LETTER f rom the EDITOR

S

tatistics for the year 2023 show that about 10 percent of people are in leadership positions and 5 percent are observers. Which means that 85 percent of people are followers. These statistics relate to the workforce, yet they can easily translate to other areas of our lives as well. How often, after all, have we overheard statements such: Oh, I can’t effect any real change out there. What do I possibly have to offer? Our parents passed away a decade ago, but it’s been one big battle over the yerushah ever since, and we siblings simply see no way out. Afternoons at home are utter chaos. But I’m completely used to it by now. I simply use earplugs, smile, and survive. How often have we made such statements? Indeed, the common denominator between these statements is the sense of helplessness they convey. Followers often feel powerless when confronted with challenges. Leaders, however, usually feel driven, empowered, and emboldened under the same circumstances. It was interesting to read a study on the difference between leaders and bosses. Apparently, bosses drive their employees, depend on their authority, invoke fear, use “I” statements, and blame others for breakdowns. Leaders, on the other hand, coach their employees, depend on their goodwill, generate their enthusiasm, use “we” statements, and fix breakdowns. (Study by Anderson, A., 2013) In other words, bosses focus on minutiae and on getting results. Leaders, in contrast, concentrate on the bigger picture and on creating a general sense of harmony, while making the process enjoyable.

1/3/2024

This week’s Parashah Vibes column is about Moshe Rabbeinu and his leadership qualities. It’s also about more recent leaders in our history and the amazing sense of compassion they have displayed. “It would be easy to think that this has nothing to do with any of us,” our columnist posits. And it’s true. It’s all too easy to think that leadership, the act of bearing the greater picture in mind, and exhibiting extraordinary behaviors has nothing to do with us. It’s far easier to lay the blame on those who started the problem (and they did do it!), to take a lackadaisical attitude toward generating change, and to adapt a philosophy of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” And 85 percent of people have adapted such attitudes. But as Jews, we’re used to being different. We’re used to standing out and being singled out. And on the home front, really, every one of us is a leader. No matter what position we have in our workplace (if we even have a work position), we’re all capable of leadership. Parents know this to be true on the home front, and it’s true on a wider-scale level as well. Passivity is for followers. But with so much world scrutiny on us, that’s not a stance we can afford to maintain. Instead, let’s engage in acts of kindness, compassion, and out-ofthe box thinking (read the full Parashah Vibes article for details!) so that each one of us can effect change and be nodded at as a leader.

May it be a week full of change and good tidings,

The Lakewood Vibes Editorial Team 732.930.2500

Parashah Vibes

Leora Gruen

SHEMOS Vayeishev Leadership This week’s parashah describes the beginnings of Moshe Rabbeinu’s life. How did Moshe Rabbeinu merit to become the leader of Bnei Yisrael, the one who brought them out of Mitzrayim, led them through the Midbar for forty years, and gave them the Torah? The Torah reveals the secret of Moshe Rabbeinu’s leadership. The pesukim tell us the following (Shemos 2:11–14): “It happened in those days that Moshe grew up and went out to his brothers and saw their burdens. He saw an Egyptian hitting a Hebrew man… He struck him down and hid him in the sand.” The following day, when Moshe went outside and saw two men (Dasan and Aviram) fighting with each other, he asked them why they were hitting each other. Their response was to challenge Moshe, asking if he planned to kill them just as he had killed the Egyptian the day before. Moshe realized that his deed was known, so he ran away to Midyan. When he arrived in Midyan, the pasuk (2:15–17) describes how Moshe saved Yisro’s daughters from the local shepherds. These anecdotes all reveal a central theme, showing how Moshe cared about his brothers. He had just left the royal palace, where he had been raised in wealth, honor, and peace, shielded from all the harsh decrees Pharaoh had placed on Klal Yisrael. He ventured out to see his brothers’ suffering, to see if there was anything he could do to relieve the situation. When he saw the Egyptian hitting a Jew, a Jew he didn’t even know personally, he cared enough to act. He didn’t remain quiet, give a mere sigh, or shirk responsibility. Rather, he took initiative and courageously attempted to rectify the situation. Rav Chaim Vital in Shaarei Kedushah comments that Moshe merited all the great things he did because he loved Klal Yisrael and was pained by their sorrow. The explanation Rashi gives from the midrash on the pasuk “He saw their burdens” is “He saw into their burdens,” implying that Moshe cared about their difficult circumstances. One who cares enough to try and change a situation even at the danger of his own life is worthy of being a leader. Leadership is not hereditary; no one is born a leader. Every person has the strength and talent necessary to be a leader. Leadership is built from the strength of caring, responsibility, and action. When Rav Shlomo from Bobov built his dynasty in the States, he started with no community at all. One of his chassidim, an orphaned Holocaust survivor who arrived on Ellis Island after the war, related his personal experience of landing in America with absolutely no money or family. The Bobover Rebbe met him and told him, “From today onward we are your parents, and we will take care of all your needs.” Rav Shlomo continued to do this one person at a time, and from these Jews, the Bobov dynasty was built. Rav Shlomo became the address for anyone who needed help. When the Rebbe heard about the multitudes of penniless Jews stranded in Eastern Europe who wanted to immigrate to America, he wanted to help them too. However, he encountered a severe roadblock when the United States government was unwilling to allow refugees to enter if they were unable to provide for themselves. At the time, there was a Jewish senator in office, Senator Blum, who was known as someone who insisted on following the law and therefore was unwilling to help. His response to any request for help was, “I’m helpless. The law forbids allowing in fugitives.” Despite this, the Bobover Rebbe decided to do his best. After great effort, he managed to set up a meeting with Senator Blum in Washington. When

22

he entered the senator’s office, the senator didn’t even acknowledge his presence. After a few long moments, Senator Blum lifted his head and asked, “Who are you?” At that moment, the Rebbe understood that if told the absolute truth, he would be dismissed immediately. He so badly wanted to help the Yidden left in Europe, so he said, “I came here today to tell you that I’m disobeying the law!” That piqued the Senator’s curiosity. “I’m here today,” the Rebbe continued, “from a place where the local law permits sending Jews to Auschwitz, to slave labor, and when they’re no longer able to work, to the crematorium. The law forbids the Jews to run, hide, steal food, or help one another. I broke all these laws, and that’s why I’m standing in front of you today. Now I want to ask you one question. Are you also ready to join me in breaking the law? I know that US law forbids allowing refugees to enter the country. But this law is causing people to perish. It’s a cruel law that begs to be broken,” the Rebbe finished with an anguished cry. When he calmed down, the Bobover Rebbe lifted his eyes and saw Senator Blum watching him. The senator got up from his chair, shook the Rebbe’s hand, and said, “I will join you!” He then worked to issue passports and raise money to allow many Jews to enter America. This miracle happened not because Rav Shlomo was called the Bobover Rebbe but because he was so pained by the plight of his brothers in Europe that he took responsibility and generated leadership. This is how all the Jewish leaders throughout our history were created. From the power of pain and caring, from the power of responsibility and leadership for the klal, they receive their strength. It would be easy to think that this has nothing to do with any of us. The midrash in Shemos Rabbah (2:2) tells the story of Moshe’s beginnings as a shepherd for Yisro in the desert. One of the sheep escaped the flock, and Moshe ran after it. He found it next to a pool of water, drinking. When he reached it, Moshe said, “I didn’t know you were so thirsty. You must be tired as well.” Immediately, he placed the sheep on his shoulders and carried it back. Hashem told him, “You had such compassion for sheep. You are the right one to lead my sheep, Bnei Yisrael.” Rav Mendel MiStritkov wondered how this was a merit for Moshe. He was appointed to watch over all the sheep, and he abandoned the entire flock to find one lone sheep. How did that make him the right one to be entrusted with the plight of the entire nation of Yisrael? Rav Mendel answered that the test was to see if Moshe would understand that a flock includes many individual sheep. In this regard, he succeeded. Moshe understood that sometimes one must also designate time for the individual and allow the others to manage on their own. This is the test of any leader, teacher, or parent. Does he realize that every individual in the group or family is an entire world? Does he understand that each one has its unique personality and needs? Each person requires an individual approach and attention. Every one of us as well has wondrous talents and capabilities. And in whatever capacity we find ourselves, we too can highlight the uniqueness of those in our care and in that way become true leaders. Reb Avrohom Shmuel Binyamin Sofer The Kesav Sofer (1815–1871) Shira Yael Klein The Kesav Sofer was the son and successor of the Chasam Sofer. He inherited the rabbanus of Pressburg (modern-day Bratislava, Slovakia) from his father, as well as the position of rosh yeshivah of the Pressburg Yeshivah. Both the Chasam Sofer and his son the Kesav Sofer were important leaders of Hungarian Jewry. *** Reb Moshe Avrohom Sofer recounted how the shidduch of his father, Reb Eliezer Zusman Sofer, came about. Reb Eliezer (the author of Yalkut Eliezer and Sefer HaMakneh) learned in the Kesav Sofer’s yeshivah. When Reb Eliezer reached marriageable age, his rebbe, the Kesav Sofer, summoned him. “Why aren’t you looking for a shidduch?” he asked. “Everyone here knows me,” Reb Eliezer answered. “Everyone knows that my mother is an almanah and doesn’t have a penny. No one wants to make a shidduch with me.” “Do you think Pressburg is the only place you’ll find a shidduch?” replied the Kesav Sofer. “Rebbe, I don’t have money for traveling expenses.” “I’ll give you money.” The Kesav Sofer handed Reb Eliezer the paltry sum of 97 groschen. “Take these coins for the traveling expenses.” Reb Eliezer had great faith in his 26

1/3/2024

rebbe. He took the coins and went to the train station.

I’m older than you. Nu, answer me. What brings you here?”

“How far can I get with 97 groschen?” he asked.

Reb Eliezer told him the whole story: He was a talmid in the yeshivah of the Kesav Sofer. The Kesav Sofer had asked him why he wasn’t getting married, and Reb Eliezer had told him that no one in Pressburg wanted to make a shidduch with him because everyone knew that his family was poor. The Kesav Sofer had given him 97 groschen for traveling expenses, which he used to buy passage on a ship, and that’s how he’d ended up in this random village.

“You can go to a place next to Pressburg,” he was told. But Reb Eliezer didn’t want to travel to an area on the outskirts of Pressburg. It was too close. He would still be known there, and no one would be interested in making a shidduch with him. He had to get further away from Pressburg, but he only had 97 groschen. So he went to the docks, where there were boats that transported merchandise. He could use his 97 groschen to buy passage on a commercial boat, which would get him a lot farther than if he used the money for train fare. That’s what he did. The 97 groschen from the Kesav Sofer got him to a random village. Not a single Jew lived there. But Reb Eliezer had full faith in his rebbe that somehow he would find his shidduch in this village. Suddenly, he saw a distinguished Jew with a long beard standing in front of him. “What are you doing here?” asked the old man. “What are you doing here?” replied an excited Reb Eliezer. “That’s not polite” said the old man. “I asked you first. And in any case,

The old man gave him a clap on the back. “So you’re mine!” The old man explained, “Last night, I saw my rebbe, the Chasam Sofer, in a dream. The Chasam Sofer told me to travel to this village to find a shidduch for my daughter. You’re the one I was sent to find. Mazal tov! Nice to meet you.” And so it was. That old man was Reb Yoel Ungar, the Av Beis Din of Farkash (author of the Sheilos U’Teshuvos Riva). Reb Eliezer had trusted his rebbe, the Kesav Sofer, and was zocheh for his shidduch to come about in a way that was l’maalah miderech hateva. The Kesav Sofer’s yahrtzeit is Yud Tes Teves. Reb Avrohom Yaakov Friedman The Third Sadigura Rebbe (July 30, 1884–December 24, 1961)

Shira Yael Klein One time, when Reb Avrohom Yaakov was in Switzerland, he was walking in the street with an escort, a chashuv avreich. Suddenly, Reb Avrohom Yaakov tripped and fell. His hand felt injured, but Reb Avrohom Yaakov was a strong and healthy person. So he got back up on his feet and kept walking. When Reb Avrohom Yaakov got home, he saw that his hand was swollen from the injury and the impact of the fall. But he didn’t make a big deal of it. He was sure that the swelling would pass and get better with time. A few days passed. Reb Avrohom Yaakov’s hand didn’t get better. In fact, every day it became more and more swollen. Soon enough, he couldn’t even lift his hand to put on tefillin. At that point he had no choice.

without anesthesia. It simply wasn’t shayach to do the procedure without anesthesia. The doctor again explained the entire procedure from start to finish, and how incredibly painful it would be without anesthesia. When the doctor finished, Reb Avrohom Yaakov replied, “I accept the suffering upon myself. Every person has to accept suffering with love, and that is what I will do.” “Okay,” the doctor replied. “If you really don’t want anesthesia, we won’t force it on you against your will.”

28

The doctor picked up his instruments and began to insert a long needle deep into Reb Avrohom Yaakov’s injured hand, until it reached the bone.

“I don’t want anesthesia,” said Reb Avrohom Yaakov. “I will accept the treatment as it is, come what may.”

Reb Avrohom Yaakov sat and forcibly held his injured hand in place with his other hand so that it wouldn’t move in the slightest, until his fingers turned totally blue.

The doctor was incredulous. He was sure that Reb Avrohom Yaakov didn’t understand how terribly painful the treatment would be

The doctor poked and prodded, and Reb Avrohom Yaakov sat there like a stone. He didn’t move and didn’t make a sound.

1/3/2024

When they got home, Reb Avrohom Yaakov sat down on a chair and turned to his wife. “Please make a cup of tea for this Yid. He just experienced a difficult trauma.”

Reb Avrohom Yaakov had incredible powers of concentration. He was able to completely remove himself from this world and elevate himself to a different world entirely. But at the same time, he could understand the experience of his escort, who had “experienced a trauma.” He made sure that the avreich got the cup of tea and the validation that he needed.

When Reb Avrohom Yaakov and the avreich reached the hospital, they went to the emergency room. After a series of tests and an X-ray, the doctor concluded that a lot of pus had accumulated inside Reb Avrohom Yaakov’s hand, and it needed to be drained. This procedure needed to be done under anesthesia because otherwise it would be terribly painful.

The doctor gave him all the details.

Finally, the doctor finished his work and bandaged Reb Avrohom Yaakov’s hand. Reb Avrohom Yaakov got up and went home, together with the avreich.

The avreich was amazed at Reb Avrohom Yaakov’s incredible middos. “It’s mamash unbelievable! The Rebbe experienced terrible suffering and pain, but the first cup of tea that he requested was for me — because I witnessed his suffering. That was a difficult trauma for me, and I needed a cup of tea!”

After davening, he turned to the avreich. “I would like to go to the hospital to be examined,” Reb Avrohom Yaakov said quietly. “In the meantime, don’t tell anyone about it.”

Reb Avrohom Yaakov asked the doctor for the details of the treatment. “How will it be done? How long will it take?” He wanted to know the entire course of treatment.

The doctor couldn’t believe his eyes. Not only was Reb Avrohom Yaakov not screaming or crying from the pain, it was as if he didn’t feel anything at all. The avreich who was accompanying Reb Avrohom Yaakov was just as shocked.

Reb Avrohom Yaakov could handle whatever suffering came his way. But he didn’t expect others to be similarly stoic. That was Reb Avrohom Yaakov. His entire essence was good middos and giving to others. Reb Avrohom Yaakov of Sadigura’s yahrtzeit is Yud Tes Teves.

Chapter 18

The Guy Next Door Ruthie Pearlman

Chapter 18 RECAP: Jamie Solomon, another worker at the bowling alley, of fers to show the Felds the CCT V footage from the time Avi went missing if they return that night after closing hour.

So we got into my rubbish tin can on wheels that had faithfully driven us around for the best part of ten years without complaint (well, without much complaint anyway), and drove home, having arranged to meet Jamie Solomon at five past midnight.

that girls mature earlier than boys — and this was never more true than when a crowd of boys got together and behaved like wild little kids. At that moment I felt that Rikki was probably more mature than I was, let alone than Avi was.

That was way, way past my bedtime, and Debbie’s too, but as things stood, I didn’t think we would sleep anyway. So instead of lying in bed agonizing over what had happened to Avi, it would be more productive to go back to Finchley Bowling and follow Jamie’s morethan-slightly-dodgy plan.

“Did they describe the man he went off with — besides that he was big?” Debbie asked her.

But first we had to face Rikki. We hadn’t allowed her to join us, and we hadn’t been in touch with her; it was all too crazy, and we just didn’t know what to say to her. Rikki preempted us not being in touch. She called us when we were on the way home. We had the phone on speaker so both of us could hear what she was saying and could respond. We filled her in on everything that had happened and our planned midnight excursion back to Finchley Bowling. “Did you have any luck yourself, darling?” Debbie asked her guiltily. “I managed to get hold of the friends Avi went bowling with,” Rikki said, “and they more or less confirmed what this…whatshisname? Jamie Solomon? Told you. They saw him leave with a big guy, a very big guy, but they thought it was okay. It wasn’t as if he was dragged off, they said. Now they realize how unwise they were, and they feel terrible. But at the time…well, they were just a crowd of kids and it was a game of bowling and it looked kind of okay, so they didn’t even question it.” I thought about questioning her use of the word “kids” to describe Avi’s friends who were all older than she was. But then I remembered

32

1/3/2024

“Bald. That was about it.” “Xavier Roberts?” I said before I could stop myself. “I don’t know, Daddy. Xavier isn’t that big. Well, yes, maybe he is. I don’t know. I don’t KNOW!!” Her voice rose in utter despair. “It’s okay, sweetheart,” I said soothingly. “We’ll go back and look at the CCTV and we’ll soon know.” “Or not, as the case may be,” Debbie said, putting a damper on my soothing reassurances. “I’m coming with you tonight,” Rikki said, and it wasn’t a question, it was an order. “It’s going to be very late. Are you sure?” This ridiculous comment was, as usual, from me. There was a short silence on the other end of the phone, just long enough to tell me that she was on holiday, unlike her parents, and she could get up late tomorrow if she wanted to. “Okay, I get the picture,” I said. “You’re coming.” “Yes, Dad,” Rikki said. “I’m coming.” I drew up outside our house, and we went inside. Our mood was somber. Rikki met us at the door and told us she’d made us all a hot drink and something to eat. “It could be a long night,” she said, bringing the food and drink over to the kitchen table. The food consisted of leftovers from supper.

Chapter 18

“I thought we’d also take a thermos of tea and some biscuits or something to tide us over.” Rikki, although as slender as a pencil, was of the school of thought that a couple of hours spent without access to kosher food and drink could lead to imminent malnutrition. I’m a bit like that too, but I’m a man. It’s normal for a man, especially one who doesn’t have a clue how to turn on the stove, let alone cook anything on it, to get a bit anxious if he isn’t sure who’s providing his next meal. Avi’s a bit like that too. Seems to run in our family, being food obsessed. Debbie’s the only one who isn’t, which was obvious enough; she did the cooking. “Can you cook?” I asked Rikki. It was such an out-of-left-field question that Rikki stopped what she was doing and stared at me, thinking, no doubt, that I must have lost my marbles. “Dad, you know I can’t cook. What’s up with you anyway?” “Nothing. Don’t mind me. Having a senior moment, that’s all.” “A senior moment, Dad? You’re only forty-four. Hardly sliding into senility yet.” I shrugged and refused to get drawn into a long discussion about why I’d asked her if she could cook. I wasn’t quite sure of the reason myself, anyway.

The clock watchers started pouring out of the building at midnight plus ten seconds. Well, some of them could have been customers; I wasn’t being fair. At precisely four minutes past midnight, this lanky teenager came out, his walk more of a swagger, but that was probably just his gait rather than an indication of an arrogant mindset. He saw my car at once and came over. Peering in, he looked questioningly at Rikki. “My daughter, Avi’s sister,” I explained, as if explanations were necessary. Jamie nodded briefly. “Give it five more minutes and then come in,” he instructed me. “I’ll be waiting just inside the main doors. I said I’d lock up tonight. It’s all digitally done. I just have to press in a code. I said I had some stuff to do before I left, so my boss entrusted me to lock up.” “Thank you so much,” Debbie said gratefully. “I know you’re putting your job at risk.”

I sat down with what was left of my little family, to eat and drink in preparation for our incursion tonight. I was thinking of Avi and what he would do if the family genes got the better of him, and he got panic-stricken about food wherever he was, wherever he’d been taken.

Jamie shrugged. “No one will know. And I can wipe the history off the CCTV after we’ve looked at it. I doubt anyone will wonder why.”

It wasn’t a pleasant train of thought, so I forced myself to think of something else. I had to believe they would feed him. The alternative didn’t bear thinking about. I had to believe they needed him alive, for whatever their purpose with him was, and there was no point in starving him to death. I had to believe that.

We sat in the car, glancing at our watches and at the car’s clock on the dash. Never had two minutes seemed so long, but eventually, after about an hour, it passed, and it was time for us to go in. The parking lot was silent by this time; we were the only car in it. It was eerie. But Jamie was there, beckoning us in. We all went inside, and he shut the doors.

“After this is all over,” Debbie said suddenly to Rikki, “I’ll teach you how to cook. You’ll be thinking about shidduchim soon, getting married. You’ll need to know.” Rikki looked at her mother. “I’ll learn to cook when I’m engaged. I’m only eighteen. Plenty of time. Anyway, I plan to marry someone who’s a budding chef. Then I won’t have to. Now can we please stop talking about my lack of cooking skills and concentrate on finding my brother? Honestly, I don’t know what’s got into the pair of you tonight!” We finished our meal, not talking very much after that, each one of us lost in our own thoughts. We cleared up, while Rikki prepared our “emergency rations.” I could see her visibly relaxing once she knew she wouldn’t starve to death in the next few hours out of the house. Debbie looked at her watch. “We’d better get going,” she said. “Better be there a bit early than late, or Jamie will think we’ve bailed.” We piled into my tin can, and Rikki made sure the food and drink was easily accessible so we wouldn’t die of starvation trying to reach it in the trunk. I locked up the house, and we started our drive to Finchley Bowling. And our mission to find our son. We were silent in the car, each lost in his or her own thoughts. My thoughts were: Would Jamie remember that he’d agreed to meet us there? What if, after all this, he’d just forgotten and gone home to bed? He was a teenager, after all, and I knew teenagers well enough to know this wasn’t an impossible scenario.

34

I don’t know what the females were thinking about. But anyway, we got there just before midnight, so it wasn’t fair of me to worry when I didn’t see him at once. He’d said his shift finished at midnight, hadn’t he? But being me, I panicked and thought that was it, he was bailing.

1/3/2024

“Thank you,” Debbie said again. “No big deal,” Jamie said. He glanced at his watch. “I’ll go back in now. You meet me in about two minutes.”

“The CCTV is here. I’ll get the right part up for you,” he said. “Are you sure there’s no one here?” Debbie asked nervously. “I’d hate for you to get caught and fired because of us.” “My boss has left, and he’s always the last one to go,” Jamie reassured her, already sitting at the computer and working the keyboard and mouse like a pro. “The cleaning team comes in at one in the morning. So we have just under an hour.” He clicked the mouse. “Ah, here we are, this is the timeline of when your son was…” He paused. “That’s weird.” “What?” we all asked in unison. “There’s a chunk missing from the footage. Come, look.” We all went round his side of the desk and tried to appear knowledgeable as we peered at the screen. At least I did. The women probably were actually knowledgeable. “Look, here are the boys. Is that one your son?” He pointed at a crowd of boys. There was Avi, standing out in his white shirt and black trousers, tzitzis flying as he bowled. He looked so happy and relaxed. It broke my heart. “Yes, that’s him; that’s Avi!” Rikki said excitedly. “But…” “Yeah, exactly,” Jamie said. “But. The next bit all the boys are there, but not Avi. And the timeline doesn’t fit. It’s five minutes later. Someone has deleted five minutes out of the footage. The exact five minutes where the guy came in and then left with your son.” To be continued…

STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS Rifka Schoenfeld

S AY GO O D BY E TO PA I N F U L LY S H Y: TH E RATIO N AL E FO R S H I D D U CH COACH I N G Lately, Yocheved has been waking up at night worrying about Shevi. Shevi is now going for her degree in speech therapy. Yocheved knows that Shevi has always been an A student and that she will succeed in all academic areas. She is already doing great work with stroke victims as they attempt to gain back their speech. Shevi’s teachers report to Yocheved that all of the people she works with immediately take to Shevi, pushing themselves to work harder because they want to impress her. So, why does Shevi have so much trouble going on dates? At first, Yocheved thought that Shevi was simply going on dates with the wrong boys. Boys who couldn’t understand how special her daughter is, but as date after date ends in rejection, Yocheved has begun to worry that there is something more to the problem. However, conversations with Shevi typically end in frustration and anger. Shevi always cuts the conversation short with one of a few short phrases: “Mommy, I told you. I don’t want to talk about it.” “I know what the shadchan said. I can’t hear that I just didn’t seem “right” again.” “No, there is really nothing to discuss. I know, you think I am perfect and that if I would only try harder to show who I am, I would wow any boy. But, that does not seem to be working.” “Mommy, please, please don’t make me talk about it. It’s too painful.” Because shadchans continued to set Shevi up with eligible boys, Yocheved chose to ignore the problems she knew existed under the surface, but last week, she found a poem Shevi had scribbled onto the back of her notebook. Endless disappointment Endless shame Just can’t figure out how to Show how I am Somehow it seems That the harder I try The worse I feel When they say goodbye Ringing phones Knocks on doors Hiding, disappearing I can’t take it anymore Tears filled Yocheved’s eyes as she thought about the pain that Shevi experienced every time she was rejected by another boy. Why did Shevi have such a hard time meeting her dates when she was so wonderful with new clients?

Dating is Torture While Shevi might feel confident as a speech therapist, her lack of self-esteem when it comes to dating leads to disastrous results. She freezes up and her mind goes blank because of social anxiety. For people with social anxiety, their condition inhibits them from doing little more than responding to questions in barely audible monosyllables, never meeting the other person’s

eyes. Girls, like Shevi, with these deficits come away from almost every date feeling deflated, dispirited, and ashamed. Repeated experiences of this sort shatter self-esteem, giving rise to feelings of being unwanted, unworthy and out-of-sync with society. As Shevi’s poem intimates, the ringing phone of the shadchan only makes it worse.

Raising your Social Intelligence Many people believe that practice and a positive role model will solve all social issues, but what they do not understand is that sometimes people simply lack “social intelligence” when it comes to finding favor with others. Often girls who are short of social skills find dating to be excruciatingly painful. They miss social cues and have difficulty connecting with a new acquaintance. Research has shown, however, that social skills training along with shidduch coaching can help girls like Shevi overcome their discomfort and fear in new social situations. One of the main goals of social skills training is work on self-esteem. Because Shevi has been rejected so many times, she no longer believes that she can go on a successful date. In addition, she begins to think that there is “something wrong” with her. Social skills training and shidduch coaching are not a miracle cure, but with consistent training and practice, people like Shevi can gain confidence and poise.

Nonverbal communication One of the first skills that we work on is non-verbal communication. We continuously give messages to others through without words. For instance, when someone is telling you unfortunate news, they might look down to avoid seeing you in pain. Alternatively, if you enter a new situation and stand with your arms crossed across your body, you are signaling your discomfort, indicating that you feel you need to protect yourself. Eye Contact Perhaps the most important way that we communicate without words is through eye contact. When someone is speaking and you are glancing at your water glass, your hands, or your plate, you are intimating that you are not interested in what they are saying. When I work with young men and women, one of the first skills we work on is eye contact. We conduct regular conversations and then analyze their facial expressions. Were they looking at me when I was speaking? Did they appear interested? Where was their gaze focused when they were speaking? Here are some tips for successful eye contact: •Start small. If you are not comfortable looking directly in the eyes, focus on the areas around the eyes. •Don’t stare. Eye contact is important, but do not stare directly into your date’s eyes with no interruption. This can often be interpreted as combative and threatening. •Respond to eye contact with eye contact. Because of the intimacy and openness conveyed with eye contact, shy people often have trouble not

only giving it, but being on the receiving end of it. If someone is looking in your eyes, respond positively by returning their gaze. Body Language Aside from eye contact, there are many subtle messages that people send through non-verbal communication: •Avoid restlessness: Restlessness can be tapping your foot incessantly, moving around silverware, or checking your watch multiple times. Restlessness indicates that you are not interested in what the person in front of you is saying. Therefore, when Racheli fiddled with her napkin, the young man with her might have thought that he was boring her and consequently might have stopped talking. •Steer clear of closed-in body posture: Crossing your arms, turning your body on an angle away from the person you are speaking to, or leaning away from the table are all signals that you are not comfortable in the situation. Instead, face the other person directly and keep your posture relaxed and at ease. •Don’t people-watch: Instead of watching everybody else in the lobby of the hotel, stay focused on the person you are there with. Aside from leading to lashon hara, people-watching is distracting and again indicates a lack of interest in your date. •Smile: While smiling seems like a no-brainer when trying to communicate in a positive way, many people forget to smile when they are nervous and in new situations. Ironically, research in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that smiling can actually make you less anxious. When you use the muscles in your face to smile, those muscles trigger hormones in your brain that make you more relaxed and happy.

Verbal Communication I have worked with several young men and women like Shevi who are charming and intelligent in regular circumstance, but who cannot seem to get past a first date when set up. There are several ways to combat the anxiety associated with meeting a new person for the first time. Many people think that the ability to make conversation is something people are born with. In reality, though it is not always easy, you can learn how to be more comfortable when meeting new people. Dr. Donna Sollie and Dr. Jean Pearson Scott of Texas Tech University, in an article entitled, “Teaching Communication Skills” explain that it is possible to coach people to better connect with others. The key to knowing where to start is to understand the four levels of communication. First, there is small talk. Small talk it the safest place to start when you meet someone for the first time. You can talk about surface issues such as current events, weather, and your surrounding. The purpose of small talk is to determine the “comfort zone” between you and the other person. The next level is fact disclosure. Fact disclosure is like small talk, except that you are revealing small details about yourself. Refrain from sharing overly emotional details at this point, such as problems at home, work, or school. Once you reveal facts to one another, if you feel that you have things in common, the next step of communication is sharing viewpoints and opinions. This stage allows you to build a rapport through becoming slightly vulnerable when talking to the person about more intimate topics. Such topics might include politics or religion. Make sure you do not use this as an opportunity to be negative about other people because that will simply paint you in a damaging light. The last level of communication is sharing personal feelings. After building trust, finding commonalities, and sharing viewpoints, you may feel comfortable sharing your genuine feelings. At this point, you are forming an emotional bond with the other person by creating an environment of em-

pathy and compassion. Like Shevi, a lot of people have trouble getting past small talk and fact disclosure. This is natural and should not be alarming. However, before heading out for a date, Shevi should consider what viewpoints and opinions she might be willing to share if they come up. Then, discussing them will not be as stressful or intimidating if those topics arise on her date. Of course, sharing personal feelings might not be comfortable when meeting someone for the first time. In that case, save those personal feelings for future dates.

Teaching Empathy – Responding Appropriately to Others Perhaps one of the most important social skills that people can learn is empathy. Empathy means being able to put yourself into someone else’s shoes and recognize their feelings. This is not the same as sympathy or feeling sorry for someone, rather, empathy is responding in an understanding and caring way to what others are feeling. Gwen Dewar, PhD, suggests multiple ways to foster empathy in adolescents and young adults. First, she argues that people need to know how to regulate their own emotions. To that end, in my shidduch coaching, we work on different responses to disappointing or painful situations. Once my client is self-confident enough to respond well to their own disappoints, we work on their responses to others. Often, this requires explaining the hot-cold empathy gap. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to appreciate the power of a food craving when you aren’t hungry? This is what researchers call the “hot-cold empathy gap,” and it appears to be a universal problem. When people are feeling cool and collected, they underestimate how compelling emotionally or physiologically “hot” states—like hunger—can be. Conversely, people in the grip of “hot” states often underestimate how much their current perceptions are influenced by their situation. The hotcold empathy gap leads to mistakes in judgment and failures of empathy. But once we understand how the hot-cold empathy gap works, we can use it to teach empathy. Understanding the hot-cold empathy gap can help Shevi comprehend how her actions might influence her date. Recognizing that if she does not respond positively to certain questions, she could potentially embarrass him. Gaining empathy for other people’s emotions will allow Shevi to react appropriately during future shidduchim.

Transforming Shame Into Success Over the course of several months of shidduch-coaching, Shevi grew as a person and began to believe in herself. She gained confidence and no longer dreaded hearing that the shadchan had called to set up another date. After a while, both Shevi and I believed that she had rid herself of social anxiety and could happily and successfully meet new young men. A few months later, Shevi sent me a wedding invitation with a new poem clipped to it: Endless fulfillment Endless pride Finally figured out how to Show how I can be a bride! Thanks for teaching me how to display my true colors! – Shevi Needless to say, when Shevi walked down the aisle, there were very few dry eyes in the audience.

Chapter 18

The Junior Diplomats

Recap: At the Israeli embassy, Rachel and Eli discover that their father is no longer working as a diplomat — instead, he’s working for security. Rachel shows Eli her notebook where she’s been keeping record of suspicions she has, and Eli is surprised at how much she seems to know.

There were another three entries in the notebook. Eli continued reading.

September 10 Eli’s becoming friendly with our neighbor Jake. I’m glad because Jake looks like a smart guy — even if he’s not exactly Eli’s type. I became friendly with Jake’s sister, Lillian, ages ago, but that makes more sense, since we’re very similar. Anyway, Lillian told me that Eli came to visit Jake when he was sick, and she overheard them say something about listening devices. Did Eli find

That made me really scared. I told Lillian we need to keep an eye on those people, and she told me that she’s seen them before. If that was the case, then the bad guys had the answers. But could the Katzes obtain the answers from them? Eli began to pace again. “The answer,” he said, “is probably in that building across the street from ours. You say that the bad guys live

and she had lots of good ideas to share. “Maybe they needed extra security workers because of that convention, and Abba offered to take on the job?” Brother and sister looked at each other. Reams of questions hung between them. “Maybe,” Rachel said at long last. “But why did he have to offer to take on such a job with the whole family, when he could have just come here for a week or two before the convention after we moved back to Israel like we were planning?” Eli’s mind began to spin. Rachel had a point, and he couldn’t help but

The security agent walked several paces closer to the embassy before speaking into his mouthpiece. “I’ve been keeping tabs on them as you requested,” he said. “And?” The sound of typing and mouse-clicking was louder than the one-word response. “And they seem to have some dangerous ideas. I suggest you, as their father, keep tabs on them.” “Will do. Thank you for offering this information.”

ideas at times — but he’d never acted on them without express parental permission. He could only hope that the pair he was watching would act wisely. Otherwise, they might find themselves in some dangerously hot water.

Maybe Abba had made a suspicious, hi-tech discovery that had necessitated the family’s relocation to Vienna. And maybe the bad guys knew about his discovery.

benefits and versatile applications. Taking a bath in Epsom salt dissolved in warm water can be wonderfully therapeutic. Here are some ways you can benefit from Epsom salt baths: Relaxation and stress relief: One of the most well-known benefits of Epsom salt is its ability to promote relaxation and alleviate stress. When dissolved in warm water, the magnesium in Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin, helping to ease muscle tension and soothe the nervous system. Adding a cup of Epsom salt to your bath can turn it into a calming spa-like experience.

Skin care and exfoliation: The coarse texture of Epsom salt provides natural exfoliation for the skin. Try mixing it with a bit of olive oil or your favorite moisturizer to create a gentle scrub that removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling soft and refreshed. This exfoliating property also makes it beneficial for treating rough patches on the knees, elbows, and feet. My family had just moved from Eretz yisrael. We were on the thruway traveling from the Catskills to Lakewood to get settled in our new town. We realized that we needed gas. What we didn't realize was just how empty the tank was. All of a sudden, the car stalled! We had no cell phone so we couldn't reach anyone! It was also boiling hot! A non jewish person stopped to give us his cell phone. My father called my grandmother and she called Chaveirim. Boruch Hashem she was not far behind us. A half hour later my grandmother pulled up behind us. We were all so hot in the car since the air conditioning also stopped working. We were so terrified, scared and lost on the side of a speeding highway. We were waiting so long for Chaveirim to come but they weren't coming. To our great disbelief, a Yid pulls up next to us! He pulls out a bottle of gas. He filled us up! Suddenly, we heard sirens and the police arrived. The police officer said that what was done was illegal. Baruch Hashem the Yiddishe guy disappeared just in time so he didn't get into trouble. I saw the major Hashgacha Pratis in the whole story, firstly that the non-jewish person lent us his phone, secondly that my grandmother came just in time to help us and most important that a yid had the gas in his trunk and saw us and was able to get the car going. Thank you Hashem for your kindness!!!!

Congratulations to our winner!

I needed new Shabbos shoes for a long time and one day there was a shoe sale. My mother went to the shoe sale and she got me new shoes. They looked so good for Shabbos ones and for weekday. And right when she came home we noticed that my weekday ones had a hole. Now we know the wonders of Hashem. Thank you Hashem!!

Levi Neumann, 8

We went to a family friends Chanukah party, and played a very exciting game. Nosh, money, and prizes were wrapped in silver foil , and lined through the length of the table. We took a can of tomato sauce, and each of us players had to start rolling the can through the table. If the can landed by the side of a treat, the player got it. So bh I won 3 great gifts. The next day was our schools chanuka party. A hour before we were notified that each girl must bring along any gift that will be given to another girl. So I took one of the gifts, I received yesterday, and took it to the schools party. Bh was mamash just in time that I won these gifts! Since we would not manage to get to a store to buy a gift, Chanukah at night. Each of us can feel miracles and see happiness when we choose to! All in our views! Thanks to the Lakewood vibes, for making us aware to appreciate our daily miracles straight from hashem!

Vibes of Craft

B.N. Spetner

- MAKE YOUR OWN -

TISSUE BOX I'm always looking out for you, my dear crafters! Whenever I see inexpensive, easily accessible materials, my mind goes into overdrive as I try to think of ways to put the items to good use — and to create crafts that you’ll have an easy and fun time making. That’s what happened here when I noticed the ridiculous amount of accumulated cardboard boxes in my house. What cheap and practical supplies, I thought, and everything became history after that. With the addition of napkins I’d been wanting to use up for a while (you know when you buy way too many because they’re just so pretty?), this craft was born. The notion of giving some of my boxes beautiful makeovers started to make me feel giddy. I hope this project excites you as much as it excited me. These tissue boxes are really fantastic! *Note: Custom make this craft with paint, napkins, and accessories to match the room you plan on putting it in.

Materials •

Small cardboard box (a shoe box or esrog box works well)

•

Mod Podge

•

Napkins

•

Hot glue gun

•

Accessories like ribbon, shells, jewels, beads (let your mind go wild!)

•

Paint

•

Paintbrush

•

Scissors or craft knife

Vibes of Craft

Step #1 Cut an opening into the box: Using a ruler and a pencil, determine the center of the lid, and draw a rectangle shape. This rectangle will serve as the hole where you’ll pull your tissues out of. Use your craft knife to cut out the rectangle, leaving you with a neat hole in the center of the lid.

Step #2 Paint the box: Paint your box in whatever colors you choose. I painted one of my boxes blue and white because I wanted a beach theme. I wanted a streaky look, so I put the paintbrush first into the blue paint and then into the white, taking care not to mix the two colors. If you want to use more than one coat of paint, allow your box to dry for about thirty minutes in between layers. Touch the box gently to ensure that it’s dry before you apply an additional layer.

Vibes of Craft

Step #3 Apply a napkin: You may not want to use napkins — and that’s fine. But if you do want to add one (and I was very excited to do that with my first box!), then do so by spreading a layer of Mod Podge on the bottom of the box. Next, place your box in the center of the napkin and slowly add more Mod Podge to the sides of your box, pulling up the napkin along those sides and pressing gently as you go. Continue this process all the way up, wrapping excess material around the sides of the box, or trim it away. When you reach the top of the box, tuck the napkin inside. Bear in mind that you’ll need a large amount of Mod Podge to keep the napkin down. Repeat this covering process for the lid, poking a hole in the napkin where you cut out a rectangle in the lid and tucking the napkin into that opening.

Notes: 1.The above technique works with fabric, scrapbook paper, rice paper, wrapping paper, and many other materials. Be as creative as you wish! 2.Use plastic wrap to smooth the napkin down if you don’t want to touch the wet Mod Podge with your fingers. Simply place the plastic wrap over the wet Mod Podge surface and smooth down carefully, doing your best to avoid tearing the napkin.

Step #4 Adjust the napkin: Allow the Mod Podge to dry for twenty minutes and then apply another layer of Mod Podge over the napkin. You may need to add more layers of napkin to touch up some spots. Bear in mind that it’s okay if the napkin crumples slightly as you apply it. This “distressed” look is considered sophisticated and artsy. When you’re finished layering your napkin and adjusting it, allow the box to dry for 30 minutes.

Step #5 Add detail: Add the accessories of your choice to the outside of the box, using a hot glue gun. I applied crafting (a.k.a. costume) jewelry to my napkin-decorated box, and seashells to my beach-themed box. When you finish decorating your box, apply another layer of Mod Podge and allow the box to dry.

Enjoy your homemade tissue box!

I hired a contractor to convert the garage of my Jackson Colonial, but first I showed the plans to Rivky. We completely revised them, redrawing the mudroom to clear up space and limit kitchen thru-traffic.

My move was scheduled for Aseres Yemei Teshuva, and I work full time. But what should have been an enormous stress at a hectic time was a pleasure: I came home from work to a completely unpacked, organized house.

I was living in my house and simultaneously doing construction - It was a war zone. I then listened to the phone course and, magically, my house turned functional! I was so enthralled, I decided to train and help others.

The Shelf by Shelf laundry system is a game-changer. It is no longer daunting! I always thought each kid needed 9 outfits, and now I see less stuff equals less stress. I am loving this minimilist-like lifestyle.

I was on a 10-month salary and very concerned how I would manage in the summer. The SBS budget program helped me map out a monthly plan that was simple, clear and enabled me to save up. I felt empowered and calm.

You asked. So we delivered! Introducing our immensely popular

FastTrack Home Organizing!

With FastTrack, the Shelf by Shelf team works round-the-clock to complete your entire house in a matter of days. You get the complete, lifetransforming Shelf by Shelf makeoover in a fraction of the time. Call for details and scheduling.

Today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Nacham Josephs, founding president and CEO of Universal Cabinet Design, a kitchen cabinet design, build, and supply company serving Lakewood and beyond for over 27 years.

Hi, Mr. Josephs. Let’s jump right in. It seems like at the top of everyone’s wish list is a kitchen that caters to their specific needs and dream. Tell us a little about how you meet those needs. Our company takes the new homeowner — or the builder, for that matter — from the first phase of kitchen design all the way through to the completion of their perfect kitchen. We do this by providing customized service that deals with the very specific needs that come along with kosher kitchens.

Sounds like a very involved process. How does it work? Designing and creating a custom kosher kitchen is a detailed and intricate process — but that’s what makes it so exciting! Our team thrives on problem-solving and streamlining the entire experience, ensuring customer satisfaction. First, we start by understanding the specific requirements of our clients, including their aesthetic preferences and a bit about their overall lifestyle. Do they like to cook and entertain? Are they a large family or a young couple just starting out? Once we understand the needs, budget, and preferences, we then assess the existing space to plan a layout. Our team of designers works closely with clients to select the right materials, finishes, and cabinetry that align with their particular likes and dislikes, and, of course, their functional needs. Once the design is finalized, we move on to the installation phase, meeting with the installation team and reviewing every detail of the plan together to ensure that every element is set in place. It’s a collaborative effort, and our goal is to make the process as smooth as possible for our clients.

targeted functional upgrades, our financing program provides an affordable way to achieve your goals. We encourage prospective clients to reach out to us, and our team will be happy to assist you in exploring this new financing opportunity.

Some people have a real sense of design, while many have no idea where to start or how to envision the outcome. How do you walk all your various clients through the design process? We start with a detailed consultation. We get to know the client a bit and really listen to their vision, preferences, and specific requirements. From there, our team of skilled designers creates a customized kitchen plan that takes into account every aspect, from layout and cabinetry to lighting and appliances. We provide 3D renderings and detailed plans to help clients visualize the end result. Once the design is approved, we process the order and move on to the installation phase, where our experienced craftsmen bring the vision to life.

What are some examples of trends you’re currently seeing in our community? I’ll share an interesting story. Recently, a customer of mine from twenty years ago called me out of the blue. She said she really wants to update her kitchen to be more ‘trendy” and with the times, but she has a problem — after all these years, her kitchen is still in perfect condition, so how on earth can she justify a renovation? We introduced her to one of our in-house designers, and poof! Problem solved. But, seriously, to answer your question: An open floor plan with a large island is all the rage now, and when it comes to colors and styles, neutral tones and all-wood combined with contrasting colors, especially for the island, are extremely popular as well.

What are some of the first considerations in assessing the space for a new kitchen?

It sounds like you go out of your way to ensure a smooth process. Is there anything else you offer to help the experience overall?

The actual existing footprint of the current kitchen needs to be considered with care to determine if it’s large enough to accommodate two sinks…and sometimes three. How about two ranges and two dishwashers? Can a more open plan be worked into the existing space to accommodate an island? If not, can any walls be taken down to enlarge the existing area? You’d be surprised at the possibilities we uncover when studying a floor plan…

Absolutely. We recognize that fitting in all the pieces of the puzzle of home design and renovation can be overwhelming, so we strive to make the entire process seamless for our clients. In addition to our kitchen design and renovation services, we also offer contracting services, which means we can manage all aspects of the home renovation project, such as taking walls down, plumbing, electric work, and flooring. This provides the client with a single point of contact for all their needs. Baruch Hashem, we have experienced tremendous positive feedback.

Do you always have to rip out the whole kitchen, or can you work with what’s there? In most cases, it’s not economically preferable to work with a preexisting kitchen and just add or update. In fact, with today’s options, we find it can be surprisingly affordable to start from scratch. That being said, we can do updates to existing kitchens, depending on the client’s needs.

Many homeowners are looking for budget-friendly options when it comes to kitchen renovations. Can you share how Universal Cabinet Design addresses this need? Certainly. We understand that budget considerations are important for many of our clients. That’s why we’re excited to introduce a new financing program in partnership with Synchrony Bank. This program offers flexible six- to twelve-month financing options with zero interest, making it easier for our customers to manage the costs of their kitchen renovation project. Whether you’re looking to create a stunning, top-of-the-line kosher kitchen or make

It was great speaking with you! How can a prospective client reach you? Our location has just undergone a major upgrade. As we enter 2024, I’m excited to announce the grand opening of our brand-new state-of-the-art showroom, which is as beautiful as it is inspiring. You can find us at 14 S. Clifton Ave in Lakewood, where you’ll experience a showcase of our latest products from top manufacturers, including our latest addition, Omega Cabinetry. To reach us or schedule a visit to our showroom, please call 732-901-9400, or visit our website at universalcabinetdesign.com. We look forward to welcoming you and assisting you in creating your perfect kitchen.

Coming next week: Your house, your taste. Vibes of Lakewood sits with interior designer Fay Sova.
