LETTER EDITOR from the

With Adar Beis here now, and Purim preparations in full swing (in some houses. You can probably find yourself somewhere in our Purim Personality Quiz if that’s not the case in your house) whose mind isn’t on costumes, liveliness, and an increase in simchah?

At the various shiurim and lectures that I attended this year, one line that was constantly repeated was this: In a year such as this one, with war in Eretz Yisroel, an increase in antisemitism worldwide, and so many Jewish lives lost, how can we truly find happiness? How is it even okay to search for happiness?

Obviously, there are answers to this question and each lecturer shared their own ideas as to how we can find happiness, based on various Torah sources, but the question that I’d like to pose now is a different one.

My question is why look for happiness in the first place? Why is happiness so important, that in Adar we increase our measure of happiness in the world and in Av we decrease it? As Chazal tell us: Mishenichnas Adar marbin besimchah and Mishenichas Av mimatin besimchah. In the month of Adar we increase our joy, and in the month of Av we diminish our joy.

But joy is our baseline. Happiness is our baseline.

Why?

Why is joyfulness so crucial to our existence that it needs to always be there. Even, in smaller measure, in Av.

This isn’t only a Jewish question, by the way. Hundreds of scholarly articles have been written on the subject of happiness and its importance, and it’s clear that people who are happier lead longer, more successful, less stressed lives.

But, as Jews, there’s another factor to the happiness equation. The Torah tells us of the terrible things that will befall the Jews, “Tachas asher lo avadetah Hashem besimchah uvetuv leiv — for not serving Hashem with joy and gladness of heart,” (Devarim 28, 47).

Being joyful is not one of the 613 mitzvos. It’s a prerequisite to fulfilling the 613 mitzvos. Because a joyous person puts his whole being into performing the mitzvos, while a sad person can barely muster the energy to open a siddur.

I once interviewed a woman who had lost her father as a child. One of the main things that she remembered about her father, decades after his passing, was his simchah shel mitzvah. She remembered how excited he’d been before the yomim tovim and how he’d thrown his entire being into the preparations. Doing mitzvos with passion is what ensures their continuity. Fire catches on easily and illuminates our surroundings, and it’s that same way with joy and passion. There is a Chassidic saying that “Simcha poretz geder—joy breaks through boundaries.”

We needn’t be happy despite all that’s befallen us this year. We need to be happy because of it. The only way that we will have the strength and energy to break through the boundaries of galus and to march headlong toward the Geulah is with passion and joy — prerequisites to our mitzvah performance.

As we prepare to fulfill the special mitzvos of Purim this year, let’s make our preparations with simple joyfulness and excitement—and surely we will see only true salvation.

Have a great week!

Never Despair

The Midrash Tanchuma states in the name of Rav Chiah bar Yosef that throughout the seven days of inaugurating the Mishkan, the shivas yemei hamiluyim, Moshe Rabeinu set up and dismantled the Mishkan twice a day. Rav Chanina says that Moshe Rabeinu did this three times a day.

The question arises: Why was it necessary for the Mishkan to be set up and taken apart so many times before it was finally put together permanently?

The Nesivos Shalom answers the question with a deeper explanation of what the Mishkan was meant to accomplish. A person’s purpose and mission in the world can be described with the passuk, “And you shall make me a Mikdash and I will dwell within you,” (Shemos 25:8). The passuk does not say within “it” but rather within “you” in the plural to teach us that it is incumbent upon every single person to make himself a vessel worthy of receiving the Shechinah’s presence.

The Mishkan was divided into three parts: the Kodesh Hakedoshim where the aron and keruvim were; the heichal which housed the menorah, shulchan, and inner mizbeiach; and the azara where the outer mizbeiach stood. So too, a person’s body is divided into three: the brain, the heart, and the rest of the organs. Just as the completion of the Mishkan required the completion of all its parts, so too a person only becomes a complete vessel for Hashem’s Shechinah if he purifies all the parts of his body. This concept also explains the need for the pillars that served as a fence around the Mishkan and its courtyard. These pillars allude to the fences one must erect to serve Hashem. To achieve closeness to Hashem, it is crucial to protect oneself from bad thoughts or influences.

The seven days of erecting and dismantling the Mishkan teach us a lesson about the building of our own sanctuary. Even if a person worked hard and exerted much effort to build his Mishkan, but he then failed and the entire structure fell apart, he should not despair. Rather he should immediately climb up and rebuild. One must not despair even if it seems that all is broken. There is always the opportunity to pull oneself together and start over.

The significance of this being done twice a day is to hint to the morning and evening: times of light and dark. No matter how dark things may seem, when day arrives it will carry light.

According to Rav Chanina, who teaches that the construction and dismantling took place three times a day, an additional concept is alluded to. Seven times three equals twenty-one which is the same gematria as Hashem’s name of “E-H-Y-H”, which means being.

When a person says, “I will be…” he is agreeing to the possibility of improvement. Essentially, he is saying that what happened in the past is now over and that he will be a new creation. This concept is greatly encouraging as we strive to improve in our avodas Hashem. Even if we’ve accepted a kabbalah and fallen many times, we must not despair. Instead, we should try again. Even if one feels unworthy of Hashem’s Shechinah resting upon him, he should pull himself together and make himself a vessel to receive blessing. One must know that even if he has fallen, promised to do better, and then fallen again, he is still capable of doing teshuva. And Hashem wants to accept his teshuvah.

A mashal is told of two men walking from Ohio to New York. Man A reached the end of Pennsylvania, but then, frustrated by how long it was taking him

to reach his destination, he turned around and headed back to Ohio. Man B was in middle of Pennsylvania, but he was inching his way toward New York, determined to get there no matter how long it would take.

If we analyze which man is closer to his destination, the answer obviously depends on what our measuring stick is. Distance wise, Man A is closer. However, because he despaired and turned around, he is in fact, much further from his journey’s end.

Another mashal, with a similar lesson, is told of a man who worked tirelessly to build himself an exquisite mansion. He invested in beautiful materials for the outside façade, unique decorations for the inner walls, and custom furnishings. When his mansion was finally finished, he decided to hang a sign outside to advertise his success. Sign in hand, he climbed a tall ladder to reach the top floor, but he suddenly lost his balance, fell off the ladder, and broke his leg. The man began to scream, “My mansion, my mansion! What will be with my mansion?” Bystanders calmed him down by saying: “You fell and need to recuperate. You failed to hang your beautiful sign and need a new sign, but your mansion still remains.”

If we consider everything we’ve accomplished, and our determination to continue despite failure, then we’re on our way toward accomplishing our goal.

Rav Eber, a well-known mechanech in Eretz Yisroel, discusses the idea of teshuvah with the following gemara in Kedushin 49:2: If someone is mekadesh his wife and states that his marriage is dependent upon his being a tzaddik, then even if he is a complete rashah, his kiddushin is still in effect. This is because this person may have had a passing thought of teshuvah while undergoing the kiddushin and that means he is not in the category of a rashah.

Obviously, it’s impossible for a rashah to do complete teshuvah for all his sins in the amount of time it takes to be mekadesh a wife. Still, because of his desire to connect to Hashem, at that moment his teshuvah is considered complete. That simple desire to return to Hashem, even before any change in behavior or asking for atonement takes place, is the main part of teshuvah. This thought is encouraging because Hashem judges us as a tzaddik or rashah based on what our essence is at the present. When we decide to come close to Hashem, at that moment, we can achieve the lofty level of a tzaddik. Of course, we must continue and plan to change. But the steps of remorse and confession, done with a feeling of closeness to Hashem, are extremely meaningful. When we feel remorse and analyze our past behavior, we must do so from a place of connection and closeness to Hakadosh Boruch Hu. This is why, in Shemonei Esrei, we ask Hashem to bring us back to teshuvah before we ask for Him to forgive us. Teshuvah begins with a conscious decision to return to Hashem.

This is the lesson of the Mishkan being dismantled and rebuilt before it was firmly established. No matter how far one has fallen, if a person desires closeness to Hashem, closeness can be achieved

Reb Avraham Dov-Ber Kahana Shapiro

The Devar Avraham (1873 – February 27, 1943)

Reb Avraham Dov-Ber Kahana Shapiro was the last Chief Rabbi of Kovno and the author of Devar Avraham, a threevolume collection of responsa. The Devar Avraham was in Switzerland for health reasons before the war broke out. His son, who was living in the United States, sent him a telegram asking him to join him in the U.S. until the war was over. The Devar Avraham, upon receiving the telegram, showed it to one of his close friends, saying, “The captain is the last to abandon his sinking ship, not the first. At this time of danger, my place is with the people of my city. I am going to Kovno.” He died of illness in the Kovno Ghetto on February 27, 1943.

In the Kovno Ghetto a certain bachur was forced to build an airport in Aleksotas (a part of Kovno), together with about 5,000 other men. The work was hard and draining and the laborers needed to walk ten km (roughly six miles) from the ghetto to the worksite and back every day under starved conditions.

This bachur had almost no food at home save for his scarce allotment of the family’s scant rations and small scraps of food family members somehow managed to get their hands on.

And so, one day this bachur said to his mother, “I am terribly weak and feel like I’m on the verge of collapsing and dying of starvation.”

Tears welled up in his mother’s eyes, but there was nothing she could do. The bachur then continued, “Mama, they give out horse meat to the airport laborers here and it’s been said in the name of the rav that the airport laborers are allowed to eat that meat.”

“I understand,” the bachur’s mother replied, “but without a heter from the Rav, I won’t be able to cook that horse meat for you.”

The bachur made his way to the home of the Rav, the Devar Avraham, and

explained the situation.

“Where did you learn before the war, my dear one?” the Devar Avraham asked.

“I learned for four years in the yeshivah in Vilkomir (modern day Ukmerge) in Lithuania.”

“And what is your last name?” the Devar Avraham continued.

The bachur told him.

“Listen, my dear one,” replied the Devar Avraham. “There are indeed cases where I permitted consuming horse meat. But I didn’t intend this heter to be for bnei aliyah like you. It’s true that you are weak and on the

verge of collapse, and you’re doing harsh physical labor, but I expect more mesiras nefesh from a bachur who learned in Vilkomir and who is from such a chashuv family.

“When Klal Yisrael is in a difficult situation of hester panim like it is now, keeping mitzvos with mesiras nefesh is our only protection. After our 120 we will receive sechar for observing the mitzvos, but here, in Olam Hazeh, we have no zechuyos to help us. Observing the mitzvos with mesiras nefesh pierces the heavens so that Hashem has mercy on us.

“Although you are weak and on the verge of collapse, you can still stand and walk. You are thus obligated to be moser nefesh and not eat the horse meat. Only when you feel that you are truly starving to death must you eat the horse meat immediately, so that you don’t transgress the issur of ‘me’abed atzmo leda’as’ (committing suicide) as nothing comes before pikuach nefesh!”

The bachur, of course, accepted the Devar Avraham’s pesak and the rav’s words had an amazing effect. Food did not become plentiful, of course, but there was no longer a shortage of bread anymore and the bachur and his family no longer needed to live off of food items like potato peels. The bachur recovered from his weakness and lived to tell the tale.

Vibes of Greatness

Reb Yitzchak Horowitz The First Stotsheiner Rebbe (1861 – March 4, 1940)

A certain chassid managed a small lye factory together with three partners.

After World War I, however, this factory no longer brought in enough of a profit for everyone.

And so, this chassid traveled to his rebbe, Reb Yitzchak of Steitshein, to ask for a berachah for parnassah.

Reb Yitzchak listed to this chassid and then said, “When someone gives you a business proposal, tell me about it promptly.”

One day, the chassid heard about a job opening managing a major lye factor.

The chassid did not think the job was worth pursuing as other people would be competing for the position, and the factory owner wasn’t Jewish which meant that as a chassidishe yid he’d be at a seeming disadvantage. Additionally, even if he would somehow get hired, he’d have to forfeit his share of his own factory so that there’d be no conflict of interests. And of that without knowing if he’d even be successful in the new position.

The chassid was inclined to ignore the job offer, but because he was a loyal chassid, and because Reb Yitzchak had instructed him to tell him about any job offers, he traveled back to Reb Yitzchak to discuss the situation with him.

“Nu,” Reb Yitzchak greeted him upon his arrival, “Have you been offered something?”

“Yes,” the chassid responded. “But I don’t think it’s a good idea.” He then explained his reasoning, putting forth a logical argument.

“You should still accept the position,” Reb Yitzchak told him. “Hashem will help you find favor in the eyes of the factory owner, and you will earn a respectable livelihood.”

“But won’t managing the larger lye agency harm my small factory and compete with my partners?” The chassid asked.

Reb Yitzhak reassured him that his new position would not cause his partners any financial damage.

The chassid traveled to Krakow and applied for the new position. About ten other people were vying for the job, Jews and non-Jews alike. The chassid, however, was the only person with a beard and peyos who dressed in a long coat with tzitzis over his shirt. Furthermore, the chassid didn’t know Polish very well.

The applicants waited a long hour for the factory manager to come out of his office, and when he did, he announced that he was giving the chassid the job precisely because he was a frum Jew. The chassid kept this job for about twenty years, until the start of World War II. Reb Yitzchak himself recounted this miracle story. ***

One of the chassid’s duties was to travel between towns and to maintain contact with merchants to take their orders and collect payment.

On one of these rounds the chassid met a Jewish merchant from Beilitz who was wearing a short jacket. They started talking and the merchant, seeing the chassid’s chassidish levush, asked him, “To which chassidus do you belong?”

“I’m a chassid of Reb Yitzchak,” the chassid replied.

To this the merchant said, “You can see for yourself that I’m not a chassid, but let me tell you about a mofes that happened with your rebbe.”

The merchant told the chassid that once, while he was out of an income, he was

offered a job as an agent for a non-Jew. For a long time he and his wife debated the pros and cons of the job offer and could not reach a decision. Finally, the merchant’s wife told him that a rebbe, Reb Yitzchak, had come to their town on vacation.

“Why don’t you go and ask his advice?” the merchant’s wife suggested.

“For what?” the merchant asked. “We already know the pros and cons of the job. What can this Reb Yitzchak tell me that I don’t already know?”

Eventually, however, the merchant decided to listen to his wife, and he went to Reb Yitzchak to consult with him.

“How long have you been debating this job offer with your wife?” the Rebbe asked him.

“A few months,” the merchant answered. “And is the position still available?”

“To the best of my knowledge, it is”’ Reb Yitzchak advised the merchant to apply for the job. He presented himself to the factory owner and to his surprise he got the job on the spot after some negotiation regarding job terms and salary.

Yet another mofes related to work and parnasah…

The Guy Next Door

Ruthie Pearlman

Chapter

26

Recap: Rikki tells her parents that a techie has helped her find an encrypted video clip on the message that Avi sent. The Felds see Avi in the clip, but they can’t hear him.

We watched the clip again. And again.

Then Rikki slowed the clip down until it was almost unwatchable, and we watched it yet again.

We still couldn’t figure out why Avi’s gaze shifted toward the window when he stopped talking. We could see the shadow of someone coming into the room, but we couldn’t see more.

I made Rikki freeze the frame displaying that window. Reflected in the glass was a large, tall figure. A guy wearing a beanie. It was the same guy, I was sure, who had picked Avi up at the bowling alley and taken him away.

Where had he taken him to?

I asked Rikki to advance the video a couple of frames, until the guy in the beanie had moved out of the camera’s shot, and we could actually see out of the window. Rikki advanced the video frame by single frame, as we peered at it closely.

“Freeze!” I said with authority, feeling like a policeman shouting orders at a criminal. Only if that were the case, I’d be holding a gun and telling the criminal to stand still and not to move. It was slightly less aggrandizing to tell a computer to freeze a frame. Did I expect the computer to put up its hands in surrender and to capitulate?

Rikki, the puppeteer in this scenario, froze the frame. Debbie, Rikki, and I looked intently at the window in the frame.

Rikki let out a long, slow breath. “It looks rather like a tube station,” she said at last. “Talk about giving us a landmark to work by. Maybe that’s what Avi was trying to tell us when Beanie guy came into the room.”

“I can’t see which tube station it is, though,” Debbie said. She practically had her nose up against the screen at this point, but that didn’t make things any easier to decipher. “Rikki, is there any way you can move the frame forward, or backward, to see if the tube station name will come into view?”

“I can’t, mum,” Rikki said. “The camera shot is not what’s preventing the name from coming into view; it’s the walls of the room. The window is extremely small. I’ll show you the best frame of the bunch so you can see. We couldn’t even see it was a tube station in most frames.”

Rikki moved the frames back and forth, stopping dutifully at each one, to prove her point. She was right. The one I’d shouted “freeze!” at was the best frame to view the window through.

We looked at the brick surroundings, so typical of London underground stations. But nothing about those surroundings identified it.

Then Debbie shouted out. “Freeze frame! Look! Look over there!”

Rikki froze the frame.

We all looked, and we all saw it. There was a tree standing next to the station opposite the window, and one of its branches was hanging at a strange angle.

The branch looked like it was about to break off. Not quite yet, but soon. And that was a clue. An admittedly pathetic one, but still something to go on.

Debbie was beside herself. “Look! Now we just have to find the station that has a tree with a broken branch next to it!”.

Debbie looked at me and Rikki, and we looked back. We willed her, without words, to listen to what she had just said.

There are 272 underground stations in London. She wanted us to go around to all 272 of them, to look for the one with a tree with a broken branch next to it?

Seriously?

A mother’s love knows no boundaries.

“Debbie,” I said as kindly as I could. I didn’t need to say any more; she knew I was going to talk her out of the idea.

With a sigh, she said, “I know, I know. But maybe we could rally a troop of people to help look? Or maybe we could put that frame out as a jpeg on our local email or WhatsApp groups and ask if anyone recognizes that station? People travel all over London for work, you know.”

I liked her second idea a lot better than her first, as I couldn’t see us rallying together a troop to go looking around the tube stations. Also, we wanted to keep the whole thing low profile and didn’t want the whole community knowing that our son was kidnapped by our nefarious neighbor.

“If we put the photo up on local groups,” I said slowly, “we shouldn’t really tell anyone the reasoning behind it.”

“Dad,” Rikki said, “if we don’t say something about the reason, people are going to think it’s some kind of quiz. As in ‘Do you recognize this tube station with a broken tree outside? Prizes for the correct entries!’ For that to work we’d have to know the answer ourselves and be willing to hand out prizes. Are you ready for that, Dad?”

“I’d be willing to give all my jewelry to the winner, just to get my Avi back.” Debbie said at once.

“What?” I said, affronted. “Even the necklace I got you for your last birthday that you claim to wear all the time?”

Rikki sighed. “Dad, Mum, the point is that we need to give people a vague idea that this isn’t a quiz with prizes, and that we need to know the identity of the station for an important reason connected to family security. We don’t have to give any more details than that.”

I gawped at Rikki, then looked at Debbie. “How did we manage to get such a genius for a daughter?” I asked.

“It’s from my side of the family,” Debbie replied, totally missing the fact that I’d been asking a rhetorical question.

“Okay,” Rikki said, apparently seeing storm clouds

ahead and wanting to dissipate them before they gathered. “We have a workable plan at least. I’ll work on getting the best version of that freeze frame as a jpeg. In the meantime, I don’t really feel like sitting around waiting for answers once we post the pic. What else can we do to stop ourselves from going quietly insane?”

“We could call the police again,” Debbie said. “It’s for sure been more than twenty-four hours now since Avi went missing.”

“Excellent move,” I said.

“Now then,” Debbie said, reaching for her phone. “Avi’s surely a Misper by now.”

“They’ll probably be about as interested now as they were the last time we called,” Rikki said pessimistically. “But we can legitimately push them to investigate now. And maybe they’ll know what tube station is on that pic. They might even have photos of all 272 tube stations, so we can compare and contrast.”

“I highly doubt that,” I said.

“So do I,” Debbie added. “But you never know.”

“Let’s do it then,” Rikki said. “Mum, do you have the number from last time?”

Debbie did, and she called it and went through the whole rigmarole again until she got to the same officer she’d spoken to on the previous occasion. She put her phone on speaker, so we could all listen in at once, without bumping heads.

“Ah he’s still missing,” the officer said.

“We’d hardly be calling you if he wasn’t,” Debbie said acidly.

“I would have hoped you might have called to let us know he’d come home, as I predicted,” the officer said. “So, we can close the file on him.”

“I didn’t even know you’d opened a file in the first place,” Debbie said.

“Well, we have,” the officer said. “Have you heard from him in at all? Any communication whatsoever?”

We told the officer about the hidden video on the text message, how we’d managed to enhance it, and how by freeze-framing it, we could make out a tube station through the window.

A tube station with a tree with a broken branch outside it.

“Really?” The officer sounded as if he was paying attention for once. “Could you send me that video clip ASAP, please?”

“Really?” Rikki said, echoing the officer, as we all exchanged an astonished look. “Now you’re interested?”

“Very,” the officer said, “Here’s my email address. Send the file immediately and mark it as urgent.”

STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS S S

MASTERING ADD: FROM VICTIM TO VICTOR

Most of us find ourselves a little “scattered” at moments. Who hasn’t zoned out during a meeting or while listening to a speech? Or found their attention wandering during conversations with friends or co-workers? Forgetting where we put the car keys or why we dropped by the supermarket are experiences we can all relate to.

For many people, however, absent-mindedness, “scattered” thinking and disorganization are not merely occasional lapses. They are chronic and persistent, to the point of impairing a person’s functioning. When attention deficit is present to this degree, it can indicate the presence of a neurological disorder. Until just recently, the term Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) was virtually unheard of. Remarkably, in less than two decades, it has gone from an obscure medical footnote to a household word.

ADD and ADHD (attention deficit with hyperactivity) are among the most prevalent chronic conditions plaguing school children in the United States, experts say. In a majority of cases, left untreated, the symptoms—and their emotional fallout—continue through adulthood.

What Exactly Is ADD?

ADD is a neurological disorder characterized by inappropriate levels of inattention, over-activity, and impulsivity. Symptoms arise in early childhood but are not always identified correctly.

Signs of inattention include:

•Difficulty following instructions

•Difficulty sustaining attention

•Loses things necessary for tasks

•Poor attention to details

•Disorganized, surrounded by clutter

•Makes careless mistakes

•Appears sluggish/drowsy

•Forgetful

•Chronic daydreaming

•Appears apathetic, unmotivated to complete tasks

•Appears “spacey,” preoccupied

•Appears confused, lost in thought

•Difficulty complying with rules

Signs of hyperactivity and impulsivity include:

•Difficulty awaiting turn

•Interrupts/intrudes

•Blurts out answers

•Difficulty playing quietly

•Difficulty remaining seated

•Excessive writhing, squirming, playing with objects

•Fidgeting

•Excessive talking

Despite a flood of research in recent years, ADD is still not well understood. It is often mistaken for other neurological or behavioral conditions such as bipolar disorder; oppositional defiant disorder; anxiety; learning disabilities or depression. This has led to many children being misdiagnosed, and in some cases, incorrectly medicated.

On the other end of the spectrum, many children struggling with ADD but lacking some of ADD’s more glaring features, such as hyperactivity and impulsivity, have fallen through the cracks at school. Left untreated, they struggle through school, have difficulty making and keeping friends, and enter the workplace at a serious disadvantage.

“If Only My Symptoms Had Been Recognized”

Consider the case of Penina, 22. She was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder just recently, after years of underachievement in school followed by failure at her first nursing job.

Unlike the stereotypical ADD/ADHD child, Penina wasn’t disruptive, fidgety or prone to oppositional behavior or outbursts. She was shy and creative, even showing streaks of brilliance. In first and second grades, she performed extremely well. But by fourth grade, there were clear signs of an attention disorder. She recalls frequent embarrassing moments when she’d be staring out the window during class and a teacher’s sharp inquiry would snap her out of her reverie.

“Earth to Penina—are you with us, Penina?”

She would jerk to attention, face on fire, as classmates snickered. But moments later, she’d be swept away again by her daydreams.

She habitually missed deadlines for reports and failed to complete tests and classwork. She took a spectator role in classroom discussions and usually spent recess drifting about the schoolyard by herself.

Penina’s mother, Brocha, remembers one of the first signs of something more serious than forgetfulness when Penina was in fourth grade. “She wrote two beautiful book reports, each with

a cover that took her hours of painstaking work. But she never turned them in. They were in her knapsack.”

Brocha says that’s when her daughter got her first flunking grade.

When questioned as to why she failed to hand in the reports, Penina said she had no idea where they were. She had searched her bedroom but the room was filled with such clutter, she had despaired of finding them.

“Why didn’t you think of checking your knapsack? Why didn’t you ask for help?” her mother probed in disbelief.

Penina shrugged. The massive mess in her room was an ongoing sore point with her parents. The last thing she wanted was her mother and father sifting through her piles of clothing, shoes, books, papers and miscellaneous junk strewn about the floor.

Brocha remembers that when she had to be out of the house and needed Penina, the eldest of five children, to keep an eye on things at home, she was never secure that her daughter would remember to feed the baby or turn the oven off at a pre-arranged time.

Brocha admits that she and her husband often lost patience with Penina. “I’d come down hard on her for being irresponsible, for not keeping track of her belongings. I was frustrated that I couldn’t depend on her. I tried rewards, incentives. Nothing seemed to make a difference.”

Penina’s teachers consistently gave her low marks for effort. Because she was seen as extremely bright with a reading level that far surpassed the class level, her teachers attributed her failure to finish assignments and participate in class as laziness and lack of motivation.

“All my report cards said the same thing: ‘doesn’t work to potential;’ ‘not motivated;’ needs to apply herself,’ Penina recalled. “After high school, I took up nursing, wanting to make a difference in others’ lives. I dreamed that I’d somehow be able to reverse a lifetime of underachievement. My parents cheered me on. We all had such high hopes. In retrospect, if only someone had picked up on my symptoms, I’d never have gone that route.”

Penina said her experiences as a nurse in the post-operative recovery ward taught her more about herself than she could ever have imagined. The lessons were excruciatingly painful.

“All my attention issues stood out glaringly in this pressure-cooker environment: the tendency to space out, the disorganization, lack of thoroughness … It took me twice as long as anyone else to do routine tasks and the results always seemed to fall short. I’d keep myself awake at night agonizing over my mistakes. My self-confidence was totally shaken.”

“One day, after a serious oversight regarding patient care, my nursing supervisor took me aside. ‘Penina,” she said, ‘We can’t go on like this. I’m concerned about you. No one who is trying as hard as you are trying keeps dropping the ball—unless something is very wrong… Have you ever checked out the possibility that you may have an attention disorder?’

“I was shocked speechless. ‘She thinks I’m not normal!’ I cried in my heart. Despair and humiliation, bottled up over so many years, came spilling out with my tears.

As searing as it was, this confrontation was also a gift. It led to some intense searching for answers… and a major turning point

in my life.”

Early Detection And Intervention

Would earlier detection of Penina’s ADD symptoms have made a significant difference in her life?

The current research indicates so. “The emotional insight and empowerment that comes with early detection of ADD can transform a child’s world,” says Dr. Edward Hallowel, a Harvard-based psychiatrist who treats ADD children and has authored many books on the subject.

Instead of facing a steady barrage of criticism that destroys self-worth, a child whose ADD is detected in the early grades is helped to learn about his special neurological challenges, and to master specific strategies to stay on top of them, he explains. Early intervention “can transform a victim into a victor.”

Ironically, the vast increase in ADD/ADHD diagnoses across the country has given rise to skepticism in some quarters about the disorder. Teachers who try to make parents aware of their child’s attention issues often encounter opposition. They find that some parents brush aside the suggestion that ADD might be present, and are quick to put the onus on the teacher.

The child is “bored,” the parents argues, or lacking stimulation. “He has no problem concentrating at home. Perhaps if you made the lessons more interesting, he would pay better attention.”

This reaction underscores one of the key misconceptions about attention deficit disorder. An ADD child often has no trouble focusing on an activity he or she finds enjoyable. One can find such children engaged in games, crafts or other projects in which they have natural skill or interest.

However, as soon as the subject matter becomes more abstract or requires sustained mental effort, the ADD child typically loses interest. She begins either to fidget and become disruptive, or to “space out.”

Parents who do not see their child in a classroom context obviously have no frame of reference with which to gauge attention issues, hyperactivity or impulsivity. Only when these behaviors are measured against those of his peers, and combined with a parent’s observations of behavior at home, can a valid diagnosis be made—and then only by a professional.

Since there is no blood test, x-ray or sonogram that can identify ADD, a specialist arrives at a diagnosis through skilled interviewing of both the child, parents and teachers, as well as careful observation and weighing of data and anecdotal evidence over a period of time.

Socially Immature

Current research shows that ADD children are often socially immature. Their interactions with others often appear unfriendly, awkward, remote, abrasive, domineering or insensitive. They tend not to be able to read social cues and to be rebuffed by peers for inappropriate behavior.

Social rejection provokes negative behavior that triggers more rejection, which in turn, reinforces the child’s social isolation.

“ADD children may become demoralized, believing they are little more than a nuisance,” notes an article in Eye on Education.

“Feelings of low-self esteem begin to emerge. These children tend to compare themselves unfavorably with their siblings and peers. They may believe that their families are disappointed in them, and begin to feel unloved and unappreciated.”

Although medication has been used for years to improve control over behavior and to stimulate and increase attention, medication does not erase the negative feelings and low-self esteem. It does not reverse ingrained habits and behavior in ADD children that tend to alienate their peers.

Many experts believe that helping ADD children to rebuild self-esteem and to master social skills should precede—or at the very least accompany—the use of medication. Only when ADD kids can truly believe that they are important and worthwhile, and can exercise control over their lives, will they be able to succeed.

Current research shows that up to half of children with ADD will continue to have difficulties with inattention, distractibility, and impulsivity for the rest of their lives. The best way to insure long-term success and compliance with treatment is to get ADD children personally involved in the process early.

ADD Coaching

Many people have found ADD coaching a highly effective and more affordable alternative to counseling. An ADD “coach” works with a child often on her own turf, to analyze what specifically is contributing to her social difficulties, and to generate behavioral strategies to improve social interactions.

ADD coaching also helps children to:

•Understand that the source of many of their challenges is ADD, not personal shortcomings.

•Safely examine areas of failure for clues as to how to implement change.

•Heighten self-awareness and self-observation skills, and use those skills to improve decision-making and performance.

•Change perspective when “stuck” (i.e. learning new ways to work with procrastination, staying on task, or being more productive).

•Become aware of their own learning and processing styles so they can enhance their ability to comprehend information and situations.

Classroom Modifications for ADD and ADHD

The following suggestions may be of help in the classroom for children with ADD.

•Seat students in rows. Having children sit in groups increases distractions for the ADHD child.

•Seat ADD student near teacher’s desk, up front with her back to the rest of the class, but include as part of regular class seating.

•Surround ADD student with “good role models,” preferably students whom the ADD child views favorably. Encourage buddying up during class time, whenever appropriate.

•Do not place the ADD/ADHD student near air conditioners, heaters, high traffic areas, doors or windows. Keep the class -

room door closed. Keep the room free of clutter. Distracting posters, signs, and hanging pictures should relate to the lesson being presented.

•ADD children do not handle change very well so whenever possible, avoid transitions, changes in schedule, physical relocation and disruptions.

Lesson Modifications

•Maintain eye contact with the ADD student during verbal instruction. Make directions clear and concise. Simplify complex directions. Avoid multiple commands.

•All children will benefit from receiving an outline of the day’s lesson on the board prior to beginning the lesson. Use colored chalk to emphasize important words or ideas in the lesson.

•Anything that spices up the lesson such as role-playing, stories, learning games and other activities will help children with ADD focus and pay attention.

•ADD children often benefit from a daily assignment notebook in which they record homework assignments and dates due. Parents sign the notebook daily to signify completion of homework assignments. Parents and teachers can also use the notebook for daily communication.

•Worksheet, workbook, and test layout may need to be modified for children with ADD or visual perceptual problems. It may help to use large type without distracting pictures. Underlining, highlighting, or drawing boxes around parts of the child’s worksheets may also help.

•During tests or quizzes, allow the ADD child to demonstrate mastery of the curriculum by answering oral questions if writing for extended periods of time is too difficult. ADD children may also benefit from being given extra time for certain tasks. The ADD student may work more slowly. Don’t penalize for needed extra time.

Never Too Late

Returning to Penina, ADD coaching helped her to discover the reasons behind years of underachievement and the difficulty she had with organization and time-management. She learned that she needed to avoid stressful and high-pressured environments that magnified her ADD vulnerabilities.

Leaving her job at the hospital was difficult. It made her feel like a failure. But then she joined a home-health agency, and discovered an outlet for talents she never knew she possessed. She found she loved getting to know the patients to whom she was assigned. In the relaxed environment of their homes, she was far more efficient and attentive. She had the opportunity to relate to the people in her care as human beings, not merely names on a hospital chart. Her natural sensitivity and compassion won their hearts and she found herself in great demand.

“I love my job. I feel so lucky to be in a profession that’s helped me to believe in myself,” she said. “I still struggle with time-management, and the paperwork for home-health nursing can be overwhelming for someone who hates detail and tends to procrastinate. But I’ve learned to break down tasks into small chunks. I’m getting better at it all the time. I wish this kind of breakthrough on all ‘ADDers’—hopefully earlier in life!”

The Junior Diplomats

A hand pushing open the accordion-like door of the small closet that Eli and Jake had been pushed into, was the last thing that Eli saw before he, too, drifted off into a dreamless sleep.

Something, or someone, had caused him to fall into that sleep. Eli knew this and that realization accompanied him, subconsciously, throughout his slumber.

It was also the first thought that came to him later, when he finally woke up after what felt like an exceedingly long nap.

But then that thought was taken over by other, more urgent, thoughts.

Where was he?

And who had brought him there?

As Eli’s eyes drew into focus, something began to niggle at his memory.

Hebrew lettering…

Framed certificates…

He was in a room that he’d seen once before.

But when?

And where was the room.

Suddenly, Eli sat up straight in what he now realized was a

makeshift cot.

He was in his father’s office, his hands were free, and that clearly meant that he was safe.

Squeak!

The door to the room was pushed open and Eli rubbed his eyes in delight. “Abba?!”

“And Ima too,” Mr. Katz said. He pushed the door open wider, allowing Eli to catch a glimpse of his mother. “Jake’s father and mother are in the next room.”

Jake. Eli faltered. “Wh… Jake is okay too? We’re safe?”

Eli’s parents nodded. They drew closer to their son, extending their hands toward him one at a time so as to offer him two long, and much needed, hugs.

“We had quite a scare there, Eli,” Mrs. Katz said at last, after drawing back to peer at his son. “But Baruch Hashem, you’re safe and sound now.”

“Baruch Hashem,” Eli repeated. He peered around the room as though hoping to find answers there. “But wh…why did you bring me here to the embassy? Why not home? What happened to the men who kidnapped me?” Eli turned toward the window behind him. “Hey, it’s dark outside. What time is it?”

“Eight o’clock p.m.” Mr. Katz laughed. “That sleeping spray lasted

Recap: Eli and Jake are stuffed into a closet in the apartment that they’re being held in. Workers enter the apartment, and a strange scent fills the air. Jake falls asleep from the scent.

Happy Baby. Happy Mommy.

“Sleepless nights were the usual with my baby’s constant ear infections. Thankfully, the pediatrician recommended Prodermix Infant Powder Probiotics. Since we started, my baby experiences less frequent ear infections, faster recoveries, and we have restful nights once again.”

all day.”

“Sleeping spray?” Eli was suddenly hit by a wave of dizziness. He sat down precariously on the cot he’d just gotten up from. It was the type of cot reserved for last-minute company — an improvised solution that the people at the embassy must have come up with after he’d been brought in, in a deep slumber. “But who sprayed it? I don’t understand.”

“We sent two men dressed as electric company workers to feel out the situation in the apartment you were being held in. Your captors didn’t want to let them in at first, but eventually they gave in — and were knocked out by the spray that the workers diffused.”

“So the gas company workers were good men,” Eli slowly chewed this fact over in his mind. “But what about Jake? I saw him fall asleep near me. Is he okay? How were the workers able to get us out with sleeping spray in the apartment?”

“Jake’s fine,” Mr. Katz said. “And the workers are fine too. They were able to take you out of the apartment because they’d taken an antidote to the spray before spritzing the air with it.”

Mrs. Katz motioned for Eli to get up. “Why don’t you come with Abba and me to the next room now to see Jake?”

Eli jumped up at this suggestion and followed his parents. The next room, which was larger than Mr. Katz’s office, was overflowing with people. But amongst over half a dozen strangers were, Jake, Jake’s parents, little Becky, and Rachel. Eli’s eyes lit up upon seeing all of the familiar, and beloved, faces.

“Jake!” Eli rushed over to his friend and opened his hands wide in what he intended to become a bear hug. “Jake, I’m so happy to see you here.”

Jake blinked and tears glistened on his lashes. A second passed before he allowed himself to be taken into Eli’s embrace.

“Bravo! Bravo!”

Clapping and well-wishes resounded from all over the room. As Eli finally take a step back from Jake, he realized that most of the unfamiliar faces probably belonged to his father’s coworkers who’d clearly played an important part in that day’s rescue mission.

“I’m so happy to see you again,” Rachel said quietly, drawing closer to Eli, her eyes wet from emotion.

Eli blinked and forced himself to talk over the lump that had formed in his throat. “Same here,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll ever ask you to tell Abba and Ima that I might have gone on a dangerous mission again. I’ve definitely learned my lesson here.”

“Baruch matir assurim—Blessed is Hashem, Who frees captives,” an official sounding voice boomed out from the head of the table.

Eli turned toward the voice. “Amen,” he said with feeling. The atmosphere grew serious. “See the two workers with the name tags “Yoav” and “Kobi”?” Rachel asked. “They were in our house earlier. They pretended to put together a plan for your rescue, but in the meantime, the real rescue workers — Uri and Yoni — dressed up as electric workers and came into the apartment to rescue you.”

Mr. Yuval Liram, the officer sitting at the head of the table, was obviously Abba’s boss. Clearly he was the brains behind the entire operation.

“Why don’t you come here now,” Mr. Liram called out to Eli, tapping the empty seat beside him. “We’ve been waiting for this moment all day long.”

Eli warily took the seat reserved for him, but he was pleased when his father pointed out that it probably made more sense for him to wash up and eat first, before he was subjected to a whole litany of official questions.

“Of course,” Mr. Liram agreed.

Feeling like he’d just been dismissed for a brief recess, Eli made his way toward the washing area beyond the conference room.

Jake and Rachel trailed right behind him.

“Our captors are at the Viennese police station being questioned now,” Jake explained quietly. “Uri and Yoni, the pretend workers who rescued us, called up the police to tell them that they’d come into an apartment because there was a gas issue there, but then they’d found some kids asleep in a closet. The police are questioning the men about the suspected kidnapping.”

“The police wanted to take you boys with them,” Rachel added. “But they found Israeli documents on you or something. I think those documents were planted on you by the pretend workers.”

“They couldn’t take us to the police station because of those documents,” Jake said. “So, they called up the Israeli embassy instead, and that’s why we were brought down here for questioning.”

“And the officers here called my parents and your parents down here to identify us,” Eli said, slowly. He was starting to realize that a huge operation had taken place behind the scenes while he’d been in a blessed, worry-free sleep thanks to the sleeping spray. “But I guess all’s well that ends well. Isn’t that so?”

“Well,” Rachel said, clearly choosing her words carefully to avoid scaring her brother. “The men who captured you were taken in for questioning, but Abba said that it seems like they weren’t working on their own. Someone else sent them to capture you and that person is still on the loose.”

This story happened to me when I was in first grade. One day, I went to my mother's room and saw my baby sister on the bed, so I ran to hug her. I was running pretty fast and on the way, I slipped on the carpet and slid right into the bottom of the bed. There was a hard plastic protective piece around the bed and my eye went right into it. My eye was really hurting me and it had a big black bump over it. My mother put ice on it right away to help with the swelling, but it still got very swollen and was almost completely shut. Over the next few days, it turned red and purple and was very ugly looking. It was really not a fun experience but the Hashgacha Pratis was that it happened during Covid when we were all quarantining at home. BH, I did not have to go to school during this whole time and no one had to see me; I would have been very embarrassed. Thank you Hashem!

Congratulations to our winner!

I lost my camera, and on Monday, I was going to a high school play with my friends and really wanted to take videos and pictures. I looked everywhere for it but could not find it. It was getting closer and closer to the play, and I still hadn't found it. After a while, I decided that if I find or not this is what Hashem wats. Then I decided to check one more place, under my pillow. I checked there, and there it was! It really was Hashgacha Pratis that I decided to check one more more place.

It was a hot summer day, the first day of the second half of day camp. Me and my sister waited outside impatiently for the bus to come. After waiting a while, with no bus in sight, we heard from neighbors that it missed our stop. We were so disappointed. My mother quickly got the other kids ready and took us with a car service so we shouldn't come late. Once arriving at school we heard from the other kids on the bus that there was some kind of accident and damage to the bus and we had avoided that by coming later.

The Benefits of Body Dry Brushing Unlocked

Body dry brushing is a wellness practice that involves using a dry brush to gently massage the skin in circular motions. This practice is typically done before showering or bathing. The process entails brushing the skin in the direction of the heart, starting from the feet, and moving upwards towards the chest and arms. Dry brushes are typically made with natural bristles such as boar hair or plant fibers. These brushes help to exfoliate the skin and stimulate circulation without the need for water or additional products.

Benefits of Body Dry Brushing:

1. Exfoliation:

The process removes dead skin cells, revealing smoother, more radiant skin.

2. Improved Circulation:

Dry brushing stimulates blood flow, promoting healthier skin.

3. Lymphatic Drainage:

The process aids in detoxification by encouraging lymphatic flow to the lymph nodes for filtering.

4. Reduced Cellulite:

Over time, dry brushing helps improve the appearance of dimpled skin.

5. Stress Relief:

The process offers a calming, soothing effect on the mind and body.

6. Enhanced Skincare Absorption:

Dry brushing unclogs pores, allowing skincare products to penetrate more effectively.

Incorporating body dry brushing into your routine can lead to healthier, glowing skin and a renewed sense of vitality.

Below Are Tips To Follow for Proper Dry Brushing:

1. Choose a natural-bristle brush.

2. Brushing should be done on dry skin, before showering.

3. Begin at your feet, always brushing towards your heart.

4. Use gentle, upward strokes on legs, arms, and back.

5. Avoid sensitive areas and open wounds.

6. Shower after dry brushing to rinse off dead skin cells.

7. Clean your brush after each use.

8. For best results, aim for 2-3 sessions per week. Dry brushing can be beneficial in so many ways. Try it today to experience its transformative benefits firsthand.

Black-tailed jackrabbit

לזאָהקעשזד לדייוו-עצראָווש

The black-tailed jackrabbit is easily discernible between the many other rabbit species: their huge ears protruding on top of their head stand up straight & tall. They are named for the black stripe on their tails which travels up their back. They are found in the Western United States and Mexico. They were also successfully relocated to other areas.

Their fur is nearly solid grey peppered with black. Their abdomen and parts of their feet are white.

The black-tailed jackrabbit population proliferates rapidly. They can have babies between 2 and 7 times a year! In the range of 1 to 6 children will be born, on average 4-5! They don’t actually prepare a nest, they set up their home in a quiet hidden spot. The newborns are born completely covered in fur with open eyes. Mere minutes after they’re born they are already standing and running around.

Besides for feeding the babies every so often, the mother forges no relationship with her offspring. She will not protect or defend them. (Snakes, raccoons and skunks capture and kill many young rabbits.) At 8 weeks old they are totally independent.

Their long ears serve as a temperature regulator cooling them off or warming them up. The ears contain many blood vessels controlling the blood flow, according to the weather.

They don’t hibernate in the winter, but will manage in every situation and weather.

Inaugural Amud HaYomi Siyum on Masechta Brachos Just One of the Many Highlights at a Dirshu Shabbos Convention Packed with Inspiration

HaGaon HaRav Shimon Galei got up and grabbed the microphone. It was a totally spontaneous moment that left tears of emotion in the eyes of the thousands in attendance. It was in the middle of the Amud HaYomi Siyum at the Armon Hotel in Stamford. Hagaon HaRav Hillel David, shlita, had just finished speaking when suddenly, Rav Galei, grabbed the microphone and exclaimed, “Rabbosai! A siyum masechta is a time when there is a great eis ratzon in shomayim. Now is the time for all of us to daven for Klal Yisrael who are undergoing great difficulty and for all our personal tefillos as well.”

Rav Shimon then began singing, “Shaarei shomayim pesach,” a song where we beg Hashem to open the gates of heaven and shower us with bracha from His infinite otzar, treasure house of bracha. The tangible emotion and feeling of Rav Shimon reverberated throughout the hall and the crowd joined him, raising their voices in song. Soon, everyone was on their feet singing, davening. The emotion reached a crescendo and it was clear to anyone there that they were indeed tapping into a unique eis ratzon. The emotion, the tefillos, the tears that were shed, defy description.

The truth, however, is that this exalted moment at the Amud HaYomi siyum was a microcosm of the eis ratzon that characterized the entire Shabbos Dirshu Convention this year.

The inaugural Amud HaYomi siyum on Masechta Brachos, held on Thursday night in the Armon Hotel’s main ballroom, was a self-contained event that was open to the public, and the public came en masse.

The event began with an important drasha delivered by Rav Hillel David, shlita, Rav of Kehillas Yeshiva Shaarei Torah, Yoshev Rosh of the Vaad Roshei Yeshiva of Torah Umesorah, and a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudas Yisroel.

Rav David brought out the unique qualities of the Amud HaYomi, explaining, “When one learns the amud well and reviews it, it is a different amud. This simcha is not just your personal simcha, it is OUR simcha, a simcha for all of Klal Yisrael!”

do! Let us take some responsibility upon ourselves. Let us here now declare, b’lev shaleim, that we will invest every ounce of our strength, our neshama, our hearts and accept upon ourselves to learn the Amud HaYomi! From Dan to Be’er Sheva, from Monsey to Melbourne, from one end of the world to the other, there should be no place where the Amud HaYomi is not learned with clarity, with chazara. Let us now be mekabel as one man with one heart! In this zechus, may we merit to see that Hashem is King and greet Moshiach!”

Language pales when trying to describe a Dirshu Shabbos. How can physical words encapsulate something so spiritual, so intangible?!

On Shabbos Dirshu, every shevet of Klal Yisrael came together as one - Ashkenazim and Sefardim, bnei Yeshiva and baalei battim, Chassidim and Litvishe bnei Torah - with no boundaries, only unity, achdus forged by the power of Torah, the ultimate unifier of Klal Yisrael. Upon entering the lobby, you were greeted by the sight of a Chassidishe yungerman bedecked with a shtreimel and white socks, discussing a complex Tosafos with a Litvishe yungerman wearing a short jacket and a tie. It was so normal because superficial boundaries do not exist at Mattan Torah where everyone is k’ish echad b’lev echad.

Climactic Melava Malka and Siyum on Masechta

Bava Kama

The Nasi of Dirshu, Rav Dovid Hofstedter, then delivered a seminal drasha. Rav Hofstedter shared a personal childhood recollection. “I was one of the few children of survivors who merited a grandfather who survived. When I was a child, we would go visit my Zeidah on Friday night. He would reminisce about the world of Europe that was no more. He would talk about the suffering during the holocaust and with great pain in his voice, would ask, ‘What did the Yidden in America and Canada do when they were killing six million Yidden?’ In an agonized, heart-aching voice, he would ask, ‘Were they going to the ballgames?’

“As a child, I remember thinking about the suffering of the Yidden during the holocaust and remember feeling sorry for those Yidden who could have done something, and had to live the rest of their lives with the knowledge and pain that perhaps they didn’t do as much as they could have…”

Rav Hofstedter reached the climax of his drasha and passionately asked the audience that was listening with bated breath, “I ask with koved rosh and pain, ‘What are WE doing, when r”l, thousands of our fellow Yidden are being slaughtered and killed?! What are we doing when there are so many fresh widows and orphans, children crying for their parents and parents crying for their children, wives crying over the loss of their husbands and mothers crying over the loss of their children??!’

“There is so much that we CAN

After an entire Shabbos replete with chizuk and simcha, a Dirshu participant related, “I felt so full, so satisfied from all that I had seen and heard. Still, the Gemara says, that even when someone is satisfied from a seudah, there is always room for something sweet and the melava malka and siyum were sweeter than sweet!”

Prior to the explosion of climactic dancing at the end of the melava malka, the assembled had the zechus to hear inspiring messages from the chairman, HaRav Zev Smith, shlita, Hagaon HaRav Dovid Goldberg, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Telshe, Rav Dovid Hofstedter, shlita, Nasi Dirshu and HaRav Nissan Kaplan, shlita. Rav Dovid Hofstedter made an impassioned plea that we rededicate ourselves to Torah with every fiber of our being.

“It is not enough to perfunctorily learn Torah just to be yotzeh. We don’t just do the daf in a short amount of time. A Yid has to have a kesher with Torah, a deep, unbreakable bond with Torah! That is the essence of a Dirshu Yid! It is our responsibility to make a true kesher with Torah, not a blatt here, a blatt there, but to really understand, learn, chazar and retain what we have learned. That is why we are here!”

Rav Nissan Kaplan hailed the Dirshu family for their unique bond with learning and their desire to learn and retain. “But,” he said, “there is still more to be done!”

He called on the lomdei Dirshu to try their utmost to learn without breaks. The quality of the learning and its ability to impact the nefesh is infinitely greater when done with retzufos.

Rav Kaplan also called on lomdei Dirshu to invest special effort in tefillah and chessed. With the power of Torah, tefillah and chessed, our kehillah kedoshah of Dirshu can invoke such rachamim and transform the entire world!

“The Taam of This Shabbos Will Remain!”

Perhaps Rav Moshe Weinberger expressed the feelings of all present when he said during shalosh seudos, “I was introduced as the neilah of the Shabbos, the last speaker of the Shabbos. I beg to differ. I am the afikomen of the Shabbos! Chazal say, we eat the afikomen so that the taam, the taste of matzah should remain in the mouth. The taam of this wonderful Shabbos will remain in our mouths for eternity!”

The diet of the black-tailed jackrabbit consists of all sorts of plants & vegetation, whatever they find: grass, bushes, branches and thorns (see 2 pictures above).

They have many predators stalking them in quest of an easy meal. Counted among those predators are: several eagles (see picture on left), owls, coyotes, bobcats, local dogs and cats, wolves, foxes and the American lion. In some areas scientists observed that black-tailed jackrabbits comprise 45% of the bobcat’s diet!

How do they protect themselves from so many foes? For starters, they will use their sharp sense of sight. Their eyes, situated on both sides of their face, afford them a wide angle view and enable them to be cautious. Secondly, they freeze in position and don’t move. Hashem created them with a color that blends into the surroundings and camouflages them well. Many times they will simply hide behind bushes, and if that’s not an option, they can run very quickly, almost as speedy as galloping horses, reaching 36 mph! They can attain such speed due to their powerful, long, strong legs.

DID YOU KNOW? IMAGINE

Hamentashen teaches the hidden lessons of Purim, just like the delicious filling inside the pastry.

You are playing in your favorite park, enjoying every moment sliding down all the slides and swinging on the swings. Suddenly, while playing hopscotch with your friends, you trip and fall. Ouch! Unfortunately, you have hurt yourself and can no longer play with everyone else. Therefore, you have to sit on the side and watch the others play. Sitting on the side is boring & you start looking around at what else is happening in the park.

Suddenly, you notice a little baby walking outside of the park all by herself! Without hesitation, you call out to her mother and alert her about the situation. The mother runs to pick up her baby and bring her back to the park. Afterwards, the mother comes over and thanks you for your help. She would have been so scared if the baby had gotten lost, and now, thanks to your alertness, the baby is safe. It’s amazing to think that if you weren’t hurt and sitting on the side, you wouldn’t have been able to catch the baby. I guess everything happens for a reason.

DELVING DEEPER

BRING IT HOME

How can the story of Purim and Hamantashen help us remember how to react when things don’t go well?

In the story of Purim, Esther was among the young girls who were taken to the palace. Eventually, she became the queen, but it was not something she had wanted. At first, Esther felt up- set about her situation. However, when a plan to harm the Jews was discovered, Queen Esther found herself in the right place at the right time to help. Thanks to her efforts, all the Jews were saved. When we eat the delicious Purim pastry called Hamantashen, we can remember the story of Purim and remind ourselves that even in difficult situations, there is always some good to be found. We should trust that everything that happens is part of Hashem’s plan & for the good, even if we can’t always see it.

Purim B”H

S’mores Hamentashen

Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix together the eggs, sugar, and oil.

Press the cookie cutter into the dough to make circles and remove excess dough.

Re-pinch the corners of the hamentash to create a seal, place on a cookie sheet & ask an adult to bake for 14-16 minutes, until set, but not hard.

Add baking powder, flour, and cocoa. Mix until dough forms. Cover and chill for 45 minutes.

Place a small spoonful of marshmallow fluff in the center of the circle.

Your Hamentshen are ready! Make a Bracha & enjoy. A Freilechen Purim!

Take a large piece of dough and roll it out using a rolling pin until it is 1/8 inch thick.

To form the hamentash shape, tightly pinch together three corners of the dough to create a triangle. Repeat this process with the remaining dough.

MARKET UPDATE

Bidding wars are back..

Bidding wars are the reality once again for homebuyers in the 500k-800k price range. With interest rates in the 7s, buyers were hoping for less competition. However, the reality is that if you want your offer to be accepted it should probably be about 30k above the asking price. And that’s for places that are not considered hot areas like Howell. Still, even in hot areas, deals can be picked up.

Monday Morning Quarterback

Unfortunately, many buyers are holding out for the next terrific deal. But offering 10k-20k more than you’re comfortable with can be much more effective.

And 10k-20k won’t make that much of a difference on return rates for a 30-year mortgage.

Ask yourself if giving up a house you love so that you won’t have to pay another $60 to $70 a month is really worth it.

Your realtor should guide you to put together an offer to get the house you want. Small fluctuations in pricing won’t matter that much years down the road, but searching for a house for another two years will definitely take its toll on you.

Think Out of the Box

There’s in the box, out of the box, and then there’s veeery out of the box.

Let’s be real. Moving one block past the last family in the neighborhood is not going to go very far in terms of getting you a good deal.

If you need a house and are at a competitive disadvantage, moving somewhere with one to two families can be ideal.

Ask yourself if you know of any areas that didn’t take off. The reality is with such a high demand the odds are strongly in your favor that things will work out.

Your realtor should be able to guide you toward some areas worth looking at.

Location, Convenience, Pricing

While the purchasing prices on homes are an important factor to take into consideration before choosing a location, there are many other factors to keep in mind as well:

Taxes: Some neighboring towns have significantly higher taxes than others. And taxes usually increase on a yearly basis. The price of a house might be right, but you need to confirm that taxes in the area won’t put a strain on you.

Garbage Pickup: Not all townships provide this serve. Although garbage pickup is not a major expense it’s still something to keep in mind.

Bussing: Moving to an area without B.O.E transportation can cost you thousands of dollars a year and be a tremendous inconvenience.

Considering a smaller homer in an area with transportation might make more sense when taking into account overall quality of life.

Rome wasn’t built in a day…

Buying a starter home, even if you see yourself growing out of it, is still a great option.

You will build up equity while living in that home and you can then tap into that equity to extend your home or to move into a larger one.

The time to buy a starter home is as soon as you have money for a down payment and can afford your monthly expenses.

There is no better investment than a home for a family to use to build wealth.

Owning a home comes with a price but the upsides make it worth it!

Stay tuned next month for a town-by-town breakdown.
