everal days ago, my daughter came home pale-faced from a shiur she’d been to. “Did you hear the news?” she asked me. “There was a shooting in the next city and my friends were there. They told us about it when they came to the shiur.” My daughter was visibly shaken because she’d contemplated joining her friends on their journey to the next city, but hashgacha pratis intervened so that she instead went elsewhere. The radio in my house was off, as I’m no fan of hearing sad or horrific news items in all their ghastly glory. My daughter, however, told me that if I did turn it on, I’d probably hear all about the gore and horror of the incident that her friends had unfortunately been witness to — so I didn’t turn it on. I think my daughter may have slept better that night because of the lack of access to complete coverage about the incident. And because of our conversation about the ills of unnecessary exposure. The whole incident got me thinking about the power of seeing vs. the power of hearing. My daughter had been visibly pale because of something that she’d heard. Her friends would surely react to the incident which they’d witnessed in an even more intense way. These days there is an avalanche of news all around. The “Information Generation” is the term coined to describe our generation — a generation which can access data from all over with a simple flick of the wrist or swipe of the finger. Several days after the incident that my daughter was privy too, a similarly catastrophic story hit the news. It happened far away from where we live, but I was affected by it just by hearing about it. I refused to read about it—as reading is a step up from hearing and has an impressionable effect on one’s psyche.

I did not want to impress horrors upon my psyche. In this week’s parashah, the passuk reads: “And all the people saw the voices and the torches, the sound of the shofar, and the smoking mountain…” (Shemos 20:15). According to Rabbi Akiva, the Jews heard the lightning and saw the thunder. Both hearing and seeing are key to accepting the Torah. When we hear something, we learn about it gradually (word by word or sentence by sentence) But when we see something, it becomes an integral part of our psyche. It’s indisputable. At Har Sinai, the Torah became an indisputable part of our makeup. We didn’t only hear the Aseres HaDibros, we also saw them. We experienced them. But since that time, and even before it, we’ve also been waiting for the greatest experience of all time. This is an experience that we want not only to hear about, but to witness and experience in all its glory. If the effect of simply hearing something second hand were such that it caused my daughter to grow pale, then how much greater is the effect of seeing it. How wonderful it will be to witness and be part of the greatest event ever: the coming of Moshiach. This month, Shevat, is an acronym for: shenishma besuros tovos— may we hear good tidings. As we wish this to one another, let’s remember that we don’t want to make do with only hearing alone. We want to experience the greatest tidings of all in the form of geulah.

The Value of Every Yid The Gemara in Shabbos 88b describes what happened when Moshe Rabbeinu went up to Shamayim before Matan Torah. Rabbi Yehoshua Ben Levi says the malachim asked Hashem, “What is this human being, born to a woman, doing among us?” Hashem answered that Moshe came to receive the Torah. The malachim replied, “The Torah is a hidden treasure that has been here for 974 generations before the world was created. Now you want to give it to man, who is made of flesh and blood? ’What is man that You should remember him?’ (Tehillim 8:5).” Hashem told Moshe to answer the malachim’s claims. Moshe was afraid that they would burn him with their words, so Hashem told him to grab onto the kisei hakavod to answer. Moshe did so and explained to the malachim what it means to be a human being. He went through the aseres hadibros, beginning with the first, ’I am Hashem who took you out of Mitzrayim.’ “Were you enslaved by Pharaoh?” He asked. “There is a commandment to remember Shabbos. Do you work and therefore need to stop to keep Shabbos? Do you have parents to honor? The Torah commands us not to kill or steal. Do you have a business? Is there jealousy among you?” Hearing Moshe’s claims, the malachim agreed that the Torah is meant for humans living in a physical world. For Moshe was telling the malachim that people need the Torah’s help and guidance to work and live in this world. They, however, do not. The Aish Kodesh of Piaseczna Hy”d provides additional insight into this Gemara. The malachim were claiming that there is no way for humans to understand the depth of the Torah. Through the exchange with Moshe Rabeinu, Hakadosh Boruch Hu explained that the malachim could never understand what it means to be a person who falls low and rises high. When Hashem told Moshe to grab onto the kisei hakavod, He was demonstrating how close a person can come to Hashem. Man has value that he doesn’t always perceive. Hashem wanted Moshe to inform Bnei Yisroel about their greatness and this would enable them to become a vessel to receive the Torah. The Aish Kodesh further explains this idea with a Gemara in Chullin 7a. Once, when Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair was on his way to fulfill the mitzvah of pidyon shevuyim, he encountered the Ginai River. Rabbi Pinchas told the river to split, but the river refused. “If I split for you,” the river said. “You may or may not accomplish what you are setting out to do. However, I, by just being here, am definitely accomplishing Hashem’s will.” Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair responded, “If you don’t split for me, I will decree that water never flow through you again.” The river obeyed and split. Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair then instructed the river to also split for a man who was accompanying him with wheat to perform the mitzvah of baking matzos for Pesach and the river obeyed again. There was an Arab merchant traveling with them as well and Rabbi Pinchas demanded that the river split for him too, so that it should not be said, “This is how they deal with those traveling with them,” and once again the river obeyed. This incident is hard to understand. The river makes a seemingly compelling argument which Rabbi Pinchos’s answer doesn’t really address. Furthermore, when Hashem created the Yam Suf, He included the condition that it would one day split for Bnei Yisroel. Similarly, when Hashem created the Ginai River, Hashem told it that it would need to split one day too. If so, why wasn’t the river willing to split for Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair? 22

The Aish Kodesh explains that the river mistakenly assumed that it would split only when all of Klal Yisroel needed a miracle, like the Yam Suf which split for all of Bnei Yisroel to cross. However, the river miscalculated the value of each Jew. Just as we are obligated to be mechalel Shabbos to save the life of even one Jew, the river needed to stop flowing for an individual — to emphasize how crucial each individual is. Rav Yaakov Galinsky zt”l related an experience that took place in Siberia that showed him how much a person must value himself. Along with thousands of other men in Siberia, Rav Yaakov underwent excruciating physical labor . At night, in their crowded barracks, the men tried to take advantage of the few hours allotted to them for sleep. But, night after night, Rav Yaakov noticed that the man sleeping next to him would wake up, remove some clothing from under his bed, dress quickly, look in a mirror for a minute or two, then change out of the clothing and go back to sleep. Once, while they were marching side by side, Rav Yaakov grabbed the opportunity to ask the man about his unusual behavior. His answer was compelling: “I was a high-ranking Polish officer with control over thousands of soldiers. Because of my high rank, the guards here despise me and try to disgrace me. Every day I undergo this degradation and feel like I’m in danger of emotional collapse. At night, therefore, when no one sees me, I take out my uniform with its medallions, and I wear it for a few minutes. In this way, I remind myself that unlike our captors think, I am actually a respectable person. Even though this thought only takes place in my imagination because I’m in Siberia, it encourages me and gives me the energy to keep on living. As Jews, this concept applies to us that much more. Not only does every Yid have incredible value, but every single mitzvah that we do creates a huge impression that we are not aware of. Many years ago, I heard an incredible story about the power of a “simple” Yid and the seemingly “simple” mitzvos that he did. A seminary girl whom we hosted for Shabbos, confirmed that the story had happened to her father! Her father, Aaron was learning in a university where the professor brought in a presenter well versed in witchcraft. The witch gave a speech and then allowed time for questions from the students. When Aaron raised his hand to ask something however, she ignored him. She even prepared to wrap up her talk and leave with Aaron’s hand still raised. But then, the professor said, “Wait, there’s one student who still has a question.” The witch looked in Aaron’s direction and fainted. When she recovered, the professor asked her what had happened. She explained, “When I walked into the classroom, I sensed a power greater than my witchcraft emanating from Aaron’s side of the room. I tried to avoid looking there but when you forced me to answer his question, the power overcame me, and I couldn’t withstand it.” “What is this young man’s power that is stronger than yours?” The students and professor wondered. “He speaks to his Creator three times a day!” the witch responded. This week when we hear the Aseires Hadibros, let’s remember how much potential we have been granted because of kabbalas HaTorah. Every Jew has tremendous value, and every mitzvah has so much power. Reb Shabtai Hopstein

Father of the Maggid of Kozhnitz (1715 –1761) Shira Yael Klein

Reb Shabtai was a bookbinder who lived in poverty his whole life, but he and his wife were always happy with their lot. When Reb Shabtai reached old age, he didn’t have the strength to work enough to pay for bread and water. Nonetheless, he trusted that Hashem would take care of him and his wife, and he refused to ask for tzedakah. One erev Shabbos, Reb Shabtai and his wife had no food in the house and no money with which to make Shabbos. Reb Shabtai went to shul, as he always did, even though the house was totally empty. He had faith that Hashem would take care of them. On leil Shabbos, when the davening was over, Reb Shabtai went back home, even though he knew the house had been bare when he left it. As he got closer to his house, he suddenly stopped dead in his tracks. The light of the Shabbos candles was shining from his windows, even though they’d had no Shabbos candles when he’d gone to shul. He began to sing and dance in appreciation of all that Hashem had given him. At precisely that moment, the Baal Shem Tov was sitting with his talmidim at his Shabbos seudah. He saw that up in Shamayim, all the heavenly hosts were rejoicing together with Reb Shabtai and he, too, took part in Reb Shabtai’s joy. The Baal Shem Tov’s talmidim saw him rejoice, but asked no questions. Only on Motzei Shabbos did Reb Wolf Kitzes approach the Baal Shem Tov and ask, “Why was rebbe so happy on leil Shabbos?” The Baal Shem Tov told Reb Wolf and his other talmidim to prepare for a journey so as to see for themselves. The talmidim, used to setting out unexpectedly, quickly packed provisions for a journey. The holy entourage then boarded a wagon together with the Baal Shem Tov. They traveled to the city of Apte (modern day Opatow), where Reb Shabtai lived. There, the Baal Shem Tov instructed that Reb Shabtai the bookbinder be summoned to him.

When Reb Shabtai appeared, the Baal Shem Tov asked him to relate what had happened to him on leil Shabbos. Reb Shabtai sat and related the whole story. When he finished, the Baal Shem Tov said to him, “You should know that all the heavenly hosts took part in your simchah. Now, what is your request?” “I would like to have a son,” Reb Shabtai replied. The Baal Shem Tov gave him a berachah for a son. The next year, Reb Shabtai’s wife gave birth to a baby boy. Reb Shabtai invited the Baal Shem Tov to the bris and asked him what name he should give his baby. “Yisrael,” the Baal Shem Tov answered him. This baby grew up to be Reb Yisrael, the holy Maggid of Kozhnitz. The Beis Aharon of Karlin later said that by naming the baby, “Yisrael”, the Baal Shem Tov imbued him with more kochos than a tzaddik could achieve on his own merit, after eighty years of work. Reb Dovid HaLevi Segal The Taz (1586-1667)

Shira Yael Klein When the Taz finished writing the Turei Zahav on the Shulchan Aruch, he worried that maybe he hadn’t written it totally leshem shamayim, so he did not print it. The Taz had a minhag to host a guest for the seudah every leil Shabbos.One Shabbos in the middle of the winter however, the weather was so bad that there were no travelers. The Taz sent his shamesh to search for someone who could be his guest. The shamesh searched and searched and finally,found a poor man huddled next to the stove of a shul. “Please, come with me and be a guest at the rav’s Shabbos seudah,” the shamash said.

“Don’t worry, sir. Come to my house, and we’ll feed you well. My wife bakes the best challos; they’re, light, white and fluffy. We have geflite fish with chrein, chicken soup, liver, meat, farfel, potato kugel…. And I’ll take it easy with the singing.” “Are you sure? I know these guys who say they’ll sing just one or two zemiros, and then they pick the longest ones, and use the slowest tunes. Don’t they know that the point of a meal is to eat?” “Listen, you have my word: No singing until the main course is served, and even then, it’ll be a lot of food and a little bit of singing. Deal?”

But the man refused. The shamash returned to the Taz. “I found someone, but he doesn’t want to come,” He said. “I don’t know.”

And so, the Taz left his warm house and plowed through the snowy streets, until he reached the shul. Just as his shamash had said, there was a poor wayfarer there, warming himself by the heat of the oven.

“You must be the rabbi- but I already said I’m not interested!” “Why not?” “Because I know how it goes with you rabbis. Everyone has to be formal and polite in your presence. And you guys shlep the seudah out with all your singing. I’m hungry, and I want to eat! A high-falutin rabbi’s house is no place for me.” 28

The main course was served and the poor man took the meat platter, set it down in front of him, and polished it off. The potato kugel was his next victim he then proceeded to decimate the farfel, annihilate the salad, and obliterate everything else on the table. While the poor man licked the last bits of liver from his plate, the Taz sent his shamesh to collect many more food leftovers from the neighbors. As his very hungry guest consumed the small mountain of food that had been set down before him, the Taz finally began to sing the first zemirah of the night.

Despite the man’s incredible appetite and poor table manners, the Taz treated him respectfully, and did his best to make him feel welcome.

In the Taz’s house, everything was ready for the seudah. Only one thing was missing. : A guests!

The poor man looked the Taz up and down,taking in his distinguished bearing and rabbinic garb.

The guest ate that too.

The next day, the scene repeated itself. The poor man ate all the food that the Taz had in his house, and the extra food brought in from the neighbors’ houses, as well.

“Why not?”

“Please, come to my house and be my guest,” the Taz said.

At the Taz’s instructions, the shamesh went to ask the neighbors if they had extra chicken soup.

On Motzei Shabbos, the poor man turned to the Taz. Suddenly, his posture was straighter. His clothing, while still ragged, were somehow neater. And he had a different, noble air about him. “Deal.” The poor man followed the Taz through the deserted streets to his home. There the Taz shook off his coat and hung it carefully. The guest clomped his way to the table, leaving a trail of mud and slush in his wake. True to his word, the Taz made kiddush quickly and they got right down to the food. The poor man polished off the challos and gefilte fish. He slurped his soup to the last drop, demanded more, and got it. “That’s it?” he asked when he’d finished his second portion. “Why didn’t you make more?”

“I would like to tell you something,” he said to the Taz. “You thought that I was a poor, boorish wayfarer. But really I am Eliyahu Hanavi. I was sent to test your hachnasas orchim and you passed the test with flying colors. And there’s one more thing, too: You should publish the Turei Zahav.” The Taz’s yahrzeit is Chof Vav Shevat. Chapter 22 RECAP: Debbie contacts the police about Avi’s disappearance, but the police are unwilling to take the disappearance seriously until twenty-four hours pass. In the bathroom, Debbie finds a bar of soap with a message that Avi penned before his disappearance which reads: Don’t worry.
