A
s a child growing up, if there was one night of the year that I looked forward to most, it was motza’ei Shabbos Chanukah. There might have been other close seconds (the Seder nights come to mind here), but motza’ei Shabbos Chanukah was special because it featured The Grand Family GetTogether with a host of fun games and prizes. The emcee of the evening was a beloved aunt, and her games and emceeing hit the spot for me every year. Fast-forward a decade or two to Chanukahs in my own home. Living in a different country than most of my extended family, joining in the grand motza’ei Shabbos Chanukah bash has never been an option. What has been an option is making smaller, less-extravagant parties in my own home — but the feeling that I’m somehow missing out on The Grand Event has been strong all these years. Until this year, when I had a brainstorm. I couldn’t partake in The Chanukah Party, that was true, but with several “of-age” children in my own home, I could create my own Chanukah party tradition. Gathering my crew together, I excitedly told them of my plan. “You know those exciting Chanukah parties that I reminisce about every year? Well, we’re going to have an exciting Chanukah party in our house — every night — which you kids will plan.” So saying, I divided the nights of Chanukah so that every kid (over a certain age) got one night to plan a party for. The idea worked marvelously — until the last night of Chanukah. That was my night. And the combination of general hecticness at home and the fact that it was erev Shabbos (Zos Chanukah was on a Friday this year) made it that the game I’d planned came out a lot less
perfectly than I’d imagined it would. This, coupled with the range of ages in my home (the game would have probably worked better if all the players were the same age), could have turned the evening into a disaster. But, fortunately, my oldest daughter came right to the rescue. “Just play along and have a good time,” Daughter A told Daughter B. “But—” Daughter B began, getting ready to cite all the reasons the game wasn’t working out. “But that’s the only way we’ll have a good time,” Daughter A cut her off. And she was right. Camaraderie and good sportsmanship will go a long way in making any game work. Ultimately, the last night of Chanukah was an enjoyable one for my family, and the game worked out just fine, even if it didn’t follow all the rules of the book. The idea of good sportsmanship is an important one — and it’s especially relevant when the game or sport veers somewhat from the norm. This week’s feature on unusual competitions and races is all about those off-the-beatentrack competitions, and then some… Remember, no matter how peculiar life might get, good sportsmanship and an aura of adaptability will go a long way. Enjoy the article, and tell us about exciting games and contests you’ve played with your family. And while we’re on the subject of races — keep those forms for our contests coming! VA’ EIRA Vayeishev Anyone Can Be Like Moshe Rabbeinu The Rambam writes that every individual in Klal Yisrael can be like Moshe Rabbeinu. How is this possible? Rav Elchonon Wasserman explains that anyone who uses the talents that Hashem has given him and reaches all that he can attain has reached Moshe Rabbeinu’s level.
(chapter 4) tells an unbelievable story proving that Moshe Rabbeinu reached his potential through hard work and good choices. When Moshe Rabbeinu took B’nei Yisrael out of Mitzrayim, the nations of the world heard and wondered who this miracle man was.
Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky would tell parents to educate every child as if he will be a future Moshe Rabbeinu. He would support his words with a halachah from the Rama that states that it’s forbidden to give a Jewish child to a non-Jewish nursemaid if there’s any possibility to receive milk from a Jewish mother — just as Moshe Rabbeinu didn’t nurse from a nonJewish woman.
One Arab king decided to send an expert artist to draw Moshe’s likeness and show it to him. The artist traveled, drew a portrait of Moshe, and returned to the king. The king called all his advisors who understood physiognomy — the practice of assessing a person’s character or personality from their outer appearance, especially the face — and asked them to describe the nature of the man in the picture. They unanimously agreed that the picture represented a low-life individual, someone haughty, with a great lust for money.
The Vilna Gaon remarks that the source for this is in the midrash that relates that Moshe Rabbeinu refused to nurse from an Egyptian woman because he was destined to speak with the Shechinah. Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky asks: If, according to the midrash, Moshe wouldn’t eat from a non-Jewish woman because of his future, how can we learn a halachah from this that’s relevant for every child? Maybe this was only applicable tor Moshe? From here we learn a tremendous foundation in educating our children: Every child must receive his education today as if he is destined to speak to the Shechinah in the future. Because, in fact, every child is suitable to reach the level of speaking with the Shechinah. Rav Moshe Feinstein spoke about this idea as well. In this week’s parashah, after listing the sons of Levi, the pasuk says, “This is Aharon and Moshe” (Shemos 6:26). Rashi comments that there are places where Aharon is mentioned before Moshe, and places where Moshe is mentioned before Aharon. This is to teach us that they’re of equal importance. How, asks Rav Moshe, is it possible to claim that Moshe and Aharon were equal? Moshe was the greatest navi of all time, who spoke to Hashem face-to-face. He was the conduit through whom Hashem chose to give the Torah. Is it possible to say that Aharon was equal to him? Rav Moshe answers that both Moshe and Aharon accomplished what they were meant to accomplish in this world, and nothing was lacking in their own personal mission. Even though Moshe’s abilities were greater, and therefore he performed very significant tasks, both dedicated themselves completely to what they were supposed to do. Each one used his strengths to the maximum — and in that way they were equal. The Talmud Yerushalmi (Horayos 18:2) relates that when Moshe went up to Shamayim for forty days and nights to learn and receive the Torah, he couldn’t retain what Hashem was teaching him. At the end of the forty days, he received the entire Torah as a gift and no longer forgot anything. Why, the Yerushalmi asks, was this the way things took place? Why did Moshe forget again and again, until Hashem granted him the knowledge as a gift? The Yerushalmi answers, “In order to bring back the foolish ones.” Imagine Moshe’s distress. He was sitting in the heavens, learning the holy Torah from Hashem. However, every time he asked himself a question, tested himself on what he’d learned, he came up with nothing. It must have been an excruciating experience to realize that he was forgetting everything he was working so hard to attain. Why did Hashem have to do it this way? Because it would serve as encouragement and hope for anyone with weaker talents and capabilities who feels he can’t learn or that he forgets constantly. Moshe forgot forty times and tried over and over — until, finally, he received the Torah as a gift. We must be encouraged not to give up no matter how challenging our struggles become. The Tiferes Yisrael, in his commentary on the mishnah in Kiddushin
The king was furious. “Why are you making fun of me?” he demanded. “This man is known far and wide as a great, respectable leader.” The advisors were frightened and didn’t know what to answer. When the king questioned the artist, the latter claimed that the picture was accurate and that the advisors were making a mistake. The king, determined to figure out who, in fact, was right, rode with his horses and entourage to the Jewish encampment. When he arrived, he caught a glimpse of Moshe from afar. He compared Moshe to the image the artist had created and saw that they were one and the same. Now he was completely baffled. He went to Moshe in his tent and told him the whole story. He explained that he had believed that his artist had erred. Now that he saw Moshe, he concluded that his advisors must have tricked him. Moshe answered him, “No, neither the artist nor your advisors are mistaken. Both are experts. All the weaknesses that they saw are part of my nature, which is possibly even worse than what they told you. But with determination and strength, I have worked to overcome my inclinations, and I have acquired a different nature. Because of that, I am who I am today.” Rav Zilberstein explains the Rambam above and encourages us that if we use our potential and strengths, like Moshe Rabbeinu did, we will merit tremendous siyatta d’Shmaya that will enable us to reach our true levels in serving Hashem. This is a powerful message for all of us as we strive to serve Hashem. Hashem has tremendous love for every individual Jew, and the kedushah of every soul is beyond our imagination. Sometimes, it can be disheartening to watch a fellow student grasp a concept immediately. Or it may not be our strength to create the culinary delicacy our neighbor whips up so easily. It’s crucial to remember that the klal is comprised of individuals, each with his own vital mission and role. There can be nine of the greatest tzaddikim in a room, but it takes a tenth Jew to form a minyan so Kedushah and Kaddish can be recited — even if this tenth Jew is simple and unlearned. Each and every one of us is that tenth Jew, a precious and unique part of Klal Yisrael. There’s no reason for jealousy or despair. If we use the strengths Hashem has given us, we too can access our potential, become like Moshe Rabbeinu, and merit help from Above. The Maharil Diskin, The Saraph of Brisk (1818–1898) Shira Yael Klein Reb Yehoshua Yehuda Leib Diskin, also known as the Maharil Diskin, was a rav in Łomża, Mezritch, Kovno, Shklov, and Brisk. In 1878 he moved to Yerushalayim, where he became the rav and thus a leader of the Old Yishuv. In 1881 he opened the Diskin Orphan Home. *** The Maharil Diskin once said to his student Reb Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, “Let me tell you a chassidishe maiseh. “One of the residents of Kovno came to me. He was a poor man who eked out a meager living by selling a few fruits and vegetables in the market. He would earn two or three rubles a week, and his family just barely managed to scrape by. Then this man’s father passed away.“
When the congregants woke him up, he said, ‘My father appeared to me suddenly and yelled at me for not listening to him.’ The congregants brought the man to the Maharil’s house.

Bring it back to Kovno, and have it shechted by a shochet with yiras Shamayim. The rav should stand there and answer amen to the shochet’s berachah. Distribute the meat to Jews. Only that way will I have my tikkun. “The dream repeated itself for three nights, but the man didn’t pay attention to it. “One day, while the man was davening from the amud, he suddenly fainted. 26

The man returned to Kovno with the black ox in tow. Everyone came to see the dream play out. The ox was shechted and found to be kosher, and its meat was distributed to talmidei chachamim in the city. “Even I got some of the meat,” concluded the Maharil Diskin.

Chapter 19 RECAP: Nachman, Debbie, and Rikki meet Jamie, the worker from the bowling alley, af ter closing hour. He pulls up the CCT V footage from when Avi went missing…and discovers that someone deleted five minutes from the footage histor y — the five minutes that would show who Avi lef t with.
I stared at the screen as if that would make the missing Jamie took it, pushed it into the USB slot, and proceeded five minutes miraculously reappear. The Junior Diplomats
Recap: Eli finishes reading Rachel’s notebook, where she records her suspicions. Rachel had written that the Katzes’ trackers lives across the street from them, and Eli decides to spy on them. A security guard overhears these plans and clues in Mr. Katz.
Monday, 6:08 a.m. Eli’s rubber-soled sneakers glided across the hallway of his building before coming to a squeaking halt on the second-floor landing next to the spot where he and Jake had arranged to meet. A shadowy form stood there waiting. “Jake?” Eli whispered. “Is that you?” “Sh,” Jake hushed him. “You’ll wake up the whole building.” Eli shrugged. “The only people I’m scared of waking in this building are my parents, and my mother’s a really deep sleeper.” “What about your father?” “He left to work at six today as usual.”
Slowly, the boys descended the stairs leading to the exit of their building. Eli was uncharacteristically silent as he tried to figure out how much time had passed already. He should have told Rachel that they’d need forty minutes. A precious three minutes had already been wasted just meeting up with Jake. 6:11 Another two minutes passed as the boys headed across the street. Blockade. The door to the building was locked. Most buildings in Europe were locked to outsiders, but somehow, they’d forgotten to take such a hurdle into account. “What now?” Eli muttered. Time was passing far too quickly.
“Long workday.” Jake whistled.

“We’re about to find out exactly who he’s working for and why he has such long hours. I told you yesterday what I know and what I suspect, but now we need to confirm.”
Rachel was going to call their father before they even made any headway.
Yesterday, Jake had graciously agreed to hear Eli out when Eli and Rachel had returned from the embassy. He’d nodded his head and said “uh-huh” in all the appropriate places…until Eli had gotten up to the part where he’d told Rachel that he wanted to spy on the men across the street — together with his new best friend Jake. “That’s insane,” Jake had said at that point, and Eli had agreed with him.
6:16 6:17 There was no way the boys would be able to get into the locked building. It looked as if they’d have to abandon their original idea and come up with a Plan B. “Careful,” Jake suddenly called out.
But then Eli had explained to Jake that Rachel had agreed to act as a lookout person, counting a precise thirty minutes on her watch before they’d need to be back or else she’d call their father.
It took Eli a moment to figure out why.
After hearing that, Jake had grudgingly agreed to the adventure, but Eli could tell that his heart wasn’t truly into it.
The door was pulled open.
Somehow, Eli sensed that Jake was plagued by other demons and that the boy was trying to prove something to himself even as he joined Eli on this dangerous journey into the unknown.
There was suddenly a man in the glass pane of the front door of the building, and he was clearly preparing to head out to the street.
“What are you kids doing here?” the stern-looking man pronounced in German with annoyance, irately brushing past the two boys. Jake slipped his foot into the open doorway and motioned for Eli to slip

“Upstairs,” Eli mouthed.
Jake tugged Eli’s shirt. “Did you hear that?” he mouthed.
With Eli at the lead, the boys ascended to the second floor and drew to a halt in front of apartment six.
“Hear what?” Eli whispered back.
“The Veil Family,” proclaimed a nondescript door sign resting on the nondescript door. Jake and Eli exchanged glances. “A family?” Eli whispered. “This must be the wrong place. Maybe you were wrong yesterday with the way that you figured out which apartment overlooks mine and we really need a different apartment, like apartment seven or eight.” Jake shook his head. “No. It needs to be apartment six. This is the only apartment on this floor that’s positioned in a way that the people inside can see across the street to your house’s living room.” Chilling. “But what if they really live on the third floor, not the second,” Eli whispered. “Maybe Rachel and Lillian mixed things up.” Jake stared at Eli. “Okay, let’s go up to the third floor, then. The apartment over this one might also have a window that lets people see into your apartment.”
“That.” Jake pointed at the door, and Eli heard the sound of scratching, or something that sounded like scratching, from somewhere inside of apartment number six. “The men are up,” Jake whispered. Adrenaline coursing through his vein, Eli pressed his ear to the doorway. “Sh,” he mouthed. Jake stared at him. His face clouded with fear, and Eli’s stomach twisted. It wasn’t fair of him to have schlepped his friend out on such an impossible mission. “German,” Eli mouthed, taking pains to keep his voice inaudible. “They’re speaking in German.” On cue, he backed away from the door and made room for a frightened-looking Jake to take over. The American boy understood the language better than he did, and they both knew that. Jake silently furrowed his brow, concentrating intently on the few words that were being exchanged in the apartment.
The boys ascended another flight of stairs.
“Widerliche Juden… Herr Boss… Funktioniert immer noch nicht.”

Rachel would call Abba in another seventeen minutes. Her warnings that morning had left no room for doubtr.
The men sounded irate. And from the slight exchange of words that Jake and Eli managed to overhear, it was obvious that they had come to the right address.
Apartment nine was the apartment above apartment six. “Reiner Law Offices,” Eli read the door sign.
Still not working… That was probably a reference to the listening devices.
“These people can’t live in a law office,” Jake said.

“Unless the office is a front for something else,” Eli argued.
Unless he was home before then, in another eight minutes Rachel would call their father.
Jake pointed at a barred window that overlooked the hallway they were in. He shook his head. “Can’t be. This is the type of window that makes sense for an office, but bad guys would never want this kind of exposure. Let’s go back down.” The boys descended the stairwell once again. 6:24 They barely had time left for spying. If they were even right, and the bad buys indeed lived in apartment six. The Veil Family. The boys planted themselves next to the innocuous looking door sign and exchanged glances. What now? Jake expression seemed to say.
It would take four and a half minutes just to get back home. “Time to go,” Eli intoned. But his words were cut short by the sound of a door latch being drawn open. And suddenly two men stood framed in the doorway before them. “So,” one of the men said, his voice cold as ice. “Es sind die Judischen kinder — It’s the Jewish kids.”

Once my father was driving and his window was open for fresh air and all of the sudden he saw something by his face and heard a boom and saw something rolling away. After he drove back to the place and he saw a dead deer and the deer’s horns came right next to his head because the window was open. It was a big Nes that his window was open because the deer’s horns would’ve crashed open the window and the glass would’ve went everywhere and it could’ve been very dangerous.

Congratulations to our winner!
This past Sunday my mother picked me up from the Sunday clubs that I run and we went straight from there to pick up my cousins and bring them to my house. While driving my mother realized that she was almost completely out of gas and didn't have enough gas to get home. Bh we made it to the nearest gas station but then my mother realized that she left her pocketbook at home and the gas attendant wouldn't take a credit card number. We didn't know what to do. Just then I remembered that in the morning when I prepared my bag for clubs I put some money into my bag. I have no idea why I put the money in as I didn't need it for the day. BH I gave my mother the money and we were able to buy gas and make it home! Thank you Hashem!

On Sunday, my family went to Staples. We were shopping around for fun supplies and other things to buy. We were buying a lot of things and we were very distracted. We were ready to pay and my baby sister started to get kvetchy, so my mother took her out of the stroller and let her play around a bit on the floor. Meanwhile me and my father went to go pay. We waited on line and finally it was our turn. The cashier asked is if we want a bag and my father said we have so many, we don't need more. After we finished paying me and my father were waiting at the exit door for my mother to come with my baby. All the sudden the cashier came running to us and told us we left the soda stream by the counter and we didn't realize because we didn't have a bag. It was such hashgacha pratis that we were waiting because there was a long line and the cashier wouldn't have come and given it to us if we had already left the store. Thank you hashem that my baby was kvetchy, and we didn't leave yet because otherwise we would need to go back once we were already home.

Today’s game of RPS (rock, paper, scissors) is played by two people who simultaneously make hand gestures representing either a rock, a paper, or scissors. A rock beats scissors, scissors beat a paper, and a paper beats a rock. However, while the playing rules are simple, RPS enthusiasts say that far from being a game of luck, it takes brain power and strategy skills to win. RPS has become so popular in modern times that a World Rock Paper Scissors Association (WRPSA) has even been established. In 2014 WRPSA created a World Rock Paper Scissors Day on August 27 to encourage people to play this game. WRPSA also hosts huge tournaments in Canada, Europe, the US, and even a World Championship throughout the year. The cool news is that if you win the US RPS championship, you could win $50,000! In Japan, however, they take the game even further. During a massive Rock, Paper, Scissors contest, people show up in cool costumes from their favorite pop culture icons. Often, famous celebrities join in, and it can get so exciting that some players cry when they win!
In case you’re interested in where this ingenious and admittedly gross idea of racing cockroaches originates, you’ll have to go back in time to January 26, 1982, Australia Day, at the Story Bridge Hotel in Brisbane, Queensland. Two hotel visitors argued that their town’s cockroaches were the fastest in Brisbane. As neither guy could agree, they decided to test their claims in the hotel parking lot. The tradition caught on, and ever since then, annual cockroach races take place in Australia and all around the world, including in the United States. Of course, today these races are a lot more sophisticated. In Australia the race is referred to as “the greatest gathering of thoroughbred cockroaches in the world.” There are seven races throughout the country, with the main one, called the “Gold Cup Event,” taking place at the Story Bridge Hotel. At the large events, hundreds of gallons of cockroaches are spilled out for the race. (Hey, I bet if they ever have a cockroach shortage, New York City would be happy to send over their cockroaches!) Fun fact: Cockroaches can run up to 3 miles per hour (if they don’t have wings).

I hired a contractor to convert the garage of my Jackson Colonial, but first I showed the plans to Rivky. We completely revised them, redrawing the mudroom to clear up space and limit kitchen thru-traffic.

The Common Clownfish is a small fish, only about 4 inches long, typically found in tropical, warm waters in some oceans. They present an eye catching picture in beautiful contrasting colors: a deep orange body with 3 sharp white stripes (bordering the head, center body, and on the tail) finely outlined in black. The female clownfish is quite bigger than the male. The father clownfish will build a nest on a stone, right near or under the anamone where they live, so the babies should be protected. Then the mama clownfish will lay between 200 and )400 orange eggs (picture of hundreds of eggs - top left within a few hours. After approximately 6 to 8 days the baby fish will hatch. The father will monitor it most of the time. When the new babies emerge, they swim up to the ocean surface. After 10 days they return to the ocean floor to find an anamone home. Most won’t survive. Because common clownfish can’t move too far from the anamone, their main source of food is plankton, which are microscopic fish automatically shifted to the ocean bed by water movement. They will also eat some ocean plants which grow near their home. The common clownfish is stunning and that makes it a very popular choice for home fish tanks (both pictures bottom left). They also grace aquariums the world over.

The over 1,000 female attendees in the crowd, heard divrei chizuk from Rav Yonason Shippel. A live shadchanim panel moderated by the dynamic and entertaining Suri Messinger with Mrs. Bashie Saltzman, Mrs Sora Chana Krupenia, and Mrs. Sabrina Strickman. An animated shadchanim panel was featured as well with Rabbi’s Meir Levi, Shloimy Lewenstein, and Tzadok Katz. Easy no rise Pizza dough 3 Tbsp yeast 3 Cups warm water ½ Cup sugar 9 Cups flour 1 Cup oil 1 tsp salt
1. Put yeast and sugar in mixer bowl, pour warm water over, wait a few minutes until it bubbles. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms. 3. Roll out on a floured counter, put sauce and cheese on top. Add any toppings that you like. 4. Bake at 450° until brown.
