Confession: I’m a born-and-bred New Yorker, but with most of my family living in Eretz Yisrael these days, the number of times I’ve returned to the tristate area with any offspring in the past decade has been slim. My children, however, knowing that dinner was waiting for them in the main house (and that the view there would allow them to see the bear better) begged me to let them leave the cottage for that house — with the bear still poking around in the garbage. It was the type of adventure that will probably have my children referencing it even in five decades’ time. So what’s the connection between that trip and this week’s Lakewood Vibes? Admittedly, there’s no “real” connection. We visited New York and Pennsylvania during that trip, not New Jersey. Still, that trip was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this week’s Vibes of Interest and read about some of America’s loonier laws. Did you

And they associate the memory with words like “amusing” and “interesting” — not with “frightening” or even “scary.” Anything can go from frightening to interesting with a change in our perspective. For my children, being in adventure mode for three weeks of their lives is what made all the difference.

VAYECHI Vayeishev Accessing Our Strengths to Fulfill Our Mission

In this week’s parashah, Yaakov Avinu blesses his children shortly before his petirah. The pasuk says (Bereishis 49:28), “All these are the tribes of Israel, twelve, and this is what their father spoke to them, and he blessed them, each according to his blessing he blessed them.” Yaakov mentioned different attributes of the shevatim — such as Naftali’s speed like a deer, and Yisaschar’s ability to carry a heavy yoke (of Torah) just like a donkey — and these formed the bases of his blessings. Rav Wolbe explains in the name of Rav Yerucham Levovitz that the blessings Yaakov gave were according to each shevet’s inborn nature and middos. For example, Yosef’s abstinence from sin, which manifested itself during the incident with Potiphar’s wife, was part of his nature. Similarly, Yehudah, who is known for openly admitting to his actions, was born with this tendency to admit. If this is the case, why was Yosef called a tzaddik for what he did, and why did Yehudah merit kingship as a result of his act of greatness? From these details we learn an incredible lesson: The entire purpose of a person’s avodas Hashem is to use qualities unique to his nature. Through cultivating these attributes, he achieves completion in his avodas Hashem. This is seen earlier in the parashah as well, when Yosef shows displeasure at Yaakov placing his right hand on Ephraim, the younger of Yosef’s two sons. Yosef tries to change the position of his father’s hands, and Yaakov replies (Bereishes 48:19),

20

12/27/2023

“I know, my son, I know, he too will become a nation, and he too will become great; however, his younger brother will become greater than him.” How did this answer satisfy Yosef, who was requesting that Yaakov give the blessing to Menasheh, the older brother? Essentially, Yaakov was telling Yosef that he couldn’t change the order of the berachos because he could only give blessings according to each person’s strengths and nature — the attributes that would lead them to their specific destiny. Rav Wolbe quotes Rav Yerucham, who said, “Woe is to one who doesn’t recognize his weaknesses. However, even bigger is the woe to one who doesn’t recognize his strengths — because then he can’t work with the personal tools he has been given to serve Hashem.” Hashem created every one of us in a unique manner. We are born with different mazalos, talents, and character traits. HaKadosh Baruch Hu doesn’t want us to be carbon copies of each other. Rather, he wants each person to fulfill his own unique tafkid. The Gra in Mishlei (16:4) tells us that just as there are no two people born with the same face and every person has his own opinion, our natures are different as well. The purpose of our lives is to utilize our own strengths to complete our individual mission. In the time of Achav, the king of Yisrael, there was a man named Navos. Achav desired his vineyard, but Navos wasn’t willing to part with it, as it was an inheritance. Shortly afterward, Navos was put

I hired a contractor to convert the garage of my Jackson Colonial, but first I showed the plans to Rivky. We completely revised them, redrawing the mudroom to clear up space and limit kitchen thru-traffic.

My move was scheduled for Aseres Yemei Teshuva, and I work full time. But what should have been an enormous stress at a hectic time was a pleasure: I came home from work to a completely unpacked, organized house.

I was living in my house and simultaneously doing construction - It was a war zone. I then listened to the phone course and, magically, my house turned functional! I was so enthralled, I decided to train and help others.

The Shelf by Shelf laundry system is a game-changer. It is no longer daunting! I always thought each kid needed 9 outfits, and now I see less stuff equals less stress. I am loving this minimilist-like lifestyle.

I was on a 10-month salary and very concerned how I would manage in the summer. The SBS budget program helped me map out a monthly plan that was simple, clear and enabled me to save up. I felt empowered and calm.

to death by Achav. Although his death was obviously preordained, the mefarshim questioned why Navos deserved to die. The midrash explains that HaKadosh Baruch Hu had granted Navos an unusually beautiful voice unique to his generation. Three times a year, when the Yidden would go up to Yerushalayim, Navos would sing on Har HaBayis, and everyone would enjoy his songs. At some point, he was affected by the appreciation of the masses and was filled with egoistic pride. Subsequently, when the Yidden came to Yerushalayim, he didn’t want to cater to their needs, and refused to sing. HaKadosh Baruch Hu said, “You had a purpose in this world, and it was to make people happy. I gave you your talent for this reason. I’m the one who made your voice powerful, clear, and sweet. And now you’re preventing my creations from receiving what they deserve. I will take you back to me because you have no more purpose to live for in this world.” The story is told of Rav Naftali Amsterdam, who once said to his rebbe, Rav Yisrael Salanter, on Purim, “Rebbe, if I would have the head of the Shaagas Aryeh, Rebbe’s middos, and the heart of the Yesod v’Shoresh HaAvodah, I would be able to serve Hashem with record achievements.” Rav Yisrael gave the famous answer: “Naftali, you — with your head, your heart, and your middos — must serve Hashem to be who you are supposed to be.” Rabbi Akiva Tatz gives a mashal of someone placed on a building site with tools and an intelligent foreman to oversee the project. If he looks around and pays attention to what’s being built and what tools he was given, he’ll know what he needs to do. We too have been given the exact tools we need for our job. If we carefully examine our place in the world and our personal character tools, we’ll have a clear picture of who we are and what we’re meant to do. The Nesivos Shalom in Nesivei Da’as exhorts us to clarify the unique strengths Hashem has given us for the purpose of drawing near to him. If one doesn’t have this clarity, he’s like a blind man. He explains how to do this, citing the mishnah in Pirkei Avos (4:2), “Run to do an easy mitzvah.” Pay attention to what you find easy to do. What your heart is pulled

after is what your neshamah knows is good for you. Rav Pam taught that if one is inclined toward a specific mitzvah or area of Torah or tefillah, he must realize that through it he can build himself up and become great in all areas. He encouraged our generation to work on our strengths so as not to become weak or discouraged. Parents and educators are in a special position to notice and polish their children’s and student’s natures. With thought and determination, the natures our children present with from a young age can be cultivated positively. Rav Chaim Kanievsky said that when he was a child, his father, the Steipler, would give him “horseback rides” on his hands and knees with Rav Chaim on his back while testing him on mishnayos. The Steipler understood Rav Chaim’s nature and his need to be active, and provided the framework where he could succeed. Sometimes, when someone’s natural behavior is disturbing, it’s beneficial to take a step back and understand that although it may be inborn, it can be channeled constructively. One of my relatives was a precocious child who loved to deconstruct appliances. It was quite frustrating when he dismantled the oven to fix it and then didn’t know how to continue. His mother admitted that it was challenging to give him space without expressing frustration. Today, several years later, he’s the goto handyman and knows how to fix any appliance when it breaks down, in addition to doing all sorts of home repairs. When we work with and strengthen our children’s natural tendencies, we enable them to reach tremendous heights. Yaakov Aveinu blessed his sons and grandsons with the middos that were natural to them. May we too succeed in utilizing our strengths and encouraging those in our lives to use their unique qualities to fulfill their ultimate purpose.

Vibes of Greatness

Reb Yehoshua Aharon Tzvi Weinberger The Maharitz MiMargaretin (1815–1892) Shira Yael Klein Reb Yehoshua Aharon Tzvi Weinberger was a talmid of the Chasam Sofer, and the rav of the city of Margaretin (modern-day Marghita). He was known as the Maharitz MiMargaretin, with Maharitz being the acronym of his name, Moreinu HaRav Yehoshua Aharon Tzvi. The Maharitz MiMargaretin’s gabbai, Reb Menachem Mendel Kolker, told the following story to his family, which he saw with his own eyes. It was late at night. The Maharitz MiMargaretin and Reb Menachem Mendel were sitting and learning in the beis midrash. Suddenly, the door opened. A broken, terrified Jew collapsed on the threshold. It looked like he had barely managed to make it to the beis midrash. The two tzaddikim rushed to revive him. They rubbed his temples with whiskey and splashed water on his face. Finally, the man regained consciousness and began to haltingly tell his tale. “Rebbe! I live in the nearby village, where I run a tavern. The nature of the business is that most of my customers are not Jewish. From the little bit that I charge for each drink, I eke out a meager living for my family. “This evening, after closing time, an army officer came in and demanded that I open up my store for him, because he was thirsty and craved

alcohol. If he hadn’t been from the army, I would have refused him. But because he was a soldier, and their way is to cause harm, I just bit my lip and opened my collection wide. He started with one drink, then helped himself to another. He finished one bottle, and went on to the next. At some point the alcohol got the better of him, and he fell to the ground. “When I went to drag him outside the premises, I saw that he wasn’t just one more sleeping drunk. He was dead! “To my great luck, no one else was there at the time. I came up with an emergency plan: I hid the body in the cellar. This isn’t a permanent solution, of course. It barely bought me a bit of time to rush to you, Rebbe, so that you can help me. Please, give me your berachah, and advise me what to do. The Rebbe knows that if this officer’s absence is noticed, and someone says they think they saw him walking in the direction of the Jew’s tavern, they’ll certainly come and conduct a search, and then…” The Jew burst into tears. When he’d calmed down a bit, he continued, “Rebbe, what will happen if they find the corpse in my tavern’s cellar? They’ll cut off my head on the spot, and who knows what they’ll do to my family, how they’ll torture them. Who knows what will befall the Jewish community in my town, and

in the entire district. These goyim only need the slightest excuse to harm us. I’m terrified to think that all these horrors will erupt because of me!” The miserable Jew would have collapsed a second time if the Maharitz MiMargaretin hadn’t said to him soothingly, “Go back to the tavern. Run to the cellar, and go over to the cold, dead body. Whisper in the soldier’s ear that the rav of Margaretin ordered that he get up and go home because he has a few more minutes to live.” The Jew followed the Maharitz’s instructions with pure and simple faith. The dead soldier got up, and without making a sound, turned around and walked out of the Jew’s tavern. The next day, when the goyim came to the tavern, they sat around the tables with their cups of beer and whiskey, and talked about Officer So-and-So, who had returned home late the previous night and dropped dead the minute he opened his door. When the Jew heard this, he wiped tears from his eyes. He and his family had been saved. (Adapted from Nifla’os HaTzaddikim by Reb Yaron Amit)

Vibes of Greatness

Rav Chaim Kreiswirth

(1918 – December 30, 2011) Shira Yael Klein Reb Chaim Kreiswirth served as the longtime Chief Rabbi of Congregation Machzikei Hadass in Antwerp, Belgium. He was also the founder and rosh yeshivah of yeshivas Mercaz HaTorah in Yerushalayim. *** When Reb Chaim Kreiswirth was a young seventeen-year-old bachur, he learned in yeshivah in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. One day a talmid chacham named Reb Yeshaya’le came to Warsaw in order to undergo an eye operation. Warsaw was a big city, with better doctors and more advanced medical facilities than were available in the small towns.

no proof. But the commander didn’t waste time. “The punishment for a spy is to be shot to death immediately!” he barked. But even in the midst of such important “military operations,” the SS tyrant didn’t lose his German sense of order. “Get this spy out of here,” he ordered, “so that his dead body won’t be here on the floor, dirtying my office.’ A Nazi soldier grabbed Reb Chaim and led him to the forest to be shot. Reb Chaim knew that these were probably the last few minutes of his life. What should

Then the great tzaros came upon Klal Yisrael. The Nazis, yemach shemam, marched forward ruthlessly, conquering one country after another. Reb Chaim was summoned to the central office of the SS. He didn’t know if he would ever be zocheh to walk back out of the building, and, if so, under what circumstances. “You’re a spy! the commander said to him angrily. There was no judge, no jury, and 28

12/27/2023

Hashem listened to his tefillah. The soldier shot, but not at Reb Chaim. He shot in the air so that the sound would carry back to the commander — in his clean office. “Run away quickly!” the soldier said. “It doesn’t matter to where. Just get out of here. If you’re seen alive, you’ll be killed on the spot, and so will I!” And thus Reb Chaim Kreiswirth’s life was saved. This was one of the four times that Hashem saved his life during the Holocaust.

This Reb Yeshaya’le asked Reb Chaim for a place to sleep. There was only one bed in the room where Reb Chaim was staying. He didn’t have an extra bed for Reb Yeshaya’le, and he certainly didn’t have a couch. But, nonetheless, he did the mitzvah of hachnasas orchim eagerly. Reb Chaim gave Reb Yeshaya’le his bed, and he slept on the floor. He was mekayem the mishnah in Pirkei Avos that says, “Kach hi darkah shel Torah: pas b’melach tochal…v’al ha’aretz tishan… — This is the way of Torah: you shall eat bread with salt…and sleep on the ground…” Reb Yeshaya’le slept in Reb Chaim’s bed while he awaited his surgery. And slept in his bed while he recovered from his surgery. Reb Chaim slept on the floor for the entire summer.

When Reb Chaim heard this, he davened silently to Hashem, “Ribbono shel olam. If I have zechuyos because I let a talmid chacham sleep in my bed for the entire summer, please pay me now and save me.”

Reb Chaim eventually fled to Palestine with his wife, the daughter of the mashgiach of Slabodka, Reb Avraham Grodzinski. After the Holocaust, Reb Chaim returned to Poland in an attempt to rescue Jewish children who had been sheltered by the Catholic Church during the war. In 1947 he moved to the United States and served as the Rosh Yeshiva of Hebrew Theological College in Skokie, Illinois. Then, in 1953, he moved to Antwerp in an effort to rebuild the Jewish community there. Reb Chaim Kreiswirth became the longstanding av beis din and posek in Antwerp (the position that he is best known for), as well as an active member of the Agudath Israel. he do? He thought about speaking to the soldier a little bit, when suddenly the soldier turned to face him. “Do you think I’m a sadist?” he said. “I also have a wife and children at home.” Reb Chaim had never seen an SS soldier show any humanity. But maybe this one was a little different. Or maybe, right now, Hashem had put a drop of mercy in his hardened heart.

Chapter 17

The Guy Next Door Ruthie Pearlman

Chapter 17 RECAP: Nachman and Debbie go to the bowling alley Avi was last seen at to check the CCT V footage. The girl behind the counter refuses to help them. When they leave the bowling alley, a boy outside tells them he thinks he saw Avi go of f with someone.

“How do you know it was my son?” Debbie asked. I was so elated with the potential lead that I hadn’t thought to ask that question. If this kid said he saw our son going off with someone, then that’s what happened. But Debbie struck straight at the heart of the matter. We hadn’t come to Finchley Bowling with a photo of Avi, saying, “Have you seen this man?” All we had done was ask the girl behind the front desk if we could see the CCTV footage, and then Debbie had told her our son was missing and he’d been there with a group of friends.

32

I’d tell her or anything. Didn’t want her to get too bigheaded. But she was just…wow. Awesome. I thought I might tell her later, though. I was always going on about how we don’t praise the kids enough; quick to criticize, slow to praise, that was a big fault with us. And here I was planning on withholding praise from my own wife when, boy oh boy, did she deserve that praise. Those were the kinds of rambling thoughts going on inside my goofy man-brain, while Debbie hit straight to the jugular. “How do you know it was my son?”

The question Debbie now posed showed clarity, intelligence, and sharp senses. I, on the other hand, was just jumping up and down inside because some random kid said he’d seen our son going off with someone.

The boy looked momentarily nonplussed. “I don’t know for sure,” he admitted, “but…I can tell you what he looked like from what I remembered. And, also, I noticed things that didn’t seem right.”

Once again, I felt awe-inspired by my wife. Not that

tension. “Go on, describe him. And tell me what you noticed that didn’t seem right.” “He was dressed like a yeshivah boy. White shirt, black trousers. A lot of his friends were in T-shirts and jeans. He kind of stood out.” “Yes, Avi did go out wearing a white shirt and black trousers,” Debbie confirmed in a stressed voice. I felt a weird mixture of emotions at those words. Pride that my son was dressing like a yeshivah bachur even when he was out bowling with his friends, when no one else was. Anxiety that it had made him stand out. Made him a target. And shame that if it had been up to me, I wouldn’t have honestly been able to confirm what my own son was wearing because I just hadn’t noticed. The boy was fiddling with his Magen David necklace. “Um, well. The yeshivah boy, your son, I guess, was busy bowling with his friends when this big guy came into the alley.”

coming in and your son leaving with him.” He paused and fiddled with his necklace some more before adding, “I’m not sure I would have said or done anything either if it had been me and one of my friends. I’d have just thought, ‘Okay…’” He stopped. “It’s wrong of me, I know. I should have maybe questioned him… The guy, I mean.” “Why would you?” I asked. “Do they employ you as security here?” He obviously saw this question as a get-out and relaxed a little. “No, I’m only here to fix the mechanics in the alley, the machinery. You know. Stuff like that.” “What I would really, really appreciate,” Debbie said, “is if you could persuade Miss Jennie Jobsworth at the front desk to let us see the CCTV footage. We could maybe recognize who Avi went off with. Do you think you could do that?” Her voice lilted up at the end into a pleading tone. He looked doubtful. Debbie put on her best pathetic expression of a mother deprived of her beloved offspring.

My heart suddenly felt as if someone had dumped a bucket of ice directly onto it.

“Please!” she begged. (She didn’t actually say “I’ll be your best friend!” but it was implied in her tone of voice.)

“Big guy?” Debbie spoke the words before I did. “Yeah. Tall. Heavy build. Muscular. Like he weighttrained. Looked foreign. He, like, zoned in on the boy in the white shirt, like there was a string attached to him. He didn’t ask anyone who was who. He just went straight over to him and spoke to him. Your son was just between turns at that point, so he spoke to the guy. I watched his expression. He didn’t look happy. Then the big guy kind of pulled on your son’s arm, and they both went out together.” “Wait, what?” I said. “What about his friends? Didn’t they do or say anything?” The boy looked uncomfortable, as if whatever Avi’s friends had or hadn’t done was his fault instead of theirs. “They were kind of into their game,” he said at last. “I guess they must have thought it was legit, that guy

34

He sighed. “I’ll try my best,” he said finally. “I can’t promise, but…” Debbie sounded as excited as if he’d given her a castiron guarantee that he’d succeed. “Thank you so, so, so, so much!” “I didn’t say I would definitely do it,” the boy said. “I said I’d try. Jennie Jobsworth, as you call her, is quite a tough nut to crack.” “No kidding,” I said. We all sat there on the wall, saying nothing for a while. Then Debbie spoke up. “Erm, like, sometime this century would be nice, if that’s okay with you.” It came out quite rude, even though Debbie said it with a big, wide smile.

The boy gave her a look. “I’m on my break, you know,” he said, getting off the wall with a martyred sigh. “I really appreciate this,” Debbie said.

“I’ve also got only a sister,” he said. “I thought you frummers had large families.”

We sat on the wall, waiting for the boy.

“It doesn’t always happen to everyone,” Debbie said.

“We should have asked his name,” I said finally. “Makes it kind of impersonal, asking him to do us favors and we don’t even know his name.”

“Yeah, guess it doesn’t,” Jamie said.

“You’re right,” Debbie said. “Now, if he comes back with good news, he’s going to think we’re asking his name only because he succeeded. And if he comes back with bad news, he’s going to think we’re going to report him. Oh dear, you’re right for once, it wasn’t a great move.” For once. Nice. “Makes it more personal if we know his name,” I said again, stupidly, “like we care about him. He might try harder for us if we address him by his name.” “He’s coming back,” Debbie said. The boy sat down beside us again and put his two hands between his knees. He looked over at me and Debbie. I didn’t like his expression.

“So that’s that, then?” Debbie asked. “Dead end? Nothing more to be done?” She looked like she was about to start crying, and my heart broke. “I’ve got an idea,” Jamie said. “It could cost me my job if I get caught, though.” We waited. “I know where there’s a key,” he said, “to this place. I work here, after all, and everyone has to know about the key in case of emergencies. It was made very clear to us that it’s only for emergency use. If you could come back later tonight, when we’re closed, I could meet you here… I’ll get the key just before it closes, so that no one is going to miss it. I’ll let you in, and together we’ll look at the CCTV.” “Wow, that’s a huge risk you’d be taking,” I said.

“Jennie Jobsworth said no?” Debbie asked him before he could say anything.

Debbie looked scandalized at my words. She wanted him to take this risk. She needed him to do it. And so did I, so I felt foolish for my words.

He nodded. “She knew it was for you, and she wasn’t going to budge,” he said. “I’m sorry. I did try.”

“You know how to work the CCTV?” she asked eagerly. “How to get to it?”

“You did indeed,” Debbie said. I was too shocked and upset to even speak, so I let her do all the talking. “I’m sorry, I should have asked you this before, because you’ve been so helpful and nice to us…but what’s your name?”

He looked at her as if she’d asked him if he knew how to switch on his mobile phone. “Of course,” he said. “I’m a teenager. We know these things.”

He smiled. “Jamie,” he replied. “Jamie Solomon. From Finchley. Nice and local for me to come work at Finchley Bowling. I live just up the street, in fact. I didn’t ask you your names either, so I guess we’re even Stephen.” We introduced ourselves. “I’m Nachman Feld, and this is my wife Debbie. The boy we’re talking about is called Avi. We only have two kids, a boy and a girl.” I had no idea why I felt it necessary to add that. Maybe it made me feel more pathetic and deserving of help than if I had a dozen, even though I knew this was ridiculous and that every child was equally precious. But Jamie didn’t seem impressed or sympathetic at the

36

news of our small family.

12/27/2023

“Silly me,” Debbie said. “Sounds like a plan,” I said. “What time does this place close?” “Midnight. You be here five past. Don’t be too obvious. Park somewhere inconspicuous. Which is your car? I’ll look out for it.” I pointed it out. He looked at it somewhat disdainfully. “Well, okay, I suppose it’s good in that at least it doesn’t stand out,” he said grudgingly. “Everything has a good side,” I said. “Even my rubbish car.” To be continued…

STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS Rifka Schoenfeld

WHY IS M Y CHILD HAVIN G TRO U B L E IN SC H O O L? One of the fundamental differences between childhood and adulthood is this: as adults we can choose a field of endeavor that highlights our strengths and caters to our interests. We can reject career or job prospects that will expose our shortcomings. Children are not given choices and thus cannot shield themselves from failure; we expect them to be competent, if not expert, in a whole array of school basics. Our children must be good writers, astute mathematicians, and must perform well in language arts. We expect them to be good at problem solving, memorization, critical thinking and organization. In addition, they must follow instructions well, process data accurately, take good notes, produce exemplary work in both Hebrew and English studies—and do it all fast! Is it any wonder that so many children do not measure up to the heavy burden expectations placed on their young shoulders? Consider the case of *Yael, an eleven year-old girl who is finding school increasingly difficult. She seems to easily lose the thread of class discussions, and is often confused when new material is explained in class. Instead of repeatedly asking for help, she tunes out and makes little effort at even trying to understand. Yael reads well but very slowly. She requires instructions to be repeated in order to carry them out. She would rather take home school work

42

to do at home where her mother explains and reviews the lessons. “My mother knows how to explain it slowly so that I understand,” she says.

A G E

Although children experience failure in any one of the broad array of subjects, a most frequent—if often undiagnosed—source of trouble that affects performance in almost every single academic area is the one Yael manifests: slow data-processing. Achievement in school depends greatly upon being able to keep pace with the rapid presentation of information. During elementary grades, new facts and procedures are usually presented slowly and with lots of repetition. Gradually, the pace accelerates. The quick processing of entirely new material is demanded with greater frequency during a child’s school years than during the career years of an adult! Speed is vital for scholastic success. Students must be able to respond swiftly to rapid-fire quiz questions. They must think quickly on their feet during class discussions. They are pressured to grasp numbers, charts, pictures and other forms of nonverbal material with speed, as well. There are many children who, like Yael, have difficulty processing material fast enough while they listen, read, or observe. Students like her may find themselves trying to digest the teacher’s first statement, while the teacher has gone on to a second or third idea which they have missed or heard only partially. With a fragmented understanding of the subject

The Junior Diplomats

Chapter 17

Abba’s brow remained furrowed for a long time as he continued to peer at his computer screen in concern. In short order, Eli and Rachel got bored of watching their father in his nondescript-looking office. He clearly wasn’t going to share the reason for his anxiety with them, and it didn’t seem like he was about to talk on the phone and explain what was going on to anyone either. “Let’s explore,” Eli told Rachel. Rachel’s lips curved upward. “Let’s explore” was the siblings’ code term for investigating suspicious activity at the embassy. Only, back in Holland, the most suspicious thing they’d ever encountered had been a raccoon (or wasbeertje, as it was called there) digging a hole into the underside of the building. Somehow, Eli sensed that something far more sinister was awaiting discovery at the Viennese embassy. The siblings quietly headed to the door of the office. Abba peered at them as they pulled the door open, but he said nothing. His mind was clearly still on the information on his computer screen. Security.

Recap: Rachel and Eli join their father at his work in the Israeli embassy. They wonder if there’s some sort of threat hanging over the embassy.

The word glinted at the Katzes from a hallway sign. “Abba’s working for security here,” Rachel whispered. “But back in Holland he was just a regular diplomat.” Eli stared at Rachel, slowly processing her words.

Chapter 17

His sister was right. Back in Holland, Abba’s job had included typical diplomat-type jobs, like processing passports, visas, and birth certificates for citizens abroad. Here, however, he seemed to be working in a different department. “The citizens’ services section is over there,” Rachel said, pointing at a dimly-lit room at the end of the long hallway they were still walking through. “But Abba’s in the security section. Why?” The siblings reached the end of the hallway and entered the room that Rachel had pointed at. Eli resisted the urge to flick the light on and flood the room with more light. It was Sunday, after all, and the embassy had less staff working than usual — which was why the citizens’ services section was so dark. But the security section had been teeming with workers. As if they were under threat and major security was necessary. “Maybe we should go back to the security section,” Eli whispered. “We might find some answers there.” “Or not.” Rachel lifted her sequined pocketbook to her chest. “I think I have more answers in here than we’ll be able to find back there.” Eli stared at his sister, remembering the pocketbook that the security guards had passed off as safe enough to bring into the embassy. What could Rachel possibly have in there? “Huh?” he said. “There are benches outside the embassy,” Rachel added, her tone turning delightedly enigmatic. “Let’s go sit on one of them.” Feeling very much like a little boy whose older sister was babysitting him for the day — when things should have been, and were, the other way around — Eli obediently followed his sister through

the security checkpoint that they’d been through only forty-five minutes earlier. “Had enough already?” one of the guards there asked, his tone considerably warmer than it had been when they’d come in and been checked. Rachel nodded. “We’re going to be back soon,” Eli said reassuringly. “We just want a bit of fresh air.” The siblings left the embassy building for the open sky beyond. A winding path led from the embassy to the parking lot and main road, with several Israeli security officers milling about. They were still officially on Israeli territory. Embassy territory. “What do you want to show me?” Eli asked. His voice rose with an impatience he wasn’t even aware he’d been feeling. “Spill it out already, Rachel. This is starting to feel like a silly game.” Rachel didn’t respond, clearly enjoying her older brother’s expression of annoyance. Eli sighed. Rachel could be a drama queen when she wanted, and he could only hope that something would truly come out of her cloak-and-dagger behavior. “There’s a bench there.” Rachel pointed. “Let’s sit on it, and I’ll show you my special Vienna notebook.” The bench was high backed and metal, slightly uncomfortable as the siblings leaned against it. Rachel opened the hook on her sequined pocketbook, removing a small sequined notebook from it. Eli rolled his eyes. Sequins and more sequins. Why did Rachel think she had answers to anything?

Chapter 17

“My Notebook of Suspicions,” the front cover declared. Rachel handed over the sequined book to Eli. “You can see that this is a special notebook from the very first page.” Eli held back a snort. The first page of his sister’s notebook was a hodgepodge of drawings of magnifying glasses, suspicious-looking figures, and scary-looking eyes all designed in gel pens.

Abba leaves early for work every morning and comes home late at night. He’s always worked a lot, but this is really a lot. Sometimes, I feel like the only time I get to see him is on Shabbos — and that was yesterday. I’m starting to miss Holland. At least there I got to see Abba. September 1

One figure, in particular, stared up at him with eerie familiarity. Rachel had always had a penchant for drawing people’s faces well, and this was the face of the man whom Eli had spotted following him on more than one occasion.

School started today, and I’m nervous. I heard Abba tell Ima yesterday that the fact that people are following him is nothing to worry about and shouldn’t involve her or the kids at all. “It’s all lowlevel security,” he told her. “But it’s important that we follow every lead, because you can never tell.”

With a sense of heightened curiosity, and a touch of fear, Eli leaned forward and began to read.

What does that mean?!! There are people following us??? That’s terrifying!

Rachel had written in diary form, starting from the middle of the summer, on the day their parents had announced their relocation to Vienna.

The diary continued with at least another two entries, but Eli needed to take a break. “I didn’t realize that you knew anything,” he whispered.

August 13

“I would have discussed things with you if I had realized.”

I’m suspicious. I’m going to make a list of my suspicions, and maybe I’ll figure something out. 1. We were supposed to go back to Israel this summer, but instead we’re moving to Vienna. 2. Abba said his transfer to Vienna was approved. Approved by who? The Israelis? Maybe. Or maybe not. Maybe he’s running away from the Israelis. But how can he work for the embassy in Vienna if he’s a spy? He must be doing something good.

Rachel shrugged. “Continue reading,” she said. “You’ll see that I figured some things out on my own. And then there’s a list of questions that I still need to work through.” Eli turned back to the notebook again. In the distance he could see two security guards drawing closer. They looked like the type of nonchalant security guards he was used to from Holland — but these seemed to have an aura of solemnness and fear about them. With a sigh, Eli turned back to his sister’s notebook and continued reading.

The question is, what? August 24 I’m going to continue listing my suspicions:

Ring tailed Lemur

ַ ‫טעילד‬-‫רינג‬ ‫מאלּפע‬

The ring tailed lemur - a family which includes a variety of approximately 30 monkeys - is found only in the small remote country of Madagascar, an island near the continent of Africa. They are named Ring Tailed Lemur for the black & white rings that decorate their beautiful furry tails which can extend to 25 inches long! The tails have 12-13 white rings and 13-14 black ones, with black always edging the tip. They use their long tails to keep their balance and communicate with each other.

Surprisingly, some of these strange laws are still technically in effect today. Here are a few examples of some of the quirkiest laws, along with a glimpse into why they exist and how they came about.

Other Sunday no-no’s include eating hamburgers in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and pickle eating in New Jersey. Hmmm, it’s a good thing Heshy Himmelstein lived in New York…

No Fun in Alabama A lot of activities we consider fun are against the law down south in the state of Alabama. Which begs the question: What did Alabama legislators have against fun back when these laws were formulated? For example, in Mobile, Alabama, it’s illegal to spray Silly String. It’s illegal to wear a fake mustache in a church because it can cause laughter. Playing dominoes is illegal on Sundays because one hundred years ago, dominoes were considered a form of gambling. Presumably, 74

There are lots of doozy

Some wild and wacky car-related laws include the following: In Alabama, it’s illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while operating a vehicle. It is legal, on the other hand, to drive down a oneway street in the wrong direction if you have a lantern attached to your vehicle. This brings us to an interesting (read: bizarre) Illinois state law that clearly states that all cars in Illinois must be driven with a steering wheel included (doesn’t say anything about tires, though…). And keep in mind when cross-country traveling that in the state of Tennessee you’re not allowed to drive while sleeping. I’m sure glad that’s a law because otherwise I don’t think anybody would realize what a bad idea it is! Sometimes, current laws and regulations may be in direct contradiction to older laws. For example, these days, driving the wrong way on a 76

laws regarding animals across the country. Like, for example, did you know that in Berkeley, California, it’s illegal to whistle for a lost canary before 7:00 a.m.? In the state of Alaska, you can’t wake a bear to take a picture with it. (Can I wake him up so he can take a picture of me and my friend?) In California, a frog that has participated in a frog-jumping competition cannot legally be killed or eaten. You may not hunt moths under streetlamps in Los Angeles, and you have to have an official hunting license to use a mousetrap in California. Also,

it’s

Capital of the World. So I guess it makes sense

People like to say it’s illegal to fish from a camel’s back in Idaho, which is technically true, but the actual law prohibits fishing from the back of any animal. This law was originally meant to dissuade horseback riders from fishing off the backs of their horses (What’s wrong with fishing while on horseback? No idea), but the law was written to

that they would have a law about eating chicken. But get this — the law states that chicken must be eaten with the hands instead of a fork and knife. Truthfully, this law was originally intended to be a prank, but at one point the local police department jokingly turned it into an actual law, and that’s how it stands today.

include all animals. For concerned animal rights activists, the latest cross-country update to do with what you will: In South Bend, Indiana, though monkeys aren’t allowed to smoke cigarettes, at least all birds are granted the right of way on highways in Utah. And though they’re strict about ensuring no ugly or funny faces are made at dogs in the state of Oklahoma, dogs are still not allowed to get an education in Hartford, Connecticut. Moving right along to some very important personal hygiene laws. Kentucky law states that people must bathe at least once per year. (Remind me never to visit Kentucky!) Gargling in

It all started when my family went on a trip two summers ago. We had a great time! On the way home my parents decided to stop off at a restaurant for supper. We were on the way when we remembered we hadn’t davened mincha yet. We turned around and went to the nearest shul and davened mincha. When we were finished we realized to our great disappointment that the restaurant had already closed for the night. We drove home and had an ordinary supper instead. A short while later, my father came home with horrifying news! The restaurant in which we had planned on going to that day in the summer, was selling treif! Someone had been caught sneaking non-kosher chicken into the restaurant!! Mincha had saved us from eating treif!!!!!

Congratulations to our winner!

My aunt made a Chanukah party and she had people come to her house and bring games, such as blocks that you have to knock down etc. My aunt bouhgt prizes for whoever gets it down. Also at the party we did a present excahnge with all the cousins. After playing the game, I was deciding between two prizes that I liked very much. In the end, I chose on prize and moved on. When it came time for the present exchange my cousin gave me the same prize I did not choose by the game. I could not belleve it. I felt like this was true Hashgacha Pratis!

It was a regular Thursday morning, except for the fact that it was Thanksgiving, so there were less cars on the road. I was about to go outside and then I heard Bang! Boom! Smash! Crash! I opened the door and I saw a school bus in my driveway with smoke and pieces flying everywhere. A bus drove down my block and it plowed through 6 cars, and it flattened a mailbox, knocked down a streetlight, and dented an electric box. If it would’ve happened a minute later then I would’ve been in my driveway, and I probably could’ve gotten hurt. And also my father, my mother, my brother, and a couple of my neighbors. And if I would’ve gotten injured, I would not have the zechus to share with you this incredible miracle.

Many years ago, my father was a cook in a camp. All my siblings went as staff kids and had tons of fun because of the fact that my father worked there then that led to my sisters continuing to spend her summer years in that camp. A few years later, my sister had a counselor , and always thought was a good idea for my cousin as his bashert. no one really took interest in what she said when she was in camp that her counselor is a good idea for my cousin. But when the time came that my cousin was shidduchim then she went out and got engaged.this is all because of the years before that my father worked in this camp as a cook.
