Noach Nifla’os HaBorei “For Mine is every beast of the forest… I know every bird of the mountains, and what creeps upon the fields is with Me.” (Tehillim 50:10–11) I always feel more spiritually uplifted at the zoo than I do at the Kosel. Sounds sacrilegious, I know. But there are specific blessings you make at the zoo (when you see monkeys or elephants) that you don’t make at the Kosel. At the zoo, six days of creation are spread out before you. And much of Hashem’s biological and chemical engineering genius, and sense of humor, are displayed in the miniature biosphere. Noach had a zoo that has never been replicated since. There isn’t a zoo in existence that contains every single type of insect, bird, reptile, and mammal. I know, I’ve been to many. We get some of the laws regarding tza’ar baalei chayim from Parashas Noach: If you have a pet or a working animal, they have to be fed before you. You’re not allowed to eat a limb off a live animal. All animals, even the teeniest tiniest, must be preserved and not tormented. Man’s first job was guarding and maintaining the world. And since then, many of Hashem’s mitzvos make us His partner in safeguarding creation. From kosher shechitah and redeeming donkeys to not stepping on ants or causing other kinds of distress to animals, we have a lot of consideration for our fellow creatures. But is there more that

we can do? The Midrash suggests that an entire society might be receiving rain, sustenance, etc., in the merit of the animals (Tanchuma, Emor 6). Humans might sin to the extent that they do not deserve such blessings, yet Hashem continues to bestow kindness upon them in the merit of the animals, which have committed no sins. Since our food might be in the merit of our animals, it’s only fair that they be fed first. The aforementioned halachah about not eating the limb off a live animal is one of the seven mitzvos given to the Bnei Noach, a whopping 14 percent of the commandments given to non-Jews. Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi (Rav) was once walking to the beis midrash when a calf, which was being led to shechitah, broke loose and came up to him, appearing to plead with him to save it from death. Rav said to the calf, “Go to your fate, for to this end you were created.” At this, a bas kol proclaimed that, as Rav had not had pity on one of G d’s creatures, he should be punished with physical suffering. For thirteen years Rav suffered, and then one day he was healed. A maidservant in his house was cleaning a room when she found some newborn weasels. She wanted to put them out of the house, but Rav restrained her. “Hashem has pity on all His creatures,” he said, “and human beings must follow His example. Leave the baby weasels in the

house.” A bas kol at once proclaimed that just as Rav had had pity on Hashem’s lowly creatures, so should pity be taken on him. He was immediately cured. Throughout Jewish history, stories abound about how animals benefit us — as food, transportation, spiritual aids — with dogs and birds featuring prominently in these stories. And today, many service animals help the blind, as well as the physically and emotionally challenged. Additionally, animals work as part of rescue teams to locate and rescue people lost in forests and on mountains, saving many lives. There is also a plethora of stories about people who have returned as gilgulim in animals. So there are many reasons for taking care of animals, among them gratitude and compassion. Of course, that it is so predicated in the Torah should be our first and foremost reason.

Many people study the laws of animal sacrifices, but we don’t study enough about the miracles and complexities of the animal kingdom. And they are amazing and can give us a tremendous appreciation for our Creator! As of 2022, 2.16 million living animal species have been listed — of which around 1.05 million are insects, over 85,000 are mollusks, and around 65,000 are vertebrates — but it has been estimated that there are around 7.77 million animal species in total. That’s about two animal species for every Jew Learning about the fascinating details of animals by going to the zoo or taking out books is important. It teaches us the greatness of Hashem and the importance of preserving His world.

Other nations protest and try to ban kosher slaughter out of compassion, but, ironically, millennia previously, we Jews are the ones who introduced animal-rights legislation by adhering to the laws of shechitah, which guarantee the most painless demise of our future main course.

There’s little we can do about poaching in Africa or about people in the Far East eating anything that moves, but we can become more aware of the threats to Hashem’s animals. We can even pray for their welfare the way we pray for rain and crops. Saying Perek Shirah emphasizes how all of Hashem’s creation, and every animal in its own way, says shirah to Hashem.

Of course, keeping kosher is ensuring that many animals continue to thrive. Many animals would not be vulnerable or endangered if everyone kept kosher.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, as of March 2019 there are 7,510 endangered or critically endangered animal species globally.

I’m not suggesting that people take from the maaser they give kollelim or bikur cholim organizations and transfer it to saving giant pandas, but I do feel that endangered animals should be on our radar.

How do our children treat animals? How do we treat them?

And, of course, children must be taught to be kind to animals — no stepping on ants, no throwing rocks at cats, no taking animals out of their natural habitats to see what will happen. “Even things that you may regard as completely superfluous to the creation of the world, such as fleas, gnats, and flies, even they are included in the creation of the world, and the Holy One carries out the Divine purpose through everything — even a snake, a scorpion, a gnat, or a frog”

(Midrash Rabbah, Bereishis 10:7).

There are efforts we can make that are easy enough – planting trees, recycling, slowing down when driving in areas where animals abound, etc. Let’s take those efforts seriously. Taking our kids to zoos and animal parks so that they can see the animals firsthand will also give them more appreciation for these amazing wonders. Six millennia later, we are still entrusted with the job of guarding Hashem’s garden. And it’s a job I respectfully suggest we all take seriously. It is, after all, our world we are protecting, and the many creatures, great and small, that help us.

Rabbi Yehudah ben Betzalel Lowe The Maharal of Prague (1512–1609)

Shira Yael Klein Over four hundred years ago, in the city of Prague, Czechoslovakia, lived Rav Yehudah Lowe, the Maharal of Prague. The king of Czechoslovakia at the time was wise and honest. His wife, however, hated Jews with every fiber of her being. She often conspired with anti-Semitic priests in the area to convince her husband to pass decrees against the Jews. Usually, the king firmly withstood her attempts.

It took the king several moments to clear his mind and realize that he’d just experienced a nightmare. He smiled upon realizing that, but his smile disappeared when he saw that the table in his room had two very real bowls on it. One contained his hair, and the other contained his fingernail clippings.

But it happened once that the queen pestered her husband so much that he didn’t have the energy to fight with her. “Write whatever you want on the royal parchment,” he told her in his desire to end their late-night argument. “I’ll look it over in the morning.” The tired king fell fast asleep after that, and the satisfied queen raced to the royal scribe. Together, they quickly drew up a decree to exile the Jews from their homes and confiscate their property. The queen carefully placed the document under the king’s pillow so that the information wouldn’t leak to the Jews, who would certainly try to overturn the decree if they found out about it. That night, the king dreamed that he was fighting a war against a neighboring country that Czechoslovakia was in a state of tension with. The tide of the battle turned so that soon the enemy had the upper hand. They captured the king and imprisoned him in a locked cell at the top of a well-fortified tower. There the king was forced to subsist 24

helping him bathe, cutting his hair, and trimming his nails. Then, the Maharal enabled the king to slip back into his private room at the palace via a secret passage. The Maharal placed the king’s trimmed hair in one bowl and his fingernail clippings in another bowl. Before the king could ask him, “Why did you do that?” he suddenly awoke.

It was in the fourteenth year of the king’s imprisonment that the wife of the Maharal of Prague traveled to the enemy country to take care of something there. Walking past the building that the king was imprisoned in, she saw a warden open the king’s cell to give him his measly meal. The king, noticing her, managed to relay instructions to her on how to help him escape. She followed those instructions, and the king indeed managed escape. At long last! After the king’s escape, the Maharal’s wife brought him home to hide him until things tided over. The Maharal, upon catching a glimpse of the king, was shocked at his appearance. The royal figure was a ghost of his former self and appeared completely malnourished, sick, and unkempt. The Maharal tended to the king,

He immediately ordered his servants to summon the Maharal, and when the Maharal arrived, the king told him about his dream and showed him the two bowls. “May G-d protect the king!” the Maharal said, looking into the king’s eyes. “But perhaps the king slept on top of something evil, which led him to have this bad dream?” Rummaging under his pillow, the king quickly found the anti-Semitic decree that his queen had written. The shocked king hurried to tell the Maharal what had transpired. In the Maggid of Kozhnitz’s town lived a butcher named Isaac, who didn’t have the greatest reputation. He passed away at a relatively young age. A few weeks after his passing, Isaac came to the shochet of the town in a dream and told him, “I’m summoning you to appear before the Beis Din shel Ma’alah!”

The next day, the shochet went to the Maggid. The Maggid ordered that a wooden board be brought and used to wall off a corner of his house. Then he told his shamash to go to the cemetery where Isaac was buried, and summon

Hearing this, the shochet turned white. “Everything that Isaac said is true,” he told the Maggid, adding, “please, give me whatever punishment you think is fitting. I’ll do as you command.” “You must pay off all of Isaac’s debts,” the Maggid said. “Furthermore, you must support Isaac’s wife and children.”

The shochet woke up in the morning surprised, but didn’t pay attention to the dream.

“Torah lo baShamayim hi — the Torah is not in Shamayim,” the Maggid told him “There are batei din in This World. Tell Isaac that if he wants to take you to beis din, he should come to me together with you to be judged — and if he doesn’t agree, in the end he’ll regret it!”

Y’know, folks — all you folks out there reading this chronicle of what happened to the guy next door — I’ve just discovered the problem with writing in the first person: I’m telling the story from my point of view only. But when something momentous happens, like Avi going next door to meet Xavier for the first time, I can’t be a fly on the wall and tell you folks what happened. Because I wasn’t there. I have to wait for Avi to return and tell me his version of events, and who knows if those are even accurate? What can I do about that? Nothing. I have to assume he’s telling me what happened

as it happened. After all, he’s a yeshivah boy now, and supposedly of a higher level of honesty than when he was a recalcitrant teenager. I didn’t actually pace up and down anxiously while Avi was next door, like a father-to-be awaiting a new baby. But for all the office work I managed to get done during the time, I might as well have been. Pacing, I mean. I was so antsy. He was probably only gone about fifteen, twenty minutes, but I’ve never known time to pass so slowly. Except maybe the last few minutes of Tishah B’Av.

Then Avi came back in, looking thoughtful. Pensive. (If there’s a difference.) I practically jumped on him. “Well? What did you think?” “Mum,” he called out, totally blanking me out, “I’m ready for that food now, please!” And he walked past me into the kitchen, leaving me standing there like an idiot. Well, not like an idiot. I wasn’t going to put up with this. I followed him into the kitchen. “No son of mine,” and all that jazz really meant nothing when push came to shove. Avi was twenty-two. Old enough to drive, old enough to vote, old enough to drink, old enough to get married, and old enough to ignore his old man if it suited him. Debbie was putting a plate of food in front of him — freshly cooked corned beef and roast potatoes; nothing fancy, but he fell on it like he hadn’t eaten for a week. Or a zeman. Whatever had happened next door didn’t seem to have affected Avi’s appetite. Did anything affect a young bachur’s appetite? He grinned up at his mother between mouthfuls and said, “I was praying you wouldn’t give me chicken and rice. We get that almost every day in yeshivah, and even if yours is vastly superior, I couldn’t have stomached yet another meal of chicken and rice.”

“I know that,” Debbie said smugly. “I’ve fed you and your friends over Shabbos before, and I’ve noticed which food you go for and which you turn your noses up at.” “Not exactly turn our noses up at,” Avi protested through another mouthful of corned beef, “but…well, yeah, I guess, turn our noses up kind of describes it. Sorry, Mum.” Speaking of noses, he then took a nosedive into his plate of food. I stood there for a while, trying not to watch him eat, as I hate it when people do that to me. But I couldn’t believe he wasn’t going to tell me what happened next door. My Avi, who told me everything, had suddenly clammed up and wouldn’t meet my gaze. After a while, I couldn’t hold myself back any longer. “AVI!!” I asked him politely. (Well, it was more of a yell than a polite request.) He glanced up. “Dad, I noticed a house on the next street is for sale. I saw it on my way home from the tube station. I think you could get a good price on this house, and you don’t need such a big house anyway.” I gawped at him, open-mouthed. My son, who often told me to never, ever consider moving house, he loved this house, it was the house he’d grown up in, and he wouldn’t even countenance the thought of selling and downsizing — my son had just said this. He saw my expression and looked away. “I

have to bentsh,” he said. I looked at Debbie, she looked at me, and I saw a warning in her eyes. Don’t push this, the warning said. Let him come to it in his own way. I knew that look. It brooked no argument, no discussion. And so I stepped back, out of his life, temporarily. Frustrated? Yes. Furious? Also. But helpless too, knowing there was nothing I could realistically do about what was happening. I shot another look at Debbie, who was busy cleaning up her beloved son’s meal debris and didn’t meet my gaze. Mentally I shrugged, wondering what to do next. Then events were taken out of my hands. The front door flung open, and another tornado swept in, a female one this time. Our daughter Rikki was home from seminary in Gateshead. “Hi!!!” she shrieked. “I’m home!!!” I knew she wouldn’t bring any girls with her if she knew Avi was also home. It wouldn’t be appropriate, and he didn’t come home for every bein hazemanim, so there would be plenty other occasions for her to bring home any “lost girls” — girls who lived in South America or Australia, and for whom it was too expensive to constantly fly home every vacation. (Of which seminaries had more than yeshivos.) Between you and me, I was glad it was just Rikki. Having one-on-one father-

daughter time was awkward and difficult with another girl hanging around. I usually had to pick my times carefully, and this involved hours after midnight, when the other girl had gone to bed, and Rikki and I had alone time at last. As a man fast approaching his dotage (well, I was in my forties…), too many late nights were a bit of a problem. Rikki was — shall I say without fear or favor or bragging — gorgeous. I don’t know how Debbie and I managed it. To produce two such stunning-looking children was quite a feat. Avi had almost matinee-idol good looks, and Rikki was just…leading lady gorgeous. She barreled into the kitchen and flung herself at her mother, who returned the embrace with alacrity. “MUMMYYY!!” Rikki enthused, squeezing her mother and rocking her from side to side. “I’ve missed you soooo much!!!!” Then she turned to me. “DADDYYYY!” I got a toned-down version of her mother’s hug and was happy enough to have gotten anything. “Okay,” she said, once she’d bashed her brother companionably on the back in lieu of a greeting. “What’s going on next door?” The air froze. “Ask Avi,” I said. I couldn’t help myself. Avi didn’t look at me. “Where are the Bernsteins? Schindler Square, I hear?” she pressed.

And I don’t think he likes Jews.” I gawped. How had Rikki gotten him to open the floodgates when she hadn’t even tried very hard? I wanted to say: “What makes you think that?” but with my Information Gatherer in Chief now on the job, I decided to keep my mouth shut and let her continue with her use of invisible thumbscrews. “That’s ridiculous, Avi,” Rikki said, plonking herself at the kitchen table next to her brother. “This street is almost all Jewish, except for Mr. Nakamura two doors down. I can throw it, yes?” “No, no!” I cried out, seizing the precious mezuzah. Then I saw the back was off. And the case was empty. “Where’s what was inside it?” I asked, looking at it as if the tiny scroll of parchment was hidden inside somewhere. “Oh, you mean the instructions?” Xavier asked. “I threw those away. SOS DIFFERENT KINDS OF SMARTS Most people know what an IQ is, but what about an EQ? Let’s start with the easy one. IQ stands for “intelligence quotient” and was first introduced by French psychologist Alfred Binet. At an early age, an educator or learning specialist administers an IQ test and that child is then assigned an IQ, a number that supposedly represents their intelligence. According to the test, IQs are fixed and innate at birth. Alternatively, in the early 1990s, Daniel Goleman of The New York Times introduced the idea of emotional intelligence or EQ. Unlike the IQ, emotional intelligence is not fixed from birth and individuals can raise their EQ through intervention and education. But, what exactly is emotional intelligence? In his book, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More than IQ, Goleman explains his conception of emotional intelligence: Abilities such as being able to motivate oneself and persist in the face of frustrations; to control impulse and delay gratification; to regulate one’s moods and keep distress from swamping the ability to think; to empathize and to hope… And while there are those who argue that IQ cannot be changed much by experience or education, I will show that the crucial emotional competencies can indeed be learned and improved upon by children – if we bother to teach them.

So, why bring up the concept of emotional intelligence when discussing shidduchim? The answer is simple: if a young adult has a low EQ, no matter how smart or accomplished she is, she will never be able to show that to her prospective mate. Therefore, it is essential to help the young adults in our community develop their emotional intelligence. After all, without it, their IQ is irrelevant.

INCREASE YOUR EQ Nonverbal communication An incredibly large part of increasing your emotional intelligence stands in being able to properly utilize and understand nonverbal communication. Estee Stimler, in her book, The Frum Rules: The Fun, User-Friendly, Definitive Girl’s Guide to Shidduchim, lists Rule #12 as “Be a Good Listener.” This rule is true for both males and females when going out. So, how can you train yourself to be a good listener? In order to determine whether you are a good listener, Stimler suggests a test, “the next time someone talks to you, are you really listening with your entire brain, or are you preparing what you want to say next while they are speaking?” Listening attentively to another person requires eye contact that lets the person know that you are interested in what they are saying. Aside from eye contact, there are many subtle messages that people send through

SOS non-verbal communication. Here are some ways to make sure you are sending the right messages. Of course, avoid restlessness: Restlessness can be tapping your foot incessantly, moving around silverware, or checking your watch multiple times. Restlessness indicates that you are not interested in what the person in front of you is saying. Therefore, when a young woman fiddles with her napkin, the young man with her might think that he was boring her and consequently might have stopped talking. Next, Steer clear of closed-in body posture: Crossing your arms, turning your body on an angle away from the person you are speaking to, or leaning away from the table are all signals that you are not comfortable in the situation. Instead, face the other person directly and keep your posture relaxed and at ease. Another good way to indicate your interest is to not people-watch: Instead of watching everybody else in the lobby of the hotel, stay focused on the person you are there with. Aside from leading to lashon hara, people-watching is distracting and again indicates a lack of interest in your date. Lastly, there is nothing like a smile to show others you are kind and personable. While smiling seems like a no-brainer when trying to communicate in a positive way,

many people forget to smile when they are nervous and in new situations. Ironically, research in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that smiling can actually make you less anxious. When you use the muscles in your face to smile, those muscles trigger hormones in your brain that make you more relaxed and happy. For many of us, non-verbal communication is something we pick up on from a young age and continue to develop as we grow. For others, distinguishing the non-verbal cues of others is quite difficult. For this reason, Dr. Jeanne Segal explains in her book The Language of Emotional Intelligence that it is very important to use perfect non-verbal skills in order to ease conflict and stress.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS: Remain relaxed and focused in tense and intense situations: If you don’t know how to stay centered and in control of yourself, you may become emotionally overwhelmed in challenging situations. Therefore, you might give off the wrong impression. Read nonverbal cues: Evaluate the person you are speaking to in terms of eye contact, facial expression, tone of voice, posture, intensity, timing, and pace. Modify your own behavior in accordance with how you want them to react.

You can avoid many confrontations and resolve differences by using humor and a playful attitude. Smiling and laughing signal to those around you that you are interested in harmony rather than discord.

There are a few ways of talking back to your inner critic to make the voice quieter and therefore improve your self-esteem:

Remember, you can learn from the words and silences of those around you. SELF-ESTEEM Another important element of raising your EQ involves self-awareness and a positive self-concept. In other words, you need to gain self-esteem. Psychologist Eugene Sagan asserts that everyone has a critical inner voice. This voice criticizes, judges, and attacks you when you do something you consider wrong. Everyone has a critical inner voice, but people with low self-esteem have a more vocal and vicious inner critic. This critic compares you to others and their achievements – and finds you lacking. The critic sets impossible standards of perfection and then beats you up when you make mistakes. And, this critic continually reminds you of all of your petty failures in the past, making you believe that you truly are a failure. The inner critic is more toxic than any other person’s criticism in your life because it is always with you – judging, blaming, finding fault.

Choose a mantra: Come up with a line that you say to yourself every time you hear your inner critic begin to speak. You can say: “Get off my back,” “Stop,” or any other line that will effectively subvert the inner critic’s method. If you repeat the mantra whenever you hear the critic’s voice, the attacks will greatly diminish. Asking the price: Figure out what listening to your inner critic has cost you. Perhaps you have not tried to lose weight or not applied for a position that would have been perfect for you. When you hear the critic’s voice, respond by saying, “I can’t afford this, you’ve cost me…” Aff irmation of worth: This is the hardest form of defense against your inner critic – but is perhaps the most effective. Think about all of the elements of yourself that you like. If you can’t come up with a comprehensive list, use a simple affirmation such as, “ Why do I hurt myself? I am trying my best.” Respond to your critic by stating your positive affirmation. Thereby, rebuilding your sense of worth.

Breaking Plates without Spilling Secrets

The Apiryon Shidduchim Initiative “You’re the first person I have ever told,” the father of the bachur confided, between tears. “Even my brothers and sisters don’t know. They keep on suggesting shidduchim for our metzuyan son and we keep on turning them down. People are even offering apartments. But there’s no way we could say yes, without telling everyone about the machalah and the treatments… and we just can’t. The years are passing and they all think my son is a snob — that no one is good enough for him.” But the Apiryon advisor on the other end of the line knew the real story, and he was prepared to help them find their son’s zivug, without compromising their dignity, divulging their secrets, or even knowing their name. RMZ473*. Three capital English letters followed by three digits. That was the code the Apiryon computer system had issued to the family. A code that connects to the shidduch information and medical information the family had chosen to submit — all without any mention of their name. (It’s enough to leave the name and contact information of your rav, a different trusted person, or even an anonymous phone number or an email address that you open especially for this purpose.) Putting a Premium on Privacy As a caring community, we often discuss solutions to the shidduch crisis. Yet for some singles the crisis is actually two-fold. It might be a genetic condition, a physical illness, a mental health struggle. There might be a complicated home situation such as divorce, or a matter of family background such as for baalei teshuvah and their grown children. Or perhaps it’s a matter of age or weight. Whatever the issue, all these singles have an additional obstacle preventing them from finding their match: they don’t want to tell the world. They don’t want every yenta and her neighbor discussing what they went through and oy, isn’t that hard, and oh, I hope they find the right one eventually. They want discreet help and they want many options without needing to tell their story to many people — not even to the various well-meaning shadchanim who specialize in more challenging shidduchim. This is where the Apiryon Shidduchim Initiative comes in. It is an entirely anonymous and secure, Israel-based international shidduchim database that, with the assistance of skilled and sensitive advisors from a range of communities, collects and suggests many possible matches for these singles. It is an unprecedented system that benefits from the guidance and direct, on-going supervision of the Amshinover Rebbe shlita and is run with kavod and with tznius. It is intended to help every Orthodox Jew who is struggling to find their zivug for any reason whatsoever. Five months ago Apiryon ran exactly one article in the Hebrew papers. From that piece and word of mouth alone they already have approximately 1,000 singles in their system. Chassidish. Litvish. Sephardic. Every day their staff fields 150 calls in Hebrew and Yiddish, of which 10-15 come from new singles who want to join. Now the Rebbe has instructed Apiryon to take the next step by inviting the English-speaking community to sign up. Now English speakers can be a part of this revolutionary shidduchim system. Apiryon’s six secretaries, ten shidduchim advisors, and its medical advisor are all truly eager to help your family. Who signs a single up for Apiryon? Ninety percent of the time a member of the family is in touch with one of the secretaries, however, shadchanim who specialize in complex matchmatching also contribute profiles. Once a suggestion progresses, the submitting shadchan can serve as the representative of the single

they registered, and an Apiryon advisor will represent the other side. The shadchanus gelt will be split, but the joy will be complete. If the information for both sides was submitted by the families then an Apiryon advisor will orchestrate the entire process, unless the family prefers an outside shadchan. The Most Sensitive Suggestions Privacy issues aside, at times conventionally-generated shidduch suggestions can be downright offensive. Ever call a shadchan and get off the phone wondering: Is that what they think of me? What kind of an idea is that? (Join the club…) As one of Apiryon’s advisors put it: “In shidduchim, it’s so easy to hurt people’s feelings. I can suggest a match that seems relevant yet the family will be insulted because they see things differently. But when the computer suggests it there is no one to be upset at. Even just filling out our detailed questionnaire helps the families get their bearings as to where they are on the shidduchim map.” The Director of Apiryon elaborates: “Our system eliminates those hurt feelings because the suggestions are generated by the computer, based on the parameters that you yourself set. The twopage registration form begins with the basics such as languages, mentality, and community and moves on to questions pertaining to lifestyle, socio-economic status, education, dress, and the ability to perform tasks of everyday living. The second page is where the applicant checks off which type of person they will consider. Is the girl willing to wear a tichel? Is she insisting on someone from her own community? Is the boy willing to consider someone older than him? Is he insisting on yichus? The more flexible the applicant, the more codes, aka shidduch suggestions, the computer will put on that person’s list.” One young woman, in addition to her health issue, had an unusual request: She would only consider young men with the name Yaakov. Umm… okay. But that’s why the computer only found one possible match. In such a case, a diplomatic Apiryon advisor will encourage the applicant to pull back on her demand. On the flip side, one man in his mid-30’s marked down that he was open to ages 18-40. His list of suggestions filled the entire screen. He might do well to refine his search parameters as well. The Signature Apiryon Process Once a single has a list of computer-generated suggestions, an Apiryon advisor will begin the process of sharing redacted information between both sides of one such suggestion, to see if there is general interest and to confirm that they are medically compatible. At that point the traffic light icon next to each of their codes will be green (active/available). Depending on the issues at hand, it can take a month for both sides to review the medical documents and anonymously confer with the other side’s doctor. If that aligns then the advisor will ask for first names and confirm that the given name of the girl does not match the name of the boy’s mother, and the same for the boy and the girl’s father. Once those boxes have been checked the couple reach ‘Yes, they can meet’ status. And the light turns yellow…

‫בס"ד‬ Since the program’s inception, Apiryon’s devoted volunteer shidduchim advisors have worked on 128 suggestions, and every suggestion is significant. “Just having very relevant options to consider touches these families so deeply,” relates another of their seasoned advisors. “The other day a father told me: ‘I don’t know how to thank you. We’ve been waiting years for the phone to ring.’” The Mazel Tovs Begin… From morning to night, calls are being made from Apiryon’s Beitar Illit headquarters to interested singles worldwide. And yesterday the first two Apiryon traffic lights turned red. Mazel tov! A very special couple just got engaged. Mrs. Rivkah Leah Weisman** of Yerushalayim had the zechus to bring that inaugural shidduch to fruition. For her, it was the closing of a circle. A year and a half ago a mother came to her, crying. Her daughter was 23, they had a complicated family situation, and their phone hadn’t rung in a year. That conversation gave Rivkah Leah the inspiration to begin redting shidduchim for her and for other struggling singles. She found herself promising that mother: “I will do everything I can so your daughter gets engaged.” But, despite her tremendous efforts, Rivkah Leah wasn’t getting anywhere, until she submitted the girl’s details to Apiryon. “I called and left a message on their machine. Me and how many others? But no, they called me back in less than an hour. The system is so efficient. And when they didn’t reach me, they called again and again until they did.

“You cannot imagine how deeply these people care,” she continues. “Even once the suggestion had been made and I was working on it, Apiryon called me regularly to check in and to see if they could help things progress. The system offers extremely intelligent suggestions that are very, very shayach. Enchanted, astounded. I don’t have words to describe how remarkable this is. My information as an individual shadchan is so limited, but the moment you have access to such an incomparable resource you increase the chances for any single with a challenge. Even filling out their form is mind-expanding. It really gets people thinking about where they can flex. Maybe Erloi would take Pinsk. Maybe a girl who wants a Litvish bachur could build a beautiful life with a chassidish one.” This week that mother called Mrs. Weisman back and she was choking on her tears again. But this time they were tears of joy. “’This is the happiest day of my life,” the kallah’s mother finally got out. “’We received so much more than I ever dreamed of.’” And, adds Rivkah Leah, “It would not have happened without Apiryon.” Soon all of that happy couple’s confidential information will be removed from the Apiryon system. If you lose a document from your doctor, don’t expect to find it on file here. Once a person’s shidduch has been found, all their data is erased. Because Apiryon is here to help every single find their zivug and build the Jewish home they have been dreaming of, with dignity and discretion. May the next mazel tov be yours.

Ten Steps to Finding Your Zivug 1. Send an email to: office.apiryon@gmail.com or call 516.874.6161 during the afternoon hours from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm EST (when it’s 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm in Eretz Yisrael). You will receive an initial signup form to fill out, or a link to one. 2. The system generates a code for you, and you receive a more detailed registration form. (The form must be filled out and returned within 48 hours.) 3 . The system generates shidduch suggestions based on the data you submitted and then those suggestions are sent to our shidduch evaluation department. 4. The head of the department reviews the options and sends the most relevant one to an Apiryon advisor to facilitate. 5. The advisor calls both sides to request additional information — all without knowing their names. 6. In the case of singles with health issues: Once the necessary information has been collected and all the details indicate an appropriate match, an anonymous conference call is held between Apiryon’s doctor and a representative from each side. If necessary, further clarifications will be made. 7. After all the clarifications that can be made without disclosing their identities have been made, then, with the consent of both sides, the names of the singles are made known to one another. From here on, the shidduch progresses like any typical shidduch. 8. The shidduch can be facilitated by an Apiryon advisor or by an outside shadchan agreed upon by the two sides. 9. Mazel tov! 10. The system deletes the names of the couple, along with all of their information.

Yawning, Eli tried to plan his day. Unpacking boxes and tossing their contents around had been fun, but how was he going to spend each morning and afternoon, with school still two weeks off… Dressing slowly in gray slacks and a green T-shirt, Eli’s thoughts turned to Jake. Should he go over to the Greens again and try to spend the day in the boy’s company? Voices floating into his room from someplace in the house made it clear that Rachel and Lillian were once again playing together. The girls had become instant best friends, but the same couldn’t be said about their brothers. Somehow, Jake just seemed way too different. question that he’d missed quite a few tefillos since his move to Vienna. But with his siddur unpacked now, it felt good to reconnect with Hashem. “What are your plans for the day?” Ima greeted Eli a while later, when he entered the kitchen in search of breakfast. “Um, I don’t know. Yesterday, at the beit knesset, I met a boy my age. Chaim Silberberg. Abba told me he lives two buildings down. Maybe I should go over to introduce myself.” Chaim had struck Eli as being more religious than he was, but he still seemed like a promising friend. More promising than Jake probably. It was as though Ima had read his thoughts. “What about getting together with Jake Green, Eli?” Eli shrugged, no clear response coming to mind. Pulling over the plate of Israeli salad, eggs, and rice cakes that his mother had prepared, however, a new thought came to him. “Maybe if I bump into Jake somewhere I’ll ask him if we can do something together. But I don’t think he really likes sudden visits.” “Makes sense,” Ima said. “And you can definitely go over to the Silberbergs today if you’d like. Their father’s a rabbi, and Abba and I discussed using his services for your bar mitzvah.” Eli’s heart pounded as it usually did whenever his bar mitzvah was mentioned. The event was going to be a huge one, and he knew that his parents expected him to properly invest himself in the preparations leading up to it. So maybe he really would drop by the Silberberg home and introduce himself more formally to Chaim. Moments later, Eli’s plans made an abrupt about-face as he left his house and bumped, nearly headfirst, into Jake Green on the landing.

So much for telling Ima that if he bumped directly into Jake he’d try to do something with him… “Hiya,” Eli greeted his neighbor. “Any plans for today?” Jake shrugged. “Yeah. I’m going to ride the tram around and see how it works. Transportation in Vienna’s free during the summer for kids under fifteen.” Eli ogled him. “By yourself? Your parents let?” Jake nodded. Eli whistled at the boy’s adventurousness. Or maybe it was his anti-socialness… “Let me ask my mother if I can join you,” Eli said quickly. “It might be fun to tour the city together.” Jake didn’t respond, and Eli turned back to his house and punched in the code to unlock the door. He hoped Jake wouldn’t leave on his tram tour in the meantime. Imagine planning to tour a new city on your own. How strange… Moments later, permission to ride the tram with Jake received, Eli sighed with relief to see that his neighbor was still waiting patiently. In fact, there might have even been a sparkle of relief in Jake’s eye, attesting to his excitement at touring the city together with someone. “So,” Eli said, falling into step alongside Jake as the two boys exited the building together. “You’re welcome to invite me the next time you have a great touring idea. I’d love to come along.” Jake didn’t respond. Instead, he pointed to the tram station at the end of the block and explained that the station was part of a large interconnected system of trams and tram stations called the Strassenbahn, with tracks crisscrossing all over the streets in the twentythree districts of Vienna. ***

For two hours the boys made their way through the Viennese public transportation system. When they reached Praterstern, a station in the second district of the city, the boys’ eyes rounded upon seeing the city’s iconic Ferris wheel. Automatically, without discussing their decision first, the two boys alighted swiftly from the tram. “Wow!” Eli whistled. “That’s some wheel. Really old looking. No wonder it’s in all the tourist pictures of the country.”

“The man is dressed completely in gray and he has a bulge in his pocket.” Eli tried craning his head. He had no idea how Jake was able to see the man’s pocket from the angle they were sitting, but there was no mistaking the urgency in his voice. And in his words too. Hoisting himself upward yet a bit more, Eli finally saw a bulge in the man in gray’s pocket. A gun?

“It’s called the Wiener Riesenrad. It was built in 1897, and is the oldest Ferris wheel in the world. The rest of the amusement park, the Prater is also one of the oldest amusement parks in the world.”

Eli shivered. “Good thing we need to get off at the next stop.”

Eli whistled, amazed both at the extent of Jake’s knowledge and at the history of the wheel.

“All safe,” Eli said with a sigh of relief as the tram lumbered past. “That man didn’t get off with us.”

The boys continued to admire the wheel and amusement park for several minutes before shrugging over their lack of funds — and permission — to enter.

“You’re right,” Jake said grimly. “But look across the street under the street lamp.”

They returned to the tram station, somewhat subdued, and a sense of relief washed over them as the tram pulled into the station two moments later. “Look,” Jake whispered, his voice sounding somewhat urgent. Eli blinked. “Look at what?” “At him” Jake said, his voice unnaturally low. “That man three rows behind us?” Eli craned his neck slightly. He saw no one unusual in the row that Jake had mentioned. “I see lots of people,” he said with a shrug. “Who do you see that looks special?” “That man who’s wearing gray. See him?” A flush crept up Eli’s cheeks. Was wearing gray illegal or wrong? “I’m wearing gray too,” he

said quietly. “So what?”

Eli turned, wondering if Jake had a fondness for spy novels and drama Obviously there was nothing to worry about across the street. Only, there was. A man, not the same man they’d seen on the tram but a man dressed completely in gray just the same, was standing and smoking a pipe behind a streetlight. It was impossible to see his pants’ pockets at the angle he was standing, but Eli wouldn’t have been surprised if there was a bulge there too. “Maybe people in Vienna like wearing gray,” Eli said quietly, self-assurance clearly lacking from his voice. “Or maybe people in Vienna like spying on us,” Jake said grimly. Vibes of Thought

hat has been reverberating in my mind since the war began are the words from Tehillim 23 - "Even though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for You are with me." Wherever we are (and I am in America while three of my married children and grandchildren, my older brother, his children, cousins, close friends, and not to mention klal Yisroel are in Eretz Yisroel!), Hashem is with me. Even in the valley of the shadow of death. It makes no difference, Hashem is everywhere, and He is always with us. I feel like Hashem prepared me a little bit for this on the first days of Erev Yom Tov. One of my sons was involved in what could have, should have been, a horrific car accident. While driving in the rain to Shacharis that Friday morning, his car veered out of control, went over the curb and slammed into a utility pole, knocking it down. The car was completely totaled but my son walked away with one little scratch on his leg. Nobody else happened to be around and nobody else was hurt. I was very shaken (obviously) by his accident and supremely grateful (obviously) to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for sparing my son's life, but I had to make sense of it especially since a few weeks before that there had been a car accident and a young child, as a result of the accident, was now in a coma (Hashem yerachem!) Why was my son spared but this precious child is in a coma?

I’ve discovered that “Why?” in these instances is rarely the right question to ask. Because there is no human being who can possibly have all the information to be able to respond with any intelligence on the matter. Until prophecy is restored, I think we can safely put the “why” questions aside. Perhaps, therefore, the question should be: “What life lesson can I personally take away from what just happened or what is happening?” And the answer to that question, and what I have come to understand from this event, and horrific current events, is that Hashem has a specific plan for each one of us. It doesn't matter the circumstances we're in. - It can be a car accident, it can be a war, it can be anything. One person may be saved and one r"l may be hurt. It can be a picnic, and something happens. My intention is not to frighten anyone, it’s the opposite. The point is that we've all been handpicked for our particular life journey. Nothing is random. Whether I'm walking in the valley of the shadow of death, or whether I'm walking in a beautiful sun-drenched valley amidst vibrant, blooming flowers, Hashem is with me guiding my steps to where I need to be next. The key, I believe, is to hold on tight to His hand wherever we find ourselves and never let go!

Giraffe

ַ ‫זשיראף‬

The giraffe is the tallest animal on the planet and lives in Africa. It is so named because its appearance is similar to the camel (height and hump) and leopard (majestic, brown spots), and giraffe means camel-leopard in Afrikaans. The giraffe has an extremely long neck and feet, two horns upon its head, and elongated ears. Because it needs to pump blood up to its head, Hakadosh Baruch Hu created the giraffe a huge heart (with a height of 2 feet, a weight of 25 pounds, and walls 3 inches thick) and an abnormally high blood pressure (150 beats per minute)! 70

Another gift Hakadosh Baruch Hu bestowed upon the giraffe is a long tongue (of 20 inches or more), which helps it reach food at distances it otherwise wouldn’t have been able to get a hold of. Lot of trees the giraffe feeds on have sharp, thorny ends, but its tongue, lips and the interior of its mouth are hard, protecting it from the pointed thistles. On an average day the giraffe consumes 75 pounds of leaves, twigs, grass and fruits. During the first and last hours of the day it feeds at the tree, and spends the rest of its time-mostly in a lying position-regurgitating and rechewing the food it brings up from its intestines. The giraffe sleeps only 2 hours in a 24 hour period. Either it bends to a lying position-no simple accomplishment for a giraffeand rests its neck against its body, or else it remains upright.

At birth they are 6 feet high, and within several hours the young calves can run around. The mother is incredibly devoted to her young ones, protecting them with intense dedication. Lions, leopards, hyenas and wild dogs try to attack young giraffes as a potential meal, but the mother giraffe fends off each attack. At times, a young or inexperienced lion will try to attack an adult giraffe, but this is suicidal for the lion. With one kick of its huge foot (which is 12 inches in diameter at the bottom) the giraffe can crush the lion’s head (see photo lower left). Often, giraffes tussle with each other, using their long necks, (see photo) as a weapon. Usually, the spats end with a victor and minor wounds, but on occasion the spat can be fatal. When the giraffe drinks, it needs to bend a lot and is vulnerable to threats of attacks. Therefore, it mostly drinks when another giraffe is on guard (upper left photo). Due to its high blood pressure, it is likely that the giraffe’s head would’ve split during drinking. However, Hakadosh Baruch Hu created a ‘natural mechanism’ which closes the giraffe’s heart valve when it bends down to prevent that danger! Ma rabu maasecha Hashem! 72

His umbrella’s special moment came during an intense battle when a division of German army tanks approached the British battleground. Digby led a daring bayonet charge against the incoming enemy, holding a pistol in one hand and an umbrella in the other so that his battalion managed to successfully repel the Germans. The legend goes that he even jabbed his umbrella through the viewing slit of a German armored car, incapacitating the driver. That’s right: he stopped an army tank with his umbrella! Another time, the major spotted a fellow soldier being barraged by enemy fire. Digby immediately ran over and shielded the man with his umbrella, quipping, “Don’t worry, I’ve got an umbrella.” As for when someone questioned the umbrella’s practicality on the battlefield, Digby replied, “What if it rains?”

Getting Back on Track After the Holidays We just finished 3 sets of holiday marathons. To someone like me, the first thing that comes to mind is: TOO MUCH EATING! No matter how careful and determined one was over Yom Tov, it was still over 20 meals (if you count the meals before and after Yom Kippur). That's a lot of challah and a lot of late night eating. Not to mention all the tempting desserts and gourmet delicacies around. I have been hearing from many people how hard it is to get back on track after "partying" and being on ‘diet vacation’ for so long so I’ve compiled some DO’S and DON'TS to help you get back on track. .

Minestrone Soup

With autumn upon us, salad bowls are slowly giving way to soup tureens. This recipe is one of my personal favorites and perhaps the ultimate in vegetable soups. With a rich and hearty flavor that’s both comforting and robust, Minestrone soup is comprised of a savory and umami tomato base enhanced by a medley of vegetables, beans, and pasta. The aromatic depth of Italian herbs and ancient roots make it truly geshmak! The version below is both pretty and delicious. The kids will love its colors, and it’s also deceptively simple to make.

Ingredients: 2 tbsps olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 tbls pre-minced) 2 carrots, diced 2 celery stalks, diced 1 zucchini, diced 1 yellow squash, diced 1 cup green beans, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes (with juices) 6 cups vegetable broth 1 can (15 ounces) cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup small pasta (such as ditalini or elbow macaroni) 2 tsp dried Italian seasoning (or a mixture of dried basil, oregano, and thyme)

Salt and pepper, to taste 2 cups fresh spinach or kale, chopped Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)

Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions: 1. In a large soup pot or Dutch oven, heat the

olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté for 2–3 minutes, until fragrant and translucent.

2. Stir in the diced carrots, celery, zucchini,

yellow squash, and green beans. Cook for another 5–7 minutes, or until the vegetables begin to soften.

3. Add the diced tomatoes (with their juices)

and the vegetable broth. Bring the mixture to a boil.

4. Reduce the heat to low, and let the soup

simmer for about 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the vegetables to become tender.

5. Stir in the cannellini beans, kidney beans, and

small pasta. Continue to simmer for another 10–12 minutes, or until the pasta is al dente (firm when bitten).

6. Add the dried Italian seasoning (or a mixture of dried basil, oregano, and thyme), and season the soup with salt and pepper to taste.

7. Just before serving, stir in the chopped

fresh spinach or kale. Cook for an additional 2–3 minutes, allowing the greens to settle.

8. Ladle the minestrone soup into bowls.

Optionally, garnish each bowl with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil or parsley.

9. Serve your homemade Minestrone Soup with crusty bread or a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese for a hearty and satisfying meal.

CHINESE HOT AND SOUR SOUP

The first time I ate hot and sour soup, I was as intrigued by its unfamiliar taste combination as I was by its name. Turns out that the soup has origins in ancient Chinese cuisine and embodies the Chinese concept of balance and harmony by utilizing contrasting flavors. Personally, I like to go heavy on the chili, especially as the weather gets chillier (excuse the pun). But even a child-friendly hint of heat is enough to make this soup authentic — and a hit.

Ingredients 8 cups water (about 2 cups) shiitake (or other) mushrooms 8 oz (sliced thinly, about 1/8- to ¼-inch thick)

½ cup ½ cup

tofu, cubed (½-inch to 1-inch cubes) fresh or canned bamboo shoots, sliced (thin rounds or strips, about 1/8- to ¼-inch thick)

sliced carrots

¼ cup

sliced canned water chestnuts

(thin rounds or half-moons, about 1/8- to ¼-inch thick)

(thin rounds or pieces, about 1/8- to ¼-inch thick)

¼ cup sliced green onions 2 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 tbls pre-minced) ¼ cup rice vinegar 3 tbls soy sauce or tamari (for gluten-free) 2 tbls vegetable soup base (adjust to taste) 1–2 tsp chili garlic sauce (adjust to taste) 1 tsp ground white pepper (adjust to taste) 1 tsp toasted sesame oil Salt to taste Chopped fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)

Instructions 1. In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil. 2. Once the water has come to a boil, add the sliced mushrooms, tofu cubes, bamboo shoots, carrot slices, water chestnut slices, and minced garlic to the pot. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10–15 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

3. In a separate bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of vegetable soup base with a small amount of water (about ¼ cup) to create a smooth paste. Ensure there are no lumps.

4. Gradually whisk the vegetable soup paste into the simmering broth, stirring continuously to thicken the soup. 5. Stir in the rice vinegar, soy sauce (or tamari), chili garlic sauce, and ground white pepper. Simmer for another 5–7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

6. Taste the soup and adjust the seasoning, adding more vegetable soup base, vinegar, soy sauce, chili garlic sauce, or white pepper to achieve the desired flavor. Remember that the vegetable soup base contains salt, so you may not need to add any.

7. Stir in the sliced green onions and toasted sesame oil. 8. Ladle the hot and sour soup into bowls. Garnish each bowl with chopped fresh cilantro if desired. Note: For a fleishig version of hot and sour soup, follow the above recipe with these modifications: Substitute the tofu with ½ pound of boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, thinly sliced. Marinate the chicken slices in a mixture of 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 tablespoon cornstarch for about 15 minutes before adding them to the boiling soup broth together with the mushrooms, bamboo shoots, carrots, water chestnuts, and garlic. Simmer until the chicken is cooked through. Continue from step 3 above.

I missed the bus, and then I saw someone who really needed my help. His name was Mr. Goldstein, an elderly man from our neighborhood. he was struggling with his groceries, his tired eyes scanning the bustling street for assistance. Without a second thought, I rushed over and offered to carry his bags. As we walked, he shared stories of his youth, The holocaust and his family. Our encounter turned into a cherished friendship, and I learned that sometimes, missing the bus can lead to the most beautiful friendships.

A week before pesach we realized we really needed new dining room chairs. My sister and grandmother had just gotten theirs, which they had ordered from the same person about a year before. So we really need to chairs, so my mother decided Hashem can do anything, it doesn’t hurt to try. My mother texted the same person who my sister and grandmother have gotten their chairs from and asked if he by any chance had 14 dining room chairs available before Pesach. As soon as he saw the text, he immediately called my mother saying someone had just canceled their order for 14 chairs. He gave us an amazing deal. He charged us the price of regular dining room chairs, even though these were top quality chairs. That night we had 14 beautiful new chairs in our dining room. They even matched our other dining room furniture. Hashem worked it out to the last detail.
