In a class I gave recently on creative writing, I mentioned the importance of engaging the readers’ five senses to enhance their reading experience.
“By actively engaging our readers’ senses,” I said, “we lift their reading experience from the page and make it part of a grander journey, as opposed to something flat and two dimensional.”
To me, Sukkos is that grander journey multiplied many times over. Sukkos engages all our five senses, and more — because it’s a journey with the Divine. Indeed, Sukkos represents the Ananei HaKavod that surrounded us back in the Midbar. And when we sit in our sukkah, which represents those Clouds of Glory, we’re surrounded by the Shechinah and enveloped in Hashem’s loving embrace.
Because the week of Sukkos is so holy, it’s grounded in physical elements like a temporary hut and the mitzvah of the daled minim.
And that’s where our five senses come in. Each one of them is engaged during the week-long journey of this special yom tov.
Our sense of sight is stimulated when we enter the Sukkah and behold the beautiful decorations and table spread.
Our sense of touch is engaged when we hold the daled minim and recite the berachah for shaking the lulav. And even before Sukkos, when the men put up the sukkah and cover it with
sechach, the experience is a grand adventure for the tactile sense.
Our sense of hearing is engaged every night of Chol HaMoed as we listen to special music in honor of simchos beis hasho’eivah.
And our senses of smell and taste are engaged many times over, both through the mitzvah of the daled minim and by partaking in culinary delights on yom tov.
As we walk in tandem with the Divine in the upcoming week, let’s keep in mind the kedushah that we’re drawing down with our five senses.
And in these pages, in preparation for this special yom tov, we’ve attempted to address all five senses with a panoply of articles designed to excite, enliven, and add meaning to them all.
Vibes of Craft has ideas for how to enhance the visual appeal of your Sukkah. Vibes of Humor has comical references to the sense of touch and the objects the writer’s family encountered while constructing their sukkah. Vibes of Taste is there to supply you with new ideas for engaging your family’s olfactory receptors and taste buds. And the other features, too, will surely enhance your yom tov experience by supplying you with many new ideas to “hear” and ponder.

Rabbi Mordechai Leifler of Nadvorna
(1824–1894)
It was almost Sukkos one year when a contagious disease ravaged the city of Nadvorna in southwestern Ukraine. The doctors warned people to steer clear of anything that might bring dirt or contamination to the city.
The judge, a wicked man, vehemently supported this request.
As Sukkos approached, Rabbi Leifler began to build his sukkah. The judge, deciding that the “hut” posed a danger to the sanitary conditions of the city, sent a messenger to Rabbi Mordechai, informing him to dismantle it.
The messenger arrived at the tzaddik’s home and relayed the instructions to him. The tzaddik listened to the messenger’s instructions but didn’t take down his sukkah. A day or two passed, and when the judge got wind of the fact that the hut was still up, he sent a group of police officers to warn Rabbi Leifler about the severe punishment he would receive if he didn’t dismantle the hut.
“I built this sukkah so that it can stand; I didn’t build it to destroy it,” Rabbi Mordechai told the police officers, and the officers reported the tzaddik’s words to the judge.
The judge, by now completely incensed, traveled to the tzaddik’s house to demand that the sukkah be taken apart. “If you don’t listen to me,” he shouted, “you will be severely punished.”
Rabbi Mordechai was unimpressed. “I built my sukkah so that it can stand — not to destroy it,” he said. “And know, as well, that Rabbi Meir’l of Premishlan was my great-uncle.”
“I don’t care who your uncle was,” the judge snapped. “Take that hut taken down immediately!”
“If you wait patiently, I’ll tell you a story about my uncle,” Rabbi Mordechai said, and somehow the judge agreed to sit and listen to his story.
This is the story that Rabbi Mordechai of Nadvorna told:
There was once a priest with ten healthy sons. He also had a beautiful garden full of trees. One day, the priest decided to plant flowers as well, and he uprooted some of the trees in the process. Soon after this, the priest’s sons began to die. From the oldest to the youngest, they perished one at a time, until only the youngest was left. Quickly enough, however, the youngest grew gravely ill as well.
Overwrought, the priest summoned doctors, wizards, and witches, in the hope that someone would be able to help save his son. To no avail. The priest’s son grew weaker, and no one had any advice to offer.
Until someone advised the priest to travel to Premishlan, where a holy man by the name of Reb Meir’l resided. “Perhaps this man will be
able to help you,” the priest was told.
Lacking a better option, the priest traveled to Premishlan, where he poured out his tale of woe before Reb Meir’l. When the priest was finished, Reb Meir’l said, “You had a beautiful garden full of G-dly trees, but then you uprooted them. Our Torah states that ‘Man is a tree of the field.’ When you uprooted G-d’s trees, G-d uprooted your trees, your sons. Your youngest son, however, still has some time left, and if you return home, he will get better.”
The priest journeyed back home, and Rabbi Meir’l davened that the boy be cured.
Indeed, when the priest returned home, his son was feeling better.
“Do you understand why I told you this story?” Rabbi Mordechai asked the judge. “As the son of the priest in the tale, is your behavior any way to show gratitude toward my greatuncle for granting you life?”
Hearing the tzaddik’s words, the judge fell before him and began to weep. “You’re right, and your story is true. Please forgive me. I allow you to build even ten huts if you think it’s right.
Rabbi Mordechai, of course, forgave the judge, who left him in peace to enjoy his yom tov.

Yisrael Meir HaKohen Kagan, The Chafetz Chaim
1838–1933
To most people, the name “Chafetz Chaim” has become synonymous with good middos and exemplary behavior. And indeed, in the following story, the Chafetz Chaim behaved in an unbelievable, even extraordinary, manner.
This story took place one erev Sukkos, after the tzaddik’s first wife had passed away. The Chafetz Chaim was remarried to Rebbetzin Freida Miriam at that point, and he was close to seventy years old.
Despite the Chafetz Chaim’s advanced age, he wanted an active part in the building of his sukkah. Sitting in the sukkah is a tremendous mitzvah, and the tzaddik wanted to be wholly involved in its construction. So he headed out to his courtyard to bang and assemble.
The Chafetz Chaim worked on his sukkah for a long while, completely focused on the mitzvah.
At some point, his wife came outside to check on the sukkah’s progress. This was the first sukkos of their marriage, and the sukkah and its location were new to her.
“The Sukkah is very nice,” the rebbetzin told the Chafetz Chaim after surveying it from all angles. “But I think it would look a lot better if you built it in that spot over there.”
The Chafetz Chaim had been building the sukkah in his
the new spot that his wife had suggested.
When he was finished, he went into his house to summon the rebbetzin to ask her opinion.
“It’s a beautiful sukkah,” the rebbetzin quickly agreed. “But now that you moved it to the new spot, I see that you were right all along, and the first spot really was better for it.”
What someone else in such a situation might have done is debatable (quiet acquiescence is probably not one of the popular choices), but what the Chafetz Chaim did is well known. He walked over to the sukkah that he’d just built a second time and dismantled it, rebuilding it yet again in the spot that he’d originally chosen.
courtyard for years already, and he had always placed it in the same spot. Still, in the face of the rebbetzin’s suggestion, the Chafetz Chaim agreed to move the sukkah to the location that she’d suggested, and he dismantled what he’d already built in wordless acquiescence.
Once again, the Chafetz Chaim banged, tapped, and hammered in order to rebuild the sukkah in
Sukkos is a time of family togetherness and joy, and the Chafetz Chaim excelled at bringing those elements together in the most exemplary manner possible.

The Guy Next Door
I figured out soon after the box-hefting incident that the reason I missed the detail about the couches and armchairs was because Xavier didn’t have any furniture to bring in. I mentioned that the Bernsteins’ had left all their furniture behind, with the exception of their personal bits and bobs like photos, which obviously they took with them to Schindler Square to adorn their new anonymous apartment and make it more homey. But as the care home fully furnished their residents’ rooms, and probably with nicer fittings than the residents’ original homes had, there was no point in bringing old furniture with them.
My question was: What would someone like Xavier Roberts, who was obviously youngish
and modern, want with the Bernsteins’ sagging and tatty old furniture? We don’t exactly have a designer home — I would call it shabby chic at best, and just shabby at worst — and even we wouldn’t be caught dead with furniture like the Bernsteins’ had.
I was still in his house, helping him bring in boxes from the van. I was kind of hanging around, hoping he’d open one or two of them, particularly the one that rattled, so I could see what was inside, but he seemed to have no interest in doing so.
As part of my “making friends with the new neighbor and honesty at all costs” policy, I decided to ask him. Back-slapping has never

been one of my strong suits, but it seemed appropriate with Xavier. So I slapped him on the back, not too hard, I didn’t want him to choke or anything, and said, “Hey, dude.”
When has a frum guy from Golders Green ever said “dude”? But it just seemed appropriate. Was I morphing to fit in with the neighbor, rather than him trying to fit in with us?
“Dude,” I said after the backslap, “you look like a well-to-do sort of guy. And Mendel Bernstein said you paid for this house in cash. So why are you keeping all this shabby old furniture? It’ll do your back in, you mark my words. Whenever I sat on that saggy old couch of his, I practically staggered home afterward. Also, this house needs major work, Mendel said. Rewiring, plumbing, etc. You going to do all of that?”
Xavier gave me a very strange look. It reminded me of a sci-fi story when an alien who was really some kind of lizard put on an outer skin that made it look human, but every now and then the lizard part of him broke through, just for a second or two, and people got a glimpse of the alien underneath. The alien covered it up as fast as he could, leaving the humans to wonder if they had imagined what they had seen because the human skin made him look so normal. That’s the best way I can describe the look he gave me, without the glimpse-of-lizard-underneath part.
It kind of chilled me to the bone. I found myself frozen to my spot. Had I hit a nerve of some kind? I backed away a little, literally and figuratively, not wanting to put my nose in any
further.
And then, as quickly as it came, the look went, and he was back to his uproarious laughter, showing all his gnashers.
The lizard was hidden again. But I was left shaken and very disturbed by the glimpse I’d caught.
“I can see you and I are going to be very good friends, Nakman Feld! I like you already! You’re so straight up! You say it as it is! You don’t hold back! What you see is what you get, right?”
“Oh yeah, that’s me,” I said. “Nakman Feld. An open book. Clear as glass, and whatever other clichés you want to put in there.”
The lizard look was back for a blink of an eye when I deliberately mispronounced my own name, but it vanished just as quickly.
But he didn’t answer my question. He turned his back to me and faffed around with some more boxes. He didn’t ask me to help any more after that.
“I’m fine now, thank you Nakman,” he said after a while of me hanging around waiting for instructions. “You can go now. Thank you very much for your help.”
It was like dismissing the hired help for the day. I could go now? I choked down a reply and left. I didn’t say goodbye. But my feelings of unease were accelerating at a rate of knots.
Who was Xavier Roberts?
At home, Debbie quizzed me about where

I’d been and what I’d been doing, and I was evasive. “Just helping out the new neighbor schlep in some boxes,” was all I’d say.
“He doesn’t look like he needs help,” Debbie said, her back to me as she worked at the sink. “Looks big and strong enough to handle things by himself. In fact, he looks like he could lift you with one hand, let alone the boxes.”
I said nothing, because it was true. I didn’t even know why I had offered. I was probably curious more than anything. And in the end, he hadn’t opened a single box in my presence, so what had I gained, other than aching biceps and a sense that things were even less what they seemed than I had previously thought?
“So,” Debbie went on, viciously scalping a carrot, probably to show her displeasure with me for my nosiness, and yet guiltily being herself just as nosy and wanting to find out what I had discovered, “what did you find out? You were in his house, the Bernsteins’ house. What has he changed?”
“Nothing that I could see,” I replied, feeling sorry for the carrot. “Of course, he has a massive TV, which they didn’t, and he’ll probably have to move some light fixtures to get that thing on the wall. But the old furniture is still there. He hasn’t brought in any new ones, by the look of things.”
“That’s odd in itself,” Debbie commented. “Their furniture was fit for the dumpster, very little else. Why would he keep it? I’m sure the Bernsteins were only too glad to leave it behind and enjoy the new stuff in Schindler Square.”
“Beats me,” I said. “It just has an air of… oh, I don’t know…that he doesn’t plan to put down roots here. It all looks very temporary.
Like he’s just passing through on his way somewhere else.”
“Passing through? Doesn’t make any sense. Why hand the Bernsteins a suitcase full of cash if he doesn’t plan to stay? Why not just rent it from them?” Debbie, as usual, hat hit the nail firmly on the head. She stared at me as if I were the next carrot in need of scalping.
“Nachman Feld, I know I’m repeating myself, but it’s obvious to me, and it should be to you: That guy next door bought the house because he wants to be our neighbors. Specifically us.”
It was slowly becoming somewhat obvious to me too, even though it remained a ludicrous idea, so I still fought against it. “Why not the neighbors on the other side, the Waldmans?” I suggested, trying to sound like a real lawyer fighting a case in court. “Why specifically us?”
This didn’t give Debbie pause, not even for a second, except to shoot me a how-dumbcan-you-get look.
“Because the Waldmans didn’t get a suitcase full of cash from Xavier Roberts, the Bernsteins did. And as the house next door it’s clear that it’s us, that he wants to be close to. People know that we’re close to the Bernsteins and that the Bernsteins were looking to move to Schindler Square anyway and just needed the cash. This must have been a perfect opportunity for the guy.”
She paused to decapitate the unfortunate carrot, and then slung it into the pot of soup on the stove. “The question is, why? What does he want with us?”

S S STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS
TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR ANGER
In Mindfulness for Teen Anger, Dr. Mark Purcell tells the following story:
One evening, an old Cherokee man told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside all people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.
“One is Bad. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, selfpity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
“The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”
The grandson thought for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf wins?”
The old Cherokee man simply replied, “The one you feed.”
Feed the good “wolf”!
Rifka Schonfeld
SOS 09/27/2023 52 732.930.2500
We all deal with anger once in a while. But, during the teenage years, anger is something that can take over both teenagers’ and parents’ lives. This anger can feed that “bad” wolf and make him grow out of proportion.
Dr. Les Parrott, in his book Helping Struggling The Adolescent, explains that anger is an important part of adolescence. In fact, anger is a part of the process of individuation that occurs in adolescence, when teenagers continue to separate from their parents and establish their own individual personas. So, if you are worrying that you are like Ruti, always frustrated and angry at your parents (and even your siblings or friends), then you should know that it is a completely normal part of growing up.
Anger becomes a problem if you do not know how to handle it. To that end, I have put together a “cheat sheet” in order to help you manage your anger before it gets the best of you:
Mindful Mediation:
Research has shown that if you focus on your breath and on the present moment (and do not allow any outside thoughts to trickle in), that can help you deal with the anger once you stop your mindful mediation. In fact, you might not feel so angry once you are done focusing on your breathing for five minutes.
Maintaining Perspective:
With so many new experiences coming your way while you are in high school, it can be hard to separate the genuine concerns from the slight annoyances. Things like physical harm or verbal bullying are undisputed concerns, whereas someone occasionally prying into your life or unintentionally stifling you are smaller issues.
One way that you can help control your anger is through recognizing the genuine reasons to get upset and ignoring the inconsequential things. Once you are able to distinguish the “big” and “small” stuff, it is a lot easier to maintain perspective and cool down.
Redirecting Anger:
Sometimes you might get angry at a parent or sibling because of another issue that occurred earlier in the day with someone else. Taking a step back and asking yourself, “Why am I really angry?” can help you redirect your feelings at the appropriate source.
Avoid Triggers:
There are probably situations that automatically make you angry (such as your parents not giving you enough space, even though you are always following their rules). Being aware of these triggers can help you take control of the situation. Before walking through the door, remind yourself that your parents – because they love you
SOS 09/27/2023 54 732.930.2500
– will probably ask you a multitude of questions. Rehearse the answers you will give in order to satisfy both yourself and your parents. This way, you will be prepared for a potentially frustrating encounter.
Time Management:
When you are stressed, you are more likely to express anger in a destructive manner. Likewise, if you are sleepdeprived, you are more likely to snap at those around you (even without real provocation). A great way to avoid these feelings is to manage your time effectively. Don’t leave big assignments and studying to the night before they are due. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. That way, you will be better equipped to handle anger when confronted with it.
Talk it Out:
One of the best ways to control your anger is through calmly talking to others. When not in the heat of the moment, it might help to talk to your friends about what is making you upset. You can also think about whether anything would change if you spoke to your parents about the way you feel. If you think they would be receptive, ask your parents when a good time to sit down and talk would be. Setting aside time for your relationship will strengthen your ties with
your parents and ultimately smooth out the kinks in your relationship.
Throughout these often trying teenage years, it is important to remember that anger is not bad. Actually, it is a really important part of growing up and becoming your own person. In fact, if you don’t ever get angry now and then, I would be a bit worried! After all, feeling angry every now and then is part of growing up and encountering new and challenging experiences.
Rather, it is how you handle your anger that determines your quality of life. Positive anger management can be constructive. When expressed positively, it can help
improve your self-respect and even help others gain more respect for you. When you speak with others about your feelings and come up with resolutions together, you are building stronger foundations for relationships.
As you grow older, events will continue to occur that will make you angry – so practicing constructive anger management techniques will benefit you in the future as well. Just bear in mind, mad is not bad – it’s all about how you react to that anger. Will you feed the “bad” wolf? Or instead, will you feed the “good” wolf and allow him to win?

As Sukkos approaches, some of us think about lulavim and esrogim, some think about wardrobes — do we have enough tights to last eight whole days? — and some think about wood and poles. Oh, and the menus, of course! But if there’s one thing that breathes enthusiasm into the endless stream of tasks that make Sukkos happen, it’s the memories we (or at least some of us) hold dear, and the memories we hope to produce.
Having grown up on the sixth and top floor of an apartment building in a
mostly non-Jewish neighborhood, I was afforded a unique glimpse into — I’m not sure what, exactly. Hmm. Still, my experiences were certainly interesting. Especially since we were the only family with a sukkah on our porch, in a neighborhood where most residents didn’t even know what a sukkah is.
When we would build our sukkah, we kids felt almost like Noach building the teivah as we wondered, Why are we the only ones around here doing this? The main difference between us and our ancestor was that instead of

laughing at us, our neighbors tried not to stare too much as they muttered some words to each other in Russian (probably to the effect of “Remind me not to use their contractor when we make our extension!”).
The first part of building the sukkah involved unraveling the tarp where the sukkah parts — as well as some inevitable and always expected visitors — had resided throughout the year. We once found an adorable bird’s egg lodged in one of the crevices, and we were in quite a pickle.
Whereas many holy readers’ first thought might be “Shiluach haken!” mine was “Save the birdie!” We considered building the sukkah around that egg, but ended up using it in the kugel as a commemorative token instead.
Just kidding. I can’t quite recall what we did with the egg, but I’ll tell you this: Never transfer a bird’s nest into a cardboard box for safekeeping.
And the birds were the best of them. I care not to discuss the creepier crawlier ones.
Next came the poles. Those numerous identical poles that I don’t think I will ever understand how people figure out, year after year, where to place. Not that my opinion was ever asked for, but if it was, I would suggest making some sort of color-coding system just to save the hour it takes to figure out the whole pole situation.
I remember when, for a few years,
we took to raw wooden panels, giving our Sukkos experience an agrarian twist. Honestly, I think my brother just wanted to test-drive his new drill (the neighbors weren’t any more impressed by this sukkah, though).
If that wasn’t enough, we had to stand on a chair close to the railing of the terrace (did I mention we lived on the sixth story?) to hook said poles together after the “which goes where?!” was finally figured out. One of us would hold someone else’s legs, and the latter kid would stand on the chair, the idea being that in case he would go overboard, the first kid would go with him — the first kid usually being a girl so that her skirt could become a makeshift parachute if necessary.
Standing as the parachute kid is about the only part I ever had in building the sukkah, because as most of you know, the youngest usually gets the job no one else wants — and really, who wants to be holding someone’s legs all day? Unraveling tarp is way more fun.
But, as you also know, the leastfavored job has to be sold in some way to the kid who doesn’t want it, so by the time the canvas was going up, I was usually in the kitchen enjoying whatever candy my mother wanted to get rid of to keep me busy while the real work was being done. Honestly, I didn’t mind — as long as I got to hang whatever awe-inspiring decoration I’d brought home from school that year.
Actually, now that I’m digging up

these memories, I do recall helping with the sechach. Oh, the sechach. I don’t know if anyone else remembers the days before the plastic little fastener thingamajigs appeared on the scene — or even wants to — but I was the neurotic one who would naively believe that the more of those we tied, the less chances the sechach had of flying off in the massive wind and/or rain storm that would inevitably hit on the first night of Sukkos (or does that happen just on the sixth floor?).
So I’d tie and tie and tie, and then tie some more. All in the same spot. As if the sechach was going to actually hold steady through the first days of yom tov. Makes me wonder what our Middle Eastern neighbors might have though had they seen a sechach cruise off of our porch (“Follow that carpet!”).
When we finally finished tying the sechach to the beams and the beams to the poles and the poles to the canvas, we would just collapse onto the nearest chairs and forget about attaching the entire sukkah to the porch…until the winds would come on the second night of yom tov as a reminder, and we’d all have to hold down the poles with our feet. So someone had to be
on duty at all times to make sure the entire contraption wouldn’t simply fly somewhere far, far away.
Things got even trickier when the landlord would come knocking on our door, holding random parts to our sukkah (“I found a bamboo stick in front of the building and had a hunch it was yours”). The rule of thumb was that if anything flew over the railing, we all had to duck out of sight — as if the towering beams and half-built hut didn’t give us away.
But for me, all that work became well worth it when I stepped out into the star-spangled night, wiped the sweat off my brow, and gazed up at the sechach, fancying which spot would be lucky enough to behold my felt-covered foam masterpiece that I had yet to bring home from school.
And there was nothing like the climactic moment when we’d all gather (read: squish) into the sukkah on the first night of Sukkos and hear Kiddush to the beat of some Spanish rhapsody emanating from someone’s car out front, hoping that by next year our sukkah would float, nests and all, to Yerushalayim.
Landing someplace on a sixth floor there.

Sukkos
Unity Has the Power to Change Decrees!
The Klausenberger Rebbe gives an incredible explanation of the pesukim in Parashas Emor that describe the mitzvah of Sukkos. The pesukim read:
tefachim — around twenty-two inches by twenty-two inches (Sukkah 27b)! This is similar to the miracle that was experienced during the times of the Beis HaMikdash, when the physical walls stretched to fit myriads of people, and there was still sufficient room for everyone to bow to Hashem.
For a seven-day period you shall live in booths. Every resident among the Israelites shall live in booths, in order that your [ensuing] generations should know that I had the children of Israel live in booths when I took them out of the land of Egypt. I am Hashem, your G-d. (Vayikra 23:42–43)
Chazal explain that these pesukim teach us that the entire Jewish nation can potentially sit in a single sukkah measuring seven by seven
The Klausenberger Rebbe asks how such a thing could happen, and he answers that it’s only when Jews are steeped in unity, love, and camaraderie that we merit such miracles. He quotes the Chasam Sofer, who comments that he once saw this happen in chutz la’aretz. The Chasam Sofer was referring to his own shul, where hundreds of unified students were all happily contained in a small area.
The Gemara tells us that when there is great love between people, two individuals can dwell

peacefully on the edge of a sword. If their love is not strong, however, even sixty amos — approximately ninety-six feet — are insufficient (Sanhedrin 7a).
This insight allows us to understand how appropriate it is that Sukkos falls out in the month of Tishrei. After the days of Selichos, seeking forgiveness from those whom we have wronged, and merging the divisions between us, we are worthy of sitting in a single sukkah and experiencing the presence of the Shechinah. Our sukkahs commemorate the Ananei HaKavod — the cloud of Hashem’s presence that enveloped us after we left Mitzrayim. When we’re joined in love and friendship, we merit the embrace of Hashem’s protection.
This teaching reminds me of a beautiful story the Sanzer Rebbetzin’s daughter-in-law told shortly before Rosh Hashanah one year. The story was of a chassid of the Chozeh MiLublin who traveled for many weeks by horse and buggy to be with the Rebbe for Rosh Hashanah. The chassid arrived a few days before the yom tov and went in to meet the Rebbe. When he entered the Rebbe’s room, however, the Chozeh barely glanced at him. Instead, he quickly told him, “Go home!”
depressed.
A group of chassidim, en route to the Chozeh, saw him and asked him why he was so sad.
“I spent weeks traveling to the Rebbe, and he sent me home!”
The chassidim insisted on drinking a l’chaim with this chassid. They then bentshed each other for a good year and began to dance. After a few minutes of dancing, they suggested, “Let’s go back to the Rebbe. We’ll make sure you get in to see him again.”
We’re very different, speak different languages, and send our children to different schools. She was, however, the first one to greet me, ask me my name, and welcome me. I’d never have imagined we’d be friends. Yet that first warm interaction created a friendship that I’m deeply grateful for and treasure.
It took much convincing on the chassidim’s part that they would indeed take care of the brokenhearted chassid before he finally agreed to return to the Rebbe with his newfound friends.
Upon entering the Chozeh’s court, the Rebbe warmly greeted everyone — including the chassid whom he’d sent home earlier. The Rebbe wished everyone a year of berachah.
On motza’ei yom tov, the chassid bravely asked the Chozeh for an explanation.
The chassid was devastated. But when the Rebbe told someone to go home, he went home…
The chassid began his journey home, and on the way stopped at an inn to refresh himself. He sat in a corner, alone, brokenhearted, and
The Chozeh, who had the power to see things that most humans could not, explained, “I saw that it was decreed that you would not live out the year. I told you to return home so that you could spend your last yom tov with your family. But then you met a group of Jews who cared deeply about you and your happiness. You drank together, danced, and wished each other well. And that togetherness changed the decree.”

Achdus has the power to change decrees.
The power of connection and belonging is amazing.
On a personal note, about five years ago, we moved from the neighborhood we’d been living in for more than a decade to a new development. I missed my friends, and since most of the women in the new neighborhood didn’t know each other, I arranged a let’s-getacquainted evening.
At the end of the event, an energetic and successful makeup artist with a large, supportive family approached. “I have eight sisters and inlaws in the older neighborhoods of this city,” she told me quietly. “But I don’t think I’ve ever experienced connection like tonight.”
I was flabbergasted. This woman was to me the epitome of poise and sparkle. And yet she valued the power of connection and new friendships.
Her words often replay themselves in my mind, reminding me of a truth I keep rediscovering: People crave real connection.
And it’s easy enough to spread feelings of achdus and make connections:
Have you ever entered an event and not recognized anyone there?
How about walked into a wedding and seen someone standing on the side, alone?
Sat at the park and seen a new face?
The minute it takes to go over and welcome someone new can make
that person’s day.
I clearly remember the first woman who approached me in my new neighborhood.
We’re very different, speak different languages, and send our children to different schools. She was, however, the first one to greet me, ask me my name, and welcome me. I’d never have imagined we’d be friends. Yet that first warm interaction created a friendship that I’m deeply grateful for and treasure.
When we meet an acquaintance, see a new face, or walk into shul this yom tov, let’s make an effort to connect.
In his sefer Nefesh Chaya, Rav Pincus discusses how we often prevent our own growth in avodas Hashem by thinking that an action we plan on taking is too small and inconsequential. One of his many examples is the greatness of smiling even at someone who’s already happy.
Smiling and reaching out to others leads to meaningful connections and unity.
May we merit true harmony this yom tov and be enveloped in the cloud of Hashem’s glory, truly feeling the embrace of the Shechinah.

Chapter 5
The Junior Diplomats The Junior Diplomats
“Looks like they’re moving in,” Lillian whispered. She and Jake were upstairs, closer to the thirdfloor landing, but if she leaned slightly over the banister, she could see the man and boy at the far end of the hallway of the floor beneath them.
“Tavi gam et hatik hayarok — Bring the green bag too,” a woman’s voice rang out from within the apartment that the man and boy were standing next to.
Jake and Lillian smiled.
“Israelis,” Lillian mouthed. She and Jake both knew basic Hebrew, thanks to the Sunday school they’d attended in Boston.
“I wonder why they moved here,” Jake said.
“Maybe the father’s a diplomat like Dad,” Lillian suggested.
Recap: Jake and his family go on a trip to Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. When they return home, they see a father and son, each with a yarmulke on his head, near the empty apartment in their building.
“Maybe.” Jake’s tone was doubtful. He hopped up the last two steps to their floor and paused near the door of their apartment. “Come on. Let’s go in.”
“Soon,” Lillian said. “I want to see the family first. They for sure have a girl.”
“Says who?” Jake twisted open the door to the

Greens’ apartment without waiting for an answer, and stepped inside.
Lillian remained standing in her spot. Jake might not have been all that interested in the comings and goings of the new family moving in beneath them, but she knew there was little she could do to get rid of the curious feelings that filled her. They were part and parcel of her personality.
Three minutes passed.
Four.
Finally, Lillian’s wait was rewarded in the form of a slight girl with curly black hair coming out of the apartment downstairs. With a loud exclamation the girl reached out for a small knapsack and brought it into her house.
“So they do have a girl,” Lillian murmured. “I was right.” There was no one in the hallway with whom she could share her excitement, though, so she forced herself to move away from the banister and up the last two steps of the staircase to the thirdfloor, where the Greens lived.
Before Lillian could press down on the door handle of her house and head in, she heard the new boy from downstairs again. It sounded like he was whacking something against the wall next to his house — a small knapsack? A ball? Then he shouted gleefully, “Kadur regel — Football!”
The new boy liked sports? Lillian felt a slight sense of misgiving. If the new boy was into sports, and not into collections or interesting tidbits of knowledge, she wasn’t confident he’d get along with her older brother. Still, she was determined to get along with the younger sister. After all, what other friend choices did she really have in this new city?
A girl, and apparently a Jewish girl right around her age, had moved into the
apartment on the floor beneath her. Could life get any better than that? ***
The evening hours at the Green home passed in a whirlwind of German lessons with Herr Schultz, the German tutor, who tried teaching Lillian and Jake to twist their mouths into impossible shapes and to repeat impossible-sounding phrases. (“Wie geht es dir. Say it like that. The words mean, ‘How are you?’ ”) This was followed by dinner and bedtime so that thoughts of the new family somehow slipped to the back of Lillian’s mind.
As she lay in bed, however, thoughts of the new family came to her again, and she told herself that first thing in the morning she’d get her parents’ permission to go right over and introduce herself.
***
Indeed, by ten o’clock the next morning, Lillian had finished introducing herself to the Katzes, and by 10:05 she and Rachel — the name of her new neighbor — had become fast friends.
A short while later, both Lillian and Rachel were comfortably ensconced in the Greens’ apartment together. Their apartment was far less cluttered than the Katzes’ apartment was due to all of the suitcases that the family had begun to unpack all over the place.
“I was so nervous to start out in a new school without knowing a soul,” Lillian told Rachel after she’d introduced the new girl to her mother and the two friends were settling into the living room. “I’m really happy that we’ll be together and have these few days to get to know each other.”
Jake, stepping out of his bedroom and overhearing his sister, rolled his eyes. He seemed skeptical about his sister’s

professed nervousness. Lillian was never nervous about meeting anyone new.
The two girls settled down to a game of Rummikub on the floor, and Becky toddled right over.
“Two,” Becky said, lifting one of the pieces. “Two.”
Rachel smiled. “She’s so cute,” she said, reaching out to ruffle the little girl’s hair. “I wish I had a little sister.”
Lillian smiled and tickled Becky’s chin. “Yeah, she is cute. And annoying too at times.” The girls proceeded to place tiles on their board as Jake went off to the adjacent kitchen to get a bowl of cereal and milk for himself.
Mrs. Green, at the stovetop behind him, eyed him with concern. “Adjusting?” she asked.
Jake shrugged.
“It’s going to be so much fun doing school things together,” Lillian’s voice rang out loudly from the living room area. “I’m really happy your family moved here.”
“We’re not exactly going to be able to do everything together,” Rachel told her. “Don’t forget I’m a grade older than you.”
Lillian waved the issue away. “So what? During lunchtime and recess we can for sure be together, and we can walk to school together too whenever it works out.” Mr. and Mrs. Green had pointed out to Jake and Lillian that one of the reasons they’d selected the Jewish school for their children was due to its close proximity to their house. It was only about a tenminute walk away.
The girls’ banter continued for several minutes, and Jake finished eating. But then something hit him, and he jumped
right up and headed over to the living room area. “Hey,” he said, pointing at Rachel accusingly. “You’re speaking in English. Why?”
Rachel and Lillian turned toward Jake, and Lillian wiggled her eyebrows wildly — clearly trying to make her older brother realize that he’d just committed a weighty social faux pas. “Uh,” Jake muttered. “I mean… I…uh…I thought you spoke Hebrew.”
Rachel shrugged and put down a set of threes on the playing board. “I speak to my family in Hebrew,” she said. “But English is for sure almost my first language.”
“Rachel and her brother went to an international school in Holland for three years,” Lillian explained. Then, in an I-toldyou-so tone of voice, she added, “Their father’s an ambassador.”
“Oh,” Jake said slowly. “An Israeli ambassador, right?”
Rachel nodded.
Jake was silent as he processed this information. “When did your family live in Holland?” he finally asked.
“We lived in Holland up until two days ago,” Rachel said. “We moved here as soon as our mission there ended.”
“Why?” Jake said. “Why didn’t your family just move back home to Israel?”
“I don’t know,” Rachel said quietly. And then, inexplicably, as though there was something that she knew she needed to hide but wasn’t quite sure what it was, Rachel’s cheeks turned bright red. “You should talk to my brother,” she said. “He’s sure there’s an interesting reason.”

Chimpanzee
עזנאפּמיש
The chimpanzee belongs to the monkey-ape family and is one of the smartest animals in the universe – if not the smartest.
Despite their being very charismatic and extremely popular in zoos all over the world, they are very aggressive. They can easily kill one another. Even the eccentrics that raise them as pets, learned their lesson the hard way –after being injured, losing a finger, or being otherwise permanently damaged – an animal remains an animal.

Chimpanzees are very friendly and will live in large groups containing up to 40 individuals. Together they will protect their territory, search for food, and feel safer from their predators.
Especially close are a mother and her baby. Contrary to other animals, the little chimp will remain with its mother even up to 10 years, when she already has another baby.
The mother will have 1 baby once in three years or more. For the first 3 months, the baby won’t step down to the ground, only clutch the mother tightly on her abdomen. At 6 months old it will learn to ride on her back. Remaining with the mother for such a long duration is critical for later on in life by learning to build a nest, hunt, fight, and so on.
Every evening they build a huge nest (16 ft wide!) on a tree to sleep in (picture left). They will choose a tree with a strong bark, break branches, layer them like a mattress, and weave small twigs and leaves into it.

The Provider of all living things provides the humpback with a fascinating means of obtaining its food. During the winter it barely eats, living off the reserves of fat it has stored during the summer. In the summer, it swims thousands of miles in a large group, migrating to the cold waters of the Arctic or Antarctica where its food is found.
A humpback can swim 16,000 miles a year in the migratory process! How does it know the way? Does the vast ocean contain highways? Scientists don’t have an answer to this question, but we know that Hakadosh Baruch Hu guides the humpbacks all along the way. Ma rabu masecha Hashem!
In these waters they find large schools of very small-barely visible-sea creatures called krill (see photos below). One whale blows a large, closed circle of bubbles, creating a ‘net’ (100 feet in diameter). In reaction, the krill swim into the center of the circle. The whale continues forming concentric rings, each one smaller than the previous one, while vocalizing. At this point, the krill are concentrated in the center of the circle, and the rest of the whales swim in with their mouths open. They swallow thousands of gallons of seawater along with the krill. Then, they close their mouths and push the water out through a sieve of sorts, remaining only with thousands of fish in their mouths.

The majority of scientists maintain that the chimpanzee is the smartest creature in the universe. One of their main characteristics is producing tools which are then used for their needs.
When they find a tough nut, they will search for the right stone and use it to crack it open. Likewise, they will break off a branch, tear off all leaves, and stick it into a termite nest. The tiny termites, in self defense, bite into the twig. Then the chimpanzee will withdraw the twig and heartily eat the termites (see pictures left!).
A scientist that studied them for years, once observed a group of chimpanzees sharpening twigs with their teeth, making it razor pointy and then using it as a dart to nip and catch small animals that they chased into hiding! They can learn to play, ride a bike (see pictures top) and even sign-language. A certain chimpanzee learned over 800 signs over the course of many years, and even taught some of them to others! World renowned is the chimpanzee that was sent up to space after many years in training.

Chimpanzees protect their territory with tooth and nail. The size of the territory is determined according to how many fruit trees are in the area. In tropical forests it will be only approximately 30 sq. miles, but in other areas it can reach over 300 sq. miles.
At times they can set out in well-organized groups to attack neighbors or simply search for prey for food. Crawling on all four lined up in a row (see pictures), in total silence, they will approach the neighbors or just wander until they find what they’re looking for. Then the leader – usually the oldest, strongest male – will signal and they will begin attacking with shrill cries. Swiftly they will jump and climb up the trees, surrounding the other monkeys in all directions, and then approach to catch them.
Thousands of chimpanzees are located in zoos around the world. Because of the good diet and excellent treatment they receive, their lifespan is longer, sometimes quite over 60 years. Thousands are also found in research centers where they are analyzed and scientists attempt to understand the extent of their knowledge and intelligence.

Peanut Chews
For a Chol HaMoed snack that’s sure to be enjoyed by everyone, try making these delightful peanut chews! They’re quick to assemble, and both kids and adults will enjoy them for their perfect blend of crispy, creamy, chocolaty goodness.
Ingredients
2 cups rice krispies
½ cup peanut butter (smooth or crunchy)
2 Tbsp oil
1/3 cup honey
1 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
For garnish:
Melted peanut butter
Flaky sea-salt
Instructions
1. Line an 8x8 inch baking dish with parchment paper, ensuring some overhang for easy removal. Set aside.
2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine the peanut butter, oil, and honey. Stir constantly until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and quickly stir in the rice krispies, ensuring that they’re evenly coated with the peanut butter mixture.
4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, pressing it down firmly to create an even layer.
5. Melt the chocolate either in a microwave-safe bowl, heating the chocolate in twenty-second intervals and stirring after each interval until fully melted, or on the top of a double broiler.
6. Pour the melted chocolate over the rice crispy layer in the pan, spreading evenly with a spatula.
7. Melt approximately 3 tbsps. peanut butter and drizzle over the chocolate. Use a skewer or the tip of a knife to create swirl patterns. Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the top for a gourmet look.
8. Place the baking dish in the refrigerator and allow it to set for at least two hours, or until the chocolate is firm.
9. Once set, remove from the refrigerator and use the parchment paper overhangs to lift it out of the dish. Place on a cutting board and cut into squares or bars. Store in an airtight container.

Crockpot Meatballs
Ingredients
8 Garlic (large cloves, divided)
6 cups Canned Whole Tomatoes (drained)
1/4 cup Tomato Paste
1 Yellow Onion (chopped)
1/2 tsp Red Pepper Flakes
2 T. Italian Seasoning (divided)
1 tsp Sea Salt (divided)

Breaking Plates without Spilling Secrets
The Apiryon Shidduchim Initiative
“You’re the first person I have ever told,” the father of the bachur confided, between tears. “Even my brothers and sisters don’t know. They keep on suggesting shidduchim for our metzuyan son and we keep on turning them down. People are even offering apartments. But there’s no way we could say yes, without telling everyone about the machalah and the treatments… and we just can’t. The years are passing and they all think my son is a snob — that no one is good enough for him.”
But the Apiryon advisor on the other end of the line knew the real story, and he was prepared to help them find their son’s zivug, without compromising their dignity, divulging their secrets, or even knowing their name.
RMZ473*. Three capital English letters followed by three digits. That was the code the Apiryon computer system had issued to the family. A code that connects to the shidduch information and medical information the family had chosen to submit — all without any mention of their name. (It’s enough to leave the name and contact information of your rav, a different trusted person, or even an anonymous phone number or an email address that you open especially for this purpose.)
Putting a Premium on Privacy
As a caring community, we often discuss solutions to the shidduch crisis. Yet for some singles the crisis is actually two-fold. It might be a genetic condition, a physical illness, a mental health struggle. There might be a complicated home situation such as divorce, or a matter of family background such as for baalei teshuvah and their grown children. Or perhaps it’s a matter of age or weight. Whatever the issue, all these singles have an additional obstacle preventing them from finding their match: they don’t want to tell the world. They don’t want every yenta and her neighbor discussing what they went through and oy, isn’t that hard, and oh, I hope they find the right one eventually. They want discreet help and they want many options without needing to tell their story to many people — not even to the various well-meaning shadchanim who specialize in more challenging shidduchim.
This is where the Apiryon Shidduchim Initiative comes in. It is an entirely anonymous and secure, Israel-based international shidduchim database that, with the assistance of skilled and sensitive advisors from a range of communities, collects and suggests many possible matches for these singles. It is an unprecedented system that benefits from the guidance and direct, on-going supervision of the Amshinover Rebbe shlita and is run with kavod and with tznius. It is intended to help every Orthodox Jew who is struggling to find their zivug for any reason whatsoever.
Five months ago Apiryon ran exactly one article in the Hebrew papers. From that piece and word of mouth alone they already have approximately 1,000 singles in their system. Chassidish. Litvish. Sephardic. Every day their staff fields 150 calls in Hebrew and Yiddish, of which 10-15 come from new singles who want to join. Now the Rebbe has instructed Apiryon to take the next step by inviting the English-speaking community to sign up. Now English speakers can be a part of this revolutionary shidduchim system. Apiryon’s six secretaries, ten shidduchim advisors, and its medical advisor are all truly eager to help your family.
Who signs a single up for Apiryon? Ninety percent of the time a member of the family is in touch with one of the secretaries, however, shadchanim who specialize in complex matchmatching also contribute profiles. Once a suggestion progresses, the submitting shadchan can serve as the representative of the single
they registered, and an Apiryon advisor will represent the other side. The shadchanus gelt will be split, but the joy will be complete. If the information for both sides was submitted by the families then an Apiryon advisor will orchestrate the entire process, unless the family prefers an outside shadchan.
The Most Sensitive Suggestions
Privacy issues aside, at times conventionally-generated shidduch suggestions can be downright offensive. Ever call a shadchan and get off the phone wondering: Is that what they think of me? What kind of an idea is that? (Join the club…)
As one of Apiryon’s advisors put it: “In shidduchim, it’s so easy to hurt people’s feelings. I can suggest a match that seems relevant yet the family will be insulted because they see things differently. But when the computer suggests it there is no one to be upset at. Even just filling out our detailed questionnaire helps the families get their bearings as to where they are on the shidduchim map.”
The Director of Apiryon elaborates: “Our system eliminates those hurt feelings because the suggestions are generated by the computer, based on the parameters that you yourself set. The twopage registration form begins with the basics such as languages, mentality, and community and moves on to questions pertaining to lifestyle, socio-economic status, education, dress, and the ability to perform tasks of everyday living. The second page is where the applicant checks off which type of person they will consider. Is the girl willing to wear a tichel? Is she insisting on someone from her own community? Is the boy willing to consider someone older than him? Is he insisting on yichus? The more flexible the applicant, the more codes, aka shidduch suggestions, the computer will put on that person’s list.”
One young woman, in addition to her health issue, had an unusual request: She would only consider young men with the name Yaakov. Umm… okay. But that’s why the computer only found one possible match. In such a case, a diplomatic Apiryon advisor will encourage the applicant to pull back on her demand. On the flip side, one man in his mid-30’s marked down that he was open to ages 18-40. His list of suggestions filled the entire screen. He might do well to refine his search parameters as well.
The Signature Apiryon Process
Once a single has a list of computer-generated suggestions, an Apiryon advisor will begin the process of sharing redacted information between both sides of one such suggestion, to see if there is general interest and to confirm that they are medically compatible. At that point the traffic light icon next to each of their codes will be green (active/available). Depending on the issues at hand, it can take a month for both sides to review the medical documents and anonymously confer with the other side’s doctor. If that aligns then the advisor will ask for first names and confirm that the given name of the girl does not match the name of the boy’s mother, and the same for the boy and the girl’s father. Once those boxes have been checked the couple reach ‘Yes, they can meet’ status. And the light turns yellow…

Since the program’s inception, Apiryon’s devoted volunteer shidduchim advisors have worked on 128 suggestions, and every suggestion is significant. “Just having very relevant options to consider touches these families so deeply,” relates another of their seasoned advisors. “The other day a father told me: ‘I don’t know how to thank you. We’ve been waiting years for the phone to ring.’”
The Mazel Tovs Begin…
From morning to night, calls are being made from Apiryon’s Beitar Illit headquarters to interested singles worldwide. And yesterday the first two Apiryon traffic lights turned red. Mazel tov! A very special couple just got engaged.
Mrs. Rivkah Leah Weisman** of Yerushalayim had the zechus to bring that inaugural shidduch to fruition. For her, it was the closing of a circle. A year and a half ago a mother came to her, crying. Her daughter was 23, they had a complicated family situation, and their phone hadn’t rung in a year. That conversation gave Rivkah Leah the inspiration to begin redting shidduchim for her and for other struggling singles. She found herself promising that mother: “I will do everything I can so your daughter gets engaged.” But, despite her tremendous efforts, Rivkah Leah wasn’t getting anywhere, until she submitted the girl’s details to Apiryon. “I called and left a message on their machine. Me and how many others? But no, they called me back in less than an hour. The system is so efficient. And when they didn’t reach me, they called again and again until they did.
“You cannot imagine how deeply these people care,” she continues. “Even once the suggestion had been made and I was working on it, Apiryon called me regularly to check in and to see if they could help things progress. The system offers extremely intelligent suggestions that are very, very shayach. Enchanted, astounded. I don’t have words to describe how remarkable this is. My information as an individual shadchan is so limited, but the moment you have access to such an incomparable resource you increase the chances for any single with a challenge. Even filling out their form is mind-expanding. It really gets people thinking about where they can flex. Maybe Erloi would take Pinsk. Maybe a girl who wants a Litvish bachur could build a beautiful life with a chassidish one.”
This week that mother called Mrs. Weisman back and she was choking on her tears again. But this time they were tears of joy. “’This is the happiest day of my life,” the kallah’s mother finally got out. “’We received so much more than I ever dreamed of.’” And, adds Rivkah Leah, “It would not have happened without Apiryon.”
Soon all of that happy couple’s confidential information will be removed from the Apiryon system. If you lose a document from your doctor, don’t expect to find it on file here. Once a person’s shidduch has been found, all their data is erased. Because Apiryon is here to help every single find their zivug and build the Jewish home they have been dreaming of, with dignity and discretion.
May the next mazel tov be yours.
Ten Steps to Finding Your Zivug
1. Send an email to: office.apiryon@gmail.com or call 516.874.6161 during the afternoon hours from 12:00 pm –4:00 pm EST (when it’s 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm in Eretz Yisrael). You will receive an initial signup form to fill out, or a link to one.
2. The system generates a code for you, and you receive a more detailed registration form. (The form must be filled out and returned within 48 hours.)
3 . The system generates shidduch suggestions based on the data you submitted and then those suggestions are sent to our shidduch evaluation department.
4. The head of the department reviews the options and sends the most relevant one to an Apiryon advisor to facilitate.
5. The advisor calls both sides to request additional information — all without knowing their names.
6. In the case of singles with health issues: Once the necessary information has been collected and all the details indicate an appropriate match, an anonymous conference call is held between Apiryon’s doctor and a representative from each side. If necessary, further clarifications will be made.
7. After all the clarifications that can be made without disclosing their identities have been made, then, with the consent of both sides, the names of the singles are made known to one another. From here on, the shidduch progresses like any typical shidduch.
8. The shidduch can be facilitated by an Apiryon advisor or by an outside shadchan agreed upon by the two sides.
9. Mazel tov!
10. The system deletes the names of the couple, along with all of their information.

Palm Trees Lulavim
The lulav is such an important part of Sukkos, but what type of tree does it grow on, and where exactly can you find it? Read on to learn the answers to those questions as well as some interesting facts.

Origins of the Lulav
The Lulav comes from the date palm tree and palm trees, in general, grow in hot to warm climates near beaches. Countries with warmer temperatures are called tropical and subtropical climate areas and are usually close to the equator. This means countries like Australia, Asia, America, India, Japan and the South Pacific are home to many palm trees. But there are some palm trees that grow in rainforests and deserts and some types even grow in colder climates.
There are over 2500 types of palm trees in the world! Some have fruit, some don’t. Some are tall, others are short. Two popular palm trees include the date palm and the coconut palm, but other famous palm trees include: the Royal palm, Mexican Fan palm, Areca Palm, Pygmy date palm (also called the Triple palm plant), Pindo palm tree, Mediterranean dwarf palm, Mazari palm, Royal dwarf palm, Bottle palm, Canary palm, and the Chinese fan palm. Hashem created many types of palm trees, it’s quite amazing!
Still, a kosher lulav must come from a datebearing palm tree, as the passuk states: “And you shall take for yourselves on the first day…. date palm fronds” (Vayikra 23, 40). The date palms are lulavim come from usually grow in Egypt, Morocco, Spain and Israel.
Palm Tree Fun Facts
• Palm trees often grow very tall with coconut palms growing to almost one hundred feet and date palms growing as high as seventy-five feet.
• Dwarf palms, or shorter palms often used in gardens, grow to around six to nine feet, quite short.
• On the other hand, the Wax Palm in Columbia can reach a height of two hundred feet, or twenty-five stories!
• Palm trees famously bear dates and coconuts but there are other types of fruit palms too. There’s the Pejibaye palm, or Peach palm (which hearts of palm comes from); the African oil palm (used to produce palm oil); and the Jelly palm, or Pindo palm, which produces pindo palm fruit.
• The average palm tree lives between seven to eight decades, but some species live only forty years and others live up to a hundred.
• Palm fronds need to be cut regularly, but if it’s done right, new and large leaves will sprout in the old leave’s stead.
These days, Israel has huge orchards with date palms that have been earmarked specifically for their lulavim.

What are Palm Trees Used For?
Palm trees are famous for their fruit, but they also have many other uses:
• Smaller palm trees are used to create beautifully landscaped gardens for starters.
• Palm oil can be processed and turned into wax.
• In some areas of the world, palm oil is used to heat homes.
• Palm wood is sometimes used in construction. Because palm fronds disintegrate slowly, it’s a cheap alternative for roofs, and might, for example be used as a roof over a chicken coup.
• Palm wood is used to make wicker furniture. (Wicker is often weaved from vines, grasses and plants.) You’ve probably seen woven baskets and furniture like chairs and couches with a woven palm design.
• The leaves of the palm (called fronds) are often used for Schach.

The Harvest of Lulavim:
Lulavim need to be cut before the leaves of the fronds open as a kosher lulav needs to be tightly closed at the stem, have a straight stem, and be of a certain length (around 1316 inches). This means they need to be cut early on.
In Israel, where many religious kibbutzim have lulav orchards, the lulav harvest period takes place about six months before Sukkos. That means that it’s around Purim time when the lulavim are pruned from the trees and dipped into a substance which prevents fungal growth. These lulavim are then refrigerated until Sukkos time. The Tirat Tzvi Lulav Orchard is one of the
largest lulav farms in Isarel. Around 200,000 lulavim are harvested there each year. In fact, ever tree at the Tirat Tzvi Lulav Orchard produces around fifteen lulavim! Lulavim are harvested about once every two weeks so that the stockpile of lulavim from the kibbutz is gradually added to.
Closer to Sukkos, the lulavim are sorted according to quality and packed into shopping boxes or sent out to fulfil local orders. Lulavim from the farms are then delivered to communities around Israel and world-wide to places like Europe, South America, Australia and the United States.
Palm Trees in the Torah:
Palm trees are a central part of the Torah and Jewish history. They are considered strong and beautiful trees and their fruit (dates) are one of the sheva minim. Below, are some places where palm trees are mentioned in the Torah:
• Obviously, the first reference to the lulav is from Sefer Vayikra, when the pasuk describe the requisite four species.
• In Parshas Devarim, the city of Yericho is described as the valley of palm trees. Today, it’s still home to palm trees that bear the healthiest and most delicious dates.
• In Sefer Shoftim, Devorah the prophetess sat under a palm tree to judge the Jewish people.
• In Sefer Yechezkel, when describing the Beis Hamikdash, the Navi mentions palm tree ornaments on the walls.
• In Tehillim, the passuk talks about tzaddikim flourishing like palm trees (Tehillim 92, 13) because the tree grows and develops well.
• In Divrei Hayamim, Shlomo HaMelech places palm trees among the gold decorating the Beis Hamikdash.
• It’s no coincidence that the palm tree which produces both leaves and fruit is the base for both mitzvos and simple enjoyment. This G-d given tree fills many important roles and is in abundance in our very own land, Eretz Yisrael.

Funny-looking Palm Trees:
Beyond the height of the palm trees, some palm trees grow in an interesting shape or manner.
Theres the Triangle Palm which received its name because when the fronds fan out of the tree the tree’s shape resembles a triangle.
The Dwarf Majesty Palm is a single, thick, green trunk with dark green leaves lending to its majestic look.
The Mediterranean Dwarf Palm looks like a cluster of trunks. It’s different from most palm trees because it grows in Europe and can survive cold temperatures.
The Bismarck Palm has fan-shaped palm leaves that grow in all directions, creating a 3D-like crown shape.
The Bottle Palm Tree is fittingly named due to its short, fat trunk which gets thinner towards the top.
The Fishtail Palm is multi-stemmed and has glossy green leaves that resemble a fish tail.

SUKKAH Decorating
Tips & Tricks
B.N. Spetner
It’s that wonderful time of year again — time to get out our Sukkah supplies and decorations. Like many of us, you’ve probably had years when your sukkah looked like the kids just threw everything at the wall — where it landed, it stayed! While such a method has its place (new baby in the family; no time; hey, sometimes it makes the kids happy to be in charge!), maybe this year you want your sukkah to have a calmer and more organized feel. And that’s what this article is about. While the process of hanging sukkah
decorations can feel overwhelming — after all, there are multiple pieces to examine and determine a location for — remember that ultimately there isn’t one correct way to put them all together. Don’t be afraid to play around with a few different arrangements before deciding on the best one for your space, and remember that the most pleasing setup may be the one you least expect.
Bearing all of that in mind, the following are some great time-saving ideas for how to hang things on your holy walls.
Vibes of Craft
09/27/2023 142 732.930.2500
Materials
Here I list different adhesives and tools for hanging decorations. Pick what works for you.
1. A Hot Glue Gun
Hot glue is perfect for laminated posters, which tape sometimes struggles to stick to. It’s also great for use on cinder block walls.
2. Staples
Don’t underestimate the usefulness of a good stapler. To utilize the stapler best, open it completely, place it so that it’s level with the sukkah’s wall, and press down.
3. Tape
Masking tape and painter’s tape to hang up your posters are always a great backup!
4. Measuring Tape
This will come in handy when you want to properly space your creations.
5. Level
If you’re particular about getting things straight, this tool is the answer.
Step #1
Plot Your Wall
Set out the pictures you want to hang by propping them against the walls and considering your options. Take all possibilities into account, and then have someone hold up the decorations to the wall while you stand back and appraise. If you’re grouping several pieces together, arrange and rearrange them on the floor until you find a position you like.
Vibes of Craft
143 09/27/2023 www.lakewoodvibes.com
Step #2
Measure
When hanging pictures at eye level (or if you’re setting up a grid or a series of pieces), precise measuring is necessary for even spacing. If the overall look you’re going for is less precise, then you can skip this step. Remember as well that your sukkah is yours, so there’s no need to be afraid of breaking standard norms by hanging in the manner that you feel is nicest.
If you do choose to measure, bear in mind the following tips:
•To hang something at eye level, the center of the decoration should be 57 to 60 inches above the floor.
•The general rule is to maintain a distance of three to six inches between decorations.
Step #3 Hang
Once you’ve decided where you want to hang each decoration, make a pencil mark on the wall for each piece, and then hang using whichever adhesive or tool will work best.
Step #4
Framing (optional)
If you want to frame your poster and hang it like a piece of art, there are many ways to do this. Options include
Vibes of Craft
09/27/2023 144 732.930.2500
everything from budget-friendly plastic frames to high-quality metal or composite wall mounts.
Once you’ve chosen your frame and brought it home, remove the frame hinges or clips and any papers inside and get ready to insert your artwork. Clean the glass first to remove any debris or residual materials.
Remember that rolled-up posters won’t always lie flat, so consider affixing them to a thin foam board to make framing easier and to provide an extra layer of protection. If you’d like, use a mat board that’s somewhat larger than your poster, cutting it so that there’s about half an inch of blank space all around. This will give your art a more layered look.
Once your poster has been properly affixed to the board, insert it into the frame and reinsert the glass cover.
Step #5
Enjoy the process
Go easy on yourself! An empty wall is way worse than an imperfectly hung picture. Remember to put on music and bear in mind that you’re doing a holy mitzvah — which is far more precious than perfectly placed decorations!

It was Friday and our family was going to our grandparents in Brooklyn for shabbos. We were running very late and my mother was nervous because she wanted to leave earlier. Finally, We got into our car and started to drive. We were about to leave our block, and suddenly my mother saw an elderly woman on the floor by the sidewalk in front of a neighbor's house. My father stopped the car and my mother rushed out to help her!!! When My mother helped her sit up, she saw that the woman was bleeding profusely on her nose!!! My father took his phone, came out of the car and called Hatzalah! I felt really frightened. In the meantime, My mother got tissues from the car and put them on her nose to stop the bleeding. She asked the woman if she lives nearby, and the woman said she is staying with her daughter. My mother tried ringing the doorbell, but nobody was home. Finally, Hatzalah arrived and took her to the hospital. My parents came back into the car and my father started to drive. In the meantime, I realized what a Kiddush Hashem we made. It also was Hashgacha Pratis that we were late for our trip. If we hadn't been late, we would have missed when the lady fell and we wouldn’t have been able to help her.

My father works in a sleepaway camp in the country and they have a boy that drives us to camp in a shuttle everyday (its like 20 kids) and one day it was rainy and we were driving and our bus went off the road a little and then we slipped in some mud and smashed in to a stop sign and knocked it down then we fell in to a small ditch with mud and our bus tipped over and fell onto a tons of trees but if the trees would not have been there we could have been badly hurt and who knows what would have happened but b”h we got out safely and no one was hurt and hatzolah came right away to help us! THANK YOU HASHEM FOR SAVING US!!!

One day I was running around my pool gate playing a game called Circle three. It was in the fall and so the pool was covered. I was running around and I was very into the game that I wasn’t looking where I stepped. I tripped over the pool cover’s lines that were sticking out from the gate. I started screaming. Quickly my sister called my mother who came running over. She sat me down on a chair. I was bleeding on both of my knees, elbow, and on the side of my waist. My mother called to my sister to get Band-Aids. She had to get a big band because I got a big bad scrape. All of a sudden my mother saw a tick crawling on my head. She got tweezers and took it off. If I would not have gotten hurt then we would not have found the tick!

This wasn't our first home Buying experience, but it was for sure the best! We are seriously thrilled with the service, attention, and expertise that the team at Yaniv Waknin's Home Guide brought to the Table. We were house hunting from out of state, and Yaniv's and his agents always made time for us. Their knowledge of the area, property values, specific quirks and limitations of areas made it way easier to house. hunt from a distance. And Yaniv's familiarity with even the more complex. legalities of uncommon situation was impressive.
We are officially HOME owners!!!! Thank you to Yaniv Waknin who has become one of our friends and helping us find our forever home.
Yaniv is super wonderful, He knew exactly what my husband and I wanted after looking at couple houses at first, he is very dedicated and patient. We looked at over 20 houses. He made the process very clear and fun.
When we look for our investment property He will be helping us again. we trust him and love him!
Yaniv really made himself available for video tours. (And was really thorough) and hunting down property that fit our specific vision. and... he found it! he guided us on the real value of the home and through a few of the more complex pieces of this particular closing. We always felt Confident In the process. They are awesome, and fun to be around to boot!
