Vayeira Chesed Builds Worlds
In the beginning of this week’s parashah, Hashem appeared to Avraham, who was sitting at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. Rashi explains that Hashem made the sun shine intensely so Avraham, who was in pain after undergoing a bris milah at the age of ninety-nine, wouldn’t be encumbered by guests. When Hashem saw that Avraham was more distressed by his inability to do chesed than from his physical pain, He sent three malachim dressed as Arabs to visit him. Avraham then asked Hashem to wait while he went to take care of their needs. From this incident, Chazal learn that: “גדולה הכנסת אורחים יותר מקבלת פני — השכינהWelcoming guests is greater than welcoming the presence of the Shechinah” (Shabbos 127a). The Michtav MeiEliyahu questions this scene. How could Avraham leave HaKadosh Baruch Hu to attend to Arab idol worshippers?! The answer, he says, is that welcoming guests is also a form of greeting the Shechinah and that it has

an aspect to it that is greater and deeper than receiving nevuah, prophecy. Nevuah is one of the greatest gifts from Heaven. But it’s not a deed or a possession and therefore has no permanence. Kayin, for example, spoke with Hashem, but he was also capable of murder. With chesed, however, one separates himself from his predisposition and becomes capable of permanently acquiring Hashem’s presence, which then becomes part of his essence. Rav Dessler teaches that the root of all good middos is giving, and the root of all bad middos is taking. By giving to others, a person ignores his personal preferences and deepens his recognition of Hashem. This is the path to emunah, as it allows one to acquire the Shechinah internally as opposed to just externally. Avraham’s exemplary chesed illustrates the tremendous growth we can achieve by practicing this mitzvah. Rav Yisrael Salanter once asked his students to define chesed. However, he

was unhappy with their explanations and offered his own definition, stating, “Chesed means stepping out of my own understanding and needs, and fulfilling someone else’s desire, no matter how unnecessary or silly it may seem.” Rav Pam develops this explanation by analyzing Avraham’s hachnasas orchim. Avraham was on a uniquely high spiritual level and communicated directly with Hashem. He didn’t need physical luxuries himself, yet he was able to recognize the physical needs of his guests, running to slaughter three cows so as to serve each one a fresh tongue with mustard. Oftentimes, all that is required of us to be able to elevate our everyday actions with kindness is to invest some thought into ways in which we can do so. Rav Yitzchak Zilberstein suggests that when we see someone collecting tzedakah, even if we’re unable to assist, we can still offer a smile, an encouraging word, or a polite apology. When we receive an email, phone call, or read an ad about a chesed campaign, we can take a minute to acknowledge it and give it attention. If possible, we can donate. And if not, we can offer a sigh or shed a tear. Recently, I cofacilitated an international networking group for frum women in business. In one of the breakout rooms, there was an exercise where each person took a turn to share a difficulty, and then the group had to brainstorm ways that

everyone could help each other. Aviva, who lives far away from everyone else, said that she needed help with many things but had no idea how anyone could possibly help her due to the long distance between her and everyone else. “Only Hashem can help me,” she said, desperation in her voice. There was quiet in the breakout room after that, and then Miriam said, “Aviva, what’s your full name? We can daven for you!” I was touched. Miriam lives on a different continent, is in a different social circle, and is essentially a stranger to Aviva, yet she was determined to help her newfound friend in whatever way she could. When I asked Miriam for permission to share this story, she was mystified. “Wouldn’t most people offer to keep someone in mind in their thoughts and prayers or offer whatever that person says they need?” she asked. “I don’t want to say that what I did was no big deal, but I’m sure it wasn’t extraordinary.” I told Miriam that, actually, what she had done wasn’t something to be taken for granted. Yes, davening for someone is an easily accessible, almost effortless way to help someone in need — but it still requires some mindful attention. Our gedolim have shown us the extent to which we should care for others, teaching us that being sensitive to other people’s

needs elevates us. Once, when Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach was hospitalized, his family brought him warm and fresh homemade food. Rav Shlomo Zalman insisted that they offer some of the food to his roommate, even though they weren’t sure if he would make a berachah before eating it. He explained that it was a matter of pikuach nefesh for the roommate to smell the inviting aroma and not be able to taste the food. Rav Sholom Schwadron related the following story about Rav Elya Lopian: In the early days of Kfar Chassidim, Rav Elya was once walking to his yeshivah when he smelled something burning and saw a black barrel on fire. He then saw two workers with hats and canteens sweating from exertion and the intense heat. He watched the workers take the lid off the barrel, fill pails, and then refill them. Amazed, Rav Elya asked the workers what they were doing. “Rabbi, I have kids at home, and this how I work to support them,” the first worker responded. “I pave roads for twelve hours a day and receive a salary of twenty liras. With my wages, I buy one loaf of bread, and one cucumber and tomato each day. I also buy one egg a week. Paving roads isn’t really a choice. I must work hard to earn my bread.” Upon hearing his friend’s explanation, the second worker shook his head. “Rabbi,”

he said, his voice full of enthusiasm, “I’m doing chesed. Right now, the roads are rough and unpaved. I see women, old and young, laboriously pulling wagons on the rocky road, and they often get stuck They have to pull and push and expend great energy to return home with their groceries intact. Then, when they finally do arrive home, they’re too tired to care for their families. I’m doing chesed by paving these roads so these devoted women can tend to their husbands and have strength to feed their families.” Rav Elya hugged the second worker and ran to his yeshivah. There, he interrupted the bachurim who were learning, saying, “Listen to what this generation’s gadol in chesed just said. He’s working, but he isn’t doing it for the twenty liras he’ll earn. He’s doing the same work as the next fellow over, but with his perspective he’s building the world.” Chesed is the foundation of the world’s existence. As the pasuk states: “Olam chesed yibaneh — The world is built from chesed” (Tehillim 89:3). When we put in some thought and move beyond ourselves into another person’s space, we have the ability to build worlds. Reb Tzvi Hirsch Horowitz HaLevi of Chortkov (1680–1753)
Shira Yael Klein Reb Tzvi Hirsch was the rav of Chortkov when the Baal Shem Tov’s fame began to spread. Many gedolim at the time vehemently opposed the Baal Shem Tov’s approach, but Reb Tzvi Hirsch chose to stay out of the machlokes. One time a sheilah came before Reb Tzvi Hirsh, and he paskened that the matter was muttar. After rethinking the issue, however, Reb Tzvi Hirsch realized that he should have paskened that it was assur. It was too late, however, as the deed had already been done. Reb Tzvi Hirsch was very upset, and upon some introspective thinking to figure out what might have led him to pasken incorrectly, he decided that perhaps he was incorrect in not supporting the Baal Shem Tov.
would they marry off their daughter? Would the whole shidduch break up? “You have to speak to Asher Amschel,” they told Reb Tzvi Hirsch. “He’s the only one who knew where the money was. He just got married and has started a business. He has a lot of expenses; maybe he took it.” Eventually, Reb Tzvi Hirsh gave in. He approached Asher Amschel and said, “I know you just got married and opened a business. I understand it was very tempting…the gold coins were right there, perhaps you borrowed them…”
Reb Tzvi Hirsh had saved up 500 gold coins for his daughter’s wedding and hid them in his shtender when the coins went missing. The only other person who knew about the coins was Asher Amschel Rothschild, Reb Tzvi Hirsch’s shamash. The Horowitz family was frantic. The wedding was coming up, and all of the money they had saved was gone. How

The police, upon learning of this story, brought the bag of gold coins to Reb Tzvi Hirsh, telling him they were the gold coins that he’d lost.
And then the truth dawned on Reb Tzvi Hirsh. Asher Amschel had never taken the money to begin with. He had “paid him back” out of his own personal savings. Reb Tzvi Hirsh ran to apologize to Asher Amschel, asking him why he’d confessed to taking the money if he’d never done so.
When Reb Tzvi Hirsch arrived, the Baal Shem Tov shook his hand and said, “Welcome, Rav of Chortkov. What are you worried about? You paskened correctly.”

“Get the man drunk, and he’ll spill the beans,” the police advised, and that’s indeed what the bartender did. He got the gentile good and drunk, until he started talking. He said that his wife had found the coins while cleaning the rabbi’s house for Pesach. She’d then brought the coins home, but he didn’t use them right away so as not to arouse suspicion.
“What are you talking about?” asked a confused Reb Tzvi Hirsh. “Asher Amschel already gave back the money…”
Reb Tzvi Hirsh decided to travel to Tluste, another town in the jurisdiction of Chortkov, to meet the Baal Shem Tov. That way he would be able to formulate his own opinion of the Baal Shem Tov.
From that incident onward Reb Tzvi Hirsh and the Baal Shem Tov loved and respected each other greatly, though Reb Tzvi Hirsh never became a chassid. Reb Tzvi Hirsh’s sons were the holy brothers Reb Shmelke of Nikolsburg and Reb Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz, the Baal Hafla’ah.

“I saw how much stress you were under,” explained Asher Amschel. “So I figured I’d help you and manage somehow.”
“I’m so sorry,” Asher Amschel replied. “I’ll get you two hundred gold coins now, and the remaining three hundred within the next six months.”
The Gemara says that one who is chosheid b’kesheirim (suspects an innocent person) must then give them a berachah. Reb Tzvi Hirsh had suspected the innocent Asher Amschel of being a thief, and so he gave him a heartfelt berachah to always have lots and lots of money.
The family heaved a huge sigh of relief when Reb Tzvi Hirsch showed them the money from Asher Amschel.
That was the beginnings of the famous Rothschild dynasty, the amazingly wealthy banking family.
Meanwhile, the local bartender noticed something strange. One of local non-Jews had begun to come into his bar every day, purchasing a drink each time with a gold coin. The man, however, didn’t look like the type to have gold coins to throw around on a daily basis.
Reb Tzvi Hirsh Horowitz’s yahrzeit is Tes Vav Cheshvan, which falls out this year on Monday October 30th.

Rav Menachem Mendel Schneersohn The Tzemach Tzedek (1789–1866) Shira Yael Klein One year before Rosh Hashanah, the Baal HaTanya sensed that he was fated to pass away for having openly spread the secrets of chassidus. When his daughter Devorah Leah heard this, she told her father that she was willing to die instead of him. Her only condition was that the Baal HaTanya take her young son under his wing. The Baal HaTanya refused her offer, and instead sent a pidyon nefesh to Reb Nachum from Chernobyl, the Me’ohr Einayim.

The chassid, of course, listened to his Rebbe. He ordered the horses to be hitched to his carriage, and traveled to Dovromishel, where the melamed was waiting for him. Given that he’d come a bit later than usual that year, the melamed was especially happy to see him.
Left with no choice, the merchant spent the night in the melamed’s house. When he woke up the next morning, he felt terrible. He was burning with fever and could barely get out of bed.
The doctor arrived and determined that the merchant was seriously ill with typhus.
Despite their efforts, on Rosh Hashanah, Devorah Leah grew sick and passed away on Gimmel Tishrei. Her father, the Baal HaTanya took in Devorah Leah’s young son, raising him with devotion. That child eventually grew up to be the Tzemach Tzedek, the third Rebbe of Lubavitch.
Concerned, the melamed quickly sent a telegram to St. Petersburg, asking for someone from the merchant’s family to come and help take care of him, and to notify the Tzemach Tzedek to daven for him.
*** One of the Tzemach Tzedek’s chassidim was a wealthy merchant who lived in St. Petersburg. Every year, the merchant would travel to the big city of Nizhny Novgorod for the annual fair. On his way, he would first stop off in Lubavitch to see the Rebbe. From there he would go to Dovromishel, a small town close to Lubavitch, to visit his former melamed, whom he would give a nice sum of money, before going on to Nizhny. One time the merchant was very caught up with his business, and he set out late on his trip to Nizhny. The fair had already started, but the man didn’t cancel his trip to Lubavitch. When he came to take leave of the Rebbe, however, he asked the Tzemach Tzedek, “Should I postpone going to Dovromishel and instead go straight to Nizhny?” “For years it has been your practice to go first to Dovromishel. Dovromishel was a small town that didn’t have a good doctor, so the melamed summoned a doctor from the nearby city of Orsha.
For eight weeks the merchant lay sick in the melamed’s house, until he finally regained his strength and was able to travel again.
The melamed rushed to put up a hot water urn in honor of his guest, but the merchant said, “Don’t put yourself out for me. I don’t have time to stay by you this time. I’m going to daven minchah and leave right away.” As the man got up to daven minchah, the sky filled with clouds, and it began to rain. “You may as well sleep over by me,” said the melamed. “It’s not like you can travel in rain like this.”
When the merchant left Dovromishel, he went to Lubavitch with a small grievance toward the Rebbe in his heart. I must have caught a cold on the way to Dovromishel, he thought, and that’s what caused me to get sick. If I would have gone straight to Nizhny, I would have been fine. Upon reaching the Rebbe’s room, the merchant started to cry. “Why did the Rebbe send me to Dovromishel?” he asked. “You would have gotten typhus anyway,” answered the Rebbe. “If you hadn’t been in Dovromishel, you would have died. Your melamed’s tefillos saved your life.”
“I really have to get to the fair,” the man insisted. But as they were talking, the man’s head started to hurt, and he mentioned this to the melamed.

Rikki, Avi, Debbie, and I spent an entire ten minutes agonizing over the mystery of the mezuzah parchment. It had seemed extremely important in the moment, but now that we were all together for the first time in many months, the youngsters, with their life enthusiasm, found it a hard topic to dwell on for too long. So I decided to put the issue into a little box in my head, lock it up with a key, and keep the key somewhere safe for future opening and reexamination. I could tell that my family didn’t share what they’d taken to calling my “obsession” with the guy next door, so there was no point in laboring the point, as it were.

For a time, things seemed to be manageable at the Felds. The kids had their friends round, and riotous socializing seemed to be going on, which we parents played ostrich to, as long as it didn’t involve trashing our furniture or too-loud music late at night. Which it seldom did. They were good kids. Rikki tended to go out with friends on endless shopping trips, and Avi hung around at home with his friends, laughing, eating, drinking, and learning together. Debbie continued her teaching in the evenings, and I went to the office every day as usual. We didn’t even see Xavier for a while. This, in my mind, was a good thing.

But then, one evening, as I was walking home from the tube tube station after work, I met one of my other neighbors, Moishe Green. He was also coming home from town, and we walked from the station together in a companionable way, discussing how our lives were going. After the usual platitudes about kids and how much noise they make (Avi) and how much money they cost (Rikki), Moishe blindsided me. “How are you getting on with your new neighbor, Xavier?” he asked me. As I was prepared to launch into what could have come dangerously close to lashon hora had Xavier been a Jew, he continued, “You’re lucky having him next door. Such a nice guy.” My mouth, which had been open, closed. Moishe continued. “I met him out in the street the other night,” he went on, “and we walked round the block a few times just chatting, you know? He’s a really good guy.” “What did you talk about?” I asked, trying to keep my voice casual, resisting the urge to tell him what I thought of Xavier. “Oh, he asked about Judaism and our customs and all of that. He was very curious about mezuzos. It was an interesting chat.” I bet it was, I thought. I said nothing. As I walked home, I saw Mr. Nakamura also walking home, briefcase in hand. I gave him a cheery wave and a toothy grin. Which beats a toothy wave and a cheery grin, but probably not by much. Mr. Nakamura didn’t respond in kind. He looked at me oddly and went up to his front door, letting himself in with a key. I stood there, feeling thwarted. Well, I’d done my bit, I told myself with a shrug.

When I got home, Debbie was waiting for me, looking anxious. I knew that look, and it wasn’t one you’d want to ignore. “What’s up?” I asked her as I put my case on my desk and put my hat and coat away. Then I noticed she had a piece of paper in her hand. “What’s that?” I asked, gesturing toward it. “It was on the mat with the mail,” she said, still clutching it as if she didn’t want me to see it yet. “But it’s got no stamp or postmark. I think it was delivered by hand. That means whoever sent it is close by. Nachman, this scares me more than if it had been posted from afar.” “Are you going to let me see it?” I asked. She relinquished the paper with extreme reluctance, as if a problem shared was a problem doubled rather than halved, as the saying goes. I opened the paper. It contained a single typed line. Your neighbor dangerous man.

It didn’t, so I handed it back to Debbie. “We should get it tested for fingerprints,” she said. “I mean, now it’s got mine and yours on it, but maybe it will also have the person’s who wrote it.” “It’s not threatening us, though,” I pointed out lamely. “Seriously,” Debbie said. “It’s warning us off Xavier, and we’ve been suspicious of him anyway. This confirms it.” “Still isn’t threatening us. This comes from someone who wants to protect us,” I said, even

more lamely, because the single line of type really didn’t feel like the writer wanted to protect us. “Maybe the writer wants us to pack up and move away so they can have our house,” Debbie said. She started to cry.
I listened, and now that she’d mentioned it, I could hear the thump, thump of the treadmill, with an accompanying thump, thump from Rikki’s mp3 player on full blast.
“Do you feel like you want to? Sell up and move away, I mean,” I said, trying to sound comforting.
“Okay,” I said, ignoring the jibe. “I’ll go to my study and check my emails. When’s dinner?”
“No! I want him to pack up and move away! Why should we have to? We’ve lived here since the kids were born. I’m not moving!”
Debbie, I should point out, is a feminist, and questions like “When’s dinner?” are likely to be met with answers like “Whenever you make it, dear.” However, tonight I think she was shaken up enough to appreciate her maiden-in-distress role, with me as the unfit, overweight knight in shining armor with a paunch to match, and so she just smiled and said it would be ready in half an hour, and could I please lay the table.
“I agree. If we move, Xavier has won. We’ll stay and fight him to the death if necessary!” Debbie shot me a look through her tears and mopped them up with several already-damp tissues. “No need to be so melodramatic, Nachman. And anyway, if you were pitched against him in battle, with your paunch compared to his six-pack, I don’t think there’d be much of a contest.” “You saying I’m not fit?” I asked, already knowing the diatribe about how I used the treadmill in the spare bedroom to hang clothing that needed to go to the cleaners. “I won’t justify that question with an answer,” Debbie said. “But thanks for your support anyway and wishing to be my knight in shining armor even if you’d be likely to get knocked off your white stallion at the first joust. I really do appreciate it.” I made one of those medieval flourishing bows that really required a hat with a large feather to get its full effect, but she giggled nonetheless. And so the moment passed. Just to be on the safe side, however, I asked Debbie to put the note in a plastic sandwich bag and keep it somewhere safe, in case we needed to test it for DNA or whatever those scenes-of-crime officers did. “Where are the kids?” I asked. “Avi is out heavens knows where. And Rikki — well, going back to my previous topic, if your ears were attuned to the noise of the treadmill even remotely, you’d hear where Rikki is. She’s on it. She’s a very keen keep-fit enthusiast.” Unlike someone else I could mention, was left hanging in

I didn’t dare voice my inner question of why Rikki couuldn’t do it. I was onto a loser there, and I knew it. I went into my study. I generally left my computer turned off when I was out, as I felt it needed a “rest,” even if that wasn’t technically true. It made me feel better knowing I wasn’t “wasting its strength.” Turning the computer on, I poured myself a glass of water from the machine in the corner and sat down just as it finished booting up. Then I clicked on my email account and waited for the day’s emails to download. The usual stuff, work emails that synced with my office. Charity requests. Something from my brother Zevi in Lakewood; I starred it to read later. And an email that had a lot of numbers instead of a proper email address with a name to it. I clicked on that one. At first I didn’t recognize what I was reading. My head refused to absorb it. Then, I realized that I was seeing a single line. In fact, the email address, with all its numbers, was longer than the actual content. Your neighbor spies for the enemy. Watch your back. To be continued…

SOS Esther’s eyes blurred with tears. Shana’s description of a forlorn little girl in an invisible jail rang so true. But it shocked her that her daughter perceived herself as abandoned by everyone. You never saw you never asked….How they had struggled to understand her and help her! But she never allowed anyone inside her “cell.” Like the captive in the poem, she seemed to “have no voice to call, no words to share.” Over the years, the family had gotten used to Shana’s idiosyncrasies. She was painfully shy and inhibited around people. Feelings easily overwhelmed her. She broke down in tears over any degree of disappointment, stress or frustration and couldn’t communicate to others what the trouble was. Advanced scholastically, she nevertheless had no idea how to engage in the simple amenities of routine conversation. It made her appear slow-witted, immature or as children labeled it, “weird.” First Grade Blues It had all started out so differently. “She was so cute and endearing when she was little--she had an amazing vocabulary, far beyond her age level,” Shana’s mother recalled. “When she piped up, you couldn’t help but smile. But trouble started as soon as she hit first grade.” As talkative and spirited as the little girl was at home with her parents and siblings, at school she seemed withdrawn and wrapped up in her own world. She daydreamed and doodled in class. At recess she wandered off by herself, gazing wistfully at the games others were playing. “At first we attributed her apartness to boredom,” her mother explained. “But that didn’t explain the other ‘oddities’—the extraordinary shyness, a stiff, awkward gait, not swinging her arms like most kids when they walk… and her difficulty in maintaining eye contact. She was always shy but this odd behavior seemed to have developed when she first stared mixing socially with other kids.” Shana resisted her parents efforts to arrange counseling for her. It wasn’t until she was in tenth grade that her parents induced her to cooperate with an evaluation. The child psychologist who evaluated Shana called in her parents to discuss his findings. Shana suffered from a neurological disorder called Asperger’s Syndrome, he said. They blinked at him in shock. What was Asperger’s Syndrome? Wanting Emotional Connection Until 1994, no one, including psychologists and behavior specialists, knew much about Asperger’s Syndrome. The disorder went unrecognized, and children who had it were simply labeled “weird,” “off-beat” or “emotionally disturbed.” Named for Hans Asperger, an Austrian physician who first identified it in the 1940’s, Asperger’s was first defined as a mild variant of autism, but that designation has been contested by many scientists who feel it is not part of the autism spectrum. “While some Asperger’s Syndrome symptoms seem similar to symptoms of classic autism,” psychologist Michelle Ver

Ploeg writes in Asperger’s Syndrome In Young Children, there are important differences. Asperger’s chidren and adults, unlike those afflicted with autism, often show true emotional connectedness, including an ability to empathize that is uncharacteristic of autism. The difficulties that students with Asperger’s Syndrome face reflect problems with nonverbal communication and the ability to draw social inferences, she explained. The social cues that guide most people through day-to-day interactions are a foreign language to them. Put simply, these children desperately want friends, but don’t know how to make or keep a friend. By contrast, those with autistic symptoms are emotionally remote and disconnected, for the most part incapable of a mutual, two-way relationship. Newly Diagnosed In 1994 It wasn’t until 1994 that Asperger’s Syndrome finally became an official diagnosis in standard American and British medical lexicons. Awareness of how this disorder impacted children began to filter down to educational channels. Schools finally had an approach to understanding those ‘odd’ students they’d been diagnosing with ADD, learning disabilities and bipolar disorder—all of which come with various symptoms that may mimic Asperger’s. Even today, Asperger’s Syndrome is not widely recognized by the public or by health care providers in this country. An estimated one out of every 1,000 people suffers from the syndrome. Much progress has been made in identifying children with the disorder, but there remain thousands of adults who were never correctly diagnosed. Asperger’s or “Aspies” as some humorously refer to themselves, generally have average to superior intelligence and—like Shana—advanced early language acquisition. However, they often seem to be “mind-blind” when it comes to social interactions—failing to perceive what is obvious to everyone else by “reading” body language, eye-gaze and facial expression. They may display an intense preoccupation with an unusual focus of interest, as well as repetitive behaviors such as rhythmic rocking or flapping of the hands. The Young Child A preschool aged child might demonstrate complete unawareness of the basics of social interaction—how to join a game or share toys or belongings. He or she may be oblivious to basic social cues—like waving hello and goodbye, smiling one’s pleasure, frowning or glaring to show displeasure—and may use these non-verbal messages totally inappropriately. Elementary School-Aged Child One often hears the phrase, “poor pragmatic language skills” in relation to children with Asperger’s. This means that the individual cannot hit on the right tone and volume of speech.

SOS Their voices are often flat and expressionless, too loud, or too high-pitched. The person may stand too close, avoid eye contact, or stare at people. Many are clumsy and have visualperceptual difficulties. Non-verbal learning difficulties, subtle or severe, are common, especially in reading comprehension and math work that demands imaginative problem-solving and critical thinking. The child may become fixated on a particular topic and bore others with incessant talk even when other children have given clear signals that they are not interested. Some have difficulties tolerating changes in their daily routine and become agitated when faced with an abrupt change in schedule. Change must be introduced gradually. The Adolescent: In adolescence, social demands become more complex and social nuances, more subtle. This may be the most difficult time for individuals with Asperger’s Disorder. They are so obviously “not with the program” that their behavior evokes ridicule, dismissal or annoyance from peers. Because of his social naiveté, a teenager with Asperger’s may not realize when someone is trying to take advantage of him. He can be especially vulnerable to manipulation and peer pressure. As individuals with Asperger’s enter adolescence, they become acutely aware of their differences and keenly sensitive to rejection. This may lead to depression and anxiety. The depression, if not treated, may persist into adulthood. TREATMENT FOR ASPERGER’S SYNDROME Social Skills Training This is one of the most vital components of treatment for all age groups with the disorder. According to experts in the field, the individual needs to learn body language with the thoroughness and consistency that one must learn a foreign language to cope with living in a foreign land. The individual with Asperger’s must learn concrete rules for eye contact, social distance and more normal body language, including posture and gait. Since many people with this disorder are clumsy and have terrible table etiquette, they must be taught how to conduct themselves at mealtimes without evoking distaste in those near them. Since they lack self-awareness and have trouble reading other people, “Aspies” do not realize that watching someone wolf down his food, eat noisily, or take second or third helpings when not everyone has had a first portion, can be upsetting. They need concrete lessons in identifying emotions (their own and others’); in practicing good hygiene, phone skills, car and bus decorum and how to win and lose. They need careful instruction on how to take care of personal attire; how to respect other’s ownership of belongings; how to make an appropriate gesture of affection, how to know when it’s inappropriate to give a hug or a pat on the back.
They need a great deal of practice and role-play regarding how to build a friendship; how to make conversation, how to share and to wait with patience; how to handle being upset; what constitutes lying; how to win and lose; how to be part of a discussion group or project. Avoid Criticizing, Ridiculing It’s easy (but a trap!) to turn social skill goals into a negative checklist of behaviors to be corrected. Don’t fall for this, warn experts. The idea is NOT to make life easier for the parent or teacher, the idea is to make life easier for the child. That is why the emphasis should be on explaining, teaching, and practicing, not criticizing, ridiculing or blindly correcting. It’s important to make the lessons fun, helpful, and nonthreatening. Use games, charades, jokes, cartoons, movies, story books, field trips, or whatever else works, so that the child will grow while feeling successful (as opposed to incompetent). Asperger’s covers a wide range of ability levels. Many children with Asperger’s can be included in mainstream classrooms. But those with a more severe case of the disorder will need to be in small, self-contained classrooms or special schools. Research shows that most children with Asperger’s learn intellectually rather than intuitively. Instead of role modeling or subtle hints, they need concrete information, explanations and practice. Shana first came to treatment in high school, after experiencing untold ordeals of social isolation and loneliness. She was fortunate in having a relatively mild form of Asperger’s and having the gift of being able to use the medium of writing to overcome her impairment in social skills and communication. On paper, she came alive—almost as a different person. Even her parents were astonished to discover what a vibrant life Shana led in her private writings. We helped her tap into this talent and convert it into a tool for becoming more in sync with those around her. We taught her to dig deep into herself and discover the emotions behind the “child’s mask” she had written about in her poem “If You But Dared.” We taught her to generalize these emotions to others. We helped her learn how to “read” facial expression and to interpret social situations through facial expression, tone of voice and body language. A rigorous program of social-skills training over many months concentrated on helping Shana maintain eye contact and learning how to initiate conversation with others. Perhaps the most heartening sign of Shana’s growth and progress came with a beautiful poem she wrote as she prepared to graduate high school. This poem had the same rhythmic cadence as her earlier one, but it couldn’t have been more different. This poem celebrated friendship. You felt the wind and sun and laughter in this poem. The tears it evoked were tears of happiness for the child who at last felt a part of humanity.

The fact that most classes were in German and somewhat of a challenge was surprisingly enjoyable for him, but adjusting to a classroom full of strangers was not. The boys in Vienna were more reserved and reticent than their American counterparts, but they were still clearly judgmental of his quiet personality. And jealous of his brains. “Schlaukopf,” Jake heard a boy call out one day after he quickly answered a complicated question on weather conditions their Science teacher, Herr Marcus, posed. Herr Marcus glanced disapprovingly at the boy, leading Jake to deduce that a schlaukopf probably meant “know-it-all,” a term he was used to from his days in Boston.

sure. What he was sure of, though, was that the boy jabbed him in the side as soon as the teacher had his back turned. Was school in Vienna going to be a repeat of school in Boston? A place with popular students, less-than-popular ones, and then less-than-less-than-less-than popular ones — a category that seemed to have been reserved just for Jake? Surprisingly, Eli seemed to take Jake’s overly studious temperament in stride. The fact that the two boys were stuck at the same desk all day seemed to create a unique bond between them, and, slowly, Jake began to relax into his role as Eli’s perceived sidekick or friend. “Amazing answers,” Eli whispered to Jake after he came back from his stint at the whiteboard. “Unbelievable that you were able to do all of that in German.” Math was the same in every language, Jake thought, but he was smart enough to hold his tongue and not utter that comment out loud. Jake’s restraint paid off, as later that day Eli asked if they could walk home together instead of each of them making their solitary way home to the same apartment building — or meeting up with one of their sisters along the way, as the girls’ school building was farther along the block from the boys’ school but still on the same campus. Joint walks to and from school soon became a common theme. Eli’s parents were busy at the embassy, and Jake’s parents were thrilled to have him walk with a personable and easygoing friend every day. *** About a week after Jake and Eli began walking to school together daily, the subject of Jake’s upcoming bar mitzvah came up at

the Greens’ dinner table. “Dad and I booked a hall today,” Mrs. Green announced, lifting a napkin to wipe Becky’s face clean of meatball sauce. “A nice and elegant place in the 10th district, and relatively small. We didn’t want a big hall where our lack of connections and friends here would stand out.” “We don’t have connections here?” Lillian asked. “I thought we know lots of people at the embassy, and there’s my whole class too…” “My class too,” Becky chimed in. Mrs. Green laughed. “We’ll have to discuss the list of invitees at a later date,” she said. “But for right now, let’s just say that not every person in Vienna will be at this party.” “Grandma and both Grandpas are coming in,” Mr. Green said, referring to his mother, father, and father-in-law. Jake’s other grandmother had passed away after a lengthy illness two years earlier. “Yay!” Lillian exclaimed. “I’m going to hang a calendar in my room until the party and start to mark down the days on it.” “There are still two and a half months left,” Jake said demurely, but he couldn’t stop a note of excitement from creeping into his voice. Twirling several pieces of pasta around on his plate, he turned to his father. “Dad, what exactly am I going to do at my party? Besides say hello to all the guests, I mean?” “Mom and I actually had that very same question,” Mr. Green said with a laugh. “Which is why we called your principal today to discuss the issue right after we finished booking the hall.” “Rabbi Marcus had a whole list of things for you to do,” Mrs. Green said. “Some of them are optional, some are not.”

Jake leaned forward. “Like what kinds of things?”
licking his lips. “Did you order a pair for me yet?”
Mrs. Green lifted her fingers one at a time. “Laying tefillin every day is not optional, apparently, but getting called up to the Torah on the Shabbos after your birthday to recite a blessing is. And even more optional than that is reading the entire Torah portion out loud in the synagogue that Shabbos.”
Mr. and Mrs. Green exchanged glances. “Um. No. Not yet,” Mr. Green said.
“I want to do all of those things,” Jake said quietly. “You do?” Mrs. Green said. “You do?” Lillian asked in surprise. “Do you realize how much work learning the Torah portion will take? The Torah is in Hebrew.” “Without vowels,” Mrs. Green added. Jake shrugged. “So what? I know how to read Hebrew. I’m good at languages.” And the fact that I’m good and not shy to show it is what gets me into trouble too much of the time, he thought but didn’t say. Still. He wanted to read his bar mitzvah Torah portion out loud. This was a once-ina-lifetime event, and he wanted to be fully present for it Eli. He’d be celebrating his bar mitzvah too this year. Maybe they could somehow learn their Torah portions together. “We’ll talk to Rabbi Marcus about getting you a bar mitzvah tutor, then,” Mr. Green said, rubbing his check in thought. “I didn’t realize that you’d want to go for the whole kit and caboodle, but if that’s what you really want, then we’ll probably need a special teacher for you — not just a basic package of two or three lessons to teach you how to lay tefillin.” “What about tefillin for me?” Jake asked,

“It looks like you’ll be putting them on every day in your school, so we’d better make sure that they’re a nice pair,” Mrs. Green added. Mr. Green laughed. “I don’t think there’s nice or less nice with these things — but we’ll definitely try to get you the best pair possible.” Jake looked at his parents. He remembered Rabbi Marcus mentioning something about different levels of kosher tefillin in his class on Jewish thought, but he didn’t think his parents would really understand the difference. Maybe Eli would, though. His family was religious, whereas the Greens were not. “We’re going to have to order a sushi and ramen bar,” Mrs. Green said. “Grandma’s definitely going to be on the lookout for one.” Jake looked at his mother. The idea of his bar mitzvah becoming just an ordinary party with less-appealing and more-appealing food choices suddenly seemed unattractive to him. It was the spiritual and intellectual aspects that interested him most. He definitely wanted to read his bar mitzvah parashah out loud. It made no difference what anyone else would say. But it would be nice to have Eli on board for such a project as well. Somehow, from their joint desk in school, Jake was slowly realizing that having a close friend could be enjoyable in so many ways. To be continued...

Caribous, of the deer family, are the only ones that have females with long, majestic, coiled antlers. Most of them live in icy Canada, in huge herds numbering up to a million caribou. As he does for each one of his creatures, Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave the caribou necessary features to survive. To combat the bitter cold, it has a thick coat of hair which covers its mouth and nose. During the hot summer months (even the arctic warms up for short while), when the female caribou is all of two years old, she travels many, many miles to a quiet, isolated spot with few predators. There, she gives birth to her 13 pound calf. Survival rates for calves average between 30% and 50%, but can vary from almost none to 100%. The most important factors for the calves survival are: good maternal nutrition, few predators, and pleasant weather. A caribou can run very quickly; 35-50 mph. At the young age of a day old, it can run faster than the quickest human. Why did Hakadosh Baruch Hu create it with that ability? In order to help it escape predators. Before the winter, the male loses its antlers, and during the summer it grows back, larger and more handsome than before. The female retains her antlers, and uses it to protect her children. Often, males engage in sparring matches with their antlers, (see photos at left) over a piece of territory.

One of the most amazing niflaaos haBorei is the migration of the caribou. Several herds of caribou travel over 3,000 miles and cover an area of close to 400,000 square miles to find grass to feed upon. Huge herds of caribou - between 50,000 and half a million - will travel between 15-35 miles a day non-stop, without a GPS or compass. Water, rivers, and even seas don’t stop the caribou. Swimming at an average of 4 mph, it is considered a good swimmer, and can swim more than 6 mph when necessary. Caribou have several enemies: wolves, bears, coyotes, American Lions and humans. They’ve all had a hand in reducing the caribou population over the past few years. Healthy caribou can run faster than all of their predators, including its worst enemy-the wolf. However, the wolf can catch up with young, weak, sick and healthy caribou that have tired of running. The caribou has large, wide feet which enable it to traverse deep snow and dig for food beneath the snow. It has a four-chambered stomach, and regurgitates its food. After swallowing its food, the caribou brings it back up to to its mouth and re-chews it. 732.930.2500

Ancient Timekeeping Believe it or not, for thousands of years humans have used various methods to measure time, none of which included digital clocks, wall clocks, or wristwatches. Some of the ingenious methods include the use of sundials, water clocks, candle clocks, and hourglasses.
Sundials
Early ancient civilizations most often relied on the sun and celestial bodies to mark the passage of time. The first scientific timekeeping tool was the sundial or shadow clock. It told time to the nearest hour by tracking the sun’s movement across the sky. The earliest sundials were believed to have been invented around 3500 BCE in Egypt, and while the earliest design may have begun with a simple stick in the ground to cast a shadow, it soon developed into a triangular pointer known as a gnomon (pronounced NO-mon), which stands in the center of a round dial etched with numbers. Over time, these tools became more sophisticated. The oldest discovered sundial dating to the thirteenth century BCE was unearthed in 2013 in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, the burial place of ancient Egyptian rulers. The sundial is made of a flattened piece of limestone, called an ostracon, with a black semicircle divided into twelve sections drawn on top. Small dots in the middle of each of the twelve sections, which are about fifteen degrees apart, probably helped to tell the time more accurately. There’s also a dent in the center where a metal or wood piece was most likely placed. When the sun hit it, the shadow would show the time of day.
Cand le Clocks Can you picture using a candle to know when to wake up?! Ancient Chinese society measured time with a specially made candle that burned at a consistent rate. The first recorded reference was in 520 CE in a Chinese poem that described six uniform candles of equal weight and thickness, each twelve inches tall. The candles were marked in sections of one inch. Every inch of the candle took twenty minutes to melt, so one whole candle lasted four hours. These candles were kept in special holders to protect the flame. This was an awesome way to track time, especially when you couldn’t see the sun.
Water Clocks These early timekeepers, like the candle clock, didn’t depend on the sun. One of the oldest of these clocks was discovered in the tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh Amenhotep I, and it supposedly dates to around 1500 BCE! The water clock, also known as the clepsydra, is a timekeeping device that uses the steady flow of water to measure time’s passing. It typically consists of a container with a small hole near the bottom, allowing water to escape at a constant rate. As the water level goes up or down, markings on the container indicate how many hours have passed, giving a clear visual of time passing. The ancient Greeks and Arabs improved the water clock by adding gears and weights. This upgrade paved the way for more complex timekeeping devices like the pendulum clock, which made its debut in Europe during the fourteenth century.
Hourglass With this timekeeping device, two glass bulbs connected vertically by a narrow neck allow a regulated trickle of material, usually sand, from the upper bulb into the lower one. In olden times, hourglasses were common among sailors. Historical records tell us that eighteen hourglasses from Barcelona, Spain, were in the ship’s inventory during Ferdinand Magellan’s epic voyage around the world in 1519. A page aboard the ship had the job to flip the hourglasses and record the times in the ship’s log. Sounds like fun, no? Interestingly, hourglasses are still in use today. Think of the ones that come in kids’ games such as Boggle. More importantly, some institutions maintain these devices as well. For example, the Australian Parliament use three hourglasses to time certain procedures.

Moving on in Time… As the world changed and grew more sophisticated, time-telling methods didn’t lag far behind. As Pharaohs and mummies gave way to lordships and knights, ancient time-telling devices progressed to more mechanical methods, which eventually led to the modern wall clock as we know it today.
The first of the more modern timepieces relied on a system of gears, springs, and moving parts. These measured and displayed the passage of time without relying on electricity or electronic components, and came into being during the Middle Ages. Some mechanical clocks included striking mechanisms that produced audible sounds, like bells or chimes, to indicate time. Medieval monasteries were the first to adopt these marvels as they rang bells to signal prayer times. Soon enough, many town squares were adorned with impressive clock towers, each one a masterpiece of craftsmanship.
As the world expanded and people began to travel further distances, the need for portable timepieces grew. That’s when the small, elegant clock that could be carried anywhere, the pocket watch, began to appear. The pocket watch was a timepiece that folks could carry around in their pocket or attached to a chain. It came in a small case, with a cover that could be opened to check the time and was often worn as a stylish accessory.
There’s a wellknown short story called The Gift of the Magi written by O. Henry in 1905 involving a young man’s pocket watch. The story goes that there was a young couple who was very poor but wanted to buy each other a present. The wife sold her long, beautiful hair to buy her husband a chain for his treasured pocket watch, while he sold his pocket watch to buy her a set of combs for her hair. When they presented their gifts to each other, they realized that the gifts were of no use. Nevertheless, they learned a valuable lesson, that the most precious gift of all was their deep devotion to each other…
Eventually, pocket watches evolved into wristwatches, and everyone from the very young to the very old can wear them these days. From watches on Amazon for under five dollars to the Graff Diamonds Hallucination watch with a price tag of $55 million, there’s most definitely a watch for everyone.

One of the oldest of these clocks — known as astronomical clocks — is the Prague Astronomical Clock, which was first installed in 1410. Officially known as the Great Bell, this clock is part of the famous clock tower at the Palace of Westminster in London, England, which today is used as the House of Parliament. Although it might seem odd, the cuckoo clock is an intricate work of art, often handmade in remote European villages. Traditionally, it features a tiny model cuckoo bird that pops out and calls the hour. These charming clocks have a fascinating history. In the eighteenth century, farmers in Germany crafted them during the winter months, using logs from the Black Forest. The cuckoo clocks were a source of income during these months that their farms lay fallow. Although the exact origin of the first cuckoo clock is unknown, it’s generally believed to have originated in this area.
Are you a “words” person or a “numbers” person? Usually, “number people” are in their element when it comes to tracking time. But there’s also a clock for all the wordies out there. It’s called the Word Clock, and instead of showing numbers, it spells out the time with illuminated words.

Grandfather Clocks No article on clocks would be complete without mentioning the king of all clocks, or, rather, the granddaddy of them — the grandfather clock! Grandfather clocks were originally called “longcase clocks,” which makes more sense than their current name. After all, they’re a long case, with the upper half containing the face of the clock, and the chiming pendulum in the lower half. These beautiful pieces are terrific timekeepers, but have you ever wondered where the name “grandfather clock” came from? According to legend, a man by the name of Henry Clay Work, an American songwriter, was visiting England. Work noticed a large pendulum clock in the hotel lobby where he was staying and asked the manager about its history. He was told that the clock had belonged to the hotel’s previous owners, the Jenkins brothers, who had since passed away. Supposedly, the clock was in perfect working order until the first brother died, when it suddenly started to become less accurate. When the second brother died, it stopped working entirely. Whether the current owner had made up the tale, Work never found out, but he loved the story anyway, and in 1876 he wrote a song he called “My Grandfather’s Clock” based on it. The song became so popular that the name caught on, and the clocks previously known as “longcase clocks” now became known as “grandfather clocks.”
The Future of Timekeeping Looking back at the innovative route timekeeping has traveled, it’s obvious that ways to keep time will continue to evolve. Smartwatches now track our every move and even monitor our health, while traditional watches remain timeless symbols of craftsmanship and style. But as we look ahead, we know one thing for sure: time continues to march on. It never stops. And that’s the good news, because as long as we have time, we have opportunity. So savor each moment and keep on watching with excitement as the clock of life ticks on.

My friend had come to hang out on a Shabbos afternoon. We played for a while, until it was time for her to leave. When we came to the door, we saw it was raining outside and she lived too far to go home in the rain with no jacket or coat. I decided to lend her one of my jackets. she took it and left. A few weeks later I went to her house. When it was time for me to walk home there was a surprise! It was raining! I couldn’t walk in the rain. But there was a solution. My jacket! She still had it from the time I lent it to her when it was raining a few weeks ago. I guess she never got around to returning it to me, but here it was waiting to be used! For the same exact reason that I had lent it to her. I was able to walk home dry and happy! Thank you Hashem that this was arranged so perfectly perfect!

Yemenite Zechug I have an Ashkenazi background, but I think I was born with a Yemenite stomach. I can eat this classic Yemenite hot sauce like ketchup. For years I had to eat this dip alone — until my youngest son-in-law arrived on the scene. We now have who-can-take-the-heat contests at the Shabbos table.
Ingredients 1 cup
Fresh cilantro leaves, packed
3–8
Cloves of garlic (adjust according to your personal preference)
Green chili peppers (choose based on your desired heat level), Seeds and stems removed For a mild version use 2–3 mild green chili Peppers of the Anaheim or banana pepper variety For a medium version use 2–4 medium Green chili peppers of the serrano pepper variety For a spicy version use 6–8 spicy green Chili peppers of the jalapeño or Thai bird’s Eye pepper variety ½ tsp
Ground cumin (optional)
½ tsp
Ground coriander (optional) Juice of 1 lemon (2–3 TBSP) Salt, to taste
2–5 TBSP Olive oil (adjust for desired consistency)
Instructions 1. Place the cilantro, garlic, and your choice of green chili peppers into a food processor or blender. 2. Pulse until the mixture becomes a coarse paste. (If using spicy peppers, keep your face away; the mixture can sting your nostrils.)
3. Add ground cumin, ground coriander, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt to the mixture, pulsing once more.
4. Remove from the blender and stir in olive oil. 5. Adjust the seasoning with more salt or lemon juice as necessary. (I like this more on the salty side.) Enjoy! 98

Super Simple Yeshivish Arabische Dip I was introduced to this simple yet yum dip while cooking at the Mir in Yerushalayim. Of course, instead of the tubs of tomatoes we used there, the recipe below is a scaled-down family-friendly version.
Ingredients 4–5
ripe tomatoes
4–6
cloves of garlic, chopped
¼ cup
neutral-tasting oil (such as canola or vegetable oil)
½–1 tsp
salt, or to taste
¼–½ tsp black pepper, or to taste
Instructions 1. Prepare the tomatoes by washing them thoroughly and removing the stems. Then cut them into chunks.
2. In a blender or food processor, combine the cut tomatoes with the chopped garlic.
3. Season the mixture with salt and black pepper. Start with ½ a teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper. You can always add more later.
4. With the blender or food processor still running, slowly drizzle in the neutral-tasting oil. Continue blending until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency.
5. Taste the dip and adjust the salt and pepper as needed, staying within the recommended range.
6. Allow the blended dip to rest on the counter for about 15–30 minutes so that the flavors meld and develop. Store in the refrigerator afterward, but beware of the dip’s tendency to firm up. A quick stir before serving will soften it again. Enjoy!
