Effort Increases the Value Bnei Yisroel donated thirteen types of items to build the Mishkan and its keilim. Among these were the “shoham stones and stones that filled the ephod and the choshen” (Shemos 25:7). These stones were donated by the nesi’im. The Ohr Hachaim questions why these stones, which were so precious in value, are mentioned at the end of the list of donated items. He quotes the Gemara (Yoma 75b), which teaches that these precious stones fell together with the mann straight to the nesi’im’s doorsteps because they were on a great enough level to receive them. These stones did not come to the doorsteps of the rest of Klal Yisroel. Nonetheless, because these stones came without effort or exertion on the nesiim’s part, they are not considered as precious as the donations that Klal Yisroel gave from their personal wealth. Rav Pam emphasizes a great life lesson. When someone receives a gift without having to work for it, it is not as valuable as when a person puts effort and energy into something. Effort creates a strong bond which is not easily broken. The passuk says, “When a nefesh offers a mincha offering to Hashem…” (Vayikra 2:1). The word nefesh is used to describe a person who brings the mincha offering, but the word is not used in conjunction with any of the other korbanos. The Gemara explains that the word nefesh is used here specifically, because a korban minchah is usually brought by poor people who cannot afford to offer a bird, or an animal, as a korban. They bring a handful of flour and oil instead. Because this korban requires effort on the part of the poor people, Hashem considers it as if they have sacrificed their nefesh, their souls. (Menachos 104b) The Gemara also states that, “A person enjoys one measure of his own more than nine measures from his friend.” Rashi explains that this is because he put effort into growing his own produce and that creates an attachment to it. (Bava Metzia 38b) The only mitzvah in the Torah connected with the mitzvah of bowing to Hashem is bikkurim. When someone puts all his energy into sewing his field, fertilizing it, planting and harvesting, and then gives his first fruits to Hashem, he has directed tremendous personal effort toward Hashem. It is therefore fitting that he merits to bow to Hashem as he brings up his first fruits, resulting in a unique closeness. In his sefer, Kochvei Ohr, Rav Yitzchok Blazer (a talmid of Rav Yisroel Salanter), discusses the idea that effort increases value. He brings down a midrash about Rav Shimon ben Chalafta to prove this point. One erev Shabbos, Rav Shimon had no means to provide food for himself and his family. He went outside the city to daven and was granted a stone from the heavens which he used to buy his Shabbos needs. When he brought his purchases home, Rav Shimon’s wife asked him where everything had come from. “From the parnassah that Hashem granted me,” Rav Shimon replied. To this, his wife responded, “If you don’t tell me where the money for the food came from, I won’t taste a thing.” Rav Shimon revealed that he had davened to Hashem and received bounty from heaven. “I will not taste anything, and you must return it all after Shabbos,” Rav Shimon’s wife said. When her husband asked her why, she said, “Do you want your friends’ tables in Olam Habba to be full while yours is empty?” 22

Faced with a predicament, Rav Shimon ben Chalafta went to his teacher, Rav Yehuda Hanasi (a.k.a. Rebbe). “Tell your wife that if your table is empty I will fill it from mine,” Rebbe said. When Rav Shimon relayed these words to his wife, she asked to speak with Rebbe. “Does a man see his friend in Olam Habba?” she asked Rebbe. Rav Yehudah Hanasi agreed with Rav Shimon’s wife’s claim and Rav Shimon returned the stone. The Kochvei Ohr questions how Rav Shimon’s wife’s “won” Rebbe over with her reasoning. Furthermore, how is it possible that Rebbe would promise something he couldn’t fulfill? The Kochvei Ohr explains with the mishneh, “Ben Hei Hei says, according to the pain is the gain” (Avos 5:25). In this world, when someone works at hard physical labor he is not paid more because he worked strenuously. Nor is he paid more if he is weak and had a harder time filling the work quota. However, with Hashem, in addition to there being a reward for the actual mitzvah, there is a calculation for how much effort it took to fulfill it. There is no comparison between one who learns Torah with ease, and one who learns amidst difficulty. The reward for someone who makes effort while in pain, or for someone who has to work hard to overcome his temptations, is not the same as it is for a healthy person, or someone who does not have to exert himself. The reward that a person will receive is calculated according to the amount of effort that he put in. Rav Eliyahu Lopian gives the example of a talented person who succeeds in learning a daf Gemara in two hours, whose friend may need to spend all day exerting tremendous effort to learn the same amount. The reward for these two people is not the same, because reward is determined according to effort. The Sefer Chassidim writes that when a person does a mitzvah where he has to work against his inclination, this effort is worth more than one hundred instances when he does not have to struggle. Rav Shimon ben Chalafta’s wife understood that a person receives an additional reward for any difficulties he encounters. She realized that her husband, who learned Torah in dire poverty, would receive an extra reward because of his circumstances. She was unwilling to give up this reward. Rebbe, who was extremely wealthy, and whose horse watchmen were wealthier than queens, would never be able to receive the same reward as someone who learned in poverty. Rebbe agreed that he would be unable to fill Rav Shimon’s table with a reward commensurate to t her husband sacrifice to study Torah. And there would be different worlds in Olam Haba for their very different situations. This concept applies to many facets of our daily lives. Often, when we put in extra effort to help a child, a close relationship will develop as a result. After an argument with a friend which requires hard work to repair, the relationship deepens and is more appreciated. An application of this can be seen in the Derech Eretz Zuta where we are advised that if we want to truly love our friend, we should do good for him. And the more we try to do help him, the greater our love will be toward him. Putting in effort increases the value of the goal. Reb Shlomo Mayer of Sassov The Sassover Rebbe (1835–1918)
Shira Yael Klein First Sassover rebbe was Reb Moshe Leib Erblich of Sassov, a talmid of the Maggid of Mezritch. Sassov is located in Eastern Galicia, which is currently a part of Ukraine. By the late 1800s, the descendants of Reb Moshe Leib had become rabbonim in other cities, and the Jews in Sassov found themselves without a rav. They asked the Sar Shalom of Belz (Reb Shalom Rokeach) for guidance and he advised them to appoint his grandson, Reb Shlomo Mayer, as rebbe.

Reb Shlomo was silent at first, but then he asked the mayor to bring him the silk cloth. When the mayor arrived with the cloth, Reb Shlomo said, “Bathe your daughter three times a day with this cloth and as you wash her, say, ‘The rebbe of Sasov commanded me to do this.’ Hopefully she will be healed again, but you should know that she will bear evidence of her illness for the rest of her life.”
Reb Shlomo was known as a wonder healer, and he also expelled dybbuks from people’s bodies. During World War I he moved to Lvov (modern day Lviv), where he was niftar. His sons continued the Sassov dynasty in Lvov. ***
It all started when the mayor’s daughter became very sick. She was attended to by the best doctors, but they eventually gave up. There was nothing more they could do, and all hope for her recovery was lost. Now, Reb Shlomo had a gabbai named Reb Avraham. Reb Avraham advised the mayor to bring his daughter to Reb Shlomo and to ask the rebbe to heal his daughter. The mayor consulted with the local priest about this, and the priest told him, “You have nothing to lose by trying.” The mayor thus placed his paralyzed 26

Immediately, the girl fainted. The mayor ran to Reb Shlomo and begged him to pray for my daughter.
Reb Shlomo Mayer thus moved to Sassov and took on the title “Sassover Rebbe,” even though he was a scion of the Belzer dynasty, and not a relative of the original Sassover rebbe.
The mayor of Sasov respected Reb Shlomo very much, and he once explained the reason for this reverence to the people of his city.
And so it was. Within a week of baths with the silk cloth, the mayor’s daughter recovered. The mayor and his wife watched over her so that she wouldn’t step outside the house. But on the last day of the second week, when the mayor was busy with his work, and his wife was busy in the kitchen, they didn’t notice that their daughter slipped out to the yard to play with the other children there.

And so it was. The mayor’s daughter recovered, but one of her feet remained affected. This, the mayor explained to the residents of his city, was why he respected Reb Shlomo so much. He saw that Reb Shlomo was a true man of G-d. The best doctors had already given up on his daughter, but even the priest told him to turn to Reb Shlomo, knowing that he’d be able to save his daughter. Reb Elchanan Perlmutter Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivas Chadera Shira Yael Klein
Reb Elchanan Perlmutter was a graduate of the famed Novardok Yeshivah, one of the largest yeshivos of the Mussar movement in Europe prior to the onset of World War II. In Eretz Yisroel, in the year 1950, Reb Elchanan and his friend, Reb Yaakov Galinsky, became roshei yeshivah of the fledgling Yeshivas Chadera — which ran on many of the principles of the original Novardok yeshivah. *** It was into this Yeshivas Chadera that a new fridge arrived one day. Even without measuring the doorways, the porter and technician saw that the fridge stood no chance of passing through. “So, what do we do now?” the porter asked the technician. “We take it apart.” “And then?”” “And then we put it back together again,” the technician said, and then he smiled. “It’s a good thing that I’m such an expert in my field. Putting together a fridge is like child’s play for me.” Soon the fridge was disassembled into components and parts. Shelves and drawers, doors and trays, the thermostat and the compressor…. Students, making their way to the dining room, escorted the fridge parts with curiosity, as they watched the burly porter and self-assured technician work together to reassembled the refrigerator. “This shelf goes here…. Now the compressor… Good. Now the drawers…. It’s like putting a puzzle together. A piece of game”

As the fridge came together, the bachurim smiled with delight. Yeshivas Chadera had been established in a large local shul on a non-existent budget. Nonetheless, when the yeshivah’s administrators saw that they had no place to store perishable food items and that fruits and vegetables were rotting, they knew they needed to buy a refrigerator. And now the fridge was in the process of being built. Only one thing was missing. Despite the technician’s expertise, he couldn’t seem to affix the door to the fridge. A stubborn screw kept refusing to slip into place. It was strange. The technician had dealt with greater complications over the course of his lengthy career, and yet there was still something stubborn and unyielding about the screw. “It’s not a problem,” the technician announced, “I’ve been a refrigerator technician for twenty years. I’ll get this straightened out in no time. It’s just technicality.” Another ten minutes passed. Then twenty. Half an hour…. The technician remained engaged in battle with the spunky screw. And the screw was winning. Someone entered the dining room and calmly observed the scene. It was the rosh yeshivah, Reb Elchanan Perlmutter. He looked at the flustered technician and offered his help. “What?! You want to help me? Mah pitom? I’m an experienced technician,
one of the best in the field. If I can’t do it, how will you?” The technician went back to trying to force the screw into place. But much as he tried he continued to fail. “You know what?” he finally told Reb Elchanan. “Maybe you should give it a shot. Yalah, try.” Reb Elchanan took the screw, focused on what needed to be done — and the screw slipped into place! The refrigerator was complete. The porter plugged it in, and it whirred to life. The technician was rendered speechless as he took his payment and left the scene. The bachurim remained gathered around their rosh yeshivah. They wondered how in the world he had managed to defeat the spunky screw, when the experienced technician hadn’t been able? Reb Elchanan smiled. “Do you think that the technician was wrong? He was right! He really is an expert, and much more experienced than I am. But I learned my trade in the Novardok yeshivah.” “Which trade?” wondered.

The organization also operates ‘The Cabin’ in Lakewood, Williamsburg, Monsey and Boro Park. These are centers where children can come by to play, relax, rejuvenate, and get away from the difficult circumstances at home. Every afternoon and on days when school is out, The Cabin welcomes the children who need a break — emotionally, physically, and socially. At The Cabin, the children receive fresh and nourishing dinners, are helped with their homework, spend time with peers and older volunteers, and given a chance to have fun and forget their troubles in a healthy environment. The organization’s far-reaching mission has in recent years advanced to serving hundreds of families, with the help of an ever growing team. To illustrate, every day, hundreds of girls volunteer to take care of the overlooked children at home and make sure that The Cabin is set up and ready for kids to enjoy. A rotation of dozens of male drivers and dozens of female drivers deliver food daily and take families and volunteers to and from The Cabin. Many others cook dinner or take on hospital shifts. All with complete devotion and without pay. There are many children who feel the same way in our schools today.
school girls who fail to mature at the same pace as their peers will begin to feel left out and not accepted. Of course, there are many different levels of maturity among middle school girls and therefore it is hard to determine what is problematic. To that end, I have compiled a list of warning signs of poor social development for middle school girls: •A lack of consistency in friendships •No friends
Did you ever notice the child in the recess yard walking around by himself? What about the girl who never has a partner on line? Or the boy who does not have any play dates after school? Is it shyness or something more than that?
•Unable to set limits with friendships and therefore cannot identify her own likes and dislikes
In today’s high-paced and increasingly technologically-based society, we are seeming an increase in children with social skills deficits. Some children might simply be shy and experiencing some pain from being teased or left out is a normal part of social development. However, for some socially awkward children, ostracism may be a regular part of their daily lives.
•Poor eye contact
Elementary Students Katharine Beals, a professor at University of Pennsylvania, recently authored a book entitled “Raising a Left-Brain Child in a Right-Brain World.” In her book, she argues that “bright, quirky, socially awkward children” are at a disadvantage in today’s schools because contemporary education emphasizes group learning and class participation. Some socially awkward are in fact the stereotypical “nerd” – children who process things linearly, think abstractly and logically, attune themselves to verbal rather than nonverbal communication, and prefer to work independently. Beals argues that these children, who might call nebbish or nebs, need help from parents and schools to help them make their way in the world. So, what can parents do to help the socially awkward elementary school student? Here are some suggestions for helping your school age child acclimate to the social environment: •Provide a variety of social activities. There are so many social opportunities that are available to children – shul groups, baseball leagues, art classes, play dates, park outings, and many more. Giving your child the opportunity to explore his social behavior in these different contexts will help him expand his social repertoire. •Consider a social skills coach. Social skills coaches can help children learn about nonverbal communication and teamwork. The goal of coaches is to provide children with a safe environment to practice their still emerging communication skills. •Initiate and practice pro-social behavior at home. Even if you are not a social skills coach, you have the ability to help your child understand proper social behavior. Talk about the ways that you greet people, how you can guess what they are feeling based on their facial expressions, and ways to initiate conversations. The more aware your child is of social behavior, the more likely he will be to practice it.
Middle School Girls While children who are extremely socially awkward will often be ostracized by their peers in elementary school, middle school is when a child’s social development becomes more apparent. In order to demonstrate their maturity, many girls will interact with their peers in more adult-like ways. This means that middle
•Unable to coordinate her own playdates; parents still required to set them up •Poor hygiene •Disinterest in extracurricular activities that had once been appealing •Severe unhappiness when returning home from school There are multiple reasons why a middle school girl struggles socially. The simplest reason is that she needs to be taught social skills that come naturally to other girls her age. Alternatively, she might be suffering from a mild form of a nonverbal learning disorder (NVLD), which can cause difficulty reading social cues. Or, she might have Aspergers Syndrome which is often called a high-functioning autism that can result in an inability to read nonverbal communication. All three of these situations can cause children to have social anxiety which can lead to further awkward behavior. Here are some suggestions of how to help middle school girls who are struggling socially: •Social skills group. There are social skills groups run by professionals who can help teenagers master appropriate behavior and interactions. While at first, these groups might be intimidating to children who are socially awkward, with time they provide a community of people who help each other learn and grow. •Reward proper personal hygiene. Hygiene is an easy “social skill” to help your child master because it is concrete rather than abstract. Create a chart with your child with all of different elements of personal hygiene (teeth-brushing, showering, nail clipping, deodorant, hair-combing). Then, set goals with your daughter that when achieved she gets rewarded for. While she might not be aware of her lack of grooming, her peers will certainly notice the change. •Help her find children with similar interests. If your daughter loves art or music, consider signing her up for an after school activity (preferably not offered by her school at first) in which she can meet other children who share her interests. These shared interests will create a common ground and help your daughter bond with her peers. •Do not “go back to school” yourself. As painful as it is to watch your child struggle socially, if you step in to smooth over socially awkward moments, your daughter will not learn how to do this herself. Therefore, unless the situation is painful or dangerous, keep out of the situation while it is happening. Feel free to talk about it with your daughter before and after, but getting involved at the moment will only stunt her social progress. Socially awkward children do not have to turn into socially awkward adults, with intervention and patience, they can make friends and live fuller lives.

The Junior Diplomats Recap: Jake and Eli are locked into a room by their captors. They realize that the listening devices in the Katz home have begun to work and their captors can now overhear everything.
The conversation within the Katz living room was going no place. But outside, on the street beyond their home and the apartment that Eli and Jake were being held in, something was clearly going on. The man in gray, whom Rachel had noticed at about 10:15, was still outside, doing nothing, an hour later. Not that he was loitering. No, he was simply sitting in a nondescript car, in nondescript clothing, reading a newspaper. He’s probably an undercover policeman, Rachel thought. Or a detective. The thing was that her father hadn’t brought the police into the story yet, as far as she knew. Which was strange, since kidnaping was illegal and the police might have been able to help them. There was surely enough evidence of the fact that the boys were being held in the house across the street against their will. So why hadn’t her father brought the cops in? And who was the man across the street really? “We need to draw up a plan,” Kobi said, from his seat near Rachel’s father at the dining room table. Rachel moved away from the window with a sigh.
out?” Rachel asked. Lillian nodded. Rachel was silent. She watched her father tap the house phone beside him. One minute… Since when did her father even use the house phone? He always said that the house phone was for the kids because his line of work disallowed conversations on an ordinary house phone. That was the way that things had worked back in Holland, and it was surely the way that they worked in their current home in Austria. So then why had Mr. Katz chosen today, of all days, to keep the home phone in plain view? Not that he was even speaking into it. No, if anything he had the on button on as if he wanted someone to overhear his conversation with Kobi and Yoav — but it was a conversation that should have been kept completely confidential because it involved rescue plans for Eli and Jake. “Right,” Mr. Katz told Kobi and Yoav now. “We do need to draw up a plan and that plan needs to take nighttime into account. Rescue missions are best pulled off under cover of darkness.”
“You think they’ll finally do something?” Lillian whispered.
“Nightfall tonight is around 5:30 p.m.,” Yoav said. “We’ll wait until then to pull off our rescue mission.”
“You mean you also think they’re schlepping the planning stage

Chapter 24 of helplessness on their faces. The agents’ plan sounded horrible! How could the men even consider waiting until nightfall to rescue the boys? What if something terrible happened to them while the sun was still out?! It wasn’t as if they were being held in an unknown place — they were right there across the street. Why didn’t the men just get up and do something? The atmosphere in the room was one of tense preparedness. Tension because nothing was being done just then. Preparedness because some sort of plan was being discussed. “That makes sense,” Mr. Green said slowly. “But obviously we’ll shift gears if the boys somehow come home on their own before it grows dark.” “I doubt that they will,” Mrs. Green murmured. “According to what Rachel told us, that seems unlikely.” She sighed. “I’m starting to think we should just go to the police with all of this.” Mr. Green nodded in agreement, while Mrs. Katz extended her hand to stroke Mrs. Green’s shoulder. Rachel’s stomach twisted. Her mother didn’t seem to agree with Mrs. Green’s idea, but she still seemed eager to offer her sympathy. Or perhaps she was somehow telling her not to worry. Mr. Katz tapped the side of the house phone again. Yoav and Kobi moved on to discussing the pros and cons of bringing more men onto the scene. “I think it’s unnecessary,” Yoav finally said decisively. “At five o’clock p.m. we’ll gear up. Yair will stay here while Kobi and I head across the street with guns and a megaphone. We’ll announce that two boys are being held hostage and must be released or we’ll shoot. The building’s residents will be home at that time of day, so we’ll have civilian support available, just in case that become a necessity.” At least a plan is finally starting to take on shape, Rachel thought. But for some reason she longed to jot notes down in her Notebook of Suspicions. Yoav’s eyes had darted around the room wildly as he announced his words, and that seemed strangely suspicious. Never mind the fact that all manner of oomph seemed to be missing from his words. Mr. Katz tapped the house phone once again. Just. One. Minute, Rachel thought. That phone was tapped. Her father knew that. And yet he was actively planning a rescue mission, even though his enemies could overhear every word. Clearly her father’s plans were meant to throw the boys’ captors off their scent, while leaving room for another plan to unfold in the spoken plan’s stead.
Heart racing, Rachel hurried over to the window to check her theory. Lillian and Becky both followed her. The man in the nondescript gray clothing was still there. He was sitting behind the wheel of his car, perusing his newspaper — while keeping an eye on everything and everyone on the block. Rachel could see that clearly now, and it was apparent to her that the man was there on an official mission. Was his mission perhaps to make sure that no strangers entered or exited the building that the boys were in? A truck rumbled onto the block. It was a Wiene Electrik truck, a truck that serviced the local electric company. The truck pulled up to building twenty-two, where Jake and Eli were being held, and two men jumped out. The men headed to the electric pipes on the outside of the building and began examining them. One of the men shook his head. He seemed to be saying that the issue that they’d come to fix was sourced in the building, not outside it. The second man nodded. Slowly, the men headed toward the front door of the building, and one of the men pressed the bell. A moment later they were buzzed in. Out of sight, out of mind. Only they weren’t. For some reason, Rachel was sure that that despite the plans being drawn up around her family’s dining room table, the true plan was actually in the offing right there across the street. “Look,” Lillian said suddenly, pointing. “That man looks funny, doesn’t he?” Rachel looked at the man who Lilian was pointing toward. It was the man in the car, and he was still holding the newspaper that he’d started reading an hour ago. His position as he read however, was strange. It was almost as though his mind was elsewhere, and not on the news in the paper. He was also wearing sunglasses now, which he hadn’t been wearing earlier. Perhaps those sunglasses had a reflective mirror in them, Rachel thought suddenly. She’d seen a pair of sunglasses like that once at a spy museum and if the man were wearing a pair like that then the mirror in the glass area would allow him to keep tabs on people on the street behind him. The men who’d come out of the truck earlier were completely out of view by now, but had the man in the car seen them somehow. Were the two scenes that she and Lillian had witnessed on the block intertwined, or were they completely unrelated? Somehow, Rachel had a feeling that it was all connected To be continued...

My sister need new shoes. One Sunday we decided to get her new shoes. We entered the store, and scanned the large array of shoes. There was a huge variety to choose from, and she was able to try on multiple pair of shoes.Like most families, we all give her our opinions, get this one, don’t get this one etc. After a while of choosing, she finally choose a beautiful pair of shoes. We headed toward the register to pay for the shoes. There was a small line, and so we waited our turn patiently. While waiting on line, my mothers eyes darted around the room, and she came across a sign that said that all shoes in the store were on sale. There we were standing on line ready to pay full price for a pair of shoes. Yet, Hashem in His infinite kindness, made the store have a sale, so we can get it for cheaper. We could’ve visited a different store that day, and pay full price for shoes, maybe even the exact same ones, but Hashem didn’t want us to, so He made us walk into that exact store so will be able to buy shoes during the sale. He also made my sister need new shoes right then, when a sale was going on. The ways of Hashem are truly incredible.

Instructions:
Step #1
Prepare the Apples Wash and thoroughly dry the apples. Insert wooden sticks or popsicle sticks into the stem end of each apple and set aside.
Step #2
Prepare the Candy Coating In a medium-sized saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water over medium-high heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and let the mixture come to a boil. The mixture then needs to reach a temperature of 300°F. Check this by inserting a candy thermometer into the saucepan. Note: If you don’t have a candy thermometer, test the temperature of the syrup by dropping a spoonful into a cup of cold water. If the syrup is at the desired temperature it should form brittle strands in the water, and, when removed, those strands should crack when bent.

Add Color If the candy mixture is at the desired temperature, turn the flame off under the saucepan and add drops of your favorite food coloring, stirring well.

Dip the Apples Dip apples into the mixture, one at a time, coating fully by tilting the saucepan. Allow excess candy coating to drip back into the saucepan.

Cool the Apples Place the coated apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet or a silicone mat to cool and harden. Make sure the apples don’t touch each other to prevent sticking and allow them to cool completely.
Step #6
Melt Chocolate Melt chocolate or candy melts according to the package instructions. This will serve as “glue” and additional embellishments.

Remarkable Achdus at Upcoming Dirshu Convention, as Gedolei Yisrael and Lomdei Dirshu Representing All Shevatim in Klal Yisrael Gather Together Historic First Amud HaYomi Siyum on Masechta Brachos on Thursday Night Where Knessiah Gedolah was Held

Every Dirshu Convention is a unique spiritual experience, but this year’s convention will have an added dimension - a special, Thursday night, historic Grand Siyum, the first siyum in the inaugural machzor of the new Amud HaYomi program. The Grand Siyum on Masechta Brachos, the first masechta in Shas, will be held at the Armon Hotel in Stamford, Connecticut on 13 Adar I/February 22. This singular event to be held on Thursday night at the outset of the Convention, will be a first in Dirshu Convention history. The siyum will celebrate the new “Yomi” that has taken Klal Yisrael by storm with tens of thousands of participants the world over. Numerous leading Gedolei Yisrael will address the siyum. There will also be a siyum on Masechta Bava Kama in the Daf HaYomi program on Motzoei Shabbos at the gala melava malka that will be held in the main ballroom of the Armon Hotel. At the Amud HaYomi Siyum on Thursday night, the actual hadran and siyum will be made by HaGaon HaRav Hillel David, shlita, Yoshev Rosh of the Vaad Roshei Yeshiva of Torah Umesorah, a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah, and Rav of Kehillas Yeshiva Shaarei Torah of Brooklyn. The venerated Rav David, one of the senior Gedolim of America, has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Amud HaYomi. It was Rav David who delivered a historic pesicha shiur on Masechta Brachos several months ago when the program was inaugurated and it is thus eminently appropriate that he should make the siyum. There will also be a special guest Gadol from Eretz Yisrael gracing the siyum with a keynote address, HaGaon Hatzaddik HaRav Shimon Galei, shlita. Rav Shimon, who is himself a Daf HaYomi B’Halacha maggid shiur, will share his feelings of chizuk after personally witnessing the remarkable revolution in Eretz Yisrael where over 500 Amud HaYomi shiurim have opened across the length and breadth of the country. Participants at that siyum will have the distinctive opportunity to hear from HaGaon HaRav David Ozeri, shlita, Rav of the Yad Yosef Torah Center of Brooklyn, and HaGaon HaRav Shimon Zev Meisels, Rav of Beis Medrash Yismach Yisroel in Kiryas Yoel and a son-in-law of the Satmar Rebbe, shlita, and the Nasi of Dirshu, HaRav Dovid Hofstedter, shlita.
A Convention that Defies Description Of course, Shabbos itself at the Dirshu Convention is so deeply inspiring that it is difficult to encapsulate with words. A Dirshu Convention is unique. It is a microcosm of the achdus through Torah that symbolizes the most beautiful qualities of Am Yisrael. It is a convention where men and women representing the entire gamut of Torah Jewry – Chassidim of all kinds, Litvish Yeshiva types, Ashkenazim, Sefardim – come together for one reason: to give and gain chizuk in the limud haTorah that both the men and women who attend know has transformed their homes, their family lives and the chinuch of their children. With the addition of the monthly Amud HaYomi tests this year, thousands of new test takers have joined the ranks of Dirshu and have begun to feel the taam of life as a “Dirshu Yid.” In addition, the wives of lomdei Dirshu walk away from Shabbos on a high. Not only are they deeply inspired by the special women’s programing but perhaps even more so, from meeting other distinguished wives and mothers who truly understand what it means to be part of Dirshu with the inherent thrill of witnessing the hatzlacha of their husbands and/or sons after a test; or upon completion of a masechta, recognizing how, through Dirshu, the entire family becomes elevated and closer to Hashem. A Shabbos of Highlights One of the highlights of the Dirshu Convention that the lomdim look forward to is the iyun shiur delivered by a prominent Rosh Yeshiva. In past conventions, shiurim were delivered by such lumi-
naries as HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Yaakov Borenstein, zt”l, whose shiur riveted the tzibbur Who can forget the shiurim of HaGaon HaRav Berel Povarsky, shlita, or HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Feivel Schustal, shlita, at past conventions? This year, the shiur will be given by HaGaon HaRav Yitzchok Sorotzkin, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of the Mesivta of Lakewood, and author of the magnum opus sefarim Gevuras Yitzchok. At this year’s convention too, HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Feivel Schustal will be delivering a shiur on Friday. Another highlight of the convention in previous years has been the unique shailos and teshuvos sessions with two of the most prominent poskim of our times, HaGaon HaRav Reuven Feinstein, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Staten Island and HaGaon Harav Yeicheil Michel Steinmetz, shlita, senior Skverer Dayan of Boro Park. This year too, Rav Feinstein and Rav Steinmetz will be taking questions covering all aspects of halacha and hashkafa. This year’s convention will be graced by numerous Gedolei Yisrael that will also include, HaGaon HaRav Dovid Goldberg, shlita, HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Eisenberger, shlita, Roshei Yeshiva of the Telshe Yeshiva of Cleveland, the Kossover Rebbe, shlita, HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Choeuka, shlita, Rav of Beit Haknesset Ohel Simha of Deal, NJ, HaGaon HaRav Nissan Kaplan, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Daas Aharon, and numerous others. At the Motzoei Shabbos Melava Malka Siyum on Masechta Bava Kama, Rav Dovid Goldberg, Rosh Yeshivas Telshe, the Kossover Rebbe, Rav Shraga Feivish Hager, Rav Nissan Kaplan, and Rav Dovid Hofstedter will address the massive crowd. The hadran on Masechta Bava Kama will be given by HaRav Moshe Mordechai Lowy, shlita, Rav of the Agudas Yisrael of Toronto. On Shabbos, between Kabbolas Shabbos and Maariv, Rav Nissan Kaplan will address the massive assemblage in the tent erected to enable all participants to daven b’achdus comfortably. Rav Yitzchok Sorotzkin will also deliver an important drasha at the Friday night seuda. A highlight of the Shabbos promises to be the Sheves Achim on Friday night following the seuda where Rav Yechiel Mechel Steinmetz, Rav Shmuel Choueka, and Rav Yisrael Moshe Olewski, the Rosh Yeshiva of the Gerer Yeshiva in Boro Park, will address the crowd. On Shabbos morning, Rav Dovid Hofstedter, Nasi of Dirshu is slated to deliver a lomdishe shiur, both a hadran on the Daf HaYomi of Masechta Bava Kama and a haschala on Masechta Shabbos with the Amud HaYomi. Following Mincha the climactic shalosh seudos is held, during which time all the men gather to sit together at this most hallowed time of Shabbos and hear divrei chizuk. Concurrently, there is a special ladies’ shalosh seudos program. This year, shalosh seudos will be addressed by HaRav Yitzchok Zalman Gips, shlita, Rav of Khal Birkas Avrohom of Boro Park. Rav Gips is a popular Dirshu Amud HaYomi and Daf HaYomi B’Halacha maggid shiur. Shmuessen will be delivered by Rav Shlomo Eisenberger, Rav Yechiel Mechel Steinmetz and Rav Moshe Benzion Weinberger, Rav of the Agudah of Flatbush. The response from lomdei Dirshu has been so overwhelming. Thousands of reservations have poured in from people wanting to attend the convention. Dirshu has booked and sold out both the Armon and Marriot Hotels. Those wishing to participate in the Amud HaYomi siyum on Masechta Brachos on Thursday night can still RSVP and attend.

This is an event with no agenda other than increasing limud haTorah - no political agenda, no fundraising or organizational agenda. It is, simply put, a celebration of dedication to learning. We are just coming to celebrate with Yidden who have invested days and nights over many years to learn, chazer and be tested. How can I not come?!”

Decorate the Clown Face Decorate the candied apples with your choice of candies, using the melted cholate to “glue” the embellishments and add splashes of color to the color. Use the decorating suggestions below, or come up with your own:
Eyes: Use melted white chocolate to form circles and place small dark cholate chips in the center of each one.
Nose: Place a small, colorful M&M in the center of the apple. Mouth: Use colored icing or frosting to draw a smiling mouth. Add cute details like a red tongue or teeth.
Hair: Create the clown’s hair using colorful candies or licorice strips. Attach with chocolate to the top of the apple.

WEIGHT LOSS FOR NURSING MOMS Women who give birth (minus a few very lucky ones) have weight to lose. Nursing moms have added challenges. Since nursing burns a lot of calories, moms who nurse tend to feel much hungrier. Exhaustion (typical for new moms) is also a weight loss barrier, both physiologically and mentally. Physiologically, it is hard for the body to burn calories when it is tired. Mentally, it is very hard for us to make good food choices when we are exhausted. Here are tips to combat some of a nursing mother’s challenges. Practical tips and suggestions: 1) A nursing mom should be eating an extra 500 calories a day! This is even more than the 300 calories recommended for a pregnant woman. Nursing burns a lot of calories, and those calories need to be replaced. The key is to use these calories wisely and make good choices. You will be a lot more satisfied with an extra piece of grilled chicken and an extra serving of rice versus a bag of potato chips or chocolate. 2) Be very prepared for nighttime nursing. Have cut-up veggies and fruits in the refrigerator. This way if you do start opening the fridge in search of “something” you are more likely to choose less damaging food. If you give the baby a bottle in the middle of the night, keep a small refrigerator and hot water upstairs. One client was great on her food plan all day and always cheated at night when going downstairs to make the baby a bottle. Once she began keeping the items she needed upstairs, she saved herself a trip downstairs (and the extra calories). 3) Stay busy while nursing. In an ideal world, you are supposed to bond with your baby for the entire duration of the nursing session. In real life, this does not always happen. Many women tell me they get “bored” or “restless” while nursing and end up munching the wrong foods. My suggestion is to plan ahead with things to do. Listen to a lecture, make some calls you need to handle, prepare books and magazines you might want to read, etc. You can also sing or read to the baby as well.
Happy Nursing! (And getting back to yourself!) 5 MORE TIPS FOR STEADY WEIGHT LOSS AFTER A BABY 1) Nursing is NOT a reason to “eat for two” again. Nursing moms require an average of an extra 500 calories a day. That’s 500 extra healthy calories and not more. 2) Change your attitude and the number on the scale will change too. So often I hear women saying they don’t think they can ever look the way they did before the baby, at their wedding, etc. My response to that is “Why not”? Anyone at any stage or age can be in shape. In fact, many of my clients will say they look and feel better than they did before their baby. 3) Monitor, monitor, monitor. In order to succeed, you must have a system of tracking progress. Some examples of monitoring include a weekly weigh-in, monthly measuring of inches and body fat, tracking food in a journal, or ideally, all three. 4) Stop waiting for it to come off “on its own” or “melt away.” Have you noticed that it’s not going to happen? Okay, there are a few very lucky people to whom it may happen. Chances are that you (and I) are not one of them. There are no shortcuts or magic to getting in shape. 5) Don’t forget to exercise. Dieting is important and if you are eating right, you will see the results on the scale. However, if you want your “old body” back (or even a better one), exercise is the key. Strength training, weight lifting, and Pilates are examples of workouts that will firm you up, help you lose inches, and get rid of that unwanted flab. Make sure to take some time and care of yourself. A healthy and fit mommy is a happy one. 👶👶👶 👶👶👶 👶👶👶

directions 1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF (175ºC) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In a bowl, toss together all the ingredients. 3. Transfer to the baking sheet and spread evenly. 4. Bake for five minutes, remove from the oven and stir, then bake for another five minutes. 5. Let the pecans cool down before serving and enjoy!

The Interview Chashie Stern
There comes a time in many a young lady’s life when she will be put on the spot to answer some life-altering questions. She will be preened and primed and primped for this exceptional moment by her parents, teachers, and mentors. And she will be well-trained to make nary a flinch during her moment of truth, or rather, moment of purported truth —as I’ve come to learn. And this remarkable occasion, as any female high-school senior — or her mother — may have already guessed, is none other than her seminary interview. I was graciously put to the task of acting the part of Senior at Her Seminary Interview while my lovely daughter played the part of Seminary Principal. She asked the prospective questions that her high school principal had told her would be asked — in lieu of her principal going to the interview and answering those questions herself. “How should I answer these questions?” I asked. “I mean, I can just tell the truth! What’s the big deal?” “Are you kidding?” My daughter retorted. “No one says the truth at a seminary interview! You give the answers the principal wants to hear! Otherwise, you’ll never get–“ “Hold on!” I interrupted. “You mean all the girls have to sound exactly the same?” “Duh.” “No, that can’t be right. Don’t they want color? Diversity? Authenticity?” “They don’t want color. They want black. Which reminds me, where are those ugly black loafers I put in your closet, Mommy?” Okay, so I was about to give answers that would sound like everyone else’s—as a preparation for my daughter’s upcoming role. Taking my role seriously now, I squared my shoulders and sat down at the dining room table after clearing away the dirty supper dishes (okay, plasticware) first, and making a show of wiping away the post-tornado-like debris. And, let me tell you, it was a sobering experience. The interview, not the table clearing. As for all you curious folks who have not yet been to a seminary interview, I will graciously share

Roasted Veggies, Chick peas, and Cranberries 3 SERVINGS
1 HOUR
INGREDIENTS 1 bag frozen mini Cauliflower florets 1 Sweet Potato (small, cubed) 1 Yellow Onion (medium, chopped) 1 1/2 cups Chickpeas (cooked, rinsed) 2 Tbsp Fresh Sage (finely chopped) 3 Tbsp Rosemary (fresh) 1 1/2 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil Sea Salt & Black Pepper (to taste) 3/4 cup Frozen Cranberries (defrosted)
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Add the cauliflower, sweet potato, onion, chickpeas, sage, rosemary, oil, salt, and pepper to the baking sheet. Toss to combine then spread everything out into an even layer. 3. Roast for 20 minutes then toss the vegetables. 4. Add the cranberries and roast for another 25 to 30 minutes or until the vegetables are tender and caramelized. Divide between plates and enjoy!

Passable: I love learning, and I enjoy spending time with my family – but only after I finish my schoolwork! Why do you want to come to our seminary? Possible: So my principal recommended it for, you know, girls like me… But the truth is that most of the seminaries sound exactly the same. And, honestly, yours is third on my list because I was told the food is a little iffy. If you know what I mean… Passable: I’m so impressed by the girls who have graduated from your seminary. They’re aidel, refined, tznius, and virtual fountains of Tanach. What more can a girl ask for? Would you describe yourself as an introvert or an extrovert? Passable: Because, as an eighth grader, I heard that the graduates of this Bais Yaakov display sterling middos and exemplary Rashi skills. If you could change something about your high school years, what would it be? Possible: OMG, the options are endless! Let’s see, I’d start with canceling all homework and tests, renovating the bathrooms, and I’d for sure expell those snobs in the middle row... Passable: I would have added a night seder to the curriculum. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Possible: Chilling with my friends, music, and Slurpees. Passable: Baking for Shabbos, reviewing my Chumash notes, and babysitting so that my mother can take a nap. Tell me about your family. If I walked into your house, what would I see? Possible: Um… Please don’t! But if you insist, please come only on a Thursday afternoon after the cleaning lady has left and before everyone has come home from school. Certainly do NOT come on a Wednesday, the farthest day from when the cleaning lady comes, and not on erev Shabbos when you might get hit on the head by my brother’s shoe as he kvetches about doing his erev Shabbos jobs. Passable: My father would be learning with my

Vibes of Humor brothers at the dining room table, my mother would be baking cinnamon buns while holding the baby and humming “A Yid Never Breaks,” and the little ones would be playing together with mitzvah mentchies. I would, of course, be helping my mother bake, with my ear perked wistfully towards the learning in the dining room. Where does your family come from? Possible: Is this, like, a yichus question? Probably from Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, no? But I can send you a copy of the family tree my sister made last year if you really want it — although my little brother cut off my father’s side of the family by accident . Passable: Reb Akiva Eiger, for sure. Do you consider yourself a leader, follower, or supporter? Possible: That depends entirely on who’s running GO. Like, if they’re capable and take us on good trips, then I’ll be a follower. But if the only thing they do is give out apricots on Tu b’Shevat then I may change my mind. Know what I mean? Passable: I’m a leader over my yetzer hara, a follower of the Torah, and a supporter of your seminary. Where do you see yourself in ten years? Possible: Tanning on a Caribbean cruise. Seriously, how am I supposed to know? Hashem’s in charge! Passable: Teaching Chumash and supporting my Kollel husband and children. What do you plan to do after seminary? Possible: Come home, clean my room (that my sisters will no doubt mess up while I’m away), and go on a diet. Passable: Teach in the local Bais Yaakov and start shidduchim.

How do you think you would enjoy dorm life? Possible: That would clearly depend on who my roommates are. Is now a good time to put in my requests? Passable: Sharing my things and space with other girls, reviewing mefarshim with friends (eyes should take on a dreamy look here), I mean, what can be better? If you could be any animal, which would you choose to be? Possible: Now what kind of question is that? Passable: A camel, of course. So that I can carry the heavy loads of others. What is your greatest weakness? Possible: Definitely kibbud av v’em. Like, when my mother wore that horrendous sweater and I gave her this withering look, refusing to get into the car until she took it off. Let’s just say she wasn’t too happy about that. Passable: My greatest weakness is when I get so wrapped up in my Chumash that I don’t notice when my parents walk into the room, and I miss the opportunity to stand up for them. *** There you have it, future seminary-applicants, free of charge.
