he formidable day of Asarah B’Teves is on a Friday this year.
They were unable to communicate with those on the outside…
Asarah B’Teves is unique among the fasts for Yerushalayim and the Churban in that it marks the beginning of the process that led to the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. The siege that our enemies laid to the walls of Yerushalayim on this day lasted for two and a half years, culminating in the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash on Tishah B’Av.
The Jews could have counteracted all of that with achdus.
The fact that Asarah B’Teves marks the beginning of the process is significant. Halachically, our sources tell us that were Asarah B’Teves to fall out on a Shabbos, we would be required to fast. Hillel’s calendar has made this type of calendrical eventuality an impossibility. However, this is the only public fast day for Yerushalayim that can fall out on an erev Shabbos — and when it falls out on that day, like this year, we fast. Why the halachic stringency for Asarah B’Teves? A stringency that is even more than Tishah B’Av to some extent — as Tishah B’Av cannot fall out on Friday, nor do we fast on Shabbos if it falls out then, and instead we push off the fast until Sunday. The answer to this question is that Asarah B’Teves is the beginning of the process. And the beginning of any process holds immense potential — for good, or the opposite.

The potential was there for them to use their tightly crowded confines to get rid of the factions that divided them and to establish a united front so as to combat the enemy. Unfortunately, the Jews in Yerushalayim of old chosen not to do this. Instead, within the confines of the besieged city, they drifted further and further apart. And fought. Calamity and tragedy doesn’t automatically result in the desired outcome. To achieve that outcome takes work. And the potential for that work was there. It’s there in modern-day Yerushalayim as well. It’s there in Yerushalayim’s outlying cities, and in Jewish communities around the globe. Ultimately, tapping into that potential for achdus and uniting will lead to the fulfillment of Zecharyah’s nevuah, which states, “The fast of the fourth [month], the fast of the fifth [month], the fast of the seventh [month], and the fast of the tenth [month] shall be for the house of Yehudah for joy and happiness…” (Zecharyah 8:19).
Asarah B’Teves was the day that Nevuchadnetzar laid siege to Yerushalayim. Had they chosen to do so, the Jews could have combatted the spiritual and physical impact of the siege.
The fast of the tenth month refers to the fast day of Asarah B’Teves.
They were forced into a confined area, with no option to leave… They had no way to receive supplies from outside of the city…

VAYIGASH Vayeishev Weeding Out Inconsistent Behaviors In this week’s parashah, when Yosef reveals himself to his brothers, the pasuk (Bereishis 45:3) says, “And Yosef said to his brothers, ‘I am Yosef. Is my father still alive?’ But his brothers couldn’t answer him because they were confused before him.” Rashi explains that they were embarrassed because of what they had done to him. The midrash in Bereishis Rabbah 93:10 comments on this, “Woe to us on the Day of Judgement. Woe to us on the Day of Rebuke.” Yosef’s brothers couldn’t face him when they were rebuked. How will we be able to face Hashem on the day of judgment? The Beis HaLevi asks, What, exactly, was the rebuke in Yosef’s words? Previously, Yosef had asked his brothers about Yaakov (Bereishis 43:27), “Is your aged father at peace? Is he still alive?” The midrashim there don’t consider that question to be a rebuke. So what was different about the question in 45:3, “I am Yosef. Is my father still alive?” that made it a rebuke? The Beis HaLevi explains that when Yosef asked, “Is my father still alive?” he wasn’t inquiring about Yaakov’s welfare. Rather, it was a statement of amazement. Yosef wondered out loud how Yaakov could still be alive after twenty-two years of enduring the pain of not knowing where Yosef was. Yosef wasn’t asking a question but rather rebuking his brothers: If you were truly concerned about our father’s welfare and that’s why you think I should release Binyamin, why weren’t you concerned about him and the pain he carried for

the past twenty-two years? You have contradicted yourself with your actions. This is the rebuke that the midrash is referring to. Just as Yosef rebuked his brothers, so too Hashem will look at all our actions to check if they contradict each other. When we sin, we often excuse ourselves. However, we must be fearful of the judgement that will expose the contradictions in our behavior. The pasuk in Mishlei 17:15 says, “Justifying a wicked person or condemning a tzaddik, both are despicable before Hashem.” The Beis HaLevi wonders, If the word “both” is used to add something extra, what is being added here? And he explains: Some people always see the positive, even in wicked people. Others are the opposite — they look badly at others, even tzaddikim or respectable people. Both are problematic behaviors but can be tolerated. However, if someone combines both finding good in wicked people and condemning the righteous, that is a contradiction that Hashem despises. In the Tanna D’vei Eliyahu Zuta chapter 14, attributed to Eliyahu HaNavi, Eliyahu tells the following story. “Once, when I was traveling, I met a man who hadn’t learned Torah or Mishnah and was joking about it. I asked him, ‘My son, what will you answer to Hashem on the day of judgement?’ The man replied, ‘I have an excuse. I will explain that I wasn’t granted knowledge and understanding.’ I then asked him, ‘What is your profession?’ He

answered, ‘I am a hunter.’ I then questioned this paradox, ‘To bring linen, create nets, and throw them out to sea you have knowledge? But for the words of the Torah, about which it says, “They are very close to you,” you don’t have knowledge?’ Right away, the man began to cry. I told him, ‘Don’t feel bad. This is a very common answer. People claim one thing, but their actions reveal a different reality.’ ” How often do we display inconsistent, contradictory behavior? The story is told about a bachur learning under Rav Avraham Yehoshua who struggled daily to wake up on time for shacharis. Most often, he arrived well into davening. Before Pesach bein hazemanim, the bachurim would go to the rosh yeshivah to say goodbye and ask for a parting berachah. When this bachur went to receive his berachah, Rav Avraham Yehoshua blessed him that he should miss his plane. The bachur was astounded. The rav explained, “If you make it to the airport in time to board the earlymorning flight, there will be a severe claim against you in Heaven. How is it that you can make your flight on time but can’t get up for shacharis?” And, in fact, the bachur missed his flight! There is a famous story told about a man who bought a lottery ticket and claimed he trusted in Hashem that he would win the one-thousand-ruble jackpot. That was only until Rav Yisrael Salanter offered him nine hundred rubles in exchange for the ticket. When he agreed to this offer, Rav Salanter questioned him, “If you truly trusted that this ticket would win, why are you willing to lose one hundred rubles?” On the positive side, when one runs their life according to their values and without contradiction, it commands awe and respect. One of my close friends revealed to me a behavior that illustrates this beautifully. On Purim, we often spend money without restraint on creating and sharing elaborate mishloach manos and a seudah. But at the same time, we often fulfill the mitzvah of matanos l’evyonim with the minimum requirement. My friend and her husband made a calculation how much money they spent on all the food, paper goods, containers, etc., that they bought for Purim and then gave the exact same amount of money for matanos l’evyonim. They didn’t want to be inconsistent in their actions.

I heard the following story told over by Rav Gedalaya Schorr’s son, Avrohom, who heard it from the protagonist himself. A man had a serious tumor that required a surgery at the cost of $80,000, which he could not afford. He decided to strengthen his bitachon and trust that everything would be okay. But then he questioned his behavior. He thought he might be doing this because of his laziness to raise the money. He decided to travel abroad to collect money, and he successfully raised the entire sum. At this point, he said to himself, “Now that I know I’m not being lazy. I can have bitachon.” He then proceeded to give away all the money he had raised to tzedakah. Shortly afterward, he returned to the doctor, who reexamined him and sent him for more testing. The doctor reported in shocking surprise that there was no longer any growth. Rav Avigdor Miller speaks about the importance of keeping routine. Perhaps this can be a solution for the inconsistency of our actions. No matter how upset one may be with their close family, Rav Miller exhorts us to keep up the routine. Even if you aren’t in the mood of cooking supper or doing the laundry for someone who annoys you, do it anyway. Even if you often find yourself distracted during davening, keep the routine. Sometimes you may daven with more kavanah, and sometimes with less. Rebbetzin Yitty Neustadt, z”l, used to say that even if your tefillos feel like a bunch of zeros, one day you will have a good tefillah. That good tefillah is the number one placed in front of all those tefillos that rated as zero. This creates a large number and brings all of them up to Hashem. We can pick one tefillah, one chesed, one good action, and do it consistently to create powerful avodas Hashem. Yosef rebuked his brothers for their contradictory behavior. The midrash is warning us to be wary of our actions and to weed out inconsistency and contradiction. In this way, we will be protected on the ultimate day of judgment.

Rav Moshe Shapiro
(May 28, 1935–January 7, 2017) Shira Yael Klein Israeli-born Rav Moshe Shapiro was a less-known Litvish rosh yeshivah and maggid shiur. He was a tremendous talmid chacham and masmid who knew all of Shas. He was perfectly capable of giving classic Litvish Brisk-style Gemara shiurim. He did so mostly for bachurim, likely due to Rav Shach’s insistence that he not pull bachurim away from standard learning. However, he is known for being one of the foremost contemporary baalei machshavah. Although he tended not to quote his sources, his students testify that he was clearly familiar with sifrei kabbalah as well as sifrei chassidus such as the Tanya, Sefas Emes, and even Likkutei Moharan. (L’havdil, he was an “information vacuum” who also absorbed all of the works of Kant, the works of other classic philosophers, and many other subjects and sciences.) He gave many machshavah shiurim on different levels, which were often closed to the public. He taught both the elite of the yeshivah world as well as baalei teshuvah in Israel (including in yeshivas Ohr Somayach) and in Moscow.

Every citizen was equipped with a bulky gas mask. In the final few days before the Gulf war broke out, a group of bachurim together with one of their roshei yeshivah approached Reb Moshe Shapiro after his shiur. “How should we prepare for the upcoming war?” they asked.
In Israel, the fear was palpable. Everyone worried and wondered what the future would bring. People were preparing frantically. They made sealed rooms in their houses by taping plastic tablecloths over the windows and sealing the cracks under the 28

Rav Moshe didn’t say that there wouldn’t be any missiles. But he seemed to totally mock the pervasive fear of chemical warfare — which was the main threat and the one that everyone was talking about. At the time, no one imagined that thirtynine Scud missiles would land in Israel — thirty-nine standard missiles with familiar explosive warheads. In the end, Reb Moshe was proven right. There was, baruch Hashem, no chemical warfare. All of the plastic sheeting and bleach and masks turned out to be one big Purim shpiel. In a clear neis, only one person was killed from the Scuds. However, there were something like thirteen cases of strangulation from not wearing the gas masks properly, and dozens of people who suffered heart attacks as they cowered in their sealed rooms. But there was a lot of secondary damage caused by the shock waves of the Scuds.
*** In 1990, the Gulf war broke out between Saddam Hussein in Iraq and a forty-twocountry coalition led by the United States. Iraq openly threatened that if they were to be invaded, they would attack Israel. Iraq hoped to provoke an Israeli military response, which would then encourage Arab states to withdraw from the coalition (so as not to be allied with Israel).
His advice seemed totally delusional. At the time, all of the political analysts predicted either chemical warfare or no war at all.
Indeed, it turned out that Reb Moshe was right. The only thing that needed to be done was to back away from the windows. There was no need to do more. “Nu, nu,” Reb Moshe replied. “There will be a few explosions. Please don’t disfigure yourselves with those grubbe maseichos (coarse masks). There’s no need to turn the house upside down. But there is one thing that you should please be careful about. Stay away from the windows, because the shock waves are dangerous.” That’s all Reb Moshe had to say about the impending war that was striking fear in everyone’s heart.

STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS Rifka Schoenfeld
“A” IS FO R A N XI ETY Managing School-Related Sadness & Anxiety in Children “*Miri gets so worried about her tests at school that she develops severe headaches. Nothing I say seems to relax her tension. What should I do?” “*Reuvain complains of stomach aches all during the week, but on the weekends he feels fine. Then, on Sunday night, they come back again. Just when I think he’s trying to avoid going to school, he actually throws up. What’s going on?” “*Tzippy’s teacher called to ask if there’s a problem at home that’s making her so sad and withdrawn. At home, she seems fine to us. I have no clue what is troubling her.” Many students adapt very well to school; they feel good about themselves and their school work. For others, however, school is threatening. Getting through an average school day for some children is fraught with anxiety-producing situations and painful moments. Like Miri, Reuvain and Tzippy, these children may develop physical or emotional symptoms that seriously hamper their performance and social integration. Long-standing unhappiness in school can be part of a vicious cycle. A child having trouble in one or more aspects of school life may become saddened and anxious. These feelings make it hard to concentrate which, in turn, generates further failure—and consequently, more anxiety. Such cycles can be hard to break. Mastering them depends, in part, on a good understanding of the sources of a child’s feelings of sadness. The following, say childhood experts, are the most common patterns.
General anxiety Some youngsters feel anxious most of the time for no apparent reason. Their anxiety has no specific boundaries. It may be part of their temperament, or it may be part of a pattern of behavior that is shared with other members of the family—almost a family trait. (“We’re all worriers. We’re all high-strung.”) If the anxiety becomes very severe, it may evolve into depression, interfering with the child’s ability to go to school, to concentrate and learn, and to socialize with others.
Anticipatory Anxiety Children with this type of anxiety have an exaggerated fear of the future. They are very aware of how things may go wrong and tend to fear the worst. They perpetually ask questions regarding the future, especially “What will happen if-?” type of queries that reflect their anxiety. Very young children continually ask the teacher “When are
we going home?” “When are we going to lunch?” “When are we coming in?” Such students may gradually lose their anxiety as they become more confident, or may evolve into chronic worriers, fearing the possibility of illness, death or some other tragedy.
School Phobia Anxiety in children can lead to school avoidance. These youngsters may outright refuse to attend school or create reasons why they should not go, complaining of not feeling well, with vague, unexplainable symptoms. Many of these children have anxiety-related symptoms over which they have no conscious control. Perhaps they have headaches, stomachaches, hyperventilation, nausea or dizziness. School refusal symptoms occur most often on school days, and are usually absent on weekends. When these children are examined by a doctor, no true illnesses are detected or diagnosed. The child’s fear may represent a form of separation anxiety from parents or an irrational concern that something bad might happen while the child is away. This is especially true if there has been a death, divorce or other serious loss suffered in the home. Fear of bullying, or problems with friendships, are also common. Trouble with school work or with teachers may also play a part. Anxieties over using a public bathroom are not uncommon. In most cases, the child is unable to pinpoint the precise reason for their anxiety, or lacks the language to put that fear into words. Milder forms of school phobia are encountered in children who do attend school but who show bodily preoccupations, such as headaches and recurring abdominal pains. They make frequent trips to the nurse’s office or are absent excessively due to minor medical complaints.
Obsessive -Compulsive Behavior Obsessive-compulsive patters are often associated with anxiety. Affected children practice various repetitive or ritualistic behaviors such as excessive hand-washing and endlessly writing and erasing to make something perfect. Often these youngsters feel bound to perform certain actions in a specific order and experience extreme anxiety when that order is changed. They may become distressed with any departure from routine. Such children may work extremely slowly in order to ensure that the work is flawless. If his or her understanding of all new material is not
perfect and complete, the child may be suffused with anxiety.
What are the signs? •Feeling fearful or panicky •Feeling breathless, sweaty, or complaining of `butterflies’ or pains in the chest or stomach •Feeling tense, fidgety, using the bathroom often. These symptoms may come and go. Young children can’t tell you that they are anxious. They become irritable, tearful and clingy, have difficulty sleeping, and can wake in the night or have bad dreams.
Managing School-Related Anxiety At Home Excessively anxious children need sensitive care and understanding. Parents should make every effort to create a safe and confidential atmosphere in which children can discuss their anxieties. Don’t trivialize a child’s fears or concerns Be emotionally supportive. Comments that dismiss the child’s fears such as “That’s nothing to worry about,” “Just ignore it,” or “That’s silly,” are not helpful and simply communicate to the child that parents don’t understand. 1) Do everything possible to identify the sources of the child’s anxiety. If a problem like a school bully or an unreasonable teacher is the cause of your child’s anxiety, become an advocate for him or her and discuss these problems with the school staff. The teacher or principal may need to make some adjustments to relieve the pressure on your child in the classroom or on the playground. 2) Children with extreme anticipatory anxiety often benefit from keeping a diary in which they record each night their current worries. At certain intervals, with the help of an adult, they should review the concerns they harbored. Realizing that most of the time, these worries did not materialize can help alleviate patterns of anxiety. 3) If your child stays home, be sure she is safe and comfortable, but she should not receive any special treatment. Her symptoms should be treated with consideration and understanding. However, her day should not be a holiday. There should be no special snacks and no visitors. 4) It is important to make a commitment to be extra firm on school mornings, when children complain most about their symptoms. Keep discussions about physical symptoms or anxieties to a minimum. For example, do not ask your youngster how he feels. If he is well enough to be up and around the house, then he is well enough to attend school.
Managing School-Related Sadness In School 1) Many anxious children improve dramatically when they feel school is a safe place. Teachers need to make classes as emotionally safe as possible. One way to do this is to avoid causing the anxious child public embarrassment, such as calling her up to the front of the class to recite or perform when she is unwilling. Punishment that entails being made to sit out in the hallway to be viewed by all who pass by is never appropriate for such a child.
2) When dealing with an anxious child, a teacher should look of roles or activities in which the student feels competent and needed. Specific responsibilities, even errands, can give anxious students a feeling of self-worth. 3) Communication with the parents about their child’s anxieties is imperative. If the source of the anxiety is connected to schoolwork or testing, the sensitive teacher knows how to alleviate exaggerated worrying by reassuring the child that effort –not grades—is what counts. 4) If the child’s anxiety is connected to trouble with a fellow student or students, the teacher should make every effort to defuse the situation by calling the students aside and speaking to them individually or jointly— whatever is more appropriate. 5) If the anxiety is anticipatory—that is, the child is deeply preoccupied with possible dangers or problems and tragedies looming ahead in the immediate future, drawing the child out about these fears and offering sincere reassurance usually helps to minimize them. Relief often comes from asking the child “What’s the worst thing that can happen to you if the thing you are worried about (the bus breaks down/ you get lost/ no one’s home when you arrive/) actually takes place?” Together with the teacher, the child can then explore solutions and alternatives that drastically lower the anxiety threshold. In extreme cases, children who are chronically anxious or who exhibit the signs of depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder, should be evaluated by a competent child psychiatrist or psychologist. In severe cases, anti-anxiety medication may be indicated. It is unkind to expect a child to simply endure living with extreme anxiety. Remember, most adults would take pro-active measures to avoid experiencing this oppressive state of mind. We should not expect children to endure experiences that few adults would tolerate.
Do Children Grow Out Of It? The good news, advises childhood expert Dr. Mel Levine in Educational Care , is that most children do outgrow anxiety. Those who do not, however, may suffer side effects that can have long-lasting ramifications. Not going to school, for example, means missing out on education and on making friends. Loneliness and lack of confidence can be long-term problems. Often children are anxious in large measure because their parents are anxious. Children absorb the tension and fear from the atmosphere in the home. In this is the case, the child is unlikely to outgrow the condition until the parents learn to deal positively with their anxieties and problems. Often, observing their child’s anxiety serves as the strongest impetus for parents to work out their own issues. With the parents’ growth and change almost always comes dramatic improvement in the anxious child. *Names have been changed to protect privacy.

That Abba was siding with the enemy made no sense. Especially if that enemy was Nazis or neo-Nazis. Still, there was no denying that Abba had been unconcerned, and even blithe, about the listening devices they’d found planted around their house. And that he’d tried to pass off their Thursday-morning intruder as a cleaning man. What was going on? On Sunday morning, Eli thought he might have found a way to resolve some of his questions. Abba was going to the embassy again, and if he played his cards right, he ought to be able to accompany him, and perhaps pick up some answers. The first step was to prepare some freshly squeezed orange juice for his father and himself… “Wow, what a treat,” Abba said some ten minutes later as he came into the kitchen for his customary cup of coffee. “Fresh orange juice is so much healthier than coffee, and it’s been a really long time since you made many.”
Recap: Jake and Eli go to the Zilberbergs’ for a Shabbos meal, and Jake enjoys himself immensely. On the way home, Jake is overwhelmed by a sense of foreboding. He and Eli find a threatening note with a swastika on it under the Katzes’ front door.
The last time had been before their move to Vienna, back in Holland, but Eli still had fond memories of standing and squeezing oranges and then drinking the homemade juice together with his father, mother, and oftentimes Rachel. Sacred memories. “I can also see that you really want something,” Abba said after several moments of silence had passed.

Chapter 16
Eli, who’d been trying to figure out how to best word his request, decided to simply blurt it right out. “I want to come with you to work,” he said, his voice coming out in a rush. “You’ve been so busy since we arrived here in Vienna, and I have the day off today. Maybe I can come with you.” Mr. Katz adjusted his glasses so that they sat on the bridge of his nose, and he stared down at his son. “Vienna isn’t Holland,” he said quietly, but it was almost as if he were talking to himself and weighing his words rather than talking to his son. “Are you going with Abba to his office, Eli?” Rachel asked, her voice materializing from seemingly nowhere as she sprang cheerfully into the kitchen, curls bouncing. “Can I come too, Abba, please? Pretty please?” Mr. Katz looked at Rachel and then Eli. He reached up to adjust the small yarmulke on his hair. “The embassy here isn’t like the one in Holland,” he began again, his voice demure, but after a moment his face softened, and his next words were injected with oomph. “But you know what — why not? I’m only a diplomat, not an ambassador, and there’s really no reason why I can’t bring my kids to work. At least not today.” Again, Eli got the feeling that his father was talking more to himself than he was talking to his children, but he drew a deep breath anyway, waiting for his father to arrive at a satisfactory decision. At long last he did. “I’m going to call them. It should be fine.” Abba rose. Eli and Rachel exchanged wordless expressions of joy as Abba inserted his hand into his pocket and removed his phone. “I’ll make the call from my car, and in the meantime, you can tell Ima that you’re coming with me. Come outside in ten minutes.”
Two minutes was time enough to do what his father had asked, Eli thought, and he couldn’t help but think that the extra eight minutes were probably for Abba to speak directly to his boss. “By the way, Eli, if you’re thinking of coming to Abba’s work like that, think again,” Rachel said, pointing down to Eli’s footwear. “Since when do brown and gray socks match?” With a moan, Eli went off to change, and Rachel stood in front of the nearest mirror to smooth down her hair. From the master bedroom area came the sounds of Ima puttering around. Rachel and Eli quickly finished their sprucing up and knocked on the bedroom door to inform her of their plans. “And Abba okayed this?” Ima asked, a note of incredulity slipping into her voice. “Yeah,” Eli said. He looked at Rachel’s face to see if she too thought Ima’s reaction was over the top, but she seemed completely oblivious. What were his parents so worried about? Why shouldn’t he and Rachel be allowed to accompany Abba to the embassy in Vienna? In Holland they’d done so all the time. “Eli made Abba his favorite orange juice,” Rachel added as she and Eli turned to leave. “There’s more for you in the fridge,” Eli added. The kids waved goodbye and left the house. A strange feeling filled Eli’s chest as he stepped over the threshold of his front door. Only yesterday he and Jake had found a scarylooking note in that spot — and Abba had been tight-lipped in his explanations after he’d shown it to his father. why he’d asked for a ten-minute respite in his car before the children would come outside? “Another Sunday workday, eh?” Mr. Katz said lightly as Eli and Rachel buckled themselves into their respective seats. “Remember not to touch anything breakable in the office and to keep yourselves well out of trouble. We don’t need anyone getting annoyed.” “We’ve grown up since Holland,” Rachel said, but her pout merely caused Eli to roll his eyes. The car rolled through the streets of the city with ease before turning into the First District, where the embassy was located. About twenty minutes after they’d left their house, they parked in front of a large, nondescript building with Israeli flags on it. “We’re here,” Abba announced. “The Shagrirut HaYisraeilit — Israeli embassy.” To enter the building they needed to go through a security check — replete with metal detectors and
overhearing. Eli stiffened. He wondered if his sister was right and if there was indeed some sort of threat hovering over them. Actually, he knew that there was. But was the threat related to the embassy? Abba, several paces in front of the kids, waved at several embassy workers before leading the children through a small network of offices that eventually led to a small office. “Welcome to my humble abode,” Abba announced in a drawl. “How can I help my two favorite Israeli citizens?” Helping Israelis outside of Israel was Abba’s job description as a diplomat. But somehow, as Eli watched him turn on his computer and screw his forehead up with concern, Eli couldn’t help but wonder if Abba was perhaps involved in something else as well.

It was strange that the guards had checked him so completely just now, when he was an official employee. “It’s like they’re scared of some threat here,” Rachel whispered. The hippopotamus-which means river horse in Greekis the third largest animal on land (after the elephant and rhinoceros) and can weigh up to 6,000 pounds (3 tons!). With a barrel-shaped torso, wide-open mouth revealing deadly teeth, nearly hairless body, and thick, column-like legs, it is easily recognizable. Despite the fact that hippos generally eat grass, they are of the deadliest animals in Africa. Extremely aggressive, most deaths are attributed to them.

The hippopotamus remains in water for 18 hours a day. At night, it emerges to eat grass, of which it can eat 150 pounds at once. Though the hippo spends a lot of time in water, it surfaces every 3-5 minutes for air. A young hippo, which needs to breathe every 2-3 minutes, is pushed to the surface by its mother (see left photo). Hakadosh Baruch created the hippo so that it can breathe automatically, even while asleep underwater, Though its nostrils are hermetically sealed, it rises to the surface, exposing its nostrils (which are, b’ hashgacha pratis above its head!) to air. Hippos are very wild, often attacking people, animals, and even other hippos(!)without rhyme or reason. A mother can be especially aggressive when protecting her child. She zealously attacks, and sometimes kills, those she suspects of threating her child.

Living in herds containing approximately 30 hippos (though the number can reach over 100), one male is designated as king and everyone must be submissive to him. If anyone revolts, the king approaches the ‘rebel’, opens his huge mouth, and bites him with his sharp teeth. If the rebel doesn’t instantly submit to the king’s will, he is killed. Hakadosh Baruch Hu bestowed the hippo with special features that allow it to open its mouth almost to 180 degrees. Its teeth continuously grow, and can reach a !length of over 18 inches Interestingly enough, hippos share territory with another deadly animal; the crocodile (see aerial photo below). Since crocodiles only eat meat, and hippos only grass, they can co-exist; there is no fight for food. However, when a crocodile gets in the hippo’s way-or if the hippo is simply in the mood-it can, bring an end to the crocodile’s existence with one deadly bite. In water, the hippo is quite slow moving, at 5 mph. On land, however, it can run at 20 mph if necessary.

Healthy Vibes NO REFLETION ON ANYTHING ELSE: People think that if they are emotional eaters then they must not have the rest of their life together either. This is very false! The most put together people can be emotional eaters. Yes, it’s possible to have every single area in your life under control except for your behaviour around food. Sooooo..... WHY does it bother us? According to studies conducted on thousands of women across many countries and cultures, concern about weight ranked as number one or two on women’s priority lists, higher than job or financial concerns and for many even higher than relationship concerns. Which brings us to ask again, WHY? 1. We wear it on us making it harder to hide than other addictions. Unless someone is a rare lucky species that doesn’t gain weight, it’s literally worn on us and can not be hidden. 2. Weight and size are often related to self worth, especially in some cultures/communities. 3. We don’t like to feel like we have a loss of control. People like to feel like they can control their behaviours and actions. No one wants to or likes to feel out of control. 4. Many health issues are blamed on weight even if it’s not our fault or our own doing, even when issues are genetic. I hear many stories of doctors being quick to blame medical issues (both minor and major) on one’s weight without even taking into account other factors such as genetics. LET’S BE ACCURATE Is a binge and emotional eating the same thing?
labelling terms such as “I had a huge binge” while all they did was eat some extra food. In my own non clinician way of differentiating the two I simply say that if you can pretty much list everything you ate then that’s NOT a binge. Who Cares? Isn’t it just semantics? Why do we want to differentiate between the two? You know how teachers are instructed not to give out opinions or labels on their students to the next teacher because she will treat them accordingly? Or how you should never label yourself or your child but rather their behaviour so that they don’t act like their label. It’s because labels cause us to continue or give ourselves a prognosis, often making it worse. It’s almost a self fulfilling prophecy. Challenge: Identify your reasons for eating when not hungry and keep a log. Which letter of the acronym is it mostly? Angry? Lonely? Tired ? Stressed? Foodie? Bored ? Write down 5 reasons this bothers you and why you want to stop. Only one reason can be about weight. Styrofoam

Knife

Paint in beige and dark brown (Warning: Do not use acetone-based paint, as it dissolves Styrofoam.)

Paintbrush

Drop cloth to protect your workspace

Hot glue gun or regular glue

A board made of MDF or strong, thick cardboard (this will be the base)

Glitter in gold and rose

Vibes of Craft
Step 1: Using the brown paint, fully cover the MDF board or cardboard background that you’ll be using as your base.
Step 2: Take your knife and cut out stone shapes from the Styrofoam. They should not be perfect or symmetrical. Make some bigger and some smaller, like the real bricks of the Kosel.
Step 3: Take the knife and shave the Styrofoam “stones” so that they become jagged and worn looking.
Step 4: Paint the “stones” with the beige paint. While the paint is wet carefully apply the glitter to the edges of the stone. Don’t use too much glitter — a little goes a long way, and we just want an effect here, not a kindergarten project.
Step 5: After the stones are dry, glue them to the dry painted baseboard.
Step 6: Put one dot of glue on each of the four corners of your printout, and paste it on top of the “Kosel.” As the glue is clear, this should look very clean.
Step 7: Glue some string to the back of the board so you can hang it. Simply take a strong string and glue each side to the back, making a loop for it to hang on a nail. Each time you gaze at your project, try to remember to do something small to bring the geulah one step closer. This will bring Hashem a lot of nachas — that you used some of your free time to make something to remember Him.

My mother pulled into a gas station on Friday afternoon. After her car was filled up with gas, she combed through her pocketbook until she realized she had no credit card on her to pay the $66. The credit card was having an extended stay in my father's wallet, so my mother had sufficed with ApplePay for the whole week. But unfortunately, the gas station wasn't as accommodating and didn't accept ApplePay. My mother came across a Visa gift card and offered it to the clerk. But as it turned out, the gift card would not work to pay the gas bill either. The gas clerk began to get impatient and my mother started to count her cash. She didn't usually carry much cash around but figured it didn't hurt to check. The employee watched her carefully as my mother counted her bills. A few minutes later my mother handed over all the remaining cash in her purse - the exact total of $66. We saw major hashgacha pratis from here. My mother didn't have $65 in her purse nor $67. She had just the right amount to pay the gas bill and we clearly saw the wonders of Hashem. Thank You Hashem!

My mother used to work in a place and one day, they laid my mother off her job. The next day, my mother didn’t go to work so she took my sister to playgroup. When she came back, she saw smoke coming out of my house. She ran inside and saw that the downstairs bathroom was on fire. She started screaming. My family’s neighbor (I Wasn’t born yet) must have heard her and saw smoke coming out of the house so the neighbor came and took the fire extinguisher and put the fire out. It was that my mother was fired from her job so that she was home by the fire so it didn’t burn my whole house down!

It was such hashgacha that they had it so that they were able to eat something because they came home so late
