ears ago, I attended a dinner where one of the speakers espoused the importance of inculcating good values in our children from a very young age. “When you see a pretty flower,” the speaker suggested, “remind your children that it’s from Hashem. Tell them that instead of creating a boring world of black and white, Hashem created a world of beautiful colors and shapes for us to enjoy.”

for Hashem’s manifest beauty in our world by simply reading about them. It’s one article you definitely wouldn’t want to miss. The Taz on the Orach Chaim (siman 277) states that a person will have to give a din v’cheshbon for the beautiful things in this world that he saw and didn’t take pleasure in.

The rest of the speeches that I heard at that dinner have long since faded from my memory, but that line somehow stuck with me — and I’ve used it often with my children. Because, indeed, Hashem has created a beautiful world for His creations. And an awareness of that fact fosters a sense of connection with Him. The natural world is so full of riches and beauty that it’s almost impossible to contemplate its colors, shapes, textures, and smells without thinking of our Creator.

The Klausenberger Rebbe explains that the source for this Taz is the command that Adam Harishon was given: “…Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat. But of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat of it…” (Bereishis 2:16–17).

Indeed, reading this week’s feature on strange and unusual fruit reminded me of that speech from way back when. To many people, Tu B’Shevat is the birthday of the trees, and we celebrate the day by partaking of the shivas haminim and perhaps some esrog jelly too (see Vibes of Greatness for a story about an esrog). And that’s the essence of this day — a day when the halachic new year for trees begins, and the countdown for orlah starts. But by expanding our knowledge base to include information about more fruits — and exotic fruits at that — we stand to gain a deeper appreciation for Hashem’s world and His beautiful creations. Many of the fruits mentioned in the Vibes of Interest article are not available in local fruits stores, but one can gain such appreciation

We’re meant to enjoy that which weare permitted to enjoy…

Before Hashem gave Adam the command not to eat from the Eitz HaDa’as, He commanded him to eat freely of all the rest of the trees in Gan Eden. Meaning, before Adam was told what not to do, he was told, as a mitzvas aseh, what he should do. And that mitzvas aseh was for him to take pleasure in Hashem’s world. Tu B’Shevat is a day to rectify Adam’s sin of eating from the Eitz HaDa’as. By taking pleasure in the permissible and beautiful items in Hashem’s world, we are able to do just that. From the shivas haminim to exotic fruits to the “standard” apples and oranges, this Tu B’Shevat let’s take a moment to think about the Creator of our perfect and beautiful world.

BESHAL ACH Vayeishev Bitachon in All Circumstances In this week’s parashah, after Bnei Yisrael left Mitzrayim, they encamped at the shores of the Yam Suf. The Egyptians were pursuing them, and they cried out to Moshe. Moshe turned to Hashem in tefillah. Hashem replied, “Why do you cry out to me? Speak to Bnei Yisrael and let them travel!” (Shemos 14:15). The mefarshim question this response. What should a Jew do in a time of distress if not daven to Hashem? In fact, leaving Mitzrayim itself is attributed to the heartfelt cries of Bnei Yisrael, so why shouldn’t they have davened at the Yam Suf as well? The Nesivos Shalom explains that there are times when tefillah alone isn’t enough to bring about salvation. There’s another power that no prosecution can stand up to, and that is bitachon. When a Yid trusts that Hashem will have mercy on him as a father has for his son despite the severity of the circumstance, that trust protects him throughout any situation. He brings a mashal from the Midrash Shocher Tov on the pasuk “Hashem, in you I have trusted” (Tehillim 25:2). There was a man who arrived at the capital city of the king and fell asleep on the king’s grounds. The guards wanted to beat him. The man exclaimed, “Don’t hurt me. I’m part of the king’s household.” The next morning, the guards brought him before the king to determine if he was telling the truth. The king didn’t recognize the man and demanded, “Why did you claim to be a member of my household?” The man replied, “I trusted in your generosity that if I would say I belong to you, you would have compassion.” The king was pacified and decreed, “Because he trusted in me, let him be.” There are two levels of trust. The first level is when one trusts and doesn’t have to take any action. This is what happened in Mitzrayim. The second level of trust requires an action. This is what happened to the Jews at the Yam Suf. The Yidden needed a miracle above nature — and that required action. This is what Hashem meant when He told Moshe not to daven. The Nesivos Shalom concludes that there are three types of belief: belief in the brain, in the heart, and in the limbs. Leaving Mitzrayim tapped into the belief of the intellect and the heart, but to finish the redemption, the miracle of Krias Yam Suf required physical action. When Nachshon jumped into the water and proceeded deeper until it reached his neck, he showed belief with his limbs, and that was the ultimate trust that brought about the miracle. It’s interesting to note that the women of that generation also had this level of trust, and their actions manifested this. The pasuk tells us that Miriam led the women of her generation in praise after Krias Yam Suf with the accompaniment of tambourines and dances (Shemos 15:20–21). Rashi questions how the women had these instruments on them. Where did they get them from? He answers that the righteous women of the generation were so certain that the Holy One would perform miracles for them that they took their tambourines with them when they left Mitzrayim. The following story, told by Rabbi Yechiel Spero in his book One Small Spark, touched me in a deep way because it portrays the levels that one can achieve when they truly trust in HaKadosh Baruch Hu. In the 1830s, Rav Yosef Zundel Salant, a talmid of Rav Chaim of Volozhin and the rebbe of Rav Yisrael Salanter, moved to Yerushalyim and became a rav there. One of his special qualities was his outstanding bitachon in Hashem.

him. There was a problem, though. He looked disheveled, and his level of learning seemed to match his appearance. Nonetheless, Rav Zundel brought the young man home, and Tzivia, seeing his gentleness and kind middos, surprisingly agreed to marry him. Although the town was in an uproar that the rav’s daughter would be marrying such a simpleton, Rav Zundel didn’t pay attention to them. Nosson Nota earned a reputation as an honest water carrier who spent his free time in the beis midrash. One day, when the talmidei chachamim were discussing a sugya, Nosson Nota jumped up and remarked, “What you are discussing is something my grandfather, the Shaagas Aryeh, spoke about.” He then launched into a long, brilliant explanation. Rav Shmuel, the eldest son-in-law, ran to Rav Zundel to share the good news. Not only was this new member of their family a talmid chacham, he also descended from illustrious stock. Rav Zundel barely reacted to the news. It was as if he had been expecting it all along. He had taken action based on his trust — and Hashem had fulfilled the rest. One might think that this level of trust is applicable only to special people who have worked on themselves — and not to an average Yid. However, I have seen otherwise. I’m privileged to be part of a group of growing women who have taught me that we can all attempt to reach high levels of trust in Hashem. One of the women sent me a picture of a tambourine she’d painted with which she hopes to greet Mashiach. In fact, she informed me, as of a few weeks ago there was such a demand for tambourines that there were none to be found in Yerushalayim! A different friend in this group went shopping for her “Mashiach dress,” the dress she has designated to wear when Mashiach arrives. We can all strive for great levels in emunah and bitachon. We learn this from the following pasuk at the end of Parashas HaMahn, when Hashem commands Moshe to put away an omer of mahn for safekeeping: “So that they will see the food with I which fed you in the Midbar when I took you out of Mitzrayim” (Shemos 16:32-33). The Meshech Chochmah explains that Hashem gave us the mahn immediately after we left Mitzrayim, before we’d even received the Torah, to emphasize that anyone who strengthens himself in trusting Hashem, no matter his level of Torah learning, will receive support and sustenance from Him. This theme fits beautifully with Tu B’Shevat, which generally falls out during the week of Parashas Beshalach. The custom is to eat fruits of the tree on Tu B’Shevat, to teach and encourage us to trust in Hashem. The Divrei Shlomo explains that Tu B’Shevat is at the peak of the winter, when the trees are empty and dry and have no signs of life. When we eat fruits at this time, we arouse hope and trust that they will once again flower, blossom, and produce fruits.

Man is compared to a tree, as the pasuk states, “The tree of the field is a man” (Devarim 20:19). Just as a tree withers, dries up, and then regenerates, a person who drifts from the Torah should hope and trust that Hashem will give him the strength to return and elevate himself. No matter who one is or what they have accomplished, they can connect and grow in their relationship with HaKadosh Baruch Hu.

Just as he arrived, a ship docked, and Rav Zundel searched the disembarking passengers for a potential chasan for his daughter. Rav Yitzchak Zev HaLevi Soloveitchik The Brisker Rav (October 19, 1886–October 11, 1959)

Shira Yael Klein Rav Shlomo Lorincz was one of the early chareidi members of the Israeli Knesset. As such, he interacted regularly with the gedolei hador, including the Brisker Rav. The Brisker Rav was machmir to get an esrog from the forests of Morrocco, because they carried no suspicions of being grafted. But on erev Sukkos 1958, the Brisker Rav’s precious Moroccan esrog was confiscated by customs in Lod Airport (now known as Ben Gurion Airport). The Brisker Rav begged Rav Lorincz to do whatever he could to release the esrog before yom tov.

Sukkos was almost over. But, nonetheless, Rav Lorincz began searching for the minister of agriculture, Mr. Kaddish Luz from Kibbutz Degania.

As Rav Lorincz was busy running from one official to the next, he was also updating the Brisker Rav (through a middleman, because the Brisker Rav did not have a phone in his house). Each time Rav Lorincz called, the Brisker Rav requested that he leave no stone unturned because he saw it as a question of the actual fulfilment of the mitzvah.

Rav Lorincz came to the Brisker Rav, terrified to break the news to him. To his surprise, the Brisker Rav looked and him with a smile and said, “Nu, Rav Shlomo. So there’s no esrog?”

The Brisker Rav told him about a poor elderly couple from the village of Rogabe. They had scrimped and saved all their lives to be able to buy an esrog. But it still wasn’t enough. So they sold their home, and with that money they bought a beautiful esrog. All the Jews of Rogabe came to see it. They passed it from one to another, marveling at its beaty. Suddenly, the esrog slipped and fell. The pitom broke. It was no longer kosher.

Time was running out, and yom tov was fast approaching. The officials were sympathetic and respectful of Rav Lorincz, but no one had the authority to release the esrog. Rav Lorincz concluded that the only person who could do so was the chief administrator of the airport himself. But he could not be located.

The Brisker Rav was heartbroken. His face displayed his deep pain and anguish. Finally, he said, “Please do whatever you can to at least get me the esrog for Chol HaMoed.”

Rav Lorincz sent someone to the airport to get the precious esrog. But by the time he got there, the office with the esrog was already closed and locked.

“There’s no esrog,” Rav Lorincz replied sadly. “But why is the Rav smiling?”

Rav Lorincz personally went to the airport and spoke to one official after another.

It was getting late, and one by one the customs offices began to close. When it was clear that there was no way to release the esrog before yom tov, Rav Lorincz went to the Brisker Rav’s home in Yerushalayim to give him the bad news.

The old lady was afraid to tell her husband what had happened. But when the old man heard the news, he stood up and said, “If you don’t have an esrog, you’re patur. And the same One who said to take an esrog also said not to get angry.”

He called the central office of the kibbutz and was told that Mr. Luz had just been hospitalized in Hadassah Ein Karem. Rav Lorincz headed straight for the hospital. He talked his way past the doctor to Mr. Luz. “I would be honored to release the Brisker Rav’s esrog,” replied Mr. Luz, “but I don’t have my official stationary with me. My instructions aren’t valid unless they’re written on my stationary.” Rav Lorincz had the Ministry of Agriculture

The Brisker Rav turned to Rav Lorincz and explained, “As long as I thought there was a chance of getting the esrog, I was troubled and pained by the situation. But now it’s over. I’m sure that you did whatever you could. If there’s no esrog, there’s no reason to continue being upset.” Rav Lorincz told this story to his family every Sukkos so that they’d learn that when there’s nothing more to be done, one must learn to return to life as usual. Chapter 21 RECAP: The Felds arrive home at one in the morning just as Xavier Roberts pulls into his own driveway. Nachman accuses his neighbor of following him, but Xavier shoots down the accusation in a scar y tone and goes into his house. A couple minutes later, Nachman and Debbie both receive a text message displaying a picture of Avi and a message that he’s okay. They’re lef t wondering who sent the message and what it could mean. The following morning, we were all up early. I called in sick at work. There was no way on earth that I was going in to work that day. All three of us checked our phones for updates, but there were none. I also checked Xavier’s house, but his car was gone, so I presumed he was out for the day. It filled me with relief and worry in equal measures. Had he gone to finish his job with Avi? Or gone to visit him? Maybe I should have been smarter and followed him, the way he had followed me the night before — or I thought he had. He’d denied it, but then, of course, he would. Maybe following him would have led me to where Avi was being held. “We’re calling the police,” Debbie said over a very somber breakfast. Rikki just moved food around her plate and ate nothing. Even knowing that wasn’t unusual for teenage girls, she exceeded the norm. Debbie and I ate a grand total of a cracker and cheese between us — and didn’t even finish that much. “Mum,” Rikki said firmly, “you remember when we had that burglary last year? And we called the police? What happened? Did they send a top detective and a forensic man to dust for fingerprints and to take DNA from that bottle of water the burglar had helpfully left behind?” “No,” Debbie admitted. “Right,” Rikki agreed. “They sent around a policeman who looked about twelve years old, and probably was. He wrote things down in a notebook, took the bottle of water, and two days later we got an official-looking letter saying that due to lack of evidence, they had closed the case.

“Lack of evidence? The burglar had swigged from a plastic drinking bottle and left it on the kitchen counter! DNA and fingerprints, for heaven’s sake. We were practically handing them the case on a plate, and they did diddly-squat! I think that even if we’d had the burglar himself tied up and presented him to them with a blue ribbon round his neck, we’d have gotten that letter saying they were closing the case due to lack of evidence. Pah!” she finished with a sound of disgust. “So you’re saying the police are useless,” I said thickly. Nothing was making much sense this morning. We needed Avi; he was the brains of the family. Oh, wait, he was the reason for all of this. “No, all she’s saying is that the police aren’t interested in burglaries,” Debbie said firmly. “This is not a burglary. It’s a real crime, and they should be interested in this.” “Well, don’t we have something to do on our own first?” Rikki said. “That missing piece of footage from the bowling alley. Wasn’t Jamie meant to get his cousin Kenny to try and undelete it? Or something?” I swelled with pride. My daughter was just so smart. She was also the brains of the family, not just Avi. We, the parents, had produced two geniuses. And we had totally forgotten about Kenny, but she had remembered. “Yes, of course, but Jamie said Kenny is in year eleven at school, so he can only come in this afternoon,” Debbie said. Scratch that about the parents having totally forgotten about Kenny. It was just

me. Not Debbie. Three geniuses. One village fool. “I’m going to call Jamie all the same,” Debbie said. “Maybe he can expedite things.” So she dialed the number he’d given her the previous night. He was at work in the bowling alley, but answered the phone anyway. Yes, he remembered about the CCTV, but no, he couldn’t hurry things along because Kenny was still a schoolboy; nothing had changed there since last night. He had already spoken to his cousin, and Kenny would cycle over to the alley immediately after school. That was the best he could offer. “That’s great,” Debbie told him. “What time will that be?” “Around four thirty, give or take,” Jamie said. “It’ll take him time to get here.” “Can we not pick him up?” Debbie asked. “Save him the time?” And us too, was the unspoken thought. There was a pause. “Look,” Jamie said, sounding guarded, “I know you’re desperate to find out what’s happened to your son, and I get that, I really do. But honestly? From what I know of Kenny, he’d freak if total strangers turned up at his school to take him in their car.” “You’re right, of course you are,” Debbie said apologetically. “I hadn’t thought of it from his point of view. So look, we’ll be there around four thirty.” “Fine,” Jamie said, and the call ended there.

“The police are rubbish,” Debbie said. “Waste of time contacting them. I don’t know what this country is coming to.” Rikki gave an I-told-you-so look, while I just looked on disbelievingly. “Avi would never just go off on a jaunt,” Debbie stated firmly. “I agree,” I said, “but it’s not me you have to convince. It’s him on the other end of that phone.” “Maybe there’s someone techie,” Rikki said, “who can unlock the message, even if it’s from a burner phone.” She got up and made for the stairs. “Where you going?” I asked. “Where does it look like I’m going, Dad? Upstairs. To my computer. To do some searching.” “Don’t be too long,” I said. “We have to be at Finchley Bowling at four thirty.” She paused on the stairs and looked at her watch, then at me. “Dad, it’s twenty past ten. I think we’ll just about make it.” And she disappeared up the rest of the stairs. Debbie and I looked at each other. “Well, I have some housework to do,” Debbie said finally. “I don’t feel like doing anything. It’s a weird, horrible feeling not knowing what’s happening with your own child. But I need to do some laundry and clean up a bit before Chandrika comes tomorrow.”

“Mum,” Rikki said with a few expressive eye rolls. Debbie held up her hands. “Okay, okay! So I went a bit overboard.” “A bit?” Rikki repeated, with another couple of eye rolls for good measure.

Chandrika was our Sri Lankan cleaning lady. Debbie shared with many women the incomprehensible need to clean up before the cleaning help came to…clean up. So Chandrika never saw the house at its worst.

“So,” I said, feeling very much like a third wheel. “Now that that’s sorted, what shall we do with the rest of the morning?” We all looked at our watches. It was barely ten, and we felt like we’d been up for hours. Because we had.

Now, Debbie went up to Avi’s bathroom with a bucket and cleaning cloths to tidy it up after her son’s last visit to the bathroom.

“I’m calling the police, like I said,” Debbie said determinedly. “This isn’t a burglary. It’s a kidnapping — and possibly worse. The police are wonderful about serious crime, even if they’re rubbish at burglaries.”

“Nachman!” Debbie called a moment later. Actually, it was more of a shriek than a call. And it had me bounding up the stairs two at a time. No mean feat for someone as unfit as I am. I found her in the bathroom, holding out what looked like the wrapper from a bar of soap.

“Don’t say that, about it possibly being worse than a kidnapping,” Rikki begged. Debbie looked at her apologetically, then dialed. She put the phone on speaker so we could all listen in. “Look, madam,” the officer on the other end of the phone said once Debbie had poured out her story. “Your son is how old? Twenty-two? And he sent you a message saying he’s okay? He’s a grown man. Why is he even still living at home with Mummy and Daddy? You can’t possibly know he’s been kidnapped. He hasn’t even been missing for twenty-four hours yet. He said he’s okay, didn’t he? Probably off on some jaunt or other. Happy to escape your clutches. Give it twenty-four hours. Then, if you really can’t control your helicopter parenting, file a Misper.” “Misper?” Debbie said blankly. The officer sighed and repeated it in fool’s language. “Misper. Missing Person’s report. Don’t you watch any of the cop shows on TV?” “No. We don’t have a TV,” Debbie said passive-aggressively. “Oh, right. Well, that’s what you do,” he said. “I’m willing to bet he’ll be home before then. Most of them are. Just cutting the apron strings a bit, I’ll wager. Maybe if you didn’t tie them so tight yourself, he wouldn’t need to. Good day, madam.” The call disconnected. Debbie stared at her phone.

“What’s that?” I asked. “It’s the wrapper from a bar of soap,” Debbie said. “But look at it, Nachman.” Dutifully, I looked. Someone had written something on the inside. It was in Avi’s handwriting. And it said: “Don’t worry.” That was all it said. “Why can’t the guy be a bit more expressive?” I ranted. “I pay for him to go to expensive private schools, and he can’t write a simple sentence? Just two words? What’s he trying to tell us?” Rikki had come out of her bedroom after hearing the shriek, and was looking at the wrapper. “Don’t you get it, Dad?” Rikki said. “It’s not what he wrote or didn’t write. It’s the timing of the message.” “Exactly,” Debbie said, waving the wrapper under my nose. “He wrote this before he went bowling. So he must have known he wasn’t going to come home.” To be continued...
