Working toward a specific mission as opposed to getting there… These are some of the themes that you’ll read about in this week’s Lakewood Vibes, apropos to Parashas Lech Lecha and Avraham and Sara’s journey. And, of course, you will also read a piece on the war in Eretz Yisroel which is in all of our tefillos. I once heard it said that most people don’t live up to their full potential. I thought I’d heard numbers like 70 percent actualization and 30 percent left in potential, but in researching those numbers to write this article, I couldn’t find them. Instead, I found references to a statement — most often attributed to Albert Einstein — in which a scientist referenced using only 10 percent of his brain. Today, this statement has been widely disproven. Instead, what remains of the statement is the obvious notion that most people don’t realize their full potential (be that potential another 30 percent, another 90 percent, or even another 1 percent). Much as we may be doing, there’s always more that we can be doing. This very Jewish idea of yegi’ah (labor or effort) was recently driven home to me when I noticed, one morning, that my gold bracelet had torn. Dozens of tiny gold beads had popped off, nestling themselves in the various crevices spread throughout my room. Immediately, two thoughts crossed my mind: A) I could pay a jeweler a decent sum of money to replace the missing gold beads of my bracelet, or B) I could scour my room for the tiny pieces — and save myself a pretty penny. For the sake of honesty, let’s just say I’m not the type of person who would generally act upon option B. Getting down on the floor and scouring my room for something so tiny is not
my idea of time well spent — even if it could potentially save me money. In fact, I’m the type of person who’s most likely to come up with an option C at some point: Forget about the bracelet completely and move on to another one. But somehow, something inside of me — maybe that latent 30 percent (or is it 90 percent?) — urged me to give the search a try. To challenge myself and see if I could uncover any beads. I got down on my hands and knees. One piece… Two pieces… Three… Somehow, I managed to collect those beads with an ease that surprised me (and no, they didn’t sparkle and jump out at me — this was wholly about grit and determination). After only twenty minutes of searching, I had collected a whopping thirty-five gold beads! A fine sum of money. And a nice actualized.

That I could potentially do other things that I’d deemed myself incapable of due to my many (mistaken) beliefs was the lesson to me in that search. Let’s keep our greater goals in mind, remember that we’re capable of more than we think — and recall that life is about doing our best. As the Gemara tells us: “Rabbi Yitzchak said, ‘If a person says to you, “I have labored and not found,” do not believe him. [If he says to you,] “I have not labored, but I have found,” do not believe him. [If, however, he says,] “I have labored, and I have found,” believe him.’ ” (Megillah 6b) Life’s all about that labor and effort.

Parashas Lech Lecha begins with Avraham Avinu’s test to leave his familiar hometown and move to Eretz Canaan. Avraham Avinu grew up in a home and community steeped in avodah zarah. His father, Terach, was the leader of the nonbelievers!

The Nesivos Shalom states that Avraham was able to recognize Hashem and reach the epitome of emunah not despite his circumstances but because of them. He explains that every person comes into this world for a specific mission, to fix something unique to him. To fulfill our purpose, we’re given the precise surroundings, people, and time frame that we need.
These words contain a message for all of us. Our difficult circumstances enable us to reach our potential. Sometimes we blame our upbringing, surroundings, or the people in our lives for our inability to change. The truth, however, is that our difficulties have been personalized for us and are the circumstances we need to fulfill our mission.
In the words of the Nesivos Shalom, this is the message Hashem was telling Avraham when he said, “Lech Lecha”:
A story is told about Rav Meir Abuchatzeira, the Baba Sali’s son, who lived in Morocco until he was forty-eight years old. People leaving Morocco for Eretz Yisrael would usually come to the rav first and ask him to bless their journey with success.

encouraged the man, telling him that he would find parnasah and be able to support his family even without being able to speak or read the language. His unique challenge, Rav Meir explained, was what would lead to his success. When the man reached Eretz Yisrael, his son, who was working in a highlevel security office, told him they were looking to hire a worker who couldn’t read or write Hebrew to destroy sensitive military-related documents. For thirty years, this man worked successfully in that office. He then retired, but even afterward he was called back to continue working because no one could be found to replace him. He received a double salary as a result, and the salary included both his pension and regular weekly wages. This man was able to live comfortably in Eretz Yisrael, his life’s journey progressing specifically because of his tailor-made difficulty. The parashah continues with Avraham Avinu leaving Eretz Yisrael for Mitzrayim due to the hunger that plagued the land. On his way, he turned to Sarah with a request that she tell the Egyptians that she was his sister. Avraham prefaced his request with the following words: “— הנה נא ידעתי כי אשה יפת מראה את Behold now I know that you are a woman of fair appearance” (Bereishis 12:11). The word הנהthat appears in the pasuk is usually used in reference to something new. Here too — as Avraham suddenly became aware of Sarah’s beauty midway through their journey.

Rashi, quoting the Midrash, writes that it in general, the hardship of travel causes a person to become unattractive ()מתבזה, but here Sarah remained beautiful. I heard in the name of the Vilna Gaon that the word מתבזה, unattractive, can be translated as “disgraced” or “embarrassed,” as its root is the word בזיון. A trip has an element of disgrace. It represents human weakness. Hashem created us so that we must travel to get to where we want. We, however, don’t want to expend energy getting there; we want to have arrived. It takes time to reach our destination, and that’s annoying. Our journey is thus a disgrace, meaning, it is full of our frustration over having to spend time getting to where we want to go. Think about the most common questions on a road trip: “When are we going to be there?” and “How much longer?” Our frustration makes us forget to enjoy the journey. This is a mistake, because the trip itself is very important. To skip that part of the experience is a shame. Often, in hindsight, what we remember most from a trip is the time we spent with our travel companions or family — even more than the destination. When Avraham Avinu moved with Sarah to Canaan, the pasuk says: ויקח אברם את — שרי אשתוAnd Avram took Sarai his wife” (Bereishis 12:5). According to the Zohar, the word ויקח means that Avraham convinced Sarah to come with him and didn’t take her by force. Sarah moved with Avraham to Eretz Yisrael, and shortly afterward, due to the hunger, Avraham took her to Mitzrayim.

Moving from the familiar to the unfamiliar is stressful. Moving again shortly after can create great tension in a relationship. Sarah could have easily complained or resisted. She was taken on a difficult trip and yet, on that trip, she remained beautiful and reached her destination with grace and beauty — without the frustration and annoyance that usually accompanies a long journey. She achieved this state of beauty through emunah, the understanding that every part of the way was a crucial element of her mission. She truly believed that every step was important and not random, and she thus didn’t look frustrated or drained when she arrived at her next stop. She understood that every detail was planned precisely by HaKadosh Baruch Hu. It was this beauty that Avraham Avinu discovered in Sarah. He was concerned that the world would notice it too, and be impressed by it. Rabbi Paysach Krohn tells a story about a woman with cancer whose son asked, ”Ma, why you? You’re such a tzadeikes. Why do you deserve this sickness?“ To which the mother responded, “My dear son, when I got engaged the first in my class, did I ask, ‘Why me?’ When I gave birth to my first child, did I ask, ‘Why me?’ As the family continued growing, did I question Hashem? So now, how can I ask, ‘Why me?’ “ I am privileged to work with seniors in my community. The other day, Shoshana — a woman who is battling liver cancer and is in and out of treatments — shared her experiences waiting for treatments. She said that once, while in the hospital

waiting room, she met a Jewish girl who’d woken up the morning of her wedding unable to see. This girl’s family doctor sent her directly to the emergency room, where she was immediately sent for specialized treatment. The girl’s grandmother begged Shoshana to be present at her granddaughter’s side during treatment to encourage her, as Shoshana’s sense of humor and deep acceptance of HaKadash Baruch Hu’s plan is contagious. When I asked Shoshana how she manages to stay in this positive frame of mind, she told me that while undergoing an MRI, she can feel what’s going on around her or she can choose to concentrate on each of her twenty-three grandchildren. She admitted that doing so is not easy but ”I embrace the process. It’s not about what will be at the end. It’s about living in the moment and using one’s gifts to better the world.” She’s using her circumstances and unique capabilities to fulfill her life’s mission. As we travel through life, we chose between disgrace or remaining beautiful. Life is a process. It’s not only about reaching the destination. Our trip is important and precious, and we’ve all been granted the tools and circumstances we need to embrace our journey. “We were hoping for a larger donation,” the holy brothers said, and so the servant ushered them into his master’s inner chambers.
“How will your mussar help?” Reb Shmelke asked. “The people here don’t listen to rebuke at all.”
Upon seeing Reb Elimelech, the wife fainted, creating an uproar in the household.
But Reb Elimelech begged Reb Shmelke to let him try, and Reb Shmelke finally relented.
The audience was pleased. The next day, almost all the Jews of Nikolsburg packed into the shul to hear Reb Elimelech speak again. This time, Reb Elimelech started tearing apart his previous speech, showing how it was forbidden to violate even the most minor issur d’Rabbanan. He spoke with heartfelt conviction, and his words penetrated his listeners’ hearts.
disappointment, he couldn’t find a single Jew to bless, and the time period was about to draw to an end. “Hashem, You gave me the ability to give berachos,” he cried, “but who will I give them to?” Just then, a Jewish woman walked into the field that Reb Elimelech was in. He rushed over to her and started to bless her, but she recoiled in suspicion. REB Elimelech reassured the woman, inquired about her welfare, and then blessed her and went on his way.
“This is exactly what our Rebbe, Reb Shmelke, has been saying all along,” the people of Nikolsberg told each other. “It’s a shame we didn’t listen to him. We now need to beg him for forgiveness.”
After the woman’s return home, she told her husband that a strange man had given her a berachah in the field. This couple then went on to become wealthy businesspeople and assumed that the strange man had been Eliyahu HaNavi.

Years passed. Reb Elimelech and his brother Reb Zusha of Anipoli were traveling to collect money for pidyon shevuyim when they heard about a big philanthropist in Nikolsburg and journeyed there. Upon reaching the philanthropist’s house, the servant offered them a gold coin.
Reb Elimelech traveled to Nikolsburg and asked Reb Shmelke for permission to give the people there mussar.
A large crowd gathered in the shul to hear Reb Elimelech’s speech, and Reb Elimelech gave a derashah “proving” all kinds of heterim and kulos.

I’m a simple Jew who gave you a berachah, and, baruch Hashem, it came true.” Hearing this, the husband offered to give them the entire sum that they needed. “Thank you, but we can’t accept your offer,” the holy brothers said. “We want to let other Jews have the zechus as well.” In the end, Reb Elimelech and Reb Zusha agreed to accept half the amount, and they left the man’s house with great honor. Reb Menachem Nachum Kaplan Reb Nachumke of Horodna (1811–1879) Shira Yael Klein
Reb Nachumke Kaplan from Horodna (also known as Grodno) was a tzaddik whom the Chafetz Chaim greatly respected. He was always busy giving tzedakah and doing chesed. One day, Reb Nachumke needed one hundred and fifty rubles for the mitzvah of pidyon shevuyim. A certain Jew needed to be rescued immediately, and Reb Nachumke took inventory of his possessions, but saw that he had nothing that he could sell.

The gvir tried to see if Reb Nachumke could get a loan from someone else, but when the tzaddik declared that he’d already borrowed money from everyone he could, the gvir agreed to lend him the money. “But,” he stipulated, “I really need it back before my trip.” Grateful to be able to redeem a Jew, Reb Nachumke ran happily to perform the mitzvah. But the next day, he started to worry. How am I going to get such 28

“I’m a believer in hashgachah pratis,” concluded Reb Nachumke. “Hashem is the ruler of the world, and He will surely help me.” Reb Nachumke finished speaking, and the gvir left the area. Moments later, two men came over to Reb Nachumke, handing him 140 rubles.
Rushing to a gvir he knew, Reb Nachumke asked for a loan. “Please,” he said, “I promise to return the sum very soon.”
“Don’t ask her! She might stop us from doing this mitzvah!” Reb Nachumke said. “Give me the money, and I offer you my solemn promise that I will return the full amount to you by tomorrow noon.”
He will indeed perform miracles. If, however, he thinks that life is governed by the laws of nature and happenstance, Hashem will abandon him to natural forces, and he will not merit major salvation.
“Can I use the money?” Reb Nachumke asked.

After telling the amazed gvir what had happened, Reb Nachumke asked him not to publicize the matter, because berachah is only found amongst that which is hidden. He thinks it’s the instructions.” Avi barked an instantaneous laugh. “Shhh!” I said urgently. “I don’t want your sister to have any suspicion as to what you’re up to, or she might give the game away even without meaning to. And Xavier Roberts is a very distrustful man.” Avi tried to look serious and failed. “It’s a klaf from a mezuzah!” I said piously. “Okay, Dad. I’ll try, but somehow I think he’s going to wonder why I’m in the kitchen while he and she are in the living room or whatever.” “I’m sure she can distract him with chat,” I said. I wasn’t sure at all, but it was the only plan I had up my sleeve at that moment. We emerged from my study looking as wide-eyed and innocent as a couple of axe murderers. But as they were as thick as thieves, the two of them, somehow I doubted it. “Come on, Rikki, let’s go say hello to our neighbor,” Avi said. Even the stupidest interrogator would instantly twig that he had another agenda besides being neighborly. Rikki put her arm through her brother’s, and off they went. I resisted the temptation to follow them, or even to curtain-twitch from the window that faced the outside. Instead, I just paced. And paced. “You know you’re being ridiculous, don’t you?” Debbie said, coming into the living room and seeing me pacing while trying not to appear as if I were attempting to look out of the window at the same time. “It’s dustbin collection day!” I said emphatically, sure that would make her realize the rightness of my stance. “Okay, I hear you on that one,” Debbie said. “But they don’t usually come for another hour or two, so calm down.” I heard the “calm down” bit somewhere in my subconscious, but it made very little inroads. I continued pacing. Caged tigers had nothing on my pacing skills; they could learn a thing or two from me. After another ten minutes, our two kids emerged from Xavier’s house and made their way back to ours. I surpassed myself in body-language reading as I watched them return. “They got it,” I said triumphantly. “I can tell. You’ll see.”

Debbie shot me a “so much for the I-cantell look,” but said nothing, mercifully enough. “He said he threw it away, but he wouldn’t let us try and find it.” Rikki said. “He said it was ridiculous for us to rifle though his bins,” Avi said. “And he couldn’t see what the fuss was all about.” Debbie folded arms decisively.

Debbie reappeared, waving something triumphantly. She looked like Neville Chamberlain waving his so-called peace treaty with Hitler in 1939. Yeah, and we all know what good that did. I opened the door. “You got it?” I asked. “I got it,” she crowed. “I told you I would.” “Where was it?” I asked, without looking at it properly yet, I was so eaten up with jealousy that she had succeeded where the rest of us had failed. “Oh, not sure. He went into his study when I came, saying he thinks it’s in there somewhere, and then he came out with it a few minutes later.” She handed it to me. “You see? I told you I could get it.” The paper was a piece of simple printer paper. Quartered and cut with scissors from an A4 sheet about a minute or two ago. “This isn’t it,” I said, feeling ridiculously pleased. “Unless the Bernsteins had this in their mezuzah, which I very much doubt, he’s still got the original somewhere.” And he’d photocopied that original and given a copy to Debbie. He had the original still. Question was, why?

Books, newspapers, and magazines argue that our children are going through a “friendship crisis.” While our children’s relationships are definitely different than when we grew up, in reality, I don’t believe we are facing a friendship crisis. In reality, we are facing a bullying crisis that has permeated our community. A national survey reported that over forty percent of students say that they are afraid to go to a school bathroom because of bullying. One in seven children in America reports acting as a bully or a bully victim. Every day, 160,000 students skip school because they fear violence or intimidation. In places where the internet is used for social networking, students describe cyberbullying through name calling and verbal attacks.

SOS Do we have a friendship crisis? Probably not. Do we have a bully crisis? Definitely. How do we address the bullying crisis? First, you need to recognize if your child is a victim of bullying. Below are some telltale signs: • Returns home from school with torn, damaged, or missing clothing • Seems afraid of going to school • Suddenly begins to do poorly in school • Complains frequently of headaches, stomachaches, or other illnesses. • Has trouble sleeping or frequent bad dreams • Appears anxious or suffers from low selfesteem HOW TO STOP THE BULLYING CYCLE : Talk to your child Tell your child that you are concerned about them and that you would like to help them. You can ask direct questions such as, “Are there any kids at school who treat you meanly?” Or indirect questions such as, “Are there any kids at school who you really don’t like? Why?” Broaching the topic is the first step towards prevention. Keep your emotions in check Of course, you need to empathize with your child, but if you become overly emotional, your child will hesitate before talking to you about it again. Stay calm so that you can act as a supportive figure in your child’s life. Talk to the staff at your child’s school Set up an appointment and explain that you are concerned. Ask questions about what you can do and what measures the school can take to prevent bullying. If you are not comfortable talking to your child’s teacher, make an appointment with a principal or the school’s guidance counselor. Teach your child to walk with conf idence
from the situation, he is signaling to the bully that the bully cannot hurt him. Encourage other f riendships. Promote true friendships by telling your child to invite other children for play dates or study dates. And, after we address the bullying crisis, we teach children how to make long lasting relationships. Because research shows that children do need friends, however, they do not need tons of friends nor do they need friends to surround them 24/7. Through a child’s interactions with even these one or two friends, he will develop necessary social skills. But, what if your child does not even have one or two friends? Is there a way that you as a parent can help them out? Well, the answer is yes and no. Your child has to want to make friends, but once the desire is there, you can definitely aid them in their quest for friendship. I’d also like to take a minute to discuss what I mean by friendship. For different ages, friendship means different things. In Preschool (one month to four years) children are observing social interactions to see how to behave in the future. Other children who they get along with and they spend a lot of time with are considered friends at this age. Next, in Early Elementary (five to six years), friends are mostly based on convenience and change abruptly. Children will often change “best friends” weekly at this age. Then, Middle Childhood (seven to ten years), Children begin to choose their friends based on compatibility and shared interests. Friendships at this stage are based heavily on loyalty. The last stage of childhood friendship, I will call the Transitional years (ten to twelve): Right before their teenage years, children are starting to recognize changes in their bodies and thoughts. They have a strong sense of self and look for friends who will complement their strengths.

The fact that thousands upon thousands are beginning this new limud and gaining a better, deeper understanding of what they learn is a tremendous tikkun,” exclaimed HaGaon HaRav Dovid Cohen, shlita, venerated Rosh Yeshiva of Chevron in a unique shiur pesicha that he gave to Masechta Brachos in honor of Klal Yisrael’s new Amud HaYomi program that began this past Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan with Daf Beis Amud Aleph of Masechta Brachos. Rav Dovid Cohen was not the only gadol to deliver a pesicha shiur. In light of the precarious security situation in Eretz Yisrael precipitated by the ongoing war with Hamas, large gatherings to mark the momentous beginning of a new, transformative limud were not feasible. Rather, small shiurei pesicha were given by numerous Gedolei Yisroel. Attendees and speakers at the pesicha given by Rav Dovid Cohen included HaGaon HaRav HaRav Nisson Kaplan, shlita, and Hagaon HaRav Yisroel Yitzchok Zilberman, shlita. Other pesicha shiurim were given by HaGaon HaRav Avigdor Nebenzahl, shlita, venerated Rav of the Old City of Yerushalayim; the Rachmastrivka Rebbe, shlita; the Boyaner Rebbe, shlita; HaGaon HaRav Messoud Ben Shimon, shlita, Sefardic Rav of Bnei Brak; HaGaon HaRav Avrohom Salim, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Meor HaTorah; HaGaon HaRav Shraga Shteinman, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Orchos Torah; HaGaon HaRav Yaakov Meir Stern, shlita, talmid muvhak of Rav Shmuel Wosner, zt”l; HaGaon HaRav Chaim Peretz Berman, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva at the Ponovezh Yeshiva and numerous others.
Not a Replacement for Daf HaYomi, Amud HaYomi Complements it Upon conclusion of his intricate shiur pesicha on the first blatt in Masechta Brachos, Rav Dovid Cohen remarked, “I want to clarify one thing, the Amud HaYomi is not necessarily a limud that comes in place of the Daf HaYomi. Rather, it is a track for those who find the Daf HaYomi difficult. The Daf HaYomi is something that remains the eternal inheritance of Klal Yisrael. It is a great matana that Rav Meir Shapiro gave to Klal Yisrael. Fortunate is the one who is able to learn the daf! Unfortunately, however, there are many who cannot learn the daf for various reasons. The Amud HaYomi is not, in any way, coming to infringe on that legacy. People who are learning the Daf HaYomi properly, the Amud HaYomi can be a great chazarah tool to review and retain what one learns. Thus, in a way, the Amud HaYomi is also a continuation of the legacy of Rav Meir Shapiro. It enables people to learn a certain amount every day, weekday, Shabbos and Yom Tov and complete Shas. Yes, it will take fourteen years, but for those who need the time to properly understand and retain, it is an amazing gift to Klal Yisrael,” Rav Cohen concluded. Rav Messoud Ben Shimon instituted the learning of Amud HaYomi in his yeshiva, as the bekius learning for night seder. “If we learn the amud properly,” he said, “and institute both a chazarah and testing schedule I think there will be an amazing toeles in the learning.”
Shiurei pesicha were also held in America with prominent speakers such as HaGaon HaRav Hillel David, shlita, Yoshev Rosh of the Vaad Roshei Yeshiva of Torah Umesorah, a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah, and Rav of Kehillas Yeshiva Shaarei Torah; HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Eisenberger, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Telshe; and Rav Dovid Hofstedter, shlita, Nasi Dirshu.
Indeed, Rav Avrohom Salim, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Meor HaTorah and a member of the Shas Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah said, “Now Klal Yisrael finds itself in a great tzarah. We all know that Torah protects and saves. There are two components needed at a time like this. The component of Torah, learning Torah and the component of tefillah, davening and crying out to Hashem to save us. We need so much tefillah now, but one of the difficulties that we encounter is that it is difficult to daven or say Tehillim all day. It is difficult to maintain the hisorerus even when we are supposed to daven. The Amud HaYomi can be the Torah that is in place of tefillah.”
A New Level of Success!
“A Kabbalah Tova is Considered Complete by Hashem”
The Amud HaYomi has taken off successfully at a level that even surprised the hanhala of Dirshu, the organization that has established and organized this new limud for Klal Yisrael.
HaGaon HaRav Binyomin Finkel, shlita, Mashigach of the Mir Yeshiva of Yerushalayim, encapsulated the importance and beauty of the Amud HaYomi especially during this difficult time for Klal Yisrael when he said, “It is important to note that Mashiach is coming very soon. When he comes, Hashem will test us on the entire Torah. I don’t know what mark we are going to get… We have started the Amud HaYomi today. I know the first Mishnah, the first amud, but what will come after that…? I will tell you. The Amud HaYomi is our hatzalah. Even if Mashiach will come tomorrow, the very fact that we have started, that we have accepted upon ourselves to learn an amud every day, not just superficially but to really invest time and effort to understand, that kabbalah tova is considered by Hashem as if we have completed it. Mashiach can come tomorrow, and he will greet every one of us as Shas Yidden! Hashem knows we started because we want to know Shas.
Nearly 600 new shiurim have opened across the world, with more than 100 new shiurim in America alone. Well over 50,000 people worldwide have joined and started Shas with this new Amud HaYomi cycle. 187 chaburos and kollelei erev have already adopted the new Amud HaYomi as their limud. Access to world renowned Amud HaYomi maggidei shiur is available on major platforms such as Kol Halashon, All Daf, Torah Anytime, Dirshu Global and Dirshu’s dedicated Amud HaYomi hotline. Another important aspect of the Amud HaYomi launch is the fact that it took place at a very precarious time for Klal Yisrael. Numerous Gedolei Yisrael pointed out that it is certainly not a coincidence that at this difficult time for Klal Yisrael when we so desperately need the zechusim and koach of Torah, so many tens of thousands of Yidden are accepting to immerse themselves in a new daily limud. Undoubtedly, the zechus of Torah has the power to save us at this perilous time. Three Shuls, Three Times of Day… One Limud! The amazing outpouring of enthusiasm for the new Amud HaYomi has been astounding. One of the important members of Dirshu in America, relates, “I received a phone call from a friend today, saying, ‘This morning when I went to Shacharis in my shul in Flatbush, there was an Amud HaYomi shiur beginning right after Shacharis. Later in the day, I went to a different shul for Mincha and I saw that they too had a new Amud HaYomi shiur. When I went to yet a third shul for Maariv, I again found a new Amud HaYomi shiur that was slated to finish just before Maariv. I realized that if Hashem sent me to three shuls in one day, each of which had an Amud HaYomi shiur, it is time that I too join the Amud HaYomi!”

“What news do you have to report?” A. asked, leaning over the table and peering at the man on his right. H. straightened his paper. A., or “the Boss” as he preferred to be called, had told him last week that encrypted messages were no longer a reliable form of correspondence. Only in-person meetings would work. In-person meetings, however, were intimidating. And M., his partner and closest relative, wasn’t allowed to attend them because his services were needed in other areas. “The family arrived on Wednesday.” H. began, looking down at his paper to verify. “On Thursday the husband left for the embassy at seven in the morning and returned at nine that night. On Friday, he left at seven and returned at four. Saturday, he and his son left for synagogue at nine and returned at twelve—” Recap: Eli and Jake meet up in the stairwell of their building and ride the Vienna tram system together. Thursday, but the son rode the tram system for two hours with a friend. Monday, the husband left for the embassy at ten and returned at six. Tuesday he left at three. Today he left at seven. M. will report the time of his return.” A. smiled. “An excellent tracking report. What about the report from the bugs?” H. frowned. “Nothing of relevance.” A. banged the table. “You and M. aren’t being paid to decide on relevance. You’re being paid to report. What have the bugs picked up?” H. shrank slightly in his chair. “It’s been difficult to report conversations via paper and pen. M. and I will do our best for next time.” He didn’t mention the fact that the bugs were clearly malfunctioning. A. would be furious. He and M. would instead have to somehow come up with a way of correcting the issue with no one being the wiser. A. leaned forward again. “If we gathered information based on relevancy, then you and M. would both be out of a job. This family isn’t relevant in any case, they’re just props in the way of our ultimate goal. Stop thinking. Just report. That’s what you’re being paid to do.” H. fell silent. When A. had hired him for this job, he’d been overjoyed. With a great-grandfather who’d fought in Hitler’s Wehrmacht during World War II, he and M., his first cousin, had been raised on tales of their ancestor’s amazing heroism. With A. representing an organization so close to H.’s heart, the notion of tracking down a target for him had seemed like a no-brainer. And A. was paying him and M. handsomely for their services.

“I want a full report of phone conversations at our next meeting,” A. said. “And more on their comings and goings. School in your country starts in another week. At that point the family’s routine will fall into a regular and predictable pattern, and my men and I will be able to act.” Your country… H. smiled. The words, beyond A.’s subtle accent, offered yet another reminder of the fact that A. was backed by a powerful — and wealthy — country. Enemies to the Israeli family they were spying on. *** The first day of school arrived with Jake and Eli nearly colliding on their way into their classroom. “Willkommen zu der Achte Klasse (Welcome to Eighth Grade)” the sign on the thick blue door read. The two boys had been informed by their parents that their classroom was on the third floor of the school building, at the far left of the hallway, and they now stood there, taking in the colorful sign with mixed emotions. This German is not for me, were Eli’s thoughts as he studied the unfamiliar words. He and Lillian had received several German lessons over the course of the last few week, yet the language still felt uncomfortably foreign to him. I hope no one here will make any silly comments, Jake thought as he stood next to Eli and examined the sign with him. He’d had enough ridiculous comments in Boston to last him a lifetime. “Good morning. I gather the two of you are the new boys?” a voice from behind them boomed out in English and then repeated in Hebrew.

Jake and Eli turned around. A tall and imposing man, with a slight mustache above his lip and a trim beard, was peering at them with a welcoming smile on his face. They both nodded. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Rabbi Marcus, the principal. Your parents told me that you boys have met each other, and I’m glad that I’m meeting you now too. This is the perfect opportunity to wish you hatzlachah rabbah — good luck. If you need any special help, my office is on the first floor, and I have an open-door policy.” “Thank you,” Eli said. Jake nodded. “The door to your classroom is unlocked,” Rabbi Marcus said. “You’re the first ones here, so use the opportunity to put your things down and take a good look around.” Jake and Eli didn’t need to be told twice. Eli pushed down on the door handle, and Jake scrambled into the classroom behind him. Outside in the hallway it sounded as though Rabbi Marcus was greeting other boys. “Let’s sit together,” Eli told Jake, depositing his briefcase on the chair of a desk near the window. “Together?” Jake repeated. “What do you mean?” A rustle in the doorway caused the boys to turn around. A boy with freckles on his cheeks and glasses on his nose nodded politely in their direction. “Good morning,” he said demurely, setting his briefcase down in the seat behind the desk that Eli had just claimed. “This seat next to me is taken.” “What?” Jake muttered. The boy had just

spoken in German, and he’d understood him, but what he’d said didn’t seem to make much sense to him. “In Europe, two students sit at every desk,” Eli explained, gesturing at the still-empty chair next to his. “You’re welcome to sit next to me.” “Oh,” Jake said. He slipped his briefcase into the empty seat beside Eli, wondering how in the world anyone could learn anything with someone else sitting so close all day long. Every day. The door to the classroom began to open and close. More boys poured in, and most of them were not as reticent as the frecklefaced boy. “You must be the new boys,” one boy with trim bangs and a small yarmulke said. “We heard that we’re getting some newcomers.” “Where are you from?” “How do you know each other?” An avalanche of questions, in a mixture of English, German, and Hebrew and from boys of all types and sizes, were heaped upon the boys’ head in a mixture of curiosity and friendship. Eli managed to answer most of the questions with aplomb. Jake, however, still trying to adjust to the idea of sitting all day long with a companion, was unable to respond to the same questions with ease. Miserably, he reflected upon the fact that their teacher hadn’t even arrived yet, and he was already waiting for the school day to end. Just seven hours and fifty minutes left.

¾-inch-thick plywood or corkboard, cut to whatever size you want (Note that corkboard is easier to work with than plywood.)

Copper nails (for plywood) or thumbtacks (for corkboard)

18-gauge copper jewelry wire

Pencil

Binder clips

Measuring tape or ruler

Paint (For the wood. This is optional. If you prefer the rustic look, keep the wood as is.)
Step 1: Measuring Use a tape measure or ruler to mark off the areas you’d like to place your nails or thumbtacks. Your items will hang from these, so while there’s no rule about spacing between the nails/thumbtacks, try to estimate how much space you’d need between each one.
Step 2: Nail Markings Hammer a nail or thumbtack into each of the markings that you just created.
Step 3: Copper Wire Use pliers to twist the copper wire around the head of the first nail, then extend the wire across the board’s frame to the next nail. Twist it around that nail head, and move on to the next nail. Keep doing this until you’ve extended the wire over all the thumbtacks on your board. 60

Step 4: Assemble Items to Hang Gather pictures, calendars (for a schedule that correlates to your vision), verses, quotes etc. If you’re not planning on using this as a vision board, gather any items you want, such as jewelry or photos.
Step 5: Decorating Option 1: Paint There are many ways to decorate your board. One option is to paint the board. To do this, select colors you like that match your room. I wanted my board to be two-toned, with one color for the border and a different color for the board itself, so I put tape around the border and then painted the board. If you want to go with this method, then make sure to lift the tape off only after the first color of paint is dry (or it will lift up your freshly-applied coat of paint). When you’re finished lifting the tape, paint the border. You will now have clean edges between the two colors of your project.
Option 2: Gold or Copper Leaf Decorating with gold or copper leaf is messy, so you might want to use the first option (painting) if you’re not up for more mess. If you do go with this option, the idea is to apply Mod Podge directly to the border of the board and to then stick cut-outs of gold or copper foil to the border by rubbing your finger or a paint brush across those cutouts so that they stick to the border. See Lakewood Vibes issue 3 (Rosh Hashanah) for more about working with gold or copper leaf. Seal the edges of the leaf with your finger, taking care to avoid tackiness. When you’re finished, brush more Mod Podge over the cutouts and allow the border to dry.
Step 6: Fill the Board with Inspiration On the board, write pesukim or quotes that inspire you. Or hang photos, jewelry, and other items to the nails and tacks on the board. Now, stand back and be inspired!

'האמינגבוירד' זענען א גאר גרויסע משפחה פון קליינע פייגל ,וועלכע ָ האבן אין זיך איבער 300סארט .זיי געפינען זיך נאר אין די אמעריקאנע קאנטינענטן ,האבן א לאנגן שנאבל וועלכע העלפט זיי צו טרינקען 'נעקטער' פון בלומען' און איבער אלעם קענען זיי פליען ווי א 'העליקאפטער' :ארויף, אראפ ,זייטוועגס ,צוריק און אפילו איבערגעדרייט אדער גאר בלייבן אויף איין פלאץ. וויאזוי קענען זיי באווייזן וואס קיין איין אנדער פויגל קען נישט? דער בורא האט זיי געבויעט גאר שטארקע פליגלען ,וועלכע קלאפן 100-200 'האם', מאל פער סעקונדע (!) און דאס מאכט א מאדנעם גערודער ווי א ָ 'האמינגבוירד'. דערפאר הייסן זיי ָ אין די זומער חדשים (פארוואס פונקט זומער? דער באשעפער האט זיי אזוי באשאפן ,ווייל דאן קענען די קליינע גרינג איבערלעבן!) מאכט די גלעזל-פארעם נעסט אזוי גרויס ווי א קוואדער! (זע בילד) און ָ מאמע א לייגט דערון אריין צוויי פיציקע אייער -אין די גרויס פונעם 'פי' בונדל. נאך 22טעג וועלן ארויסקומען די קינדער 18 .טעג שפעטער זענען זיי זעלבסשטענדיג. The hummingbird is of a large family of over 300 types of small birds. It is found only on the American continent, has a long bill which helps it suck nectar from flowers, and most impressive of all, it takes to the air like a helicopter. It flies upwards, downwards, sideways, backwards and upside down, and can hover in one place. How can it do what no other bird can? Hakadosh Baruch Hu created it with very strong wings which beat 100-200 times per second (!), and produce a strange ‘hum’-which is why its named hummingbird. In the summer months (why specifically summer? Hakadosh Baruch Hu made it so to give the tiny chicks’ a greater chance of survival) the mother builds a cup-shaped nest as large as a quarter! (see photo) and lays two tiny eggs the size of peas. After 22 days, the chicks emerge, and 18 days thereafter, they are independent.

The Bee-hummingbird’s iridescent feathers are of dazzling colors (red, pink, green, blue, white and black), the colors visible dependent upon the observer’s viewpoint. During specific months, its plumage comes alive, glittering like a jewel against the sun. The Bee-hummingbird flies nearly the entire day. In one day, it visits over 1,500(!) flowers-of many different speciesto drink their juicy nectar. Hakadosh Baruch Hu gifted the hummingbird with a thin, long bill which enables it to easily access nectar as it hovers over flowers and drinks its fill. Its tongue is another ‘custom fit’. At times, it catches small insects too, as it flies in the air. Because of its flying habits, the bee hummingbird requires huge amounts of energy and must eat and drink a lot. In one day, it can eat half of its weight (which would be like a 200 pound person eating 100 pounds!)and drink as much as 8 times its weight. Lessons From a Backseat Driver Chashie Stern
H
ave you ever strolled along the edge of a cliff?
yourself gasping for air that you didn’t know you were out of.
You know, balanced precariously at the edge of a precipice, the gorgeous view a mile or two below you laid out in all its glory. Held your arms out for balance, took deep, calming breaths, even closed your eyes in the face of the blazing adrenalin that engulfed you as your very life hung, literally, in the balance?
But shifting to the passenger seat comes along with a coronation of sorts, and now, as I slide into my own passenger seat while my youngster takes the wheel, I’ve officially been crowned “Backseat Driver.” (Although, truth be told, in my family the title includes the back seats as well.)
Yes, you have…if you’ve ever handed your teenager a set of car keys. But even more so if you’ve agreed to sit in the passenger seat. You see, when your child gets his or her permit after a written test, a few hours behind the wheel, and several arcade races, the passenger seat becomes your new driver’s seat. So you get to drive with only your voice — or whatever’s left of it after all the shrieking — while your teenager does the work. The only thing you really have to remember to do is breathe, because otherwise you’ll only realize you’ve been holding your breath once the practice session is over and/or you’ve reached your destination (whichever comes first) and you find

My own long-ago lessons were in heavy city traffic, where I had about ten seconds to parallel park before the entire city leaned on their horns and I had to go around the block until midnight looking for a parking space that gave me more than an inch of wiggle room. Very different from the suburban challenges of deliberating whether or not to stop for a picture upon seeing a small family of deer half a mile away. That being said, from my vast experience I hereby bequeath to our new drivers certain advice that does not, apparently, come along with driver’s ed but rather with the extensive training of a seasoned backseat driver. Study this well, and then you can tell your own backseat driver that you’ve already taken the course.

1. When you turn right or left, keep moving the car. Long ago, my very first question to my driving instructor was, “How do I know how much to turn the wheel?” Please don’t stop the car while deciding how much to turn the wheel. Keep moving. The drivers behind you will bless you for it.
2. Don’t tell anyone I said this, but you can drive
within ten miles above the speed limit on highways. But only if everyone else is. Or most other people. Just don’t be the driver that goes twenty below the speed limit and always, somehow, ends up in front of my car. TIA.
3. Green means go. Yellow means slow down.
Red means stop. That was just a quick review. Because there are some people who stop at a green because it might turn into a yellow, which would, of course, turn into a red at some point in the not-too-distant future. And then they roll down their window and shake their fist at the line of cars screeching to a sudden halt behind them. Don’t be them.
4. Honk! Don’t be afraid to honk at the headless driver pulling her monster truck out of a driveway directly at your car. She will most likely be grateful for the heads-up (no pun intended).
5. When you see the brake lights on the car in

front of you, it’s a signal for you to step on the brake — not to put the pedal to the metal in an effort to finally catch up to the guy, and then come to a screeching halt just to get your passenger to open his or her eyes. No, no.
6. Stop for pedestrians. You must have heard that a bajillion times, but do you even know what a pedestrian is? For goodness’ sake, who even made up that word? That’s what you must be wondering every time you see a stop sign and start looking for some aliens that look like they come from a place called Pedestria. Point is, just because you have the right of way doesn’t mean you can’t be mevater and let people go in front of you — whether they’re from New Jersey or Pedestria.
7. When you pull out of a driveway, you need only reverse enough to allow you the space necessary to pull forward onto the road. There’s no need to pull back and back and back all the way to Timbuktu just to see how far you can actually go and how long traffic will stop for you.
8. Listen carefully here: As much as you may want to restyle your mother’s sheitel, you may not leave the windows open when you go for a car wash. Just…no.

9. With all these noes coming your way, you may start looking around for an Eject button for the seat in which your backseat driver is cowering like a cat in a blizzard. I have news for you: The backseat driver is looking for it too. But under all circumstances: KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD!
10. Speaking of Eject buttons, always stop the car
fully before putting it into park. And don’t experiment with that one, unless, of course, you want to come face-to-face with the spider on your windshield.
11. You’re sitting at the pump, waiting for your little sister to come out of 7-Eleven with her Slurpee — and yours too, of course. You stare at the buttons in front of you because you have nothing else to do, and try to remember where the hazard lights are, the ones your father told you to put on every time you sit somewhere you’re not supposed to. And then, after trying various options, you finally find the right button. Blink, blink, blink. Hooray! Then your sister comes out with a red Slurpee instead of the Coke Slurpee you asked for, and you get all distracted and harrumph your way back onto the road and forget all about the hazards until everyone behind you is avoiding you as if your car is about to blow up, and you wonder why. It’s because you’ve forgotten to turn your hazards off. Don’t do that.

signal after you switch lanes. That is, if you ever turned it on. If you didn’t, then don’t forget to signal next time, and no matter what you do, don’t make eye contact with the person you just cut off.

Regarding eye contact, there are moments when you will have to cut into a lane, like when you forgot to get into the exit lane until the last minute because you were busy fretting about who your roommates will be on your upcoming Bais Yaakov Shabbaton, or davening that your mother isn’t serving leftovers again for supper. In these situations, open the window on the side you’re trying to cut into and put on your best apologetic face, puppy-dog eyes and all. Don’t forget to give that other car a thumbs-up to show hakaras hatov.

The left lane on highways is the fast lane, better known as the passing lane. The right lane is for exiting the highway, cautious types, and females*. Middle lane is for everyone else. For new drivers, best to avoid the left lane altogether unless you want the guy behind you reporting you as an escaped convict. (*Only a female can make female comments, just saying.)
15. If you ever find yourself on a busy highway
and see a bunch of white headlights coming toward you instead of red taillights ahead of you, well, hmm… It’s a good kasha (kushya?). I’ll save that one for your designated backseat driver.

Be Quiet!
Some things are better left unsaid…
If a person davens and says, “You are so compassionate that Your mercy reaches all the way to the bird’s nest,” (meaning: Hashem in His mercy commanded us to send away the mother bird before taking her chicks, to spare her pain and suffering) we silence him! Why? The Sages in the Gemara, Rabbi Yosi bar Avin and Rabbi Yosi bar Zevida, disagree on the reason.
A person who says this causes jealousy among the creations of the world, because it is as if he is saying that Hashem only has mercy on birds and not on His other creations!
There was once a shaliach tzibbur who led the davening in the beis midrash of Rabbah. Ribbono shel Olam, just like You had mercy on the bird’s nest, so too may You have mercy on us!
But I thought we learned that we are supposed to quiet him!

In another incident, someone was once leading the davening in the beis midrash of Rabbi Chanina.
When the chazzan finished praising Hashem, Rabbi Chanina approached him.
“The great, the mighty, the awesome, the powerful, the formidable, the feared, the strong, the fearless, the steadfast and the revered God…”
Is that all? Have you listed all the praises of the Creator?!
Even the three praises that we say in Shemoneh Esrei, “hagadol, hagibbor, v’hanorah — the great, the mighty, and the awesome,” we can only say because Moshe Rabbeinu said them in the Torah and the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah established them as part of the tefillah! And you go ahead and add more praises?!
But why not, Rabbeinu?
I’ll give you a mashal. There was a king who had thousands upon thousands of gold coins, and people praised him and said that he had silver coins. Is that a praise or a disgrace for him?
So too when it comes to HaKadosh Baruch Hu. We cannot fathom His praises, so how can we praise Him in our own words?! It is enough for us to use the words instituted by the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah!

A Short Tefillah, a Long Tefillah Length isn’t everything…
There was once a talmid who was leading the davening in the beis midrash of Rabbi Eliezer and he made the tefillah very long…
Another time, a different talmid was leading the davening in the beis midrash of Rabbi Eliezer,
Rabbeinu, he davens for such a long time! Does he daven longer than Moshe Rabbeinu, who prayed to Hashem for forty days and forty nights?
And he made the tefillah very brief.
Rabbeinu, his davening is so short! Is it shorter than the davening of Moshe Rabbeinu, who prayed for Miriam and said simply, “Keil nah refa na lah — Please Hashem, heal her now”?!

Nothing to Fear Where was all the screaming coming from?
Oh! Oh! Help! Hillel HaZakein had tremendous faith in Hashem and he and his family accepted suffering with love, as seen in the following incident…
I am certain that those shrieks are not coming from my house!
About Hillel, Rava cited the pasuk from Tehillim 112:7: “He does not fear bad news, his heart is steadfast, trusting in Hashem.” This refers to Hillel HaZakein!
Why was Hillel so sure that the screaming was not coming from his house? It’s because he had bitachon, and he trusted in Hashem to watch over his house and protect it from harm!

Hillel also had faith that even if something bad did happen in his home, his family would respond with equanimity, as he had taught them to. They would not yell and scream, and they would accept their troubles with love! That’s why, when Hillel heard the shouting, he was confident that it was not coming from his house.

Mushroom Leek Bourekas These irresistible mushroom and leek bourekas are so delightful, you’ll surely reach for another and then another… Perfectly golden and flaky, these knishes are an impressive appetizer or midday snack.
Ingredients 24 4
pastry squares honey mustard leeks, cleaned and thinly sliced (white and light-green parts only)

containers of mushrooms, cleaned and sliced salt, to taste pepper, to taste garlic powder, to taste sesame seeds, for sprinkling egg, beaten (for egg wash) oil, for sautéing
Instructions 1. In a large skillet over medium heat, place oil and add the sliced leeks, sautéing until they begin to soften, about 4–5 minutes.
2. Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms release their moisture, and the leeks and mushrooms are both tender and lightly browned.
3. Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, stirring well to combine. 4.Remove the mixture from the heat, setting aside to cool slightly. 5. At this point, preheat your oven to the temperature specified on the package of pastry squares, or 375°F if not otherwise specified.
6. Lay the pastry squares on a clean work surface. Drizzle a small amount of honey mustard onto the center of each square.
7. Spoon a portion of the sautéed mixture onto the center of each pastry square, making sure not to overfill.
8. Fold the pastry square over the filling to form a triangle. Press the edges together to seal. You can use the tines of a fork to create a decorative edge.
9. Place the filled bourekas onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. 10. Brush the top of each boureka with the beaten egg to give it a shiny finish. Sprinkle sesame seeds
on top.
11. Place the baking sheet with the bourekas in the preheated oven and bake until the bourekas are golden brown and puffed up, usually around 20–25 minutes. Timing may vary depending on the pastry brand and your oven. 12. Remove baked bourekas from the oven and allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheet.

Vibes of Taste
The Best Meatballs
This meatball recipe is sure to be a winner dinner, eliciting smiles all around the table! Simple yet flavorful, this dish is bound to have everyone reaching for seconds.
Bracha Shifrin
Ingredients For the meatballs 1 lb Ground beef 2 cloves Crushed garlic ½ tsp Chili flakes 1 tsp Salt ½ tsp Pepper 1 tsp Dried parsley flakes ½ cup Breadcrumbs 1 Egg 1 medium Zucchini, shredded 1 TBSP BBQ sauce A splash of water (approximately 2 TBSP) For the sauce 2 TBSP Oil 2 cloves Crushed garlic ¼ tsp Chili flakes ¼ cup Dry red wine ¼ cup Ketchup 2 TBSP BBQ sauce 1 TBSP Soy sauce 2 28-ounce cans of marinara sauce ½ cup Water 1 Bay leaf
Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, crushed garlic, chili flakes, salt, pepper, dried parsley flakes, breadcrumbs, egg, shredded zucchini, BBQ sauce, and water, mixing until the ingredients are well incorporated. 3. Shape the mixture into meatballs and place them on a baking sheet. 4. Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the meatballs are browned and cooked through. 5. To prepare the sauce, fill a large pot with oil and place over medium heat. Add the crushed garlic and chili flakes, and sauté until fragrant. 6. Pour the dry red wine into the pot and reduce the heat for several minutes. 7. Add ketchup, BBQ sauce, soy sauce, marinara sauce, and water to the pot. Stir well to combine. 8. Add the bay leaf, bringing the sauce to a boil. 9. Add the baked meatballs to the boiling sauce. Reduce the heat, cover, and let simmer for an additional 20 minutes before serving. 100

Immune Boosting Bone Broth keep this recipe on hand when your loved ones feel “under the weather”

2 about 2 lbs of chicken bones from whole chicken 2Carrot (peeled and chopped) 2 Yellow Onion (diced) 4 stalks Celery (chopped) 6 Garlic (cloves, halved) 2 tbsps Raw Apple Cider Vinegar 2 tsps Sea Salt 2 cups Parsley (chopped) 12 cups Water
1. Place the bones in the slow cooker. Add all remaining ingredients. Set slow cooker to low and let cook for at least 12 hours. 2. After 12 hours, strain the broth through a strainer or mesh sack. Discard the vegetables that you strained out. Allow broth to cool. Freeze broth until ready to use.

1 cup Unsweetened Almond Milk
In a bowl, combine the coconut milk, chia seeds, honey, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in the oats. 2. Divide evenly between jars. Refrigerate overnight or for at least eight hours. When ready to serve, top with pistachios and walnuts. Enjoy!

We were on a trip with all my cousins and our grandparents, to a lake atop a mountain. While everyone was packing up to go home, a cloud descended over the top of the mountain. It was SOOO thick. It takes a long time to pack up our 9-member family. This time it was no different. Everyone else had left, except for us and one other family. Finally, we finished packing! We drove down to the garbage disposal about 2 miles down the mountain with my mother's head out the window guiding my father where to go through the intense fog. Our lights helped a little bit. We parked beside the garbage disposal to throw out garbage. Suddenly we got a call from our cousins saying that we had left our favorite baby blanket behind. They told us they would meet up with us at the garbage disposal in 5 minutes to give it to us. However, 15 minutes later they still weren’t there. My mother called them, and Baruch Hashem the cell service worked, because they were stuck on top of the mountain! Their yellow headlights could not cut through the fog! The only reason we could see is because we have special LED headlights. My father had installed them years ago but had not been able to explain why he wanted the LED’s so badly. Now we knew! We inched back up and saw that the cloud had gotten a lot worse. Baruch Hashem, we were able to guide them down, with my mother out the window again! Since connection was so spotty, they could have been stuck on the mountain until the next day! Thank You Hashem, we left the blanket, got the call and had LED’s!

Our encounter turned into a cherished friendship, and I learned that sometimes, missing the bus can lead to the most beautiful friendships.
