his week’s Parashah Vibes made me wonder if there’s a connection between Chanukah and the miracle of children.

Chanukah and miracles, of course, go hand in hand. There’s a famous list of tefillos, attributed to the Kedushas Levi, that tells us which things to ask for next to the Chanukah candles each night.

Davening next to the Chanukah candles after they’ve been lit has incredible strength.

Every tefillah we recite at that time, be it for children or anything else, is especially powerful.

The Kedushas Levi tells us that the third night of Chanukah is a time when tefillos for children are especially mekubal.

It’s a time to daven for good children, happy children, and healthy children.

And for those who don’t have children, it’s likely the right time for them to daven to be blessed.

But there’s more to the connection between Chanukah and children.

The root of the word “Chanukah” — with the letters ches, nun, vov at its root — is the same as that of chinuch. The word chinuch means “inauguration” or “dedication” (the Jews rededicated the Beis HaMikdash after it had been defiled), but it also means “education.”

Chinuch, unlike regular teaching, is about inculcating our values into our children.

“Chanoch l’naar al pi darko… — Train a child according to his way; even when he grows old, he will not turn away from it.”

Chinuch is about making our way — the Torah way — become our children’s way.

It’s about instilling values.

Indeed, the true victory of Chanukah was the victory of Jewish education. Of proving to the Greeks (and to the Hellenists) that the Torah way of life was the correct way. That their goal of trying to cause the Jews to forget Hashem and His Torah would never work.

And, ultimately, it was the Jewish children who fought this battle. They went out into the caves despite the great number of Greek soldiers on the prowl so that they’d be able to study Torah.

They learned about Yiddishkeit despite the inherent danger in doing so. (The origins of the dreidel, as we know, was that it served as a cover-up for the Jewish children’s Torah learning.)

Of course, there’s a connection between Chanukah and children!

Children, and the furtherance of Jewish chinuch, is what Chanukah is all about!

(Of course there’s the fun associations with Chanukah and kids as well. That would be Chanukah gelt, dreidel games, Chanukah gifts, parties, and more).

During these few remaining days of Chanukah, let’s try to remember the true message of the day and tap into what the miracle was all about.

MIKEITZ Vayeishev Zos Chanukah The eighth and final day of Chanukah is called “Zos Chanukah.” This is because of the pasuk in Tehillim that reads: “This was from Hashem; it was wondrous…”

(Tehillim 118:23).

The wondrous eighth day is hinted to with the word “zos,” which means “this.”

Rav Meilich Biderman explains that Zos Chanukah is a holy day that is far beyond our understanding. It is a day designated for miracles. The world runs according to the laws of nature, as represented by the number seven (i.e., the seven days of creation). Eight, which is higher than seven, is above the rules of nature.

Every day of Chanukah represents another praise of HaKadosh Baruch Hu, as mentioned in the berachah of “Yotzer Ohr.” The eighth praise, corresponding to the eighth day of Chanukah, is “Adon hanifla’os — Master of wonders.” It is a day when miracles become natural.

The Sefas Emes writes that Zos Chanukah is like Shemini Atzeres. At the end of seven days of Sukkos, there is an additional day called “Atzeres,” meaning “to stop.”

There is a famous parable for this day about a king who invites his son to visit for a few days. As the visit nears its end, the king implores his son to stay one more day.

So too, at the end of seven days of Sukkos, Hashem requests that we stay one more day for Shemini Atzeres.

We see this same idea within the miracle of Chanukah.

The oil stayed lit for an extra seven days, yet we celebrate for eight days because Hashem wants us to stay with Him one more day. On the eighth day of Chanukah, we have a special opportunity to connect.

day, and Hashem fulfills our hearts’ desires for good.

I heard an explanation in the name of Rav Yisroel MiRuzhin about the well-known story in the Gemara of a gentile who wanted to convert to Judaism. This man came to Shammai and asked him to teach him the entire Torah while he stood on one foot, but Shammai refused. The man then went to Hillel, who said, “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation — go and study it!” (Shabbos 31a).

Rav Yisroel explains the gentile’s question in relation to the holidays. The Hebrew word for foot is “regel,” which is also the Hebrew word for “holiday.”

“You have many holidays,” this gentile was saying.

“I understand the holiday of Pesach, when you eat matzah, and the holiday of Sukkos, when you sit in a sukkah and use the arba minim. But I don’t understand the holiday of Shemini Atzeres. What’s that for?”

Hillel’s explanation was that the holiday of Shemini Atzeires symbolizes loving one’s neighbor as oneself.

Hashem created Shemini Atzeires so we can keep the unity that we gained over the Yamim Nora’im and love each other a little bit more.

How does Shemini Atzeires connect with the eighth day of Chanukah?

On the final night of Chanukah, all the branches of the menorah are lit. This symbolizes the combined light of every Yid. Some people have a fire that is continuously illuminated by serving Hashem. Others do not burn with that fire. Yet everyone has some sort of spiritual

illumination. Our avodah on the final night of Chanukah is to increase in the sense of unity among Klal Yisrael.

One of my dear friends, Chavi, told me the following story that emphasizes the power of Chanukah’s light.

Tali and Yosef Rosen were a happily married couple. Yet the one blessing they yearned for, a healthy child, had not yet been granted. Finally, after ten years of waiting, they were thrilled to discover that their dream was on the horizon.

At first, things went smoothly. However, after a few months, at a routine checkup, the doctor expressed concern. “Mrs. Rosen, things are not progressing properly.

Go home and return next week, when we’ll reevaluate our options.”

Tali was devastated. It was the night before Chanukah, and in most homes, people were eagerly awaiting the upcoming yom tov. In the Rosen home, however, the darkness was palpable.

Yosef tried to encourage his distraught wife. “Tali, this is an extremely difficult test. However, as Chanukah begins, I want to remind you of the special opportunity that hadlakas neiros offers us. This is a time especially suited for davening. Just as the oil in the one remaining flask burned for eight miraculous days, Hashem can allow miracles to happen in the guise of nature.”

Every night of Chanukah, Tali took her husband’s advice to heart and spoke earnestly to Hashem. “The life of our unborn child, for whom we’ve waited so long, is in your hands, Hashem. You can grant or restore life. Please allow us the zechus of having a healthy baby!”

On Zos Chanukah, Tali remained near the candles for a long time, beseeching Hashem for mercy.

The next morning, the couple returned to the doctor. Tali underwent tests, and then they waited anxiously for an answer.

When the doctor called them in, the silence in the room was deafening. It seemed to take the doctor extra long to respond.

Finally, the doctor began. “Mr. and Mrs. Rosen, I’m not sure how to say this. Tali is carrying twins, and, unfortunately, one baby is no longer alive. Yet I see a second baby with

a strong and wonderful heartbeat. I don’t know how we missed this earlier, but it seems like there’s a good chance for the second baby to thrive.”

Several months later, Tali and Yosef were blessed with a beautiful baby girl.

When Chavi shared this story with me, she related that at the time that she heard this story, a close friend of hers, Shira, had told her that she too was longing for a baby.

Complications arose, and Shira’s hope dimmed. Inspired by the above story, Chavi decided to daven for Shira by the light of the menorah. Throughout Chanukah, and especially on the last night, Chavi davened for Hashem to grant Shira and her husband a healthy baby. At the same time, Chavi experienced a fleeting personal wish. She had a beautiful, large family, but she wanted another baby of her own. Yet she was in her forties and felt she needed more zechusim.

This thought rested in the back of Chavi’s mind, yet she was able to move out of her personal space to focus deeply on Shira’s needs.

A few months later, Chavi discovered that she was going to have a baby. Shortly afterward, she learned that Shira was going to have a baby as well. Unfortunately, however, Shira had many complications and frightening moments.

Chavi davened for Shira’s baby with overwhelming emotion, sensing that the unborn baby was tied up with hers.

Eventually, almost nine months after Chanukah, Chavi welcomed a beautiful baby boy into her family. Seven weeks later, Shira’s baby boy was also born.

Zos Chanukah is the culmination of lights and contains tremendous power and opportunity for blessing and unity. Rav Yisroel MiRuzhin said that the tefillos of a simple person on Zos Chanukah are equivalent to those of a tzaddik. Let us utilize this powerful day to elevate our tefillos and to connect to Hashem, the Source of all blessings.

Reb Aharon Roth

Reb Arele, the Shomer Emunim (1894–1947)

Reb Aharon Roth, also known as Reb Arele, was a Hungarian Rebbe who established his chassidus first in Europe and then in Yerushalayim in 1939, when he moved there and again attracted followers. He became known as the Shomer Emunim after his sefer of that title.

After Reb Arele’s death, the chassidus split so that followers of his son, Reb Avrohom Chayim, took on the name Shomrei Emunim, and followers of his son-in-law became known as Toldos Aharon. (Toldos Aharon later split further into Toldos Avraham Yitzchak and Toldos Aharon.) *** Reb Arele was a very sick and weak Rebbe. He had a terrible illness where he could not hold down any food. Every time that he ate, he vomited it all.

Once, in the middle of davening maariv on the fourth night of Chanukah, Reb Arele felt very unwell. The chassidim rushed through their davening, and afterward Reb Arele started to go home. He didn’t get too far, however, before he collapsed on the ground, unconscious.

His chassidim feared for his life.

They did everything they could

to revive him and summoned a doctor, who rushed over.

The doctor saw that Reb Arele’s pulse was very faint, and that he was at risk of dying. “I need to consult with other doctors to see if there’s anything we can do to save his life,” he said before leaving to summon another doctor.

Reb Arele was only half conscious, but he motioned for his chassidim to bring his menorah so that he could light it.

They brought the menorah right away, and Reb Arele gathered his last bits of strength to quietly and haltingly make the berachos.

From one word to the next, his voice grew stronger and clearer.

When he reached the words “she’asah nisim la’avoseinu bayamim haheim bazeman hazeh — Who performed miracles for our forefathers in those days, at this time,” he jumped up with tremendous energy and enthusiasm.

After lighting the menorah, Reb Arele sang his customary songs.

Then he told his chassidim to start dancing, and they danced up a storm while singing “Nishmas.”

Even Reb Arele joined in!

The

doctor

who

had

just

examined him was known as an outspoken apikores, and so, in the middle of the lively dancing, Reb Arele said, “Tell the doctor to come here. He’ll see with his own eyes that there’s a G-d in the world.”

The chassidim hurried to call the doctor, but they didn’t tell him why. The doctor rushed to Reb Arele’s home, sure that Reb Arele was in critical condition and that these were his last moments.

But as the doctor drew closer to Reb Arele’s house, he heard singing and dancing. And when he entered, he couldn’t believe his eyes. He had already given up on Reb Arele, and there the Rebbe was, dancing with tremendous enthusiasm!

“Had I not seen this myself, I would never have believed it!” exclaimed the doctor.

“I really was very weak, and I felt that I was near my end,” Reb Arele explained. “But I wanted to do one last mitzvah before I died. I pushed myself to light the menorah, and that rejuvenated me and gave me a new chiyus.”

The doctor got the message loud and clear. He did teshuvah and became very close to Reb Arele.

Reb Nosson Tzvi Finkel

Rosh Yeshivah of the Mir Yeshivah

(1943–2011)

Shira Yael Klein Many a bachur arriving at the Mir under Reb Nosson Tzvi’s tutelage was astounded by the warm reception extended to him by the hanhalah and by everyone else. It made no difference where a bachur came from, what kind of yeshivos he had attended, or who his father was. The sole criterion for a bachur to be accepted into the Mir was that he be truly interested in learning.

One might expect that bachurim coming from such a panoply of backgrounds — Israeli, American, European, chassidish, Litvish, Sephardic and Ashkenazic — wouldn’t meld into a cohesive unit, but they did. And they were able to do so because they followed Reb Nosson Tzvi’s example.

On one of Reb Klein’s first days in the Mir as a young American bachur, he was slowly making his way up the stairs when suddenly a Yerushalmi-looking man with a large white beard and pei’os came barreling down toward him.

“I’m sorry, you must think I’m a polar bear!” the man apologized in perfect English.

The disoriented American bachur now felt completely discombobulated. The unperturbed chassid, however, struck up a conversation with the bachur, introducing

“I want each one of you to turn to the person on your right and then to the one on your left,” he said, “and say shalom aleichem, and ask them their name.”

This theme of achdus was typical of Reb Nosson Tzvi. The rosh yeshivah would often repeat a saying he’d heard from Reb Chaim Zev Finkel (his second cousin, who was the mashgiach at the Mir when he arrived as a bachur), which was: “I don’t know how someone can walk up or down a flight of steps in yeshivah and not say good morning to every person he passes…”

When Reb Nosson Tzvi arrived, he heard from the medics that the bachur was in critical condition. He begged the medics not to give up and to continue to fight for the boy’s life. The medics heeded his pleas, and after performing CPR for a long time, they finally got a pulse and transported the bachur to the hospital.

If not for the rosh yeshivah rushing to the bachur’s side and exhorting the medics not to give up, the boy — whose vital signs had been undetectable for a while — might have died.

That night, the rosh yeshivah addressed the bachurim. He offered them words of chizuk to get through the crisis, and he also attempted to ensure that they felt the pain of their fellow talmid. Reb Nosson Tzvi quoted the Gemara in Berachos that states that one who is in a position to beg for Divine mercy on behalf of a friend and doesn’t do so is considered a sinner.

Each year, at the annual Chanukah mesibah, Reb Nosson Tzvi would get up to speak. And in the last year of his life, he told his students that he had a personal request.

To ensure that the talmidim wouldn’t feel sheepish about fulfilling Reb Nosson Tzvi’s request, the hanhalah at the head table heeded the rosh yeshivah’s request as well, with everyone turning to one another and shaking hands!

This was his approach under ordinary circumstances, and during trying times he demanded an even greater level of achdus.

Once, during lunchtime, a bachur in the yeshivah collapsed in the miklat (bomb shelter), which served as one of the batei midrash.

At seudah shlishis that Shabbos, the rosh yeshivah spoke again. This time, he quoted the pasuk that states that Moshe Rabbeinu “saw the pain of his brethren” (Shemos 2:11). The Midrash teaches that it was due to this empathy that Moshe Rabbeinu earned his position as a leader of Klal Yisrael.

“We must feel the pain of a friend in need,” the rosh yeshivah implored. “It is a prerequisite for greatness.”

Chapter 15 Recap: A confused Nachman rides the tube to work , where his ner ves are set on edge when a man, who seems to be following him, sits down right across from him and stares. Nachman moves to sit near two businessmen and is shocked when, as he prepares to get of f the tube, one of the men tells him not to mix into the Bernsteins’ af fairs.

I stumbled off the train in a stupor. The businessmen didn’t follow. I was alone and made my way dazedly through the tunnels to the connecting train that would take me to work. I was like an automaton.

I couldn’t think, I couldn’t act or react. I was, now I realize, in deep shock, but I didn’t know it at the time.

I just about managed to figure out which train I needed to take next and got onto it. Sitting down, I looked fearfully around me for potential starers and commentators, but everyone was exactly normal.

No one made veiled comments to me about the Bernsteins, and no one tried to stare me down. Had I imagined the whole thing? Maybe I had fallen

asleep on the train and the whole incident with the bald bearded man and the two businessmen was a dream.

Yeah, that must be it, I decided. Nothing like that could happen in real life. It was too much like a thriller movie to be genuine. I spent the remainder of the journey mumbling to myself, convincing myself of this, and by the time I reached work, I was pretty much back to normal. It’s amazing how mind over matter works, isn’t it? Or even mind over mutter.

If my work colleagues and my secretary thought there was anything odd about me, they were far too polite and British to say so. I smiled broadly

at everyone and acted like a genial boss. As I’m known as a bit of a workplace grouch, this in itself should have raised the alarm. I was like a puppet of myself — not real at all.

Eventually, my secretary, Babs, spoke up. She was late middle aged, at least twenty years my senior, frumpy and dowdy, but a fantastic asset in the workplace: efficient, good at handling clients, and patient with my moods.

She wasn’t Jewish, but had picked up enough about our faith, our ways, and even some Yiddish and Hebrew, to be able to handle most situations. She’d been with my law practice for fifteen years and considered herself either part of the family or part of the furniture, and either way entitled to have her say.

“You won the lottery there, Mr. Feld?” Babs asked, direct and to the point as always.

“No, I wish, why do you think I have?” I asked, my grin disappearing.

“You’ve got this inane grin on your face. Have had it since you walked in. I was just wondering what brought it on?”

Bab’s question elicited nothing from me. Instead, I just stared at her like the dazed idiot I was, and then, still grinning, went to my office, leaving her staring after me in confusion.

After a little while she knocked and came in with a cup of coffee. Normally that would have been extremely welcome, but for some reason, today, even the thought of drinking coffee nauseated me. I waved it away and asked for tea.

“Mr. Feld, are you feeling all right? You’re asking for tea?”

I wasn’t smiling now. I just said, “I can have tea

without a whole song and dance being made about it, can’t I?” She stared at me and then wheeled around, walking out with the cup of coffee, obviously not well pleased.

As was I not pleased with myself. Why had I reacted the way I had? And to Babs of all people, without whom I literally couldn’t cope in my practice. Was I testing her loyalty, when so many people around me didn’t appear to be who they had seemed to be originally?

I thought things through. The Bernsteins had disappeared. They had said they were going to Schindler Square, but not only weren’t they there now, they had apparently never been. They’d never gone there in the first place.

Mottel and Gittel Bernstein were our oldest friends, both literally and figuratively.

They had lived next door to us since we’d moved onto Flower Street just before Avi was born. We had witnessed their last children leave home just as our firstborn came into ours. Mottel had taken me to the local minyan and introduced me to the kehillah as if I were a long-lost relative. Got me an aliyah long before I was really entitled to one. He was like a surrogate father to me, as Gittel was a surrogate mother to Debbie. How could there be anything suspicious about those two?

And yet they had said they were going to Schindler Square. They’d said it quite clearly, and they weren’t there, and had never been there.

Xavier Roberts had moved in. Now, he I didn’t trust an inch. He was large, bald, Russian, and eminently untrustworthy. A likely Novichok poisoner living next door. That was simple.

Montague Stilton was…I rocked my hand, palm downward, in an a-bit-like-this-a-bit-like-that kind of motion. I couldn’t make him out.

But Babs…

I got up suddenly and went to find her. And apologize.

As usual, she forgave me instantly, and gave me a cup of tea, which I didn’t even fancy now, but I thought I’d better have it or she would totally throw a tantrum.

“Mr. Feld,” she said kindly as I sipped, “what is the matter? I’ve never seen you like this.”

“Weird things going on on my street,” I said. “I’d rather not talk about it, but it’s very worrying. I’m sorry if I upset you. This has nothing to do with you, and I let it out on you, which wasn’t fair.”

Her face relaxed into a look of motherly concern.

“Oh, that’s alright Mr. Feld, you’ve already apologized. I won’t question you any further. But I’m here if you need to talk about it.”

“Thank you, Babs, I know you are. Now, let me finish my tea and then we’ll do some correspondence, okay? I’ll send you some text to edit.”

She nodded and smiled. Normality had been restored. At her age, that was all that mattered. She wasn’t too keen on change, and I didn’t blame her.

As I said, I was at least twenty years her junior, and I didn’t like change much either.

The rest of the day progressed normally. I finished early, mainly because I was too stressed to be a workaholic, and I took the tube home. No strange businessmen or other weird-looking people accosted me. I almost began to believe that I had imagined the entire episode on the tube that morning.

Then I remembered Montague Stilton and the anomaly at Schindler Square. And how the Bernsteins had vanished. I hadn’t imagined that.

Debbie was in the kitchen making supper when I came in. There was a good, homey smell of stew

cooking, and the table was laid for a meat meal.

She barely looked at me, and I thought, Uh-oh, what have I done wrong now? It was a weird anomaly — her making a delicious supper and yet obviously displeased about something.

“Okay, Debbie,” I said, giving up on pretending everything was okay. “What is it? What have I done wrong?”

She looked at me in genuine puzzlement. “Why, Nachman? What do you think you’ve done wrong?”

“I’ve no idea. Please tell me. I’ll apologize, and we can move past it and enjoy whatever it is that’s cooking.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said.

“You have that look about you that you have when you’re annoyed with me,” I said.

“I’m not annoyed with you at all,” she said. “I’m worried sick about Avi. He hasn’t come home today.

He was on a day trip with his friends, but they’re all home and he isn’t. I’ve called all of them. They said he got separated from them at some point, and they lost contact. I’ve tried calling his phone, but it’s not even not answering — it’s totally dead like someone’s removed the SIM card. Rikki doesn’t know where he is either. She’s in the other room, phoning everyone she knows, asking if anyone has seen or heard from him.”

“Why didn’t you call me?” I asked. “Not that I know where he is, but I like to be kept in the loop.” I was getting a horrible panicky feeling in my stomach.

“I tried. Several times. You were obviously on the tube, with no signal. I figured you’d come home soon so I could talk to you personally. Nachman, something’s happened to him. I made this supper specially for him, it’s his favorite. I kept thinking maybe the vibes of a mother’s love would call him home. But he hasn’t come.”

The Bully, the Victim, and the Spectator The Spanish Bullfight is the stuff of gory legend. A hulking, snorting bull, horns lowered, charging against a gaudy fighter. Swords and horns flashing and clashing in the sun. The taunting red cape, waved in front of the bull, ostensibly to make him mad. It was an event filled with excitement, drama, and blood – a sport that attracted the nobility and common folk alike.

The man in the ring was not always a matador – an expert fighter. Sometimes he was a condemned prisoner. It was a fight to the death, and crowds of spectators would roar with approval when either party to the fight gained the upper hand. If a person died in the pen, it was all in the name of good sport.

Today, bullfighting is less common than it once was. But bullying is all too prevalent. The rules are the same. A hapless child is forced into a fight against a hardened bully. The arena is the schoolyard; the spectators are taunting children.

Of course most of the kids don’t mean any harm; they’re just there for the fun of it.

There’s a red cape, too. Those are behaviors or situations in the victim that make the bully “see red” and charge – self-esteem issues, quirks or conditions in a victim that can or can’t be controlled.

If comparing bullying to bullfighting seems very harsh, ask a child who was bullied. Such children can attest to the fear, the helplessness, and the feeling of being chased by a brutal enemy. In one sense, bullying is harsher than the bullfight, because there is no quick end to the torture. Instead, each battle is just one round of a war, and the victims suffer endlessly. They sometimes bear the scars for life.

Bullying has led children to depression, delinquency, violence, and suicide. It causes excessive shyness, social isolation, and social phobias. Victims of bullying often avoid going to school, and are more liable to drop out. They suffer emotionally, socially, and academically.

“I dreaded each day of fifth grade,” says Menashe, now in mesivta. “There was an older boy who taunted me endlessly.

Once he stuck his foot out to trip me, and laughed when my

books went flying. Another time, on the bus, he grabbed my yarmulke, and played catch with it, tossing it to his friends in the back of the bus, until one kid threw it out the window. I remember feeling so alone and so ashamed. I lived in fear of the next confrontation, and spent the entire day agonizing over what he was going to do next.”

“It was all so silly, really,” he says. “The whole thing started when I got glasses. The frames were kind of big, and not the most stylish. The bully called me “owl eyes”, and everyone laughed. Then I became his regular victim. It was something else, every day.”

Menashe recalls spending most mornings trying to get out of going to school. He feigned sickness, though the stomach aches were real. He didn’t tell his parents about the bullying.

“I didn’t want the bully to call me a tattle tale. I thought it would just make things worse,” he said. Instead, he suffered in silence. Menashe is quick to point out that the bully didn’t act alone.

“The other kids didn’t usually do anything, but the bully couldn’t have hurt me without their help,” he says. “They laughed at his jokes, and no one ever stood up for me and told him to stop.”

Menashe’s experience is fairly typical. There are many variations. The bullies, who can be boys or girls, pick on someone who is different or vulnerable in some way. The victim could be overweight or undersized. She could be a poor student or the teacher’s pet. He could wear the wrong thing or pursue an unusual hobby. Anything is grist for the bully’s mill. But very often, victims have one thing in common. They are sensitive children with low self esteem.

A bully seeks control, power, and attention. He wants a reaction or confrontation, in which he emerges as the winner.

tell people that from the moment a kid gets up in the morning until he goes to sleep at night, the central mission of the day is to avoid humiliation at all costs.” For victims of bullying, that mission becomes impossible.

The need to avoid humiliation also plays a role for spectators of bullying, who want to conform, at all cost.

“The sixth grader who wants to fit in will go along with harassing other kids,” says Dorothy Esplegade, PhD, University of Illinois; a noted expert on bullying. Even if they don’t actually join the harassment, bystanders play a role, merely by being there. They provide the bully with an audience, and increase the victim’s suffering and humiliation.

If you suspect that your child is being bullied…

Parents should take note of changes that might indicate that a child is being bullied. Such changes include a drop in school performance, school avoidance, and lack of interest in school work or after school activities. More serious signs would include unexplained injuries, torn clothes, missing belongings or money, or repeated requests for money.

If you suspect that your child is being bullied, you need to communicate effectively with your child, through active listening. You may be angered by the things you are hearing, but it is important to stay calm, and avoid interrupting or making angry judgmental comments.

Once the story is clear, you need to empathize with your child.

Don’t say that all kids go through this, and that he should just bear it. Bullying is truly unbearable, and the child needs to know that you understand his pain.

Then, parents need to take steps to help their child defuse the situation. If there is something that is triggering the bullying, see if the trigger can be removed. In Menashe’s case, that would mean buying new, more stylish glasses.

The victim can also be taught social skills. A child can be taught to exhibit confidence and self esteem. When a child stands tall, speaks confidently, and makes eye contact, others gain respect for him, and he is no longer an easy target for bullies.

Children can also be taught that since the bully wants them to react in a certain way, the victims can defuse the situation by denying the bully the satisfaction of that reaction. You can compare the concept by using the “soda machine” analogy.

Suppose there is a malfunctioning soda machine in school that produces free cans of soda every time you kick it. The kids would have a heyday! They would kick it endlessly! Poor machine!

Then suppose that the school administration repairs the machine. That day, the first kid who passes the machine kicks it.

To his surprise, there are no free cans rolling in his direction.

He kicks harder, to no avail. He may give it one final kick, but soon enough, he’ll realize that the fun is over, and will leave.

What’s more, within ten minutes, every kid in school will know that it doesn’t pay to kick the soda machine anymore – so they won’t.

You can teach kids that bullies are hurting them because they love the “free soda” – the tears, the whining, and the fear they see in their victims. But if the victims stop giving the bully what he wants, the “kicking” may stop.

Another technique is to agree with the bully. In Menashe’s case, he could have said, “My glasses do kind of make me look like an owl. Hey, I must be very wise.” Such an answer surprises the bully, and earns the victim new respect in the eyes of his classmates. Parents can help a children make such a response, by role playing, so that the child is prepared for the taunt, and ready to respond.

Bullying must also be tackled by the school. If every yeshiva and school would have a teacher in the schoolyard during recess, and a bus monitor on every bus, bullying would be significantly reduced. Schools can also teach about bullying in a school-wide middos program. Such a program should educate children about the dangers of bullying, and about the responsibilities of spectators.

Students should know that they have the power to stop bullying, by refusing to join or watch bullying incidents. They can also befriend victims, and report incidents to a teacher or principal.

Studies have shown that teachers and principals often underestimate the problem of bullying in their schools. When teachers are asked if there is bullying in their classrooms, they generally say ‘no’. But when students in the same classes are asked if there is bullying in their classes, they almost always answer ‘yes’. When students are taught to report bullying, teachers and principals can intervene.

The fact is that bullying is universal. It takes place amongst boys and girls, at all grade levels, in virtually all schools and yeshivos. It is only the type and intensity of the bullying that varies, with boys being more aggressive, and girls resorting to taunts and exclusion. All bullying is very harmful, and parents, teachers, principals, and students must do everything in their power to stop the bull fighting going on in our school yards.

Shabbos morning.

Jake drew himself up straighter, feeling self-conscious in his stiff blue pants and white dress shirt. Eli had told him that such clothing was considered standard Shabbos wear, but it still felt strange to be so formally dressed on a weekend.

And to be standing outside Eli’s front door in the single formal shirt he owned, no less. What would his neighbor, who’d kindly agreed to go with him to Rabbi Zilberberg’s house for a meal, think of his smart appearance?

“Shabbat shalom, Jake,” Eli greeted him as he pulled open the door to his apartment right on cue. “Wow, you’re dressed nicely. Far better than me.”

Recap: Mr. Green tells Mr. Katz about the suspicious man whom Eli has seen in his apartment, but Mr. Katz waves it off and claims it was a cleaning man. Later, Jake and Eli talk, and Eli says that their family doesn’t have a cleaning man. Jake also extends Rabbi Zilberberg’s Shabbos invitation to Eli. 50

Jake stared at Eli. He too was dressed in a white dress shirt and darkcolored slacks — only, his shirt was a polo shirt, and his pants weren’t as neatly pressed. “Um…” he said, unsure of how to respond to the comment. “Um, you look okay too.”

Eli laughed. “Don’t worry. I’m okay just being me. But let’s go now to the beit knesset like we made up. My father left an hour ago.”

“I would have come to your house an hour ago had I known,” Jake said, falling into step with Eli as they walked out through the exit of their building together. “You told me to come at ten.”

Eli shrugged. “It’s hard for me to sit in the beit knesset for long — same way it’s hard for me to sit still in school. My father doesn’t mind me coming late, though, so long as I’m there to hear some of the Torah reading.”

Jake tried to imagine what his own life might look like if his father would choose to go to shul every Shabbos.

teacher seated in the front of the shul, next to his two sons, following along in the Chumash with them.

Somehow, he couldn’t imagine such a scenario. But then again, he couldn’t either imagine his father going to shul at one time and Jake intentionally showing up an hour later due to “sitting still” issues.

Torah reading, and then davening, ended some forty minutes later. The Zilberbergs sidled right over, and Rabbi Zilberberg extended his hand first to Jake and then to Eli. “Shabbat shalom,” he greeted his students.

Sometimes, he found Eli’s chilled manner incomprehensible.

The boys hurried down the streets together, the wind whipping their cheeks. There were about a dozen boys playing in the shul yard when they arrived, and Jake thought wryly that if not for his presence, Eli would likely have joined them.

“Shabbat shalom, Meir. Shabbat shalom, Yisrael and David.” Eli waved at the boys, sighing slightly as he and Jake entered the actual shul building.

“They’re in middle of reading from the Torah,” Eli said quietly by way of explanation as they entered the shul’s main room. He removed two Chumashim from a bookshelf and quickly settled down with them, opening them both to the right place and pointing.

Jake looked at the page that Eli had opened to, and then his eyes wandered to the baal korei, who was reading the words out loud with aplomb.

Voice up.

Voice down.

Pause for a berachah.

Jake’s heart pounded loudly as he wondered if he’d be able to read out loud with as much confidence when his time to read from the Torah arrived in another two months.

He was a good student, he reassured himself now.

He ought to.

With his eyes, Jake sought out Rabbi Zilberberg’s usually imposing figure. He found his bar mitzvah

From the side of the shul, Mr. Katz drew closer to their group. “Yoav,” Rabbi Zilberberg greeted him. “I’m looking forward to hosting your son. It’s thanks to him, I believe, that Jake agreed to accept my invite.”

Mr. Katz laughed and ruffled Eli’s hair. “It’s our pleasure really, but remember, Eli, I expect to hear only good things about your behavior.”

Eli shrugged, and his cheeks reddened.

Jake, for his part, was filled with an overwhelming sense of relief suddenly that his father was not in the shul — or beit Knesset, as Eli called it — together with him.

Sometimes, having your father around could result in uncomfortable situations.

Rabbi Zilberberg and Mr. Katz chatted for several minutes after that, until eventually the menfolk and boys all left the shul together. At the corner, Eli, Jake, and the Zilberbergs all turned left, while Mr. Katz turned right.

Jake’s thoughts returned to the strange things that Mr. Katz had done over the course of the past few days — at least according to his son, Eli’s, report.

He wasn’t worried about the bugs he’d found in his home.

And he’d insisted that it was a cleaning man who’d been in his home on Thursday morning, even though Eli said otherwise.

And no Mercedes Benz either.

With a shake of his head, Jake forced himself to push away all thoughts of Mr. Katz. It wasn’t right for him to think ill thoughts of his friend’s father.

“Are you waiting for something?” Eli asked as they reached the door of their building and he pulled it wide open. “You keep on looking around, like you’re expecting to see something.”

And besides, he needed to keep his mind open to the new sights and smells that were surely going to greet him in the Zilberberg home.

There were indeed many new sights there, and the delicious aroma was overpowering. “Wow!” Jake said at some point. “It’s…it’s really special in here.”

Sruly and Yanky Zilberberg laughed at this reaction, and they both excitedly pointed out the name of the dish that had so tickled his nostrils. “It’s called cholent, and there are lots of ways to make it, but, yes, it always has a very strong smell and flavor.”

Interesting conversation and divrei Torah punctuated the meal. “Wow,” Jake told Eli in a whisper at one point. “I can’t believe your family has something like this every week. It must be so special.”

Eli’s response was a shrug, making Jake wonder if that was because his family’s meal didn’t look exactly like the Zilberbergs’, or if it was because there were more mysteries going on under the surface.

Mysteries…

That strange sense of foreboding or premonition that had accompanied Jake while watching Mr. Katz earlier returned to him with a vengeance as he and Eli left the Zilberberg home together.

The Zilberberg boys accompanied them halfway toward their house, and when they left, Jake was filled with a strange sense that something was about to happen.

“No, no. It’s nothing,” Jake muttered. But he felt cornered by Eli’s observations. He was expecting something to happen, though he didn’t know what, and it was off-putting to have that feeling after such a special experience at the Zilberbergs’.

The boys ascended the stairwell. Jake craned his neck backward and forward to make sure there was no one around.

The strange feeling refused to leave him.

They reached the second-floor landing, and his sense of premonition ballooned into something real as he noticed a white sheet of paper jutting out from under the crack beneath the Katzes’ front door.

There was no way the note could have been there earlier when Mr. Katz had returned from shul.

Someone must have slipped it under the door since then.

“That note,” Jake pointed.

With a curious expression on his face, Eli bent over to retrieve it. “It’s in German—” he began, then stopped abruptly. There was obviously something else about the note that disturbed him.

Jake drew closer. A swastika insignia seemed to sink its teeth into him, even before the single line of German penetrated his conscience. The words were easy enough to translate.

“We have other methods.”

What?

He turned around. There was no one in the area.

Certainly no men in gray.

The mother parrot will lay 2-3 eggs‬‬ ‫‪which she warms for 28 days. When the small chicks hatch they‬‬ ‫‪are dependent on their mothers for nourishment.‬‬ ‫‪One baby, the largest and strongest, will grab all the food‬‬ ‫‪and the rest of the chicks will not survive. When the parrots‬‬ ‫‪are about 3 months old they will leave the nest and fly off on‬‬ ‫‪their own.‬‬ ‫‪The macaws fly in large groups just above the treetops in‬‬ ‫‪search of food, making a loud racket. When certain fruit trees‬‬ ‫‪ripen they will fly many miles to reach the food.‬‬ ‫‪They have an interesting tendency: they will chew and swallow‬‬ ‫‪soft sand on specific beaches near the water. Researchers write‬‬ ‫‪that this will possibly help them digest their food or derive‬‬ ‫‪certain vitamins and minerals which are found in the sand.‬‬

Imagine a shul where everyone is focused intensely on their tefillos and there are no outside noises whatsoever.

Imagine the hum of davening and kedusha in that shul. The malachim carrying prayers directly up to the holy throne…

The Chasam Sofer writes that shuls that shun idle chatter will be rebuilt during the times of Moshiach.

Ensure that your shul is right there at the forefront by joining the No Talking in Shul Contest now!

How it Works:

To join the No Talking in Shul Contest, fill out the form after Shabbos and submit it to contest@lakewoodvibes.com for our $25/ $35 raffle.

1.1. Four winners will be selected each week over the duration of this initiative.

2.2. You must attend all three tefillos to be eligible for the raffle.

3.3. If you didn’t talk during tefillos on Friday night, Shabbos day, and Shabbos afternoon, you are eligible for the $25 prize, all ages.

4.4. If you didn’t talk during all three tefillah times and attended leining, you are eligible for the $35 prize.

5.5. A parent’s signature must be affixed to the form.

Classic Tiramisu

Bracha Shifrin

The rich and creamy layers of this timeless Italian dessert are an excellent finale for that last Chanukah party — or a dairy melaveh malkah. In this recipe, soft ladyfingers soaked in aromatic espresso meet the velvety texture of mascarpone and whipped cream to make for an elegant and masterful presentation.

Ingredients •

1 container heavy whipping cream

•

1 container mascarpone cheese

•

1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)

•

1 tsp vanilla extract

•

1–2 cups cold espresso (adjust according to how wet you want the lady fingers)

•

1 package of ladyfingers

•

Cocoa powder, for dusting

Instructions 1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy

whipping cream until soft peaks form.

2. In another bowl, combine the mascarpone cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and well combined.

3. Gently fold the whipped cream into the

mascarpone mixture until smooth.

4. Briefly dip the ladyfingers, one at a time, into the cold espresso so they become moist but not soggy.

5. Lay a single layer of wet ladyfingers on the

base of your serving dish.

6. Spread half of the mascarpone and whipped cream mixture over the ladyfingers base.

7. Repeat steps 4–6, forming another layer of ladyfingers with the whipped cream mixture on top.

8. Refrigerate the tiramisu for at least 4 hours, or overnight, and dust the top generously with cocoa powder before serving.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins These moist and flavorful pumpkin muffins are almost irresistible! The addition of chocolate chips gives them a delightful sweetness, making them a perfect breakfast or treat on the go.

Ingredients

2 eggs

•

1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F .

•

1 cup pumpkin puree

•

½ cup oil (vegetable or canola)

•

1 ¾ cups flour

3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the

1 tsp baking soda

•

½ tsp baking powder

eggs, sugar, pumpkin puree, and oil until smooth and well combined..

•

1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon

•

¾ cup chocolate chips (adjust according to preference)

2. Line a muffin tin with paper liners, or grease the muffin cavities well.

4. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon.

5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring just until combined. Avoid overmixing.

6. Gently fold the chocolate chips into the batter.

7. Using a spoon or ice cream scoop, evenly distribute the batter among the muffin cups, filling each one about 2/3 of the way.

8. Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.

9. Once baked, remove the muffins from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

1/2 cup Jasmine Rice (dry, rinsed)

1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF (205ºC) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2.

Cook the rice according to the package directions.

3. In a bowl, whisk together the pineapple juice, lime juice, lime zest, honey,salt, and pepper.

4.

Add in the salmon and toss to combine.

5. Transfer the salmon cubes to the baking sheet and pour the marinade ontop.

6. Bake in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until the salmon is cooked and browned.

When we moved into our new house we had a big beautiful porch. We built our sukka on the porch. We were so excited! My father said that if we had an awning on the porch it would be real simchas yom tov. It was a quite expensive ordeal since our porch was quite large. He was in shul and spoke with his friend about the awning. My fathers’ friend told him that a Rav had said to him that an awning for the sake of a sukka is considered hotzaas Shabbos v’yom tov. We bought an awning and had the workers install it. My entire family was so excited to have a dry beautiful sukka even if it will rain. A few weeks later there was a major snow storm. We had lots of damage on our property. My parents’ insurance company paid for the damage which included the price of the awning. My parents got back the money that they spent on the awning. We were so excited to see the pure hashgachas Hashem!

Many years ago, my great grandmother was driving in the mountains on an unpaved road. Suddenly, the car started sliding! They had recently cut down all the trees, but there were two stumps left - right where the front and back tires of the car got stuck! So Baruch Hashem she was saved from chas v'shalom driving off a cliff! 🥳🥳

My father made a siyum in my house and bochurim came. 1 bochur by mistake left his coat in my house. My father accidentally wore it to shacharis the next morning thinking that it was his coat. In shul he realized it was the wrong coat and it was on his mind to call the bochur. After shacharis my father went to the grocery store. As he was walking into the store low and behold the bochur was there. My father told the bochur that he left his coat in my house. As the boy was saying that he would pick it up my father said that he by mistake wore it to shul and it's in the van!! What hashgacha pratis!!

I really wanted to go to camp I had already applied.

I was psyched!! Then they called me to said that they had no room left. I was down in the dumps!

What could be worse?I was in a very bad mood that day. The sky looked greyer than it was in the morning. Two days later my mother got a text saying that someone wanted to back out of that camp & they were looking for someone to fill their slot #TY!!!
