hen I wrote the original editorial for this week, it was before Sukkos (got to work early in the publishing world!) and the general gist was Shabbos, Yom Tov and how much nachas ruach our hard work all month (cooking, cleaning, and going out to tefillos) has surely given Hashem. But then Simchas Torah came along, and with it the surprise attack on Eretz Yisroel. There was simply no way to let this earthshattering, horrific, event pass under our radar. As someone who lives in Eretz Yisroel—the attack and resultant war is part and parcel of my very being. It warms my heart, and the hearts of my fellow Jews, to know that all over the world Yidden are davening and taking on extra kabalos for the safety and security of Eretz Yisroel. Indeed, the soldiers need our tefillos, the people in the border communities need our tefillos, and people all over Eretz Yisroel need our tefillos—just yesterday six people were injured in a missile attack in my city which is nowhere near the border. That every mitzvah that we do, every Shabbos that we observe, and every Yom Tov that we beautify and enhance is supremely dear to Hashem is clear. Two Shomrei Shabbos settlements in Eretz Yisroel, close to Gaza, were completely skipped over in the horrific Simchas Torah attack. Let us take the beauty of the month of Tishrei— and all our L’sheim

Shamayim efforts—and apply them to the rest of our year. It’s parashas Bereishis this week— the very first parashah in the Torah. The first Rashi in the Torah talks about how the whole world belongs to Hashem and how He gave Eretz Yisroel to us Jews because this was His Divine will. This land is ours, our direct inheritance from Heaven. Hashem gave us this land to observe His Torah and mitzvos, and every mitzvah done—anywhere in the world—only contributes to the safety of the Jews living here. Atrocities are taking place all over Eretz Yisroel, and our minds are boggled by the horror of it all. At the same time, we know and trust that Hashem has a plan for us all and that His plan is the ultimate good. We will yet see the benefit of our hard work and efforts. “The eyes of Hashem are always upon it [Eretz Yisroel], from the beginning of the year to the end of the year,” (Devarim 11, 12). No other land has the same level of Divine providence as Eretz Yisroel. Let us keep on doing ours, while trusting in Hashem to protect and safeguard our Jewish brethren.

Marriage 101 Inasmuch as the first mitzvah we are given in the Torah is to be fruitful, multiply and populate the earth, it is fitting that - with marriage a prerequisite for fulfilling this mitzvah, there are several points about marriage that this parashah highlights.
Finding your Soulmate People were created for marriage, and until they find their true partner, they feel that something fundamental is missing in their lives. That is because man and woman were once one being. You may have heard it said, that the world was created for couples. Well, it’s true. There is a duality, a pairing, of almost everything in the universe, with each side — left/right, feminine/masculine — having its own energy and power. The search for a soulmate is a natural physical and spiritual quest. And it continues for as long as it has to. Adam and Chava were the first couple to be buried in Me’aras HaMachpeilah, which is literally translated as the Cave of Couples. The world was made for couples because that’s the best state in which we can bring the world to fruition and to perfection, even if marriage itself isn’t always perfect.

Of course, one can experience a spiritually meaningful and happy life if not married, or if only married briefly. But marriage holds within it a world of possibilities that is unique to the marital bond, which Hashem uses metaphorically as His relationship with Am Yisrael.
Sometimes It Takes a While to Find the Person Destined for You Hashem created a world where every animal had a mate. Adam, the last creation to be created before Shabbos, searched for a partner among the other creatures, and was unable to find one. There was no chemistry. There certainly was no biology. And so Hashem took the female attributes that were in Adam, along with a part of his body, and created a tailor-made partner for him. Hashem took one of Adam’s ribs to create his intended, because man and woman, husband and wife, are meant to live side by side, in tandem and in harmony, creating their own personal paradise.
You Are One Adam and Chava were originally one being. And after marriage, a man and a woman are supposed to consider themselves one body, one soul, and one heart. Rav Aryeh Levin’s famous phrase, “My wife’s foot hurts us,” is the model of marital empathy. There should

be much more “we” than “you” and “I.” It is not by chance that couples who have been together for a long time start to resemble one another. This is because the external is reflecting the internal, which over time becomes eternal. Although he lived and was married for 970 years, a very long time, Adam knew that Chava was the only one for him. He never secondguessed that.
Privacy There are a couple of Midrashim that say that Chava was not Hashem’s first attempt at giving Adam a wife. The first time Hashem formed Chava from Adam’s side, he was awake during the operation, and it repulsed him. So Hashem put him to sleep the second time around. While marriage is a very close relationship, not everything has to be shared, and closing our eyes once in a while isn’t a bad thing.
By giving in to the snake’s temptations Chava literally brought death into the world, yet Adam called her the mother of all living things. Not only did he no longer blame her, he gave her a name that signified the opposite of what she had done; he focused on her life-giving ability instead of on her mistake. He forgave her. And that forgiveness enabled her to fulfill her destiny as the mother of all living things. And she was able to then fulfill that role. Hashem said he would make man ezer k’negdo, literally, a helpmate opposite him. When a man is kind to his wife, serves Hashem, and does the right thing, his wife serves as a helpmate. But when he diverges from his true path, treats her unkindly, or defies Hashem, she is opposite him (and that’s how she helps him). A wife is like a spiritual barometer in a marriage.
Marriage Is a Sacred Bond

Chava’s first and biggest mistake with the snake was allowing him to engage her in conversation in the first place.
Adam and Chava lived together for almost a millennium. But they dealt with difficult challenges: Their son went off the derech and became a murderer and outcast, their other son was killed (the worst kind of suffering for a parent). They again brought new life into the world but watched as it became more and more depraved, probably wondering what kind of future their offspring would have.
There are many threats to marriage from the outside. We can shut off technology and live in a sheltered community, but there are always going to be threats: people who may cause conflict, temptation, plant doubt, speak lashon hara, or pry where they have no business to do so. No one should be able to breach the protective wall that surrounds a husband and wife. If there is any area of life that needs vigilant guarding, this is it. Miscommunication and the temptation that the snake introduced led to betrayal. Adam and Chava’s conversation with Hashem in the aftermath of the sin sounds like a session in a therapist’s office, “It’s her fault; she made me do it.” In the backlash, the couple had to deal with punishment, relocation, and problems in livelihood, but Adam ultimately showed his appreciation for his wife and named her

Chava, “the Mother of all Living things,” even though her actions had introduced death into the world. He learned to speak her language.

Young people can’t conceive of the many challenges that life can bring. And that’s a good thing. But life does bring challenges, and challenges test our mettle as a couple. It’s only through renewing the bond, commitment to one another, and helping each other through the difficulties that couples can endure.

The Maggid of Kozhnitz (1) (1737 - 1814)

childless couple once traveled to the Maggid of Kozhnitz for a berachah for children. The Maggid gave them a berachah, and sometime later they were indeed blessed with a wonderful baby boy. This baby was the joy of his parents’ lives, until he fell ill one day, and soon enough it looked like he might die. Desperate, the wife asked her husband to travel to the Maggid of Kozhnitz for another berachah. The husband made the journey and indeed received a second berachah from the Maggid — yet it didn’t seem to help. Instead of the baby getting better, it seemed, if anything, as though he were growing weaker. Days passed, with the mother sitting beside her baby’s crib, davening. And then one day, she succumbed to exhaustion and fell into a deep sleep. She was jolted awake, however, when she noticed a soldier standing near her baby’s cradle. The soldier was dressed in uniform, and not only was he leaning over the cradle, he was doling out liquid to her baby! “Aaah! Go away this instant!” the mother shouted in fright. With lightning speed, the soldier disappeared. But strangely, after the incident, the baby slowly got better. Pleased and alarmed, the husband and wife wondered if perhaps the soldier who’d fed their son liquid was in fact a wizard. “I think it’s time to return to the

Maggid for some advice,” the wife told her husband, and so the couple traveled to Kozhnitz. The Maggid listened to the couple’s tale and reassured them that all was well. But after they left, the Maggid asked his assistant to travel to a cemetery on the outskirts of Kozhnitz and to knock at the grave of a certain soldier there. “Tell him that I would like to see him,” the Maggid said.
The Maggid’s assistant did as he was told, and the soldier in question appeared before the Maggid. “Who appointed you pediatrician?” the Maggid asked. “It’s a long story,” the soldier responded. “And it begins when I was a young boy. I was conscripted into the Czar’s army, where I unfortunately assimilated with the non-Jews. “One day, while my soldier friends and I were out in the forest, we saw a Jew walking through. The soldiers quickly surrounded him and stole seventy-five rubles from him. Then, fearing that the Jew might tell our commander what had happened, my friends decided to kill him. They tied a noose around his head and hung him
from a tree so that he could die a slow death. “Seeing this gruesome behavior, my Jewish neshamah was aroused. I told my friends they could leave the area without me, and I then approached the Jew and cut the noose from his neck. Slowly, the color returned to his cheeks, and his breathing returned to normal. I then handed him seventyfive rubles of my own so that he could travel home in peace. “Back at the army base, role call was held, and when I didn’t respond to my name, my commander asked my friends where I was. When they told him that I’d been with them earlier and had gotten held up, the commander instructed them to go back and look for me. And so it was that the soldiers found me near the tree that they’d hung the Jew earlier — with the Jew no longer there. “My friends were incensed when they realized what I had done. So that I wouldn’t tell the general what had happened, they killed me and buried me in a grave on the outskirts of the city. “I ascended on High, and the Heavenly Beis Din was unable to decide what to do with me. I’d done too many aveiros to go into Gan Eden, but I couldn’t be sent to Gehinnom either, because I’d saved a Jew and had even been killed in the process! “And so it was decided that I would be granted the power to act as a pediatrician and to heal any children in need.” (Adapted from Sippurei Chassidim by S. eb Yitzchak, a wealthy Jew from the town of Volozhin, often traveled far from home for business, customarily returning home with a costly gift for his wife each time.
Gunzberg arrived in town. Upon hearing that a set of Shas was available at Reb Yitzchak’s home, he went over to inquire about borrowing it.
Once, before he left on yet another business venture, Reb Yitzchak’s wife asked him if, instead of the usual gift, he could instead purchase a complete set of Shas. At that time, a set of Shas was a valuable gift indeed. Printing was expensive and difficult, and almost no one owned a complete set of the Talmud. Still, Reb Yitzchak agreed to his wife’s request, and upon his return from his business venture, he proudly showed her the set of Shas he had purchased. The Shas was indeed exquisite and rare in the town of Volozhin, and Reb Yitzchak and his wife immediately decided that they would loan it out to anyone who wanted. Reb Yitzchak, who was too busy with business to stay on top of a lending library, was happy when his wife took over the actual logistics of the lending and returns. One

Reb Aryeh Leib was a Torah giant whose reputation preceded him. Upon seeing him on her doorstep and realizing that he would probably borrow quite a few of the volumes, if not all of them, Reb Yitzchak’s wife quickly came up with a way to make things easier for the Gaon. “Instead of the Gaon having to travel back and forth every time he finishes one volume and wants a new one,” she said, “I will ask a servant to take care of all the exchanges so that the
Gaon’s time and energy are not unnecessarily wasted.” The Gaon agreed to this suggestion, and a servant was indeed put at his disposal to arrange for the exchanges. Reb Aryeh Leib remained in Volozhin for a lengthy period of time, and so the servant’s service continued for quite a while, with Reb Yitzchak’s wife overseeing the process. Before Reb Aryeh Leib left Volozhin, he paid Reb Yitzchak and his wife a special visit. “Because of your special dedication to my learning,” he said, “I bless you with two sons, who will light up the eyes of the Jews with their Torah. One son will teach Shas to others, and the other son will be so wellversed in Torah, he won’t need a Shas at all.” Reb Yitzchak and his wife were indeed blessed with two sons after that. One was Reb Chaim of Volozhin, founder of Yeshivas Volozhin — where thousands of bachurim learned Torah — and the other was Reb Zalman, who knew the entire Torah by heart and was one of the Vilna Gaon’s greatest disciples.

And then, coming upon us like an unexpected storm, was bein hazemanim, otherwise known as the summer holidays to us Brits. Even Avi was planning to come home from Israel this time — often, if the holidays were too short, he just stayed where he was and met up with some friends for trips or camping. But three weeks made it worth it. We were very excited; we hadn’t seen our son since Pesach three months previously. Rikki, who was in Gateshead, a mere hop skip and jump up the M1 — compared to the three thousand miles between us and Israel — sometimes came home for Shabbos if she was allowed to. So we had seen her. And Debbie and I had found an excuse to drive the three

hundred or so miles to see her. I always had business to do up north, and clients to see in the area. But nonetheless, it was a moment of celebration to know both our kids would soon be home. “I wonder how they’ll take to our new neighbor,” Debbie commented casually as we sat sipping our morning coffees the day the kids were due back. “They loved the Bernsteins, didn’t they?” “Yeah,” I agreed, “like the great-grandparents they no longer have. I think they’ll miss Mottel and Gittel.” As I said before, both of us still have relatively healthy parents who are active and independent,

and they all make good grandparents. But somehow, they’re a little too independent. Like my mother drives a convertible — with the top down as much as possible in our unpredictable British weather. She ties a headscarf around her wig, wears oversized sunglasses, and you can’t tell her from a thirty-year-old. I think that’s the idea. I don’t think she can tell herself from a thirty-year-old. Honestly? I call it her midlife crisis car, and she laughs and says, “Midlife? I’ll tell you when I get there.” I think Dad is a bit bemused by her; he’s more into sitting and learning, wearing slippers, while Mum zips around in her midlife crisis looking like Jackie O. in her headscarf and giant shades. But the kind of cozy, sitin-a-rocking-chair-andknit type of grandparents — well, grandmother, anyway. I can’t picture Mendel sitting in a chair and knitting, but you know what I mean — anyway, that kind of grandparent my kids never had. So they loved Mendel and Gittel. But maybe I’m living in a parallel universe, and those kinds of grandparents don’t exist anymore, and all grandparents these days are in their midlife crises driving convertibles around. We hadn’t seen much of Xavier Roberts for a couple of days or more, and were kind of enjoying his absence, if you get my meaning. Everything on Flower Street had more or less gone back to normal after the drama at the Street Party, and if neighbors did talk about the newcomer at all, they just mentioned him in passing. Like, for example, “The Bernsteins’ house looks in severe need of some TLC. Do

you think the new guy will do it?” Flower Street was a proud little street in Golders Green. Everyone took care of his own house and maintained it well. Not personally, you understand. We Jews (as a huge generalization) aren’t really into DIY home maintenance. Not for us, the banging and the klopping with hammers and nails, or the whizzing with electric screwdrivers. Our kind of DIY involves a credit card tool, or something that makes a jingle rather than a klop or whirr — to pay someone else to do it. So almost everyone hired workmen to do home improvements. Except the Bernsteins. Maybe they just couldn’t afford it. Maybe (and this is what I suspected was the real reason), at their age, they just didn’t have the stomach for it. Home improvements are not for the fainthearted. We did our kitchen a while back, and I recall Debbie, at the height of the disruption to her life, clutching at her sheitel and saying, “If I ever think about redoing the kitchen again, Nachman, remind me of this moment!” So it was a matter of general interest on the street if the “new guy,” as they tended to call him, would undertake the very-much-needed home improvements. Rewiring and plumbing, for starters. Then put in a decent central heating system. The only thing that looked decent in that house wasn’t even in the house. It was the garden, front and back. That had been cultivated into submission by Gittel, whose horticultural skills were a source of great enjoyment to

her. I sometimes thought it replaced all the other caring, nurturing things in her life, like giving birth to children and rearing them with so much love. Her flowers were like her new babies. I often thought about that when thinking of Schindler Square. I wondered if the residents got a little patch of garden to call their own, and if they could faff about there and plant things and stuff. Somehow, I thought not. And I wondered how she would cope without gardening to fulfill her. And from that came the subsequent thought: If there was no chance of gardening in Schindler Square, why would she choose to go there? I mean, I knew she was getting to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic these days, and it might even be a diagnosable condition, like dementia or Alzheimer’s. Mottel probably couldn’t afford a live-in aide — not without selling the house. So I guess it made sense that they went there. What didn’t make sense was why Xavier Roberts moved in. I was thinking maybe he had a whole family back in Russia or Kazakhstan or wherever he came from, and was planning to bring them over. Maybe he was going to do a whole lot of work on the house and then bring his family in. Yes, that would make sense. I guess we’d just have to wait and see what he did to the place. Meanwhile, Avi and Rikki were coming home! Maybe they’d have some insight into what the guy next door was planning to do with the house, because it sure was a mystery to me. *** Twenty-two-year-old Avi arrived home first. He’d flown from Israel on an early flight, then, along with a couple of friends, had

picked up a rental car at the airport that they planned to share for the duration of the break. It worked out reasonably that way, as long as they could amicably decide who needed the car most on any given occasion. Going on shidduch dates trumped everyone else’s needs. Going shopping was at the bottom of the list. Probably, if they’d been girls, the priority list would have been reversed. Avi and his friends were all of the age that they were hoping some shidduch suggestions would come up during bein hazemanim, and at least one of them could go back to yeshivah triumphantly engaged. Whenever I saw my tall, handsome son after an absence of some weeks or months, it was always with an intake of breath that Debbie and I and, of course, Hashem had between us created this perfect being. Perfect in my eyes, anyway. And his mother’s, no doubt. Having only two children in a society where large families were the norm made each one of them even more precious than they already were. “Hey!” Avi called out, swinging into the house with his oversized suitcases in tow and several backpacks weighing him down from behind. Despite all of this, he stood tall and proud. Dumping the bags on the floor in the hallway, he came straight to his mother for a hug first, having to bend almost in half to achieve this. Then he turned to me. None of this manly handshaking business; we went straight for the bear hug of father and son, the way it should be. Avi was taller than I was too, but it was took a slight bend, not a hairpin like with his mother, to hug me. “Hey, you!” I said, bursting with pride. “How are you doing? How was zeman? Did you enjoy all the learning?” “Loving it more and more Dad,” Avi

said enthusiastically, making me instantly ashamed of myself for my lack of learning time. I did have a regular chavrusa, but we were learning together spasmodically these days, both of us having so many other pressures. As if reading my mind, Avi said, “Why don’t you and I learn together during the holidays? You can point out where I’m going wrong.” That was him becoming a diplomat; it would more likely be him pointing out where I was going wrong. He was the blossoming Talmudic scholar now; I was the old hasbeen who could do with some brushing up. “I’d love that,” I said, and meant it. I couldn’t imagine anything nicer than sitting down with my son and studying a tractate of the Mishnah or Talmud and hearing what his rabbeim had brought to the table. And hearing what his latest sideline enterprise project was. Avi was more than just a good learner and admirable yeshivah student. As a lawyer myself, I had high hopes for his future in the business world. I wanted a son who always learned, all his life, but I also wanted a son who could support himself and a growing family. And Avi had demonstrated entrepreneurial skills at a very young age. Not always legitimately, it must be said, but in hindsight, I found his business skills amusing rather than shocking, despite their impropriety. When he was aged twelve or maybe just bar mitzvah, I discovered that the packets of nosh

Debbie generously added to his packed lunch weren’t being consumed — at least, not by him — but being sold on the open market, or the school lunchroom, whichever term you preferred. For some reason best known to the naive boys who bought from him rather than the school canteen, they were willing to pay over the top for the product. Probably the school canteen was lacking in variety, freshness, or novelty — or all three. But he managed to make a nice little “earner” out of what should have been a tasty addition to his own lunch. What he did with the money, I had never discovered, but he always seemed to have plenty of cash and retained an enviably slender figure, so I couldn’t help but be proud of him. I never told Debbie about “our little secret” because I didn’t want her to stop adding nosh to his lunch box. He later developed a nice sideline business of writing other students’ lines for them for a reasonably hefty fee. You know the kind of lines I mean, the ones along the lines of “I must not throw papers around the classroom during Gemara lesson,” and the culprit had to do it one hundred times, presumably so it would sink in. Avi, my wonderful future businessman, the one who would probably support Debbie and me in our old age, had developed a method of tying four pens together with a rubber band so he could write four lines at a time. Thus one hundred lines became twenty-five.

He never revealed this secret method, which anyone could have copied if they’d had the smarts, and again, the cash was rolling in. My proud Dad moment was in full flower as I looked at him and wondered what new way he had discovered to diddle his peers out of their hard-earned cash. “Mum, I’m starving, what’s to eat?” were his next words, again predictably. But then he seemed to go still for a moment, the enthusiasm draining out of him. “I heard the Bernsteins moved to Schindler Square,” he said. “Such a shame. Who’s living next door? I heard he isn’t Jewish.” Boy, oh boy, news travels fast in the yeshivah world, even reaching as far as Israel. Then I looked at Debbie, and she had her face averted, busily preparing the prize son some gargantuan feast to welcome him home. And I knew where his information had come from. I didn’t question Debbie then and there, of course. This was a conversation for later. And anyway, what was wrong with her filling in her only son on what was, after all, an important change in his life: the absence of his surrogate grandparents and the sudden replacement of them with someone strange and different? “Everyone has to be Jewish?” I said, hating how my voice sounded defensive, apologetic even. Thinking of those crossroads and Mr. Nakamura, he seemed different somehow; less threatening. Mr. Nakamura just got on with living on our street; he didn’t interact with anyone or expect anyone to interact with him. Xavier Roberts had barely been here five minutes and already seemed to be planning something devious. In which case, why was I defending the man with the hidden reptilian being under his human skin?

“I think I’m going to go and say hello to him anyway,” Avi, my friendly, open son said. “Get a feel of the man. Maybe I can find out a little more about what he’s actually doing here. Has he told you that, Dad?” “No, and I don’t think it’s our business to find out,” I said, trying to sound fatherly and dispensing of wisdom from a great height, whereas in fact, I found myself trembling with a mixture of eagerness and terror for what Avi might find out. On the one hand, if Xavier didn’t know my son was home, wasn’t that a good thing? On the other hand, though, maybe Xavier knew Avi was coming home and was awaiting his arrival, for whatever nefarious purpose he had in mind? Maybe I should keep them apart? On the other hand, though — and then, in the words of Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof: “There is no other hand!” Avi was looking at me in disbelief. “Dad! He’s a neighbor! We want everyone to like the Jews, and yet we shy away from someone not Jewish for no other reason than that — that he’s not Jewish! I’m going round. Right now.” He looked at his mother, face still averted, but if a human’s ears could prick up, hers would be pricked right up. “I’ll be back soon for that food, Mum,” he said. And he was gone, leaving me with an inexplicable sense of foreboding. What was there to worry about? I reasoned with myself. He was only going to say hi to the neighbor. Perfectly normal, neighborly thing to do. So why didn’t it feel that way?

The thing is, unlike the kids of the authors of said books, my kids have some invisible antennae that seem to alert them to my every move (despite the white-noise machines and the two-inchthick rugs). I found the 1.5-inch and even the 2-inch, but I know you keep gently reminding my daughter about the 1 ¾ inch, and, well, she likes to stick to the rules. But back to me. I know I’m a little late with this looseleaf, but I’ve really been trying — and isn’t effort worth something? I’ll have you know that in the fourth store I visited, I finally found that orange reinforced two-subject notebook with the built-in folders that you sent a note home about before yom tov. I practically skipped back to store number two to return the black one that I bought when I had lost all hope of finding the orange. But all in all, I was a pretty good sport if I may say so myself! Rachel and Lillian were onto their third game of Rummy, and Becky was in the kitchen “helping” Mom cook. Daddy was away at work, as usual, so it seemed pathetic for Jake to grouch around when there was no one to actually grouch to. He had just about decided that having a friend over for the day might not be such a bad idea after all, when there was a short knock on the Greens’ door. Rap. Rap. Rap. An interesting, musical rap, Jake thought, getting up to answer the door. Peering through the peephole he saw a wiry figure with red hair and freckles on the other side of the door. Clearly it was the new neighbor, Rachel’s brother. Quickly, before his moodiness could kick in again, Jake unlatched the door.
Recap: Curious about the new neighbors, Lillian Green goes over to introduce herself. She invites Rachel Katz over to play, and soon Jake and Lillian both learn about Katz family’s lastminute move from Holland. 52

“Hi,” the new boy introduced himself. “My name’s Eli Katz. My sister’s inside playing with your sister.” Jake nodded, waiting for the boy to explain what had brought him to his house. “I thought maybe we could play or do something together too. Parents’ permission already received, of course.”

“Play what?” Jake asked. He stood firmly in the doorway of his house, blocking the other boy’s view of his apartment. “Anything. We can take a tour. Play basketball or baseball in a court somewhere, or a boring old board game.” “I don’t like sports. Or board games.” “I don’t like board games either. But sports are a different story.” Eli said. “If you don’t like them, then what do you like?” Jake shrugged. He didn’t feel like telling Eli that his real passion was cars and that he had quite a collection of them. Eli shifted from leg to leg. “I guess it doesn’t really matter. If you invite me in, we should be able to figure out something that you like.” A bright smile accompanied Eli’s words, and Jake felt his heart thawing. Back in Boston, he’d always been Mr. Weak Legs. It was so nice for someone to view him as something, or someone, else. “Come in,” Jake agreed, pulling the door open so that Eli could follow him in past the kitchen area and toward the open-plan living room, where Rachel and Lillian were still giggling. Mrs. Green peeked at Eli curiously. “You’re the new neighbor?” she asked. Eli nodded. “Yeah. I’m Rachel’s brother.” “Nice to meet you,” Mrs. Green said. “Rachel looks like a great girl, and I’m glad your mother let you both come over. What grade will you be in?” “Seventh. I’m going to the Jewish Hebrew school.” Mrs. Green nodded as though she knew this fact already, and Jake stared at the small beanie on his new neighbor’s head. The boy was obviously religious if the beanie was indicative of anything, and he suspected that the other boys in his new school would be religious too. Or more religious than his own family, at least.

Maybe he’d want to become like that… “Looks like we’ll both be in the same class then,” Jake said slowly, wondering what other surprises the upcoming year might still spring on him. “That’s terrific!” Eli said. His r’s had a slightly rolling undertone to them, which Jake found simultaneously amusing and intriguing. “I guess your sister will be in my sister’s class too, then, in the girls wing of the school — right?” Rachel and Lillian both looked up. “Uh, no.” Rachel said. “I’m a grade older than Lillian. She’s going into fourth grade, and I’m going into fifth.” “Close enough,” Eli said. He turned his attention back to Jake as the boys moved past the kitchen area. “Uh, so are you going to show me your room already? And tell me your name?” Jake lead Eli into the hallway, sighing as he said, “My name’s Jake. Jake Green.” He wondered what Eli would say when he saw the interior of his room. What had that boy told him, eons ago, back in Boston, on Jake’s one attempt to have a friend over? “Cool room, but you’re still a brainy brain with weak legs.” The words felt like knives through his soul even now as he stood in a completely different country, about to bring a friend into his new room — modeled after the original Bostonian creation. “Here we are.” Jake twisted the door handle to his room. Eli stood in the entranceway and stared, clearly taken aback. “Wow!” he said after a lengthy moment had elapsed. “I never saw so many cars in one room, or on one wall, in my life.” Jake smiled vaguely, hoping that Eli would just end his description there. “I even recognize some of the cars up there,” Eli said, coming over to stare at the posters that Jake had painstakingly stuck up to his wall. “That’s a Bentley Continental GT, isn’t it?” Jake nodded.

“And an Audi S5 Cabriolet.” Eli continued to walk around and whistle in amazement. “I probably recognize a couple more, but that’s about the extent of my car knowledge.” Jake tensed, waiting for the barb to come. “Maybe we can make an exchange,” Eli said after a few moments, dropping down onto Jake’s bed with an easy air. “I’ll teach you how to play sports, and you’ll teach me all about car makes and models.” “I don’t want to learn about sports.” “Oh.” Eli lifted an eyebrow. A moment of silence passed. Jake stood restlessly at the wall, and Eli got up from the bed to walk over to the window and peer outside it. “Cool view you have out there,” Eli said, whistling. “You see all the buildings across the street.” “What’s cool about that?” Jake said. “Don’t you see the same thing?” Eli shook his head. “The rooms in my house face your apartment, not the street.” “Your living room faces my house,” Jake agreed. “But that can’t be the whole apartment.” He thought of the men who’d walked around the formerly empty apartment that the Katzes now resided in. He’d seen them that day he’d helped Becky wash her hands in the bathroom, and he wondered now if the Katzes knew them. Eli shrugged. “If you say so. We just moved, so I haven’t had time to figure everything out yet, but this view is definitely stunning.” “Lots of European cities have colorful buildings,” Jake said. The buildings across the street were assorted shades of pinks, whites, browns, and greens. “Wasn’t it like this in Holland too?” “So Rachel told you where we’re originally from,” Eli said. It was a statement, not a question. “Yeah, there were colorful buildings there too. But our house overlooked a park

Across the street, a window shade fluttered in one of the buildings. Jake’s shoulders tensed. “Nice view and cool room,” Eli said, turning away. “But I want to go and find a park to play ball in. Want to come?” Jake shook his head. He continued to peer at the fluttering window shade in the window of the apartment across the street. The apartment was at a slight angle from the Green’s apartment. A strip of gray appeared beneath the shade. “A gray sleeve,” Jake intoned quietly. “The man in gray is there.” The gray could have almost been mistaken for the colorless background of the clearly unlit apartment, but Jake was too perceptive to let it slip his notice. “I’m going to go,” Eli said, heading over to the doorway. “You’re sure you don’t want to come?” Jake turned around from the window, momentarily torn. Eli was nice, he decided, but he didn’t want to risk things. Years of taunting back at home made him too fearful of trying something new, of getting closer to a boy who wanted to be his friend. Jake shook his head slowly, and then turned back to the window and to the gray sleeve across the street. In a way, Jake thought as he continued to keep tabs on the nearly imperceptible person across the road, he was no more skilled at building and maintaining friendships than the gray figure was at concealing his presence. Leafcutter ant

“Lech el nimlah etzel,” Shlomo Hamelech advises-and that is precisely what we will do this week. The leafcutter ant, as its name implies, is an ant which cuts leaves. The leafcutter ant species consists of close to 50 families. Leafcutter ants cut leaves, flowers, and grass and transport it to the fungus garden in their nests, which feeds them and their families. In just several years, a nest can grow to the width of 100 feet, over an area of close to 7,000 square feet and house eight million ants!

Using her wings, the queen ant flies out of her mother’s nest to look for a new home. After settling on the perfect spot, she loses her wings and starts digging. In contrast to the millions (!) of children she gives birth to, which live for just a few months, the queen’s lifespan is quite long: 7-8 years. The leafcutter ant’s nest contains several types of ants: the queen (who has no responsibilities other than laying millions of eggs), and 4 types of soldiers (of which the smallest has a head circumference of less than a millimeter, and the largest over 7 millimeter!). Each type of soldier carries one (or some) of the following responsibilities: caring for the fungus garden (a type of mold), clearing debris, tending to the children, and defending the nest. Renowned for cutting leaves, the leafcutter ant has a sharp mouth with which it cuts leaves in a circular shape (see upper left photo). Its jawbones shake 1,000 times per second as it tears leaves! Gripping the leaf with its mouth, the leafcutter ant transports it home-yet doesn’t consume it. The leaf is shredded and then placed in the underground fungus garden where it cultivates into fungus. Leafcutter ants destroy fields and can completely demolish an entire citrus tree within 24 hours!

Several years ago, one of the largest ant nests in the world was found in Brazil. A group of scientists noticed the opening of a leafcutter ant nest (photo 1) and wanted to explore the area beneath. How did they do this without destroying the ?nest They poured cement into the opening for three consecutive days, filling it with 10 tons of cement (photo 2). After a month, when the cement had hardened, they dug beneath it (3) to reveal a vast network of subterranean highways, roads, and ;paths (the thin tubes) which led to their living chambers (4-5 the round lumps). The nest covered an area of 500 square feet and was 3 stories high (6-8). When building the nest, the ants had removed 40 tons of !sand-of which each crumb was 4 times their own body weight They carried this a distance of what would be just over half a mile in human terms! Abba, the father of Shmuel, was a great tzaddik. His son Shmuel is one of the Sages mentioned in the Gemara. Shmuel’s father was known as an upright, honest man and many people deposited their money with him for safekeeping.
Where can I hide this money? I have an idea…
Abba, there is a bundle of money here that belongs to orphans. Can I give it to you for safekeeping? Of course. I will watch over it carefully.
Some time later, Abba became ill and passed away. His son Shmuel was not with him when he died, and he knew nothing about the bundle of money.

Rabbi Tarfon’s Kriyas Shema Reciting Shema on the road posed a dilemma…
Why does the pasuk say “u’v’shachbecha u’v’kumecha — when you lie down and when you arise”? Because at night you must lie down to recite Kriyas Shema, and in the morning you must stand up to recite Kriyas Shema! No, no! A person can say Shema in his normal manner, whether he is lying down or standing up.
Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel disagreed on many halachos. One of these was about Kriyas Shema…
Then why does it say “when you lie down and when you arise”? It is referring to the time when you lie down and the time when you get up.
Night is the time when people lie down and morning is the time when people get up. At these times one is required to recite Kriyas Shema!

he yamim tovim have passed, and life is getting back into a routine. Things may feel overwhelming as school and work starts up again full force, which is why I came up with these projects that are easy and manageable even with all the homework and other work that’s sure to pile up. As for the crafts themselves… with days that are getting colder and evening coming earlier, who doesn’t want to cuddle up and get cozy these days? With these projects you’ll be able to add some light to the long
nights ahead. Use them as candles to achieve that goal (as per the last step of the instructions), or turn them into fall gifts by putting whatever you want inside and adding a brown name tag to the cover. You can also use these jars to showcase coffee, tea, and sugar on your counter. I’m a major fan of these jars because really anything works! From centerpieces, nightstand décor, toothbrush jars, and pantry storage, these jars can be used for just about anything. So let’s begin!
Vibes of Craft
Supplies: •
A mason jar (an empty pickle jar works great!)
•
A sponge or brush
•
Craft leaves (not the ones with a waxy finish)
•
Quotes cut into pretty shapes
•
Modge podge or any glue that holds well and dries transparent.
•
Additional decorations (decorative ribbons, twine, washi tape, cinnamon sticks, brown paper tags, beads, dried fruit… I even used old costume jewelry I no longer wear.)
Step 1:
Prepare the Jar: Thoroughly wash your jar with dish soap and water to remove all dirt and grease. Then wipe the outside of the jar with rubbing alcohol. There’s a good chance your leaves won’t stick if you leave out this all-important step — so don’t try it! Once you’re finished, be careful not to touch the sides of the glass where the leaves will go so as not to get any oils from your fingers right back onto the jar.

Vibes of Craft Step 2:
Prepare the Leaves & Decorations: Get the craft leaves or flowers to lie as flat as possible. Do this by peeling the plastic ribbing off the fake leaves. It’s a lot easier to do this than I thought it would be. I just slipped my fingernail underneath the ribbing at the end of each leaf, and it peeled right back. (Note: It’s important to make sure that your craft leaves don’t have a waxy finish. That type won’t work for this project.) If you chose to use real leaves and flowers for this project, make sure to iron them flat in this step.
Step 3:
Add the First Leaf:

Once your decorations are ready, use a small sponge brush to put a thin layer of Mod Podge on the outside of the jar where you want to place the leaf. The area you cover should be slightly larger than the size of your leaf, no more. Alternatively, you can apply the Mod Podge directly to the underside of the leaf you wish to place.

Wait a few minutes for the Mod Podge to begin to dry, and then, when the Mod Podge is slightly sticky, press the leaf onto the correct spot (or the leaf with the glue directly onto the jar). If you try adding the leaf to the glue right away, it won’t stick. The Mod Podge needs to be somewhat tacky for the leaf to adhere to the glass.

Once the first leaf is laying nicely (completely stuck to the glass and unable to shift), add a thin layer of Mod Podge for the next leaf, and start the process again.

Step 4:
Cover the Rest of the Jar: •
Keep adding leaves to the glass, following the previous step. Allow your leaves to overlap as much or as little as you wish.

Use the sponge brush (with whatever Mod Podge has been absorbed into it) to press down any leaf edges that aren’t adhering well to the glass. Don’t add any extra Mod Podge. There should be plenty left over and soaked into the brush.
•
After all the leaves have been applied, wait for them to dry (this could take 15 to 20 minutes of waiting time, depending on how much Mod Podge was used).
Step 5:
Add More Decorations: Those leaves are just the basis for this craft. Don’t be afraid to add layers of other decorations as well. From decorative ribbons to brown paper tags, beads, or even dried flowers, this step is where you can make these jars your own. Apply these decorations the same way you applied the leaves. Add a thin layer of Mod Podge to the jar, and wait for it to get tacky, then stick the decoration of your choice on top and wait for it to try.

Step 6:
Coating and Drying Time: Once you’re sure that your decorations have dried completely (see step 4), squeeze a generous amount of Mod Podge over the jar and apply it carefully with a sponge brush. Make sure the entire jar is coated, and then wait for the jar to dry completely. My jar was dry to the touch after an hour, but some small areas still looked white, so I left it overnight to finish drying.
Step 7:
Turn your Jar into a Candle Holder: If you have young kids around, I suggest purchasing a battery-operated candle and sticking it inside. If you want to use a real candle, make sure there’s no Mod Podge, or any other decorations, inside the glass jar before inserting the candle. Mod Podge will melt if it gets too hot, and real leaves are flammable, so make sure to keep all the fun stuff on the outside of the jar. Light your candle (or turn on your battery-operated one), and enjoy the autumn warmth!

Smash Burgers Reinvent Taco Tuesday with a fantastic smash burger! This dish merges the rich flavors of a classic burger with the ease of a taco and promises an exciting flavorful spin to your dinner lineup.
Yield: 2 servings
Ingredients: 1
patty ground beef (approximately 4–6 oz.)
1 tbls BBQ sauce Montreal seasoning, to taste Soft tortilla Cooking oil for frying Pico de gallo, to taste Iceberg lettuce, shredded Pickled jalapeño, sliced Spicy chipotle sauce, to taste Dried parsley for garnish
Instructions: 1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, BBQ sauce, and Montreal seasoning. Mix until well incorporated.
2. Take the meat mixture and pat it down onto the center of the soft tortilla until it sticks. Leave an edge all around the tortilla.
3. Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat and add cooking oil. Carefully place the tortilla in the skillet, meat side down and allow the meat to cook and form a crispy crust, about 3-4 minutes.
4. Flip the tortilla carefully, ensuring the meat remains attached. Fry with the tortilla side down until it‘s warm and slightly crispy, about 2 minutes.
5. Remove from the skillet and place on a plate. 6. To assemble: On the meat side of the tortilla, add shredded iceberg lettuce with a generous spoonful of pico de gallo ontop. Add slices of pickled jalapeño, and drizzle with spicy chipotle sauce.

Vibes of Taste
Pasta Bolognese
Bracha Shifrin
Get into comfort mode with this easy pasta Bolognese. This recipe is perfect for those busy nights when you’re still getting back into the swing of things, and it’s a meal both kids and adults will enjoy. It’s simple, hearty, and always a hit.
Yield: 4 servings
Ingredients: 1 1 lb.
1 tsp 1 tsp ½ tsp
Onion, finely chopped Ground beef Salt, to taste Black pepper, to taste Garlic powder Paprika Chili flakes (adjust based on heat preference)
¼ tsp 1 tsp 2 tbls ½ cup 1 jar 1
Turmeric Oregano BBQ sauce red wine Marinara sauce Water, as needed package of Pasta
Instructions: 1. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat, sauté the finely chopped onion until translucent and soft.
2. Add the ground beef to the onions and break it apart. Cook until browned. Season the beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, chili flakes, turmeric, and oregano. Stir well to ensure that the seasoning is evenly distributed.
3. Pour in the BBQ sauce and red wine. Stir, letting the mixture simmer for about 2 minutes so that the alcohol evaporates slightly.
4. Add the marinara sauce. Stir to combine all ingredients. If the sauce is too thick, add water to
achieve the desired consistency. Reduce the heat to low and let the Bolognese sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer the mixture simmers, the richer the flavor will become.
5. While the meat is simmering, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook
according to the package instructions or until al dente. Once cooked, drain the pasta and set aside.
6. Add the cooked pasta to the Bolognese sauce and stir to combine. Alternatively, serve the sauce over the pasta.
7. Plate the pasta Bolognese. Garnish with parsley. Serve hot. 100

Romaine w/tofu Caesar dressing Ingredients

7 1/16 ozs Organic Tofu (soft, crumbled) 1 tbsp Nutritional Yeast 1 tbsp Dijon Mustard 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar 1 tbsp Water 1 1/2 tsps Tamari 2 Garlic (cloves, minced) 1/8 tsp Sea Salt (to taste) 12 leaves Romaine (large, chopped)
Directions 1. Add all of the ingredients, except for the romaine, to a food processor and blend until smooth. 2. Taste and adjust flavors if needed. If the dressing is too thick, add water, one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. 3. In a large bowl, toss the chopped romaine with the dressing until well coated. Enjoy!

Sweet & Sour Chicken Ingredients 1/2 cup Crushed Pineapple 3 tbsps Maple Syrup 2 tsps Tomato Paste 1 tsp Arrowroot Powder 1 1/2 tbsps Apple Cider Vinegar 1 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 lb Chicken cutlets (diced)
Directions 1.
Blend the pineapple, maple syrup, tomato paste, arrowroot powder, and apple cider vinegar in a bowl with a hand blender. Set aside.

My friend had come to hang out on a Shabbos afternoon. We played for a while, until it was time for her to leave. When we came to the door, we saw it was raining outside and she lived too far to go home in the rain with no jacket or coat. I decided to lend her one of my jackets. she took it and left. A few weeks later I went to her house. When it was time for me to walk home there was a surprise! It was raining! I couldn’t walk in the rain. But there was a solution. My jacket! She still had it from the time I lent it to her when it was raining a few weeks ago. I guess she never got around to returning it to me, but here it was waiting to be used! For the same exact reason that I had lent it to her. I was able to walk home dry and happy! Thank you Hashem that this was arranged so perfectly perfect!

One Shabbos, I had a bad stomach ache. My mother gave me Tylenol, and I said that it tasted sweeter than usual. Turns out, she gave me the wrong medicine! It was a very strong medicine that had been prescribed to my sister when she had RSV. When my father came home from shul, he hurried to the Rav to see if we should call Poison Control. The Rav took out a medication book, looked it up, and said that it's fine. Then the Rav said, "I was once somewhere many years ago, and they were giving out this book. So, I took it and I never used it till now. Now I know why I took it!" Thank you Hashem!!

My mother needed to return a box to FedEx, which was a bit far away. She started on the way but missed a turn. She went to turn by the next street, where she saw a FedEx truck! She was able to give the box to the driver, saving so much time!
