S

o, there’s been an increase in minimum wage this month in New Jersey (and in 21 other states). This means that in Lakewood, minimum wage is up from $14.13 per hour to $15.13 for lowest- level earners.

The logic behind the increase is that more money lining the wallets of minimum- wage workers means more spend thrift spending habits. This means an increase of spending within the general consumer market, which will lead to an increase of spending in the more middle-class consumer market, which will lead to an increase of spending in the upper-class consumer market….

When our economics teacher in eleventh grade taught this to us, it all made perfect sense. If the end goal is to protect workers on the lowest end of the earning pole against inflation, then an obvious way to do that is to give them more money.

In researching this idea for this editorial, however, I realized that the result isn’t that simple.

(Things rarely are, eh?). Apparently, opponents to minimum -wage increases argue that if minimum- wage earners make more money, it will lead to increased spending within the general consumer market, which will lead to an increase of spending in the more middle class consumer market, which will lead to an increase of spending in the upper- class consumer market, which will, in fact, lead to — you guessed it — more inflation.

Apparently, the jury is still out on the advantages vs. the disadvantages of minimum- wage increase, so I’m going to leave that riddle to the financial speculators to solve. But the reason that the topic interested me to begin with was because of it’s not- so- subtle similarity to the effect that one Jew’s mitzvah has on another.

Remember that famous mashal of a man who makes a hole in a boat? He tells the concerned

passengers around him, “Don’t worry, the hole is under my seat only, you won’t be affected by it.”Well, the nimshal for that mashal is that every Jew’s mitzvah (or it’s opposite) will automatically affect another. Kol Yisrael areivim zeh lazeh. We Jews are responsible for one another.

Period.

On a logical level, the mashal makes sense. I’ve known for years (ever since I heard the mashal in fourth grade) that it’s true. And this is because Chazal taught us that it is so. But on a deeper, more emotional, level, I’ve never truly been able to understand it. How? Why? How can it be that a mitzvah done in the privacy of one Yid’s home will affect Yidden all across the globe?

And then October 7 happened. But along with the atrocities, we’ve seen an unprecedented increase of goodness all around. Jews in Smalltown, USA, are doing mitzvos to help the Jews of Eretz Yisrael. To add to their shemirah.

And it’s working. Every day of safety in Eretz Yisrael, every home that is safe, is a miracle.

Because yes, every mitzvah does have a ripple affect. No matter which way you look at things in economics, it works that way, and it works that way in our daily lives as well.

Mitzvos are our currency, and the uncertainty and darkness is the inflation that we’re battling against.

Every mitzvah is worth its weight in more than just gold.

BO Vayeishev The Influence of One’s Surroundings In the beginning of Parashas Bo, Moshe and Aharon come before Pharaoh and demand that he allow Bnei Yisrael to leave Mitzrayim. They warn him that if he refuses, Hashem will send the makkah of Locusts.

Pharaoh’s servants turn to him and implore him to agree. Pharaoh then says to Moshe and Aharon, “Go and serve your G-d; which ones are going?” Moshe answers, “With our young ones and elders we will go, with our sons and daughters, with our sheep and cattle…we shall go.”

Pharaoh doesn’t agree to their request to send the children and claims that it’s not the way of children to participate in services.

After the makkah of Darkness, Pharaoh calls Moshe and tells him he may depart to serve Hashem but must leave behind the sheep and cattle. Moshe answers, “And our livestock will go with us, not a hoof will be left” (Shemos 10:26).

The Chasam Sofer questions Moshe’s responses to Pharaoh in both of these instances. When Pharaoh said the children must remain behind, Moshe said they would come. When Pharaoh later said the cattle had to stay behind, Moshe retorted that they would leave as well. What is the wording of Moshe’s refusal coming to teach us?

The Chasam Sofer explains that Moshe was stating that even if he, Moshe, would agree for the cattle remain behind, it wouldn’t help. The cattle would leave on their own in order to enable Bnei Yisrael to have animals to bring as sacrifices. The strength of Bnei Yisrael’s desire to serve Hashem would influence the cattle to leave.

This is similar to Eliyahu HaNavi’s cow (Melachim I, chapter18) that went on its own to Eliyahu and requested that it be sacrificed on the mizbei’ach in order to sanctify Hashem’s name. Similarly, the Gemara and midrash tell us about the donkey of Rav Pinchas ben Yair, which refused to eat from food from which maaser had not been taken. The fear of Heaven of the donkey’s owner was so great that it influenced the animal as well.

With this idea, the Chasam Sofer explains the pasuk in Tehillim “Do good onto your favor, Zion” (51:20), meaning that the knowledge of Hashem should increase in the world. The pasuk immediately following states, “Then the bulls will go up onto the mizbei’ach.” Here too the animals will come forward on their own to be sacrificed because they will have been influenced by the increase in kavod Shamayim and want to serve Hashem.

This is what Moshe meant when he told Pharaoh that the children would leave despite Pharaoh’s claim that it’s not the way of children to bring sacrifices.

Moshe was explaining that there was no way he could stop the children from leaving — because they would be going from their own desire to serve Hashem.

Just as the generation of the Mabul was so deeply steeped in impurity that even the animals acted improperly, the positive influence of an environment can have such a strong effect that even the children would want to leave to serve Hashem. When the atmosphere of the world is purified through good deeds, whoever is within this world is affected positively.

Rav Zilberstein, shlita, encourages every parent and teacher to create this environment for their children. What a child or student observes in their surroundings at home or in school has tremendous influence on him forever.

It is therefore incumbent on us to be a living example of positivity and perform mitzvos with happiness and enjoyment.

He relates the following story, told over by Rav Yosef Avrohom Wolf, the past principal of a school in Bnei Brak. In the time of the Nachal Eshkol (Rav Tzvi Binyamin Auerbach), when the Christian missionaries did all they could to ensnare innocent Jews and force them to renege on their religion, a Jewish child was snatched away from a respectable, influential family in Germany and placed in a monastery. Despite the parents’ protests and connections, the Christians refused to release the child. The parents and community went to

court, but the monastery claimed that the child was not kidnapped but instead was an authentic Christian.

For years, the parents tried with all their effort to find a way to free their son.

They finally succeeded in speaking to a judge who respected Jews and was willing to help them. After hearing the claims of both sides, the judge turned to the parents.

“I hear your claim, but who can pledge that you’re speaking the truth? Maybe the monastery is right. However, I will grant you a onetime opportunity to prove you’re correct. I will demand permission for you to enter the monastery and sit together with the child for five minutes, you or your representative. If you succeed in convincing the child to leave with you in those five minutes, it will be a sign that you are correct. But if not, he will remain there forever.”

The parents left the judge slightly encouraged but with no idea how to succeed in this seemingly impossible task. The child had been exposed to heretical ideas for years; how would they be able to convince him to return to them?

They went to the Nachal Eshkol for direction. The gaon calmed the parents, strengthened their trust in Hashem, and declared, “I will go with you to the meeting with your son, and with Hashem’s help, we will convince him to return to Judaism.

The day of the fateful meeting arrived. The Nachal Eshkol escorted the parents as promised, dressed in the kittel and white yarmulke that he was accustomed to wearing on Yom Kippur.

Now they had five minutes to meet. The tension was palpable. The parents and rav sat on one side, while the child, who looked visibly different from how they remembered him, sat across from them. The rav didn’t say a word, Quietly, he began to hum the well-known tune from Kol Nidrei. The child listened and listened, and they could see him reacting and even shedding a tear. The rav continued to sing the words of Kol Nidrei from beginning to end for three long minutes.

Two minutes were left.

The rav quietly asked, “Do you want to come with us and merit this world and the next, or do you want to stay here in the monastery?”

There was quiet. The parents’ hearts froze in trepidation.

Suddenly, as if from a dream, the child stood up, and with stormy emotions on his face, fell into his parents’ embrace and screamed, “Take me out of here. I don’t want to stay even one more minute. Take me back to the shul where I heard that tune with those words.”

Rav Wolf concluded, “The responsibility of an educator and parent is so vast. They can create surroundings that cause everlasting influence on impressionable children.” Rav Zilberstein adds that it doesn’t have to be a huge thing that influences a child. The Steipler used to serve an additional food on Rosh Chodesh to create a special atmosphere. Rav Elyashiv would give special attention to small minhagim because he understood their power.

With small and important actions, we too can create surroundings where our children are impressed by the kedushah and will want to follow us just as the children of Mitzrayim desired on their own to leave with Moshe Rabbeinu.

Reb Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter The Sefas Emes

(April 15, 1847–January 11, 1905) Shira Yael Klein

Reb Yaron Amit heard the following story from his mother. When her father was a bachur, he was drafted into the Russian army. He tried every possible tactic to get out of it, but nothing worked. He even enlisted a well-known wealthy man, Reb Leibel, to help him. Reb Leibel was extremely wealthy, with an extensive network of business connections. He was friendly with the government authorities in Petersburg, and especially with the high-ranking army officers.

Reb Leibel made a special trip to the top brass to try to get the bachur off the hook. But even when he offered very large sums of money — thousands of rubles — he wasn’t successful.

When the bachur saw that he was in trouble, he traveled to Gur to meet with the Rebbe, the Sefas Emes.

The Sefas Emes told him, “You pay twenty rubles, and you’ll get out of the army.”

The bachur parted from the Sefas Emes and went straight to Reb Leibel. He handed him twenty rubles. “Do what you can with this money to get me out of the army.”

Reb Leibel understood that the bachur hadn’t gone crazy; he guessed that he must have gone to some Rebbe. But Reb Leibel was a misnaged. “So which Rebbe did you go to?” he asked in a bit of a

mocking tone.

At first the bachur refused to reveal which Rebbe he’d gone to. He didn’t want Reb Leibel to slight the Sefas Emes’s honor. But he saw that if he didn’t tell Reb Leibel to whom he’d gone, Reb Leibel wouldn’t help him.

“I went to the Sefas Emes,” he said quietly.

When Reb Leibel heard that the bachur was acting on the advice of the Sefas Emes, he summoned his servant to hitch his horse and carriage, donned his fur coat, and set out for Petersburg.

Reb Leibel returned half a day later, army exemption in hand.

Reb Leibel explained that when he’d reached the army headquarters, he found the officers drinking. When they saw him, they asked him to get them a bottle of premium vodka.

But Reb Leibel refused.

When they insisted that he get it for them, he said, “If you give me what I want, I’ll give you what you want.”

They burst into drunken laughter.

What was a signature on a piece of paper worth compared to a good bottle of vodka?

Reb Leibel pulled the twenty rubles out of his pocket and sent his servant to go buy the vodka that the officers wanted. In return, they gave Reb Leibel the army exemption that he’d requested.

The bachur asked Reb Leibel, “Why did you spring into action the minute you heard that I’d gone to the Sefas Emes?”

“As you know, I don’t have any children,” replied Reb Leibel.

“I went to the top doctors and promised them huge sums of money if they could help me. But nothing worked. Then I started going from one gadol to another. I promised them that on the day that I would have a son or daughter, I would give them half of my assets.

Many gedolim and Rebbes gave me berachos and promises that I would have children, but nothing helped.

“Finally, I came to the Sefas Emes.

I promised him half of my vast wealth if I would have a child. The Sefas Emes looked at me and said, ‘Young man, you are not going to have children. Do good things with your money!’

“The Sefas Emes didn’t tell me that I would have a yeshuah, even though he could have gotten very rich from it. So when he told you that you would be able to get out of the army with twenty rubles, I knew that it would happen — even if I had no idea how.”

The Sefas Emes’s yahrzeit is Hei Shevat.

Reb Moshe ben Yonatan Galante The Magen (1620–February 4, 1689)

Shira Yael Klein The Magen was born into a rabbinic family in Tzefas, during the time when Eretz Yisrael was part of the Ottoman empire. At the age of thirty-four he moved to Yerushalayim, where he later succeeded his father-in-law as the rosh yeshivah of Yeshivat Bet Yaakov.

The Magen became the leading rav in Yerushalayim in his time. He traveled extensively in Europe in order to help raise the funds that the Jews in Eretz Yisrael depended on. Interestingly, the false mashiach Shabtai Tzvi was active during the Magen’s time. The rabbanim of Yerushalayim, led by the Magen, were among Shabtai Tzvi’s staunchest opponents.

Everyone was amazed at his strange request, but they nonetheless did as he instructed. The crowd began making its way towards the kever. A Muslim officer saw the crowd of Jews trudging along carrying their winter clothing as the hot sun beat down on them.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“This is what our rabbi told us to do. I guess it’s going to rain,” they answered him.

“You guys are crazy. Tomorrow all you nuts will be out of here for good!”

The Magen was known for the miracles he performed. In 1676, when he was fifty-seven years old, there was a great famine. It hadn’t rained for a few years, and the crops hadn’t grown. Disease and death were rampant. The Jews fasted, davened, gave tzedakah, wore sackcloth, and went to kivrei tzaddikim — but there was still no rain.

The Magen summoned the community leaders. He instructed them to gather the men, women, and children in all of the shuls, where they would fast and daven for three days straight. On the third day, he instructed everyone who had fasted to gather at the kever of Shimon HaTzaddik. They were to bring their winter coats and rain boots — even though it was hot outside.

On their way back, they bumped into a very wet Muslim officer — the very same one who had slapped the Magen only a short while earlier. The officer fell to the ground at the Magen’s feet and begged for forgiveness. He kissed the Magen’s shoes and carried him all the way back home.

The next morning, the officer returned.

He asked to speak to the Magen privately. He confided that he wanted to convert, and begged in tears to be accepted as a Jew.

The Muslim pasha blamed the Jews for the drought. “It must be that you Jews aren’t praying enough for rain. If it doesn’t rain within three days, all the Jews of Jerusalem will be banished from the city without so much as a shirt on their backs!” he warned the Magen.

But the sudden downpour didn’t catch the Jews unprepared. The Magen instructed them to put on the winter clothing they had brought with them and return home singing songs of praise and gratitude to Hashem.

Outside, the rain kept pouring down constantly for three days and three nights. The water cisterns filled up, and yet it continued to rain. They began filling up barrels, water flasks, jugs, and containers with the precious water. The parched ground soaked up the bounty, and the grim expressions were washed off of the people’s faces. The Muslims saw the great miracle and honored the Magen and the rest of the Jews.

The officer walked over to the Magen and hit him hard in the face.

The Magen was silent and didn’t respond, and his people continued following him to the kever. When they got there, they davened for rain from the bottom of their hearts.

Soon, a huge storm appeared out of nowhere. Fierce winds tore roofs off of houses and uprooted trees. Huge dark clouds covered the sky. The rain began pouring down.

As for the Muslim officer, he learned the halachos of being a Jew, and in time he did indeed convert. He lived the rest of his life as a faithful eved Hashem.

Chapter 20 RECAP: Jamie from the bowling alley of fers to ask his teenage techie cousin to tr y to retrieve the deleted minutes from the CCT V. The Felds head home with Jamie’s promise to reach out to his cousin as soon as he can.

It was more than a bit of a miracle that we all arrived home safe. Rikki was snoring softly in the back seat, Debbie was snoring softly in the front passenger seat, and I was desperately trying not to snore softly in the driver’s seat.

Luckily, there weren’t many cars on the road at that hour.

And my concern wasn’t speeding. I knew the automatic speed cameras were out in full force, eager to make some money for the council. And so, gentle reader, I became one of those annoying people who drove BELOW the speed limit and blocked the traffic on the road. Although, at 1:00 a.m. there wasn’t much traffic to block.

We got home at 1:15 a.m. I woke up my gentle snorers.

They ignored me. I stood outside my car, looking around the street, wondering what to do.

And then I saw Xavier Roberts. He too was getting out of his car outside his house. He and I stood there in the street, looking at each other with understanding in our eyes.

He’d been following me.

But how? I hadn’t seen any cars in my rearview mirror.

This was too much. I walked over to him. He looked even 32

bigger in the dark. Bigger and, if at all possible, balder.

Maybe that’s how monsters originated, by looking bigger in the dark. Scary.

“You were following me,” I said.

“I was following you?” he repeated. “You saw me follow you?”

“Well, no,” I admitted, feeling somewhat stupid. “But…” Xavier came closer, invading my personal space. I’m quite territorial about my personal space, and he was right in it. I took a step back. He took a step forward.

“Don’t accuse if you’ve got no evidence, my dear neighbor,” he said in a decidedly un-dear-neighborly tone. And then he wheeled around, left my personal space — thank heavens — and went into his house.

Was he playing games with me? Torturing me mentally?

Making me doubt my own sanity? That last one was a walk in the park.

I went back to my car and this time had success in waking up the gentle snorers. Rikki immediately started to cry. “I won’t sleep tonight without knowing what’s happened to Avi!” she 732.930.2500

asked, impatient suddenly, grabbing my phone from me.

“Uh, you just did, sweetheart,” I pointed out.

She tried calling the number. A computerized voice said, “The number you dialed is not in service.”

Rikki glared at me. “Semantics, Dad. You know what I mean.”

Debbie’s phone beeped. Then mine, almost simultaneously.

We both looked down. It was a photo message.

Avi. Not from Avi. It was of Avi. And no, he wasn’t tied to a chair and with a gag in his mouth.

He was just looking at the camera and looking a whole lot like Avi. The accompanying message read: I’m Ok. More when I can.

What? That was it?! Nothing else?

I looked at Debbie, who was looking as shell-shocked as I was.

“What?” Rikki asked.

Wordlessly, I handed her my phone.

“Avi didn’t send this,” Rikki said, looking at it. “Someone else took his pic and sent it.”

“Well, duh, Sherlock,” I said. I was still in shock, so witty comebacks were at a premium.

“Probably wrote the message too,” Rikki said.

“Which means?” I asked with a sinking feeling — because I knew the answer.

“Which means nothing,” Rikki said. “It doesn’t mean he’s okay, it doesn’t mean he’s not okay. It just means nothing.”

“It means,” Debbie said, “that someone has him and is going to communicate more later. That’s all it means. Did you notice something?” she added. “We weren’t told not to tell the police. Usually, this kind of communication says that.”

“I think it’s probably a burner phone,” Rikki said. “They sent the message, then took the SIM out and chucked it.”

All three of us just stood there outside our house, at one thirty in the morning, feeling like we didn’t belong anywhere in this world. Our house, once so welcoming and comforting a place, now glowered at us threateningly. Because of him.

The guy next door.

“Well,” Debbie said, once more taking charge where I should have but didn’t, “I say we all go in and try to get some sleep.

I don’t see the point in standing around out here. Yes, Avi is missing, and yes, it doesn’t look good, but we need sleep in order to function, and if we’re going to be clear-headed tomorrow, we’d better try to at least sleep.”

Rikki looked at her. “It’s today, not tomorrow. It’s already tomorrow now.”

I pulled at my already-less-thanplentiful crowning glory and held out my hand. “Want some more hairs to split? Here, have some of mine.”

We were both being churlish and ridiculous, and we both knew it.

Debbie looked from one to the other of us, and then put on her I’m-theboss face. In case it wasn’t already on.

“Right. Bed. All of us. Now.” There was no argument to be had.

We were marched indoors, and Rikki was sent immediately upstairs, where she went with a cup of water. I watched her stumble up the stairs, so tired she almost couldn’t walk straight. I knew how she felt.

“I feel,” I said to Debbie as I took my own cup of water, “like going next door and punching that man in the nose.”

“Yeah, you’re right,” I said, looking at my phone for the thousandth time. “Do you think it means that we should? Tell the police, I mean.”

“I know, dear,” Debbie said in a tone usually reserved for calming down a two-year-old in the throes of a tantrum.

“Save it for the morning. Punches on the nose don’t go moldy.”

“Well,” Debbie said thoughtfully, looking at her phone again, “maybe they just know no one listens to that. Everyone calls the police anyway.”

She knew me too well. She knew I was too meek and mild to actually carry out that threat. Especially with a big guy like Xavier Roberts.

“Do they?” Rikki asked. “I’m not so sure. If I was told not to tell the police or bad things would happen, I don’t think I would.”

I never thought I’d sleep that night.

“Well,” I said. I had the feeling that authority was slowly leeching away from me, Man of the House, and that it was being taken over by the females in it. “I think we should tell the police.”

But somehow, within eighty seconds of hitting my pillow, I did.

Parve Lemon Cheesecake 1 ready pie crust 1 Tofutti parve cream cheese 1 egg

1 egg white

1 tsp. Bakers Choice vanilla extract ½ cup sugar

1 ½ Tbsp. flour

6 oz. Bakers Choice Lemon Cream TOPPING Bakers Choice raspberry jam or doughnut jelly

DIRECTIONS: Beat together all ingredients well.

Pour the batter into the pie crust.

Bake on 350ºF for 30 minutes.

Let cheesecake cool in closed oven for 30 minutes.

Spread a thin layer of raspberry jam on top, cut into 8 slices and garnish each slice with desired fruit.

GARNISH IDEAS: Candied lemon (slice lemons thinly, sprinkle on sugar and bake on 350ºF for 45 minutes).

Mango, kiwi, pomegranate, apricot, plum, sliced almonds, and coconut flakes.

STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS Rifka Schoenfeld

KIDS CALLED NERDS: CAN THEY SUCCEED SOCIALLY? Picture a bunch of 12-year old boys at recess playing basketball.

Daniel, a boy who has trouble making friends, attempts to join the game. His overtures are ignored or rejected. After some pestering and sulking, Daniel suddenly intrudes on the game, seizing the ball and dribbling it away. Classmates from both teams protest loudly and rush after Daniel to retrieve the ball.

One of his classmates grabs the ball from Daniel while another shoves Daniel roughly to the side, yelling “Get lost, nerd!” Daniel grabs a clod of dirt from the ground and hurls it into the boy’s face.

In moments, the basketball game disintegrates into an exciting new free-for-all: teaching Daniel a lesson. Daniel soon has seven or eight boys chasing him and it takes two teachers to break up the fist fight when they finally catch him.

Daniel has managed to become the focus of the attention he craves from his classmates, but his intrusion on the game and his devil-maycare bravado have only isolated him further. With bruises, tears and the pain of being further ostracized the only “fruits of war,” Daniel’s social problems have clearly worsened.

The next time the boys choose teams for basketball, they make a point of not including Daniel. Even worse, one boy singles him out for ridicule, announcing loudly, “Daniel can’t play. He’s a big fat nerd!” The others laugh and turn away.

Thus, the cycle of exclusion punctuated by the child’s attempts to work his way into the group which triggers further rejection, continues. Is there hope for children like Daniel who are perpetually “on the outs” with their peers? How does this bleak situation begin in the first place? Why are some children unable to find a friend in the class, unable to integrate and blend in with the group?

Social Awareness By Osmosis The lack of peer acceptance is one of the most painful problems young children can experience in school, advises Dr. Betty Osman, a noted expert and author on educational topics. “Computers and calculators can help children with writing, reading skills and math, but there is no similar technology to help them handle a lonely recess at school, or afternoons and weekends at home when they cannot get together with a friend.”

Some children seem born to make life easy for parents — and for themselves as well. They appear to develop social awareness early in life, by example and “osmosis.” As they grow, they display good “people skills” — a sense of humor, a positive attitude toward life

and empathy for others--qualities guaranteed to win friends.

In many children, however, this internal process does not operate well.

Research has indicated that children with learning disabilities often fail to pick up social skills and experience more difficulty making and keeping friends than young people without these problems.

Yet, quite often children who academically are well within the mainstream, suffer from these disadvantages as well.

What is the nature of these social disabilities and what, if anything, can parents do to help their children and adolescents “fit in”?

Social Disabilities Occur on Three Levels: Education experts identify three different areas of learning and behavior where these deficits are most manifest.

•The first is a cognitive deficit, lack of knowledge of how to conduct oneself in a given social situation — how to observe the unwritten rules of social decorum. Intervention on this level consists of teaching the requisite skill in much the same way as a new math concept or social studies lesson might be presented.

•The second might be referred to as a “performance deficit” and shows up in children or adolescents who understand appropriate behavior and what is expected, but their own needs interfere with their intellectual comprehension. Some children who understand the concept of fair play and know they should show good sportsmanship, simply can’t bear to lose, so they break the rules to make sure that they win. These children have the skills but are unable to apply them.

•Still others with social difficulties know how to act and can suppress their needs appropriately, but they lack the ability to evaluate their own or others’ behavior. They don’t understand the effect of their actions and, cannot anticipate social consequences.

Children with these issues generally perceive themselves as the victims of others’ mistreatment. They take little responsibility for their actions, blaming others or simply “bad luck” for events in their lives.

To help young people with social problems, it is important to understand on what level they are having trouble. Communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal, have deep social implications. Children who don’t “read” body language, facial expressions and vocal inflections well are likely to miss important signals in life that are apparent to others.

Social Acceptance Is Crucial Many educational experts and psychologists have come to view the social domain as important as academic instruction. They say that parents cannot afford to ignore their children’s social difficulties. The consequences are too great for the child and the family.

To help children develop better social skills, parents might consider practicing certain strategies and tips at home, or hiring someone trained in social skills coaching to teach some basic strategies, including: •How to initiate, maintain, and end a conversation •The art of negotiation — how to compromise to get what you want in appropriate ways, without stepping on others’ feelings or rights •How to be assertive without being aggressive •How to apologize •How to give and receive compliments •Practice how to accept constructive criticism •How to respond to teasing and bullying by peers

Bullying Bullying, a distinct problem in many classrooms, deserves separate treatment in another article. But since it is often the socially inept child who is the victim of bullying, a few words about this widespread problem are in order here.

Bullying is the deliberate attempt to intimidate, hurt or frighten someone with words or actions. It can include teasing, name-calling, preventing others from going where they want to or doing what they want to, pushing or hitting, and other forms of physical or verbal abuse.

Children who bully others do it for a variety of reasons. It makes them feel more important and more popular. It makes them forget their own shortcomings and inadequacies. They do it to make themselves feel tough or in control. They do it to get a laugh.

Often bullies will choose children who seem easy to hurt. They may pick on children who look or are different in some way; struggle with schoolwork; are not good at sports; lack social confidence; are anxious or unable to hold their own because of being smaller, weaker or younger.

Look Out For Telltale Signs Children who are being bullied may not always tell adults. They may be afraid or ashamed. They may worry that they will be blamed for causing it. Some signs of being bullied may include: •Not wanting to go to school and finding excuses to stay at home.

•Wanting to go to school a different way to avoid the children who are bullying them.

•Being very tense, tearful and unhappy after school.

•Talking about hating school or not having any friends.

•Unexplained bruises or scratches •Refusing to tell a parent what happens at school.

The child may show other signs of unhappiness, such as problems with sleeping or lack of appetite, or generalized anxiety. If bullying is allowed to continue, it can have a very bad effect on the victimized child.

Parents Can Help Parents of a child who is being bullied are often at a loss as to how to deal with the problem. Often the child’s teachers will say that they don’t allow teasing and bullying in their class and that it simply does not happen.

The fact that it is indeed happening—though not under their noses— does not seem to register. Most kids are smart enough to know not to pick on kids when the teacher or any adult is in close proximity, but for the perceptive teacher, signs of it are not hard to pick up.

Be Pro-Active There are several things parents can do to help. These include: •Listen to your child and take her feelings and fears seriously.

•Try not to take everything into your own hands, as this is likely to make your child feel less in control.

•Probe carefully to determine if your child is doing something to provoke the bullying. A socially inept child may not be aware of how he is antagonizing or provoking others.

•If the bullying is verbal teasing, you may be able to help your child learn to ignore it, and not to give satisfaction to the teaser by getting angry or tearful. Practice responses that discourage teasing. (for example, countering a teasing remark with a joke; by appearing to agree with teaser; by walking away with dignity).

•If the bullying happens at school, make a list of incidents in which your child was bullied. Be firm and factual, not emotional. Be prepared to name the children who bully.

•Talk to the teacher and the school principal about the school’s way of dealing with bullying and what steps they take to prevent it and protect children from it. Keep in contact until the problem is sorted out.

•Don’t be intimidated. The school has an obligation to maintain a healthy, safe environment for each and every child.

Children who are the butt of ridicule, teasing or bullying, and children who incur social difficulties on any level require special understanding as well as teacher/parent intervention. Although each young person is unique, all have the same needs — acceptance, approval, a safe environment and a sense of belonging.

In today’s world, experts agree, teachers must educate the whole child, paying careful attention to the child’s social skills and social adjustment as much as to his academic progress. We must go beyond the three R’s to include the fourth one: relationships. This is the key to a child’s happiness, emotional growth and overall productivity.

You WILL gain your weight back unless you don’t.

Huh? What kind of thing is that coming from a nutritionist who has helped thousands of people lose weight and many of them to maintain what they lost? Is that even a grammatically correct sentence? I’m not sure but it’s certainly accurate.

According to a Livestrong article, 95 percent of people who lose weight in a drastic way, gain the weight back plus some. While that’s not surprising when you hear of an extreme diet tactic, what about gaining weight even after a healthy and seemingly sustainable diet?

Yes, that can happen too.

If I had to sum up the main reason people gain weight, I would say it’s because they think their work is over once the scale shows the number they were waiting to see, or the simchah is over, or the dress fits, or they got enough compliments, etc.

No one gets to keep anything in life (or at least not keep it going well) without constant effort. Constant means constant. Not occasional, not periodical, mood-depending or convenience-depending effort, but constant.

I know this is a hard pill to swallow (pun intended) since most people tend to think that the work is over once the weight loss is over. So, let me explain it in my favorite way, through analogies: If you think of anything in your life, your marriage, your home, your sheitel, your business, etc., none of those stay in amazing condition or even in good condition without effort.

Would you blame your sheitel macher if the curls on your sheitel went limp even though you didn’t follow her instructions and put them in rollers after every wear?

Remember how in kallah classes you were taught how important it is for husband and wife to make a set time every week to spend together? It seemed silly then, but then came real life and kids and you realized how right she was.

What about a job or a career? Don’t you need to keep learning new things?

Attend workshops? Connect with your mentor? Even my client who is very respected in the chinuch world tells me that she has a mentor whom she consults with regularly.

Even those who have had weight loss surgery can and do gain weight. Why? Because keeping it off requires constant effort.

Most of our clients that keep the weight off do so because we still have a relationship.

They no longer need to come in weekly or text questions constantly, but they need to maintain a connection with us in some form.

Your nutritionist is like your mentor or life coach or manicurist. She is there to help you upkeep the work you have done, hold you accountable, teach you new information, and help you get back on track when you’re off.

Social or familial pressure can also affect your weight maintenance. Often friends or family tell you that you shouldn’t be losing more weight or they pressure you to join them and eat with them.

Gaining back the weight you lost can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. All those comments telling you you’ll gain back the weight or you yourself thinking that, can lead you to subconsciously sabotage your hard work.

Just like white walls can’t stay perfectly white when you have small kids and

a facial can’t make you look 30 years younger, extreme plans are NOT maintainable. What IS? A sustainable plan is one that allows you to eat all foods in moderation, and also teaches you skills for healthy eating versus just dictating to you what to eat. You need to understand the how and when and why of eating so you can make good food choices on your own. You also need to pre-empt the scenarios that can come up which will challenge your healthy eating plan such as life events, Yomim Tovim, simchos, etc., and come up with a plan to combat the temptations you’ll face on those occasions.

Because no two plans are alike, we figure out what works for each person.

What DOES maintenance look like?

Maintenance doesn’t mean you’re always the same weight. Numbers can and do fluctuate, especially for women. What you want to look for is a twopound range. As long as once a week or so (not more often) when you weigh yourself, you’re within a two-pound range of your ideal weight, then you’re still maintaining your weight-loss goals. We usually add to the plan either a certain number of extra calories or specific foods the person wants. We then monitor it to see how that’s going. As an extreme example, I once had a male client that no matter how much extra I added, he kept losing! I even had him do blood work to see if something was wrong. We finally found the magic number of extra calories he needed so that he wasn’t losing or gaining.

I had a different male client who had no issue staying the same on track on weekdays but for Shabbos, we added a lot more. It’s a very individual process and is ever-changing and must be monitored.

Here are some practical tools to help you maintain your ideal weight: Track what you eat: It’s the number one behavior cited as keeping people on track for the long term. I personally have been tracking what I eat for the last 14 years.

Preplan: Life is busy, so failing to plan is planning to fail, as they say. Planning can mean preparing ahead or just writing out what you’re planning to eat.

Attitude/Perspective Don’t look at healthy eating as a diet or deprivation, look at it as your lifestyle. Touch base frequently with your nutritionist, your diet group, or your weight-loss partner. This is for accountability and inspiration/chizuk.

Remember that weight loss technically isn’t complicated. It’s logical and fixable. Unless you have a medical condition (and even then you can be helped), no weight gain happens “just because.” Out of all the possible issues or challenges there can be in life, this one is the most in your control to fix.

So is keeping weight off hard? Yes. Is it realistic and doable? Also yes!

The next time you hear of people gaining their weight back or predicting YOU will remember that it doesn’t have to be that way. By having a realistic plan to stick to, maintaining accountability, and implementing the healthy eating skills you learned, you CAN do it!

The Junior Diplomats

Recap: Eli and Jake meet up early in the morning to spy on the suspicious men who live across the street. They finally hear suspicious sounds coming from inside the apartment when it’s time for them to go back home. Just as they turn to leave, the door opens, and they’re discovered by the suspicious men.

It was 6:41 a.m.

Rachel peered at her watch for the umpteenth time and bit her lip nervously. She’d watched Eli and Jake cross the street to the building across from theirs, and then she’d watched them fumble with the locked door for two minutes. After that, she’d seen a surly-looking Austrian come out and the boys slip right in behind him.

And yet…

But what had followed after that had been nothing at all.

Even Jake had been convinced. Otherwise, the cool-headed boy would never have agreed to such a wild scheme.

Rachel had been holding her breath, clenching her teeth, and biting her lip for over twenty minutes, waiting for the boys to return.

Instead, however, she saw absolutely no sign of them, and her head just pounded with a million thoughts.

Which meant that either something terrible had happened, or that the boys had grown very, very preoccupied.

6:42 Rachel should have lifted the phone to call Abba. That’s what she and Eli had agreed on. But the thought of worrying Abba for something that might turn out to be a mere slipup on Eli’s part caused her stomach to churn.

Abba wouldn’t be happy that she’d consented to Eli’s wild plan in the first place.

And really, Eli wasn’t the type of boy who worried too much when he was running late. If he’d somehow gotten preoccupied and would be returning at any moment, he’d be annoyed to see her on the phone with Abba — and with reason.

6:46 Eli’s image swam before her eyes. He was too invincible for anything to have happened to him, and he’d sounded so selfassured when he’d laid out his plans the previous night.

“Rachel.”

Rachel spun away from the dining room window at the sound of Ima’s voice.

“Good morning, Rachel,” Ima said. “Is everything okay? I don’t usually find you in the dining room at this time of day.”

“I-I—” Rachel’s tongue stuck to her palate. Hers and Eli’s plan hadn’t taken Ima into account because Ima was usually one of the last risers in the house.

Actually, their plan had clearly not taken into account lots of important things.

Rachel’s face paled. “I… I decided to come and look out the window because I couldn’t sleep.”

“Oh?” Ima lifted an eyebrow. “Looking out the window was supposed to help you sleep?”

Rachel laughed slightly. A nervous laugh. “No…I…uh…” She needed to spit out the awful news. It was 6:50 already.

Ima joined her near the window. “Do you know where Eli is?

I just checked his room, and his bed is unmade, but he’s not here.”

And half the contents of his closet was on the floor too, testimony to his harried departure less than an hour ago.

Chapter 20 heading to the dining room, and she’d nearly recoiled in shock.

“Eli, uh…” Rachel licked her lips. There was no beating around the bush anymore.

No more worrying about Eli growing annoyed with her because really he was right beyond their front door.

And certainly no worrying about not scaring their mother — Rachel needed her help desperately.

Rachel began to cry, and her shoulders began to heave.

“Eli disappeared, Ima! Together with Jake. They wanted to follow some bad guys, but they didn’t come back when they were supposed to! And now I don’t know what to do.”

Ima stared at Rachel for all of one minute before her words sank in. “What? Who disappeared? And how? Oh no, is this related to— Rachel, I think we need to call Abba asap. Please get me my phone fast.”

As Rachel got up to retrieve Ima’s phone from her bedroom, a million thoughts raced through Mrs. Katz’s mind, begging for further answers.

When had the boys disappeared, and under what circumstances? And was this somehow related to their secret mission?

Lillian left the kitchen to the sound of Becky begging for her own tea.

She returned to the kitchen a moment later. “He’s not in his room,” she announced.

“What does that mean?” Mrs. Green said.

Lillian shrugged. “I don’t know. His bed is made and his briefcase is next to his bed. Maybe he decided to run away.”

The Green parents exchanged glances. “No,” Mr. Green said at last. “That doesn’t sound like our Jake. Even if he was very upset about this move in the beginning, he still wouldn’t do something so rash like that.”

“Anyway,” Mrs. Green added, “where would he run to? We don’t know too many people here.”

“Run? Where Jake run?” Becky asked, banging the side of her plate and sending omelet pieces everywhere.

“We don’t know where he ran,” Mrs. Green said. “Or even if he ran anywhere…”

A sequined notebook caught Mrs. Katz’s eye. It was lying in the spot that Rachel had just vacated.

“Maybe he went to the Katzes,” Lillian said. “He’s become really good friends with Eli.”

Mr. and Mrs. Green looked at Lillian, but for a moment it was like they were seeing through her as opposed to seeing her.

Perhaps Rachel’s notebook would supply her with some answers.

Or perhaps it would be evidence in the event that something truly awful was now at play. *** In the Green household, Jake hadn’t bothered to clue in anyone on his plans. Though he’d known that an element of danger existed in following bad guys, the danger had seemed to pale in comparison to the bullies he’d dodged many times in Boston’s countless alleyways.

He’d been far too happy to help Eli in his quest, certain it would end easily enough.

The first sign of his disappearance, therefore, only surfaced at breakfast, when the Greens usually ate together. Today, Jake was a no-show.

“I hope he’s not sick again,” Mrs. Green murmured as she spooned omelets onto a plate.

“Me too,” Mr. Green agreed. “I was starting to think that he was seeing the positive in this move, but all those days that he took off last week are beginning to make me wonder.”

“He was sick.” Mrs. Green shrugged. But she couldn’t

deny that she was worried. “Lillian,” she said, “please go to Jake’s room and tell him that we’re eating breakfast. If something’s bothering him again, I can always make him a tea.”

After a moment, Mr. Green rose. “I’m going to check his room,” he said at last. “Maybe he left some sort of note there.”

But Jake’s room was neat as a pin — as usual — with absolutely no evidence of plans to run away or anything even remotely along those lines.

“I think Lillian might be right. He must have gone to Eli and didn’t think of informing us,” he said as he returned to the kitchen. “I’m going to the Katzes to check.”

“I think I’ll join you,” Mrs. Green said, automatically hoisting Becky out of her high chair as she spoke.

And so it was that Mr. and Mrs. Green slipped out of the house together with Becky, with a curious Rachel on their heels.

As they descended to the second floor of the building, they were startled to feel a rush of fresh air on their faces as the front door of the building was thrown open — and a moment later they saw a disheveled looking Mr. Katz heading toward the same door as they were.

A friend and I were once enjoying recess together, when we heard the bell ring, signaling the end of recess. We were across the building, and so it took us a good three to five minutes in order to get to our classroom. When we entered our grades hallway, we spotted our teacher, who was walking between throngs of girls in the hallway while trying to head toward our classroom. When my friend and I realized this, we made a beeline toward our classroom, in order to avoid getting a late note. We squeezed in between girls, while trying not to bump into anyone. Bchasdie Hashem, we both got to the classroom before our teacher. I was so thankful to Hashem for the Chesed that He had just showered upon us.

As I reflected upon the story, a little while later in the day, I realized the incredible Hashgacha. That day for some inexplicable reason my teacher was walking down the hallway alongside another teacher, making her walk that much slower, something that she rarely does. To add to the incredible Hashgacha, the two teachers stopped in front of my classroom, schmoozing. At that exact moment that our teacher stopped to speak to the other teacher, was when my friend, and I were able to slip into the classroom. Less than a minute later she walked into the classroom. Hashem in His infinite Kindness made my teacher come out of the office together with another teacher, and made them stop and talk, in order that His precious daughter shouldn’t be late to class.

My grandfather was a dentist in Argentina. He was also very involved in building the Jewish community there. One day he had a meeting with a bunch of important people. He was about to leave work to go, when he got a phone call. someone had an emergency with their tooth. He said come right over. He new he would be Afew mints. Late the meeting but didn’t want the person to suffer more . He worked quickly and ran out to catch the bus for the meeting. He was almost there when he heard a HUGE boom!!! A bomb went off in the building where he was supposed to be in. A lot of people were killed. BH someone had an emergency pain and BH my grandfather was so special and always wanted to help everyone! So he was saved!!!

I was walking from Judaica Plaza on Erev Shabbos with my father and siblings back to our car. My father was holding my baby brother in one hand and the car keys in another, when suddenly the keys fell out of his hands into the drain. A Jewish man was passing by and came to help us. He had a hanger in his car and thought that it might help get the key out. We tried but it didn't work. We continued having emuna that Hashem will help us somehow. Suddenly a Goy comes and asks us what happened. We told him and he said I happen to have a fishing rod in my car. He got his rod and tried and tried and tried to get the key out. As he was doing it his rod broke, but he continued until he finally got it out. Baruch Hashem we got our key out. What a hashgacha that this Goy had a fishing rod in his car just for us. Thank you Hashem!

TU B’SHVAT: WHY IT IS ALWAYS FREE TO SUBMIT NAMES FOR TEFILLAH THROUGH YAD L’ACHIM? By: Sara Medina

By the way you can NOW submit names for TU B’SHVAT. For free. Let’s explain.

A bit of context. There are thousands of Jewish women and children that are currently trapped in Arab Villages. Yad L’Achim helps rescue them and allow them to live their lives as free Jews.

We do this work, day in and day out. We work and actively pursue our mission statement: We don't give up on even a single Jew! After the women are rescued, many of them go on to establish beautiful Jewish homes. The sweet sounds of Torah learning emanating from their children is music to Hashem’s ears. As a zechus so that all of these women find their zivug, Yad L’Achim has arranged the special Tu B’Shvat shidduch initiative.

Talmidei Chachamim, representatives of Yad L’Achim will be davening in 4 Mekomos Hakedoshim on tu B’Shvat.

- In Amuka at the resting place of the tanna Yonasan Ben Uziel - at the kever of the Arizal who writes that tefillah on Tu B’Shvat is a segulah for shidduchim - at the kever of Baba Sali, Rav Yisrael Abuchatzeira - and in Meron by Reb Shimon Bar Yochai! on Thursday, Jan 25th, Tu B’Shvat.

The Talmidei Chachamim, will daven for each and every person who submits their names for tefillah to Yad L’Achim for shidduchim, parnassah, refuah sheleima, children, and all personal requests. As usual, there is no set donation to submit your names for tefillah. We will daven FOR YOU, we will bring a Kvittel with YOUR names, and YOUR tefillos.

The question still stands but why does Yad L’Achim do this for any and all in Klal Yisrael, and for FREE? Of course , tzedakah is appreciated to help us in our vital work of Pidyon Shvuyim.

We also think about: What about someone who is suffering with being single, or health issues?

They need their rescuing. If we can help by submitting YOUR name’s for tefillah to the talmidei chachamim, it is our zechus! May it bring shidduchim and yeshuos to all who we help.

Therefore, there is never any minimum donation required to submit names for tefillah.

Imagine the hum of davening and kedusha in that shul. The malachim carrying prayers directly up to the holy throne…

The Chasam Sofer writes that shuls that shun idle chatter will be rebuilt during the times of Moshiach.

Ensure that your shul is right there at the forefront by joining the No Talking in Shul Contest now!

How it Works:

To join the No Talking in Shul Contest, fill out the form after Shabbos and submit it to contest@lakewoodvibes.com for our $25/ $35 raffle.

1.1. Four winners will be selected each week over the duration of this initiative.

2.2. You must attend all three tefillos to be eligible for the raffle.

3.3. If you didn’t talk during tefillos on Friday night, Shabbos day, and Shabbos afternoon, you are eligible for the $25 prize, all ages.

4.4. If you didn’t talk during all three tefillah times and attended leining, you are eligible for the $35 prize.

5.5. A parent’s signature must be affixed to the form.

•Lets Create a•

Mirror You might not pay much attention to the mirrors in your home beyond using them to check your hair or teeth. But if you’re looking at your mirror and thinking it looks a little, well, basic, there’s a fix for that.

Mirrors can be used to make your room feel more spacious, open, and brighter because they reflect and emphasize the artificial or natural light in these spaces. Mirrors can be used as decorations — and, believe it or not, mirrors are not just for indoor use!

We don’t often think about this, but outdoor areas like patios, terraces, and even gardens are basically extensions of our homes, which means they too can be decorated in all sorts of fun and interesting ways.

Here’s a fun and pretty project to make your living space — indoors or out! — more inviting.

You can never have too many mirrors around!

Supplies: For this craft you’ll probably have to pay a visit to your local craft store. But the results are worth it!

• Round board • Mirror • Imitation leather in any color you like • Scissors • Glue or hot glue gun • Pencil • Round item for tracing circles (e.g., roll of Scotch tape, cup, etc.)

• String for hanging the mirror

Step #1 Cut out a big circle from the imitation leather. You need it to be big enough to cover your board. This will ser ve as the background. Once you’ve cut it out, glue it onto your board.

Step #2 Glue down the mirror in the center of the leather-covered board.

Step #3 Using your pencil and the round stencil you chose (tape roll, cup, etc.), trace lots of circles on the imitation leather. How many circles you need will depend on how big your mirror is, so you might need to make more circles once you start designing the mirror if you see you didn’t make enough. When you’re done tracing circles, cut them all out. This takes time, so put on a great shiur or some awesome music. You can even talk on the phone as you do this par t, as it’s just a lot of repetition that doesn’t take much concentration.

Step #4 Lay out the circles in three rows surrounding the mirror. Once you have them all positioned, you’ll see if you need to make any more circles. If you see you need more, now is the time to make them.

Step #5 Now that you have all your circles in rows covering the space surrounding the mirror, you need to make a cut in each circle. Take each circle and make a small slice on one edge, stopping at the middle of the circle. Make sure not to cut past the middle.

Step #6 Working with one circle at a time, pinch together the cut, and glue the pinches together. You now have what looks like a flower blossom.

Step #7 Take three of the pinched and glued circles, and glue them to each other in a column. When you’re done, you should have a lot of columns of three circles.

Step #8 Now glue one column at a time to the board surrounding the mirror. Continue to glue down columns of circles until your entire mirror is surrounded. Press down on the pinched part as you glue each column down. It won’t hurt the pinched part — it just helps to flat ten it out in a prett y way and makes the glue have something better to adhere to.

Step #9 Glue a few strings together in the shape of a loop on the back of the board. You need a few strings, as this is a heavy project.

You can glue a piece of cut leather over both ends of the string to hide the edges. Use this loop to hang your beautiful new mirror!

The Cape Buffalo lives on the fields and in the forests of many African countries. Although their diet consists solely of grass they can reach the massive weight of 2,000 lbs and a length of over 11 feet!

They are very dangerous, very wild, and easily angered, especially to protect their offspring. They can effortlessly kill people, and even lions, with their long, sharp and curved horns.

They are of the three deadliest animals in Africa, claiming the lives of over 200 people annually.

The only animal that fights with them is the king - the lion. But the buffalos expertly defend themselves and fight back. The most dramatic scenes take place when these two foes clash.

Most often the lions will wait in ambush, however seldom they will sit for hours poised against each other.

The buffalo will position himself with his head down - his sharp horns directly opposite the lion (2 pictures top left) and wait.

The lion will seek his prey, sometimes trying its luck with a baby, a frail one, or infirm. If the buffalo remains rooted in place the lion won’t prevail. However, as soon as the buffalos start running chaos ensues and then the lion can easily separate a baby from its mom (picture far bottom) and catch his prey. Sometimes the picture changes: The buffalos start charging and chase away the lions (top right).

The brawls can last for hours and the outcome can never be predicted. But when it’s the lions that triumph they will have a delectable meat meal for the entire family that will keep them satiated for a while.

Since its inception on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan of this year, the Amud HaYomi program has opened nearly 1,000 shiurim the world over attracting more than 100,000 participants! The new daily limud “yomi’ with which Dirshu has gifted Klal Yisrael has taken off in an unprecedented way, literally conquering the hearts and minds of Klal Yisrael - whether it is baalei battim seeking a limud that enables them to gain a kinyan and have a geshmak; whether it is kollel yungeleit seeking a systematic way of being koneh Shas while simultaneously learning it in a non-superficial way; whether it is bachurim¸ yes, thousands of bachurim, who have taken to the limud! There are even a number of yeshivos that actually have so many bochurim learning as part of the program that Dirshu has agreed to make those yeshivos into monthly testing sites, so that the bachurim do not even have to leave yeshiva to take the tests.

The Amud HaYomi will be beginning Masechta Shabbos in less than four weeks, 9 Adar 1/ February 18, and it was about this that Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein and numerous other Gedolei Yisrael with whom Dirshu met have expressed their joy. “Shabbos is a shemirah,” is the message that came through loud and clear.

Not only will the Amud HaYomi begin learning Masechta Shabbos but Dirshu’s other massive program, its Daf HaYomi B’Halacha daily learning program will also embark on hilchos Shabbos, Chelek Gimmel of the Mishnah Berurah in a few months’ time. Thus, not only will lomdim be able to learn Masechta Shabbos with the Amud HaYomi, but at the very same time as they are deeply immersed in the sugyos of hilchos Shabbos they will also be able to learn the halacha l’maaseh of Shabbos with the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program.

Leading Gedolei Yisrael including HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau, shlita, have urged the learning of hilchos Shabbos as a shemirah in response to the war that has been raging since Simchas Torah. Currently, anyone participating in Dirshu’s two flagship programs, has the opportunity to not only achieve a kinyan in Masechta Shabbos and hilchos Shabbos but also to bring rachamei shomayim upon Klal Yisrael who needs it so much during these trying times.

Twin Powers: Shabbos and Achdus When hanhalas Dirshu met with the Vizhnitzer Rebbe, shlita in his home in Bnei Brak, Dirshu’s Rabbi Shlomo Rozenstein asked the Rebbe, “In what area should we seek to be mechazek ourselves in light of the current matzav?”

“Shabbos is the mekor habracha,” the Rebbe responded, “The Torah was given on

Shabbos. Likras Shabbos lechu v’neilcha, when we come and meet Shabbos by engaging in learning about Shabbos and learning the halachos of Shabbos, we tap into the source of our bracha and that endows Klal Yisrael with a special shemirah.”

The Rebbe then turned his focus to Rav Hofstedter and highlighted another important ideal that brings Hashem’s shemirah on Klal Yisrael, the ideal of achdus, of bringing so much unity among Klal Yisrael.

He said, “Dirshu has the zechus to bring tens of thousands of Yidden together in learning the Torah hakedosha. They are coming likras Shabbos, to greet the Shabbos by learning the Gemara and halachos of Shabbos. Embarking on this with so many Yidden together is a tremendous manifestation of achdus. Certainly, the twin powers of achdus and Shabbos contain within them the most important ingredients needed by Klal Yisrael to prevail in these difficult times!” concluded the Vizhnitzer Rebbe.

Siyum On Masechta Brachos In Vienna History was made just over one-hundred years ago when the Daf Hayomi was established by Rav Meir Shapiro at the First Kenessia Gedolah in 1923 in Vienna. Now, history will once again be made on February 19 when the first Siyum of the Amud Hayomi cycle will be held in the same hall in Vienna on Mesechta Brochos. The Siyum in the Sofiensäle Hall will I”YH be graced by many Gedolim from across the world, commemorating this historical event.

HaGaon HaRav Chizkiyahu Mishkovsky, shlita, venerated Mashgiach of Yeshiva Orchos Torah and a talmid muvhak of HaGaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, delineated the remarkable, unprecedented success of the new Dirshu Amud HaYomi program as it is poised to conclude Masechta Brachos and embark on Masechta Shabbos.

He asked a question. “Why was Yehuda chosen

by Yaakov Avinu to go to Mitzrayim before the other brothers to establish a yeshiva in Goshen?

We know that shevet Yissochor was a shevet of Gedolei Torah. Why couldn’t Yissochor establish the yeshiva?”

He answered in the name of the Nesivos Shalom of Slonim, that after a yeshiva has already been established, you can find many people who can give shiurim and help keep the yeshiva running properly.

However, when it comes to starting a yeshiva, building a foundation for a new makom Torah, you need a ‘gur aryeh,’ a lion like Yehuda, a revolutionary leader who has the power, initiative and tenacity to make sure it happens in the best way possible. This pshat came to mind when I was thinking about the new, revolutionary Amud HaYomi program that Rav Hofstedter and Dirshu have gifted to Klal Yisrael,” Rav Mishkovsky continued.

“Just think when Rav Meir Shapiro established the Daf HaYomi, it was an extremely ambitious project. The program would not have caught on and become a Klal Yisrael limud without the support of the Gedolei Yisrael of that time, especially the support of the Imrei Emes of Ger. In this case, we have seen this program become a Klal Yisrael program in a matter of weeks or a few months!” Rav Mishkovsky exclaimed. “We see baalei battim who have so identified with the program because it allows for time to have a geshmak in learning. We see kollel yungeleit grabbing onto the program because it affords them a plan to learn Shas at a pace that they can understand and retain the knowledge. We see bachurim who have found such newfound energy in learning as a result of the program’s having caught on and even becoming an official seder in some yeshivos. Without a doubt this program is a tremendous zechus for Klal Yisrael!”

Perhaps Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein best encapsulated the Torah’s view on this by saying, “Everyone in Klal Yisrael must be involved in the battle for Eretz Yisrael. Torah is akin to our atom bomb. It is the ultimate shemirah for Klal Yisrael and when Yidden embark on learning Masechta Shabbos and hilchos Shabbos with diligence and complete focus, there is no better shemirah for all of Klal Yisrael!”

INGREDIENTS 1 Tbsp Coconut Oil 1/2 cup Maple Syrup 1/2 cup All Natural Peanut Butter 2 1/2 cups Brown Rice Crisps Cereal

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Grease a loaf pan with coconut oil or line with parchment paper (use a larger baking dish if serving size is adjusted higher).

2. In a medium pot over low-medium heat, whisk together maple syrup and peanut butter until thoroughly combined. Remove from heat and let cool, about 5 minutes.

3. Add rice crisps and gently mix with a spatula until evenly coated.
