hen I saw B. N. Spetner’s awesome works of art in this week’s “Vibes of Craft” column, I couldn’t help but be wowed. You can refer to last week’s editorial and feature to learn more about the history of daylight saving versus standard time and clock making — but this week’s clock-making craft really takes us into the forwardthinking world of clocks and the future. Who’d have thought that a book could become a clock? I’m all for repurposing old things and getting rid of as much clutter as possible, but the thought never even crossed my mind — until I saw this week’s brilliant art project. So yes, you’ll definitely want to check out that column, but beyond that, the whole idea of clocks and time-telling has really gotten me thinking. The third chapter of Koheles is all about time. As the first pasuk states, “Everything has an appointed season, and there is a time for every matter under the heaven” (Koheles 3:1). The chapter goes on to enumerate the many aspects of the universe that have an appointed time: “A time to give birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot that which is planted…” (Koheles 3:2), but the verse that really caught my eye, apropos the time we find ourselves in now, is: “A time for war and a time for peace” (Koheles 3:8).

Am Yisrael is not a nation that engages in war for the fun of it. But when provoked, we respond in selfdefense. The Torah is full of the many wars fought by the Jews. As Shlomo HaMelech writes, there’s a time for war. But there’s also a time for peace. And even as war and unrest continues to plague our nation, our minds and hearts are filled with longing for better times — times of peace — because that is who Am Yisrael is: a nation of peace. Ultimately, our strong desire for peace and harmony stems from a deep yearning not just for a temporary respite or illusory safety (as Shlomo HaMelech writes, these states are transient, and periods of peace ultimately give way to periods of war, and vice versa) but rather from a deepseated, inherent yearning for the truest form of peace possible — the period of peace that will be heralded with the arrival of Mashiach Tzidkeinu, when “a nation shall not lift a sword against another nation.” May the pangs of war we’re feeling now indeed be chevlei Mashiach (the birth pangs of Mashiach), giving way to the most brilliant of all time periods — immediately.

Chayei Sarah Elevate the Mundane
When Sarah Imeinu passes away, the pasuk states:
The following two stories illustrate this point.
“ויהיו חיי שרה מאה שנה ועשרים שנה ושבע שנה שני חיי שרה — And the life of Sarah was one hundred years and twenty years and seven years; [these were] the years of the life of Sarah” (Bereishis 23:1).
Rav Avigdor Miller had a private room in his home that no one was permitted to enter. He often would spend time there alone. Once, one of his grandchildren was overcome by curiosity and managed to sneak in and hide beneath the desk.
Why were Sarah’s years split into three parts — one hundred, twenty, and seven? Rashi says it’s because “every digit is to be expounded upon individually: When she was one hundred years old, she was like a twenty-year-old regarding sin. Just as a twenty-year-old hasn’t sinned because she isn’t liable for punishment, so too when she was one hundred years old, she was without sin. And when she was twenty, she was like a sevenyear-old as regards to beauty.” The Noam Elimelech asks why the pasuk emphasizes that Sarah was like a seven-year-old in beauty. He explains that there are two levels required to serve Hashem. The first level is that we are careful to fulfill all positive and negative commandments. The second level is that we elevate permitted actions such as eating, drinking, and adorning ourselves. One can imbue even his daily activities with kedushah by directing his thoughts toward Shamayim. When a person eats or drinks or wears beautiful clothing, the intention should be to use these items to serve Hakadosh Baruch Hu. If a person doesn’t use these items with Hashem in mind, he will constantly feel unsatisfied with himself and his purpose in the world.

When his grandfather arrived, he waited with bated breath to see what would happen. He saw Rav Miller take a beautiful red apple and turn it this way and that. Rav Miller then commented, out loud, on the apple’s shiny red skin. He called it Hashem’s “attractive wrapping paper that begs us to partake of it and take a bite.” He then went on to describe the skin beneath the wrapping that protects the fruit so it doesn’t dry out, and the “computer chips” inside (the seeds), which have been “programmed” to produce additional trees and apples when they fall on the ground. He elaborated on the apple’s crunchy texture and sweetness, and then, after quite some time, he raised the apple high in his hand, made the berachah on it, and took a bite. ******* The Brisker Rav was once staying in someone’s home and asked his host to bring him a banana and a pear. The host did so, and a little while later, they both left for minchah. Upon their return from davening, the host noticed that the rav hadn’t yet eaten the fruit. He asked for an explanation, and the Brisker Rav

said, “I had been missing two berachos to fulfill the directive of saying one hundred berachos a day, and I therefore asked you for the fruit. However, I received an aliyah at minchah and recited two berachos, one before and one after the aliyah. Once I said the two berachos in shul, I fulfilled my obligation, and now I no longer need to eat the fruit.”
A relative of mine once boarded a bus to the Kosel and saw that the driver looked very drained. “How are you feeling?” he asked the driver.
This is what the pasuk emphasizes by alluding to Sarah’s equal beauty at age one hundred, age twenty, and age seven. Sarah’s level of avodas Hashem was such that she didn’t have any sins. She neither forwent any positive commands nor transgressed any negative commands.
To this, my relative pointed out that the driver had the tremendous privilege of driving myriads of Jews to the Kosel every day, thus enabling them to spend their time davening to Hashem. The bus driver said that he had never thought about his job in this manner, and assured my relative that this outlook would service him in the future.
And she was like a child who doesn’t use his or her externals to impress others. A twenty-year-old, on the other hand, is usually self-conscious about looks and the reactions of those around her. Their dress and attitude reflect this. However, when Sarah adorned herself, her intentions were completely for the sake of Shamayim. As the Noam Elimelech concludes: “כל כוונתה בכל קישוטה והתייפותה רק לשמים — All her intentions in her adornments and embellishments were for the sake of Heaven.” The Sefer Charedim tells us that when one eats or drinks or sleeps or takes care of their physical body, he should bear in mind that he is doing kindness like Hillel HaZaken. Hillel was once walking down the street with his students, and they asked him where he was headed. Hillel answered, “I’m on my way to fulfill a mitzvah! I’m going to take a bath.” He continued to explain that a statue made for a king requires cleansing and polish. How much more so are we required to take care of our bodies, which are created b’tzelem Elokim, in Hashem’s likeness. Hillel also compared our neshamos to guests. Just as one prepares a room for a guest and outfits it with all that he may need, so a person must make sure that his body is equipped to contain his soul. Reframing our experiences can elevate them entirely and put us into a mindset more in keeping with our mission in this world of serving Hashem l’sheim Shamayim.

“Al hapanim (Terrible),” the driver answered. “My life is a mess. Nothing is going right, people are annoying, and I’m fed up.””
So much of our day is spent cleaning, cooking, shopping, and taking care of our physical needs. Rav Avigdor Miller would encourage young mothers changing multitudes of diapers and children’s clothing to remember that they are like Hakadosh Baruch Hu, Who is malbish arumim — He clothes the poor. When it’s time to clean the dishes for the third time in one day, do another load of laundry, or scrub the sticky floor from the juice our toddler spilled yet again, we can think of the kohanim, who cleaned up the ashes, swept the floor of the Mikdash, and ran back and forth to bring the korbanos repeatedly, thus elevating and beautifying our mundane actions. One of my friends looks after her elderly father-in-law in a small three-bedroom apartment. She admitted that there are times when it’s very challenging. When I asked her what gives her the strength to continue, she said, “Whenever my lack of privacy begins to annoy me, I remind myself, ‘Hashem, this is your house,’ and that gives me renewed energy.” No matter what stage of life or task we’re involved in, we too can reframe and elevate our physicality like Sarah Imeinu, who adorned herself for Hashem’s sake. The Chazon Ish

Rav Shlomo Lorincz was one of the early cChareidi members of the Israeli Knesset. As such, he interacted regularly with the gedolei hador. and related several stories about the Chazon Ish.
Rav Lorincz assumed that the Chazon Ish had misunderstood. He repeated the story of what had happened in England. He added, for emphasis, “I did not say Kaddish.”
In 1952, Rav Lorincz traveled to Bournemouth, England, for Rosh Hashanah. In those days, many well-todo people spent yom tov in hotels there, and Rav Lorincz went to raise money for the Chazon Yechezkel Youth Village, established by Zeirei Agudas Yisrael.
But the Chazon Ish had understood Rav Lorincz just fine.
On the first night of Rosh Hashanah, Rav Lorincz spoke at one of the hotels. He captivated the audience, who gave him generous pledges.
“You are mistaken,” he said. “You did recite Kaddish. What do you think is the purpose of Kaddish? When a son makes a kiddush Hashem, he brings pleasure and honor to his parent’s soul. What could bring more pleasure to your father than what you did — forgoing your own personal comfort to travel to a foreign country, where you had to daven without

The Chazon Ish placed tremendous importance on being osek b’tzarchei tzibbur.. He held that this critical mission overrode many other considerations. But not all of them. Rav Lorincz recounted that his first trip abroad was scheduled for Cheshvan of 1948, in the middle of Israel’s War of Independence. Rav Lorincz was worried that if he left the country, he might not be able to return easily. Furthermore, he was not in good health at the time.
But that was not the end of the matter. He asked Rav Lorincz point-blank: “Are you sure that your wife is totally maskim that you go?”
Rav Lorincz felt terrible. “I can’t believe that I missed saying Kaddish for my father! It’s all because I’ve become a politician, and I shlepped all the way out here to Bournemouth for Rosh Hashanah. It’s a sign that I should quit politics and go back to yeshivah, where I belong.”

When Rav Lorincz returned to Eretz Yisrael, he went to see the Chazon Ish.

First the Chazon Ish addressed the health issue. “The needs of the klal override the danger to you as an individual. I will daven for you, and you will be healthy.”
By the next morning, Rav Lorincz had found himself a more suitable minyan. But because he hadn’t said Kaddish the night before, it slipped his mind to say Kaddish the next day. His father’s yahrzeit came and went, and Rav Lorincz hadn’t said Kaddish for him even once.
Much to Rav Lorincz’s shock, the Chazon Ish replied, “I don’t accept what you said. You did recite Kaddish!”
But the Chazon Ish replied, “Doing a chessed for a Jew who needs help will be at least as big a mitzvah and illui neshamah.”
He went to ask the Chazon Ish whether he should go, and explained his two concerns.
Not only was it Rosh Hashanah, but it was also his father’s yahrzeit. But because he was davening by himself, he couldn’t say Kaddish.
“I’ve decided to resign,” he said. “I got so busy with askanus that I didn’t even say Kaddish for my father.”

When Rav’ Lorincz heard that, his resolve to retire from public life entirely dissolved. That retirement would not take place, as it turned out, for another 33 thirty-three years. R’av Chaim Kamil, the late Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivas Ofakim, once told Rav Lorincz a similar story.: The Chazon Ish had asked an avreich to help a sickly woman with some chore. “I would do it,” replied the avreich, “but then I’ll miss my regular mMinchah
The Chazon Ish knew that Rav’ Lorincz’s wife had agreed, otherwise R’av Lorincz would have mentioned that as another consideration not to go. But the Chazon Ish still insisted on hearing that Mrs. Lorincz was 100 percent% okay with Rav Lorincz traveling. This gave Rav’ Lorincz an astounding insight into the Chazon Ish’s priorities. For tzorchei tzibbur, you can risk your health and rely on the koach of tefillos to protect you. But not even tzorchei tzibbur can justify upsetting your wife. One year, Reb Moshe Midner (the menahel ruchani of Yeshivas Slonim) met Reb Shmuel in the street, looking rather overwhelmed. The moment that Reb Shmuel saw Reb Moshe, he ran over and led him to his house. But because he was so distracted, he accidentally locked the Rebbe in when he ran out of the house. A few minutes later, he suddenly stopped short. “Oy! What have I done? I just trapped Reb Moshe!” He ran home as fast as he could, set the tzaddik free, and begged him to forgive him. “Everything is forgiven,” Reb Moshe said. “From the minute I saw you I could tell that something was going on. What happened?” “Last year I suffered heavy financial losses, and I had to close the factory. “I don’t even know how I’m going to put food on the table,.” Reb Shmuel said bitterly. “Two days ago my wife gave birth. Now I have to run the whole house myself, because I was forced to let my household staff go. Look at this washtub sitting in my fancy living room, where I’m trying to hand-wash dirty diapers. I’ve never even done laundry before!” “Don’t worry,” Reb Moshe answered him gently. “I have a story to tell you.” *** One time there was Jew who made his living running a tavern. But then a competitor opened up shop and drew away all of his clients. Then, in the middle of one wintry night, one of the poritz’s servants came knocking at his door. The poritz was 28

making a party, and he and his friends had already drunk all of the poritz’s fine wines. The servant was looking to purchase more wine for his master.
“And so,” Reb Moshe Mindner concluded, “we see that nothing is beyond Hashem. Go to the market, and take the first deal that you are offered.”
“I’m sorry,” said the Jew. “I’ve been out of business for a while already. I don’t have a drop of wine to sell you.”
Reb Shmuel went out the marketplace, curious to see how Hashem would help him. He soon bumped into an acquaintance of his, who also ran a tannery. “I’m very happy to see you,” the man said. “I have a business deal for you.”
The servant left emptyhanded. But he was soon back, at his drunken master’s orders. “The poritz says that you’ll get him the wine that he wants — right now — or you’re a dead man! Besides, I know that you have wine. I saw a row of barrels in your yard. I tried to roll them, and I felt that they were full. So no excuses. Give me wine now!” The Jew knew that there was nothing in the barrels except for some wine dregs, mixed with a lot of rainwater. But what choice did he have? So he filled up large bottles and gave them to the servant. The Jew sat in his house, frozen in fear. He knew well the punishment that awaited him when the poritz discovered the ruse. But an hour later, the servant was back. The poritz’s drunken friends had declared that they had never tasted such fine “wine.” The equally drunken poritz, eager to impress his friends, sent his servant back to buy out the Jew’s entire stock. The next morning, the poritz summoned his wine steward. “After our experience last night, we see that the Jew has the best wine. I want you to buy from him exclusively.” The Jew used the generous payment from the poritz to buy a large amount of fine wine from his competitor. He sent the wine to the poritz, who again paid generously. From then on, he was back in the wine-making business.
The man explained that he had ordered a large quantity of unprocessed hides, but when he started soaking them in his lime pits, it became clear that he had been tricked. Instead of the horse hides that he had ordered, they had given him donkey hides, which usually disintegrate when they are processed. If that wasn’t bad enough, the donkey hides were filling up his lime pits, so he couldn’t even get started processing a new batch of hides. “Why don’t you buy the donkey hides from me at a rock-bottom price, and put them in your lime pits,” the man suggested. “You’re not using them anyway.” Ordinarily, Reb Shmuel would never have accepted such a bad deal, but he followed Reb Moshe Minder’s advice. Amazingly, despite all expectations, the hides did not disintegrate. Reb Shmuel was able to sell them as topquality merchandise for much more than he had paid for them. The profit enabled him to get back on his feet. He reopened his business, and within a short time he had regained his former standing. Reb Moshe Minder’s yahrzeit is Chof Gimmel Cheshvan. I stared at the one-line email for a spell longer than necessary, as if willing it to change into something that made sense. I wasn’t sure whether to call Debbie up to take a look. My knight-inshining-armor persona wanted to protect my damsel in distress from harm, but my practical side knew what would happen to me if I hid anything from her. And it wasn’t pretty. “Uhh, Debbie,” I called, and my voice sounded strangulated and unnatural. Debbie was upstairs like a shot, looking anxiously at me. “What’s up, are you okay?” she asked me urgently, making me wonder which one of us was the knight and which was the damsel in distress. The

thought wasn’t attractive, so I pushed it under the carpet and just indicated wordlessly at my screen. She looked at it gravely. “This isn’t funny,” she said. “Ya think?” I said stupidly. “Can we work out who sent it? It seemed we were doing a fair amount of “uhhing” recently. “I’d rather you didn’t know the content, just the origins of it, if that’s possible.” “Then delete the content before you forward it to me,” Betzalel said patiently. “I don’t want to see what it says if you’ve been up to no good.” “I haven’t been doing anything!” Debbie protested. “But okay, we’ll delete the content. Can you look at it ASAP, please? It’s very urgent!” “I’ll do my best,” Betzalel said. I pressed forward on the email, after making sure the original was safe. I sent it to Betzalel without the content — just a blank email with numbers as the address. Neither of us was very computer techy, but this seemed pretty straightforward.
“Burner email?” Debbie asked. “And I think I’ve heard of VPNs…” “Yeah, it kind of self-destructs after a while, hence the name ‘burner.’ VPN means Virtual Personal Network. It hides the sender’s own IP address, and you only get the VPNs. This sender was careful and sent this email from a public network, not from private WiFi in his home or office, so that’s effective in keeping his origins hidden too.” “Is there a way around it?” I asked into the air around the phone. “Can you do anything about it?”
I sat back and looked at Debbie. “They wouldn’t be that stupid as to let us know who sent it, I’m guessing,” I said.
“That would depend on why you want to find out who sent it,” Betzalel answered. “I wouldn’t want to get involved in outing someone whose origins deserve to be kept secret.”
Debbie shrugged. “People make mistakes,” she said hopefully.
I looked at Debbie. She looked at me and shook her head: Don’t say.
“If he was going to make a mistake, he would have an email address like spyinformation@M15.com or something,” I said.
I didn’t.
Debbie looked at me, and then her phone rang. “It’s Betzalel already,” she said, sounding excited. She swiped her phone on. “Yes, Betzalel, you have an answer?” She put the phone on speaker. “You’re on speaker with Nachman, if that’s okay.” “Yeah, it’s okay,” he answered. “Anyway, whoever sent this used a burner email and a VPN. It’s pretty simple stuff, actually. People all over are doing it these days to avoid being spammed, or have emails harvested by spammers,

all kinds of reasons. There’s nothing really high tech about it anymore. But at the same time, it’s pretty effective. The VPN hides the origins of the sender and only shows you the IP address of the VPN. Hence the numbers.”

“All I can divulge,” I said carefully, “is that the person who sent this…” I stopped. I was going to say, “Deserves whatever he gets.” But then I thought again. He was warning me off Xavier Roberts, the real baddie here. Why did that make him deserve whatever he’d get? “We will, thank you so, so much,” Debbie said, pulling the phone away from me and switching it off speaker, no doubt before I could do any more damage.
But the noise turned out to be Avi coming back from wherever, smashing open the front door and falling over his own feet. He was a bit like that — tall, gangly, and prone to falling over his long limbs at unexpected times.
She disconnected. We sat there for a while, looking at each other. “What shall we do about that?” I asked her, indicating the email on my screen, as she seemed to be in charge.
At least she had her priorities right.
“I think we should…” She paused. She was probably considering how techie I was, and obviously decided not very. “Print it out, keep it somewhere safe, and delete it from the computer. We don’t want the kids finding it.”
Avi, red faced and embarrassed, picked himself and his belongings up, and apologized to everyone for frightening them.
“The kids,” I said imperiously, “are not allowed on my computer.”
“Dinner, I think,” Debbie said, and I noticed her hands were shaking. She was struggling to hide this from the kids and doing a creditable job.
“Yeah, like that’s ever stopped them,” Debbie said. I opened my mouth in reply and then shut it again. She was right. “I was going to suggest putting it into a secret folder somewhere on your computer that the kids couldn’t find,” Debbie went on, “but I think that’s beyond you. It’s beyond me too, don’t get me wrong. And I’d rather not call Betzalel back and ask him how to do that. He’s suspicious enough as it is.” “Printing it out and putting it in a secret drawer somewhere is the non-techie way of putting it in a secret folder on my PC,” I said loftily. “It works.” So that’s what we did. And then I deleted it and felt very cloak-and-dagger. “What now?” I asked her, as she still seemed to be very much in charge of events. The sound of a minor explosion, very close by and very loud, made us both jump in terror. Debbie let out a shriek. We both thought about hiding behind the door of my study and shoving some furniture against

“I slipped on the floor, it’s too shiny,” was his only excuse.
Dinner was a sober affair. The kids tried hard to lift the mood, but Debbie and I were both very locked inside our own heads. The food, as usual, was excellent; nothing had changed there. But the sparkling wit of my usual conversation was missing that night. In the end Rikki said, “C’mon Dad, what’s going on? You look like you lost a fifty-pound note and found a tenner.” I tried hard not to look at Debbie. Neither of us spoke for a while. Then I said, lamely, “Oh, just work stuff. Nothing you need to concern yourself with. Sorry for being so morose. I’ll try harder. Anyone want a game of Trivial Pursuit?” Me acting jolly when I patently wasn’t was a dismal failure. I just sounded weird and unnatural. And no — no one wanted a game of Trivial Pursuit. But if anyone thought I was acting weird, my reaction that evening couldn’t compare with anything that happened the following day. To be continued…

WHO’S LOOKING FOR A SOCIAL BUTTERFLY? “I am not asking for my child to be the life of the party, or a social butterfly. I just want her to be happy and have some friends of her own. She is a wonderful kid, and I hope someday others can see that.” Many parents of children with deficits in social skills echo this sentiment. They know that their child has many wonderful qualities to offer others, but their poor social skills often hamper them from establishing meaningful relationships. All children want desperately to have friends, but those who lag behind their peers in social competence often fail miserably when trying to make friends.
Shifra’s mother invited the girls to her home after school to work on the project there. Her daughter was delighted at this rare social opportunity. This is what her mother observed: “The two other girls were trying hard to create a poster while Shifra was clowning around, doing childish antics and showing off. One of the girls got upset and decided to go home before the work was half-finished. The other girl became provoked by Shifra’s behavior and a fight broke out, with both ending up in tears. Shifra was miserable. I was just trying to have fun,’ she sobbed. “Everyone’s so mean to me.”
When a friend of mine expressed concern that her ten-year old daughter, Shifra, was unhappy in school and had no friends, I suggested she find a way to observe her daughter closely when interacting with peers. That opportunity came up when Shifra’s teacher grouped the students for a class project, placing Shifra with two other girls to work on a poster.
For most children, basic social skills (e.g. initiating conversation, working cooperatively, respecting boundaries, observing conventional rules of courtesy) are acquired naturally. But for others, the process is much more difficult. Whereas many children learn these basic skills simply by exposure to social situations and positive role models, those with social skills deficits often need to be taught skills explicitly.
NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION Children like Shifra may not have a reading disability in the usual sense but they are often unable to “read” cues related to social information, particularly nonverbal cues or “body language.” Or they may read the cues but fail to gauge the strength of the emotions conveyed.
Consider the following social interactions between sixyear olds that highlight the breakdown in communication when, due to lapses in social skill development, nonverbal messages are not absorbed.
In understanding how these children repeatedly suffer failure in social situations, it’s important to note that verbal language alone will often not convey all the information needed to understand a given social situation. According to experts, between 25 to 65 percent of the communication in an average conversation is actually nonverbal, consisting of information that is related by facial expression, vocal intonation, pauses in the conversation, and body language. These nonverbal messages must be processed together with the verbal communication for the true overall meaning to emerge. Those with nonverbal deficits, however, may be forced to rely on as little as 35 percent of the communication in order to discern what is being relayed and how to respond. It is no wonder, then, that the messages they receive are often skewed and misleading. This holds true not only in social situations but in an academic setting as well, which explains why children with social skills deficits often experience learning difficulties. 42

Eli and Meir are playing “Hatzalah.” They strap on walkie talkies and zoom off in make-believe Hatzalah cars (scooters) to a Hatzalah call, while they simulate the wail of sirens. Moshe comes along and asks to play. “I wanna be a Hatzalah guy, too,” he tells them. “I can go on back of your scooter,” he suggests hopefully. Eli and Meir are clearly not interested and their faces show it. (nonverbal communication) Eli moves his body to block the space behind him so Moshe can not get on (body language). Without pausing to register that he is not wanted, Moshe turns swiftly to Meir and boards his scooter before Meir can block him. “Hey, get off!” Meir yells. “Why? There’s room for me in back!” whines Moshe. “Tough. We don’t let,” Meir snaps, pushing him off. Crestfallen, Moshe gives the scooter a kick and the scooter and Meir fall over together. Meir jumps up and shoves

In this typical conflict—that has a thousand variations wherever children are playing together—what is striking is that, in an effort to gain entry to the game, Moshe chooses the very tactics (aggressiveness, force) that are guaranteed to trigger if not intensify his social exclusion.
--Continually reinforce social information. Many social skill deficits are caused by a lack of basic social information, such as how to break the ice when being introduced to someone. Tips such as smile, nod cordially; make eye contact, ask a question; offer to help in some, way may seem self-evident but they are far from obvious to the socially inept. --Provide the child with a positive model of appropriate social skills. Be certain that your behavior mirrors the skills that you are teaching your students. (e.g., temper control, courteous listening). Role-play situations where the child is prompted to empathize with another person or practice new social skills by simulating life-like situations that call for the exercise of those skills. (asking directions; working out a disagreement; apologizing; giving praise; initiating or disengaging from a conversation)
With the benefit of coaching in social skills, Moshe would have picked up the cues that Eli and Meir were set against him “piggy backing” on the back of their scooters. He might then have explored other avenues besides force to gain inclusion. He might have offered to be the “patient” that the “Hatzalah guys” were on their way to help… or to be a policeman who directs traffic or accompanies the Hatzalah members on foot. By being reasonable and flexible, choosing to add something to the game instead of taking over the game, Moshe could have turned the situation around completely. Similarly, had Shifra grasped the extent to which her classmates were put off by her inappropriate behavior, the outcome might have been very different. Instead, she misread their protests and the strength of their objections and persisted in thinking she could drag them along into “having fun” with her. She was devastated when the get-together at her house—a social opportunity she had longed for—disintegrated. And she had no clue about what she had done to precipitate this turn of events. “I used to think she was just immature,” her mother said. “But it’s more than that. It’s like she’s missing out on a certain sixth sense about how to behave that for most people comes naturally.” EARLY INTERVENTION Special education experts are increasingly placing stress on a child’s social competence as a critical developmental process that is every bit as important as scholastic achievement—and perhaps more so. Without intervention—and the earlier the better—they say, children who demonstrate poor social skills may continue to experience problems into middle childhood and beyond that affect all facets of life. One of the most important things parents can do for children with social skills deficits is an obvious and simple one: observe them in interactions with others whenever possible. This will enable you to gain a deeper understanding of their social strengths and weaknesses. In addition, the following steps, advocated by Dr. Richard Lavoie, a widely acclaimed expert in special education, have proven very helpful. --Design an unobtrusive “signal system” with the child to use in social situations. For example, if the child tends to “perseverate” (talking about only one topic of scant interest to the listener) or excessively tease or roughhouse, design a signal (cross your arms, snap your finger) that alerts him to stop. SEIZE THE SUMMER Helping a child overcome a deficit in this area, like any other form of remediation, is a process that takes time. Because summer vacation offers an expanded range of social opportunities that are not available during the more structured winter months, this is an ideal time for social skills coaching. Within the framework of camp, group sports, family outings and neighborhood get-togethers, the particular social skills that are being worked on can constantly be tested “in the field.” In addition, because of the more relaxed pace of dayto-day life, progress is more easily measured and observed. Inasmuch as social skills deficits often accompany learning difficulties, a program that combines the two forms of remediation, implemented over the summer months, can make an enormous difference in your child’s development. Those children whose parents see to it that they capitalize strongly on the summer’s opportunities for emotional and scholastic growth are the lucky ones.

“So what do you think?” Jake asked Eli haltingly during their walk home from school the following day. “Do you want to learn with me to read out loud from the Torah?” “Maybe,” Eli said. He thought of the few bar mitzvahs he’d attended with his family back when they’d been living in Israel up until four years ago. He couldn’t recall the actual bar mitzvah boys. But he knew what reading out loud from the Torah would involve from the shul that he attended with his father on Shabbos. “But, uh, it might be a lot of work.” Jake shrugged. “I know how to read in Hebrew,” he said. “And you read the language better than I do.”

Eli was indeed becoming a friend, and the idea was beginning to fill Jake with a sense of well-being. In fact, that morning when Friedrich Becker had tried calling him a schlaukopf once again, the boy had immediately stopped after seeing the fierce expression in Eli’s eyes. But was Eli the defender also ready to become his study partner? *** Two days later, Eli gave his grudging consent, and so it was that the following Sunday Eli and Jake found themselves walking together to the home of Rabbi Zilberberg — the bar mitzvah teacher Rabbi Marcus had recommended — for lessons. Jake had had to give up an hour of his private German lessons to accommodate Rabbi Zilberberg’s schedule, but he knew that Herr Wein was probably relieved to have only Rachel as a student for that hour. The gap between Jake and his sister’s language skills had become far too pronounced for them to be able to learn together well. On the way to Rabbi Zilberberg’s home, Eli begrudgingly went along with Jake’s request that they speak in German to each other — to make up for his lost lesson. On the way home, however, Eli was too tired from their bar mitzvah lesson for him to talk in the foreign tongue and switched to English instead. “I didn’t think the rabbi would be so young,” Eli told Jake as they left Rabbi Zilberberg’s building. “I thought he’d be at least eighty years old and have a long white beard that sweeps the floor.” “He’s not so young,“ Jake said. “He might not be eighty years old, but he’s definitely over thirty.”

“My parents are over thirty too,” Eli said with a shrug. “That doesn’t make them old. Or know how to teach bar mitzvah boys.” The boys’ discussion was interrupted by a car that Jake suddenly noticed in the street. “Mercedes-Benz,” he remarked. “What?” Eli asked. “Nothing,” Jake muttered. Car-naming was almost a ritual to him, but he felt silly to have been caught in the middle of his habit. “If you say so,” Eli said. The two boys crossed over an intersection and passed by a lengthy row of trees on the outskirts of a park. The trees were all beginning to shed their leaves, evidence that they were entering the autumn season. “I don’t think age has anything to do with what a rabbi knows,” Jake said. “Rabbi Zilberberg knew all about blessings and things that my parents never heard of, and they’re probably about the same age.” “Your parents aren’t religious,” Eli said. “That’s why they’ve never heard of those things.” “And your parents have?” Eli shrugged. “Some of the things. I mean, my parents and I are religious — but sometimes it feels like we might not do everything. Obviously, we keep the big things like Shabbos and kosher — all religious people do — but there are probably a lot of smaller things that we’re missing out on.” Eli’s comment caused Jake’s mind to churn. What types of things are considered big and what types are considered small? he wondered. Eli’s family was more religious than his own, of that he was certain, but he wondered if there was a book that could

Mr. Green had offered to drive the boys home from their lessons, but Jake had turned down the offer after carefully studying a map with the exact route home from Rabbi Zilberberg’s apartment building. He knew he would enjoy the challenge of braving the unfamiliar streets together with a friend and was grateful when his parents and Eli’s agreed with the idea. A flash of blue suddenly caught Jake’s eye. A car was lumbering slowly down the block beside them. “You know,” Eli said, “it’s a good thing Rabbi Zilberberg agreed to teach us in English — with Hebrew for the Torah, of course. No way would I have agreed to this if his lessons were in German.” Jake laughed, but his expression quickly turned sober as he noticed that the blue car — a Mercedes-Benz — was still cruising along beside them. “But don’t you want to know more German?” he asked. “I mean, isn’t your family going to live in Vienna for another few years?” “No,” Eli said. “We’re here temporarily. The original plan was for us to go home to Israel this summer — after our mission Holland — but then we got approval to stay in Vienna temporarily.”

Was it the same Mercedes-Benz that he’d noticed at the beginning of their walk? Probably. But why? Their house was situated a full ten minutes from Rabbi Zilberberg’s. Why would a car follow them the whole time? A chill crept up Jake’s spine. “Let’s walk faster, Eli,” he said. “Our building’s right up there.” It took nearly all of his selfcontrol to refrain from running toward their building instead of calmly proceeding toward it. “Is it that car you’re worried about?” Eli asked, pointing slightly. “The Mercedes-Benz?” Eli nodded. “You also noticed it?”
“Temporarily?” Jake repeated. “Don’t diplomats get sent to foreign countries for at least two years? And why did you need to come to a different country if your mission in Holland was over?”
Eli took a key out of his pocket and unlocked the door to their apartment building. “I noticed the car as soon as we left Rabbi Zilberberg’s house,” he whispered. “I think the driver is the same man who had a gun in his pocket on the day we came back from the Prater together.”

Clocks If you’re like me, you probably have shelves, boxes, and closets full of old books. Although they look nice stacked on a trendy bookshelf, too many books can make a house look cluttered. So how about instead of storing these books in your closets and bedrooms hoarder-style, you create a one-of-a-kind clock using your favorite worn-andtorn novel? For the sake of full disclosure, I’ll admit that I actually used one of my son’s books for this project, and I had no idea that he still wanted it! This clock thus became an appeasement gift for my son, along with a new book. Then I made a second clock for myself in a style that I’d wanted for a long time but couldn’t find in a store anywhere. It’s really a clock too cool for words! Check out the pictures. So let’s get started with your own DIY clock!

Clock 1: Book Clock
Supplies • • • • • • • •
Old hardcover book Clock movement kit X-Acto knife Drill (not completely necessary, but definitely helpful) Glue Scissors Battery for the clock A cookie cutter in the shape you want (Alternatively, you can take a picture of the person whom you want to gift this to and use that!) Paint Embellishments such as glitter, small stones, or number stickers

Step 1 Paint the book. Paint the book in the color(s) of your choice. Make sure the paint dries completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 2 Determine the location of the clock’s movement. Place the clock on the cover of your book and use it to determine where you want it to go. Mark that spot with a dot, being careful that the clock hands do not misalign with the movement.
Step 3 Form a hollow in the center of the book. Trace the large clock movement (where the battery goes) onto one of the book’s pages, making sure that the pointy part is facing upward as you trace. Next, use your X-Acto knife to cut out the book’s pages in that shape, creating a hollow deep enough for the clock movement to fit inside and for the book cover to close on top of it. This step requires time and patience, and may take as long as an hour, depending on the size of the movement. Consider turning on some music to enjoy the process. 62

Step 4 Create a hole in the book’s cover. Puncture a hole through the spot that you marked off in step 2. Be sure the hole in the cover aligns with the pointy part of the clock movement inside the book and allows it to poke through. I needed to use a drill to get a clean hole, but if you don’t have one handy, an X-Acto knife can work. It may take a few tries to get the size of the hole right.
Step 5 Cover the hole with a cut-out shape. Using a cutter or stencil, trace the shape of your choice onto a ripped-out page from the book. Then cut that shape out of the paper, make a small circle in it, and use it to cover the pointy part of the clock movement jutting out of the book cover.
Step 6 Assemble the rest of the clock. Using the pieces provided to you by the clock movement kit, put together the rest of the clock movement, including the hour, minute, and second hands by connecting them to the pointy part of the clock movement jutting out of the cover of the book.
Step 7 Add battery and additional embellishments. Insert the correct battery into the back of the clock movement, shut the book, and add ornaments for numbers and design. (I chose a clean numberless-look for this clock, but dream big and add whatever items suit you in this step.) Display this clock on your mantel, bookshelf, or table! You’ll get a ton of, “What?! You did that yourself?” comments. It’s a pretty cool project!

Clock 2: Round Clock Supplies • • • • • • • • •
Two round wooden boards (one larger, one smaller) Clock movement kit Paint Glue for wood Acrylic paint sealer (I used spray gloss finish) Paintbrush Battery for the clock Drill with a bit for wood Embellisments such as glitter, small stones, or number stickers
Step 1 Paint the boards. Paint the boards in the color and style of your choice. I chose to paint a specific picture, but you can paint with solid colors, or sponge paint the boards in the style of your choice. As usual, I want you to make this project your own, so use whatever colors and style works for you. Bear in mind the room that this will hang in, and choose colors that complement it. Or print a picture of your family members (or anyone), and glue the picture to the wooden board instead of painting it. Make sure the boards have dried completely before moving on to step 2.
Step 2 Glue the boards together. Glue the smaller board onto the center of the larger board, and wait for the glue to dry completely before moving on to step 3.

Step 3 Varnish. Brush or spray acrylic paint sealer or varnish over the boards to protect the paint on them.

California sea lions are one of five species of sea lions. Despite their name, they aren’t native solely to California. Their natural habitat ranges from Alaska down to central Mexico. Since sea lions need air, they regularly come out of the sea to breathe. They emerge from the water en masse, lying on various surfaces at the port. They are very intelligent, easily trained, and popular in zoos, aquariums, and circuses over the world.

It uses its flippers and flexible body-which can be bent to form a complete circle!-to swim in various directions and escape its enemies. When it moves on dry land, it uses its 4 flippers like feet to get around. In the hot summer months, during which pups are born, the mothers stay with the pups on dry land for 10 days. After that, she goes into the sea for 3 days to forage for food, and then comes back out to give her children to eat. When she returns, the mother calls to her pup, and the pup responds in turn. After a year, the pup is independent, but can remain with its mother for another year. Huge groups of sea lions-numbering hundreds or thousandslounge on shore, warming themselves beneath the sun. They lie not only on sand and rocks, but also on fishing apparatus and marine structures, intruding upon fishing and other port activities (see two lower photos).

They eat a large variety of sea creatures, but mostly fish, including salmon and herring. California sea lions can dive almost 1,000 ft. deep and remain there for an average of 10 minutes. Most of the time, however, they dive only 250 ft. deep and remain there for 3 minutes. Killer whales and sharks prey upon sea lions. As experts in their role as predators, killer whales daringly swim next to shore in hope of seizing a victim (see three photos lower left). Of high intelligence, the sea lion can be trained in many areas, including sign language; it can react to signaled commands. In zoos, aquariums and circuses all over the world the sea lion performs by holding a ball on its nose, climbing a ladder, jumping through hoops, standing while holding objects, and so on. The American military trains sea lions to perform daring, underwater, military operations against enemy ships (see small photo at left).

One day I arrived at school and realized that I had left my literature book at home. My teacher told me the day before to make sure to bring my literature book back the next day because we use it a lot. I was very nervous because I really didn't want to get a late note (that's what it's called when we're missing a book). I looked around the class and realized that a girl in my class hadn't come yet, so I took her book. After my teacher walked in, I realized that another girl in my class left early. I was very upset that I didn't take that girl's book, because I thought she probably wouldn't be coming back. I was scared that maybe the girl whose book I took would come late and then since I would give her back her book, I would have to get a late note, since I wouldn't have a book. Turns out, the girl who got picked up came back to school and the girl who was absent didn't come. Hashem put it in my head to take one girl's book and not a different girl's book and it all worked out perfectly. Thank You, Hashem!

One day my father noticed he was missing 400 dollars he had on him. We searched all around the house, but to no avail. It seemed as if the money simply picked itself up and walked off. A couple of weeks later, my mother wanted to go shopping, so my father came to pick her up. My mother brought out supper for my father to eat in the car, but as my mother stepped into the car, the plate slipped off her hands, and went toppling down, leaving mashed potatoes and chicken all over the car! As my mother was cleaning through the seats, out came out a 100-dollar bill! And another one, and another one, and another one! Hashem simply pushed the plate off my mothers’ hands, to be able to find the money.

Lemon Biscotti These biscotti make for a light and zesty dessert. It’s the ideal sweet ending to a heavy Shabbos meal, or a delightful treat during the week. With a perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess, these biscotti bring a refreshing taste to any dessert table. Ingredients 1 cup
oil
4
eggs
1
cup sugar zest of 1 lemon
2 TBSP
lemon juice
1 ½ tsp
vanilla extract
Instructions 1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the oil, eggs, and sugar until smooth and creamy.
3. Mix in the lemon zest, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. 4. Gradually fold in the flour, making sure that there are no lumps 5. Gently stir in the poppy seeds, ensuring that they’re evenly distributed through the dough.

6. After the dough has come together, divide it into two equal portions.

Lemon Glaze Instructions 1. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the confectioner’s sugar with the lemon juice, ensuring there are no lumps. 2. Slowly add in the water, one teaspoon at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency. A thicker consistency works well for drizzling, while a thinner consistency works well for dipping or spreading.
3. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled biscotti, or dip each slice into the mixture. 4. Allow the glaze to set on the biscotti before storing. This usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour. Store the cooled biscotti in an airtight container. 106

Veggie Lo Mein is a versatile and tasty dinner option. It makes for a great side dish — or a main if you throw in your favorite protein! It’s an easy and flexible recipe, making it a fantastic go-to for any day of the week. Ingredients For the Veggie Lo Mein 1 package Spaghetti noodles 1 large Onion, thinly sliced 1 large Red pepper, thinly sliced 1 cup Broccoli florets 1 cup Carrots, thinly sliced Salt, to taste Pepper, to taste 2 cloves Garlic, minced 1 TBSP Sesame seeds (for garnish) For the Sauce 2 TBSP 1 TBSP 2 TBSP ¼ cup 1 TBSP 1 TBSP
Honey Lemon juice Brown sugar Soy sauce Sesame oil Cornstarch diluted in 2 TBSP water
Instructions 1. Cook the spaghetti noodles according to the package instructions or until al dente. Drain and set aside. 2. In a bowl, whisk together the honey, lemon juice, brown sugar, soy sauce, and sesame oil for the sauce. Then stir in the diluted cornstarch, and mix until smooth. Set aside. 3. Heat some oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions, and sauté until translucent. Add the garlic and stir until fragrant. 4. Incorporate the sliced red peppers, broccoli florets, and carrots, stirring the mixture occasionally. Continue to sauté until the veggies are tender yet still have a crunch (about 3–5 minutes). 5. Add salt and pepper to the vegetables to taste. 6. Pour the sauce into the skillet with the veggies and allow to simmer for 1–2 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly. 7. Add the cooked spaghetti noodles to the skillet, tossing everything together until the noodles and veggies are well coated and heated through. Serve the veggie lo mein in bowls garnished with sesame seeds. Enjoy! Note: Integrate cooked salmon, tofu, or chicken to this dish after the lo mein is ready so that it transitions from a delightful side to a filling main dish. 108

1 1/2 cups Almond Flour
1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF (177ºC). Line a baking pan with parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, add the almond flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, sea salt and baking soda. Whisk together to combine. 3. In a separate medium sized bowl add the eggs, maple syrup, coconut oil and vanilla. Whisk together. Then add the carrots, walnut and orange zest and whisk again. Add the wet ingredients to the dry 4. ingredients and stir to combine. Pour into your prepared pan and bake for 25 to 27 minutes. 5. Remove from the oven and let them cool before slicing evenly into bars. Enjoy!

Broccoli Chicken & Rice Casserole Ingredients
Directions
1 cup Jasmine Rice (dry, rinsed & checked) 12 ozs Chicken Breast (boneless, skinless, cubed) 2 cups Broccoli (chopped into florets) 1/2 Yellow Onion (medium, sliced) 2 1/2 cups Chicken Broth 2 tbsps Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1/2 Lemon (juiced) 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder 1 tbsp Parsley (chopped)
1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF (175ºC). Grease a casserole dish. 2. Add the rice, chicken, broccoli, and onion to the casserole dish, spreading everything out evenly. 3. Mix the broth, oil, lemon juice, and garlic powder. Pour it over everything in the casserole dish evenly. Use a spoon to mix the broth in to ensure everything is wellcoated in liquid. 4. Bake, uncovered, for 30 to 35 minutes or until the rice and chicken are cooked and the broccoli has some browned edges. Garnish with parsley and enjoy! 5.

Now, we're taking it up a notch and making it even more exhilarating. Our new goal is to encourage entire classes to participate each week.
Here's How it Works: Class Representatives: Designate one person from your class to be the official representative. This representative will sign up the entire class to participate in the contest. Individual Submissions: Every individual participant must continue sending in their weekly submissions as they have been doing. Monthly Raffle: To add to the excitement, we will introduce a new monthly raffle. Every participant who submits their entries during the month will have a chance to win $100 cash prize.
