, teachers, and local business owners who go out of their way to create inclusive spaces deserve just as much recognition. These are the people who check in on friends during the holidays, organise charity

Of course, Christmas in our community wouldn’t be complete without a healthy dose of fun. From quirky fashion competitions (“Who Wore the Ugliest Christmas Jumper?”) to karaoke nights where every song somehow ends in a cheerfully exaggerated diva note, our community knows how to combine heartfelt celebration with outright silliness. These are the nights that create memories, inside jokes, and stories retold

Here’s to laughter, glitter, and unforgettable memories - the very essence of a Queer Christmas.

Festive Nights Out

The Ultimate LGBTQIA+ Christmas Guide to Northern Ireland

If there’s one thing that makes Christmas in Northern Ireland truly sparkle, it’s a night out with friends, chosen family, or that special someone. And let’s be honest — nothing says festive like glitter, cocktails, and the occasional impromptu dance-off. Over the years, I’ve discovered that our queer community knows how to celebrate with style, energy, and inclusivity. So, whether you’re a Belfast regular, a Derry devotee, or fancy venturing further afield, here’s your ultimate guide to festive nights out this Christmas.

Belfast: Glitter, Glamour, and Good Craic Belfast is at the heart of our Christmas celebrations, and the city’s LGBTQIA+ venues pull out all the stops. Start the evening with a festive cocktail at The Kremlin, Northern Ireland’s longest-running LGBTQIA+ nightclub. Known for its legendary drag shows and themed nights, the Kremlin always brings a little sparkle to December, whether it’s an outrageous Ugly Christmas Jumper night or a sequined showcase featuring local queens.

For something a touch more low-key but still fabulously festive, Union Street Bar in the Cathedral Quarter offers cozy vibes with twinkling lights and warm mulled wine. It’s the perfect spot to gather your chosen family before heading on to bigger celebrations.

Don’t miss Boombox for karaoke nights with a twist. Their “12 Nights of Karaoke” in December has become something of a local institution, offering both traditional carols and cheeky parodies that will have you laughing until your cheeks hurt.

Derry: Cosy Cabins and Christmas Cheer

Up north in Derry, queer-friendly venues like Euphoria Gym & Social Club are embracing the season with themed parties and community meet-ups. Whether it’s a festive workout followed by a hot chocolate, or a local drag cabaret with seasonal performances, the city proves that Northern Ireland’s smaller towns know how to do Christmas just as well as the capital.

The Guildhall Quarter is also home to bars and cafés that host Christmas markets, winter concerts, and queer arts nights. These spaces have a more intimate, communal feel — perfect for those who want to celebrate inclusively but away from the crowded city centre.

Inclusive Events Across the Province

Northern Ireland’s LGBTQIA+ scene isn’t limited to bars and clubs. Many events are popping up this year that combine fun, community, and festive spirit. For example, drag brunches are now a regular fixture across Belfast and Lisburn, often benefiting local charities like The Rainbow Project. Expect glitter, punchy performances, and a few surprises under the mistletoe.

For those who enjoy a bit of culture with their cocktails, theatres across the province are staging pantomimes and Christmas-themed shows with strong inclusive messaging. From Belfast’s Grand Opera House to smaller regional theatres, you’ll find performances that are both festive and queer-affirming. If live music is more your thing, check out seasonal gigs in Derry and Newry. Many venues host LGBTQIA+ artists, creating space for queer voices while keeping the holiday spirit alive.

Tips for a Safe, Fun Night Out

Planning your festive night out doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are a few tips to make sure it’s memorable for all the right reasons:

Book ahead — Many venues are expecting high demand this December. Tickets for drag brunches or pantomimes often sell out quickly.

Check accessibility — Northern Ireland’s LGBTQIA+ venues vary in accessibility. A quick call or online search ensures everyone can enjoy the night comfortably. Support local — Smaller, queer-owned bars and pop-ups often host the most intimate and memorable events. Your support helps these spaces continue to thrive.

Queer Christmas: Chosen Family, Chosen Traditions

The festive season has a way of sneaking up on you, doesn’t it? One minute you’re sweating through an October rehearsal or office deadline, and the next you’re standing in Tesco trying to justify buying another string of fairy lights because, well, “it’s for ambience.”

For me, Christmas has always been a mix of chaos, comfort, and just a little glitter — and as an LGBTQIA+ person living in Northern Ireland, that blend takes on a very particular flavour.

Finding Home, Making Family

For many of us, the holidays can be complicated. Not everyone has a biological family to gather around, and sometimes, the people you grew up with aren’t the ones you can really celebrate with. Enter the concept of chosen family — friends, partners, mentors, even pets, who become your constant, your support system, your own slice of home.

Over the years, I’ve learned that a Queer Christmas isn’t about replicating what the movies tell us “should” happen. It’s about creating

something that works for you. I remember my first proper Christmas in Belfast after moving back from a few years in London: my chosen family was an eclectic mix of drag queens, theatre friends, and colleagues from GNI MAG. We decorated my tiny flat with enough tinsel to make a department store blush, swapped handmade gifts, and ate far too much mince pie. It was chaotic, noisy, and absolutely perfect.

Local Traditions with a Twist

Northern Ireland has its own festive rhythms, from the bright lights of Belfast city centre to the cosy charm of towns like Newry and Derry. Many queer folks here have adopted their own traditions. Drag brunches at the city’s bars, secret gift exchanges among theatre troupes, or

late-night walks through lit-up parks — these become rituals that are uniquely ours.

Take Belfast Pride alumni Shane and Gerard, who now host an annual “Chosen Family Feast” every December. It’s a potluck like no other: vegan shepherd’s pie rubbed elbows with sausage rolls, and a cocktail competition that’s the stuff of legend. What’s extraordinary isn’t the food (though it’s amazing); it’s the way everyone leaves feeling seen, celebrated, and deeply connected. That’s the true spirit of Queer Christmas.

Giving Back and Sharing Joy

One of the things I love most about this season is how much generosity and activism come naturally. Many LGBTQIA+ groups in Northern Ireland use the festive season to give back: from toy drives organised by The Rainbow Project, to pop-up queer markets supporting local artists, to charities like Belfast Frontrunners hosting winter runs for community causes. These moments remind us that Christmas isn’t just about receiving — it’s about creating joy and supporting one another in a community that’s often had to fight for visibility and equality.

Even simple gestures make a difference. Last year, I joined a friend at a small local café in Belfast, where they were running a “Buy a Coffee, Give a Smile” initiative: for every hot chocolate purchased, one was donated to a local youth shelter. Nothing fancy, but the impact on the people who walked through that door was huge. This, in many ways, is what Queer Christmas is about — small acts of care that ripple out, making the season brighter for everyone.

Personal Touches That Make It Special

Of course, not all traditions are grand. Some are tiny, personal quirks that become rituals. For me, it’s the ridiculous Christmas jumpers, my annual attempt at the perfect roast potatoes, and blasting Kylie Minogue’s Christmas Collection while wrapping presents. My pets — fur babies, of course — get their own little stocking filled with treats, because for many of us in the LGBTQIA+ community, they are our children, confidants, and constant companions.

I’ve seen friends start little “Dragmas” traditions, where performers dress in their most over-thetop festive costumes and host themed parties for chosen family and local charities. Others hold movie nights, watching everything from Love Actually to The Nightmare Before Christmas, with snacks, cocktails, and plenty of laughter. Each tradition is as unique as the people creating it, yet all share the same core: love, inclusion, and connection.

Queer Christmas Across the UK & Ireland

While Northern Ireland has its unique charms,

queer folks across the UK and Southern Ireland are crafting their own versions of the season. London’s drag brunches, Dublin’s inclusive pub crawls, or Manchester’s LGBTQIA+ pantomimes — these events all feed into a shared festive spirit. Social media has made it easy to swap ideas, celebrate others’ creativity, and feel part of a wider queer holiday community.

Even when travel isn’t possible, there’s inspiration everywhere. Local cafés, independent shops, theatres, and venues are hosting Pride-themed Christmas events, giving us ways to celebrate safely and joyfully, without leaving our home cities.

Why This Matters

You might wonder why I go on about chosen family, festive quirks, and community initiatives. For those of us who have grown up navigating exclusion, invisibility, or misunderstanding, the holidays can feel challenging. Creating your own traditions isn’t just fun — it’s radical. It’s a statement that our joy matters, that our celebrations deserve visibility, and that we can carve out spaces where everyone feels welcome.

Being part of this community, especially at this time of year, is about reflection, connection, and gratitude. It’s about showing up for the people who have shown up for us all year, supporting queer businesses, attending LGBTQIA+ events, and being visible in ways both large and small. Queer Christmas is messy, joyful, heartfelt, glittery, and real — just like the community it celebrates.

Closing Thoughts

As the year winds down and the festive lights twinkle across Belfast, Derry, Newry, and beyond, my hope is that every LGBTQIA+ person finds their version of a Queer Christmas. Whether it’s a big feast with your chosen family, a small moment of giving, or curling up with your fur babies in a sparkling jumper, these moments matter. They remind us that love, laughter, and community are at the heart of the season — and that our traditions, whether inherited or invented, are worthy of celebration.

From my home to yours, I wish every reader a Christmas filled with joy, glitter, and the warmth of chosen family. Here’s to creating memories that last a lifetime, and to the many Queer Christmases yet to come.

Winter Wellness

Beating the Festive Blues

The festive season is often painted as a magical time of joy, glitter, and perfectly wrapped presents. And yes, it can be all of those things. But for many of us in the LGBTQIA+ community here in Northern Ireland, Christmas can also be complicated, lonely, or overwhelming. The pressures of family expectations, the strain of finances, and the relentless social media images of “perfect” celebrations can sometimes tip what should be a joyous season into stress, anxiety, or melancholy.

As someone who’s spent years reporting on our community’s highs and lows, I’ve seen the full spectrum of holiday experiences. And I’ve learned that prioritising your own wellness — emotionally, mentally, and physically — isn’t indulgent. It’s essential.

Acknowledging the Struggles

Let’s be honest: Christmas isn’t automatically magical. Some LGBTQIA+ people face exclusion from family traditions, judgment from those around them, or simply the sense that they don’t fit the mould of “traditional” celebrations. For others, the festive season can exacerbate mental health struggles that exist year-round, from depression and anxiety to loneliness.

The good news is that awareness and support are more visible than ever. Organisations like The Rainbow Project and local LGBTQIA+ community groups provide advice, spaces, and resources for people struggling during the holidays. From counselling to community events, the support network across Northern Ireland is expanding — offering both practical help and reassurance that you are not alone.

Creating Your Own Space for Wellness

One of the most powerful tools in navigating the festive season is creating your own space — both physical and emotional — where you can recharge. For some, this means taking a quiet night in with a favourite book, playlist, or movie. For others, it’s carving out time to meet friends for coffee, drag brunches, or walks in the crisp winter air.

Personally, I’ve found that having a small, intentional routine during the holidays can make a huge difference. Even ten minutes of stretching, journaling, or stepping outside to feel the fresh air can recalibrate your mind and body. Simple acts like these remind you that self-care isn’t selfish — it’s survival, joy, and resilience rolled into one.

Connecting with Community

Another key element of wellness is connection. Whether it’s through attending inclusive events, volunteering, or simply

catching up with friends over hot chocolate, human connection has a profound impact on wellbeing. Northern Ireland’s queer community thrives on these networks, from local queer sports clubs like Belfast Frontrunners to festive drag events and community meet-ups. These spaces provide belonging, laughter, and support — a crucial antidote to isolation.

During last year’s festive season, I joined a small community gathering in Belfast where friends shared stories, crafts, and seasonal treats. It wasn’t grand or glossy, but the warmth, acceptance, and laughter filled the room. Moments like that underscore why community is at the heart of wellness: it isn’t just about surviving the holidays; it’s about finding joy in connection.

Practical Tips for Managing Festive Stress

1. Set Boundaries: Don’t be afraid to say no to events, obligations, or even family visits that feel overwhelming. Your energy is precious.

2. Plan in Advance: Organising meals, gifts, or schedules early can reduce lastminute stress. Even a simple checklist or calendar can make a world of difference.

3. Keep Active: Physical activity is a proven mood booster. A short walk, a danceoff to your favourite playlist, or a gym class at an inclusive space like Dedicated Fitness or HENCH in Belfast can lift spirits and clear your mind.

4. Reach Out: Check in with friends, community groups, or support networks. Sometimes just talking through your feelings can ease tension.

5. Limit Social Media Pressure: Seeing curated images of others’ “perfect” holidays can worsen anxiety or comparison. Remember that social media rarely reflects reality.

Celebrating Joy Where You Can

Wellness isn’t only about mitigating stress — it’s also about seeking joy. For many in our community, this could mean attending festive queer events, decorating your space, or cooking your favourite seasonal treats. Small celebrations — the right lights, the right playlist, the right company — can lift your mood immensely.

Even the smallest acts of self-kindness ripple outward. A hot chocolate in your favourite mug, a call to a friend you haven’t seen in months, or helping someone else feel included can create moments of happiness that linger far longer than the Christmas tree lights.

Mindfulness

and Reflection

The quieter moments of the season are perfect for reflection. Looking back on the

year, acknowledging challenges overcome, and celebrating small victories can strengthen your mental resilience. For me, December often becomes a mix of looking forward to the holidays while also journaling, planning, and appreciating the community around me.

Mindfulness doesn’t need to be complicated. Even pausing to breathe deeply, notice the twinkle of lights, or savour a moment of warmth with a pet can anchor you in the present. For many LGBTQIA+ people, mindfulness during Christmas helps reclaim the season from anxiety and allows space for gratitude and joy.

Support Resources in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland offers a growing network of LGBTQIA+ support during the holidays:

• The Rainbow Project: Counselling, youth support, and mental health resources year-round.

• Out & Active NI: Inclusive sports and social groups offering community connection.

• Peer Support Networks: Local groups across Belfast, Derry, Lisburn, and Newry hosting festive events and meetups.

Engaging with these services isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a proactive step toward maintaining wellness and enjoying the season fully.

Closing Thoughts

Christmas should be a time of warmth, connection, and self-care — not stress, pressure, or isolation. For LGBTQIA+ people, it can be challenging, but Northern Ireland’s community, resources, and venues provide the tools, spaces, and inspiration to navigate the season successfully.

So this year, take care of yourself. Celebrate where you can, set boundaries where you must, and lean on your community when needed. Whether it’s a quiet night with your fur babies, a shared meal with chosen family, or joining a festive community event, every step you take toward wellness matters.

Here’s to a season filled with joy, acceptance, and a little glitter — because caring for yourself is the ultimate gift you can give.

Domestic abuse doesn’t stop at monogamy

Why this gap puts our community at risk

Domestic abuse can happen in any relationship. That includes relationships where people agree to be with more than one partner — open relationships, swinging, polyamory. These are not fringe lives anymore; they’re part of how some of us love and build family. But our systems still tend to picture one couple, one house, one neat story. When services don’t see your reality, it’s harder to be heard — and easier to be harmed.

I chose this topic after losing a friend, Jack. His death made me look harder at how power and control can hide behind the language of consent. My dissertation for Ulster University asked a simple question: do our systems recognise abuse in non-monogamous relationships — and do they respond well when someone asks for help?

What I found:

• The law already covers it. Abuse is defined by what someone does — controlling/coercive behaviour, violence, sexual assault — not by whether you’re monogamous. So the legal tools are there.

• The practice isn’t. Training, forms and hand-outs rarely mention non-monogamy. That sounds small, but it matters. If the paperwork and examples only picture one couple, officers and support workers may miss key details at the scene or during risk assessments — like multiple partners present, a partner’s partner (a “metamour”) who’s harassing, or group-chat and device access used to control someone.

• Stigma shuts people down. Many people don’t tell GPs or support services they’re non-monogamous because they expect to be judged. When you hide the structure of your relationship to avoid a lecture or a laugh, you’re also likely to hide what’s happening to you.

• Abuse tactics can look “consensual” from the outside. In healthy non-monogamy, people make agreements and boundaries. In abusive situations, those “agreements” get weaponised: forced “openness”, pressure to accept sex you don’t want, rules used to isolate, outing threats used to control.

• Networks cut both ways. More partners can mean more support — and more avenues for abuse. Think coordinated harassment by a partner’s friend, an ex controlling the WhatsApp group, or someone with access to shared calendars and keys.

• Northern Ireland evidence backs this up. Local research with LGBTQ+ people shows low levels of disclosure and poor follow-up when people do reach out. That doesn’t single out non-monogamy, but the pattern is the same: if you expect to be judged or misunderstood, you delay talking — or you stop after the first attempt.

So what needs to change?

The good news: we don’t need new laws. We need recognition, recording and response that match real life.

For the police (and other first-contact services)

• Say it out loud in training. Include non-monogamous examples in scenarios and case studies so officers know what to ask and look for.

• Ask neutral questions. “Are there any other partners or households we should be aware of for safety?” “Does anyone else have keys, device access or control of group chats?”

• Record the context safely. Add an optional “relationship structure” field with strong privacy safeguards. The aim is recognition, not judgement.

• Plan for networks. Safety plans should consider partners’ partners, shared devices/calendars, and who controls online spaces.

For LGBTQ+ charities and community groups

• Make space for us visibly. Posters, websites and helplines should include language that welcomes people in nonmonogamous relationships — not as a headline act, just as part of the picture.

• Train staff not to pathologise. The goal is simple: be curious, be neutral, and don’t assume “open” means “no jealousy” or “no abuse”.

• Create practical resources. Short guides on boundaries, red flags (like forced disclosure or sexual pressure “for the relationship”), and safety planning when more than two people are involved.

• Strengthen referrals. Build links with services that already understand relationship diversity, so warm hand-offs are easy.

Why this matters now

Domestic abuse makes up a huge amount of police and support-service work here. At the same time, non-monogamy is simply more visible than it was. When systems only picture one kind of relationship, people who don’t fit that picture slip through the cracks — not because the harm is different, but because the signals look different.

This isn’t about special treatment. It’s about seeing what’s in front of us. A few low-cost changes — clearer examples in training, a couple of neutral questions, a safe way to record context, and inclusive messaging — would help survivors be recognised sooner and kept safer, whatever their relationship looks like.

If you need support, you deserve to be met without judgement and with practical help. Everyone deserves to be heard and supported without having to simplify their life to fit others’ expectations.

Why I switched cartoon Pigs for Queer Ceramics

I’m Dickie and in my Belfast studio I make figurative ceramics that celebrate my love for anatomy, sport and queer culture. It’s been an exciting first year in business for me, I’ve sold more than 200 sculptures to collectors in over 10 countries. My work is stocked in galleries, shops and online, and this summer I was so excited to become a trader at the iconic St.Georges Market.

Ceramics is a bit of a reinvention for me as I previously had a two decade career in the animation industry on global hits like Peppa Pig. I loved my job but the pandemic changed the studio set up to remote working and I found it less rewarding to sit at a computer every day and not experience all the joys of being around a crew.

Away from animation I took ceramics short courses at the University of Ulster and I fell in love with clay again. The last time I sculpted was in my secondary school in Essex. I would make fantasy inspired creations in my art class, but now at Ulster I was channeling my life drawing and characterization from my animation studies.

Two wrestlers were my first creations, definitely inspired by seeing the event at the London 2012 Olympics. Rowers, swimmers and rugby players soon followed. I was eager to learn how to make duplicates of the figures I had sculpted so the tutors at Ulster introduced me to plaster press moulds.

My work isn’t overtly sexual but can sometimes lean towards the homo-erotic. I get inspired by

queer artists such as Jean Cocteau, Pierre et Gilles and Tom of Finland. At film school I made queer themed films that helped me find my own sexual identity, so in a way my ceramics are an extension of that. This film knowledge also comes in very handy when making my own promotional material for social media!

To make a new piece I will start scrapbooking and then start sketching, an idea may take a few weeks to take shape. Once the concept is set I will begin sculpting with clay. I tend to work in short bursts and come back to a figure over a period of time so I can see it with fresh eyes. Once finished a photo will go to the client for approval or a plaster mould is made. The mould making process is tricky and a multi-part mould can take a few weeks before it’s ready to use. Sculpts then go to the kiln and after first firing can be coloured and glazed. The next stage is to do a photoshoot with stills or video for promotional images, it’s then boxed and packed ready to ship.

I regularly get asked to make commissions and I love working on them. It’s a joy to share the creative process with a client and make something for them that’s so personal and meaningful. They require great thought, care and sensitivity. I’ve been commissioned to make family portraits with pets, sporting trophies and a few contemporary saints. It’s a great honor for me to have my work cherished in peoples homes.

What’s in store for the future? I’ve learnt so much this year and will keep experimenting and creating to find how to shape the business

moving forward. I’ve got ideas for new themes and sculpts that will hopefully connect and delight my followers and collectors. Come with me and share my passion for ceramics.

If you like the look of what I do or are interested in a commission send me a message or come down to St. Georges, I’m usually there on a Saturday. We can have a chat and you can see a range of ceramics, prints of my drawings or greetings cards of my work. You can also find me on facebook or instagram.

Sauna is a bold and intimate reimagining of Romeo and Juliet that delves into themes of love, belonging, and identity within Copenhagen’s queer community. At its heart is the story of Johan, a gay man yearning for connection, and William, a trans man navigating the early stages of his transition. What begins as a Grindr hookup evolves into a profound bond that both heals and challenges them, set against the charged, transformative backdrop of a gay sauna.

“I had never seen a love story between a trans gay man and a cis gay man before,” says director Mathias Broe, who was eager to bring fresh perspectives to queer cinema. The film grapples with the universal questions faced by LGBTQ+ people, while also reflecting Broe’s own life— his real-life partner began transitioning during the making of the film.

We sat down with Mathias Broe in his Denmark home to learn more about the journey behind Sauna.

Sauna is your debut feature film, and it’s already groundbreaking as the first Danish film to cast a transgender actor in a leading trans role. What did it mean to you personally to be able to bring this kind of authentic representation to the screen? It means a lot to make space for the life of people that are close to my heart. It’s always surprised me how little representation queer people have in cinema history. It’s my ambition to present my friends and characters from my community to the big screen.

The film is adapted from Mads Ananda Lodahl’s book. What drew you to his story?

I fell completely in love with the characters in the book as well as the portrait of underground Copenhagen that Lodahl depicts. As a queer man in Denmark, I related to it.

It tells the story of a gay cis man and a trans man who fall in love. At its heart, the film is about Johan and William’s plea to understand one another. In relationships, people often project their own ideas onto the person they love and it becomes about them and not the partner. Many of us lose ourselves in trying to please rather than actually seeing what’s needed. We need to learn to listen to the true needs and boundaries of our loved one. I’ve made that mistake.

You’ve shared that your own partner began transitioning while you were making Sauna. How did that experience influence your understanding of William and Johan’s love story?

My partner and I used to do everything together. When she began her transition, suddenly there were spaces she didn’t feel comfortable coming to. There were also new ones that opened up to her, where I couldn’t join. It was a big change in our lives that seemed to blend in with the portrait of William and Johan.

What was it about Nina Rask that made you confident they were the right choice for the role of William?

Nina really brought an undeniable charm and handsomeness that we needed for the role of William. William has his guard up to protect himself in the process of self- discovery, so we needed an actor who could soften the character. Because Nina is a comedian as well, it contributed to a more accessible character.

Magnus Juhl Andersen stands out as Johan, and the chemistry between him and Nina is undeniable.

When casting for Johan and William, first and foremost, we needed to believe their chemistry. When we paired Nina with Magnus, they felt like lovers and not brothers. Magnus has a vulnerability that makes the audience want to explore his intentions.

The gay sauna serves as both a place of intimacy and rejection in the film.

The book’s writer, Mads Ananda Lodahl, used to work in a gay sauna, so the sauna comes from his life.

As an arena, I felt like it was a very cinematic location, because it also works as a separatist and space that is hard to enter. It becomes a place of desire and a home for Johan. For William it’s an opportunity to explore his identity and sexuality, but it’s also a risky place where he’s put in a very vulnerable situation and this becomes a catalyst for understanding the core of the film.

The film doesn’t shy away from addressing transphobia and prejudice within the LGBTQ+ community itself.

Isn’t it interesting how much transphobia and prejudice there is within the LGBTQ+ community? It’s very counter intuitive in terms of the core political struggle we all face. We wanted to put up a mirror to show the hypocrisy.

What conversation do you hope the film sparks among audiences? If we don’t fight for one another’s rights, we’re just being dicks.

Exactly. It’s important to keep the unity in community.

I hope the film opens a space for curiosity and empathy. Not only within the queer community, but to a broader audience that may not typically move within queer spaces. By watching ‘Sauna’ and seeing people that they don’t normally see on screen be intimate, human and relate with one another, I hope audiences will be more accepting and open to breaking the boxed limitations that we set for ourselves.

Sauna is available to rent or own on all major digital platforms.

It’s Union Street bar, but not as we know it!

I’m a Union Street regular, have been for around 15 years now - and I can honestly say I love it! For me, coming out a bit later in life, it was my local, a place where I went and spotted the same familiar regulars, bar and door staff. It was a space which helped me find my way on Belfast’s gay scene. I watched as the bar changed once covid arrived and what happened in it’s aftermath - and it actually saddened me. What was once the heart of my community seemed to have lost some of it’s passion. But I stuck with it, at it’s heart it still had that old Union Street vibe.

So I watched and waited over the past couple of months as the refub was taking place. It was so good that it finally seemed that someone wanted to make Union Street great again. The new owners were making an investment in me, in our commuinty, providing us once again with a venue to be proud of! And boy did they deliver!

I had my first outing in the new bar last Friday night. Now, I’m a fan of a chandelier anyway, and bejezus does this place have a chandelier or 70! F**king stunning!!! Completely rethought and redesigned, stylish, upmarket, welcoming, and the place was buzzing. I’d shared stories on my socials and people were messaging me asking was I in the Merchant Hotel, or the Ivy - that’s the kind of vibes Union Street is giving off. As I sat there in awe of the new surroundings I pondered, it was literally like someone took the best of Union Street, the great bar staff and bouncers (shout out to Stuart and Chris), and all those familiar regualr faces, and loads more, and just transported them to this amazing new space.

Take it from me, UNION STREET BAR is back on form. Amazing spaces, check out the new Soho Loft Bar, and the revamped Roof too! Entertainment is top notch from Queens who know how to put on a show to DJ’s (go Granny Dee) that keep the anthems pumping.

In short, RUN, DON’T WALK to Union Street, if you don’t like it, that’s on you because this place does nothing but amaze. The heart of our social community is back for all us old regulars, and brilliantly welcoming to all those coming behind us. Oh it almost brings a tear to my eye.

Winter Weddings That Warm the Soul

There is something undeniably magical about a winter wedding. Perhaps it is the soft hush that seems to settle over the world once December arrives. Perhaps it is the way fairy lights can turn the plainest room into a scene worthy of a festive film. Or perhaps it is simply the unbeatable charm of celebrating love during a season already filled with gatherings, glitter, and grand excuses to dress up. Whatever the reason, winter weddings have become more popular than ever and for good reason. They offer romance, creativity, and an excuse to lean fully into drama in the best possible way.

If you are planning a winter ceremony, the first thing to embrace is that winter weddings do not play by the usual rules. Summer brides, grooms, and glorious in betweeners boast sunshine, cocktails, and the ability to stroll around in linen. Winter couples get atmosphere. Winter couples get candlelight. Winter couples get the chance to transform even the simplest venue into a world of sparkle. A winter wedding invites you to be bold. Think luxurious textiles, rich colours, seasonal

scents, and more lighting than a West End curtain call.

One piece of advice that many couples forget until it is too late is to plan for the cold. This may sound obvious but you would be amazed at how often people underestimate the December breeze that sweeps through Northern Ireland with the determination of a relative who refuses to leave the party. Whether your guests are wearing suits, gowns, jumpsuits, kilts, or creative queer couture, no one wants to shiver their way through the photographs. Provide blankets for outdoor moments, choose a venue with a roaring fire, and always remember that nobody has ever complained about a mug of something warm while waiting for the speeches to begin. In fact, a hot drinks station is one of the easiest ways to delight guests. Mulled wine, creamy hot chocolate, festive cocktails, or even a simple tea corner adds comfort and charm.

Speaking of comfort, winter food can be one of the highlights of the day. While summer couples worry about salads wilting and ice cream melting, winter couples can embrace hearty favourites. Think rich soups served in espresso cups, roast vegetables, seasonal seafood, warm puddings, or even a late night snack bar filled with festive treats. The colder season allows for indulgence, and guests will thank you for it. Besides, a well fed guest is a happy guest and a happy guest is far more likely to dance.

And on the subject of dancing, musical choices take on a new dimension at this time of year. You can lean into festive music without turning your reception into a full Christmas party. A string quartet playing gentle seasonal classics creates a gorgeous atmosphere before the evening fun begins. Or if you want something more unique, winter allows you to choose songs with cinematic drama. A sweeping ballad feels even more powerful when the world outside is crisp and cold.

Fashion is another area where winter weddings shine. Velvet suits, jewel toned dresses, dramatic capes, faux fur wraps, embroidered boots, sequinned gowns and sharp tailoring all look incredible when the backdrop includes frost, fairy

lights, or even the possibility of snow. Winter also lets couples choose bold colours that would feel too heavy in summer. Deep emerald, midnight blue, rich burgundy, even metallic gold and silver are all perfect choices. And for couples who want something a little different, winter gives permission to be playful. Pinterest is full of inspiration but the truth is that winter fashion works best when it reflects your personality. Go dramatic. Go queer. Go elegant. Go extra. It is your day, so lean into joy.

For décor, winter gives you options that are both affordable and visually striking. Candles and lanterns are your best friends. They soften everything and create instant romance. Evergreen branches, pine cones, berries, and seasonal flowers add natural texture without costing the earth. If you want a statement moment, consider an archway made entirely from winter foliage or a dramatic display of candles in glass cylinders of varying heights. And of course, fairy lights. Always fairy lights. There is something wonderfully childlike and hopeful about them and winter is the one season when nobody will judge you for going slightly overboard.

Finally, remember that winter weddings are about warmth as much as style. This is the season for love stories shared by a fire, childhood memories revived through favourite songs, and the collective feeling that life is brighter when people gather together. Winter weddings may require a little extra planning, but they reward you with unforgettable atmosphere, emotional depth, and photographs that look like something from a storybook.

If you are walking down the aisle during the festive season, you are choosing a moment filled with symbolism. Winter teaches us that even the darkest days can hold beauty. It reminds us that togetherness is powerful. And it proves that love does not care what the weather is doing outside. Love simply glows, even on the coldest day.

BIG DAY >>>

So tell us how you met, were you single for a long time before you started dating?

Susan: We met 8 1/2 years ago when I was working part-time as a fitness instructor/ personal trainer. I was teaching a dance fitness class in a church hall and Victoria joined the class. Right from the start we clicked as friends and she is a fabulous dancer so we had lots in common! Our friendship grew and it was about a year before we realised we were more than friends and started dating.

Victoria: In 2017 I was searching online for a FitSteps class to attend in Belfast and two results came back. One, in the city centre and one more local to me. One was more expensive than the other and I, obviously, chose the less expensive option. The instructor of the cheaper class was Susan! I think in the end it worked out very well for me!

How long after you started dating did it take to pop the question, was it an immediate yes ? And who asked who?

Susan: We were just short of our 6th year anniversary when Victoria surprised me on a beautiful evening at Ballycastle beach where we were watching the sunset with our dog, Finlay. While we had talked about getting engaged it was truly a surprise! With no nerves showing at all, Victoria proposed with an absolutely perfect ring she had designed and it was of course an immediate yes from me!

Victoria: I proposed on 27th April 2024 on the beach in Ballycastle. I had the ring for around six months but never found the right time. On a whim we decided to go to the beach and I put the ring in my pocket. We were casually talking while watching our dog Finlay prance about in the sand and I asked Susan when we get married, if he could carry the rings in for us. Susan wasn’t too fond of the idea and

Its your day so have it your way!

I followed with ‘We’ll he managed to bring this one here today…’ and produced the ring from my pocket. Susan gave an immediate ‘yes’.

Tell us about your BIG DAY, location, amount of guests etc.

Susan: We wanted to have a venue that had it all - history, uniqueness, connection for us and crucially, somewhere we could feel comfortable totally being ourselves. We attended a wedding showcase at the Ulster Museum at Botanic Gardens and that was really the only place we considered after that! Our ceremony was performed by one of our dear friends, Darren, and he brought a fabulous energy, fun and tonnes of emotion to the proceedings! We had just over 80 guests and it was a wonderful blend of our closest friends and family. The Belfast Room was a beautiful location for the ceremony - intimate and with a unique style that suited us perfectly, while the atrium of the museum really is extraordinary as a reception and party venue!

Victoria: Our big day took place the Ulster Museum in Belfast on Saturday 28th June 2025. We had 82 guests, all our closest family and friends. We wanted a neutral location which the Ulster Museum was perfect for. We had our ceremony in the Belfast room followed by dinner and evening reception in the main atrium. The venue was perfect and we could not have asked for more.

What about the food and drink?

Susan: Craft Event Co were our caterers and as they work so closely with the Ulster Museum on events it was all very seamless for us! We served cocktails and sandwiches after the ceremony which kept everyone going until dinner! For our meal, we enjoyed a fresh summer bruschetta to start and offered a choice of sea bass or slow cooked beef. Instead of dessert, our wonderful cake maker, Triple Shot, designed fabulous wedding cakes for each table.

Victoria: Food and drink was provided by Craft Event Co. We met head chef and owner Jamie at a wedding fair in the Ulster Museum and didn’t consider any other company. The range of food and drink choices were second to none. Correspondence was fantastic and tasting incredible. We still get comments from people raving about the food!

Were there any hiccups or did all go to plan?

Susan: No hiccups at all! Everything went very smoothly!

Victoria: No hiccups that I know of!

Have you been on or are you going on honeymoon?

Susan: We went on honeymoon a few weeks later with two nights in Rome followed by a cruise to Italy and Croatia with Viking Cruises to

give ourselves a bit of luxury after the craziness of the wedding planning! It was so relaxing and great to spend time together - and not have to talk about menus or guest lists!

Victoria: We went on a Viking cruise around Italy. From Rome to Venice. It was lovely to get away and relax together and even more so as our first holiday married!

In your daily lives what do you do for work ? What interests do you share and have that are different ?

Susan: We’re both civil servants and we really love our time off together! We love enjoying Belfastwhether that’s taking Finlay for walks at Titanic or Cave Hill as well going further afield for beach visits. We love a good catch up on the sofa with a cuppa tea and a brownie, there’s a lot to be said for quiet nights in - talking about everything and nothing in equal measure!

Victoria: Susan and I are both civil servants. We both love to watch crime documentaries, walks with Finlay and checking in with each other on the sofa with a cup of tea and a brownie. We don’t have too many differences but Susan has an interest in American politics and I follow a lot of sports.

Do you do everything together in terms of socialising, travel ?

Susan: We love a weekend away and while we enjoy city breaks in new places, we really adore staycations in Belfast! We love being together and we choose to do most things together as well, we chose each other and I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather spend all my time with!

Victoria: There’s no better place for me to be than beside Susan. Unless we have plans with friends (which are usually arranged months in advance due to schedule clashes!) we’re usually together.

Have you a family, is this something on the plan for you?

Susan: I have three teenage children and Victoria plays a significant role in their lives and is a fantastic role model for them. She’s particularly close with my youngest and watching their relationship develop over the years has been so special. Our family grew when we got Finlay two summers ago and we have promised him a puppy brotherbut I think that will be the lot for us!

Victoria: We have no plans for a family, Susan has three lovely boys, but we do have our little fluff ball Finlay together. (Hopefully he’s getting a furry brother next year!)

Tell us who made your day possible in terms of rings, flowers, photographer, cars etc Susan: It was so important to us to work with LGBTQ vendors where possible and we loved everyone that made our day so special! Alongside Darren Handy, our amazing celebrant, we selected some other very special LGBTQ vendors - Honey and the Moon Photography, She Makes Movies as videographer and Rachel Toman for our ceremony and cocktail hour music. I loved Rebecca Bryson for my makeup and Margaret at Paul Carlin Hair to give me a glam makeover and Mary-Rose McGrath designed my jumpsuit with a fabulous cape! Our amazing faux-flowers were by Anna Foy of Beyond the Door and Music Matters provided the music to keep us dancing all night!

Victoria: We had an amazing team of people who made our day, not

only possible, but stress free. My suit was from The Cut Tailoring and Susan’s outfit was made by Mary Rose McGrath. Photographer was the wonderful Jess from Honey and the Moon. She makes movies videoed our day and made us feel really at ease. Triple shot cakes made all of the cakes for the day (we had a cake on each table for our reception). Beyond the door provided the flowers, table decorations, welcome sign, button holes and Susan’s corsage. Hair and make up was provided locally by Geraldine McGuigan hair and beauty as well as Paul Carlin Hair. Rachel Toman was our musician on the day for our ceremony and drinks reception blew us and everyone else away with her voice. Our very close friend Darren Handy performed our ceremony for us and although it was personal and he told our story, he made us feel incredibly comfortable and reminded us to breathe a few times too!

Has anything changed since you said “I Do”?

Susan: Victoria and I knew really early on in our relationship that we wanted to get married. In fact - the day I told my parents we were together I told them I wanted to marry her! When you meet someone that is perfect for you and everything falls into place, you can’t help but want to start planning a life together. So I don’t think there’s been any big outward change in us since our big day. However, the quiet knowing of being able to walk down the street together knowing we are married - wife and wife - is incredibly special. We are so proud of the life we have built together

so far and are excited moving forward as we continue to plan our future!

Victoria: For me, I get a massive kick out of saying ‘my wife’.

Anything else we may have missed that you may want to add/mention ???

Vicoria: Our wedding wasn’t a ‘gay wedding’, it was just a wedding with people we love and people who love us, celebrating us getting married. We chose suppliers and companies who were either LGBT themselves or huge allies. We chose them because we didn’t want to be judged and we didn’t want awkward questions. We just wanted to be Susan and Victoria going through what any other couple goes through when organising their wedding. We got that in abundance with everyone who helped us with our day and I can’t thank each and every one of them enough.

Gig of the year... and gigs for next yer

I often get asked what my gig of the year is, which is such a difficult question for me, as I am very fortunate to see quite a few gigs every year on both personal and professional basis. Every gig brings something different to the table for me, whether that is superb live vocals, dance/stage presence, immersive live experience or the nostalgia effect.

This year, it would be a toss-up between Katy Perry’s Lifetimes Tour for its live vocals and immersive live experience, and Texas at CHSQ for its pure nostalgic live vocals, which had me reminiscing on so many life events through each track.

Next year’s gigs and festivals line-ups are already being announced, and I am convinced they are being announced earlier and earlier every year, but there are some wow gigs already announced:

Bon Jovi is finally coming back to Dublin with his Forever Tour. He will be taking to the Croke Park Stage on Sunday, 30th August, seven years since he last played the RDS in Dublin. This is a gig of a lifetime and the first time he has toured since his vocal cord surgery. Here’s hoping he sounds bigger and better than ever.

Lily Allen was announced at the Saturday headliner for this years Mighty Hoopla where she will be performing her new album West End Girl in it’s entirety which will be interesting given the album runtime is 44mins, heres hoping she will throw in some of her classic hits like my personal favourites “Smile,” “The Fear” and the total anthem “Fuck you.”

Top 5 modern Chrimbo tunes that missed the No.1 spot

Underneath the Tree - Kelly Clarkson: Only made no. 12, which is an absolute travesty for this jazz big band festive Christmas pop song!

You’re Christmas to me - Sam Ryder: No.2 after a battle with Wham’s Last Christmas, which finally made the no.1 spot after an eternity in the Christmas charts, you could lose out to worse, Sam!

One More Sleep - Leona Lewis: A no.3 for Leona, but has become a modern Christmas classic, charting every year since 2013.

Santa Tell Me - Ariana Grande: No.8 for the wicked star, but like Leona, it has re-entered the UK Christmas charts for 8 consecutive years, here’s to many more!!

DJ Play a Christmas SongCher: No.18, no self-respecting queer columnist could leave Cher off their list. A little party number to get down to with your gals, gays, and they’s.

Books

I’m hoping will appear in my

Christmas stocking...

Anyone who knows me well enough knows I love a good celebrity autobiography, and like every year, the celebs release books on the run-up to Christmas in the hope of topping the Christmas book sales. Here are two books I think we should all get behind:

Mutya Buena: Real Girl The Explosive Autobiography: She was only thirteen when she became one third of the original line-up of the iconic girl band Sugababes, this is the story of the girl the tabloids never saw, with the real highs, the real lows told in her own words. Unflinchingly honest, Real Girl takes us through the highs of a spectacular career and the lows that came with a life in the limelight. For the first time, Mutya opens up about the struggles she kept hidden from the public eye when her life began to spiral out of control.

Cynthia Erivo: Simply More; A Book for Anyone Who Has Been Told They’re Too Much: It is never too late to build the life you’re seeking. Part-memoir, partinspirational manual for better living, Simply More by Cynthia Erivo is for anyone seeking greater harmony and fulfilment in their lives. In this profoundly honest and moving memoir, Cynthia draws from her experiences running marathons, both real and metaphorical, on stage and on screen, to show how each challenge can help us. Through personal anecdotes, lessons and advice, she urges readers to lean into the wisdom of their bodies and to understand and strive for a physical and mental balance. Because when we chase our deepest desires, each small step leads us closer to where we want to go.

Christmas Vinyl Review:

Girls Aloud: Christmas ‘Round At Ours

Girls Aloud have given fans the ultimate Christmas treat with the release of a reimagined Christmas album! The album boasts a delightful mix of four classic Christmas covers, including the iconic “Jingle Bell Rock,” alongside four original Girls Aloud tracks, all crafted by the talented Xenomania team. It’s a joyful nod to those early days when the girls were in festive overdrive, recording it in just a week!

EP Review:

Get ready to rock, because Aerosmith and Yungblud have come together for an exhilarating collaboration that has blown my mind! This much-anticipated EP marks Aerosmith’s first new music in over a decade. Surprisingly to some, I am an Aerosmith fan ever since a friend played “Dude looks like a lady” in the car to me way back in the 90s.

David Guetta, Teddy Swims, Tones & I - Gone, Gone, Gone: this trio have made the perfect blend of house, dance-pop and soul - those vocals are insane!

Katy PerryBandaids: I don’t understand the hate for this song, it’s deep and powerful and written in only the way KP could write it…..from the heart!

Bastille - Save My Soul: 3 years since their last release, striking a balance between introspection and vulnerability, along with euphoria and celebration

Melanie C - Sweat: Back to her danceoriented sound inspired by her youth rave scene and love of being active…..the perfect gym tune!

Leigh-Ann, Rvssian - Friends: Now an independent artist releasing what she wants to release under her own terms, absolutely love this R&B, Caribbean sound she’s producing.

There is a charming video for “Not Tonight Santa” featuring previously unseen footage that adds a heartfelt touch, especially as we remember Sarah’s passing in 2021. With album artwork celebrated at the National Portrait Gallery, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic about the entire package. This isn’t just an album, it’s a festive experience that invites you into the Girls Aloud Christmas party. Grab your eggnog and enjoy!

The lead single, “My Only Angel,” has a breathtaking video that perfectly captures the vibrant energy of both artists. The EP includes four brand-new tracks co-written by the legendary Aerosmith and the electrifying Yungblud, plus a fresh 2025 mix of their classic hit “Back In The Saddle.” The chemistry between Steven Tyler and Yungblud is nothing short of electric! Tyler’s powerhouse vocals paired with Yungblud’s youthful exuberance create an enchanting sound. The opening line from Tyler, “Will you cry if I called you my angel?” sets a heartfelt tone before Yungblud jumps in with a catchy chorus that you’ll want to sing along to!

Tyler described the collaboration as “plugging into pure electricity,” a phrase that perfectly captures the thrilling sessions they shared in the studio. For Yungblud, recording with his heroes was otherworldly, bringing us this perfect blend of classic rock infused with his fresh sounds. This will definitely be on repeat in my car for quite some time!

Feel Fabulous for your Festive Celebrations:

A Dermatologist’s Guide to Party-Season Skin, Hair and Beauty

It’s that time again — sparkly outfits, fizz in your glass, and more social events in a month than the rest of the year combined. Whether you’re heading to the office Christmas do, a family gettogether, or New Year’s Eve in full glam, there’s a collective sense that we all just want to look our best.

But while we’re planning outfits, manicures, and that perfect party glow, our skin, hair, and nails might let us down if we don’t treat them kindly. Dermatologists often see a flurry of festive flareups each December — allergic rashes from new hair dyes, sore cuticles from DIY gels, and breakouts that appear just in time for Christmas.

The good news? With a little forward planning, you can sparkle without the stress. Here’s my guide to feeling fabulous, confident, and comfortable right through to the New Year.

Hair: Handle with Care Before You Dye

A change of hair colour can be the perfect confidence boost before the party season. For some, it can also come with an itchy scalp or rash around the hairline. Hair dyes, especially darker shades, contain chemicals like paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis.

Even if you’ve dyed your hair or eyebrows before, allergies can develop over time once you have become sensitised to the allergen. That’s why a patch test 48 hours before your appointment is so important to rule out a reaction. If you’re colouring at home, follow the instructions carefully and resist the temptation to skip the patch test.

Scalp reactions can also come from new shampoos, leave-in conditioners, or styling products. Fragrances and preservatives can irritate sensitive skin, and leaving product residue on the scalp for days can lead to flaking or folliculitis (small red bumps around follicles).

So, wash regularly with a gentle shampoo, especially if you use multiple styling products. If your scalp feels sore or flaky, don’t ignore it; seek professional advice from your GP or dermatologist to ‘nip that problem in the bud’ as best possible.

Nails: Festive Fingers, Not Fragile Ones

A manicure might feel like an essential preparty ritual and put you in the Christmas spirit. Or even just as a ‘pick me up’ after a long year. Allergic contact dermatitis from nail products, however, is on the rise, particularly from acrylates - the chemicals that give gel nails their hard finish. Reactions can appear as itchy, peeling skin around the nails, or even rashes on the face or eyelids from hand-to-face transfer. Did you know acrylates can also be found in certain watch straps and some medical devices; so even if you haven’t used artificial nails before and develop a reaction – you might have been sensitised by something else!

emit ultraviolet light. The skin cancer risk is low, but it’s wise to apply SPF to your hands before your manicure or use UVprotective gloves if you’re a regular.

When it’s time to remove your polish, resist peeling or picking. That can lift the nail from the nailbed (onycholysis) and cause long-term abnormal nail appearance (dystrophy). Have gels soaked off professionally, or be patient with acetone wraps at home. If your nails are brittle, give them a break — a tidy polish and nourishing cuticle oil can look elegant and let your nails recover.

Make-Up: The Glow Without the Breakout

Make-up can work wonders — but I see regular acne flares, periorificial dermatitis, and irritation that often trace back to too heavy, or too frequently used, make-up products. If you’re prone to acne or rosacea, consider a ‘less is more’ approach: an oil-free tinted moisturiser, mascara and powder blush if you need it, will not suffocate your skin.

But what else might flare your skin? Trying new products too close to a big event. Whether it’s a new foundation, primer, or shimmer palette, no matter how tolerant you skin has been before, always patch-test new products on your inner forearm for a couple of days to check that your skin doesn’t react. If not, then try on your face.

Keep brushes and sponges clean — they’re magnets for bacteria and oil. A gentle weekly wash keeps them fresh. And finally, always remember to take your make-up off before bed; otherwise it can clog pores, flare acne, or even cause skin irritation as you scrub it off the next day.

Waxing and Hair Removal: Timing Is Everything

Please note, this column is the opinion of the columinst and not that of GNI or Romeo & Julian Publiccations Ltd.

The safest option? Don’t do your own nails at home; speak to a reputable salon about the right products and alternative techniques if you are suffering reactions.

Speaking of lamps, some of these devices used to “set” gels

A hairless chest, sleek and defined eyebrows or a shaped bikini line might be part of your preparty prep, but timing matters. Waxing, shaving, and threading all create tiny breaks in the skin barrier, which can invite folliculitis (inflamed follicles) or pseudofolliculitis (ingrown hairs).

Schedule waxing 3–5 days before your event to allow redness to fade. Avoid trying new methods like sugaring or at-home epilators right before a party - even professional waxing can

trigger irritation if your skin isn’t used to it.

AND DON’T FORGET to stop your tretinoin or retinol 7 days before any facial waxing… otherwise it will be more than hair that’s coming off!

If you get post-wax bumps or itching, use a cool compress and fragrance-free emollient, and avoid perfumed lotions or body sprays on freshly treated areas.

Fragrance and Festive Sensitivity

For many of us, cologne and perfume are the finishing touch to our party look, however, fragrances are common skin sensitisers. If you’ve had rashes on your neck, wrists, or behind your ears, try spraying perfume onto clothing or hair rather than directly on skin. Don’t be afraid either to ask for a tester of new scents to try on your skin before buying – just in case!

Festive Face Treatments: Plan, Don’t Panic

As December fills up with parties and nights out, many people book facials, peels, or injectables to look their best; but even quick treatments need smart timing.

Injectables such as anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers are best done two to three weeks before your big event. This gives any redness or swelling time to settle, but also your results time to take effect. Don’t forget the rules... no alcohol, saunas, or heavy exercise for 24 hours after, or you’ll risk these costly treatments not being as effective.

Polynucleotide injections, are becoming popular for improving texture and hydration — but they work gradually, usually over a series of sessions spaced weeks apart. Similarly, chemical peels and resurfacing treatments can refresh dull complexions but often need five to seven days of downtime for peeling or redness to subside.

Even facials can cause flare-ups in sensitive or rosacea-prone skin, especially if you’re a first-time client. Stick to gentle, hydrating treatments you’ve tried before and leave the ‘new you’ and new treatments for 2026!

If you’re hoping for glowing skin by Christmas, plan early and talk to your dermatologist about a realistic timeline.

Keep Calm and Moisturise On

Amid the sparkle and stress, your skin’s biggest enemy might not be a single product, it could be the festive chaos itself. Late nights, central heating, icy cold weather and alcohol all take their toll.

A few universal tips to keep your skin in check:

• Hydrate inside and out. Alternate your mulled wine with water and use a rich moisturiser morning and night.

• Watch the heat. Hot showers strip your skin’s oils - lukewarm is kinder.

• Mind your hands. Frequent washing and sanitiser use can cause irritation and cracking; apply hand cream after each wash and consider gentle cleansers over bars of soap.

• Sleep. Skin repairs itself overnight, so remember to squeeze in a few early nights over the festive season.

Prep Smart, Stay Soft Party season should be about fun and laughter, so with a little planning, patch-testing, timed treatments, and being gentle, you can look forward to a Merry Christmas without the stress of a skin flare up.

But if something does go wrong; a rash that won’t fade or a breakout that’s overstayed its welcome, don’t panic-Google. Talk with a dermatologist or your GP about treatment of the problem and prevention strategies for the future.

Have a wonderful Christmas readers. Until next year…

Coming Home to the Body: How Yoga Creates Safety, Softening, and Liberation for Queer Bodies

For many queer people, the body has never felt like a safe place. Whether through shame, trauma, dysphoria, rejection, or simply growing up in environments where we learned to shrink ourselves, the body can become a battleground of tension, contraction, and unconscious holding.

Yet the body is also our greatest portal to freedom. And this is where yoga; when practiced with compassion, consent, and deep awareness becomes a radical act of reclamation.

I’m currently deep in a yoga training that weaves anatomy, biomechanics, and somatic presence together. It’s not just about perfecting poses or pushing deeper. It’s about learning the language of my body; its injuries, its history, its compensations, its brilliance and uniqueness. It’s about reconnecting to places I didn’t even realise were numb, clenched, or off-centre. And in this process, yoga has become one of the greatest teachers of safety and down-regulation I’ve ever encountered.

The queer body often carries layers of stress that live far beneath the surface. Years of vigilance, trying to belong, navigating unsafe environments, or holding unspoken stories can build a kind of internal armour. Physically, this armour shows up as tight hips, locked jaws, shallow breath, collapsed posture, or legs that never quite relax.

Yoga begins to peel back that armour; slowly, safely, and with reverence.

Through breathwork, long-held stretches, and mindful movement, yoga communicates directly with the nervous system. It sends a signal that says, “You are safe. You can soften. You can let go now.” This is the down-regulation that so many of us crave: the shift from fight-or-flight into restand-digest, where healing becomes possible.

My training has cracked open a truth I never fully understood: the hips are a vault of unprocessed emotion. For me, this has been deeply personal.

As a baby, I experienced a severe scalding accident that left a lasting imprint, physically and energetically. I grew up unaware of how much I was compensating in my posture, how I shifted weight, how I held myself without ever noticing. Trauma teaches the body to adapt, but those adaptations can linger for decades. They become so habitual that they feel like “just how my body is.”

literally giving oxygen to the parts of me that were holding on for far too long.

There have been moments in practice where a simple stretch has brought tears to my eyes; not from pain, but from release. Yoga gives the body permission to open in its own time, and when it does, it often reveals stories we never realised we were still carrying.

One of the most transformative parts of my training has been the focus on breath. Before this, I didn’t realise how often I lived above my body; thinking, analysing, managing, performing.

Yoga teaches breath not as an accessory but as an anchor. Each inhale invites expansion. Each exhale invites letting go. Breath becomes a bridge between the conscious mind and the unconscious body.

For queer people, who often learned to disconnect from their bodies to survive, this is revolutionary. Breathwork can be a gentle but profound way of reconnecting to sensation, agency, and presence.

While the training is heavy on anatomy and biomechanics, something spiritual has been unfolding too.

Yoga connects mind, body, and spirit not through dogma but through experience. When the breath softens, the muscles release, and the bones find better alignment, something deeper begins to shift. A sense of inner spaciousness. A feeling of being held. A clarity that isn’t intellectual but embodied.

This is what makes yoga so powerful for queer healing: it’s not about transcending the body; it’s about coming home to it.

Please note, this column is the opinion of the columinst and not that of GNI or Romeo & Julian Publiccations Ltd.

This training has gently pulled back the veil. Through hipopening postures, supported stretching, and learning how the pelvis, femur, and spine actually move, I’ve become more conscious of patterns I’ve carried since infancy. I can now feel when I clench my hips, grip my glutes, or brace through my legs. And for the first time, I can breathe into those places;

Yoga offers us a space to open; physically, emotionally, energetically. As the body opens, so does our capacity for vulnerability, pleasure, intimacy, and joy. When the hips soften, the breath deepens, and the nervous system settles, we reclaim parts of ourselves we didn’t even know were missing.

For queer people, this is liberation work. We deserve to feel safe inside our own skin. We deserve softness. We deserve a body that feels like home. And yoga, practiced with awareness and compassion, can be the doorway.

Ten Square Hotel Belfast: A Stay Worth Toasting To

The moment I turned onto Donegall Square South and spotted Ten Square Hotel shimmering beside Belfast’s City Hall, I knew I was in for something special. The building itself has that perfect mix of grandeur and modern class, the kind that makes you stand a little taller as you walk through the door. Nestled right in the heart of the city, Ten Square is the kind of place that manages to feel both central and secluded at once, ideal for anyone looking to indulge in a bit of luxury without leaving the buzz of Belfast behind.

Stepping into the lobby, I was immediately struck by the sense of calm sophistication. There is a modern elegance to the décor, with soft lighting and smooth lines that invite you to slow down and enjoy the moment. The staff greeted me with genuine warmth, none of that robotic “enjoy your stay” nonsense, and before long I was heading upstairs to what turned out to be one of the most impressive hotel suites I have ever had the pleasure of reviewing.

The Lanyon Suite: A Room That Redefines Indulgence

Now let’s talk about the Lanyon Suite, the crown jewel of Ten Square Hotel. When the door opened, I actually took a small step back, partly because of the sheer size and partly because it is so stunning that it deserves a dramatic entrance. This suite does not just whisper luxury, it shouts it in the most refined voice possible.

There is a freestanding bath sitting elegantly within the space, practically begging to be filled with bubbles and a good glass of wine. The bed looks like it has been designed for royalty, and the living area gives you plenty of space to lounge, stretch out, or, if you are like me, dramatically declare that you could get used to this at least twice an hour. The view out over Belfast’s rooftops completes the scene, a private sanctuary above the city’s lively pulse.

The suite is equipped with everything you would expect from a high end stay, from plush furnishings to smart entertainment, a coffee machine that looks like it could launch a spaceship, and all the little touches that make a space feel special. The lighting is particularly clever, adjustable to create moods ranging from romantic and mysterious to I need to see where I dropped my phone charger.

After exploring every corner of the suite, and taking more than a few photos to make my friends jealous, I settled in, poured myself a drink, and got ready for dinner. If the suite was any indication of what was to come, I knew the meal downstairs was going to be good.

Dinner at Ten Square: A Love Letter to My Taste Buds

I started with the prawns pil pil, and honestly, I am still thinking about them. They were the sort of dish that makes you go quiet for a moment while your brain catches up with how good it tastes. Perfectly cooked prawns swimming in a pool of garlic and chilli oil that had just the right amount of heat, enough to warm you without setting off any alarms. The semi toasted bread on the side was exactly what was needed to soak up every last drop of that glorious oil. My only complaint, if you can call it that, was that I did not want it to end. If someone had handed me a second portion, I would have accepted it with both hands and no shame.

For the main course, I went with the fillet steak served with vegetables and peppercorn sauce. Chips did come with the dish though I opted for a large portion of veg as I wanted to leave room for dessert .

Now, I do not say this lightly, but this was one of the best steaks I have had in a very long time. It was cooked to perfection, charred and smoky on the outside, tender and juicy within. You know that magical moment when your knife glides through a steak like it is butter? That was this. Every bite was a celebration of flavour and texture. The vegetables were a welcome surprise too, a vibrant mix of tender stem broccoli, sweet carrots, and petit pois cooked to perfection. No sad soggy greens here. Everything had crunch, colour, and taste. And then, the peppercorn sauce. I could have honestly drunk it. Creamy, peppery, rich, and smooth, the kind of sauce that makes you consider asking for a refill just to dunk your cutlery in. Huge compliments to the chef or, more likely, the team of culinary magicians working behind the scenes.

By the time dessert arrived, I was already bordering on full, but you cannot stay somewhere this

finish with something sweet. So, naturally, I went for the sticky toffee pudding, my all time favourite. It arrived warm and comforting, drenched in golden toffee caramel sauce. I loved it so much that I asked for an extra jug of sauce to pour over the top, which transformed it into a heavenly, gooey masterpiece. It was indulgent, rich, and everything you want from a pudding that is basically a warm hug in dessert form.

The Morning After the Feast

Waking up in the Lanyon Suite is an experience all on its own. The morning light spills through the windows, the city hums softly below, and you are cocooned in a space that feels far removed from the daily rush. Breakfast here follows suit, beautifully presented, perfectly cooked, and served with that same friendly attentiveness that runs throughout the hotel. Whether you are going for a hearty fry up or something lighter, everything is fresh, hot, and served with genuine Northern Irish hospitality.

After breakfast, I ran myself a long, lazy bath, because when a freestanding tub like that is staring at you, it would be rude not to. The water pressure, by the way, could probably power a small boat. It is the kind of bath where you forget time exists. By the time I emerged, relaxed and vaguely prune like, I was already plotting my return visit.

The Hotel Experience

One of the standout things about Ten Square is how it manages to feel so connected to Belfast itself. You step out the door and you are moments away from the theatres, shops, restaurants, and bars that make the city so vibrant. Yet, step back inside, and you are wrapped up in quiet comfort and style. It is this contrast, energy outside and calm inside, that makes it so appealing.

The hotel also has a warmth that extends beyond its décor. The staff genuinely seem to enjoy what they do. They are friendly, efficient, and full of little touches that make guests feel valued. There is a subtle ease to the service here, attentive but never intrusive. You feel looked after, not managed, and that is a rare and beautiful thing in hospitality.

It is easy to see why Ten Square is such a popular choice for weddings, events, and luxury getaways. Everything about it feels thought through. The design, the food, the service, it all works together to create an experience that is effortlessly memorable.

A Perfect Match for GNI MAG Readers

For readers of GNI MAG, Ten Square ticks every box. It is inclusive, stylish, and unapologetically indulgent, a place that celebrates comfort and individuality in equal measure. Whether you are planning a romantic weekend, a night of fine dining followed by an opulent stay, or just want to spoil yourself for the sheer joy of it, Ten Square is the place to do it.

And let’s be honest, Belfast deserves a hotel like this. It is cosmopolitan yet grounded, elegant yet fun, and there is a sense of personality that shines through everything from the décor to the dessert menu. This is not a cookie cutter hotel experience. It is something that feels uniquely Belfast, confident, contemporary, and proud of its place in the heart of the city.

Final Thoughts

As I checked out of the Lanyon Suite, a small part of me considered chaining myself to the freestanding bath and refusing to leave. Sadly, I resisted the urge. But it is a testament to how good the stay was that I genuinely did not want it to end.

Ten Square is not just a hotel. It is an experience, one of those rare places that manages to blend five star comfort with real character. The Lanyon Suite is pure luxury from start to finish, the food is outstanding, and the staff tie it all together with warmth and charm. From the first glass of wine to the last drop of toffee sauce, the entire stay felt like a celebration.

If you are looking for a Belfast stay that is as stylish as it is welcoming, Ten Square Hotel is it. Treat yourself, take your partner, or just go solo and revel in self care. Life is too short not to experience a little luxury now and then. And if you do book the Lanyon Suite, do yourself a favour, order some wine, hop in the tub and thank me later.

Thank you so much to the management, staff and chefs for your service and hospitality

Oh also for anyone who has seen the recent social media posts and news, going forward the hotel will be known as DoubleTree Belfast City Ten Square, same heart, welcome and faces you are familiar with, though now with the benefits of DoubleTree , it’s all very exciting.

Ballyhack and Belmont Restaurant Renaissance Gourmet

After a gloomy period of watching some our favourite East Belfast eateries closing down, or reinventing themselves in other parts of the city, 2025 has seen a culinary revolution. With an upsurge in brand new restaurants and eateries on the Upper Newtownards Road and Belmont, things have definitely taken a turn for the better for lovers of great foodie destinations. Here are four of our favourite newcomers, and a few more we can’t wait to try!

Pepito.

Recently launched by the team behind Neill’s Hill, Pepito is bringing an Iberian vibe to the Upper Newtownards Rd with its stunning Spanish-style small plates paired with a curated selection of European wines.

Pepito’s casual atmosphere, with its open kitchen, the terracotta paintwork, and the central high sharing bench similar in style to Vinotecas we’ve visited in Spain, creates an authentic Mediterranean feel, and the restaurant was absolutely buzzing on the Saturday afternoon we visited.

The tapas are top notch, hardly surprising as Neill’s Hill’s summer tapas nights were always sell-outs!

There were so many standout dishes that it was difficult to pick a favourite! The Pan con Tomate was topped with salted anchovies, the Roast Padron Peppers were sprinkled with smoked sea salt & a squeeze of lemon, and the Cauliflower & Three Cheese Arancini were golden, resting on a spicy tomato sauce.

A definite recommendation would be the Chestnut Mushrooms with roast garlic, earthy parsnip pureé & fried quail’s eggs, and the Roast Scallops with caponata, Charred Mackerel with green sauce & pickled shallots, and the Bubbling Garlic King Prawns with baguette for dipping, were all excellent. And of course, it wouldn’t be tapas without ordering a portion of spicy, garlicky Patatas Bravas!

For dessert, we were intrigued to try the Roast Banana Budino: a silky smooth custardy confection, with rich

LUNA
PEPITO

banana and caramel flavours. A must for Banoffee fans.

And the cheese selection is small, but perfectly formed. Either creamy, piquant Gorgonzola or sharp, nutty Manchego served with bread or biscuits, grapes, and chutney. Sublime simplicity!

Pepito is probably Belfast’s first Vermuteria with its fine selection of vermuts, aperitivo, and slow sippers! Next time, we’ll leave the car!

Luna

Newly opened in Ballyhackamore, Luna is a neighbourhood bistro which champions the finest local produce.

The menus are seasonal with many dishes which are contemporary in style, or with a unique twist on traditional favourites.

We were keen to try the Sunday Social Menu. Served 12:00-17:00, this is a great value deal, with starter and main course for £29, or add a dessert for £7.

Owner Neil brought us a selection of starters; tender Salt and Chilli Soft Shell Crab with citrus aioli & micro leaf, beautifully fresh Carlingford Oysters with a Bloody Mary shot, shallot vinegar, & lemon, and a luxurious Scallop & Prawn Risotto, with butternut squash, parmesan, & crispy sage.

He also recommended a very drinkable biodynamic Bucefalo Vino da Uve Appassite to accompany our meal.

For mains, we couldn’t resist one of the Sunday Roast specials; Boned, Stuffed Pan Roasted Chicken served with duck fat roasties, greens, baby carrots, & proper gravy.

We also had the fish special of Salmon with lemon beurre blanc, tenderstem broccoli, & crab and ricotta tortellini, which was perfectly pink and succulently moist.

Desserts were also superb; a nostalgic, old school Baked Rice Pudding with whiskey soaked damsons, and the extraordinary “Luna Cheese” with honey, apple, coffee, & shards-a simple, unconventional yet utterly moreish way to enjoy Manchego! And do try the frozen Pineau des Charentes dessert wine. Sensational!

Upstairs, there’s also a terrific, cosy cocktail lounge which is open every Friday & Saturday night for pre-dinner cocktails or a post prandial night-cap!

Luna’s passion for food is abundantly evident, and the team is committed to bringing an exceptional dining experience to East Belfast.

Mizo Luxe

Having successfully launched restaurants on the Ormeau Rd and in Belfast’s city centre, Mizo’s latest venture is Mizo Luxe, a brilliant Asian fusion venue on the Belmont Road.

The relaxed vibe is perfect for an informal dining experience in cool, contemporary surroundings, and we thoroughly enjoyed the dishes on the “Prix Fixe” menu which is excellent value for money.

All the plates were very good indeed; to start, golden, crunchy Tempura Prawns, sticky Sesame Cauliflower Wings in a Manchurian style sauce, and steamed Vegetable Gyoza.

We also enjoyed the stir fried Phad Krapow Prawns with rice, but our favourite dish was the terrifically tasty Teriyaki Tofu with an Asian Greens Salad. Utterly delicious!

small corkage charge, and keep your eyes peeled for exciting plans ahead; new A La Carte and Lunch Menus, Bottomless Brunches, Cocktails, and other surprises!

Pica

This brilliant new restaurant has taken East Belfast by storm. Since May, Pica on the Belmont Rd has been serving up Mexican inspired dishes, showcasing fantastic ingredients from Mexico alongside seasonal local produce.

We called in for lunch, and we were impressed by the authentic feel of the space, from the choice of seating options and the carefully considered colour palette, to the

Champiñón options were both packed with flavour, and were accompanied by some delicious Papas: fried potatoes on crème fraiche, sprinkled with chives.

Finally, we were treated to some quirkily presented Horchata Ice Cream!

Serving Tacos, Smalls, Margaritas, Tequila, Mezcal, and lots more, Pica is perfection on a plate.

And here are four new additions to the East that we’re really looking forward to trying;

Kion, a Latin-Nikkei restaurant combining two rich culinary worlds: the bold, passionate flavours of Latin America and the refined balance of Nikkei cuisine, with a menu featuring dishes such as Tuna Tartar, Crispy Plantain, Seabass Ceviche, and Pork Mole.

Pickle & Smoke, based in Hearth pub, serves up bold flavours, slow-smoked meats, and artisan sourdough fillings. We love the sound of the Korean Cauliflower, and the Beetroot & Goats Cheese Pizza.

Lasa, founded by husband-and-wife team Conor and Elizabeth Brennan, serves up the vibrant flavours of Filipino cuisine, from Pork Lumpia and fragrant Pineapple Adobo, to Monkfish Filipino Red Curry. There’s a Thursday Curry Night, and a weekend tasting menu.

Tommy’s Coconut Margarita, a Chilli & Cardamom Margarita, and a Blueberry & Lavender Margarita. We certainly understand why Pica is getting the reputation for the best Margs in town.

While we waited, we nibbled on some Totopos with Guacamole and house salsas-and we loved the habanero based salsas for that extra chilli kick!

Next, the charred Padrón Peppers were served with a vibrant Jalapeño Ricotta, and the pretty Crab Tostada was fresh, light and citrusy.

Time for Tacos, and the Baja Fish, Carne Asada, and

Flink, the latest venture from Michael Deane and business partner Karl Wilkinson, is a smash burger eatery serving the best local beef burgers, fries, soft serve ice cream, wine, and more.

FAIR GAME

I have always respected the idea of recognising chapters in life. I had moved 5 times by the time I was 5 years of age and 7 times by the time I was 18 so I knew the importance of new beginnings. I spent primary school playing tin whistle, violin and singing in choir as a bit of a loner.

I was the stereotypical Gay Theatre kid from the age 10 to 22. At 25 I went to business school for my post grad and became a Corporate and Government Banker before working for Global corporations like PWC, Baker McKenzie and Grant Thornton. This experience lead me more into community work which is when I joined the Health Sector and began launching community groups for the LGBTQIA+ community.

There’s a quiet kind of power in new beginnings, the moment when uncertainty and possibility stand shoulder to shoulder, and you realise that everything you’ve worked toward has brought you right here. For me, that recent new beginning takes shape in two forms: the keys to my first home, resting in my hand, and the official registration of my first Community Interest Company, an organisation devoted to helping National Governing Bodies become more inclusive, equitable, and reflective of the diverse communities they represent.

Both milestones feel like acts of creation. Both are deeply personal. And both began long before they were made real—born instead from years of dreaming, sacrificing, doubting, and deciding to step forward anyway.

There came a point when co-ownership looked like an appealing shortcut, a shared mortgage, split costs, a quicker route to the dream. I researched every detail, from shared equity schemes to joint ownership agreements. On paper, it made perfect sense: affordability, support, shared responsibility. But something in my gut hesitated.

• Speak to a Mortgage Advisor to get affordability.

• Calculate what I can borrow via Co-Ownership and straight Mortgages and cost of paying back to decide a target price.

• View Properties over a month.

• Win a property bidding war.

• Search and select a solicitor based of quotes.

• Meet with Mortgage Advisor to finalise paperwork.

Even as I packed boxes for the move, another vision was taking shape. My first Community Interest Company ‘Fair Game’ was born from the same belief that drove me to buy my first home: that inclusion should be built intentionally, not incidentally.

Please note, this column is the opinion of the columinst and not that of GNI or Romeo & Julian Publiccations Ltd.

It wasn’t an act of defiance but of faith. I trusted that by moving at my own pace, I would eventually arrive somewhere that felt right—not just somewhere that looked good on paper. Once annoyance for me was everyone complicating the experience. Obviously everyone has a different experience but for anyone curious of an example mine was basically:

• Save a Deposit

In the world of sport and governance, change often feels glacial. National Governing Bodies hold immense power to shape participation, representation, and opportunity but too often, their structures reflect tradition rather than transformation. My CIC exists to challenge that, to create pathways for inclusion that aren’t performative but permanent.

Starting this organisation feels, in many ways, like moving into a new house. There’s excitement, yes, but also responsibility. You walk through the metaphorical rooms of funding, partnerships, outreach and realise how much needs to be built from the ground up. But you also see possibility in every corner.

I’ve learned that creating something meaningful requires the same patience as saving for a home deposit. You build relationships brick by brick, you invest before you see returns, and you hold faith through uncertainty. Each milestone, your first partner, your first pilot programme, your first real impact is a reminder that every act of inclusion begins with an act of courage.

In many ways, these two journeys mirror each other. Both require long-term vision, steady commitment, and the willingness to take uncomfortable steps toward a better future. Both demand that you believe in a reality you cannot yet see.

And both are about creating space. A home provides shelter for the self; a community initiative provides shelter for others, especially those who have been left standing in the rain too long.

When I unlock my front door, I’m reminded of the doors I want to unlock for others: doors to opportunity, to leadership, to inclusion. My new beginning is personal, but it’s also a promise that I will use my stability to create belonging for others.

I grew up hearing the stories of Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, Che Guevara, Rosa Parks, Emmeline Pankhurst, Bob Marley and John Lewis. Each had to not only battle against those in power but often the harder battle is

showing their own communities how there is a better way. I always had to move slow to protect my own worth and not offend but not I have the equity, the standing and the resources to push forward without fear of failure or rejection.

I remember the song ‘One Love’ playing in my home growing up as a child with a message of coming together for a better future. I think people have always judged my views on inclusive sports and what opportunity it can bring as over optimistic but I have seen the incredible results and I put my heart into this work and believe in the power of team sports to unite.

My home and my company will both stand as symbols of community and unity and love. From Musician to Actor to Director then to Corporate Financer to Health Worker to Entrepreneur and Homeowner. I look forward to my next chapter.

Helly Hansen Holmen Five Pocket Pant A Perfect Companion For Ireland’s Wild Weather

E

very so often, a piece of outdoor clothing arrives that instantly earns its place in your wardrobe. For me, that moment came when Helly Hansen kindly sent over a pair of their Holmen Five Pocket Pants to test. I can safely say they fit like a glove and have already become a go to choice for tackling the grim winter weather that Ireland is throwing our way.

Ireland is known for many things, but predictable weather is not one of them. We can start the morning in sunshine, find ourselves in steady drizzle by lunchtime, and end the day in a gusty downpour. Add to that our deep love for getting outdoors and exploring the beauty on our doorstep, and it makes complete sense that these trousers have quickly become a best seller. From hiking the Mournes to strolling around the city on a damp Saturday afternoon, they have been designed to handle it all.

What struck me first was how comfortable they felt. The fabric has a natural stretch that moves with you rather than against you, making them ideal for longer walks, inclines and any situation where you need flexibility. Whether I was bending, stretching or climbing a steep muddy patch of trail, they never once felt restrictive or heavy. The articulated knees and shaped construction give you freedom to move and keep the trousers feeling easy and effortless throughout the day.

Irish weather has a way of testing everything you wear, and these trousers passed each test without hesitation. The material dries quickly, does not cling when caught in the rain, and somehow still manages to retain its smart, sharp look even after a full day outdoors. This is a major benefit for anyone who wants clothing that works for both adventure and real life. If you enjoy heading straight into town after a morning in the hills, you will appreciate how easily these trousers transition from trail to city without looking out of place.

The classic five pocket layout is practical without feeling bulky. Everything is where you instinctively want it to be, and the design remains clean and stylish. Available in neutral colours, they pair well with almost anything, giving them the versatility to become a wardrobe staple. You can throw them on with a fleece for a hike or a jacket for a casual day out and they will always look the part.

Helly Hansen as a brand has long been trusted for quality and innovation. Established in Norway over one hundred and forty years ago, they are known for creating hard wearing performance wear that genuinely supports people who live and work in challenging conditions. Their focus on dependable design and clever fabric technology runs through every product, and the Holmen Five Pocket Pant is a perfect example of that tradition. It blends practicality, durability and comfort with an easy style that suits everyday life as much as the outdoors.

If you are someone who enjoys fresh air regardless of the weather, or simply wants a reliable pair of trousers that can handle busy days, changing conditions and everything in between, these are a fantastic choice. They are ideal for hikes, dog walks, weekend exploring and even the school run. With the colder months settling in, they offer exactly the kind of comfort and protection that makes getting outside feel effortless again.

A massive thank you to Helly Hansen for sending these over. I am genuinely impressed and will be wearing them non stop this season. They are the perfect partner for Irish weather, and a brilliant investment for anyone looking to stay comfortable, dry and ready for whatever the day brings.

Thanks to ADPR for reaching out and this collaboration.

I Cape Verde one of the most tolerant nations in Africa

ts always good to try and venture to new holiday destinations especially where the LGBTQ+ community can feel comfortable and enjoy themselves without fear. Cape Verde is now widely considered to be a Gay friendly destination mainly due to same sex sexual activity being legal since 2004. It is one of the most tolerant nations in Africa for our community which offers protection.

Cape Verde is an archipelago made of 10 volcanic islands. They offer naturally stunning beaches and a warm unique climate. You will find some truly beautiful resorts to stay in and I have simply decided to suggest you take at look at options which I think would provide you with a great week long stay.

I must point out that Cape Verde does not have the typical Gay clubs and bars which attract many of us year in year out to the likes of Gran Canaria or Costa Blanca but please don’t let this stop you trying this Africa hot spot.

If you a regular GNI travel column reader you know I like to stay in different hotel chains and sometimes often try a similar chain/brand when venturing somewhere new. My first recommendation is the Melia Laguna Beach resort which is only a 5 minute drive from the Vibrant Santa Maria.

The Melia Laguna Beach Resort is Adult Only and offers guests an oceanfront position with top notch designer interiors and excellent dinning options. I think this property would be excellent for couples holiday or even an excellent value for money

short-haul honeymoon option. You will be able to enjoy two outdoor spacious pools , 3 different bars, gym, and activities program and not forgetting my most favourite thing in any hotel I book a First Class Spa. This property is steps away from Algodoerio Beach.

This property is offered on an all inclusive holiday basis via the majority of UK timor operators like easyJet Holidays and TUI.

You will find plenty of activities to try like seeing the sights via 4X4 of Sal, Take a long stroll along the 7K Santa Maria Beach or why not hitch a ride to Cape Verdes largest island Santiago and explore its old capital Cidade Velha.

If your looking to take your family with you to Cape Verde then I would suggest you look no further than Sol Dunas Family Fun. Sol is a well known and supported brand throughout Europe and so you can expect high standards for both rooms and food quality.

This is and All Inclusive property which is fantastic for young families and offers a family fun filled package in a tropical paradise only a few minutes from Santa Maria.

This property is all centred around the big pool, as this is a family choice property waterslides and a little ones play ground which looks like a sandcastle helps keep them entertained. Its also an excellent spot for you to explore coral reefs, swim with sharks if your brave or maybe you would like to try you hand on a fishing trip?

The buffet restaurants compliment the pair of bars, and at night time the amphitheater comes alive where all evening shows are held.

Cape Verde is pretty new to the Northern Irish travel market but operators like Easyjet Holidays, Jet2 Holidays and TUI all offer package holidays here now. You can also opt for the more DIY approach and book flight only and combine with AirBNB or apartments and maybe opt for private transfers or car hire.

Passport requirements are pretty standards for UK arrivals you must have a minimum 6 month validity and you have to complete what is known as a TSA basically and airport Tax which can be completed at least 5 days before arrival. This is the same process for Irish passport holders.

Africa has never been a huge draw for me personally but when I found out that Cape Verde was now so welcoming and if not the most of African countries I wanted to give it a go. Like any new destination you have to just give it a chance on both accommodation and food standards but if you are a regular traveller and have been to say Spain or Greece then you have nothing to loose,

I feel Cape Verde is a brilliant alternative for those who have maybe travelled often to the likes of Lanzarote , Tenerife or maybe even Portugal. My advice is give it a go make sure you check out the hotel reviews but ultimately book and plan the holiday you want to your budget and the passions that you have from lazy beach days or getting involved with the exciting activities.

Keep travelling and exploring the planet we all deserve the free education that is travel.

PETER

There are some conversations in life that we just can’t help ourselves from having: In retail it’s “Well… what’s the weather like outside?” In a taxi it’s asking the driver “Well… you busy tonight?” and at this time of year it has to be “Well… you got your Christmas tree up?”

I was ready disgustingly early this year (17th November to be exact) but we decided it was the landmark year to ‘change up the scheme’ and the decorations were in the way so i thought “why not!”. Each year there are more and more ideas and themes available for us all to buy that it’s almost impossible for anyone to be left out when it comes to festive decor. Some key trends i’ve noticed this year were the reappearance of Bows: but this time they are everywhere! Think string garlands of tiny bows, gigantic bows that spill down the whole Christmas tree, bow motifs on plates, bow napkins, bow paper, you name it! It’s a cute trend that really opens out to those DIY lovers because let’s face it, it’s not too hard to buy a roll and make your own for a fraction of the price! Kitsch: brands are making baubles out of absolutely everything this year! It’s all about fun with this trend and so far the most random ornaments i’ve seen are a glass dartboard ornament, a glass claw hair clip, a glass Ugg boot, even a glass packet of crisps! and guess what?these are all from just one store. M&S are absolutely killing the kitsch trend, they even have their own glass version of their iconic Colin the caterpillar cake! Ralph Lauren: this trend is all about the cosy life but it exudes classic refinement. Cable-knit cushions, Black Watch tartan, teddy bears, cocktails- boarding school luxury! This trend works really well with dark wood tones so if you have mahogany furniture you can easily nod to it or if you’re starting this trend from scratch get down to your local charity shop to find an old bar cart or leather armchair to style up. Lastly, the biggest

trend, one that pulls at the heart strings, has no rules and is the one we are buying into in our own home, Nostalgic. When you think of this classic themethink Home Alone or going over to your granny’s! Depending on your age this will look different to each of us but this ‘trend’ is all about IGNORING trends and decorating in a personal, homely style using ornaments and memories collected throughout the years. I may give away my age here but my earliest memories were of folding foil garlands hanging from the ceiling, little drum decorations on the tree and coloured

lights (not the LED kind we’re talking vintage Incandescent lights with cone covers). Nothing is meant to be perfect with this style, infact, if it looks a little messy it only adds to the charm. You can grab

the vintage style foil decorations in The Range starting at a bargain £1.29 and they instantly transport you back 30-40 years. Also, when did we stop putting children’s hand made ornaments made from toilet roll tubes on top of the tree? When did we lose our Christmas spirit!? Could this be the trend of Christmas 2026?

Home & Interiors isn’t just about how a space visually looks, but it’s also about how it feels. At Christmas we tend to have a lot of guests over (some wanted, some not!) and when we open our doors we want them to feel at home. There are so many ways you can add festive touches around your home so that it has a welcoming and inviting energy. Guest bedrooms: add caring touches like a stocking on the end of the bed so it feels like your guests belong and it’s not just a cold unused space. Bale up a stack of guest towels or simply tie a ribbon around one towel so essential items feel considered. Finally, give them the hotel experience with new slippers to wear round the house- these don’t have to be expensive! It’s the thought that counts.

For anyone hosting a party or brave enough to host Christmas dinner, one touch that can make your life a little easier is if you set up a bar cart or mini drinks station at the side of the room because it means guests can help

themselves without hassling you. Use a console or built-in if you don’t have the luxury of a specific cart, but the key to achieving that extravagant touch is dedicating it solely to that purpose (it’s not for your everyday objects or recipe books, hide them away). Strip it all back and display a variety of glasses (upside down or pre-prepare them with festive garnishes), an ice bucket, straws, then bottles & carafes at the back .. everything you need in a one stop shop. Some battery string lights mixed throughout or a few festive ornaments will give it that soft inviting glow for them to help themselves.

A last little note from me is to thank all those who nominated, voted & supported me for my GNI Awards

you have and thank you for your support throughout the year by reading this column.

Merry Christmas!

nomination! I didn’t win but the rightful person did, I was just grateful to be there and had a fabulous night out!

Reformed, A collection that redefines the boundaries of hair artistry

Reformed is a vibrant, unapologetic exploration of colour, structure and contemporary design. Created as my official collection for the British Hairdressing Awards 2025, this body of work pushes into new creative territory where futuristic pop art influences collide with precision technique, and where hair becomes both sculpture and statement.

At its core, Reformed is a celebration of boldness. It embraces loud, highimpact colour work paired with meticulously engineered shapes, inviting the viewer to reconsider what hair can be, how it can behave, and the stories it can tell. Each image in the collection is built around the idea of transformation: the moment where the familiar breaks apart and reforms into something powerful, unexpected, and undeniably modern.

Inspired by the dynamic

texture, the collection showcases a palette of intense hues designed to command attention. Electric teals, saturated magentas, neon citrus tones, and hyper-bright blues form the backbone of the colour story, layered in a way that enhances shape and amplifies dimension. These colours are not simply decorative they function as emotional amplifiers, evoking energy, rebellion, empowerment, and a sense of forward momentum.

The visual language of the collection draws heavily on futuristic pop art: clean geometric divisions, sharp contrasts, bold graphic panels and exaggerated lines. This aesthetic is woven into the cutting and styling to create silhouettes that feel animated, digital, almost otherworldly. Each look is a hybrid of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary edge precision cutting

innovative colour placements, structured forms softened by unexpected fluidity, and hard lines juxtaposed with soft textures. The result is a suite of looks that feel alive, active and in motion, even when captured in a still frame.

While the colours and shapes are striking, Reformed is ultimately about narrative about the constant evolution of identity and the ways in which hair allows us to reimagine who we are. Every look represents a moment of transition, a breaking away from old expectations and a move toward something bolder and more self-assured. It speaks to the ever-changing nature of style and self-expression, celebrating the courage it takes to redefine oneself through colour, cut and creative vision.

The technical approach behind the collection was carefully considered to support this theme. Colours were layered to create gradients that respond differently under varied lighting conditions, making the hair appear transformed from every angle. Textures were manipulated to catch and reflect light, emphasising movement and injecting an almost cinematic quality into each shot. Precision cutting was used to carve out sharp architectural shapes, while soft layering techniques added fluidity and contrast. This interplay between structure and softness became central to the collection’s identity.

Working on Reformed also allowed me to explore the emotional connection people have with hair. Colour can empower, shape can embolden, and

transformation can ignite confidence. I wanted every look to feel like a declaration a visual reminder that style is personal, powerful, and continuously reinvented. Through experimentation and risk-taking, each model became a canvas for a new version of themselves, reflecting the spirit of a collection born from evolution and fearless creativity.

Creating this body of work for the British Hairdressing Awards 2025 has been both an honour and a defining moment in my creative journey. The collection represents not only my passion for hairdressing, but also my belief in pushing boundaries, exploring unfamiliar territory, and challenging conventional ideas of beauty and design. Reformed is a tribute to the innovators the risktakers and the artists within the industry who continue to evolve the craft and inspire the next wave of visionaries.

Through bold colour futuristic influences and transformative shapes Reformed stands as a statement of what is possible when imagination is allowed to take the lead. It invites viewers to see hair not just as a style, but as an expressive medium capable of storytelling, empowerment and reinvention. This collection is my contribution to the evolving landscape of British hairdressing a celebration of artistry, individuality and the limitless potential of creative expression.

OUT&ACTIVE

FROM A PHONE CALL TO A FAMILY: OUT & ACTIVE NI’S FIRST YEAR

A year ago, one phone call sparked an idea that became a community. Today, on a November afternoon, we sat down with a cup of coffee to reflect, not just on the 40+ events, but also on the people, the laughter, the surprises, and the moments that felt truly meaningful, both for others and for ourselves. We are Ryan Lee-Gribben and Alexis Montgomery-Bugel, cofounders of Out & Active NI, and this is our conversation.

Ryan: It still makes me laugh how it all started. I was sitting on the sofa one day and decided I wanted to do something like this. I got the urge to phone you while you were on holiday in Canada and asked if you wanted to be part of it. You said, “Yeah, why not?” and that was that. It all came from that one phone call, and now here we are. It feels surreal that what I imagined as a tiny wee group turned into something so big that it needs proper management. It has been incredibly rewarding, but it really does feel like a job now.

Alexis: I definitely remember that call. I was on the motorway between Montreal and Toronto and you were full of excitement. I wasn’t entirely sure what you were talking about, but it sounded fun, so I thought, sure, let’s go for it. It took me a few months to properly understand where it was going, but the moment it hit me was the January hike in Doan when we had about 55 people. That was when I realised that it was turning into something big.

Ryan: So what did you think it was going to be at the start? I had a picture in my mind, but I didn’t know it would turn into what it is now or grow so fast.

Alexis: At the start, I was trusting your enthusiasm. I didn’t have a one-year or five-year plan, but

over time I realised how much people here needed something like this, not just an activity group, but also a way to meet people and build a social life. And I was aware that you had created other businesses before, so I knew that you having that vision was enough to get going! I basically assumed you knew what you were doing, which was a bold choice!

Ryan: I think part of it was selfish for me. There were LGBTQIA+ groups doing one specific thing, like running, hiking or knitting, and that’s brilliant, but I wanted a space where we could do different activities every time. Somewhere you didn’t have to be good at anything. You could just turn up, try something new, and enjoy it. And that’s still what I love most about it. When you look back, we’ve done a lot.

Alexis: Yeah! We’ve done 42 events to date. It’s mad! I can’t believe we’ve had so many.

Ryan: Technically, the first thing we ever did was a very small walk, but the first proper event with a name, promotion, and branding was bowling.

Alexis: Yes, that one felt real. I remember feeling excited but also nervous because we’d put ourselves out there. It became something people could join.

Ryan: I remember saying to Gareth, my husband, and probably you and the others, that it had to stay small so it didn’t take over my life. I didn’t want something big. Gareth told me, “Give it two months, and you’ll be going one hundred miles an hour because that’s who you are.” And he was right.

Alexis: What was the moment when you realised it was becoming bigger than expected?

Ryan: For me, it was the Traitors weekend. It wasn’t our biggest in numbers, but it was the most

demanding. We took 24 people away for a full weekend, feeding them, making sure they were okay, and running the game. It felt like running an actual business. I realised then that we’d created something with real responsibility, and we’d set a very high standard without meaning to. We have to remember this isn’t our full-time job and it isn’t how we earn money.

Alexis: What keeps you motivated to do it?

Ryan: I still genuinely enjoy the events. I love laughing, and I constantly laugh at them. I’ve made lifelong friends through it, and you and I have become much closer. I also love watching people come alone at first, and months later seeing them with friends they met through Out & Active. Some of them didn’t have that before. And I get something out of it too because I love doing different things at the weekends. I’m not just organising; I’m a member as well.

Alexis: I realised that some events I didn’t think I’d enjoy turned out to be brilliant. I never would have played rounders without Out & Active, I’m very sure of that! I’ve learned a lot about myself. I think what keeps me going is seeing people become more confident. Some people at the start didn’t talk very much, and now they’re settled and comfortable. I relate to that because I tend to be socially anxious, and I know I’m not the only one.

Ryan: I don’t think you’re socially anxious anymore. Doing this every week and having to put yourself out there has changed that. I’ve seen a lot of growth in you. When you mentioned rounders, it reminded me of how nervous people were about rugby, but it turned out to be one of the best events we ever did. The Azlans made it great and everyone felt welcome. It shows that sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone is all it takes. The activity almost doesn’t matter; it’s the company that makes it.

Alexis: There were challenges this year that I didn’t expect, but I appreciate that we handled them together. It brought us closer,

Ryan and Alexis with the former Lord Mayor of Belfast, Micky Murray, at a community networking event.
Ryan and Alexis on a ski trip in Italy.

not just us two but other members too.

Ryan: We definitely built strong bonds. Some challenges were unavoidable and others might have been avoided if we’d recognised each other’s roles more clearly. But you learn as you go. There’s no manual for this.

Alexis: There were times when it felt like a job. Some evenings we would rather have relaxed, but instead we were dealing with decisions and planning. Event meetings definitely weren’t always easy.

Ryan: Before some meetings, I genuinely felt low because I was tired, but once the meeting started, you have to be positive. People underestimate how much work goes on behind the scenes. It’s not always fun, and sometimes it feels like a chore.

Alexis: You have to work for the reward. Ryan: What’s one meaningful moment this year for you?

Alexis: The whole vibe at the paddle-boarding event at Moira Lakes. I remember watching everyone on their boards, smiling. And later, when we all stayed on the grass afterwards, it felt special. People were sunbathing, chatting and enjoying each other’s company in such a lovely setting. Watching the video that Sinead created made me smile for days afterwards.

Ryan: I’ll never forget walking with someone on a hike and them telling me they had struggled with their mental health and that Out & Active had made a huge difference. I didn’t expect it to have that emotional impact. Some come for fun, but others come because they need a lifeline. That conversation helped me keep perspective. Even when I was overwhelmed and missing quiet weekends at home, it reminded me that this means something.

Alexis: I feel proud when people take ownership, especially our ambassadors turning up with little lanyards and making newcomers feel welcome time and time again. That showed me it belonged to everyone, not just

us. We would never have pulled off such a large number of events without several key people. Special shout-out to Ciara, Conor, Dean, Rob, Gary, Colm, Sinead, David and Katie. I feel so grateful for each person’s involvement in Out & Active.

Ryan: We had an idea, but everyone who joined helped build it. People contributed skills, time, photos, design, planning and support. It became a community project.

Alexis: This was 100% a team effort. What would you change if you could go back?

Ryan: I’d set clearer expectations from the start. We couldn’t predict how fast it would grow, but I didn’t realise how much time, organising, and emotional energy it would take. It’s absolutely worth it, but I would have prepared myself more. There were definitely times when I would rather have relaxed or watched TV, but had to work on something for an event months away. What about you, what would you change?

Alexis: There’s not much I would change because we learned along the way. Maybe we could have made some parts easier for ourselves. Looking back, I struggled with not being an “ideas person.” I worried that I wasn’t contributing enough, but over time I realised we all bring different strengths, and people appreciated mine.

Ryan: Exactly. It needs different types of people. It’s a lot of work, but it has been really good for both of us.

Alexis: So, what are your top three events?

Ryan: Tag rugby, the Enniskillen camping trip, and the Traitors weekend.

Alexis: I wasn’t at any of those. It seems like you enjoy yourself best when I can’t make it!

Ryan: That’s your fault for being busy when the best events are on!

Alexis: Anyway! Best events for me would be

coasteering, rounders, and the Derry Hunt. I love that we’re not only Belfast-based and that we’ve had events in other places too: Banbridge, Portrush, Newcastle, Enniskillen, Lisburn, and Derry.

Ryan: What a year. The first full year feels special. It’s been intense, but in a good way. I’m excited for next year.

Alexis: Same. And it means a lot that we’re running events in the run-up to Christmas this year because I remember someone saying last year how they felt anxious over the holidays when there were no events. It reminded me how important it is to give people something to look forward to.

Ryan: Yes, and this year we have a Christmas dinner, ballroom dancing, Clubbercise, archery, a life-drawing class and a new weekend away called The Ultimate Games. The first three months are planned already.

Alexis: There’s so much to look forward to in 2026. Until then, I hope everyone has a good Christmas in whatever way feels right. And if it’s a tough time, I hope you know that you’re not on your own and you’ll always be welcome with us.

Ryan: Merry Christmas everyone! Whether you’re already part of Out & Active or thinking about coming along, there’ll always be space for you.

Alexis: Also, I think it’s quite fitting to let everyone know that you share a birthday with Jesus, so happy birthday, Ryan!!!

A Perfect Escape at Halcyon Spa in Kingfisher Country Estate

I was a very lucky boy this month because I was invited to spend a full day at Halcyon Spa at the stunning Kingfisher Country Estate. I knew I needed a break, but I did not realise just how much until I arrived. What followed was a day of pure calm, comfort and self care that completely reset my mind and body.

From the moment I stepped into the spa there was a sense of peace. The atmosphere is soft and soothing and the staff were warm and welcoming. Halcyon Spa is designed to be a sanctuary in every sense of the word. It offers a beautiful hydrotherapy pool, a gently lit Himalayan salt room, a refreshing steam room and a comforting sauna. Each space feels thoughtful and inviting and the flow of the spa encourages you to slow down, breathe and simply be present.

I spent the first part of my visit drifting from one area to the next. The pool was warm and calming and the salt room was a particular favourite. I took a few quiet moments there to let my mind settle while breathing in the mineral rich air. Moving between the steam room and sauna helped release the tension that builds up during everyday life. By the time I had finished exploring the spa I felt like I was already halfway to total relaxation.

Then came the treatments which truly made the day feel special. I was placed in the expert hands of Becca who delivered The Restorative Ritual followed by Tóg go bog é. Both treatments were extraordinary. The Restorative Ritual eased deep levels of stress and soothed muscles that have been far too tight for far too long. Tóg go bog é was gentle and calming with slow movements that encouraged a sense of grounding and comfort. Becca had an intuitive understanding of what my body needed and her care and professionalism made the experience exceptional. It is rare to feel so completely at ease during treatments but she genuinely created that atmosphere.

Afterwards I was guided to the relaxation room which turned out to be one of the highlights of the day. I was wrapped in a plush robe and treated to a mimosa, a cold and delicious sorbet and a beautiful little selection of chocolates. It felt indulgent in the best possible way. Sitting in that peaceful room, letting the treatments settle into my body while enjoying a few sweet treats, was exactly the type of quiet luxury that makes a spa day unforgettable.

One of the things I loved most about Halcyon Spa was the mix of people enjoying their day. There were couples, groups of friends and solo visitors like myself. Everyone seemed relaxed and content and the atmosphere felt inclusive and welcoming. Whether you want a peaceful day alone, a romantic escape or a shared treat with friends, this spa suits everyone.

The spa uses Ground Wellbeing products which are natural and beautifully aromatic. This added an extra level of care to the treatments and made everything feel even more nurturing.

By the time I left I felt lighter, calmer and more centered. The stress of daily routines had melted away and I walked out smiling. My visit to Halcyon Spa was exactly what I needed.

A huge thank you to the entire team for looking after me so well. If you want a soothing escape that truly restores you, I recommend Halcyon Spa with all my heart.
