LETTER f rom the EDITOR

h gutten chodesh! The month of Kislev has begun.

Somehow, every year on Rosh Chodesh Kislev, I find myself exhaling a month-long whoosh of air I didn’t notice I’d been holding in. The month of Cheshvan is a month when we generally get back into routine, and it’s also called “Mar Cheshvan (Bitter Cheshvan)” due to its lack of yamim tovim. Somehow, that bitterness always leaves an indelible imprint on me — so that I find myself waiting with bated breath for happier days soon to come. I know there are other reasons for the word mar. The word is a reference to Sarah Imeinu’s passing, and to the rain that we start to daven for in that month (mar meaning a drop of water in a bucket). Yet somehow, despite the potential that the month holds — with rain being the ultimate symbol of growth and expansion to come — I still find myself releasing that huge rush of air as the long-awaited month of Kislev arrives. This year, with the war in Eretz Yisrael and the increase in anti-Semitic incidents all over the world, that breath is an exponentially painful one to realize I’ve been holding in. There is the pain of having lost so many of our brothers and sisters. The pain of so many Jews having been taken into captivity. The pain of the unknown. And yet, somehow, like the rain of the month of Cheshvan and the potential that it symbolizes, looking back it’s possible to see refractions of light even in the murky bleakness. •

The number is far too low (and we need every last Jew back right now!), but the simchah that ensued when the IDF found and freed one of the captives was simply palpable. I don’t know about anyone else, but I cried when I heard the news, and then I cried some more when I saw the dancing that ensued in Kiryat Gat that night.

These small reflections of light are surely symbolic of a grander light yet to come. Kislev, the chodesh shel ohr — the month of light — is now upon us, and the small droplets of light we experienced in Cheshvan are sure to be multiplied manifold. Kislev isn’t referred to as the month of light only starting from the days of Chanukah — when we experienced the miracle of the overflowing jug of oil. Rather, it’s referred to as a month of brightness from the very first day — because light and goodness are reflective of our experience all month long. May this month indeed be one of overwhelming brightness, joy, and illumination, and bring about all the yeshuos that we need. Ah gutten chodesh!

Toldos Rising from the depths

When Yaakov comes before Yitzchak dressed in Esav’s garments made from goat skins, Yitzchak requests that he draw near and then he kisses him. At that moment, Yitzchak smells the fragrance of the garments, as the passuk states: “And he came closer, and he kissed him, and he smelled the fragrance of his garments” (Bereishis 27, 27). Rashi remarks that goat skins have a horrible smell and what Yitzchok smelled was the fragrance of Gan Eden that came into the room together with Yaakov. The Midrash in Bereishes Rabbah explains the word “‫בגדיו‬-his clothes” as “‫בוגדיו‬-his traitors”. The Midrash then brings two examples of traitors: Yosef Misisha and Yakum Ish Tzroros And tells us the stories behind. Yosef Misisha When the Romans planned to destroy the Beis HaMikdash they searched for someone to go into the Mikdash before them. They approached Yosef Misisha, a Jewish traitor, and offered to let him keep whatever he’d bring out of the Beis HaMikdash if he agreed to go in first. Yosef agreed and entered. He came out holding the golden Menorah, symbolic of Hashem’s shechinah. “Oh no,” the Romans said, “the Menorah is not appropriate for a non-aristocrat. It’s way too valuable. Go in again and take something else.” At this point, Yosef refused to comply. The Romans offered him a huge monetary reward,

yet he still refused to go in, stating: “Not enough I angered my G-d once. Must I do so a second time?” In response to this, the Romans tortured Yosef horribly. “Woe to me that I have angered my Creator!” Yosef cried out, and then he passed away. Rav Chaim Shmulevitz provides additional insights on this Midrash. He says that Yosef Misisha was at an all-time low. Even our enemies, who were about to destroy the Beis Hamikdash, weren’t brazen enough to enter the Beis Hamikdash before him. Yosef was not only willing to make the first breach for them, he also removed the menorah. The Romans understood that the menorah wasn’t meant for simple people, yet Yosef wasn’t sensitive to this fact. Still, when Yosef suddenly understood how low he had fallen and that his fall had angered Hashem, he was able to withstand excruciating torture. His cries stemmed not from his physical pain but because he reached the level of kiddush Hashem that Rabbi Akiva had reached. (Parenthetically, the Ponevitcher Rav explains that this story teaches the tremendous impact and influence of kedushah. Yosef, the traitor who entered the Beis HaMikdash to disgrace Hashem, refused to go in a second time and was killed al kiddush Hashem as a result, due to his short exposure to the Beis HaMikdash and its holiness. The kedushah there affected him so deeply that it caused a complete turnaround.) Yakum ish Tzroros Yakum Ish Tzroros was an assimilated Jew, son

of Rav Yosi ben Yoezer’s sister. Yakum was riding atop a majestic horse on Shabbos at the time that the Goyim were taking his uncle to the gallows. “How can it be?” Yakum questioned his uncle. “ I do whatever I please and have all the pleasures in life, yet you who toiled in Torah and mitzvos all your life are meeting with this end.” To this Rav Yosi responded, “If those who anger Hashem receive such a reward, how much greater will be the reward of those who follow His will?” “Who has done His will more than you?” Yakum replied. “If this is what those who do His will receive, how much more will those who anger Him receive [as punishment]?” Rav Yosi replied. These words pierced Yakum’s heart like the venom of a poisonous snake. He was overcome with remorse and killed himself with the four types of death meted out by Beis Din. Rav Yosi saw his nephew’s death bed floating in the air and said, “He has preceded me to Gan Eden.” In this story too, the protagonist was at a despicable level. He taunted his uncle before his death, instead of commiserating with him. He also engaged him in a discussion to lower his morale. And yet, despite his low level, his uncle’s words of truth led him to complete repentance. Rav Benzion Bamberger zt”l, mashgiach of Ponevitch, writes that within every lies a kernel of truth. Every Jew’s soul, even the sinners, has a spark that can be kindled and activated but we don’t usually pay attention to it. The Mesilos Yeshorim explains that one of the Yetzer Hora’s strategies is to make us busy and distract us from our spiritual goals because if we were a bit more attentive to the kernel of truth within us, we would immediately regret our sins and leave them entirely. Haksdosh Boruch Hu has instilled within all of us tremendous capabilities. I have been privileged to see this firsthand, in Eretz Yisroel, numerous times. For example, once while waiting for a doctor’s appointment, I noticed a non-affiliated looking secretary use the few minutes of time at her disposal to pull out a Tehillim and recite some. Another time, while at a rest stop in the middle of a trip, I watched our bareheaded bus driver

take out a kippah and tefillin from the glove department and use them to daven shacharis. Rav Elya Lopian explained the passuk: “From the depths I cry out to you, Hashem” (Tehillim 130, 1) to mean that every Yid has the truth hidden in the depths of his soul. The measure of the depth differs from person to person. Someone who fears Hashem does not have to search far for that truth, but the further one is from Hashem, the deeper that his truth is hidden. Still, every single person can reveal the truth. Rav Rubman, in his sefer Zichron Meir, adds the following thought. When Yaakov stood before Yitzchak, Yitzchak thought he was Esav and he was frightened at the thought of having to bless him. But the smell of the traitors, Yosef and Yakum, comforted him. If traitors have such a deep point of truth hidden within them, then even a rashah could receive a bracha… In fact, a rashah needs a blessing even more so as to merit revealing the hidden light within him. One of the many incredible stories I heard about this war reveals this concept. On Simchas Torah, a marginally affiliated bochur from Netivot debated whether to go to shul for hakafos or not. He was tired, disconnected and unmotivated. After much inner debate, he tapped into that place of truth and pulled himself out of his warm bed and home and went to daven. During davening, the sirens began to wail. When he returned home, he saw that his bed had received a direct hit from a missile. The passuk in Micha 7:8 states: ”My enemies should not rejoice because I fell. I have risen. When I sit in darkness, Hashem is my light.” (Micha 7:8). Chazal explain this to mean that if I hadn’t fallen, I would not have risen. If I hadn’t sat in darkness, I would not have seen the light. Falling and sitting in the dark bring one to see the truth. No matter where we may be or how low we have fallen, we can rise from the depths, shake ourselves off, and tap into the light of the Shechina. The Maharsha had a small yeshivah with many students and so the residents of his city decided to build a big, spacious building instead. They purchased a large lot and on the day of the hanachas even hapinah (corner-stone laying ceremony) all residents of the city arrived.The gabbai announced that the privilege of laying the first few cornerstones would be auctioned off, with the income from the auction being used to benefit the yeshivah. A man walked over to the gabbai and whispered in his ear, “I want to buy the first stone, even if it costs a fortune, because I want the yeshivah to benefit. But I want you to bid for me at the auction. I don’t want people to know who I am.”

While the speculations took place, the gabbai unobtrusively sidled over to the anonymous doner. “How would you like to take care of laying the corner stone ?” he asked.

The gabbai agreed, and began the auction.

“60.” “70.” “100.”

“490 rubles!” The richest man from the city called out. 490 rubles was a huge sum of money. Who could top a bid like that? But the gabbai merely said, “500!”And so the first stone was sold to an anonymous man for the astronomical sum of 500 rubles—a sum which would benefit the yeshivah greatly. When the city’s residents got wind of the secretive nature of the bid, they wanted to know who stood behind it. But the gabbai kept 26

“It’s true, I’m not a wealthy man,” the mansaid. “I mortgaged my house and spent all my money to make this contribution. My wife and I have been married for many years and have no children. I thought that maybe, in the zechus of this mitzvah, which I did secretly, Hashem would give me a child.” When the Maharsha heard this, he grew very excited. “I give you a berachah that you should have a son, and when he grows up, you should be zocheh to send him to my yeshivah!”

The sums rose higher and higher with the gabbai putting in an occoastional bid on behalf of the man who’d approached him.

And so it was that the Maharsha invited the philanthropist to his house. He was shocked, however, when he saw who showed up. The man didn’t look like a wealthy gvir at all.

“I would like to give the honor to the Maharsha,” the man answered. “But don’t tell the Maharshah who bought the honor for him.” And so it was. When it was time to lay the cornerstone, the gabbai announced that the Maharsha would get the privilege and . everyon waiting to see the identity of the anonymous donor was Disappointed. “!” When the event was over, the Maharsha approached the gabbai, saying: “Please

And so it was. About a year later, the donor’s wife gave birth to a son. When the boy became a bar mitzvah, his father brought him to enroll in the Maharsha’s yeshivah. But the gabbaim, would not agree to accept such a young boy as a student. The man went to speak to the Maharsha, and when the Maharshah saw him and recalled his he instructed that the boy be allowed into the yeshivah. Reb Yechezkel Shraga Lipshitz Halberstam The Stropkover Rebbe (April 5, 1908–November 9,1994)

Shira Yael Klein Reb Yechezkel Shraga was the third Stropkover Rebbe. He was a Rebbe already a rav when the holocaust broke out . He survived Auschwitz, although his wife and six of his children did not. After the war, he served as a rav in the DP camps, and then in the German city of Bamberg. He eventually made Aliyah to Eretz Yisrael, where he reestablished his chassidus.

I told this man to give me the key to his store, so that I could close it — because it is forbidden to have it open on the Sabbath — and he did not listen to me!” The German police officers turned to Moshe Katz. “Is it permissible to have the store open now?” They asked.

The rebbe then walked over to Moshe Katz and said gently, “Moshe, It’s Shabbos. It’s time to close the store.” “Listen, Mister,” Moshe replied harshly, fingering his big butcher’s knife. “This is my store, and I’ll do what I want here. Now beat it.” And so saying, he promptly called the police. When the police men arrived, the Rebbe walked over to them determinedly saying: “I am the chief rabbi of the city. 28

To which the man replied, “If you want, I’ll give you another smack.”

Though this wasn’t the Rebbe’s usual form of expression, he felt that harsh words were necessary at the time.

“Rebbe, Moshe Katz*, the butcher didn’t close his store for Shabbos!” they cried.

The rebbe strode out of the shul, and though he didn’t turn to see who was following,most of his congregants were there. They reached Moshe Katz’s store and the rebbe instructed them to enter the store so that soon the store was filled with men dressed in their Shabbos best.

To this, the Rebbe said: “I got a smack, but now you’re going to give something to Hashem as well.”

“I am the grandson of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz,” the Rebbe responded to this provocation. “If you close the store now, it’ll be good for you. But if not, you will meet a bitter end.”

One Friday night in Bamberg, the rebbe was in shul davening Kabbalas Shabbos when several men entered the shul, and made a beeline for him.

When Kabbalas Shabbos was over, the rebbe banged on the bimah, stating: “Rabbosai! Moshe Katz’s store is still open. We must protest this chillul Shabbos!”

Shabbos, but the storeowner mocked his words of rebuke, even giving him a smack in the face.

Despite the warning he received, however, the man refused to close his store.

Moshe Katz thrown for the loop, stammered: “Eh, well, it says in the Bible that it is forbidden. But I’m not religious.” The policemen were not impressed. “Give the rabbi the key!” they ordered. Moshe handed the rebbe the key and motioned to his followers to leave the store. Then, while the policemen watched the rebbe locked up the store. And when the policemen were out of the vicinity, the rebbe returned the key to Moshe telling him that the store needed to remain closed on Shabbos.. The Rebbe was zealous in his desire to uphold the sanctity of Shabbos. A different time, he went to protest in another Jewish store that was open on

A week or two later, tax inspectors came around on Friday night to inspect the stores, in search of illegal goods. In t hose post war day, many store owners sold things on the black market, but the Jews whose stores were closed for Shabbos weren’t caught. When the inspectors reached the store of this man, however, theycaught him red handed with illegal goods and immediately threw him into jail and confiscated his store. Only after extensive efforts were made, and a lot of money passed hands, was the man able to get out of jail and flee to a different city. I slept badly that night. The anonymous messages floated around my head. Russian spy? Novichok poisoner living next door to my family? Should we move? If we did, and if our neighbor’s reason for moving in next door to us was specifically to do us harm, how would moving help? Surely it would just make him want to follow us wherever, or maybe to act precipitously and attack us before we moved? So what should we do? Leave at the dead of night when Xavier was sleeping so he wouldn’t know we’d gone? A midnight flit isn’t quite the same as moving house. The former can be done without alerting the neighbors, but with the latter…well there’s a bit of a giveaway that you’re leaving with all the kerfuffle of the huge moving van schlepping boxes in and out of your house…

Actually, our boxes would have to come out; why would we move boxes in? My thoughts show you how badly I slept. Xavier was getting to me. And if he was getting to me; he was getting to Debbie and the kids. Having the knight-inshining-armor freak out wouldn’t do the Damsel in Distress and the mini-damsels (or whatever the male equivalent of damsel is, for Avi) any good either. I sat bleary eyed over breakfast, the equivalent of an intravenous injection of caffeine in a very small shot glass. I needed the hit, not the comforting hot drink. “You were very restless last night,” Debbie commented. She shot me a wordless look that said: “You still worried about those messages?” Non-verbal communication is a skill you learn when you have

teenaged or young adult kids around who never let you have any privacy. I managed to signal her a “yes” without nodding my head or saying a word and she nodded without nodding. The kids, who were in and out of the kitchen, grabbing food on the hoof, before going to do what kids that age do bein hazmanim, didn’t catch onto a thing.

Sighing inwardly, I went to answer it, girding my loins, as it were, against the upcoming confrontation.

At least that’s what I told myself. Looking back however, now, I doubt we were that clever.

It wasn’t Xavier and I almost sagged with relief. Then I stiffened when I took a second look at my caller.

When the kids were out of earshot, I reverted to verbal communication, which works better as a whole, however good we are at subliminal messaging.

A bland looking middle-aged man stood there, neatly dressed in a suit and tie. He had the kind of forgettable face you couldn’t describe to the police ten minutes after seeing it, clean shaven except for a barely-there moustache. His shoes were highly polished.

“I’m not sure what to do,” I said. “Maybe we should install surveillance cameras,” Debbie suggested, “Really good ones, that pick everything up and record everything. That way we can really keep an eye on him.” “He’d notice, wouldn’t he?” I said, although the idea was appealing. The idea of Xavier seeing the cameras and deciding we were a threat to whatever dastardly plan he had in mind for us, was less so. “Maybe see if you can find some really tiny little spy cameras that still deliver all of that tech,” Debbie said. “I’m sure real spies, Russian or otherwise, don’t rely on huge clunky highly visible CCTV cameras.” “Yeah, like there’s a spy shop right next to Kosher Kingdom on Golders Green Road,” I said. “Oh, and another one opposite, near the dry cleaners!” Debbie shot me a hard look. “Look. On. Line. Dear.” She said and walked out of the kitchen. A little later, I heard the front door close and her car start up. I had to go to the office, so I made a note on my phone to surreptitiously search for a professional spy shop from the office computer. The broadband connection was much better from there. I packed my briefcase and was about to head out to the

tube station when our doorbell rang. I had a feeling it would be Xavier, and I didn’t fancy dealing with him after all the messages. I thought of ignoring the doorbell, but when it rang again, it rang with a note of insistence.

“Mr. Feld? Mr…er …Natchman Feld?” he said, mispronouncing Nachman. I didn’t even feel like correcting him. “Yes?” I asked. I felt as suspicious as a street cat watching someone approach along the pavement, clenching her leg muscles and getting ready to flee. “May I step inside please? What I have to talk to you about doesn’t warrant standing on the doorstep. It’s of a highly confidential nature. If you get my meaning.” He tapped the side of his nose knowingly. His English was …English. Not Russian, or some other suspiciously foreign accented English. It was the real thing. I relaxed a teensy tiny bit. Anyone who spoke the Queen’s English couldn’t be all bad… Or could he? I stood aside. “You must forgive me,” I said, trying to sound posh, and not like a Golders Green Yid. “Things have been rather tense around here, and I’ve become very wary of ….” I didn’t know how to finish the sentence. Wary of whom? Russian spies? Strangers? People moving in next door resulting in weird messages by email and through my letterbox?

The stranger nodded and waved his hand in a “I know what you mean,” gesture. “That’s exactly why I’m here, Mr. Feld,” the stranger said in the same posh but soothing voice. “To discuss your new neighbor, Mr. Roberts.” I let him walk past me into my living room where I indicated that he should sit down in an upright but nicely upholstered chair. I have found, to my chagrin, that it’s harder to get rid of visitors when I let them sit on my couch. Either it’s just deliciously too comfortable, or I need to get it reupholstered because they physically can’t get up. I shall have to do some experiments on that couch. Meanwhile, this stranger sat on an easy-to-get-out-of chair. I sat down opposite him on an even easier-to-get-out-of hard chair with a barely upholstered seat which I could leap up from like a wild cat. Or whatever creature leaps up the quickest. I’m not much into zoology. We don’t even own a goldfish. “My name is Montague Stilton,” he said. “I represent a company called YourBequest.com.” “Quite a name,” I said guardedly. “On both counts: yours, and the company’s. Was your family in the cheese making business?” He looked at me in bafflement, then, getting the joke, he laughed uproariously. “You almost got me there Mr. Feld!” he guffawed. Then he stopped laughing almost as quickly as he started. It was unnerving. “What’s your company about?” I asked. “The name is more or less self-explanatory,” he said. “It’s about safeguarding people’s inheritance and bequests.” “Was it you who sent those messages about Xavier Roberts?” I asked. “You got messages? Not from us. We don’t send messages. We pay visits. Like I’m doing now.” “We got two messages,” I said. “One by email and one through our letter box, in an envelope. If it was you, it would put my mind at rest about …well, about who it was.” “Sorry,” he said. “So…” I said, letting the sentence hang. He was beginning to annoy me, and I wanted him out of my

house already. “Xavier Roberts bought the house from a Mr. and Mrs. Bernstein, right?” he said, eventually. He had taken out a small tablet and was typing on it. “Right,” I said. I didn’t want to be any more helpful than I needed to be. “Do you know why they were selling?” he asked, without looking at me. “Yes, they needed the money to move into a nursing home.” I deliberately didn’t name the nursing home. “I see. Can you tell me which nursing home, please?” Typing, typing. “I don’t see why you need to know this, to be honest,” I said. I felt like that cat from earlier, only this time I wanted to hiss at him. He looked up from his tablet and looked at me. “They have an uncle in South Africa they barely know or have anything to do with, but as he has no other family, he has reconnected with them in his will. He’s just died and left them a large sum they don’t know about. I think if they knew about it, it might make them feel better about the large bills of the care home. It’s a large sum, and I’d rather speak to them face to face. This kind of thing isn’t best done over the phone or digitally.” “I see,” I said. “Lucky old Bernsteins.” “So, if you could tell me which care home…” “I’ll do better than that,” I said, “I’ll take you there. Personally. It’s time I visited them anyway. I don’t have the car though; my wife took it. Did you come by car?” If you’re wondering about my change of heart, I was as wary as ever. I wanted to watch how Montague behaved and what he did when I took him there. I didn’t want to just send him to my dear friends, the Bernsteins, without me being there to watch over them. I looked at his face. If he was reluctant, or shocked by my suggestion, he did a great job of covering it up. “Excellent,” he said, “Yes, I have my car outside. Can we go right away? Or is there somewhere else you need to be?” To be continued…

Later that night, as Eli lay in bed waiting for sleep to overtake him, a sudden urge for a drink of orange juice overtook him. His parents didn’t like it when he came out of bed after bedtime. He’d have to tiptoe his way toward the kitchen. Eli’s fuzzy red slippers muffled his footsteps in the carpeted hallway, but he froze near his father’s office causing the floorboards to creak. The light was on in the office. Maybe, if Eli played his cards right, tonight he’d finally learn why the Katzes had relocated to Vienna so suddenly. On impulse, Eli snuck closer to the door of the office, and put his ear to it.

Vienna. What critical information was his father talking about? “A month…but that might have changed…. No. No. No worry about bugs…. The scrambling software is in order.” All thoughts of the orange juice flew out of Eli’s head as he considered his father’s words. Abba had once told him that scrambling software was a program that people used to automatically scramble and mask their words over the phone conversation so that any third party listening in—aka any enemies— would only hear gibberish and not the true conversation. So, Abba was using scrambling software now. He was clearly discussing top secret information. “Yes, I know about the backup, but I don’t think I’ll need it. They have no reason to suspect me of being here for anything less than a diplomatic mission…I’m keeping an eye out on them. Thank you for your concern. Shalom.” Eli heard the phone click off and then the sound of clicking and typing. The image of Abba sitting at his laptop computer back in Holland suddenly sprung to mind. Abba was a diplomat during the day, and that meant that he was in charge of Israel’s international relations, but he also had a hobby of fiddling around with his computer— using it to monitor other people’s computers. “Uncovering encrypted data,” Eli had heard Abba tell Ima. Ima’s response had been something like:

“Careful, your hobby might get you into hot water one day.” Eli wasn’t sure if Ima’s concern was due to the nature of Abba’s hobby—was it legal to monitor another person’s computer? — or due to the nature of the people whose computers he tried to monitor. Eli’s head began to spin. Maybe, as a diplomat, Abba had discovered top secret, dangerous information, and that information was what had brought them out to Vienna. They have no reason to suspect me of being here for anything less than a diplomatic mission. Which meant that the Katzes were in Vienna for reasons other than a diplomatic mission. The cup of orange juice that he’d come out of bed for suddenly seemed like a good idea. If only everything were as easily obtainable. Eli began continuing down the hallway, but he halted in his tracks when the door to his father’s office suddenly opened. “Eli?” Eli leapt slightly at the sound of his father’s voice, and to his chagrin, he lost his footing, tumbling inelegantly onto the carpeted hallway floor. “Uh, yeah Abba,” he croaked. Bending over slightly, Abba held his hand out to help Eli back into a standing position. “I’m sorry you hurt yourself, motek,” he said. “Are you okay?” Eli nodded and then blushed. He didn’t feel like he deserves his father’s sympathy after listening in to his conversation. “You’re not the greatest eavesdropper, you know,” Abba added. “I can give you a few pointers if you want for next time.”

The blush on Eli’s cheek deepened, but it then faded in the face of Abba’s suggestion that they both head into kitchen for that coveted cup of orange juice. Now, how could Abba have known? Eli watched as Abba busied himself at the fridge and counter, filling two cups with the juice. “Uh, I’m really sorry,” he said lamely, as his father worked. “I… uh…uh…I’m sorry” “You shouldn’t have listened in on my phone conversation,” Abba told Eli, handing him a cup of juice before setting his own cup down and sitting beside him at the table. “But now that you did, maybe you can tell me what you were so curious about?” Eli’s mind began to whirl. What wasn’t he curious about. “Uh, I guess I wanted to know more about the move, and why we needed to come here instead of going back to Israel like planned. Is anything dangerous going on?” “It sounds like you have some valid questions and concerns,” Abba said with a laugh. “But the truth is that’s for your own sake you’re better off not knowing the answer to those concerns.” “Why? So that if the bad guys capture me, I’ll have nothing to tell them?” Abba laughed. “You have quite an imagination, Eli,” he said. “Why would you think that there are bad guys following us?” Eli’s thought of the man in the MercedesBenz and on the street—who resembled the man who’d been on the tram. Why indeed? I know there’s backup, but I don’t think I’ll need it.

According to Abba, the family was safe. He obviously didn’t feel threatened in any way. To tell him then, or not? Hours after having seen the man downstairs the notion of telling his father about the incident seemed like a silly one. So what if a man in a slow-moving MercedesBenz had followed him home? There’d been nothing overt about the man to turn him into a criminal. Nothing really dangerous and Eli didn’t want Abba to think that he was a scaredy cat. Eli and Abba downed their cups of orange juice in silence. When they were done, Eli wordlessly got up to toss their cups into the garbage bin in the cabinet under the sink. Suddenly, he froze. A wire was jutting out of the cabinet hinge. His heart skipped a beat. “Abba,” he whispered. “Can you look at this please?” Like a bolt of lightning, Abba had crossed the room and was at his side. Shining the flashlight from his phone over the area of Eli’s concern, he pulled out a small, almost invisible object with a wire. “A listening bug,” he mouthed. Eli’s heart sank. But then Abba took his phone, turned on a program of sorts and waved it over the tiny wire in his hands. “The bug isn’t working,” he said more audibly this time. “But where there’s one bug there may be others. I’m going to have to check the apartment to see where they were placed.” To be continued...

The Bamboo Train, Cambodia Also known as the “Norry”, the Bamboo Train is a unique mode of transport that hauls passengers and cargo between the city of Battambang and Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. At least, at one point, it did. Today the railway tracks are mostly in disrepair, meaning the bamboo ride only runs about 7 kilometers (about 4 ½ miles) to a nearby village and back. The Norry consists of a platform made of planks of bamboo, laid over two axles and reused military tank wheels, and powered by a small motor. Though, with its simple bamboo platform and crude axles, the bamboo train seems to be held together by mere threads, it can still pick up speed to an impressive 31 mph.

Reindeer Sledging, Finland A reindeer is a type of deer that lives in the northern parts of Europe, Asia, and North America.

Typical to the reindeer are their large, branching antlers.

Sledging is the

activity of traveling or sliding downhill over snow on a sled. Put those two together and it sounds like a ride at an amusement park in the North Pole, right? Actually, you’re only partially right because for the native Sámi people of Lapland, Finland—near the Arctic Circle (a long way away from the North Pole) this is daily life! Totora Reed Boats, Peru Totora reed (aka schoenoplectus californicus) grows in swampy areas throughout the Andes, in Central America, and much of the southern United States, where it’s known as California bulrush. Ancient discovered painted ceramics indicate that, two thousand years ago, Moche fishermen of Peru used these reeds to construct pointy prowed boats. The cool thing is that even today,

along

Peru’s northern coast still build and use these boats, which they call caballitos (little horses). To make them,

they

take

dried

totora reeds and tie them tightly together.

This is

not simple work. Making caballitos

demands

hard

physical

labor often under the hot sun. Once the boat is ready for use, the fisherman sits, kneels or stands on the widest part of the boat, and paddles through the waves, using a wooden or bamboo oar, to get to the deeper water beyond. Uros people of Lake Titicaca in Peru use boats made from totora reeds for their daily transportation, known as balsas, which are generally larger than the ones used on the Pacific coast. Some natives use totora for utensils and some even build their houses with totora. Talk about a next level game changer!

This is because they have an amazing internal storage system, their hump, that stores their water for them and keeps them from dehydrating over the long treks in the desert. Today in the deserts of Rajasthan, India, camels are still used for transportation, especially for thrilling camel safaris.

Venetian Gondolas, Italy Venice, a city in Italy, is built on a group of 118 small islands separated by expanses of open water and canals.

Over 400 bridges link these islands together.

Most of the time,

Venetians prefer to walk to the places they have to go because that’s generally the fastest and most efficient way to move around Venice. The second-best option, however, is via water transport. For centuries, the gondola, a sleek, keelless (flat-bottomed) boat with gleaming black paintwork, was a major means of transportation and the most common boat seen sailing within Venice. Though in modern times, the gondola still plays a role in the city’s public transportation serving as traghetti (small ferries) over the Grand Canal, today the vaporetto boat (a water bus) is the number one transportation in Venice. Nevertheless, the elegant gondola is still the most famous symbol of Venice and a huge hit with tourists.

Funiculars, Various Countries A funicular is a cable railway system that travels up and down a mountainside. The system uses two cars that are permanently attached to opposite ends of a cable looped over a pulley at the upper end of the track. As one car goes up, the other goes down, and they are counterbalanced to ensure safe and efficient travel along the railway track. The name “funicular” comes from a Latin word that means “rope” because, in the past, they used actual ropes and were moved by people or animals. The oldest known funicular is in Hohensalzburg Castle, Austria and is known as the Reisszug. Funiculars aren’t just useful; in places like Valparaiso, Chile, and Switzerland, they offer travelers some seriously epic views. They’re both a smart and scenic way to get around.

Habal-Habal, Philippines Imagine a motorcycle, but stretched out to carry up to eight people, their goods, and sometimes even livestock! Sounds like a ride on the back of Dr. Seuss’ seven hump wump of Mr. Gump, right? Well, this motorized version of the seven hump wump extends widthwise as opposed to lengthwise and it’s called the Habal-Habal. It’s probably also more dangerous. Typical Habal-Habal drivers are very skilled, but at the end of the day, they’re still driving a two-wheel motorcycle that’s balancing many people. Not to mention that the HabalHabal is usually used for transportation over country roads that are really dirt tracks no wider than the width of one person. Still, rain, sun, wind; almost nothing stops Filipinos from riding their Habal-Habals when they need to get somewhere. Poor Filipinos will often load up their Habal-Habal with fifty kilo bags of rice, huge bags of coconuts plus passengers. Some drivers of a Habal-Habal have been known to load up eight people: one on the handlebars, one on the gas tank, four behind the rider, and on the footrails one person hanging onto another. I’m not sure about you, but I have no intention of getting on the back of that thing with another seven passengers plus their luggage! Though it’s probably fun to watch.

Tuk-Tuk: The Urban Transport Phenomenon Ever heard of the tuk-tuk? Ever heard the sound of a tuk-tuk? The tuk-tuk is a motorized version of the traditional pulled rickshaw or cycle rickshaw (A rickshaw is a light twowheeled hooded vehicle drawn by one or more people and a cycle rickshaw is a threewheeled bicycle with a hooded seat for passengers behind the driver). Originating in Thailand but common throughout modern-day Asia and especially India, the tuk-tuk got its name from the ‘tuk tuk tuk tuk tuk’ sound that the earliest (tuk-tuk) engines made. While they might seem unconventional, tuk-tuks are an important mode of transportation for millions of people in places like India. Tuk-tuks work very well in large, congested cities (and with 1.4 billion people, they’ve got plenty of those in India!). Not only can tuk-tuks comfortably seat 5 people, they’re smaller, more practical, and can weave through traffic jams and tight streets faster than regular cars and buses. Also, they’re often cheaper than taxis, and are perfect for tourists who want to do their sightseeing as they travel through the city via this totally open-air vehicle.

Maglev Trains, Asia The maglev train in China, South Korea and Japan is a super cool, futuristic way to travel. Maglev (no, it’s not a Hebrew word – its name is sourced in the two words - magnetic levitation) is a system of train transportation that uses two sets of electromagnets: one set lifts the train off the track while the other pushes it forward. These trains rise about four inches above the ground and can zoom at a speed of up to 431 km/h (268 mph). That makes them one of the quickest forms of ground transportation on the planet. Bet you wouldn’t mind trading in your morning bus ride for a ride on the Maglev, eh?

Chicken Buses, Guatemala Guatemala has a unique mode of transportation that’s hard to miss, called the “chicken bus.” Foreign travelers call these buses chicken buses because along with its human passengers, cargo sometimes includes chickens or other live animals. Not only do animals ride the bus as passengers, but the bus is also often used to transport all types of merchandise like overflowing baskets of vegetables, fruits, flowers, textiles, and more. They’re auctioned at around $2,000 and sold to people who then drive them down to Guatemala. Upon arrival, these buses undergo a major overhaul, internally and externally. They’re painted in striking, bold colors and often personalized to their new owner’s preference. It’s common for each bus to have a name, usually a woman’s name or the name of the bus line. So don’t be surprised to see a green and red Esmeralda with outlandish shiny bumpers and lights if you’re in the area. And if you have gumption, jump on for a ride!

When capturing deer or larger animals,‬‬ ‫‪however, they do so in groups.‬‬ ‫‪Hakadosh Baruch Hu created coyotes with‬‬ ‫‪exceptional visual, auditory and olfactory abilities. They‬‬ ‫‪can smell mice and rats which run beneath the earth.‬‬ ‫‪They jump up, dive (see upper photo at left), dig in, and‬‬ ‫‪catch the animal. Larger animals like rabbits or squirrels‬‬ ‫‪require a chase.‬‬ ‫‪Coyotes aren’t picky with their food and eat almost‬‬ ‫‪everything they can get their hands on. A partial list:‬‬ ‫‪deer, sheep, rabbits, birds, frogs, snakes, fish and‬‬ ‫‪insects. 90% is animals, but the rest are grass and fruit,‬‬ ‫‪and sometimes nuts or grains.‬‬ ‫‪A similarity they share with the wolf is vocalization.‬‬ ‫‪Several times a day the coyote lifts its head towards the‬‬ ‫‪sky to bark (see both lower photos). Young cubs are‬‬ ‫‪taught to do this. They emit 11 types of calls, consisting‬‬ ‫‪of 3 varieties: alarm (trouble on the horizon), greeting‬‬ ‫‪(a simple hi) and communication.‬‬

So while she sings Mah Tovu and Adon Olam, she sweeps across the room, trying to bring some order to a volcanic setting. But then she notices the Cheerios decorating the floor in the foyer — when did that happen? — and the coats sunbathing on the bench instead of resting on their proper hooks. And when she opens the coat closet— Oh my! Whom does she bump into but her very own toddlers who were, apparently, not playing quietly upstairs after all… Then, while they giggle out of the closet and she places the last coat on its hook, she hears the words “haGomel chasadim tovim l’amo Yisrael” tumble out of her mouth with the enthusiasm and finality of an overpracticed valedictorian speech. And she freezes in her Cheerio-crunching tracks. Because she has come to the sobering realization that, despite her best efforts, she is eons away from being a good listener. Because how can she be a good listener to her family when she doesn’t even pay attention to the words that come out of her own mouth daily — the words that profess Hashem’s constant goodness and beneficence? It’s an ear-opening lesson, and at the end of Shabbos, she researches appropriate data on the subject. Here’s what she comes up with:

Good-Listening Basics 1. Make Eye-Contact Truthfully, staring into your speaker’s eyes can get a little distracting, like if you start noticing that one eye is bigger than the other, or you begin to wonder how they got their eye-liner to last through Shabbos. If you have to look away, better to look upward (think UFO sighting) or sideways (Is that my kid eating all the cholent at the kiddush?) than to look down (I’d rather be washing dishes than listening to you go on about the decor at your niece’s sheva brachos).

2. Demonstrate Interest Make sounds like “Mm-hmm” and “Totally!” as opposed to sounds like “Zzzz” or “a bas Yisrael doesn’t chew gum .”

3. Don’t Interrupt There’s a reason Pirkei Avos declares that the sign of a wise person is that he doesn’t interrupt. Keep that in mind the next time you find yourself filling in every other word of your spouse’s devar Torah.

4. Listen without Judging Like when your kid says, “Ma, they gave me detention just because I wasn’t sitting in my seat and by mistake dropped my ketchup chips on Sruly’s head. Detention! Can you believe it?!” You can think, Um, YES, I DO, but don’t say it. I think.

5. Face the Speaker How the dishes will get washed, the laundry clean, homework done, and supper made while we’re doing all this facing and eye-contacting is beyond me. But don’t look at me; look at the speaker.

6. Stay Focused Listening is really a multitasking exercise in and of itself, because while you’re concentrating on all the rules of how to look like you’re listening, you must also actually listen. So if you were planning on composing this week’s Shabbos menu and shopping list in your head while your daughter reads you her report on medieval economic history, forget about it.

7. Don’t Think about What You’re Going to Say Next Meaning, when your twenty-five-year-old daughter goes on about how her shidduch date last night didn’t actually speak English, and that Google Translate might work for your interactions with the cleaning lady but not so much here, rein in the words that are sitting on the tip of your tongue (“Does tomorrow night work for a second date?”).

Avocado, peeled, pitted, and cubed

Dried cranberries

Toasted pumpkin seeds

For the Dressing: ¼ cup

Olive oil

Honey mustard

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). 2. Drizzle olive oil, salt, and pepper over diced sweet potato and toss to coat.

3. Spread the diced sweet potato on a baking sheet in a single layer and roast for 20-25 minutes, or until tender and golden brown, turning occasionally. Allow to cool.

Combine the arugula, cooked quinoa, sliced red onion, cubed avocado, dried cranberries, toasted pumpkin seeds, and cooled sweet potato in a large salad bowl.

5. Prepare the dressing by whisking together the olive oil, honey mustard, lemon juice, honey, minced garlic, dried parsley, salt, and pepper until well combined.

Cinnamon Flax "bran" Muffins Ingredients

Directions

2 cups Ground Flax Seed

Preheat your oven to 350ºF (177ºC) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.

1 tbsp Baking Powder 1/4 tsp Sea Salt 2 tbsps Cinnamon 6 Egg (room temperature) 1/3 cup Coconut Oil (melted) 1/2 cup Water (warm)

In a medium bowl, mix together ground flax seed, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Use a whisk to stir until well combined. In another bowl, beat eggs with a whisk for 30 to 60 seconds. Add coconut oil and water, mixing until combined. Add wet ingredients to dry and stir until combined. Let the batter sit for 1 to 2 minutes to thicken slightly. Divide the batter between muffin cups and bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. Let cool and enjoy!

MOVE It was an honor to interview Yechiel of FM Home Loans and hear about the services his company offers as well as important tips for purchasing a home.

Hi, Yechiel. Tell us a little about yourself and what you do. I’m a loan officer at FM home loans, a mortgage bank that has thus far helped hundreds of families and individuals purchase homes. My mother’s been a branch manager at FM for as long as I can remember. As a child, I learned about DTI (debt-to-income) ratios and LTV (loan-to-value) ratios while other kids learned how to ride bikes (I have since figured out biking). I was always fascinated by house closings, and as a kid I’d accompany my mother to many of them. As soon as I was old enough to think about my future, I knew I would become a loan officer. Three years ago, I got my loan-officer license and started working for FM. Since then, I’ve seen rates fluctuate from the lowest to highest numbers in thirty years. It’s been fun helping clients through these fluctuations.

What is a preapproval, and how easy is it to receive? A preapproval is essentially a bank (or broker) confirming the review of a buyer’s finances and that the buyer meets the initial criteria for the loan they desire. When a potential buyer contacts a loan officer, the officer works with the buyer to figure out what he can afford, and which loan is best for his needs. This is based on the buyer’s income, expenses, and credit score. After that conversation, the loan officers sends the potential buyer for preapproval, with documents detailing the loan request, the down payment available, and the loan program they will use (FHA, Conventional, VA, etc.). It’s a very quick process, which most real estate agents require a buyer to undergo prior to showing them a house. Realtors don’t want to show buyers houses they can’t afford.

Is there an easy way for a potential buyer to calculate if they will be approved for a house they see advertised? My clients usually text me an address, and I respond with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down in a few minutes. I do this after we have a short initial conversation. To calculate this on your own, follow this formula:

Business Vibes Take your monthly pretax income. Multiply that number by 45 percent. That’s how much you can afford to pay toward debt monthly. Next, use an online mortgage calculator to figure out how much your monthly payments would be for the house you saw advertised. Add this sum to the monthly expenses that show up on your credit report (not food or uber rides, just other loans and leases). If your debt with the new mortgage falls below 45 percent of your income, you should be good to go! Please note that this calculation works only for W2 income. For 1099 income, the calculation isn’t as simple.

Yes. First-time homebuyers are a different parashah. They can buy a house anywhere, with any bank, and their rates will be a drop better than for non-first timers. However, the difference isn’t usually that significant. In certain areas, though, local banks are incentivized by the government to give a number of loans to “median-income first-time homebuyers.” They need to hit a certain number, and when they fall behind on that number, they can offer loans at extremely cheap rates and with great terms. In the Lakewood area, there are a few banks that can make these great offers, and when a borrower comes to me who fits the criteria for such a loan (with his median income, not being a cosigner, etc.), I encourage him to try there first!
