AN INTRO FROM THE CHIEF

As we dive into another fabulous issue of GNI MAG, it’s clear that summer isn’t the only thing heating up, this edition is packed to the brim with music, community, travel, and stories that will make you laugh, cry, and maybe even book a one of my recommendations.

We kick things off with Irish heartthrob Cian Ducrot, who opens up about his new album and UK Tour. I genuinely adore this guy, he is humble, talented, and definitely one to watch. Lucy Spraggan is also back with a new single and album, while Devon Sedrick, Prettiboiroq, and Colby Jaxxx add some sparkle with their artistry. And keep an eye on Midori Monet, she’s the queen we never knew we needed.

We also mark a special moment with GNI Appreciation Day — a little celebration we held in conjunction with 2Taps, the current recipient of the Restaurant Of The Year Award. It was so lovely celebrating those who won a GNI Award in November, 2Taps overdone themselves and we also raised £1000 for Mermaids - read all about it on Page 25.

On the advocacy front, we shine a spotlight on Mermaids, Positive Life, and stories from incredible individuals like Ashley Fulton. We also delve into faith and identity with Toni Matosevic and Seamus O’Neill, proving that our community’s strength lies in its diversity.

The stage is buzzing too! There’s a look ahead to the Family

Festival at the Grand Opera House, the cast announcement for The Bodyguard, and a nostalgic chat with Wheatus — yes, Teenage Dirtbag is now officially a classic.

Need a break? We’ve got you. Discover luxe stays at the Four Seasons Carlingford, feast your eyes (and bellies) on the Gourmet Boys’ picks, and check out our reviews of Fish City, the Belfast Cheesecake Company, and more. Feeling boujee? Head to the Balmoral Hotel, the food, freestanding bath and attention to detail was unreal. Feeling adventurous? Let Gavyn tempt you with his Madrid review

Finally, if you fancy a glow-up, Jo O’Neill tells us all about The Energy of True Beauty, and I headed to try out a skin peel with Dr Bryan at Cathedral Dermatology and Peter Irvine shares the must-have Summer trends to make your space as fierce as you are.

We also have fashion from Primark and much more

So grab a coffee, a cocktail, or something sparkly — this issue is one big queer hug, and I hope you love every page.

Until next time,

Irish singer-songwriter Cian Ducrot has quietly become one of the most heartfelt voices of his generation. Known for his emotional honesty, soaring melodies, and piano-driven pop ballads, he first captured hearts with viral videos and breakout singles. Now a platinum-selling artist and international touring star, Cian continues to connect deeply with fans through his vulnerable storytelling, raw vocals, and down-to-earth charm — and he’s only just getting started.

Lets Jump In...

Your new album is out July 11 – how are you feeling as the release date gets closer?

I kind of keep forgetting that it is getting closer and closer because I am just so caught up with everything else now that happens as soon as the music is done.

However, I am super excited, it’s such an exciting body of work and it is going to be amazing to have it and play shows and go on tours, it is going to be really special. I just can’t wait to bring that part of me, and that part of my artistry to life, and for people to have that album and associate it with me as an artist. I feel like it is more of a mature step and just more of an evolved direction since the first album, and it feels very me, so I am really excited for that.

Is there pressure on you, from anyone else or for yourself, in terms of, is it going to be more like the last album or is it more of what you wanted to put out?

Obviously, everybody wants things to be successful and commercial success is always the pressure from everyone around you, but I don’t think you can really value art on commercial success, so I try to detach myself as much as I can from that. Obviously not enough to the point that I’m not trying to promote it and not trying to make it successful. I think it’s often more the people around you who make you feel that it needs to do something as much as the first album or whatever, when for myself it’s like I’ve just made the best album that I can make and the music that I love and it is kind of out of my control then. I also don’t feel the pressure anymore, as it used to be

your second album had to be successful or more successful or you’re done, you know. Now I feel like it can be your third or fourth album, or you could be Sabrina Carpenter and it could be your seventh so there is no timeline of pressure anymore, especially if you have had success before. I am not in a rush to have success so that I can survive and live and feed myself, so I just focus on making good music that I love and that is the most important thing. But I really love this album and I think it’s amazing and I think the music is amazing, so for me it will speak for itself and it will do what it needs to do. If people connect with it or not that is outside of my control but it will find the right people and the right people will like it and hopefully the fans will love it because that is one of the most important things, that my fans will like the music as well, but I have to make sure that I am also making it for myself and what I truly identify with musically as well.

I am addicted to “Little Dreaming” and honestly listen multiple times a day – can you tell us what it means to you and how it came to life? That song was born from the musical desire to do something like, whatever happens, and not to be judgemental of whether I can or can’t do something sonically and then it was born from this idea of wanting to be more self expressive - to do whatever I want to do, dress how I want to dress, sing how I want to sing, and act how I want to act - basically just that, and how good you feel when you are just being yourself and letting going and not worrying about what other people think of you, so it is kind of an amalgamation of all of these things together.

Were there any songs that were particularly tough or emotional to write or record?

For me on the album my best friend was the most emotional process probably and very vulnerable. I wrote it by myself one morning and by the time I had finished writing it, the friends that I was working with at the studio came in, as we were staying, sleeping and living there, and we immediately set up two microphonesone for my vocal and one for my guitar - and then recorded it straight away after I had finished writing it. It was just one take of the song live, so that is what it is on the record, so it was just capturing that emotion. But yes, I was very emotional writing that, I was crying as it was super intense and real, but it was also just a beautiful moment and it is nice to feel those things sometimes as well.

Is that the normal process for you to write songs spontaneously or do you have to set aside time to be creative?

Well this was during a writing camp, so I was in a studio for a week or so, just every day writing with friends. I was just waking up every morning and we could be working every night until 4 in the morning, go to bed, then I would be up again at about 8 or 9. I was just so excited, I would grab a coffee and go straight into the studio again. This particular song, I was sitting in the countryside on the steps on a beautiful morning by myself, and I just started writing and that is the song that I wrote.

If someone could only listen to one song on the album to understand who you are as an artist right now, which would it be and why?

I don’t know, that’s a hard one. I think

maybe something like ‘Your Eyes’ or ‘Who Is Making You Feel It’ because they are a good amalgamation of the whole album in one song. They have got a bit of the classic 1970’s thing,

of all of the inspiration in one song. It is a good mix of everything. So, maybe that, but I’m not sure, but if I was trying to find a good reason then that would be it.

they have got the folk thing, they have got some crazy stuff going on, they have got the songwriter thing, so it’s like a real mix and pool

You’re heading out on tour again – what can fans expect from this run of shows? Any surprises in store?

I have got my headline tour which will be after the Teddy Swims tour in the summer which I am really excited about. There maybe some other shows that we will be able to add in there as well, we are just planning something really special for the next tour. I think it is going to be very different from the first tour and I want to make something really incredible. It is going to be quite a unique experience for people who come to the show, just trying to make it not as generic as possible, make it real to me and a unique show to me, my personality and my music, which is going to allow us to do some very fun and creative things. I am building an

amazing band, so it is going to be very musical, it is going to be really, really cool.

We have to talk about “I’ll Be Waiting” – everyone knows this song. Is it the gift that keeps on giving, or has the love of performing it faded?

I love it! As long as people still love it I will still love it and it is definitely a gift that keeps on giving. So many great things have happened in my career from that song and where it has opened up doors and connected me to so many things. It is really crazy because it is just another song that I wrote randomly, I just got lucky I guess. I probably have better songs but you can’t control what way the wind blows sometimes. Somebody said to me you can write great songs and make great music and then if something works it is just like drawing a lottery card, it is just completely random. It just happened that ‘I’ll Be Waiting’ was a lottery card that I won and it now just has this life, and I am very glad that I got to do some creative and amazing things because of that song, so I will keep singing it forever. Every time I hear the crowds reaction when the song starts - that feeling never gets old.

How do you feel when you hear stats like 1.4 billion streams, 2.5 million Spotify listeners, 1.3 million Instagram followers –does it feel real?

It is really weird, because as a teenager you imagine, dream and aspire for that so it is pretty nuts! It is very hard to understand that so many people actually know who you are, it is pretty crazy and very weird to have that but I am so honoured that that many people care enough to click follow and hopefully I can live up to that expectation.

The pinnacle of someone’s career is usually winning a Grammy – is it wild that you’re already there, and where do you set your sights now in terms of accolades?

I guess I just want another Grammy or something else. I don’t know, a Grammy for a different reason maybe? However I do have different goals. I think winning a Grammy is so crazy, I would love to get more for my own music and albums, I guess there are so many other things that I would like to achieve and I am working hard towards. I think every goal like that is amazing and building a bigger fanbase and

bigger shows, those goals are just as exciting.

Where is your Grammy on display?

I am actually pretty sure it is arriving today as it comes in the post a few months later because it is all made by one person. I received a notification that it is out for delivery today, so you will probably see me dancing around my kitchen on social media later on today!

Your music is known for its raw honesty –have you ever hesitated to release a song because it felt too personal?

Definitely. It can be really hard sometimes because it can be very like stand there naked. However, I feel that it is very important to do that because that’s the point of art, so I rip the bandaid off and I just do it anyway.

You’ve built a truly loyal fanbase – what’s been the most touching message or moment you’ve had with a listener?

To be honest, every time you meet fans it is just so crazy. I think I find it really hard to understand that people are fans, I actually struggle with that information and almost don’t believe them. Sometimes I think people are just saying they are a fan but they are not actually a fan, it can just be really difficult to fully register. When people are at a show, I just feel like how do I register that this is not a joke? I am really working on this now and taking in that the fans are ‘real’ and they are not just being paid to say that they are fans, they have chosen to be. When you meet some of them and they tell you a personal story and how they have connected with my music it is an amazing feeling. I think really, really, really early on in my career I remember, I didn’t even have an album out yet I had an EP and a mix tape, and I played my first ever show in Dublin after the pandemic to around 80 people. After the show my mum came and asked me to meet a girl who had come to the show so I went and spoke to her. She had been working as a nurse during the pandemic and she said that she had discovered my music and would listen to it every single day after work. She said she was working the longest hours and shifts and it was the hardest time of her life and she was being treated so badly and every night she would just get in her, put on my music and just cry the whole way home every night, for two or three years. I was just like “Wow, I don’t even know who you are” and that blew my mind that I was so much part of this persons

life. I was just meeting this person for the first time but she had listened to every word that I had sang, and I remember just thinking this is so powerful and emotional and it made me realise how important music is, however, it is still hard to register this. I struggle with the idea of ego, because you almost need to have some sort of ego to almost take that in and realise that I am something to people. I don’t know if I have tried too hard not to have an ego and be humble, which is obviously super important and we all should be, and then sometimes I think I lose the understanding that I am important to people, and so its is like where is the balance? How do you give people what they want from you and live up to their expectations if you are also trying to be as normal as possible, which I am. I think I am still trying to figure out that dynamic.

Fan Questions...

Gary Campion and many others have reached out with this one I saw you in Ulster Hall, you were amazing, why aren’t you playing Belfast again, and any plans to?

The honest answer is, agents won’t let me play multiple shows in Ireland at the same time and that is basically it.

Cara McMahon - Who would you duet with that is releasing music now and given the opportunity to sing with someone no longer with us who would it be?

If I had to do a duet with someone right now, that would probably be Teddy Swims because I love him and he is such a dear friend and is just incredible. We have also had the opportunity to sing together on stage and it has just worked really well so it would make sense musically which I think is always really important.

With someone who has passed away, I would probably have to say Michael Jackson, just because of how much of an inspiration he was to me growing up and how his music is just the best ever made, hands down. I love his duet with Paul McCartney, I think it is one of the most iconic pieces of music and duets ever, so that would be really cool.

SNOG MARRY AVOID...

This may be challenging , Ella Henderson, Teddy Swims and Ed Sheeran

I would have to marry Ed, because he is already like a husband, so is good husband material.

This is tricky... I guess I would snog Ella, marry Ed and avoid Teddy which would be hard to do as I am going on tour with him, but in my mindset that would be easy to do because he lives in another country. so avoiding Teddy would be the easiest one to avoid but actually as I am going on tour with hime maybe that’s a bad idea. Lol.

Lucy Spraggan

Celebrated singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan confirms the release of her highly-anticipated new album Other Sides of the Moon, landing 20th June. The record features reimagined fan favourites from her seven-album catalogue alongside brand-new tracks, including the Robbie Williams collaboration “Sober” and surprise hit “Unsinkable.” Spraggan also unveils the emotional new version of “Butterflies”

as a single

and shares insights into her creative rebirth, guided by industry legend Simon

Lucy Spraggan has recently announced the release date for her highly-anticipated album, Other Sides Of The Moon, will be 20th June. Available to pre-order now,, Lucy’s 8th studio album is a collection of reimagined, reworked classics from her 7 previous records, plus brand-new songs; a brilliant mix of old and new Lucy.

The album includes her stunning song Sober featuring icon Robbie Williams, her debut hit Tea & Toast, plus the recently released Unsinkable, which received an incredible and unexpected sync on a recent episode of Britain’s Got Talent. Lucy rushed to release the track, delighting and surprising her fans. Unsinkable was featured as part of the montage following the audition by the choir made up of those affected by the Post Office Scandal.

On Other Sides of the Moon, Lucy has worked closely with friend and mentor, Simon Cowell, who personally A&R’d and guided this album from a creative perspective, lending his 40+ years experience in the industry.

Lucy has said of the album release, “It’s always been a dream of mine to re-work songs from my back catalogue. As I have gotten older, I have developed this sense of self that I just didn’t have as a young person; this sense of identity and confirmation of who I am. I feel that way about my music now too. My voice has changed, I know where it sits now, I know where it belongs. When I listen back, I hear where I could have made it a more comfortable sound, or I could have leaned in a slightly different sonic direction. Well, that’s the

joy of this record (and the joy of growing older, I suppose). I am able to reflect and use what I have learnt to create something different. To take the older songs and breathe a new life into them, to give them a maturity that I didn’t know existed when I first recorded them. An evolution, if you like. There’s something very poetic about being able to look back at the songs that I created as a young person and transform them with a bit of experience, love and wisdom. This album is a bit of that! I feel incredibly grateful to have been in a position to do this project.”

Alongside the album date announcement, Lucy also released a brand new version of fan favourite and most requested song for the album, Butterflies. Originally appearing on 2013 album, Join The Club, this reworked version hears a whole new stunning instrumentation, which perfectly complements Lucy’s captivating vocals. She has explained of the track, “I don’t know why but it has always been a song that resonated a lot with many of the fanbase. I wrote this song somewhere in my late teens and it’s a simple description about one of the most complex emotions; love. Looking back, I can see how young I was when I wrote this from the lyrics alone; there is a really endearing naivety to the words.”

Lucy’s UK headline tour is currently in full swing. The 18-date tour which saw her play London’s Union Chapel last month, will wrap in Bakewell on 27th April. Showing no signs of slowing down, the singer-songwriter will also play a slew of further live UK dates throughout the Spring and Summer, visit her website for full dates and information

Cowell.

Lucy Spraggan started her journey as a music artist when she was very young, performing and wowing crowds with her self-penned tracks at every open mic and acoustic night in her hometown. In 2012, she entered the X Factor and went onto be the first contestant in history to score a Top 40 single and album before the live shows aired. She has reached over 150 million streams on Spotify alone with over 400k monthly listeners and sold over 150,000 albums. She is proudly an independent artist, in charge of her career and in control of every aspect of the recording and creative process. 2023 saw Lucy release her memoir Process, an instant Sunday Times bestseller that entered the chart at #2 and has gone on to sell over 15,000 copies. The book saw her reflect on her life till now, opening up about some of the biggest and most raw moments she’s experienced and detailing her journey from childhood to X Factor to finding her balance in her 30s.

sedrick

Out artist Devon Michael Sedrick channels his inner sass and heartfelt honesty in his cheeky new single, “You Suck”. Inspired by toxic coworkers and a hostile work environment, the track is a cathartic release for anyone who’s ever been burned by two-faced people. With a sound that’s playful, lighthearted, and just the right amount of naughty, the song delivers a powerful message: acknowledge the suck, let it go, and don’t let it define you.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

Devon Michael Sedrick: I love to explore all the sides of myself. There are so many different aspects and parts of ourselves and I try to give voice to all of the different parts. I tend to write from a place that I have a hard time speaking about, and it really helps me understand that part of myself better. My main goal as an artist is to write from an honest place, to express myself as fully as possible, and to hopefully inspire someone else to express themselves more.

How does “You Suck” compare to “IDK” and your previous releases?

DMS: I think “You Suck” really has more of my voice in it. When I wrote “IDK” I was pretty lost and really just didn’t know what I was doing or where to go. I allowed a lot of things to happen without really having much say or influence. “You Suck” is definitely me putting my foot down, ignoring the BS and saying exactly what I want and what I think.

I thought “You Suck” was about your ex.

DMS: Everyone thinks that! It’s not about an ex, it’s not about a friend, it’s about a random person at work who was being an absolute dick, and in the end their influence really shouldn’t matter or impact my life that much.

What are the main themes that you explore in your music?

DMS: Recently I feel like I’ve been exploring my own anger, and other places that I don’t feel like I can speak up in. I’ve been exploring the parts of ourselves that we are ashamed of and try to hide. I’ve also explored a lot about suicidal ideation, and have tried to speak about it in a way that people do not have to feel shame around it. Really I just want us to be able to explore the sides or ourselves that we have deemed as unworthy or “bad”,

because I really don’t think that any part is bad, we’re all human, we’re all experiencing this insane life together, and I want us to be able to talk about it more.

How did you get into looping?

DMS: I have always been a fan of looping, but I didn’t start to play with a looper until Covid. I moved to Los Angeles a month before Covid, and I had all these dreams of collaborating with other artists and musicians here, but lockdown happened and I couldn’t meet any other artists, so I decided to get a looping pedal and create my own little one-man band.

What do you hope fans ultimately take away from song?

DMS: I want people to realize that people suck sometimes, and it’s ok, and it’s definitely ok to remove them from your life or to put them in a place that’s manageable. It’s not always possible to completely get rid of them, but I do think it’s our responsibility to try to arranger our relationships in a way that is healthy and can bring the best out in ourselves.

What music artists are you influenced by?

DMS: OMG there are sooooo many. I have so many favorites across so many genres, but if I had to pick a few I would say: Matt Corby, Tash Sultana, H.E.R., DRAMA, PawPaw Rod, Billie Eilish, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Shakey Graves, and of course Doechii!

Do you have a message for your fans?

DMS: Thank you! Thank you for supporting my music, and listening and sharing your stories and how you relate to the music. It’s been amazing to see how people bring their own experience to the music. I love you all! You’re doing great and we need you in this world!

Colby Jaxxx Hosts The Great BateWorld BateOff!

T colby

he Great BateWorld BateOff! returns this month for its fourth season—and the competition is hotter than ever. For the uninitiated, the hit series features six bold ‘bators’ vying for the coveted title of Master Bator. The new season premieres the first Thursday of May, with fresh episodes streaming every Thursday at midnight exclusively on BateWorld.com.

This season’s contenders include Outdoor Bator from California, Kae Ecstatic from Washington, D.C., Ricky Rik from Seattle, Field of Honey from New York, Parker Woods from Arizona, and England’s own Gooner Sunny. Season 2 champion and fan-favorite content creator Colby Jaxxx steps in as host.

Season 4’s weekly challenges promise steamy surprises, with themes like “Hands Free Fun,” “Post Workout Play,” “Kiss from a Rose,” “Bulge ‘N Briefs Display,” and “Getting Verbal with Yourself.” Episodes are free for all BateWorld.com members, who can also vote daily to rank the competitors. The champion will be crowned during a live-streamed finale on June 5.

Host Colby Jaxxx shares more about what fans can expect...

Colby, congratulations on hosting The Great BateWorld BateOff! Thank you! I’m very excited to host!

What made you agree to taking the reins of the show this season?

BateWorld.com is sort of like a homebase for me. It is where I started my content creating career way back in 2020, so to be able to put a bit of my signature on something as great as the BateOff series, I feel honored.

How does it feel returning to the BateOff stage—not as a contestant, but as host?

It really is a dream come true for me. I feel very excited about being the face of the show. I take great pride in hosting and will be sure to keep a high-energy pace for the show.

How are you approaching your role as a mentor to this new crop of contestants?

I plan to take each contestant under my wing as much as they want to be. I want to make the experience great for everyone involved.

The weekly challenges sound wild—from “Hands Free Fun” to “Getting Verbal with Yourself.” Which one are you most excited to watch unfold?

I am the most excited to see the contestants take on the “Post-Workout Play” challenge. It’s something completely new to this season. And I, myself, am a gym rat and I have had some of my best bates after a

good gym session. I just know it will be a very sexy and horny episode.

What can viewers expect each week beyond the steamy challenges?

Every Sunday after each episode premieres, BateWorld.com puts on a viewing party on Zoom for both the audience and the challengers. Most of the contestants participate and share some juicy behind-the-scenes notes on the episode. I always like hearing those stories. As for me, I love laughing at my own bloopers so I post those on social media when I can.

The cast this season is impressively diverse, featuring bators from across North America and even England. What stood out to you about this year’s lineup?

There are a lot of specific niche performers. We have a contestant that can self-suck, a gooner, a performer that shows off specifically outdoors, a spiritual guided master bator. I mean, the audience is going to go wild for these guys!

There’s a strong community spirit within BateWorld. How do you think The Great BateWorld BateOff! contributes to that feeling of connection and shared celebration of self-pleasure?

The Great BateWorld BateOff! is so diverse in their casting. There is always a gentleman in the line-up that someone can identify with. That was a big reason I decided to enter the competition in Season 2. I had seen men in the first season that I could identify with.

What’s something viewers may not realize about what goes on behind the scenes during BateOff production?

Most people think it’s a live show, but it’s all pre-recorded and the performers put a lot of work into their videos. When I was a contestant, I filmed maybe 20 or more minutes of footage per episode and had to cut it down to 5 minutes. There is a lot of footage that has to get scrapped to fit into the 5-minute time slot each contestant is allowed. I hope to see some extended cuts when the season is over.

Finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about auditioning for a future season of The Great BateWorld BateOff!?

Midori Monet Becomes Miss International Queen USA 2025

MIDORI MONET OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, DAZZLED THE NATION WHEN SHE WAS CROWNED MISS INTERNATIONAL QUEEN – USA 2025 AT THE PRESTIGIOUS ARTEMUS W. HAM CONCERT HALL IN LAS VEGAS A FEW MONTHS AGO. THE EVENT, HOSTED BY THE BE THE TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE FUND, WAS A BREATHTAKING SHOWCASE OF CREATIVITY, TALENT, AND POISE, HIGHLIGHTING THE BEAUTY AND DIVERSITY OF TRANSGENDER WOMEN FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY. FOR MONET, THE MOMENT HER NAME WAS ANNOUNCED WAS ONE SHE WILL NEVER FORGET. “WHEN I HEARD MY NAME, IT WAS LIKE A RUSH OF EMOTIONS—SHOCK, GLEE, AND GRATITUDE ALL AT ONCE. IT WAS THE CULMINATION OF YEARS OF HARD WORK AND SELF-BELIEF.”

For Monet, winning the title is more than just personal achievement—it’s a platform for change. “Holding this crown is a reminder that dreams can come true, and it’s my chance to inspire others the way I’ve been inspired by the incredible women who came before me,” she shared. One of those inspirations was Jazell Barbie Royale, the first Black woman to win the Miss International Queen title in Thailand. Monet recalls, “Seeing a woman like me succeed on such a prestigious stage gave me the courage to believe I could do the same. Representation matters, and I’m honored to continue her legacy.”

Her path to the crown was not without challenges. After placing in the top six at Miss Washington USA, she hesitated to compete in pageants again, wanting to rest and reflect. However, her recruiter encouraged her to seize the opportunity, and a generous sponsorship covered her entry fee. Monet took the leap, and it paid off. Reflecting on her journey, she says, “The biggest triumph wasn’t just winning; it was the sisterhood I gained. The bonds I formed with my fellow contestants are something I’ll cherish forever.”

Monet’s performances in the national costume and talent categories were also standout moments. Drawing from her background as a full-time entertainer, she wowed the judges with a lip-sync performance of an original song she wrote and recorded specifically for the competition. “Being on stage is where I feel most at home,” she said. Her national costume paid homage to her roots in the Miss Washington USA pageant, as she wore Samantha Galia’s costume from Miss USA 2023. The design symbolized Washington’s resurgence in pageantry, and Monet carried it with pride.

As a Black trans woman, Monet is deeply aware of the importance of visibility and advocacy. “Every day I step out as myself is seen by some as an act of defiance, but I see it as an act of love. I want others to embrace their uniqueness and know they’re not alone.” She plans to use her platform to advocate for mental health and self-care, emphasizing the need for self-love

in a world that can often feel hostile. “Loving yourself is a revolutionary act, especially in a society that doesn’t always take the time to understand us. Self-acceptance is our armor.”

Monet is now preparing for the Miss International Queen world competition in Thailand. Taking a thoughtful approach, she’s focusing on pacing herself and prioritizing her mental well-being. “I believe in taking things one step at a time. I’m not rushing; I’m preparing myself to show up as my best and most authentic self.”

Looking back on her journey, Monet hopes to leave a lasting legacy of authenticity, courage, and positivity. “Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, but how you respond and manifest your world makes all the difference. This crown is a testament to the power of knowing who you are and standing firm in that truth. I want others to see that the impossible is never truly impossible.”

Conor Ross Photography

Last month we held an appreciation day in conjunction with 2Taps, the day was all about celebrating and acknowledging the 2024 winners. We hope everyone enjoyed the day, from start to finish everything flowed thanks to Jarron and his incredible team. Thanks also to those you contributed to the raffle .

We raised £1000 for Mermaids, here are some snaps from the day a letter we received from Mermaids.

Sincere

thanks to GNI and 2 Taps from Mermaids NI

Mermaids NI would like to extend our sincere thanks to GNI Magazine and 2 Taps Wine Bar for hosting an outstanding fundraiser in Belfast in support of our work with young people and their families.

The event was a true celebration of community, and the generosity shown was nothing short of remarkable. We are incredibly grateful to 2 Taps and GNI for their generous support, which made this fabulous day possible. 2 Taps not only hosted the fundraiser but also matched the ticket sales pound for pound, doubling the impact from the outset. Then, in an incredible show of support, GNI stepped in and matched the total amount raised including 2 Taps’ match, with an additional direct donation of £500. Their combined generosity created something truly special, and deeply moving, transforming community fundraising into a joyful, real-life experience for our young people and their families.

At a time when visibility and solidarity matter more than ever, this level of generosity goes far beyond financial value. It sends a powerful message of recognition and allyship to the young people and families we support.

We felt privileged to be part of such a fabulous and uplifting event, and we are truly grateful for the platform, the warmth, and the support shown to Mermaids NI.

Thank you, GNI and 2 Taps – your support means the world to us. Mermaids NI

Making Memories: Mermaids House Youth Network Visits Prison Island

Thanks to the generous support from the GNI and the fantastic fundraising efforts by 2 Taps and GNI, young people from our Mermaids House youth groups recently enjoyed an unforgettable day out at Prison Island. It was an action-packed, joy-filled experience that brought smiles, laughter, and a brilliant sense of connection.

From the moment the young people arrived, the excitement was contagious. Prison Island, with its maze of themed challenge rooms and clever team puzzles, provided the perfect setting for fun, adventure, and team bonding. Divided into small groups, the young people set off on their mission, unlocking clues, solving puzzles, and tackling each room with enthusiasm and determination.

One of the highlights of the day was watching the way the teams naturally worked together. There was a real buzz as they figured things out, encouraged one another, and celebrated each win, big or small. The space gave everyone a chance to shine in different ways, whether it was problem-solving, quick thinking, or simply cheering each other on. It was a brilliant reminder of how much fun collaboration can be.

Prison Island was the perfect choice. The facility is dynamic, welcoming, and ideal for groups who want to challenge themselves and have fun while doing it. The experience brought the young people closer, with plenty of laughs and lighthearted competition along the way.

While the young people explored the challenges, their parents and family had a lovely time too. The café area offered a warm, relaxed space for cups of tea, and great conversation. It was great to see people chatting, sharing stories, and simply enjoying the company. The whole day had a brilliant, feel-good atmosphere from start to finish.

The joy, confidence, and camaraderie that came out of this trip were clear to see. Days like this help create strong friendships, boost wellbeing, and build those allimportant connections that make our community so special. It was also a fantastic opportunity for everyone to make new memories and have a genuinely great time together.

We’re incredibly grateful to GNI and the supporters of the 2 Taps fundraiser. Your generosity made this day possible, and the impact was immediate and uplifting. The support you’ve given has translated into something real, fun, and memorable, a shared experience full of energy, laughter, and connection.

The young people were amazing, the teams were full of spirit, and the memories will last a long time. It’s days like this that remind us of the power of coming together, and how much joy can be found in simply having fun as a team.

Thank you for making it happen!

MERMAIDS NI Where community becomes a movement

At the edge of Belfast, a community centre gently hums with life. Young people sip hot chocolate, parents share quiet conversations, and facilitators provide art supplies alongside unconditional affirmation. This is Mermaids House—the heart of Mermaids NI, a community-led organisation supporting gender-diverse youth across Northern Ireland.

Formerly known as SAIL NI, the group began in the early 2000s when a handful of parents, facing stigma and silence from mainstream services, chose to support one another. What started as informal meetups in homes and halls has since grown into a respected regional movement. In 2022, the group officially became Mermaids NI, partnering with Mermaids UK but retaining its deeply local, personal ethos.

Mermaids NI offers far more than a support service. At its core is a vibrant, intergenerational community shaped by trust, compassion, and lived experience. Monthly youth groups offer joy and creativity as much as they do support. Identities are not merely acknowledged—they are celebrated. Young people build friendships, explore their passions, and find their voices. Many return as peer mentors and co-facilitators, shaping the spaces they once entered nervously.

This peer-led model is what makes Mermaids NI unique. Young people are not spoken for—they lead with authenticity and empathy. The result is a resilient, confident generation paying their experience forward.

Behind the scenes, Mermaids NI also drives systemic change. With the long-standing support of the Public Health Agency, the organisation embeds early intervention and mental health priorities into its work. It trains educators, healthcare providers, and frontline professionals to better understand and support gender-diverse youth—transforming classrooms, clinics, and communities across NI.

Crucially, this work is sustained by a growing network of civic and commercial allies. Funders such as MAC Cosmetics, The Big Lottery Awards for All, and the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust help fund programmes, while local businesses and individuals continue to champion the cause. Their support signals something powerful: people standing beside people, even in the face of resistance.

The charity’s greatest legacy, however, lies in the stories of those it has served. Young adults who grew up within Mermaids NI now return as leaders and changemakers—thriving not just despite adversity, but because they were believed, supported, and empowered.

In a region with a complex history of exclusion, Mermaids NI offers something quietly radical: not a fight against, but a proposition for. A vision of a future defined by dignity, care, and courage. Sometimes, that future begins with a warm drink and a safe space. Sometimes, it begins with being seen.

Mermaids NI is a movement where community becomes transformation—and where young people are always at the centre.

To learn more, visit www.mermaidsuk.org.uk or email localgroupsni@mermaidsuk. org.uk.

This work is made possible thanks to support from the Public Health Agency, South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust, MAC Cosmetics, The Big Lottery Awards for All, and the people of Northern Ireland.

Thank you.

LEADING THE CHARGE

In recent years, Ireland has seen significant progress in LGBTQIA+ rights, notably with the historic 2015 Marriage Equality referendum. Yet, for many Transgender people, the journey toward full inclusion, recognition, and safety continues and seems to be heading the wrong direction on an international level. Across Ireland, a range of organisations — from grassroots initiatives to national networks — are working tirelessly to defend and uplift Tran’s rights. Among the most notable are Sporting Pride, the Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI), Mermaids NI, The Trans Resource Centre, alongside a number of local and emerging groups.

TENI is perhaps the most prominent national body specifically dedicated to Trans rights in Ireland. Founded in 2006, TENI’s mission is to “advance the rights and equality of Trans people and their families.” The organisation has been instrumental in shaping key pieces of legislation, such as the 2015 Gender Recognition Act, which allowed Transgender people to self-declare their gender legally for the first time.

Beyond lobbying for legal reforms, TENI provides vital education and training services, supports healthcare access improvements for the Trans community, and hosts events that foster community resilience. Programs like Trans Education and Advocacy and peer support meetings have been critical in building a stronger, more visible Trans community across the island.

helping dismantle the barriers that keep many Trans individuals from fully participating in sports, a crucial sphere for both physical and mental wellbeing. On July 5th they will be hosting Ulster’s 3rd LGBTQIA+ Sports Day at Mary Peters Track in collaboration with Belfast City Council.

Mermaids Northern Ireland is a newer network that has begun to emerge in support of Trans and genderdiverse youth. Inspired by the broader Mermaids movement in the UK, this group focuses on providing peer support for young Trans people and their families in Ireland.

Please

Sporting Pride focuses on inclusion through a very different but equally vital avenue — sports. As an organisation working to promote LGBTQIA+ participation in sport, Sporting Pride recognises the unique challenges Tran’s athletes’ face, from discriminatory policies to hostile environments. Although not exclusively Trans-focused, the organisation places strong emphasis on ensuring that Trans and non-binary athletes are welcomed in sports settings at every level, from grassroots to elite competition. Several of the committee are Trans and non-binary and their accomplishments include setting up the first GAA team in the world to have a Non Binary Chairperson, the first basketball team in Ireland to have a Transgender President and opening many doors for the Transgender community in sports.

By collaborating with sporting bodies, running educational workshops, and advocating for inclusive policies, Sporting Pride is

Trans youth face disproportionately high rates of mental health challenges, bullying, and family rejection. Groups like Mermaids NI offer safe spaces, mentoring, and community connection, ensuring young Trans people do not feel isolated or abandoned.

The Trans Resource Centre aims to be a central hub of support, information, and community empowerment for Trans individuals across Belfast. It hopes to offer a variety of resources from crisis support referral contacts to educational workshop contacts and public outreach.

programming. In a landscape often dominated by general LGBTQIA+ organisations, a specifically Trans-led space is not only necessary but revolutionary.

While these bodies are critical, local and grassroots groups also play a major role. Groups like Gender Jam (focused on Northern Ireland), LINC (supporting lesbian and bisexual women but also increasingly inclusive of Trans women), and smaller informal collectives in Cork, Galway, and Limerick are essential. These groups often provide peer support meetings, workshops, advocacy campaigns, and social events that affirm Trans identities at a community level.

Educational initiatives such as Belong To Youth Services — though not exclusively Transfocused — offer critical resources for Trans young people navigating school systems, which remain uneven in their approach to LGBTQIA+ inclusion.

Moreover, professional alliances like the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) and Amnesty International Ireland have also incorporated Trans rights into their broader human rights frameworks, advocating at government level for anti-discrimination protections and better healthcare access.

Despite the passionate work of these organisations, significant challenges remain. Trans healthcare in Ireland is still fraught with long waiting lists, gatekeeping practices, and geographic disparities. Public debates around sports participation, gender recognition for non-binary people, and hate speech laws continue to polarise public opinion. Often these anti-Trans practices seem routed in sexism as we hear more and more horror stories of medical professionals ignoring the concerns of female patients.

Moreover, Trans people — especially Trans women of colour, migrants, and disabled Trans people — often remain marginalised within both wider society and even within the LGBTQIA+ community itself. Organisations like TENI, Sporting Pride, and others are increasingly aware of these intersectional issues and are working to create more inclusive and equitable frameworks. This work is growing at a fast pace because the organisations are collaborating more and sharing best practices.

As Ireland continues to grapple with its social attitudes toward gender and identity, the work of these organisations is more critical than ever. They not only defend the legal rights of Trans people but also nurture spaces where Trans individuals can live fully, authentically, and safely.

In a world where backlash against LGBTQIA+ progress is growing louder in some corners, Ireland’s Trans rights organisations offer a model of resilience, solidarity, and hope.

The man behind the music

ashley fulton celebrates 25 years of vocal brilliance

Northern Ireland’s most renowned and successful vocal coach, Ashley Fulton MBE, is celebrating a significant career milestone – 25 years of shaping the region’s finest vocal talent. Throughout his distinguished career, Ashley has coached thousands of young performers toward their singing dreams, with 100 of his students earning themselves a place at the UK’s most prestigious drama schools, including ArtsEd, Guildford School of Acting, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and the Royal Academy of Music.

To mark these significant milestones Ashley will host a spectacular concert, “Why We Sing,” at Parliament Buildings, Stormont, on May 9th and 10th, featuring his critically acclaimed choir Adoro – a dynamic ensemble made up of 35 of his past and present students. Adoro’s line-up has evolved over the years, but its hallmark of excellence has remained unchanged. Audiences can expect an exhilarating programme of music, spanning musical theatre, pop, classical and contemporary genres.

Ashley says the past 25 years have been filled with many highlights, amazing opportunities, great successes and it’s a career he is intensely proud of.

“During my career I’ve had the joy and the privilege of working with many wonderful young performers. There have been many notable moments, including the chance to see my students go on to grace stages across the world. I’m proud to be a part of the musical journey of every student I have ever taught, and it has been an honour to see each of them flourish and grow both vocally and in confidence. Their successes, from the smallest to the most notable has filled me with such pride. I’m looking forward to showcasing some of my favourite music at these celebration concerts and I hope it brings the audience as much joy and pleasure as it has brought me over the years. To be able to celebrate this milestone with so many of my students, both past and present will be very special.”

Ashley had the opportunity recently to meet up with

both his first and his 100th student to go to drama school. Conleth Kane, his first drama school student, has gone on to a career as a singer/songwriter in London and Nathan Thompson, his 100th student is looking forward to starting Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts this September. Both of them have credited Ashley with building not only their vocal skills but also their confidence and the belief that they could achieve whatever they set their mind to. Conleth, who graduated from ArtsEd says:

“It’s been a long time since I studied with Ashley, but even now, his words of support and encouragement echo when I feel any self-doubt – Ashley always made me see I was worthy and deserved my place in this very competitive industry, he gave me confidence and has been instrumental in getting me to where I am now. I have a new album planned for release at the end of the year and I am also contemplating taking a step back up on the musical theatre stage, so you never know what lies ahead. Ashley helped me believe that anything is possible, and it really is if you put your mind to it!”

Nathan’s journey is also nothing short of inspiring. Once a sport-loving teenager, he initially pursued a degree in Film and TV at Newcastle upon Tyne university where a spontaneous decision to audition for a production with Darlington Operatic Company sparked a newfound love for the stage. After graduating, Nathan pivoted in his career plans and under Ashley’s expert guidance, honed his performance skills and embraced a new path into professional theatre. His story is testament to Ashley’s incredible ability to nurture raw potential, unlock hidden talent, and inspire young performers to pursue their dreams with confidence.

Nathan explains, “I realised I had found my passion for theatre whilst studying Film and TV in Newcastle so I decided to make the brave decision to change my career plans and seek out a coach who could help me get into drama school. I was lucky to find Ashley and have loved working with him, he gave me all the guidance, skill set and confidence I needed to turn things around very quickly and within one

year under his tutelage I have secured my place at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts– It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride, but I am so glad I did it. Now I have a future to look forward to that fills me with excitement!”

Ashley’s impact on the world of vocal coaching and musical theatre is unparalleled., many of students have gone on to star in iconic productions such as Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Matilda, and Wicked. He has tutored over 500 students to success in London College of Music diplomas in musical theatre and classical singing, as well as approximately 3,000 students to distinction success in graded examinations.

In his role as a Musical Director, he has worked on many projects, both professional and amateur. He also strives to share the joy of music through other avenues by collaborations with figures such as Lady Mary Peters and has performed for Royalty on many occasions. Additionally, Ashley is a music examiner for London College of Music examinations, a specialist performance tutor at Queen’s University Belfast, a trustee of the Ulster College of Music, a vocal health practitioner and a member of the ISN.

Ashley has been awarded an MBE for services to music in Northern Ireland and a fellowship of London College of Music for professional achievement and contribution to the arts, musical theatre and classical singing. His passion remains strong;

“I truly believe in the power of music and the arts and I feel incredibly lucky to have secured myself a career that has brought me so much joy, being recognised with an MBE last year is something I am immensely proud of, but my students successes remain my greatest achievement and they always will.”

For those lucky enough to secure a ticket, the upcoming concerts at Parliament Buildings, Stormont promise to be nights of exceptional music, nostalgia, and celebration, shining a light on Ashley’s outstanding contribution to the performing arts and his dedication to nurturing talent in Northern Ireland.

In recent weeks, I’ve been grappling with some new stats from the Department of Health in Northern Ireland, which should sound a warning bell around HIV.

What’s really worrying is that this report shows that the public’s understanding of HIV - what it is, how it’s transmitted, how it’s prevented, and what living with it today actually looks like – is declining. In 2024. Decades after we’ve had effective treatment. Years after “Undetectable=Untransmittable” became a scientific fact. At a time when eliminating new HIV transmissions by 2030 is in our sights. The report is a highly respected Northern Ireland Health Survey and includes a specific section on HIV awareness in 2023/24.

Some of the statistics are not just concerning, they’re dangerous.

Let’s talk about the numbers

Only 87% of people in Northern Ireland say they’ve heard of HIV. That’s down from 94% five years ago. Among 16–34 year-olds - the generation you might expect to be the most clued in on sexual health –it’s as low as 82%.

Let’s sit with that for a second. Nearly 1 in 5 young adults in Northern Ireland don’t even know what HIV is.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg on basic sexual health knowledge.

• Less than 1 in 3 know that for people living with HIV and on effective treatment there is no risk of sexual transmission (known as U=U).

• Almost 1 in 4 still think HIV can be transmitted through spitting.

• Nearly 1 in 10 think it can be transmitted by kissing.

• Only 17% have heard of PrEP,

Why the HIV conversation is slipping and why that should worry every one of us

the HIV prevention medication.

These aren’t just small misunderstandings. These are myths that destroy confidence, perpetuate stigma, and stop people from getting tested or accessing life-saving prevention. And we are seeing that play out in real time.

Most importantly, this lack of awareness and understanding puts forward a very real chance that HIV numbers could start to rise again –just when we have a zero goal in our sights.

Stigma is alive and well

Let’s not kid ourselves - stigma is still the biggest obstacle to progress.

When this survey asked respondents what words come to mind when they hear “HIV,” those who had heard of HIV responded with: AIDS. Death. Illness. Sex.

More than 70% said people living with HIV face negative judgement. Over half agreed they probably feel ashamed.

I don’t blame people for these associations. I blame decades of silence, patchy sexual health education, and an absence of awareness campaigns.

I also blame under-investment in community and voluntary organisations who do this work daily and are now facing extinction – that’s us.

This is about all of us

And yes, I mean all of us. HIV is not a “gay man’s issue”, but gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men remain disproportionately impacted and still carry the burden of stigma. HIV does not discriminate. Ignorance

does.

And this ignorance is growing, not shrinking. If we don’t act now, we risk reversing the progress we’ve made over 40 years. We risk losing the momentum needed to reach zero new transmissions by 2030. We risk leaving a new generation vulnerable and ill-equipped.

So, what do we need?

We need to stop pretending this issue is “sorted” or “historic” or that “it doesn’t affect me.” We need to keep the foot down on the pedal of education and awareness.

Positive Life is doing all it can. But our work is constantly under threat.

We are hanging on by a thread. And I say that with no drama - just brutal honesty.

We need:

• Public education that matches the scale of the problem.

• Government-backed awareness campaigns to replace fear with fact.

• Funding that sees HIV support services as part of the health service, not an afterthought.

• Political will to finish what we started: ending new transmissions by 2030.

Because make no mistake - every new case of HIV costs. It costs the NHS. It costs the person diagnosed. It costs all of us in lost potential, lost opportunity, and prolonged stigma. But here’s the truth: the work we do saves the health service money - now and in the long term.

Every new HIV diagnosis leads to a lifetime of treatment that can cost upwards of £400,000 per person. Prevention, early diagnosis, and

mental health support are not just the right thing to do - they’re economically sound.

For context, the cost of HIV medication alone for one person is enough to core fund Positive Life for almost four years. That’s four years of education, testing outreach, therapy, stigma reduction, and community support - all of which reduce hospital visits, improve medication adherence, and ease pressure on frontline health services.

We aren’t a cost to the systemwe’re part of the solution. 80% of our new referrals come through health care settings – people we help are kept out of crisis. We take some of the most vulnerable people in our community and make sure they don’t fall through the cracks.

If we vanish, that burden won’t go away - it will fall squarely on other parts of the health system, at a much higher price.

So yes, we need money. But more than that, we need people to understand the value - financial and human - of what we deliver every day.

Let’s not lose this fight because we stopped talking about it.

Let’s choose to respond with empathy. With facts. With action. Let’s not look back in ten years and ask why we didn’t do more to end HIV.

McConnell’s Irish Whisky launches rare Cognac Cask Finish to complete 5-Year-Old Series

McConnell’s Irish Whisky, one of Belfast’s most historic whiskey brands, is proud to unveil its new 5-YearOld Cognac Cask Finish, the final release in its 5-Year-Old Series.

This distinctive new release is a harmonious blend of Irish Malt and Irish Grain Whiskeys, aged for five years in first-fill Bourbon casks before undergoing a finishing period in Cognac casks, hand-selected by McConnell’s Master Distiller, Graeme Millar. Cognac cask finishes are exceptionally rare in Irish whiskey, making this release a standout in McConnell’s core range. For Master Distiller Graeme Millar, that rarity was part of the appeal: “With the Cognac Cask Finish, we wanted to do something that truly sets us apart,” Millar explains. “Cognac casks aren’t a traditional choice for Irish Whiskey, but that’s exactly why we pursued them. They offer a luxurious sweetness and unexpected depth, layers of soft fruit, gentle spice, and a velvety finish that perfectly complement our blend.”

This spirit of exploration is matched by a deep respect for the brand’s origins.

“This release is a true blend of innovation and heritage,” Millar adds. “By drawing on the rich legacy of the Cognac region, a tradition of craftsmanship that mirrors our own, we’ve created something that honours our 18th-century roots, but that also pushes the boundaries of what’s expected from Irish whiskey. Revived in 2020 by Belfast Distillery Company, McConnell’s is now on a mission to restore its legacy, blending centuries-old heritage with contemporary craft to reestablish itself as a global force in Irish whiskey.

former PSNI OFFICER guilty of lgbtq harrassment campaign

A former officer with the Police Service of Northern Ireland has been found guilty of harassing a serving LGBTQ colleague over a prolonged two-year period. Gordon Downey, an outspoken anti-LGBTQ activist, targeted officer Paul Bloomer in a sustained campaign of homophobic abuse. Downey has been fined £2,000, ordered to pay £500 in compensation, and issued a three-year restraining order following his guilty plea

Anti LGBTQ activist and former Police Officer Gordon Downey has been sentenced after pleading guilty to harassing Paul Bloomer - a serving Police officer, between 27th August 2022 and 17th October 2024. The case was heard at Coleraine Magistrates Court, Northern Ireland on the 29th April 2025, by District Judge Peter King. Downey was sentenced in Coleraine Magistrates Court on 9th May 2025. Where Judge King ordered Downey to pay a £2000 fine, £500 compensation order and a 3 year restraining order, the Judge stated that a message needed to sent that online abuse can have significant impact on victims, he described Downey’s conduct as “lunacy”.

Paul is a serving Police Constable and prominent member of the LGBTQ community in Northern Ireland. Paul Bloomer served as Co-Chair of the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s (PSNI) LGBT+ Network from 2017-2023, Communications Director of the UK National LGBT+ Police Network and a trustee of Belfast Pride. Paul also set up a UK wide intersectionality Working Group which aimed to improve representation of Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority people in Police LGBT+ staff networks. Paul has spoken internationally at policing conferences in Europe and North America and is recognised as a leading figure in driving LGBTQ inclusion efforts in UK Policing.

Downey subjected Paul to over 2 years of homophobic and transphobic abuse. In the time

he plead guilty to, Downey published hundreds of posts containing sickening homophobic and transphobic abuse targeted at Paul as well as submitting numerous complaints to PSNI’s Professional Standards Department. Downey also posted hundreds of discriminatory and inflammatory pieces of content about trans people, Muslim people and Black people, as well as misogynistic commentary. Downey’s profile picture on X (formerly Twitter) in 2023 depicted a swastika composed of ‘Progress’ LGBTQ pride flags, a symbol widely recognised as an attempt to mock and intimidate LGBTQ people.

In Court Downey was represented by a King’s Counsel. His defense was assisted by former PSNI Professional Standards Chief Inspector Jon Burrows. On his X account former CI Burrows has been a vocal defender of the PSNI, Burrows praised PSNI for their decision to withdraw from participation in LGBTQ Pride events. Burrows has described LGBTQ Pride events as “political and contentious”. Burrows has also voiced support for ‘gender critical’ positions.

Downey has links to the anti LGBTQ group Fair Cop run by Harry Miller, interacting with them across nearly 500 posts, many of them relating to Paul Bloomer. In 2020 Fair Cop promoted a social media campaign #SayYesToHate. Fair Cop Tweeted out supportive messages for Downey in October 2024 and in the days leading up to the court date. On the 26th April 2025 Fair Cop posted, “Next week, Harry is travelling to Belfast to help challenge the unhinged, government funded nob in the criminal court.” Miller did not appear in court on the day of Downey’s conviction.

Speaking after the sentencing Paul said, “Gordon Downey subjected me to over 2 years of homophobic abuse, this wasn’t just online, it was also through complaints made to my workplace, this left me feeling that I had nowhere safe & caused me significant harm. I firmly believe that Gordon

Downey did not act alone, and I’m calling on the Police Service of Northern Ireland to ensure that all individuals who aided or enabled his harassment are held accountable.

I was targeted because I’m a queer person who stood up to advocate for the rights of LGBTQ people to be included & respected by policing institutions. Trans & non-binary people are some of the most vulnerable & marginalised people in society, standing up for them has been the honour of my life, despite what I’ve been through I’ll never change my stance on defending marginalised & vulnerable people. Hate must always be opposed. In Northern Ireland we have had enough of hate, it has no place here anymore.

This case wasn’t just about criminal harassment; it was about fighting to be yourself in public life. Every LGBTQ person in Northern Ireland has the right to live & love openly, freely, and without fear. We are protected by law, and no one should face harassment or discrimination for being who they are. The LGBTQ community is built on love and we are survivors; we’ve faced hatred many times and we’re still here. By standing up, speaking out, and supporting one another, we ensure that love and justice prevail.

This victory over hate, belongs to the entire LGBTQ community, I hope it inspires others to stand against hate in all its forms. Justice is possible, but we must have the courage to demand it. If you are a victim of hate, know that you are not alone. You have the power to speak out & report it, the strength to fight, and a community ready to stand with you. My community supported me through this and I’m so grateful for them. Always remember this, the truth is great and shall prevail, love is the greatest truth of all and love always wins.”

WHEATUS Playing the debut album in full... and more!

Dust off your low-rise jeans and grab your discman—Wheatus are back, and they’re bringing all the early 2000s angst with them. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of their self-titled debut album, the band behind the cult classic “Teenage Dirtbag” are heading to Dublin and Belfast this November for two nights of throwback pop-rock brilliance. With their debut album performed in full and fan favourites on the setlist, this is one tour that promises to be as iconic as the era it came from.

It’s been 25 years since the release of “Teenage Dirtbag”, and somehow Wheatus’ now iconic debut single is arguably the biggest it’s ever been. And to celebrate this milestone, the band are returning to the UK and Ireland in November / December 2025 - playing their debut album in its entirety each night.

The last few years have been a true whirlwind for the band. In 2022, Teenage Dirtbag became the cornerstone of a huge TikTok movement. The “Teenage Dirtbag photos” trend has now been embraced by nearly a million people, including celebrities such as Madonna, Lady Gaga, Mark Ruffalo, Lil Nas X, Jon Bon Jovi, Chevy Chase, and countless others, resulting in the hashtag #teenagedirtbag being viewed over 2 BILLION

times worldwide. And if that wasn’t enough, in 2023, it surprised everyone again by re-entering the UK Top 40 charts.

Against all odds, this fresh frenzy around the 25-year-old anthem has led the band to recently perform on some of the most prestigious stages of their career: Wheatus have recently shared club, arena & festival line-ups across the world with the likes of Alice Cooper, Blondie, Busted, Everclear, Hoobastank, Living Colour, Phantom Planet, The Wallflowers, Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional, The 1975, Muse, Jack White, Blink-182, Paramore, Coheed & Cambria, and so many more. In 2023, Wheatus embarked on what might have been an unprecedented 47 date tour of the UK and Ireland that was only a few tickets shy of completely sold out. They performed at Download Festival 2024 to an audience of over 20,000. Brendan B Brown also squeezed in a “Dirtbags Across America” tour, where he played intimate acoustic shows in 49 of the 50 states (Alaska - sorry, working on it). Most recently, Wheatus did massive tours of both the USA and UK with their old friends Bowling For Soup, to some of the largest sold out crowds both bands have seen in their entire careers. The final night of their upcoming tour will be a truly special gig with

After their 2020 plans were foiled by you-knowwhat, Wheatus are committing every waking moment of 2025 to traveling the world to celebrate the anniversary of their debut album that still means so much to so many. In addition to playing their full debut album each night they’ll also be taking fan requests for any other favourites from their threedecade career - a ritual they’ve upheld at headline shows for almost 20 years now. It’s a joy to behold. See for yourself.

Whether you’ve been a lifelong Dirtbag or only discovered Wheatus through TikTok, this is your chance to experience a band whose legacy has only grown louder with time. With an electrifying live show, a setlist packed with nostalgia, and a quarter-century of stories to celebrate, their return to Belfast’s Limelight 1 on November 24th is set to be a highlight of the year. Don’t miss the chance to sing along—bad haircut, band tee and all.

BIG DAY >>>

So tell us how you met, were you single for a long time before you started dating?

We met in 2021 online, as most lockdown restrictions had started to relax. We’d both been on a handful of unsuccessful first dates so honestly we weren’t expecting much. I (Simon) almost cancelled as I was putting on two shows that weekend and was flat out. We met in a cafe in Hillsborough called ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ and hit it off straight away. I remember Nathan saying that he wasn’t expecting to be as interested in me as he was! After the date we messaged and met again that evening for a McFlurry - but it was almost two weeks after that when we’d next see each other as Nathan caught the flu. After that, when we went for a walk round Clare Glen, there was no turning back!

How long after you started dating did it take to pop the question, was it an immediate yes ? And who asked who?

After we’d been together for just over a year, Nathan moved into my house in Lurgan (the day after he passed his driving test!). When we met, Nathan had just graduated so we waited until he’d learnt to drive and got sorted with a job as we both wanted to be fairly independent financially and not relying on each other to get by too much. When living together was going well, we naturally started talking about the next steps and threw around a few ideas about engagement rings. It was summer 2023 by this point, and there was a lot coming up - our two year anniversary, Nathan’s birthday, my birthday and a holiday to Lake Como. Nathan knew a proposal was coming but he didn’t know when. On our first full day in Lake Como, a spot we both love, I took him to a special spot in the middle of the Lake where I had arranged a photographer through Flytography to capture the big moment. It POURED. And when I say it poured - there was thunder and lightning. In the photos there was no lake, and no mountains, just grey sky, but it’s the best story and we had the best day celebrating afterwards. Of course, Nathan said yes and we laughed about how bad the weather was. We got some amazing photos in the town of Bellagio and at the lake front. That evening we went for dinner at a gorgeous restaurant with a terrace and had to move inside to avoid golf ball sized hail stones - it was quite the day!

Tell us about your BIG DAY , location, amount of guests etc.

We got married on 26th October in the Marketplace Theatre, in Armagh. We’re both big thespians and

the management at the theatre were really happy to accommodate us because we’ve put on so many shows in the past. I run a theatre group in Lurgan and Nathan loves being onstage too, so it made sense to get married somewhere that not just us, but our friends and families regularly share in happy times together. We also absolutely love Autumn and Halloween so that played into it and there were lots of pumpkins and autumnal table centres. The guys at the theatre decorated the auditorium with a massive festoon light chandelier and brought in these incredible screens to decorate the stage. Avril Hawthorne from Humanists NI performed the ceremony and everyone said how personal it was. We had friends from our theatre group perform as a small choir of about 12. They sang Space Man by Sam Ryder (we’re both Eurovision fans), Exist for Love by Aurora and You Belong to Me by Patsy Cline (our favourite love songs) and It’s The Way You Make Me Feel by Steps (I’m a big fan, and why not haha!). Instead of traditional readings our friends Jordon and Sarah did a rhyming presentation to pictures of us both, and our mum’s helped us ‘tie the knot’. We got our photos taken in Clare Glen wood and hired a Ford Anglia (Harry Potter car) to take us there and back, while our family and friends enjoyed cocktails and canapes. There was a LEGO minifigure table where guests could build their own minifigure creations. We had 160 guests and for our entertainment in the evening our friends from RPNI events performed their Donna & The Dynamos ABBA Tribute on the stage then we went outside and lit sparklers while our DJ, Darren from Northern Lights set up for the evening disco. He also provided a Taboo Donut Wall as part of his package, along with a crisp wall, for which he sourced Fright Bitesour favourite! During the gig, RPNI events made a second appearance as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus. The whole thing was just so much fun.

What about the food and drink?

Everyone loved that they were allowed to have a drink during the ceremony - and it helped encourage the participation and applause that we wanted with it being in a theatre. After the ceremony, each of our guests had a cocktail or a pint voucher and the bar managers from the Hole in the Wall put together some amazing cocktails for the occasionAn Orchard Meadow, which contained apple liqueur, A Pumpkin Spiced Old Fashioned, and a Pumpkin Spiced White Russian. They also put together a ‘two fruits’ mocktail! The food was provided by Old Barn Catering, who were second to none. I was really worried about fitting our guests in the theatre bar

area for food, but Peter from Old Barn alleviated any concerns almost instantly. I contacted three caterers in total - one told me to call back in two weeks, and another, based in Banbridge, told me Armagh was too far! When I rang Peter, he went to the theatre the next day, liaised with the manager and came back to me with a fantastic menu and table/seating hire quote - it was such a relief. As part of their package, they provided an amazing array of 4 canapes for after the ceremony (which we served with our cake which we cut straight away), a fantastic three course dinner - we went for brie, followed by a mediterranean chicken dish with garlic cubed potatoes and fresh veg, and a trio of our favourite desserts - apple crumble, brownie and creme brulee. The Hole In The Wall provided wine and prosecco and our glasses were never empty. In the evening Old Barn also provided pulled pork and apple sauce baps as well as nachos, salsa and cheese. Nathan’s mum works at Tori’s Bakery in Royal Hillsborough and they did a three tiered cake as well as some extra - we went for plain jam and buttercream, chocolate with chocolate ganache and pumpkin with cream cheese frosting. It sat beautifully on display in a pumpkin shaped carriage. Everyone commented on how good the food was and we’re really glad we didn’t go for a traditional dinner - that’s not really our thing!

Were there any hiccups or did all go to plan?

Of course - no such thing as the perfect wedding without a hitch! When we were more than halfway to the theatre, I realised that I had forgotten the marriage registration certificate that we needed to sign with our celebrant. As it turns out, not all heroes wear capes, and Oliver, the technical manager at the theatre met us on the Armagh Road, took the keys to mum and dad’s house and let himself in to get the documents! If we’d had to have gone back the whole day would have been delayed by an hour, but we only ran about 15 minutes behind and everyone was delighted when they were told to go to the bar for another drink! The Ford Anglia was picking up Nathan and his wedding party and it broke down on the way to the theatre as well. At the time it was all a bit stressful but we laugh about it now, and Oliver always gets a big hug every time we see him for saving the day!

Have you been on or are you going on honeymoon?

Yes, at Christmas time we went to Lapland and had a magical time. Our chartered flight was from Birmingham and a storm had been forecast for the

weekend so we ended up going a few days early and stayed in New Hall Hotel & Spa which was incredibly christmassy - like Hogwarts - and Birmingham was great for shopping. We even managed to catch a matinee performance of A Christmas Carol! In Lapland, we did so many once in a lifetime things. We stayed in a beautiful village which sits on both sides of a frozen river. One side is Sweden and the other is Finland. There were so many beautiful sights but the activities on offer were incredible - we went Husky sledding, snow mobiling, got to visit Santa on Christmas Day, went on a Reindeer Sleigh Ride and even got a glimpse of the Northern Lights on Christmas night.

In your daily lives what do you do for work ? What interests do you share and have that are

different ?

Simon is a Special Educational Needs Teacher and Nathan works as a receptionist in a GP surgery, but is going to Magee to study medicine in September. Together we also run ‘The Brick Guys NI’ and put on LEGO Exhibitions across the province. It’s been a really successful venture and helped us pay for our dream day. We both love performing and recently completed a run of Beauty and the Beast at the Marketplace Theatre. Throughout the year we’ll also do a musical concert and Lurgan Panto together. Nathan is a big gamer, and loves spending his free time in front of the TV with his PS5 or Switch controller in his hands. Simon has really enjoyed renovating and re-decorating our new home which we moved into in August just a few months before the wedding, and putting the shows together takes

up a lot of his time.

Do you do everything together in terms of socialising, travel ?

More or less. We have shared friends at drama but tend to socialise in separate cliques when we’re there. We did lots of travelling last year and are hoping to this year as well. Last year we went to Malmo in Sweden to see Eurovision and of course spent a day exploring close-by Copenhagen. In 2023 Simon received a medal from the King for Services to the Community and the Arts in County Armagh so we went to London to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace, and of course went to see a few shows and do some sightseeing while we were there. We both had separate Sten do’s with our bridal parties and love heading down to Dublin together as well. There was also the honeymoon at Christmas. This year we’re planning on a trip to Devon, revisiting Lake Como in Italy and heading to Boston and Salem over Halloween for our first wedding anniversary and Simon’s 40th.

Have you a family, is this something on the plan for you?

No family as yet but we have two nephews who we love to spend time with and keep us busy. Nathan got accepted to do medicine and starts in September, so extending our immediate family is on hold for now.

Tell us who made your day possible in terms of rings, flowers, photographer, cars etc Caterers - Old Barn Catering in Markethill were second to none.

Drinks - Joanne from The Hole In The Wall was incredible.

Venue - The staff at the Marketplace Theatre were so welcoming from start to finish - a big shout out to Vinnie for allowing us to use the venue and to the technical team - Shane, Colin, Robert, Oliver, Chris and Adam for making the space so incredibly beautiful for the ceremony.

Cars - Diamond Elite provided the cars to take our bridal party to and from Clare Glen, and we got the Ford Anglia from Star Car Hire.

Rings - H Samuel in Craigavon were so helpful.

Flowers - We got our own! Wreaths from The Range for our Centrepieces and garlands and

lanterns from Amazon. I made the bouquets myself using flowers from Amazon and twine - this was one area where we really wanted to save a bit of money.

Entertainment - Donna & the Dynamos from RPNI did our ABBA tribute and Sanderson Sisters performances and Darran from Northern Lights provided our disco, donut wall and crisp wall.

Photographer - Harry from Friends & Lovers did our wedding shots on the day and they are fantastic.

Flytographer - Matteo from Lake Como Couples did our photoshoot for the engagement.

Invitations - The theatre printed off tickets that we used as our invitations.

Cake - Tori’s bakery in Hillsborough.

Suits - Nathan got his suits in Next and I got mine in Freddie Hatchett on the Albertsbridge Road.

Dresses - We got our bridesmaid dresses from everpretty.co.uk

Honeymoon - We went through Caroline from Air & Ocean Travel who arranged the entire thing for us and was really helpful when we were worried about the storm!

Celebrant - Avril Hawthorne from Humanists NI

Gift registry - We used Prezola, which had a gift list but also allowed us to put a fund together for our honeymoon, which was entirely covered by contributions from our guests.

LEGO Minifigure table - Magpie Bricks

Favours - I made clay star Christmas decorations in our art department using a stamper I got on Amazon. A few of the kids in my class helped but a big thank you to our art department staff for getting them into the kiln!

Has anything changed since you said “I Do”? Nathan has been accepted to study medicine at Magee and we have almost finished the house renovations - it’s going to be a busy few years!

Anything else we may have missed that you may want to add/mention???

Just some advice: Don’t move house before a wedding. Don’t renovate a house during a wedding. There will be tears!

TRANS &

How Jesus Helped Me Transition

I knew I was a boy from early childhood, though I can’t explain how. I do remember at around five, parading in front of my family with a toy truck piece stuffed in my pants, proudly showing off my “penis.” Everyone laughed. My family would say I was meant to be a boy, but I changed my mind just before birth. Even as a child, that annoyed me. Why would I choose to be a girl?

Iwas always drawn to boys, their games, and their company. Football behind the school, collecting player cards. But I never quite belonged. The girls noticed I didn’t want to play with them, and the boys saw I wasn’t “really” a boy. And I was rubbish at football. From a very young, I knew what it felt like to not fit in anywhere.

I grew up with my mum and grandmother in a small village in Croatia. Gran was devoutly Catholic, so we were at Mass every Sunday. I never understood much about catholicism and couldn’t really comprehend what I felt to be true in my heart - God exists. It was easy for me to read in the Bible Jesus saying that He is God and believe it. Yet I struggled to connect with what I was feeling.

I was fourteen when I realised I was trans, thanks to a few trans guys posting about their transition online. I didn’t think of myself as trans then, rather I finally understood what was going on inside me. I was finally able to put the language to my experience. This was a profound moment in my life that brought me feelings of my burden being lifted. I was able to understand something that was bothering me for as long as I could remember, something that was boiling under the surface and causing me confusion and discomfort that started developing further into low moods, anxiety, isolating and avoidant behaviours. Puberty caused me a lot of pain as it was accentuating the disconnect I was becoming aware of. I started to change and it felt like I was being removed further away from myself. Not myself as a child or as I have known myself; but as a boy I recognised, who very much wanted to be alive and be seen. This disconnect was a great oppression on my mental health, and to a point on my soul. Mirrors weren’t reflecting back what was overwhelming in my soul, so I had to look inward to see myself. There, I felt I did exist, and I experienced the pain of being constrained, blocked away from view. I was there, but I wasn’t.

Alongside myself, this is where I encountered that presence I identified with God, I was taught about. Going inward felt more like falling outward, into unimaginable open space, and there I was, and there God was, and He saw me without the constraints of my body. He saw me exactly as I saw myself. He also wasn’t making a fuss about it. I would just stay there, feeling ok. I was at peace. Feeling God acknowledge me removed the shame and fear I was feeling. I wasn’t a boy trapped inside a woman’s

body, something I had heard years ago on TV that scared me. No, I was simply just a boy. And I had a Father in Heaven who got it and who supported me.

Discovering God in this manner made it difficult to align Him with the Catholic Church which was in a period of horrible controversy, condemning gay people, all the sexual abuse scandals, rich in gold, in the middle ofa global recession back then. It didn’t feel right to associate myself with a Church like that. What I was seeing went against what I was experiencing about God inwardly. So I stopped.

For the next few years, I started presenting as male in some groups in my life. I had nothing to do with the Church, and I didn’t think much about God. All I could focus on was bridging the disconnect between the me I now knew and the me who was perceived by others and seen in the mirror. I started my social transition: cutting my hair short, wearing unisex clothes, and telling a few friends. They didn’t really get it, but they didn’t abandon me either. Still, being known by God wasn’t enough when society refused to acknowledge me. The constant explaining, the assumptions, the microaggressions, it wore me down. I started drinking, smoking cannabis, and numbing myself. Gender-affirming care felt impossibly far away. I didn’t know how to “be a man,” so I copied what I saw: drinking, aggression, rebellion against the society that didn’t see me.

At seventeen, I told my mum. She didn’t react well. There were a lot of tears, a lot of confusion. It took three years before she was ready to really listen. Part of her process was to drag me to a psychiatrist, two priests, and even a Catholic spiritual retreat. Ironically, the psychiatrist was the least helpful, clinging to outdated ideas and asking, “What would God say?” But I already knew. God wanted me alive, not crushed under the constant discomfort.

The priests surprised me. They didn’t fully understand, but they didn’t judge me. They listened. For someone who first encountered God in the quiet of my soul, having that recognition from His representatives meant more than I expected. It confirmed what I already knew: God was on my side.

The following years were messy. I dropped out of college, struggled with work, and kept bouncing between trying to fit in and isolating myself. I met other trans people who helped me navigate transitioning, but faith had faded into the

background. I was in survival mode. Externally, I was making progress, but internally, my mental health was getting worse. The constant fight to be seen, to be treated with basic respect, was exhausting.

Eventually, I hit rock bottom. Out of sheer desperation, I picked up the Bible again. I read the Gospels, and something reignited in me. Jesus wasn’t distant. He was still there, in the margins, with people like me. I told Him, out loud, “If you’re still around, I’ll follow you.” And it turned out, He was.

Not long after, I ended up in the hospital for suicidal ideation. Strangely, it was exactly what I needed. The staff respected my gender identity, called me by my chosen name, and gave me space to just be. It was the first time in a long while I could breathe. I started going to Mass again, even if I lacked a real support network. Coming out of the hospital, I tried to rebuild my life by living with family and working, but avoiding the deeper conflict between my faith and identity only led me to break down again.

That’s when God sent Michael and Seamus into my life. Two Irish, gay, Catholic men who would change everything. They were loud, opinionated, faithful, and unashamed. They showed me that God wasn’t just quietly seeing me from a distance. He was alive, active, and very much on my side. Their friendship gave me a new mission: to make sure other LGBT+ people knew they were loved by God, too.

Living with them was intense. We were poor, suffering, yet alive in a way I hadn’t been before. We moved to Međugorje, a pilgrimage site in Bosnia, to deepen our faith. The pushback from conservative Catholics was brutal. We faced suspicion, hostility, even outright rejection. But through that, I learned what carrying the cross really meant. I was still a mess, still figuring things out, but now I had people who believed in me, even if they didn’t fully understand transness yet.

One woman told me, “We don’t have the authority to change our bodies.” She meant tattoos, but the implication was clear. However, we can always ask God! That’s what I did. I prayed, not for permission, but for clarity. I needed to know if God truly saw me, loved me as His son, and supported me in my transness. Prayer became a space where I could wrestle with these questions. Sometimes I’d cry, sometimes I’d rant, but I always left feeling more secure in who I was. The big question remained: would God help me transition?

In 2019, we moved to London with no plan but faith. That’s when we met Father Keith, chaplain to LGBT+ Catholics in Westminster. He offered us shelter in his parish. For me, this was an answered prayer. While we found some stability, I learned that transitioning through the NHS meant waiting five years. I didn’t have five years. But I had God. I kept praying, trusting He could provide what I couldn’t afford.

When COVID hit, our little ministry grew. I started helping in the sacristy, got into painting and sport, and kept talking about being trans and Catholic. Slowly, life began to move forward. In 2021, through donations from kind people who heard my story, I was able to start testosterone. By 2024, after years of saving and community support, I had my top surgery. None of this would have been possible without the people God placed around me, the friends who carried my story when I couldn’t.

Now, at 28, I live mostly free from dysphoria. For the first time, I exist fully as myself. I love being alive. But the scars of waiting so long for gender-affirming care remain. Every time a news article debates my right to exist, every time someone uses my story to argue against trans people, it crushes a part of me. The rise in transphobia, especially after going public about my surgery, is a constant battle. Yet, I remain committed to healing, to forgiving, to existing in a Church and society that still struggles to see me.

My faith and transition are intertwined. God’s justice, His plan for my life, includes me being trans. Following Jesus taught me not to chase institutional approval, but to stay rooted in Him. It’s not always easy. The temptation to walk away from the Church is strong. But my relationship with God is personal. He’s the one who kept me alive. He’s the one who helped me transition. How could I ever deny that?

Antidepressants and the Queer Community in Northern Ireland

In recent years, antidepressant use has soared across the UK, and Northern Ireland stands out with some of the highest prescription rates. Among the most vulnerable and affected populations is the queer community, who continue to face unique socio-political challenges that profoundly shape mental health outcomes. From systemic discrimination to social isolation, queer individuals in Northern Ireland often find themselves navigating a mental health landscape that is both under-resourced and ill-equipped to meet their specific needs. In this context, antidepressants are frequently prescribed; but are they a healing tool, or a holding pattern?

A Complex History of Pain and Resilience

Northern Ireland has made significant progress in LGBTQIA+ rights over the past two decades, but the legacy of stigma and religious conservatism still lingers. Same-sex marriage was only legalised in 2020, and trans healthcare remains underfunded and inconsistently provided. Many queer individuals grow up in environments where their identities are neither seen nor celebrated, which creates deep-seated wounds around shame, fear, and rejection.

These emotional burdens are not abstract; they manifest as anxiety, depression, and in some cases, suicidal ideation. In fact, multiple studies have shown that LGBTQIA+ individuals are at significantly higher risk of experiencing poor mental health compared to their heterosexual, cisgender peers. This reality is not because of inherent vulnerability, but because of social conditions such as homophobia, transphobia, lack of representation, and familial rejection.

Antidepressants as a First Line Response

When a queer individual in Northern Ireland seeks help for depression or anxiety, they often encounter a healthcare system that defaults to medicalisation. Antidepressants, particularly SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), are commonly prescribed as a quick and accessible solution. While these medications can offer genuine relief for many, they are rarely offered alongside culturally sensitive psychotherapy or holistic support that addresses the deeper roots of the distress.

For some, antidepressants are life-saving. They help lift the fog enough to begin engaging with therapy, building community, or making practical life changes. But for others, medication becomes a long-term bandage applied to unhealed wounds; offered without a real pathway to self-understanding, identity integration, or emotional release.

The Gaps in Mental Health Support

Please note, this column is the opinion of the columinst and not that of GNI or Romeo & Julian

Ltd.

There is a stark shortage of queer-affirming mental health services in Northern Ireland. Long waiting lists, underfunded NHS mental health departments, and a scarcity of LGBTQIA+informed practitioners leave many people without adequate support. As a result, antidepressants are often prescribed by GPs who may not have the training, or the time, to explore the socioemotional complexities behind a queer person’s suffering. Moreover, there is often a lack of informed consent when it comes to medication. Many people are not told about potential side effects, withdrawal symptoms, or alternative approaches

such as somatic therapies, trauma-informed counselling, peer support groups, or spiritual healing practices. This leads to an over-reliance on medication, and in some cases, a sense of numbness or emotional disconnection.

Community Perspectives: Seeking Connection and Meaning

Among the queer community, there is growing awareness that healing involves more than just managing symptoms. People are beginning to seek out spaces where they can explore their identities safely, reconnect with their bodies, and share their stories without fear of judgment. Mutual aid networks, queer circles and body-based therapies are increasingly seen as vital components of wellness.

Many queer individuals in Northern Ireland speak of a deep longing for connection; not only with others, but with themselves. They don’t just want to feel less anxious or less depressed; they want to feel alive, seen, and loved. Antidepressants can sometimes interfere with that journey by muting emotions or creating a sense of being disconnected from one’s inner world.

Moving Toward Holistic and Empowered Choices

This isn’t to say that antidepressants don’t have a place in queer healing, they do. But they should be part of a broader, more nuanced conversation. We need more queer-led mental health services, more education around informed choice, and more access to non-medical interventions that support integration rather than suppression.

Queer people in Northern Ireland deserve the right to reclaim their mental health narratives. They need culturally relevant care that honours the pain of growing up unseen, while nurturing the resilience and creativity that queer lives so often embody. Whether that includes medication or not, the key lies in empowering individuals to make choices that truly serve their unique path.

Until then, we must continue to question a system that so readily medicates queer suffering without fully understanding its roots; and commit to building one that affirms, uplifts, and heals from the inside out.

Face First My Journey with Skin Analysis & Chemical Peels

We all want to look our best and in honesty the face tells all! I’d probably score myself a 6/10 for my skin routine, I do try though like most people I could be doing better. So on my quest for that summer glow I reached out to Dr Bryan for a facial MOT, he suggested doing a skin analysis and light peel.

Before undergoing any skincare treatment, it’s essential to understand your skin — and that’s where a professional skin analysis comes in. Ahead of my recent chemical peel, I had a full skin assessment carried out by the brilliant Dr. Bryan Murphy, who many of you will know as one of our trusted GNI columnists. This in-depth analysis looked at hydration levels, pore size, pigmentation, sun damage, and texture, allowing for a completely tailored approach to treatment. No two faces are the same, and that’s exactly why this step is so vital. A peel that works wonders for one person might be too harsh — or not strong enough — for another. With the analysis as our guide, Dr. Murphy was able to select the right type of peel to suit my skin’s specific needs and im also pleased to announce that even with my many holidays and use of sunbeds over the years my skin was surprisingly good

Chemical peels are often misunderstood, but they’re one of the most effective non-invasive treatments for revealing brighter, smoother, and healthier skin. Whether you’re dealing with dullness, fine lines, acne scars, or uneven tone, a peel can help lift away those layers of tired skin to reveal the glow underneath. My own results? A fresher, more even complexion with noticeable improvement in texture just days after the treatment — and minimal downtime! With expert care and proper aftercare advice from Dr. Murphy, the experience was both educational and transformative.

In a world where filters and fast fixes dominate, it’s empowering to invest in treatments that truly benefit your skin’s long-term health. So if you’ve ever been curious about chemical peels, start with a skin analysis — your face deserves that attention, and the results speak for themselves.

Here are a few words from the clinic:

Daniel attended the cosmetic suite at Cathedral Dermatology Clinic in Belfast for a skin analysis consultation with Dr Bryan. He then had a glycolic acid skin peel to lift off dead skin cells, then brighten and boost his colour and glow. Perfect for a pre-Summer fresh look, which he will compliment and maintain with at-home BPM Skincare wipes.

From Shame to Sacred

One Man’s Journey to Catholic Missionary

I was a lonely child, even with three sisters. Growing up in Coalisland, County Tyrone, I never felt part of the crowd. I was gay, but I didn’t know how to tell anyone or how to be. I only knew how to be feminine, wearing my sister’s clothes, my mum’s heels, making up characters. That was my escape.

My dad was ultra-masculine, everything I wasn’t but he hugged me. Mum was bossy, kind, my first audience. We played games, and I performed. But Irish Catholicism loomed over us. Sexuality was taboo. My femininity? An unspoken shame. So I wore a mask.

At school, they mocked me: “Shamey Woman,” “Shamey Handbag.” By high school, it got worse. It stuck like tar. Deep down, I knew they were right, I just didn’t know how to live it. One friend helped me survive: Tony. We danced, joked, and performed. Humour became our armour.

One awful day I wet myself in science class. Everyone laughed. That’s what bullying does, it isolates and leaves you silently screaming.

The bullying continued until my early twenties. I cried myself to sleep many nights. I drank to numb it all. One night, a bully said, “You’re gay.” I was drunk. I said, “So what if I am?” It was out. Just like that.

The bullying stopped. One of them shook my hand and said I was braver than any man he knew. That felt like sunlight.

I’ve always been curious, pushing boundaries. As a kid, Mum warned me not to go beyond the footpath. I always did. That same spirit took me places, good and bad.

One night, I tried ecstasy. The rush was euphoric. But it pulled me further from myself. I was running from shame and rejection. Depression and self-hatred followed.

I ran away to Liverpool then Manchester with my best friend Deirdre. I dabbled in drugs but never injected. I studied drama; she studied public health. She helped me face myself. I found the gay scene. It felt like home. We danced, shared pills, and stories. It felt safe.

By 24, living in Manchester I was deep in the scene: ecstasy, ketamine, coke, crystal meth, every weekend. Orgies in saunas were church. I danced with fire, and loved it.

But it began to consume me. The buzz wore off. I lost jobs and homes. I even shoplifted and did runners from restaurants. At my lowest, I worked in finance, scrolling Medjugorje messages while coming down. I prayed, “If you exist, Our Lady, convert me when it’s time because I’m having too much fun.”

Eventually, I lived in a rundown house, no heating, just an electric heater. Deirdre came back, but I was too far gone. She had to walk away. That broke me.

I had to choose: stay and die, or go home and face the truth.

I told my parents everything, the drugs, the spiral. I came home with shame, stories, and a suitcase. The prodigal son but no feast.

They were supportive, but shame lingered. I spiralled again, sex, Grindr, saunas. Searching for love in the wrong places.

Then my grandmother died. We were close. She always said I’d become a priest. I’d laugh it off. But after her death, life stood still. I was at rock bottom.

Then came the breakdown. I was reading Catholic articles about gay people, harsh, condemning. I was also reading about Fatima, Medjugorje. It was all new. One day it boiled over. I went to a priest with my mum. I couldn’t understand, how can you be gay and Catholic? I was filled with fear and turmoil.

Then Mary appeared inner to me right in my heart and spoke: “You are my son. I love you.”

Everything changed.

I started praying the Rosary. It became my lifeline. Grace came. I went to Mass, then Adoration. Then Confession, and it was like I was being washed inside. My soul lit up. Shame began to lift.

But something was missing. I had to go to Medjugorje. I didn’t know how.

Medjugorje is a village in Bosnia-Herzegovina where the Virgin Mary has been appearing since 1981. Unlike Fatima or Lourdes, these apparitions are ongoing, and that stirred something in me. I felt called there.

At the same time, my sister was getting married. Our parish priest was in Medjugorje and met a woman who offered him her apartment for free in October. “If you need to bring someone, you can,” she told him. Later, he visited our home. My mum told him about my breakdown. He said, “This is how Medjugorje works.” A seed had been planted. “These things don’t happen by accident,” he said. “You’re coming with me.”

That trip changed everything.

That priest helped me find a relationship with God through prayer. Through Medjugorje, I discovered renewed faith, the Father’s love, healing, and the power of the sacraments. And God’s humour. When he took me up Apparition Hill, the priest joked, “Sorry, there’s only room for one queen here, and that’s Our Lady.” I laughed and realised I could be gay, Catholic, and loved.

I was on fire. I got involved in my local parish life, missionary work in Africa. I was finding euphoria in a white substance that wasn’t a drug, it was the Eucharist.

But I was lonely. There were no young Catholics like me. I found myself in traditional circles with views like “pray the gay away” or conversion therapy. I half believed it. I thought if I wasn’t gay, it would be easier to be Catholic. That conflict returned. Old wounds resurfaced.

Then, during another Medjugorje trip, I felt a call to leave Ireland, to follow Jesus more radically. During Communion, I had a vision of Jesus beneath a cross: “Feed my sheep.” I panicked, thought it was the drugs. But later I met Michael Moloney, another gay Irish Catholic, in Medjugorje of all places. We talked over coffee.

He told me plainly: “God’s calling you to full-time ministry.” And I knew he was right. The call was confirmed.

I returned to Medjugorje, wrapped up my life in Ireland, and set out anew, following the Holy Spirit and the call of Jesus. At the Blue Cross, another apparition site, Michael and I prayed. At the same moment, we felt it: a call to radically evangelise the LGBT community.

It wouldn’t be easy. There would be crosses, suffering, misunderstandings. But the call was clear. And I said yes.

We began by travelling two by two into smaller places, Mostar, then Dubrovnik, then Sarajevo. In these places, we used Grindr and other apps that gay people use to meet, not for hookups, but for outreach. We’d chat, meet for coffee, and talk about Jesus, faith, Medjugorje, and God’s love. It started quietly, but it grew.

Eventually, we settled in Split, Croatia, for a year. That’s where we met Toni well Michael did first on Grindr a young transgender person who had survived horrific anxiety, self-harm, and suicidal depression. We both felt Jesus calling us to take him in. What would Jesus do? We knew: He would show love, mercy, and compassion. And so we did.

But that’s when the trouble really began. Lol!

Back in Medjugorje, we’d formed a strong bond with Father Leon, a priest who had quietly confided in us about his own struggles with sexuality. At first, things were peaceful.

But as soon as we were sent out two-by-two to evangelise, gossip began to spread, mostly from Irish pilgrims and locals, accusing Michael and me of being a couple. It wasn’t true, but the rumour grew legs. Some were uncomfortable

with our style of evangelisation. Even Father Leon, who had once encouraged us, turned on us.

In Split, the charismatic prayer group we were with rejected Toni; they were afraid his “trans demons” would jump on them. It was cruel. It was also stressful for us, But we persevered.

We were eventually guided back to Medjugorje with Toni, seeking peace and refuge. But instead of solace, the backlash intensified.

We were labelled “sodomites,” and Father Leon began preaching against us from the pulpit, accusing us of following demons. People scrutinized our every move. The police were called. Michael was even threatened with violence and given 24 hours to leave. But we refused to leave.

A kind Irish priest saw our perseverance and pain. His support was brief but crucial. Through it all, the Holy Spirit sustained us. We had somewhere to stay that felt safe for a time. The tension grew unbearable. Yet, despite the pain, Our Lady’s light shone through. We did not give up. Eventually, she led us to London. We would even get visions of London in prayer especially Michael.

Arriving in London, we spent our first weeks in a hostel in Lewisham. I worked at McDonald’s while grappling with my own healing, confronting old wounds from past drug use. Toni struggled with dysphoria, weed addiction, and anxiety. It was a strain supporting him, but God provided.

Miraculously, Michael prayed to Padre Pio, and through his inspiration, we reached out to Westminster LGBT Catholics. There, Toni met Father Keith. To our surprise he was the Chaplin appointed by the Bishop for the Westminster dioceses. He invited us to dinner through Gods strategic brilliance, and having nowhere to stay he invited us to sleep on the floor of the parish hall. One night turned into six months. Through perseverance, we were each given a room,

and this has been our base for the last four years. Then during the Pandemic our fourth member came Rayne a nurse from the Philippines.

During this time, Michael is studying theology, while Toni and I are training to be catechists. We are being equipped to guide others through the sacraments with better knowledge and understanding.

Through our work in the church, we’ve seen gay men touched by the Spirit in bars, and through our weekly prayer meetings, we evangelize with fire. Toni, having had top surgery, is now a sacristan. His story is a testimony of how God has worked through us to help him transition, and how vital our theology of love, acceptance, and pastoral care is for LGBT souls.

Pope Francis’ words, like “Who am I to judge?” resonate deeply within us. Our ministry has grown not only to those outside but to LGBT Catholics within the Church.

In these past years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of God’s unconditional love and the healing power of the Eucharist. And that’s where we are now: living out our faith with purpose, seeking to share Christ’s love with those who are often excluded.

We now share that message of Jesus’s transformative power, showing that God’s love can reach every soul, and that healing and transformation is possible through the Church, despite all the challenges.

We’ve come full circle from those dark days of mine in Ireland and Manchester’s gay Chemex scene to now being fully embraced by the power of Medjugorje. Our journey continues, knowing we are never alone. Healing is ongoing and its not a one trick wave with a wand.

Hey everyone, this prepride column is probably the most bipolar column I have ever put out! I couldn’t decide on a theme or a clear run of what to feature, so I went with the “a little bit of everything” option. The usual top 5’s and vinyl features with a bit of added queer book, theatre and art, now try tell me I’m not cultured! By the time this comes out, it will be single-digit days on my Mighty Hoopla countdown; I can’t wait to share it all with you again next issue!

Pre-release spotlight: Cynthia Elviro - I Forgive You (released 6th June)

The incredibly talented Cynthia Erivo, known for her GRAMMY, Tony, and EMMY Awards, not to mention her 3 Academy Award nominations, is about to drop her much-anticipated new album, “I Forgive You,” marking a bold new chapter in her artistic journey.

Cynthia has poured her heart and soul into this album, co-writing every track and showcasing her breathtaking vocal range. She’s unfiltered and open like never before, taking us on a deeply personal ride filled with themes of romance, heartbreak, love, forgiveness, and fresh starts. It’s a poetic journey that is sure to resonate with listeners. Cynthia is poised to make her significant mark on the Billboard charts as a solo queer artist, and I can’t wait to see it!

Earlier this year, Cynthia received a “Best Actress” nomination at the Oscars for her stunning performance as Elphaba in the mega hit “Wicked”. She even took the Oscars stage by storm with a breathtaking performance, proving once again that she is a force to be reckoned with.

With “I Forgive You,” we’ll be treated to a tender 20-track LP. This album is divided into 4 parts: a breakup, something new, the deepening of a connection, and finally, acceptance. In between each section, listeners will find haunting interludes, with Cynthia’s angelic voice taking centre stage. The mix of pop, R&B, folk, Britpop, hip-hop, and gospel creates an intimate atmosphere that reminds us of the beauty and complexity of our lives, both the good and the bad.

ART:

Sam Watts - Pop Doodle Official

Have you ever stumbled upon an Instagram account that completely captivates you? That’s what happened to me with Sam’s page! His mutual love for the Spice Girls grabbed my attention right away, and I found myself scrolling through countless posts and highlights. I had to get to speak to him! Based in London, a graphic design graduate, Sam has been sketching since childhood; his mum says it was the only thing that kept him from crying!

He does this passion project for the love of it, the hype that he gets when his subject matter loves his artistic interpretation of them, little did he know that it would lead to him meeting so many of his icons, being hired by them to design all types of merchandise. With strong evidence throughout his entire profile, I think it is safe to say that this guy is a massive Emma Bunton fan, citing her as his favourite of the 5. Having successfully completed his initial mission to gift all 5 his impressions of them (yes, even the VB), he hasn’t looked back!

Despite rubbing shoulders and drawing for the likes of All Saints, Anastacia, Steps and of course the Spice Girls, Sam remains so humble and genuinely shocked at what he has achieved. Believe it or not most of the pieces he posts are available for sale. All you have to do is drop him a DM, he is also available for commissions of your favourite stars.

Check out his Instagram, popdoodle_official, and see for yourself why I’ve become such a fan. I can’t wait to chat with him over drinks at Hoopla and swap Spice Girl stories!

Summer Skin Health: Keeping Your Skin Safe and Glowing

At long last, spring and summer are here—bringing longer days, warmer weather, and a welcome lift to our spirits. Many of us will be looking forward to after work walks along the beach, afternoons at the park with children or our beloved pets, and chilled evenings spent with friends and a cool drink in hand.

For many LGBTQ+ individuals, however, the warmer months can be a double-edged sword -enjoying the sunshine and community pride events, but with worries about body confidence or skin exposure.

I hope that my thoughts this month help to reassure and empower you in looking after your skin and protecting it, but also raises your awareness of what changes to look for, then whom to turn to should you notice something different or unusual.

The Hidden Risks of Sun Exposure

While the sun on your skin might feel good, unprotected or excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, be this from the sun or sunbeds, damages the DNA in skin cells like keratinocytes and melanocytes. Though invisible at first, this damage accumulates over time and increases the risk of skin cancers such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

UV exposure also accelerates early skin ageing, triggering fine lines, sagging, uneven pigmentation, and a leathery skin texture - often leaving people feeling ‘older than their years’, regardless of gender or background.

Make Sun Protection a Daily Habit

In addition to avoiding sunbeds and always being sun-aware when outdoors, you should use daily sunscreen no matter where you live or the season. Many people only apply sunscreen on sunny summer days, but did you know that UV rays penetrate clouds and glass, so can damage your skin year-round?

Please note, this column is the opinion of the columinst and not that of GNI or Romeo & Julian Publiccations Ltd.

During autumn and winter (September to March), a moisturiser or foundation with SPF may suffice as protection here in the UK. April to August, however, or when in hotter climates, try to use a dedicated SPF 30, or higher, broadspectrum sunscreen, in addition to your other serums and moisturiser. Sunscreen is best applied after everything else and before make-up, effectively protecting your skin ‘from the front’, because some cosmetic products might trigger easier sunburn. Reapply sunscreen every two to three hours if you’re outdoors, exercising, or on holiday.

Summer Skincare for LGBTQ+ Readers: Beyond Sunscreen

As we embrace the summer sun and prep for those holiday snaps and social posts, protecting our skin becomes more

than just slathering on SPF. For all of us, adding or trialling targeted treatments may enhance both skin health and confidence. Antioxidants like vitamins C and E can help combat sun-induced ageing, while lightening agents like hydroquinone may address uneven pigmentation. Retinoids, often considered the ‘queen’ of anti-ageing, work to improve texture, tone and breakouts, but they require careful use given lots of potential side effects.

Choosing the right products for your unique skin type and concerns can be daunting. With countless brands and influencer-endorsed trends flooding the market, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. A dermatologist or trained skin therapist can help craft a routine tailored to your goals, lifestyle, and skin type.

It’s also important to remember that not everyone needs complex routines. Teens, for example, should avoid adult-

targeted actives that might irritate developing skin. Skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all, and more isn’t always better.

Skin Cancer Doesn’t Discriminate

Regardless of age, ethnicity, gender identity, or skin tone, skin cancer can affect anyone.

Early detection is vital. My advice is simple: “If in doubt, get it checked out.”

Dermatologists can complete a full skin check when you visit them, usually using a dermatoscope - a tool that magnifies skin lesions to help identify concerning features.

Summer is also a perfect time to support each other. With more skin on show, keep an eye on your friends and loved ones too. If you notice anything odd, gently suggest they arrange a checkup with a dermatologist or their GP - it could be life-saving!

Checking Your Skin with Confidence

Some LGBTQ+ people might feel uncomfortable or unsure about skin checks - possibly due to previous negative experiences in healthcare or because of struggles with their body image. At specialist skin clinics like my own in Belfast, we are committed to providing compassionate and inclusive care for all patients. But you can consider starting your skin checks at home.

Here’s how to perform a ‘self’ skin check that hopefully works for all:

Create a Comfortable Environment

One:

Choose a well-lit room with a full-length and

handheld mirror. If you prefer, ask a trusted partner or friend to help—especially for hard-to-see areas.

Two:

Check Every Part of Your Body. Skin cancers can develop anywhere. Pay close attention to changing, painful, bleeding or non-healing skin lesions on:

• The scalp (use fingers or a comb to part your hair)

• Under breasts, around surgical scars, and in folds of skin

• Soles, palms, between fingers and toes

• Genital and anal areas - often overlooked, but just as important

Three:

Use the ABCDE Rule. When checking moles or pigmented marks, look for:

A – Asymmetry: One side doesn’t match the other

B – Border: Irregular edges

C – Colour: Uneven, multiple or new colours

D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm or growing lesions (although melanomas can be smaller)

E – Evolving: Changes in size, shape, colour, or new symptoms like

Also watch for “ugly duckling” moles—ones that don’t resemble your others.

Four:

Don’t Stay Silent

If something feels off, say something. Your concerns are very valid, so speak to your GP or a Dermatologist. Skin health is part of your overall health, and it’s for everyone, so don’t neglect it.

Final Thoughts

As we look forward to the bright, open-air months ahead, embrace your skin and look after it. Caring for your skin is an important part of caring for yourself, right?

Choose the right skincare products for you, be safe in the sun, perform regular skin checks and don’t be afraid to seek help when something isn’t right. Looking after your skin isn’t vanity. It’s health.

Radiant From Within: The Energy of True Beauty

In a world brimming with beauty trends and ever-changing routines, there’s a timeless truth we often forget: beauty is energy. Not just in the poetic sense— but in the real, tangible way our bodies, our thoughts, and even our skincare choices affect the vibration we carry.

Our bodies are not just physical forms—they are energy systems. Every cell, every heartbeat, every breath is a current of life-force energy in motion. When that energy is nourished—through positive thoughts, natural products, and intentional care—it reflects outward as radiance, clarity, and vitality.

This is why natural healing and beauty go hand in hand. The closer we align our routines with nature, the more we support our bodies’ innate ability to restore and renew. Choosing clean, plant-based ingredients over chemicalladen formulas is more than a trend— It’s a conscious choice that supports the natural balance of both our skin and our inner well-being.

But beauty doesn’t start with what you put on your face. It begins with what you say to yourself. “You are what you say you are” isn’t just a mantra—it’s a powerful truth. If you constantly affirm that you’re tired, unattractive, or not enough, your energy will reflect that. But if you say, “I am glowing,” “I am strong,” “I am beautiful,”—you shift your frequency. Your body listens. Your cells respond. Affirmations are not fluff—they are fuel.

Tapping into a more holistic approach to health and well-being has taught me to appreciate my body and trust its ability to heal. It has helped me embrace

the natural rhythms of my body and the universe, and in doing so, I’ve come to realize that beauty is not a result of external perfection—it’s the energy we radiate when we feel balanced, grounded, and connected to the world around us.

Energy / Vibrational healing

A few months ago, not feeling quite myself and experiencing a bout of health anxiety, I decided to book an appointment with Suzanne Chalkley at Health Direct NI. From the moment I met her, I knew I was in compassionate, capable hands. Suzanne is an extraordinary practitioner who approaches healing with a deeply holistic mindset. Drawing on years of experience in Bioresonance therapy, energy and vibrational healing, and other complementary methods, she helps her clients find balance—not just physically, but emotionally and energetically too. Her sessions are more than treatments—they’re transformative experiences designed to support true, lasting wellbeing.

I had a treatment of Bioresonance therapy with Suzanne. The cutting-edge approach that uses your body’s own electromagnetic frequencies to restore balance and harmony. Suzanne specializes in using advanced Bioresonance technology to support natural healing and address a variety of health concerns. This gentle, noninvasive treatment scans the body for frequency imbalances and helps restore harmony—activating your body’s natural ability to reset and heal itself.

I spent about an hour and a half with Suzanne, and the session was nothing short of fascinating. The treatment itself was deeply relaxing, incredibly informative, and impressively accurate—it picked up on areas that clearly needed attention. From head to toe, the scan was thorough, and I left feeling noticeably lighter and more at ease, with a comforting sense of reassurance. Suzanne has a naturally calming presence and an undeniable gift for what she does.

PETER

Back again to bring you the latest Interior Design chat and how can we talk Summer interiors without talking about Picnicware! Personally I’m not a fan of the age old ‘picnic’ look. You know the four basic colour options you had growing up, where each member of the family picked a colour that they used each time they were resurrected and stuck with that choice for life (I was always forced to use Pink… go figure!).

For me when I’m dining outdoors I still want the elegance of indoors. Sure, eating outdoors is often less serious and a chance to have fun, but it doesn’t mean eating off of starfish plates! Ive been particularly excited with ‘ceramic imitation’ picnicware, especially this white set by The White Company. In this Melamine set each piece has a dimpled texture, an organic edge and every plate feels hand crafted. The same consideration runs through their imitation glassware, made from Triton it is BPA free and has the look of true glass. Its a little pricey at £10 for just one plate, but for those who use their garden a lot it could be a set worth purchasing. Marks & Spencer have an equally deceptive set of picnicware with their ‘Linen Reactive’ range. Again, It features an organic edge but this time a glaze finish often seen on ceramics with a natural crackled texture. Dishwasher safe and currently £15 for 4 plates, it might be the more budget friendly option. Ive yet to be convinced when it comes to reusable outdoor cutlery, but why not mix your everyday metal tableware along with your picnic plates to reduce the risk of breakages and wow your guests with the luxurious outdoor setting!

A top tip for me is to get creative with serving food outdoors: use chopping boards for serving bread rolls, casserole dishes for side salads and crème brûlée ramekins for sauces or nibbles.

You don’t need to buy an abundance of picnicware and it gives a more homely feel.

Speaking of buying, like many other aspects of interior design companies are understanding our purchase patterns and that we have higher expectations than ever when it comes to design. We dont want garden furniture and accessories to look

plastic & cheap and accept that’s just ‘how things are’. When it comes to sofa sets we want padding and comfort, when it comes to solar lighting we want to be able to see our friends who are more than 3 feet away from us and when it comes to outdoor rugs we want them to look great, feel great and in some cases we want them to function both indoor and out. We want rugs that can withstand the pressures of the UK & Ireland ’Summer’ weather and look great while they work. Im always one to support local and Kukoon Rugs, a Northern Irish born company, have a great range of outdoor options from Scandi Berber designs, Modern Geometrics and my personal favourite the Classic Distressed Rubus rug. Having a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine just feels better when you dont have dirt at your feet. Some of these rugs are so elevated they would even work great indoors for those who have pets or young kids prone

to spills or parties that get out of hand and find the struggle of keeping the fabric clean all too much to bear. The low pile weave is a lot easier to remove pet hair and walked in dirt from when cleaning.

Lastly on the topic of Summer, do any of you consider the place you spend one third of your day in, your bed, and how you can make it work better for you? Ive always been a lover of 100% Linen bedding, NOT because I’m the type of person who usually finds themselves falling in love with the most expensive option… that is true, but I love it because I genuinely am an advocate for all the positives it has! Ok, so it’s an investment, it’s more expensive than Cotton, but Linen isn’t just a

warm weather fabric as most would believe. Linen is temperature-regulating. It’s breathable, which is why it is commonly considered a must have in Summer but it can also trap air and keep you warm in Winter! Linen is sustainable and has natural antimicrobial properties that help prevent bacteria growth, keep it feeling fresher for longer. Speaking of lasting longer in the bedroom (oi cheeky!) it is a roughly 30% more durable fabric than cotton meaning its a better investment and the best bit - it gets softer with every wash! It’s the dream fabric. You can also cheat the first few months by buying a “Washed Linen” option (even more expensive) or simply play the waiting game and have even better bedding to look forward to over time. With more companies investing in Linen options the fabric that once came in only White / Neutral shades now comes all year round in Black, Deep Green, Grey, Yellow,

choose a colour that will work for all seasons in your home and enjoy the benefits not just in Summer but all year round!

The year for me so far has been all about prepping for Season 2 of The Salvage Squad. It’s seriously taking between 5-6 months active work to make 6 hours of footage, which is crazy when you consider how much television is out there for us to binge! For the past few weeks I’ve been sourcing preloved items for the episodes, meeting families and now it’s time for the first makeovers to happen! Time to get stuck in, rip things out, reuse them elsewhere and bring old things in! I always get nervous we won’t finish in 2 days, the struggle is REAL i can tell you! I can’t give anything

away about the designs but i promise there is inspiration aplenty! Wish me luck! I’m wishing my year away for the date you can all tune in!

MARVELLOUS MEAT-FREE MUNCHING!

As you probably know, we don’t include a lot of meat in our diet, and we’re always delighted to find restaurants which push the bar to create interesting, tasty, and healthy pescatarian, veggie, and vegan plates. So here are five restaurants where we’ve enjoyed some excellent meatfree dishes.

Alexander’s & Co, Holywood.

Alexander’s & Co is a traditional gastropub on Holywood’s High Street, serving up a variety of delicious dishes; from small sharing plates and antipasti platters, to classic pub fare and Sunday roasts.

We were invited to try out the Steak Night Menu: Hot Stone Thursdays! Even though we’re not big red meat eaters-we usually prefer seafood and veggie options-Alexander’s were keen for us to come along and try out their meat free alternatives.

We started with a couple of quality cocktails, a Newmarket Fashioned and a Coconut Margarita, and a few appetising nibbles; creamy Burrata Salad with crostini, Fried Calamari with lemon & herb aioli, and marinated Kalamata Olives.

Then the hot stones arrived-what a revelation!! The plant based “steaks” were absolutely incredible; a tasty Vegan Ribeye, and the star of the show, an outstandingly good 5oz Vegan Sirloin, which had the

appearance, taste, and texture of its meaty counterpart, especially when smeared with Alexander’s homemade vegan butter resulting in salty, charred edges on the hot stones. Not only that, but the Bearnaise, Peppercorn and Pesto sauces are all plantbased as well!

Served with a side of sautéed carrots, parsnips and mushrooms, the meal was a triumph-we’d challenge any confirmed carnivore not to enjoy this brilliantly executed vegan feast! And for people who prefer a pescatarian option, the juicy King Prawn Skewers were another excellent alternative.

Bank Square Brasserie, Belfast

One of our favourite central Belfast eateries, Bank Square Brasserie, is a little oasis of French Bistrostyle elegance right in the heart of the city.

With excellent cocktails, the BelFashioned made with McConnell’s Sherry Cask and whiskey marmalade, &

BANK SQUARE BRASSERIE

Le Bijou with Gin, Vermouth, & Green Chartreuse, were fantastic aperitifs.

Bank Square’s passion for celebrating local ingredients is evident in the menu, and the vegetarian options are probably the best in Belfast.

We shared a delicious Whole Baked Camembert scented with Thyme & Honey, with Sourdough Baguette for dipping, and the Smoked Mackerel with Golden Beetroot, Apple, Radish, & Pommery Mustard Vinaigrette was light and refreshing.

For fish lovers, the Roast Coley on a bed of Creamy Mash, with Cavolo Nero and a Caper & Shrimp Beurre Noisette was an absolute dream, and the Mushroom Seitan Burger with Crispy Vegan Bacon, Mac Sauce, Gherkins, Cheese, Fries, & Salad was an excellent meat-free choice.

With its casual atmosphere, attentive service and European Bistro style menu, Bank Square Brasserie is hard to beat for quality and value in the city centre.

KUBO, Belfast.

Born in the Philippines and with ten years of cooking experience in her hometown of Toronto, Canada, chef Nallaine found herself moving to London where she worked as Head of Food and Head Chef.

Relocating to Belfast, she found her niche in Filipino food where she held monthly Kamayan events cooking her family’s traditional recipes and reconnecting with her Filipino roots.

Kubo means ‘small nipa hut’ in Filipino tagalog and KUBO Belfast is a dedication to the Philippines and the Filipino food she grew up with. Traditional and unaltered, KUBO strives to share her family’s recipes from The Philippines with Ireland.

We had a fabulous Filipino lunch at KUBO in the Great Northern

Mall, next to the Europa Hotel, and enjoyed some deliciously spicy dishes.

Pancit Canton

Spring Rolls, or “Lumpia”; garlic and soy dressed Filipino vegetable noodles encased in crispy spring roll pastry, with crab mayo and banana ketchup, and Ginger Tamarind Aubergine; crispy aubergine tossed in miso ginger and tamarind dressing, served with atchara Filipino pickles. Amazing!

The Dairy, Gleno.

We called in to The Dairy in the pretty village of Gleno on the outskirts of Larne, and we were seriously impressed.

Once a fully functioning creamery and dairy, this farm store, butchers and café champions fresh, locally sourced ingredients; from the meat products in the butchery and the home-baked pastries, to the artisanal products from local sellers and the great food in the café.

We started with an excellent pint of Mourne Mist Pilsner from the Mourne Mountains Brewery. The Dairy also stocks local IPA specials, ciders, and has a great wine and cocktails list.

The food menu featured lots of temptingsounding dishes, and we eventually chose the Seafood Roll with marinated pink prawns, white crab meat, lemon crème fraiche, chives, and shredded gem lettuce, served in a soft bread roll with skin on fries.

And the incredible Roasted Aubergine

KUBO

THE DAIRY

Orto: Cathedral Quarter.

Orto is an all-day Pizzabar concept with several locations in Belfast. We visited the Cathedral Quarter venue for a spot of lunch, and received a wonderfully warm welcome.

The restaurant is renowned for its beautiful, wood-fired pizzas straight from the oven, and other all-day offerings such as focaccia, bruschetta, arancini and salads.

We started with some Roasted Stuffed Jalapeños filled with Orto cheese blend, and sprinkled with a parmesan, truffle and honey crumb, accompanied by a perfect Negroni and Italian Margarita.

The pizzas are fabulous: slightly charred, flavourful, and more than enough for two to share, especially accompanied by a fresh Orto Salad Bowl of gem lettuce, couscous, hummus, avocado, tomato, red onion, chipotle mayo, focaccia crouton, and roquito peppers.

coated in crispy panko crumbs in a creamy coconut curry sauce, with grilled asparagus, sprinkled with toasted nuts, and served with parmesan fries was a superb vegetarian dish.

We plumped for the “No 4” Red Pizza with caramelised onion, topped with peppery rocket, pickled roquito peppers, and truffle honey, but we asked for the goats cheese to be replaced with a amazingly tasty, and no

T Hooked on excellence... returning to fish city, belfast

hree Years, Countless Awards and One Fabulous Evening Later…

When a restaurant racks up awards like some people collect houseplants during lockdown, you can’t help but take notice. It’s been three years since I last reviewed Fish City on Anne Street, Belfast — and in that time, they’ve gone from local gem to national treasure. So, naturally, I had to get back to see (and taste) what all the fuss is about. With theatre tickets in hand (TINA at the Grand Opera House was calling), my guest Tammy

and I arrived on a sunny Wednesday evening, ready for a fast but fabulous feast.

A Warm Welcome and a Menu That Reads Like Poetry

We arrived just before 6pm on May 7th, with the sun surprisingly on its best behaviour we decided to dine al fresco. A warm greeting awaited us from Grainne, one of the lovely owners, and Aaron, our fabulous server for the evening. The hospitality was immediate, genuine, and relaxed, the kind that makes you feel more like a treasured friend than a booking with a curfew.

We sipped our drinks while perusing the impressively extensive menu: a crisp and elegant Sauvignon Blanc for me, and a cocktail (of course!) for Tammy. Honestly, choosing a starter felt like an episode of Sophie’s Choice, everything sounded divine. Thankfully, Aaron sensed our shared food FOMO and went above and beyond by offering us a Mini Fritto Sharing Platter, usually reserved for the lunch menu. Consider us officially spoiled.

Starters That Deserve Their Own Standing Ovation

The platter was a crispy, golden dream featuring Soft Shell Crab, Calamari, Cod, Scampi, Tiger Prawns, Tartare Sauce, and a cheeky side of chips, because, let’s face it, chips belong with everything. Each item was coated in a light, perfectly seasoned batter, crisp without a hint of grease. While everything was outstanding, the Soft Shell Crab had me at hello. Honestly, next time I’m ordering a bucket of them and calling it self-care.

As if that wasn’t enough, we also sampled the Barbecue Teriyaki King Prawns, and let me tell you they were next level. Beautifully charred with a sweet, sticky glaze, presented around a bed of fresh salad and dressed in a rich, umami-packed sauce. Every bite was balanced,

bold, and utterly addictive.

Main Courses That Stole the Show (Sorry, TINA)

For mains, I went full steam ahead with Strangford Mussels in a white wine and cream sauce, accompanied by garlic ciabatta that was born to mop up every last drop. The mussels were plump, fresh, and cooked to perfection — and the sauce? Liquid gold. I’d have drunk it straight if I had no shame. (OK, maybe I did mop it up with my finger at one point.)

Tammy chose the Prawn Tacos, which she declared “unreal” before I could even pick up my fork. Naturally, I had to try them myself for journalistic integrity. The prawns were juicy and flavour-packed, the soft wraps were fresh, and the side of chips was again essential. I particularly loved the tangy garnish of (what I believe was) pickled red onion, the kind of little touch that shows the kitchen really cares. Dessert? Oh, Go On Then…

Now, at this point we were both very full, very content, and very much planning to skip dessert. But Aaron, being the dessert whisperer that he is, gently insisted we try the Sticky Toffee Pudding, and let me just say — I have never been so happy to be swayed.

It arrived in a bowl of utter decadence: soft, rich sponge soaked in buttery toffee sauce, topped with a scoop of dreamy ice cream. It was warm, indulgent, and tasted like a hug from someone who can bake. We devoured every last bite like two people who definitely hadn’t just demolished a small seafood buffet. A Place That Knows What It’s Doing (And Does It Beautifully)

Fish City isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a masterclass in how to do hospitality right. The atmosphere is welcoming without pretension, the menu is ambitious without losing its soul, and the team genuinely cares about what they’re serving.

Everything from the sparkling seafood to the small but significant garnishes is executed with pride, precision, and a little bit of flair.

It’s easy to see why they’ve been hoovering up awards left, right and centre. And even easier to see why people keep coming back. Fish City has evolved, yes — but it’s done so without losing the warmth and authenticity that made it special in the first place.

Thank You, Fish City

Huge thanks to Grainne and Aaron for such a memorable evening. You made us feel completely at home (even while feeding us like royalty). The food, the atmosphere, the service — all 10/10. And for anyone who hasn’t yet experienced Fish City what are you waiting for? Just be sure to book early, bring an appetite, and leave room for dessert. Trust me.

Sweet Indulgence

A Heavenly Taste Test with the Belfast Cheesecake Company

Belfast is no stranger to exceptional food and artisanal treats, but few things bring as much instant joy as a well-made cheesecake. Thanks to the Belfast Cheesecake Company and the generosity of the lovely Jonathan I recently had the pleasure of sampling four of their popular mini pots: Galaxy Caramel, Raspberry White Chocolate, Biscoff, and Kinder. Each one delivered a deliciously different experience, but all shared the same unmistakable hallmark of quality: a light, mousse-like texture and a perfectly crumbly base that made each spoonful a little moment of indulgence.

Let’s start with the Galaxy Caramel. This one was pure velvet , a rich but airy caramel cheesecake topped with swirls of Galaxy chocolate, marrying smoothness with just the right amount of sweetness. The caramel wasn’t overpowering; instead, it provided a buttery backdrop that complemented rather than competing with it. The crumbly biscuit base underneath offered a satisfying contrast, giving structure to the airy cheesecake without stealing the spotlight.

Next up was the Raspberry White Chocolate, the most refreshing of the bunch. The tartness of the raspberry was beautifully balanced by the creamy sweetness of the white chocolate. The fruit taste cut through the richness and added a summery, almost palate-cleansing effect. Texturally, it was a standout too, with the same melt-in-your-mouth mousse feel, but an added zing that kept you coming back for more.

Biscoff lovers, rejoice, this one was everything you could want and more. From the first bite, it was instantly recognisable: that warming, spiced caramel flavour you get from a Lotus biscuit, dialled up and transformed into a dessert that somehow managed to be decadent without being too heavy. I could have honestly eaten a dozen of these.

Finally, the Kinder pot was pure nostalgia. Think Kinder Bueno meets luxury dessert — sweet, nutty, and lightly chocolatey with a hint of hazelnut cream. This pot had a slightly more indulgent feel than the others, but still maintained that signature mousselike lightness. It was playful and fun, with just the right balance of sweetness and creaminess.

What ties all four of these flavours together is the craftsmanship. These cheesecakes aren’t just sugar bombs — they’re thoughtfully made, with flavour profiles that are rich yet balanced, sweet but never sickly. The light texture makes them dangerously moreish, and the attention to detail in the bases — all distinct, all perfectly crumbly — shows the level of care and quality that the Belfast Cheesecake Company puts into every pot.

Whether you’re after comfort, a fruity lift, or a nostalgic hit of childhood favourites, there's a cheesecake pot for you. Jonathan and the team have created something special here — a local gem that proves good things really do come in small packages.

Here is an insight from Jonathan Belfast Cheesecake Co started out about 10 years ago when I had more hair and was a few pounds lighter. Back then it was first known as Death by Cheesecake! I always had an interest in baking but would say I’m quite a clumsy person so finesse and careful decoration were out the window. In my last job in insurance claims a friend brought in a Mint Aero cheesecake and when I heard the recipe and method I thought even I could give it a go, to this day I still say if you can’t make a cheesecake there is something wrong.

I started making cheesecakes for family and friends and they encouraged me to sell them and that’s when my social media presence began. Shortly after this I started selling to the public at Newtownards Market where I built a great customer base only issue being it was outdoor , great in the summer but not so good in winter and that’s when I managed to secure a 1 day spot in St Georges as I was still working full time, it was indoor and they supply a proper display fridge. This is also when I started reaching out to some restaurants and retail establishments and was lucky to stock several places, some of which are still with me today.

Over time I increased my days in St George’s and retail stockists grew which allowed me to go part time in my ‘normal’ job and focus on the cheesecakes more all the while making everything in a small galley kitchen at home with fridges stuck in every corner of the house. Over time the business grew and I finally made the decision to go full time with the cheesecakes.

I'm a cautious person so the jump didn’t happen overnight. Around this time a lot of the donut shops were popping up , selling a full selection of donuts and my idea/dream was to have a cheesecake version of this which has never been done so totally unique but with property and utility prices I never thought a shop would become a reality. I finally got to move out of the kitchen and share a space with another bakery business in Dundonald which really helped me grow the retail side of the business stocking more and more places.

The business was growing but then hit a snag when we had to move from the unit we occupied and I could only downsize due to costs so had to downsize production as well, probably one of the downfalls of sharing a space , whilst cost effective your not the only decision maker but in the long run things have worked out for the better, we operated from a small unit continuing with some retail and St Georges Market every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Then purely by chance a shop unit came up for rent in East Belfast , near to my home and in a great location for good footfall, after viewing and on the same day I expressed my interest in the premises and to my absolute surprise I got the tenancy.

It took a while to have the space workable but being close to Xmas my priority was to have the space

workable to fulfil our orders then worry about opening to the public after Christmas, each year Christmas gets busier and busier , I opened the order book back in July and closed it within 2 hours with 140 orders !

The shop finally opened to the public on February 15th 2025! with a queue up the street, being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community I was finally able to add my own camp touches which everyone loves. Since opening the shop continues to thrive so much so I have just taken on a second unit so we can move all production to it giving us more space in the shop and opening opportunities to add to what we already offer, including cheesecake filled croissants and donuts.

I now only do St George’s on a Sunday and work 6 days in the shop. The plan is to work and grow our retail stockists as they are more constant and regular with orders, whereas the shop and St George’s are more unpredictable and who knows maybe down the line if the demand is there we could see another branch of Belfast Cheesecake Co!!

For anyone thinking of going full time at a hobby or business idea , do it , work things out and be methodical. I work more now than I ever did but being your own boss is something different to working for someone, yes it's stressful, hard work but the rewards and sense of pride make it worthwhile.

I am very lucky to have amazing customers both personal and business but also family and friends who have helped me and still help out along the way.

Here is to the future which hopefully includes a win at the GNI awards 2025 !! Everything crossed

Thanks for being so hospitabile, if you are in the area or see the cheesecakes in a local premises you simply have to try them

Arrival & First Impressions

I reached The Balmoral around 3:30 pm on a Bank Holiday Monday. To my surprise, the journey was traffic-free, an unexpected treat on such a busy day. The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with genuine warmth and professionalism. Fiona at reception checked me in swiftly while giving me a friendly rundown of what the hotel has to offer.

standout feature was the luxurious freestanding bath, beautifully positioned in the bedroom itself, which added a decadent boutique flourish. I spent a good 45 minutes chilling in it, it was bliss, next time I’ll be packing the bubble bath or bath salts.

The en-suite bathroom was equally impressive, with a double-sized rainfall shower and dual sinks. Modern conveniences abounded, from complimentary Wi-Fi to a flat-screen TV and in-room facilities for making tea/coffee.

A particularly lovely surprise awaited me after dinner, wine and cake had been discreetly delivered while I was out. It was a thoughtful gesture that summed up the care and attention to detail running

The setting is stylish and relaxed, with warm lighting, comfortable seating, and a sense of intimacy that makes it equally suitable for romantic dinners, family meals, or solo travellers looking to unwind. The waiting staff were attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable about the menu, and genuinely enthusiastic about ensuring each guest enjoyed their meal.

To start, I opted for a Chicken Caesar Salad, simple in concept, but outstanding in execution. The chicken was succulent and well-seasoned. The pancetta brought a satisfying crunch and salty bite, beautifully offset by the crisp freshness of the romaine lettuce. The dressing was creamy and rich without overpowering the dish, and the Parmesan shards added the perfect savoury finish. It was tailored to my preferences with care, which made the experience feel truly personalised.

What struck me right away was the atmosphere: this isn’t a city chain hotel, it’s personal, relaxed, and full of character. The décor strikes a lovely balance between traditional charm and contemporary touches, making you feel at home from the very first minute.

Suite & Accommodation

My suite was nothing short of AMAZING. Generously sized and thoughtfully designed, it featured a stylish corner sofa, a plush king-size bed, and a spacious walk-in wardrobe area. One

through every part of this hotel’s service.

Dining at The Balmoral

The culinary offering at The Balmoral is not just a mealtime convenience, it’s a standout feature in its own right. The hotel’s restaurant delivers a refined yet approachable dining experience that caters to a variety of tastes, with a menu that celebrates classic comfort dishes elevated by skilled preparation and quality ingredients.

For the main course, the daube of beef was a revelation. This slow-cooked dish was everything you want on a comforting evening: the beef was fork-tender and full of flavour, having been braised to perfection in a dark, glossy gravy. I always say my mum makes the best gravy, I may have changed my mind, dont tell her though lol, it was absolutely delicious, so much so that I asked for more to smother the mammoth portion of veg, on the subject of veg, they had just the right amount of bite to retain their freshness.

The mashed potatoes were luxuriously smooth and the Yorkshire pudding was fluffy and golden, serving as the perfect vessel to mop up every last drop of the sauce. The portion was generous, and although I couldn’t quite clear the plate, I certainly gave it my best effort.

Despite being full, the dessert menu was too tempting to resist. I went with the sticky toffee pudding, and it didn’t disappoint. The sponge was moist and warm, with a deep, treacly flavour that lingered on the palate. It was drenched in a rich caramel toffee sauce, paired beautifully with a scoop of velvety vanilla ice cream. A scattering of fresh blueberries and a delicate drizzle of chocolate sauce added a fresh and slightly tangy contrast that kept each bite interesting. It was indulgent without being overly sweet, and the kind of dessert that leaves you smiling long after the plate is empty.

Whether you’re a foodie looking for a standout local meal or a guest seeking high-quality comfort food in a relaxed setting, dining at The Balmoral ticks every box. It’s clear that the kitchen takes pride in what they serve, and the result is a memorable meal that enhances the entire hotel experience.

Sleep & Comfort

After a delicious dinner and a couple of glasses of wine, I drifted into one of the best sleeps I’ve had in ages. The king-size bed was supremely comfortable, the temperature perfect, and the general stillness of the surroundings ensured over six hours of uninterrupted rest—quite a record for me!

Facilities & Entertainment

Beyond the rooms and restaurant, The Balmoral hosts live entertainment, tribute nights, and seasonal events, making it a vibrant hub for locals and visitors alike. The bar is spacious and lively, ideal for catching up with friends or unwinding after a long day.

For weddings, celebrations, or corporate events, the hotel offers several function rooms. The largest, the Ballroom, accommodates up to 300 guests and is popular for gala dinners and receptions. Tailored event packages, professional coordination, and inhouse catering make it a genuine one-stop-shop for stress-free planning.

Location & Accessibility

Situated just off the M1, The Balmoral provides easy access to Belfast city centre and attractions such as the Titanic Quarter, SSE Arena, and the Lisburn Road’s cafés and boutiques. Ample free parking is a major bonus. Business travellers will appreciate proximity to both Belfast International Airport and George Best Belfast City Airport, while enjoying a quieter base than a city-centre hotel.

Final Thoughts

My stay at The Balmoral Hotel was genuinely exceptional. From the beautiful suite and incredible food to the thoughtful service and vibrant atmosphere,

every element exceeded my expectations. A heartfelt thank-you to the management and staff for being so welcoming and accommodating, you truly made the visit memorable.

Whether you’re booking a romantic getaway, a family celebration, or a professional event, The Balmoral delivers comfort, style, and service in equal measure. If you haven’t yet experienced this Belfast gem, now is the time.

S Madrid A City break

pain has always been a county which not only excited me but brought out all the life within me from my very first holiday to Ibiza back in 1997. Over the years regardless if its been mainland Spain or some of the many Spanish islands I have visited over my life I have always felt at home from the very second I got off the plane. I will confess now that I am not always a fan of city break as a form of holiday as I much prefer a beach style holiday which to me screams relation so for me Madrid was going to challenge my idea of what a Spanish holiday is or should be.

I can safely say Madrid was no different when I visited it a good few years ago. Spain itself is a very diverse country with a real difference in climate from north to south east to west. You will find the northern area much cooler an greener than the southern more sunnier Costas for example and well Madrid deepening on the time of year can be cool or very hot.

Some people are surprised to learn that Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain and not Barcelona which is maybe better known. The city is located on the Manzanares River in the central region of the country. Surprisingly its metropolitan area is the third-largest in the European Union (after London and Paris) and has a population of around 6.5 million residents.

The main gay area is in the Chueca district, close to Gran Via. This hugely popular district has a the highest concentration of gay bars, clubs and shops. The overall neighbourhood is relatively compact, with most of the establishments close to Plaza Chueca or Calle Pelayo.

The nightlife starts very late in Madrid. The bars don’t get busy until after midnight and people move on to a nightclub around 4 am. Many gay bars have dark rooms in the back. More hardcore venues with dress codes for cruising and fetish fans are also common.

Getting to Madrid is pretty straight forward

with many major UK and Irish cities having direct scheduled and low cost flights. From Northern Ireland you are probably better to try and use Dublin Airport to get direct flights without having to connect via London from Belfast.

Madrid offers and excellent transport system and the majority of people tend to use either bus or taxis to get around. You will notice that the city is not flat and so I would say that its a walking city but depending on your own abilities walking is 100% possible and for me it always shows a city in its true light because you will often find little hidden gems along side streets etc you would otherwise miss.

Madrid hosts many annual Gay events for its local community and international tourist and its annual Pride which is often one of Europes largest is held in July. Mad Bear is also another huge event on the scene taking place annually in December. You will also find the city hosting events like Fetish Pride, Leather, Mr Gay Spain and often many more extreme gay events compared to many other global cities. With so my recommendations Its key to plan ahead as the events can be hugely popular and often charged for. Spain is always a destination where people go large on themes so if you have the cash to splash then bring it on and buy all the outfits for the events you wish to attend. Dont worry though as you can often find gay fetish and branded clothing stores open in the city or sold at key venues during the events.

Compared to other countries I feel the gay scene is much more sexier and free so don’t be shocked by the things you may. See or experience because the vibe is nothing really shocks here I mean think Folsom and you would be on the right track.

Most gay travellers stay near the Chueca gay district, Gran Via and Sol/Cortes. These central areas offer a great base from which to explore the best sights and gay scene in Madrid. Some hotels are gay-owned and very gay-friendly.

So where would I recommend you stay and why

? The Axel Madrid has to be the number one for me because I love the brand and what the hotel represents. The Axel Madrid Set in Madrid city center, Axel Hotel Madrid - Adults Only offers accommodations only 15 minutes’ walk away from Chueca, known by its LGBT atmosphere and welcoming entertainment offer, the hotel is hetero-friendly too. Every stylish room at this hotel is air conditioned and has a TV. The rooms include a private bathroom with free toiletries, bathrobes and a hairdryer. Axel Hotel Madrid offers a restaurant where you can enjoy a modern approach to the local food. There is a roof-top terrace with its sky bar and a pool with stunning city view. A Cocktail bar can be found at this property as well. Axel Hotel Madrid is open to diversity and focused on the LGTBIQ+ community.

When it comes to night life well you have a lot to choose from but for me being a hairy Bear then Bear friendly venues are always a must visit and well Hot, Bears Bar and New Incognito where defo on my list and I feel should be on yours also.

Besides Bears the Gay scene in Madrid offers pretty much everything so other venues to check out include. Strong, LL Bar and Attack Club which as you can imagine are pretty much dance club bars which will feature many many delicious local talent and of course tourists.

Madrid is an undeniably a very sexual city and so any kind of fetish gay or not will be catered for its just knowing where to find it. Whether you’re a BDSM enthusiast, a cruising fan or simply curious, Madrid has options beyond the saunas. In particular, the gay neighbourhood of Chueca has several cruising bars opening their basements and dungeons day in and day out. Think Boy Berry, Naked, Attack and if your willing to go on the outskirts you will find some little more smaller and intimate venues mainly reserved for locals but worth checking out.

Gay sauna wise you will be spoil for choice all offering something a little more different than its competitors some large some small and some more focused on certain aspects like dark rooms

and glory holes etc. Some names to check out include Sauna Cruising, Cap Madrid Sauna Hamman Naturista and Sauna Center.

Spain has some amazing Gay brands with stores in many key destinations in the country including Barcelona and Maspalomas and Madrid I am glad to say is no different. If your looking to up your look for some themes gay party nights or Pride events then you can pick up some amazing looks at brands likes ES Collection Madrid, Addicted, Omohonia and XXX Madrid.

Something not to be missed when visiting Madrid include Royal Palace explore the grand architecture of this historic palace, one of the largest royal palaces in Europe, and learn about its fascinating history, Plaza Mayor, located in the heart of old Madrid, this historic square is a vibrant hub of activity and a great place to soak in the atmosphere or a firm favourite Gran Via This iconic street is known for its vibrant atmosphere, shopping opportunities, and impressive architecture, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

As you can see Madrid really is a true Spanish delight even without the Beach I have to say I didn’t even think about it during my visit. The way of life, the food, its people are so captivating and the evening atmosphere was electric no matter which venue I was in from small cafes during the day to the more lively dance clubs into the wee early hours.

If your looking a city who embraces MEN in all its forms then Madrid is defiantly one destination too cant miss especially being so close and offering some of the best annual events in Europe for the LGBTQ traveller.

Hopefully you will venture to Spain and enjoy whatever part you travel to and that the key for me travel can be an experience regardless of the budget so make it count and enjoy your life don’t dream it live it.

Until next time Adios.

OUT & ACTIVE THROUGH A LENS

Hi, I’m Conor Ross! I’m 35, from Armagh and am a freelance photographer trading as Conor Ross Photography. Photography has always been a passion of mine. I’ve always thought and understood the world visually and to now have the opportunity to turn my passion into a career feels incredible. I’m also a big lover of the outdoors, whether it’s hiking, paddle boarding, or exploring somewhere new, being outside brings me to life. Combining my love for photography with my love for the outdoors is where I truly shine and that naturally led to my role as photographer within Out & Active. Because I’m such a visual person, most of the events I lead tend to be outdoors, I’m committed to getting those great natural backdrops! I’ve organised hikes, an overnight adventure at Todd’s Leap and we have a bouldering session with Lurgaboy Adventures coming up this August which, coincidentally, is also my birthday month, so I’ve definitely lucked out on the outdoor front!

The journey of Out & Active has been a beautiful one: from Ryan’s initial idea to what now feels like a full Northern Ireland takeover & beyond.

The growth of this group has been incredible, and I’ve been so impressed by the friendships that have formed and the confidence I’ve seen people gain through shared experiences. As the group’s photographer, my goal is always to document these moments authentically. I’m passionate about capturing people in their element, laughing, overcoming hurdles and enjoying themselves. This role has given me endless opportunities to do just that.

As O&A’s photographer, it’s my job to document our events and capture the energy, fun and community spirit we create. All the photos you see on our (very busy) Instagram come from my camera, and I aim to produce visuals that reflect the genuine vibe of the group – those moments of joy, connection and adventure that make each event special. One standout example was our rugby event with The Belfast Azlans. You could see the determination in people’s eyes and the joy in their smiles and hopefully you’ll agree it’s all there in the photos. That’s what I love to capture: real moments, real connections, real fun.

are incredibly advanced and for something like Instagram, a pro finish isn’t always necessary. But I do think that when you compare our grid to our personal ones, there’s a noticeable difference and it gives us a slightly more polished edge. Maybe I’m the only one who notices, but I genuinely enjoy being part of the visual branding for O&A.

Another event I absolutely loved photographing was The Traitors weekend in Donegal recently. I took part as a player, so I couldn’t have my camera out during most of the gameplay, but we had two breaks where I was able to do some mini photo shoots. With a theme centred around murder, lies and betrayal, I had a chance to get really creative. Cmk Doodles provided an incredible backdrop, everyone went all out with their

Unfortunately though, this isn’t always the easiest thing to do. With our events, we’ve been lucky to draw great crowds – anywhere from 20 to 50 people turn up for our hikes, dips and other activities. One comment I hear a lot is, “Wow, you got everyone looking in the same direction in that photo,” when the truth is, I sometimes have to cheat and blend faces from multiple shots to make sure everyone’s included and looking their best! I’ve even shared a few of my editing fails in the committee group chat –it’s the kind of thing I don’t spot until it’s already been posted on instagram. Can you spot the photoshop fail in our sea dip snap?

I know iPhones in

outfits and the atmosphere was electric –the perfect mix to spark my imagination and give some creative direction. It was such a fun experience for me, and I hope everyone enjoyed the final shots.

After the game ended, we

memories and one in particular really stuck with me. One of our members said he felt genuinely loved when his teammates chanted his name during the sporting mission. He shared that, back in school, his experience with sport was the complete opposite. That moment reminded me why Out & Active matters, we’re helping to change the narrative for LGBT+ people in sport. What used to feel like a space of fear or exclusion is now becoming a space of fun, support & empowerment

Before Out & Active, most of my friendships were with straight women. I had a few gay & lesbian friends, but most of my connections with other gay men tended to be romantic. Out & Active completely changed that narrative. I now have a vibrant circle of LGBT+ friendships and I absolutely love it. I get to explore, I get to be creative behind the camera and most importantly, I get to make real memories with new friends. To anyone who hasn’t signed up for an event yet: I want you to feel the energy we feel when you scroll through our Instagram. We show up, try new things, have the craic and yes, we look cute doing it! Everyone is welcome, no matter if you’re straight, gay, trans or anywhere in between. Just be your wonderful self & know that you’ve got a place at Out & Active.

And just to add – while I love capturing our moments together, no one is ever required to be photographed. Everyone has the right to opt out of appearing

on social media or in group shots. Just let me, a committee member, or our Instagram account know privately; your comfort always comes first.
