LETTER EDITOR from the
Iwas never as moved by a keynote address as I was by the speech I heard from released hostage, Sapir Cohen, prior to her recital of a perek Tehillim, on the podium in front of a room full of women.
“Two things kept me going during my time in captivity,” Sapir said with her trademark smile — the smile that stayed with her despite fifty-five grueling days of captivity in Gaza. “One was the feeling that I needed to be where I was. That if someone had to go through such an experience, then I was glad that I was the one and not someone else, because I had the inner strength to get through it.”
Number one was moving enough. It was a paraphrasing of the idea that every Jew has a unique mission in the world—and that every Jew is equipped with the internal and external tools necessary to fulfill that mission.
I waited with bated breath to hear what thing number two was.
“Number two was the feeling that so many angels surrounded me in that gehinnom.”
Those angels, as Sapir’s mother later elaborated, were created by tefillos recited all around the world on Sapir’s behalf. Tefillos were recited on behalf of all the hostages. And whenever anyone asked Sapir’s parents what to do for their daughter, her parents would say to pray.
Sapir felt the results of those tefillos through her dark days and nights in captivity. And therein lies a message for us all. No tefillah goes unanswered and angels surrounded, and continue to surround, our
fellow brethren in Gaza— as a result of our davening.
Kol Yisroel areivin zeh bazeh. We Jews are responsible for each other.
Sapir herself, recited perek 27 of Tehillim by heart every day, for the fifty-five days of her captivity. It was a perek that she’d begun reciting a month before she was abducted, due to a worrisome medical diagnosed, and she continued to recite the perek every day until she knew the words by heart. In captivity, that perek offered her tremendous strength.
“Hashem me’oz chayay memi efchad — Hashem is the stronghold of my life; from whom shall I be frightened?” (Tehillim 27:1).
The first passuk of the perek is always uplifting; how much more so in the incomprehensible circumstances of captivity.
That passuk, and the other thirteen pessukim of mizmor 27, accompanied Sapir during fifty-five nightmarish days in captivity. That Sapir knew the perek by heart before her time in captivity was providential.
Every detail of our perfect world is designed by Hashem. The minutiae of our days —from the thoughts that accompany us, to the skills we know, and the words we remember by heart — are all there for a reason. They enable us to survive, flourish, and grow in our tailormade circumstances.
Have a great week!

The power of belief
The passuk in this week’s parsha says, “And every man whose heart inspired him came, and everyone whose spirit moved him brought the portion of Hashem to the Ohel Moed…” (Shemos 35:21). This passuk refer to the wise-hearted men who built the Mishkan and did all that Hashem commanded them.
The Ramban explains the concept of “whose heart inspired him”. These men had just come out of Mitzrayim. They were used to working with bricks and mortar. In colloquial terms, they had developed gross motor skills but had no experience with fine motor skills such as weaving and sewing. They had never learned such skills from an expert or worked with their hands in such a manner. But, because they so badly wanted to build the Mishkan, they found the ability to do these things. By trusting in the strengths Hashem had given them, they accomplished more than they ever dreamed they could. In the Sichos Mussar, Rav Chaim Shmulevitz describes the power of belief. He quotes Chazal in Taanis 7:2 who state that the day of rain is as great as the day that the world was created, the day of Kabbalas Hatorah, the day of Kibbutz Galuyos, and the day of Techiyas Hameisim.
What is so unique about rain that it is compared to such monumental events? Chazal explain that rain falls in the merit of those who plant and sow. People who work in agriculture must believe that Hashem will bring rain to grow their crops. This trust has a tremendous impact on their life, comparable to the power of the days mentioned above.
The gemara, just quoted, continues with an enigmatic statement. “Come and see how great those are who believe. From where do we see this? From the weasel and the pit. If this is so for one who believes in a weasel and a pit, then how much more so is this true for one who believes in Hakadosh Boruch Hu.”
Tosafos explains the concept of “the weasel and the pit” with the following story:
Once, a young man was walking in a deserted area when he heard a young woman crying out for help from the bottom of a deep pit. He agreed to rescue her on condition that she would marry him. She consented and he rescued her. But then they questioned who would serve as the witnesses to ensure that they remain true to their promise. Just then, a weasel ran across the pit and they decided that the weasel and the pit would be their witnesses. The man and woman then parted ways, and each returned to their hometown. Time passed, and the man forgot his promise, married a different woman and had a child. Tragedy struck when the child fell into a pit and died. This man then had a second child who was bitten by a weasel and who also died. “These are very unusual, strange deaths ,” the man’s wife said. “What is going on?” At this point, the man remembered his promise and told his wife the story. “If so,” his wife said., “you You must go and marry that woman.”The man thus divorced his first wife and married the girl whom he had rescued.
Rav Chaim Shmulevitz explains that when the couple believed that the weasel and pit could be their witnesses, they actually gave them the power to fulfill their words and mete out punishment. Chazal deduce from here how much more power a person who believes in Hashem has.
The power of belief also applies to a person believing in his fellow man. As in the following story:
Abba Yossi visited a city and sat to rest by a spring. While he was there, a spirit appeared and said, “Do you know how many years I have lived here and never hurt a soul? Now an evil spirit has come to rest here, and it is bothering the community.”
“What can I do?” Abba Yossi asked.
“Have everyone from the city meet at the spring with metal utensils ,” the spirit answered. “When they see a whirlpool at the top of the spring, they will know that I, the good spirit, and the evil spirit, are fighting. The people should then bang their metal instruments and scream, “We are with you! We are with you!”
Abba Yossi called the townspeople who followed his instructions and wouldn’t leave the site until they saw droplets of blood on top of the water. This indicated to them that the good spirit that had spoken with Abba Yossi had won over the bad spirit. (Midrash in Vayikra Rabba 24.)
How did the people’s cries of “We are with you,” help the good spirit?
By the townspeople believing in it. Even a spirit, which was not created to need help from other creatures, was able to succeed when the townspeople announced their belief in it.
If this is the case with a spirit, then how much more can we humans, who were created to help each other, accomplish when we believe in each other?
An even more important application of belief, is belief in oneself. In the physical world, every person, can lift a limited amount of weight. Yet, in times of emergency, there have been instances when people have lifted much more than they imagined possible. Like the man who raised his car with a jack to fix it when suddenly, the jack malfunctioned and broke, so that the car dropped onto his daughter’s foot. With superhuman strength, the man lifted the car, removed his daughter’s leg, and rushed her to the hospital where they were shocked to learn that her only injury was a broken foot. Later, when the man calmed down, he analyzed the situation, he and couldn’t understand how he had found the strength to lift his car. In fact, he returned to the spot that his car was in and tried to lift it again, but he couldn’t.
The following story portrays where that type of strength comes from, and how one can access it:
A bachur learning in the Mir was drafted into the army. Upon his release, the mashgiach, Rav Yerucham Levovitz, asked him to describe his experience. and the man obliged. He related that he was drafted to the army with a group of young men and they were led into the camp. “Our commander stood us in front of a row of horses.” the bachur said, “And each solider had to choose a horse, ride it, and jump over a canal a few meters wide.
“Had you ever ridden a horse before?” Rav Yerucham asked the bachur.
“No,I never even walked next to a horse,” the bachur answered.
“If so, how did you succeed in jumping over a canal?” Rav Yerucham asked.
The bachur answered. “There was a soldier standing next to us with open ammunition, and the commander declared that whoever wouldn’t ride would be shot immediately. Suddenly, we all knew how to ride a horse.”
“Oy,” Rav Yerucham exclaimed. “See how much a person can do, and he doesn’t even know it. If a person truly believes that the Torah is our life, that person will know how to learn and become a gaon in Torah.”
This idea is especially appropriate with regard to Parshas Shekolim, which we read this week, on the Shabbos before Rosh Chodesh Adar II. The passuk states, “The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than a half-shekel,” (Shemos 30:15).
Hashem requires every single man, whether rich or poor, to bring the same half a shekel. Hashem is telling each of us: “You are an integral part of the nation; I believe in you, and you are as valuable as a tzaddik.”
How empowering for those who truly want to grow and come close to Hashem. Let’s believe in yourselves and we will be able to tap into our strengths and discover new ones to achieve tremendous accomplishments.

Reb Moshe Isserles The Rema (1530-
1572)
Reb Dovid Moshe of Chortkov once received a tzedakah appeal that necessitated turning to the people of his city for money. His gabbaim, however, protested, telling him that they couldn’t raise funds from their fellow townspeople who were themselves in dire financial straits.
In response, Reb Dovid told his gabbaim the following story:
While the Rema was rav of Krakow, a simple man, named Moshe, lived there too. This Moshe eked out a living by working as a porter. He’d scrimp and save all week and on Erev Shabbos, he would use the money that he had painstakingly toiled over, to buy alcohol at the local tavern. He’d get drunk on his mead and was thus known by the name, “Moshe Shikker.”
One erev Shabbos, as Moshe was on the way to the tavern, he heard a woman lament, “Moshe is going to drink, and I don’t even have money for Shabbos candles.”
Moshe was embarrassed when he heard this. How could he use his money to get drunk, when a Jewish woman didn’t have money for Shabbos candles? His yetzer hara however, was persistent. “You’ve worked hard all week to save this money,” it goaded him. “You deserve your drink!”
Moshe was torn. But somehow, he mustered up his self-control and gave the woman the money, and that erev Shabbos he remained sober.
A short while later, Moshe died. It was close to Shabbos so there was no time to bury him. Instead, his body was placed in the room of the Chevra Kadisha’s near the shul, to be tended to on Motzei Shabbos.
On Motzei Shabbos, however, a curious thing happened. Reb Moshe suddenly came to the Rema, saying. “I am a messenger from the beis din shel ma’alah. I came to tell you that there’s a heavenly kitrug against you.”
The Rema knew of Reb Moshe as a drunk, but Reb Moshe insisted that he had died and
was now a messenger of the beis din shel ma’alah.
The Rema was pretty sure that Moshe was alive, drunk, and spouting nonsense. But to be on the safe side, he stepped into the shul and asked the men there, “Is Moshe, the porter, still alive?”
“He died yesterday,” the men answered, “and his body is in the Chevra Kadisha’s room.”
Understanding that something serious was at play, the Rema returned to Reb Moshe and asked him why he had been sent.
Reb Moshe replied, “I came to tell you that there’s a kitrug against you in Shamayim, because you do not give poor people the zechus of fulfilling the mitzvah of tzedakah. When you collect money, instead of asking the poor to give their groszy [small monetary unit in Poland] coins, you collect only from the wealthy.”
“How can I get rid of the kitrug?” the Rema asked.
“Tell the gabbai tzedakah that from now on, when tzedakah is being collected, they should also collect coins from the poor. Though it might be beneath their dignity to do this, and it may take a lot of time, the
simple people will thus be mezakeh.”
“Why were you given the honor of bringing me this message from shamayim?” asked the Rema.
Reb Moshe told the Rema about the time that he had given money, that he had painstakingly saved over the course of a week, to a poor woman who couldn’t afford Shabbos candles. “This,” he said. “Was my zechus.”
Now it was the Rema’s turn to enlighten Reb Moshe. “That woman was Esther Hamalkah. She kept rising higher and higher in Olam Habah, until she reached a place where she was not allowed to enter, a level of Gan Eden reserved for the impoverished who nonetheless gave tzedakah. But Esther Hamalkah had never been impoverished.”
“Esther Hamalkah stood before the beis din shel ma’alah and protested, ‘I did chessed my entire life. Is it my fault that min hashamayim I was wealthy? I’m sure that even if I had been incredibly poor, I would still have been busy with tzedakah and chessed’.”
“The beis din shel ma’alah considered her words and decided that she would come down to the world again as a poor woman. If she would indeed do chessed, and give tzedakah despite her poverty, she would be allowed to enter the realm of gan eden from which she had been barred. And that woman who did not have money for Shabbos candles was Esther Hamalkah, in her gilgul as a poor woman,” concluded the Rema.
This was the story that Reb Dovid Moshe of Chortkov told his gabbaim about the importance of collecting tzedakah even from the poor. ***

Reb Aryeh Leib Sarah’s (1730 – 1791)
Reb Leib Sarah’s was a talmid of the Baal Shem Tov, and a rebbe in his own right. He spent his life wandering from place to place to raise money to ransom imprisoned Jews.
***
Reb Yaakov had a hotel in the city of Kaliv (modern day Nagykálló, Hungary) which many tzaddikim stayed at. Once, while Reb Leib Sarah’s was staying there he told Reb Yaakov to summon the local lord.
“Tell him, ‘Leib summons you.’” he said.
“But huge guard dogs surround the lord’s palace,” Reb Yaakov responded. “I won’t be able to get in.”
“Go anyway,” Reb Leib Sarah’s said. “Otherwise, I’ll send my messengers.”
“Can I go with one of your messengers?” Reb Yaakov asked. “Yes.”
Reb Yaakov went with one of Reb Leib Sarah’s messengers and, miraculously, they reached the lord.
“Leib summons you,” they said. “I’ll go to him right now,” the lord replied. So saying, he accompanied Reb Yaakov to his hotel, and Reb Leib Sarah’s took him into a private room and spoke to him.
When they finished, and the lord was about to leave, Reb Leib Sarah pointed at Reb Yaakov, saying, “This is Reb Yaakov. He’s an expert on horses. When you want to buy a
horse at the fair, take him with you.”
Time passed. Reb Yaakov became a successful businessman, unfortunately accruing some jealous enemies along the way. The leader of these enemies was the local priest and one year, before Pesach, he concocted a plot against Reb Yaakov. He ordered a non-Jewish youth who worked for Reb Yaakov to go to a distant city and stay there. Then, he got false witnesses to testify that Reb Yaakov had killed the youth.
Reb Yaakov’s court case was scheduled for after Pesach. In the meantime, he was thrown into jail, but his relatives managed to bail him out for a large sum of money.
At around this time, the lord decided to attend a horse fair in another city. He went to Reb Yaakov’s house to ask him to come with him, as Reb Leib Sarah’s had advised, and he found Reb Yaakov in an upset state of mind.
“Why are you so upset?” the lord asked.
Reb Yaakov told him that he had been falsely accused of murdering his non-Jewish employee.
“Don’t worry,” the lord reassured him. “If you’re telling the truth, I will do my best to help you in court. But, for now, please come with me to the fair.”
Reb Leib agreed, and amazingly, at the fair, they met none other than the Reb Yaakov’s non-Jewish
employee, whom he had been accused of murdering!
“The priest forced me to come to this city,” the youth cried. “And he won’t let me go back home even though I want to.”
The lord saw that the accusation against Reb Yaakov was a fabricated one. He brought the youth back with him to Kaliv and gave him comfortable lodgings so that he’d have no reason to run away, all the while keeping the matter a secret.
Finally, the day of Reb Yaakov’s court case arrived. False witnesses stood up and testified that Reb Yaakov had killed the youth and the judges found Reb Yaakov guilty and sentenced him harshly.
Suddenly, the lord walked into the court. At his side, for all to see, was the “murdered” youth.
In this manner, the plot was exposed, and the wicked priest was found guilty and hung.
Reb Leib Sarah’s had foreseen all this with ruach hakodesh, acting to save Reb Yaakov before Reb Yaakov knew that he was in danger.

The Guy Next Door
Debbie was smiling, too, which was a first. For the last little while at least.
“Has Avi shown up?” I asked immediately, my heart pounding in my chest like it was trying to get out.
“No,” Debbie said, causing my innards to plummet again in disappointment. “I was smiling because you went to Maariv. It shows you’re trying to normalize.”
“What do you mean by normalizing?” I asked, tears forming in my eyes. “Accepting the status quo? I’ll never, ever, do that. But contorting myself like a pretzel achieves nothing, while going to shul and davening Maariv hopefully will. It’s made me feel a little better, anyway. But boy, oh boy, why didn’t you tell me what a mess I looked like?”
Both my womenfolk looked at me up and down with new eyes.
“Well, now that you mention it…” Rikki started. “What?” I said. “This is after I went to the men’s room and cleaned myself up! I got several thumbs-ups afterwards from the guys in the minyan! You’re saying I still look a mess?”
“It’s not important,” Rikki said. “You look fine, Dad. You could do with a haircut and a beard trim, and there are some stains on your jacket that you must have
missed. Look, here and here. But all that is irrelevant. Dad and Mum, I waited till Dad came back from shul to show you what I discovered on the flash drive, cuz I wanted to show you together.”
Debbie and I followed our daughter upstairs to her bedroom. Unlike Avi’s chaotic mess of a room, Rikki’s was OCD tidy and neat. I didn’t need to ask why no one had tidied up Avi’s room, leaving it exactly how he had left it. The answer was obvious: it was turning into something we hoped it wouldn’t be, a shrine. I noted now how we all kind of skirted around his bedroom door, making it kind of obvious that we were trying to avoid everything that room represented.
Not good.
In Rikki’s starkly orderly bedroom, she bade us to sit on her bed, while she sat at her desktop computer. Her big screen was tilted towards us.
“So,” Rikki began, “there’s this extremely techie guy called Simon Mead, and I shared several things with him. One was the phone messages sent from the burner. The other was the contents of the flash drive. But here’s the thing. We assumed it was a burner phone because it was cleverly encrypted so we couldn’t see where the message was from, and we got that message saying

the number you have called has not been recognized. But Simon says,” she giggled suddenly. “Simon says it wasn’t a burner phone. It was a normal phone cleverly disguised as a burner, and Avi managed to encrypt on it a little piece of video.”
“What?” Debbie gasped. “Where? I want to see!”
“Those were text messages,” I pointed out.
“Yes, but Avi is very techie. And he knew I’d find someone at least equally as techie if not more so. Simon’s been working very hard on the video clip and he thinks he has something that could help us track Avi down.”
Debbie and I sat up straighter. “What?” we said in unison.
“Simon enlarged and enhanced several bits, sending it back to me so we can see for ourselves. I think Avi took some risk taking what amounted to a partial selfie. I’m going to play it for you both now. It has no sound.”
“Why no sound?” I asked, crushed. I wanted to hear from his own voice that he was OK.
“Simon says,” Rikki grinned, “that firstly, a soundfree file hugely decreases the file size. You can send an old, silent film by email for example, and it won’t take up much space. Secondly, and I think this is the main reason, it was probably for safety. As I said, Avi took a big risk, and a little bit of silent video was safer, and less likely to be picked up, if he was under surveillance.”
“But what good is it without sound?” Debbie asked. “It could give us clues as to where he is,” Rikki said. “Where he’s being held, you mean,” Debbie said bitterly.
“Let’s look at it,” I said.
We both leaned forward and looked at Rikki’s screen. “The video is one minute, forty-five seconds,” Rikki warned. “So watch carefully.”
There was Avi, appearing serious but focused. He looked okay, not like he was being tortured. Still, there was something haunted, about his expression. Quickly, he pointed around the room and mouthed the word: “Look.”
We looked.
It was a small room. We could see a narrow bed against the wall, a hard chair, a table, and a small door that opened to show a tiny shower room and toilet. Then Avi showed us the window in the main room. It was small, high, and narrow; obviously to stop anyone from getting out through it. Like a window in a prison cell.
Avi went back to looking straight at the camera, mouthing something to the viewers. Then we, his viewers, saw him look sideways for a second. And then the clip ended abruptly.
“That’s it?” Debbie practically shrieked. “The clip shows us nothing! He’s obviously in a prison of some kind! No one can get out of that window!”
“It shows us he’s alive, and he looks unharmed,” I said helpfully. “That’s something, at least.”
“I thought it would give us clues as to where he is!” she sobbed.
“Mum, Dad, slow down. He was obviously trying to mouth something to us. We didn’t get it. You’re not watching the video properly. Watch it again. I’ll slow it down this time so you can observe.”
I couldn’t believe our eighteen-year-old daughter was telling us, her parents, to observe. Talk about role reversal. I fought the urge to tell her to go to her room until she could learn respect. She was in her room, and so were we.
I’ll admit, my lipreading skills are somewhat rusty. I don’t use them much in my daily life.
Rikki gestured to us to pay attention, pressed some keys on her computer and played the clip again. This time in slow motion.
“The bathroom has a small window too. Look,” Rikki said. We honestly hadn’t noticed that. But yes, there it was.
“Also too small to escape through.” Debbie broke into fresh sobs.
“Mum stop crying and please observe!” Rikki commanded. “Don’t look at the windows as a means of escape.”
“How else should we look at them?”
“Firstly, let’s see what we can see through them. That will give us clues as to where he might be. And secondly…” Rikki paused for dramatic effect. “I’m going to slow the video down even more.” She pressed some more keys. “Aside from looking at what’s outside the room, let’s see if we can see anyone reflected in the windows. That last moment, with Avi trying to mouth something to us, he looked sideways. Someone came into the room and that’s why he stopped. We need to try and lipread what he was trying to tell us before that interruption, and we also need to see if we can catch even the slightest reflection of that person in the windows. We need to watch the clip again.”

The 7 year-old reacted to her mother’s exasperation by turning sulky and tearful. With increasing frequency she missed the bus and needed to be driven to school.
When Shonnie began feigning illness in order to stay home, her baffled parents contacted the teacher. Shonnie’s teacher confirmed that their daughter’s zest for learning had waned and she was not finishing class assignments. Once a top student, she had now been grouped with a lower-level reading group. Her parents met with the school psychologist who had several sessions with Shonnie. Gradually, the mystery unraveled. It turned out that Shonnie was being consistently harassed on the school bus by a girl from an older class. The girl would tease her, call her names and block her from getting off the bus at her stop. She threatened to “teach her a lesson” if Shonnie “tattled.”
A timid child by nature, Shonnie’s “escape tactic” was to avoid the school bus, and eventually, to avoid school itself. She was too afraid of retaliation to divulge the true source of her trouble. Unlike many cases of school-related bullying whereby the perpetrator succeeds in drawing in other children who continue the harassment even after the ringleader is stopped, Shonnie’s “tormentor” was acting alone. As soon as this girl’s abusive behavior was exposed and she was disciplined, the bullying ended, and Shonnie’s life returned to normal.
“I felt as if we’d awakened from a bad dream,” her mother said. “Now I understand how important it is to teach quiet children better communication skills and the importance of trusting adults.”
Unfortunately, for many victims of bullying, the matter is not so simple.
Bullying Leaves Scars
School bullying involves the psychological, emotional, social or physical harassment of one student by another. It takes the form of name-calling, taunts, slandering, shunning and physical abuse. Victims of bullying can suffer lowered self-esteem, physical health difficulties, anxiety disorders and/or depression.
Bullying can lead to excessive shyness, social isolation or a social phobia. Children who are victims of bullying may become school “avoiders” and later, drop-outs.
Which children are most likely to be the victims of a bully? Experts point to children who are perceived as different; shy, sensitive children; those with poor social skills and children who are learning disabled and stand out as scholastically below par.
Sometimes parents may not know if their child is being bullied. Some children, like Shonnie,` are intimidated into secrecy. They may also keep quiet because they feel ashamed that they have allowed this to happen. They may fear that the parents will either criticize them or will intervene in a way that will make everything worse.
Be Alert For Telltale Signs
If you suspect your child might be the victim of bullying, look first for general signs of school distress. These might include falling grades, physical complaints on school days, and lack of interest in school work or after-school activities.
More specific signs would be unexplained injuries or torn clothes, missing belongings or money, or repeated requests for money. [Bullies often coerce children into giving them money or other valuables.] If someone is taking your child’s lunch, he or she may come home hungry even though he took an adequate lunch to school.
You need to know how to get your child talking about his concerns. It is best to broach the subject at a calm neutral time. Ask general questions about whether something is bothering your child. Get as detailed a narrative as possible. Avoid interrupting or judging. Try to stay calm and do not make outraged statements while your child is telling his tale.
Avoid offering premature solutions. You may not get the entire story on the first telling. Be patient and bring up the topic again later. Finally, if you feel that something is going on and suspect that your child is withholding information, call his or her teacher.
No one needs to put up with a bully’s outrageous behavior.
How Parents Can Help
How can you help your child deal with the bullying? First, teach him to avoid being an easy target. A bully often surrounds himself with a group of peers. He consciously picks weaker, more vulnerable victims, and repeatedly bothers the same people. He tends to do his bullying when authorities are not around. In dealing with a bully, teach your child that posture, voice and

eye contact are important. These telegraph messages about whether you are vulnerable.
•Act brave.
Sometimes wearing the mask of courage is enough to stop a bully. If you walk by as though you’re not afraid and hold your head high, a bully may be less likely to give you trouble.
•Ignore a bully.
Simply ignoring a bully’s threats and walking away robs the bully of his or her fun. Bullies want a big reaction to their teasing and meanness. Acting as if you don’t notice and don’t care might weaken a bully’s incentive and bring his harassment to an end.
•Stand up for others.
If you stick up for others when they are picked on you are sending a message to bullies that bullying won’t be tolerated. Then when you stand up for yourself, the bully knows you mean it.
•Be a buddy.
Bullies are often cowards, afraid to stand alone. Two friends facing a bully is often all it takes to force a bully to back down. Make a plan with friends to walk shoulder to shoulder on the way to school or recess or lunch or wherever you think you might meet the bully.
•Tell an adult.
If you are being bullied, it’s very important to tell an adult. Teachers, principals and parents can all help to stop bullying.
•Don’t bully back.
Don’t hit, kick, or push back to deal with someone bullying you or your friends. Fighting back just satisfies a bully and sets the stage for further skirmishes. It’s best to stay close to others, stay safe, and get help from an adult.
Teachers Hold The Key
How can teachers and educators work to eliminate bullying?
The first imperative is to stop looking the other way, experts say. As long as we ignore dysfunctional behavior, we are giving it the green light to continue.
The second step is to recognize that adults must take charge to stop it. Kids can’t do it on their own. They often don’t talk about it with adults because they’re ashamed, embarrassed, or they’re afraid adults will only make it worse. But deep down, they want to talk about it. They need to know that every adult at school will listen to them and help if they report a problem with bullying.
Here are some practical steps teachers can take to address the problem of bullying in their classroom: Talk about it.
Have class discussions about tolerance and respect for others, as well as the fallout everyone suffers when bullying is permitted. In the words of one expert, “Kids need to know that it’s cool to stand up for other kids.” Standing up for others takes courage, but when the values of a school or community support this ethic, it goes a very long way toward reducing bullying in a school.
Students need to realize that they hold a lot of power collectively. When the peers say bullying is out, IT IS OUT. When a peer group says bullying is OK either by condoning it or doing nothing, they risk becoming a target themselves, exposing their friends to harassment and lowering the Torah values we hold dear.
Look for it and confront it when you witness it -- every time.
Too often we minimize and normalize bullying by saying things like “kids will be kids,” or “sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt you.” Don’t allow these sayings to cover up malicious harassment. Make it clear that if anyone’s having a problem, they can talk with you, and make sure you follow through.
Teach bystanders how to safely intervene. Most students are not chronic targets or chronic bullies. They’re bystanders. And as we all know, what students typically do when they witness bullying is stand around and watch. Yet most students agree they don’t like to see it happen, and that they often feel guilty or ashamed for not stepping in and helping out.
What Happens To Bullies?
Some children adopt bullying behavior to help mask their own feelings of inadequacy. They may be learning disabled or for various reasons failing scholastically or socially, and are desperate to win respect from their peers. A bully may lack good adult role models. If he sees parents bullying him or each other, he may regard this type of behavior as simply the way one should act.
Some children fall in with a peer group that uses bullying. They may learn undesirable conduct from these friends. In some cases, the behavior improves when the child is separated from that peer group, and makes new friends.
In the end, most bullies wind up on the losing end. If they continue acting mean and hurtful, sooner or later they find themselves with very few friends left — usually other kids who are just like them. The power they wanted slips away fast. School authorities marginalize them. Other kids move on and leave bullies behind, dismissing them as troublemaking losers. Bullies can change if they absorb the fact that their behavior is not only wrong but destructive to themselves, and if they are willing to learn to use their power in positive ways.
In the case of class bullies who act aggressively to compensate for learning or social disabilities, personalized coaching by teachers and parents often yield dramatic results both academically and emotionally. Aggressive and obnoxious behavior may gradually be replaced by decent and even-keeled social conduct.
In addition to the enormous influence teachers and parents can exert, other children who make a habit of treating others fairly and with respect set a very important tone in the class.
Of course, some bullies never learn. But others respond to social skills training, remediation, “tough love” and positive role-modeling. Gradually they turn into cooperative and likable kids who grow up to become responsible, ethical and productive members of the community.

The Junior Diplomats
Something was clearly going on at the door of the apartment they were in. Eli and Jake strained their ears to try and hear what sounded like a raging argument.
“Electricity issues? A broken main? What are you talking about?”
The words were shouted, not spoken, and the tone was loud and clear. Loud enough for the boys to hear and reach their own conclusions. “Verfluchte arbeiter — accursed workers,” one of their captors kept repeating. “We don’t want you here.”
Apparently, however, there was a gas issue threatening the building and the professionals had been called in to deal with it. The boys’ German-speaking captors seemed angry about the workers’ insistence that they be let into the apartment.
“Du willst nur einen Vorwand haben — You just want an excuse to come into our house.” They heard Adolf shout. “Show me your permit.”
It was hard for Jake and Eli to determine whether the workers were indeed showing their captives their permits, but, if they were, then perhaps help was near.
Jake and Eli exchanged glances. They’d spoken few words out loud that day, for fear of angering their captors. Instead, they were slowly learning to read each other’s facial expressions. Something’s going on, Eli’s eyes seemed to read now.
They’re afraid to let the workers in because we’re here, Jake’s
eyes responded.
Maybe they’ll somehow be able to rescue us, Eli, in an optimistic mood now, tried to telepathize.
The boys continued to sit in silence, but an aura of hope now permeated the room.
Bang!
The front door had apparently been slammed shut and there was a resounding silence throughout the apartment. It seemed that the workers had not been allowed in.
Sighing, Eli tiptoed over to the window. Thankfully, his legs were unbound, so such a walk was possible.
The heavy metal bars and frost-colored windowpane made it nearly impossible to see outside.
Still, a bit of natural light was better than none.
If only there was some way to pull the window up.
Jake approached. “The window overlooks the utility alleyway,” he whispered. “There’s not much to see out there.”
Eli shrugged. Seeing pipes and garbage bins was still better than sitting and staring at the four bare walls of the room he was in. The room was causing him to imagine all sorts of frightening things.

The window wouldn’t lift. Jake and Eli had already noted that the apartment had been escape-proofed, and the window was maddening evidence of that fact.
Eli squinted tightly, trying to somehow make out the shapes of the objects outside.
His eye muscles grew tight, but his squinting paid off as he slowly began to recognize the images beyond the window.
Jake was right. The alleyway that the window overlooked was full of pipes and garbage bins. But there was also something else out there.
A moving something.
There was a person out there and Eli felt like shouting with exuberance. If a person was indeed outside, only two flights down, then perhaps he’d be able to rescue them.
Calling out to the person was obviously impossible, as the boys’ captors would hear and immediately retaliate. Still, there had to be some way to contact the person.
Eli needed to somehow send the person a note.
The trouble was that he had neither pen nor paper on him. His and Jake’s possessions had been confiscated by their captors earlier.
Eli turned away from the window, his eyes scouring the room in the hope of finding something to send a message with.
Suddenly, the door began to move.
One of their captors was pushing it in.
Eli froze.
His hands were no longer bound by rope. He’d slipped his rope off earlier, after maneuvering it off the way that Jake had, and it was now lying several feet away from him on the floor.
Jake had at least had the foresight to keep the rope loosely wound around one of his wrists like a bracelet in case the boys’ captors returned unpredictably — as was happening now.
The door was pushed open completely and Jake finished slipping his rope over both his wrists.
Eli bit his bottom lip.
“You two,” Adolf shouted, pointing at the boys. “Both of you, follow me.”
Eli’s heart leapt into his throat as he offered up a silent prayer that his unbound hands would go unnoticed. He walked alongside a pale and frightened-looking Jake to the doorway of the room and out into the hallway.
A wide, accordion-like closet door greeted the boys.
“Get in,” Adolf barked, He pushed the boys inside, locking the door behind them.
Eli and Jake stared at each other in shock. It was dark and cramped in the closet and there was no light switch.
“He’s scared of something,” Jake whispered.
Eli nodded. A tiny drop of light was filtering in from under the accordion door and all he could think about was how claustrophobic, and scared, he was.
“This room?” He heard someone say.
“Yes. Just make it fast or we’ll call the troops in,” another voice, belonging to Adolf’s partner, responded.
Apparently, one of the workers had been granted permission to enter the apartment, after all. Maybe it was his partner outside in the utility alleyway, and they somehow needed to work in tandem, with one man in the apartment and another man outside it.
“You’d call the police troops in just because I’m taking a long time to fix some cables?” The worker sounded amused. “You must be friends with a police officer, if you can say that.”
“I didn’t mean the police troops,” Adolf’s partner began, but Adolf quickly hushed him.
“Just come this way,” Adolf instructed the worker. “The window that oversees those cables is in this room.”
The worker proceeded down the hallway, past the closet with the accordion door. Eli’s hand intuitively reached out to bang on the door, but Jake pulled him back.
“Dangerous,” he mouthed.
There was the sound of a door opening. “What’s this rope doing here?” the worker asked.
Eli froze.
His rope.
He couldn’t make out Adolf’s response, but he hoped the man wasn’t planning hi revenge.
A moment passed. A strange, sweet scent filled the air and Eli turned toward Jake in concern.
Jake, however, was eerily silent. And he also wasn’t moving.
Eli stretched his hand out toward his friend, but before he could touch him Jake suddenly slumped over.
Alarmed, Eli tried to figure out what was going on. But then he was overcome by a terrible dizziness as the strange smell continued to seep in from under the closet door.
His limbs grew limp.
Someone sprayed sleeping spray into the air, Eli thought as he drifted into a cocoon of sleep. But who was that person, and was he good or bad?
To be continued...

When my mother picked me up from school one day, she casually asked “Did you lose a notebook? Mrs Klein called to say that her boys found a notebook in the path near their house. It said your name and number in the notebook.” As far as I was concerned, I hadn’t lost a notebook. My mother continued “ They said it was a blue notebook.” It finally dawned on me that it was indeed my notebook. A day earlier I had walked to a friends house to study for an upcoming math test. My math notebook is small, and so I stuck it in the pocket of my loose leaf. On the way home, I walked through a path that connected two neighborhoods. I suddenly felt like I had heard something drop, so I checked my pockets, and it didn’t seem likely anything had dropped, so I continued walking. The next day, I didn’t need my math notebook, and so I didn’t realize that it was missing. Then Mrs Klein’s sons were walking through the path, and found my notebook laying on the ground. They opened the notebook, and found my name and number. In an amazing turn of Hashgacha, Mrs Klein knows my mother. Another amazing Hashgacha is that I normally don’t write my name and number in my notebooks, but I guess that I was once bored in class, and decided to fill out my contact information. My only notebook that had my contact information was the one that had gotten lost. Only because Hashem made me fill out my contact, was I Zoche to have my notebook returned to me.

Congratulations to our winner!
One day my father was driving me and my siblings to school. Suddenly the car got a flat tire! We pulled over to the side of the road and waited. Just then someone was passing by and saw our car parked on the side of the road. He pulled over to the side and came to see what was happening. It turned out that he knew how to fix flat tires and we were able to make it in time for school! What hashgacha pratis!

Clown Puppets
Clown Puppets
With two Adars this year there’s plenty of time to put on cute and joyful puppet shows for your younger brothers and sisters. Here’s a fun way to create a clown puppet with materials you probably have lying around your house.
• A sock (preferably a colorful one)
• Assorted felt or scraps in various colors
• Yarn
• Googly eyes
• Craft glue or a hot glue gun
• Scissors
• Markers or fabric paint (optional)
Needed:
Materials 3/6/2024 72 732.930.2500
Instructions:
Step #1
PREPARE THE SOCK
Choose a sock that will serve as the body of your puppet. A colorful sock with stripes or polka dots works well for a clown puppet. Turn the sock inside out.
Step #2
PREPARE THE ACCENTS
Use felt or fabric scraps to cut out shapes for the clown's features. Consider creating a triangular nose and accent details like a bowtie or a hat.
For the mouth, you will be need 2 somewhat oddly-shaped ovals to insert into the sock opening (see step #5). Consider decorating these oval with more fabric to form a tongue or teeth.
Step #3
GLUE THE ACCENTS ON
Glue the felt or fabric pieces onto the sock to create the clown's face.
Add yarn as hair to the top of the sock and carefully apply the googly eyes above the nose. Make sure the glue is completely dry before proceeding to the next step.
Vibes of Craft
3/6/2024 74 732.930.2500
Step #4
ADD DETAILS
If desired, use markers or fabric paint to add additional details to the clown's face, such as rosy cheeks or eyebrows.
Step #5
CREATE THE PUPPET’S MOUTH
Turn the sock right side out.
Open the top of the sock and use your hand to create a mouth shape by pinching the fabric together. This will be the opening for your hand to operate the puppet.
Glue or sew the two ovals that you created in step #2 into the opening.
Once all paint and glue is dry you can slip your hand into the sock and use your fingers to move the puppet's mouth and bring your clown puppet to life! Feel free to customize your puppet with additional accessories or decorations to make it even more unique and entertaining.
Enjoy crafting and performing with your new clown puppet!

DIVING DEEP
It’s Adar y’all and that means…Fish!
Huh? You might be saying. I thought Adar means happy, Purim, candy, costumes, and more happy.
Well, you’re right. Adar does mean all of those things. But also, something which you may not know, is that the mazel (symbol) of Adar is a fish.
And that is why we eat the head of a fish on Purim… Uh, no, wait a second, that’s Rosh Hashana! But because the mazel of Adar is a fish, that’s why we eat gummy jellyfish on Purim. Um, maybe, not quite, but we’re moving in the right direction at least!
So, because Adar’s mazel is a fish (and because there are probably no kids anywhere who don’t like gummy jellyfish) in this week’s issue we’ll be discussing many cool kinds of fish and other sea creatures out there in the world.
On a serious note, one of the real reasons the symbol of Adar is a fish is because Yidden are compared to fish.
Why? Because just as fish live in the sea, the Jewish people live in the Torah and the Torah is compared to water. Also, just as fish multiply so too, Torah increased in this month. Moshe Rabbeinu, who gave us the Torah, was born in this month and the Yidden committed to re-accept the Torah in Adar after Hashem saved them from the wicked Haman in the Purim story.

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WORLD’S COOLEST MARINE CENTERS
Have you ever dreamed of swimming with dolphins or seeing a shark up close? Well, guess what? You don’t need to know how to scuba dive to do that! Around the world, there are awesome marine centers and aquariums that bring the secrets of the ocean right to you. Let’s go on an underwater adventure to some of the coolest aquatic centers, including a special one in Eilat, Israel, to meet some of the most amazing sea creatures on the planet!
UNDERWATER OBSERVATORY MARINE PARK, EILAT, ERETZ YISROEL
Imagine stepping into a giant glass bubble and suddenly, you’re surrounded by schools of colorful fish, corals that look like they’re dancing, and even some mean-faced sharks that look a little scary until you remember that there’s a giant glass wall between you. That’s what it’s like at the Underwater Observatory Marine Park in Eilat.
To enter this underground observatory, visitors first need to cross a bridge from the coast of Eilat to the observatory tower which is situated right in the sea itself.
The observatory tower, which protrudes from the water, but whose main attraction is below sea, contains numerous steps to take visitors down into the special rooms with specially insulated glass walls that overlook the sea.
One of the coolest fish you’ll meet at this observatory is the Clownfish, so-called because… Yup! With its bright orange and white stripes it looks like the bright colors a clown might wear. But clownfish are not just adorable, they also have a superpower. They can live among the stingy anemones (sea creatures that look like flowers with tentacles that reach out and sting to catch tiny fish to eat) without getting hurt, thanks to a special layer of mucus on their skin.

MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM, CALIFORNIA, USA
Next stop, California!
The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a massive tank called the “Open Sea” exhibit where visitors can see some of the fastest and biggest fish in the ocean. Ever heard of a Sunfish? They’re creatures that are seriously weird-looking. They look like giant fish heads with fins on either side, and an adult sunfish can weigh up to 4,400 pounds — as much as a car! Now that’s heavy, especially since sunfishes’ favorite food is little jellyfish. Not the kind of candy jellyfish you get in your mishloach manos baskets. No, these are real jellyfish – small, clear wobbly sea creatures that float in the ocean and sting with their long, trailing tentacles.
OKINAWA CHURAUMI AQUARIUM, JAPAN
Flying over to Japan, the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is home to the gentle giants of the sea: Whale Sharks. Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the world, but believe it or not, they don’t bite. Instead, they swim around sucking up tiny plankton (tiny plants and animals that float in the ocean) with their snouts. At the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, there are some whale shark for visitors’ enjoyment. These creatures are like huge vacuum cleaners of the ocean. They have cool, polka-dotted skin that looks like the star-studded night sky. Stunning and awesome sightings!
THE GEORGIA AQUARIUM, ATLANTA, USA
Back in the United States, down south in Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium has one of the wildest marine animals you’ll ever see: the octopus. The octopus is an eight-armed sea creature that can change color and squirt ink. And an octopus is not a fish, by the way. It’s a mollusk, which means it’s more like a snail than a fish. These brainy invertebrates (animals without a backbone, like insects, spiders, and jellyfish) are escape artists and can squeeze through tiny spaces to reach for food or anything else they may want. They have three hearts, blue blood, and can change color to blend in with their surroundings. Now that is one seriously cool creation of Hashem! Stunning and awesome sightings!

THE GREAT BARRIER REEF AQUARIUM, AUSTRALIA
Down under in Australia, the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium gives you a sneak peek into the largest coral reef system on Earth. A coral reef system is like a busy underwater city in the ocean made up of colorful coral (sea creatures that live together in big groups, creating beautiful structures of different colors) where all sorts of marine animals live, play, and find food.
Some of the fish you’ll find at this aquarium are called blue tangs, bright blue fish with a yellow tail. These creatures love to lazily glide around the coral. Except when they’re hungry and looking for food; then you’ll find they’re quite capable of zooming around! tentacles.
DUBAI AQUARIUM & UNDERWATER ZOO, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Flying over to Japan, the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is home to the gentle giants of the sea: Whale Sharks. Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the world, but believe it or not, they don’t bite. TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
Imagine an aquarium where two huge oceans meet. That’s what’s going on at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, South Africa. This amazing aquarium contains sea creatures from both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. One such underwater animal is the Loggerhead or green sea turtle. Loggerhead and green sea turtles are usually around 3 to 4 feet, about as long as a skateboard. In Two Oceans Aquarium, you’ll also learn about the importance of saving the ocean and the animals that live in it. awesome sightings!

VANCOUVER AQUARIUM, CANADA
Guess what, kids? In Vancouver Aquarium in Canada, there’s a place where you can walk among jellyfish without getting stung!
Vancouver Aquarium has an awesome exhibit where jellyfish float all around visitors, in glass-enclosed tanks, gleaming like underwater lights. Or maybe like a kind of like glowsticks! The jellyfish use this super cool trick, called bioluminescence, to light up for different reasons like scaring off enemies, luring in a snack, or finding a jellyfish friend.
The jellyfish’s glow comes from a special glow-in-the-dark chemical reaction inside their bodies, but that’s not the only thing that’s cool about them. The way they move, by pulsing — kind of like how a heart beats — is also fantabulous to watch!
OCEANOGRÀFIC VALENCIA, SPAIN
Ever wanted to schmooze with a dolphin or race a penguin? Oceanogràfic in Valencia might be the place for you. It’s the biggest aquarium in all of Europe, with a gigantic dome where birds can fly inside and you can walk through underwater tunnels while sharks, rays, dolphins and even whales glide over your head. It’s kind of like exploring the bottom of the ocean without getting wet. (And it’s making me wonder if that’s what kriyas yam suf looked like!)
There’s an area in the aquarium called the “Antarctic” with real penguins. The area is made to look and feel like a real iceberg. You can watch goofy-looking penguins dive into the water and waddle around on the ice there.
Oceanogràfic is also one of the few aquariums in the world where you can see beluga whales. These white whales are known for their friendliness and curious nature. They often come up close and interact with people, especially in places like aquariums, where maybe they’ll play games or follow your movements through the glass.
In the wild, beluga whales are known to swim up to boats and check out the people inside, which shows just how curious they are!
But remember, even though belugas are friendly, they’re still wild animals. I wouldn’t recommend begging your mom to take one home as a pet.

NATIONAL AQUARIUM, BALTIMORE, USA
Not only does Baltimore’s National Aquarium have an amazing collection of underwater sea creatures, but it hosts a tropical rainforest as well. You start your journey among the treetops and then dive underwater to meet some cool sea animals. One of the rainforest animals that you might see when you visit is a blue poison dart frog — a tiny, bright blue, very poisonous frog. (Luckily, for you, he’ll be behind glass.) You’ll also see colorful birds only found in the tropics flying around nearly freely.
Maybe the most exciting display in this aquarium is the Living Seashore Exhibit. In this display, you can actually touch starfish (also known as sea stars), horseshoe crabs, and lots of other creatures found on the beach. And you get to do all this without worrying about how you’ll get the sand out of your toes!
Another super exciting exhibit in the Baltimore National Aquarium is its Australia display. From crocodiles to flying foxes, they have a lot of wild and exotic wildlife found “down under” in Australia. You’ll see animals you not only never saw before, but that you never even knew existed!
And once you’ve finished touring the aquarium, you can learn about their Animal Rescue program that takes care of sick or injured marine animals, like sea turtles and seals, and helps them return to the wild.
WHERE DO I SIGN UP?
Each of these magical marine centers is a doorway to new adventures and discoveries. From glowing jellyfish to chatty dolphins, to vibrant colored clownfish, and even a rainforest under water, the ocean’s got it all. Who knows? Maybe one day you’ll get to see these amazing creatures and their homes up close. Until then, keep dreaming and exploring, because the world beneath the waves is full of surprises waiting for you! And hey, if you can’t end up exploring the ocean, at least you can munch on some gummy jellyfish on Purim this Adar and pretend you’re swimming with the real ones!

Great white shark
קראַש טייוו טיערג
The Great White Shark is true-to-name: the largest killer shark. They can reach a length of over 25 feet and weigh quite more than 7,000 lbs!
With their menacing rows of razor sharp, large teeth they tear apart everything that comes their way. But not only animals are included in their menu: they will attack people swimming on the shores all over the world and even ships. However, usually the attacks aren’t fatal.

Being an extremely dangerous fish which lives deep underwater, not much information is known about the great white shark.
They have an enormous body and are very well camouflaged for hunting. They are white on the bottom while their top half is grey (sometimes also brownish or a shade of blue).
From above they’re invisible because they blend in with the dark color of the water, and they’re undetectable from below because the white reflects the light from the ocean surface.
Like other sharks, they have a few rows of teeth one after the other. When a tooth falls out, a new one immediately moves into the space. The teeth are wide, sharp, jagged (see picture left) and long - sometimes up to 3 inches! They have a bite-power of over 18,000 neutons! They can swim quite fast, especially so when they are poised to attack. They will swim 25 mph and with power ‘breach’ - leap out of the water (2 pictures left). They can jump 10 feet above the surface trying to capture their prey.

Hashem created the great white shark with special sensors. These sensors are so sensitive that they detect the slightest vibration of a living creature in the water even very far away.
The great white shark isn’t picky and will eat whatever comes his way: fish, dolphins, whales, sea lions, fur seals, turtles and even some species of ocean birds. In some instances they were found attacking and devouring crocodiles!
A scientist once observed a great white shark attack a mammoth elephant-seal, which weighs approximately 4,000 lbs.!
They don’t have natural predators, besides for the ‘killer whale’ which will sometimes attack.
Nowadays a popular tourist attraction is ‘cage-diving’. You submerge into the water in a fenced cage from which you can clearly view the great white sharks swimming nearby (see left).
How are the sharks lured over? They attach chunks of fish around the cage or suspended from ropes and that attracts the sharks.

Gedolei Yisrael from All Over the World Converge on Vienna for Historic Inaugural
Amud HaYomi Siyum
100
Years After Daf HaYomi Inaugurated in Vienna, a New “Yomi” Takes Klal Yisrael by a Storm
By: Chaim Gold
“This historic maamid transpiring now, in a place where history was previously made, is a maamid that continues the legacy of Torah bequeathed to us right here by the Chofetz Chaim, the Gerer Rebbe, Rav Chaim Ozer, the Chortkover Rebbe and Rav Meir Shapiro, who established the Daf HaYomi in Vienna one-hundred years ago. This is the place where Klal Yisrael came together in unity, the olam hayeshivos and the olam hachassidus joining forces to increase kavod haTorah.”
“Just look at how many thousands of people have begun to learn the Amud HaYomi! It is my hope that more and more will join for Masechta Shabbos.”
Those words were the beginning of the seminal speech of HaGaon HaRav Dovid Cohen, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Chevron at the Sofiensäle Hall in Vienna, the same hall where the Knessiah Gedolah was made in the same city, Vienna, where the Daf HaYomi was established one hundred years ago.
The maamad of the siyum attended by leading senior Gedolei Yisrael, Ashkenazim, Sefardim and Chasssidim of all types, all unified under the Torah banner of Dirshu, was a deeply emotionally and inspiring maamad of chizuk. In addition to the actual maamad of the siyum, which was the heartbeat of the whirlwind journey, powerful tefillah rallies were held at the tziunim of the Chasasm Sofer and the Ksav Sofer in Pressburg, and at the tziunim of the famed Chortkover Rebbe and HaGaon HaRav Yosef Engel in the old beis hakevaros in Vienna and the next day at the tziun of Rav Shayele of Keristier.
The Siyum at the Sofiensäle Hall
Rav Cohen’s drasha along with those of numerous Gedolei HaTorah V’Hachassidus, Ashkenazim and Sefardim was but one highlight of a historic journey filled with highlight after highlight and climax after climax.
The palatial Sofiensäle Hall in downtown Vienna filled up quickly and then… it happened. The orchestra began to play as the assemblage rose, craning their necks to see the Gedolei Yisrael entering the hall, being welcomed and then walking down the regal red carpet in the center of the hall: Rav Dovid Hofstedter, shlita, Nasi of Dirshu, was flanked by HaGaon HaRav Dovid Cohen, shlita, on one side and HaGaon HaRav Chaim Peretz Berman, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Ponovezh, on the other. Behind them, walking one by one were numerous Gedolei Torah and Chassidus.
The majestic hall with its high ceiling and balconies, ornate architecture, with the three-tiered dais graced by Gedolei haTorah and prominent rabbanim from throughout Europe and beyond, provided the most fitting backdrop for the royal nature and historic significance of the event.
Rav Avraham Salim, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Me’or HaTorah and a senior Sephardic Gadol as well as by Rav Yaakov Meir Stern, Dayan of Zichron Meir pointed who out three distinct advantages of lomdei Amud HaYomi.
Firstly, when learning Amud HaYomi, there is built-in time for chazarah. Secondly, for those who find the Daf HaYomi too much, the Amud HaYomi provides a chelek in every part of Torah and thirdly, bnei haYeshivos who are accustomed to learning at a slower pace, can afford the time to look into meforshim.

the renowned Rebetzin Aidel Miller from Yerushalyim
Letter of recommendation from ל״צז גרעבנייש
Rebetzin Aidel Miller is a granddaughter of the known Rabbi Yakov Yosef Herman ל״צז, who did much to strengthen Yiddishkeit in America.
The Rebetzin became known over the years for helping people with difficulties through special Segulos and prayers from holy sources, to fortify the faith and Bitachon of those in need of a Yeshua.
Rebetzin Miller is also an expert in using the segula of “Blei Gissin” (pouring of lead).
This Segulah is mentioned in the Sefer קדצ חמצ and other Seforim. This Segulah is known in Klal Yisroel for many generations and Mekubalim have given their approval of this Segulah
May Hashem grant her much Siyata Dishmaya to continue her work, and may Hashem the healer of the broker heart, heal all those in need of help.
Removing Ayin Hora through “Blei Gissin” is a known Segulah to aid with issues of health, Shidduchim, child bearing, Parnassa, anxiety and other difficulties.
Rebetzin Miller is blessed with tremendous Siyata Dishmaya and has had the Zechus to be the right Shliach to help and be Mechazek Klal Yisroel for close to 40 years.
“A year ago a lady came to the Rebetzin as she did not have children.
The Rebetzin gave her a big brocha, did the blei gissen and told her she will have twins.
A year later she gave birth to twins. ”
“A man called the Rebetzin as his daughter had to go to the emergency hospital. The Rebetzin calmed the father down and did the blei gissen with tefillahs, and said she has nothing and will be going home the same night safe. It happened that the doctors found nothing and sent her home safely. ”
“A girl from Brooklyn NY called and was having a terrible time finding her soul mate. The Rebetzin did the blei gissen and told her to daven certain tehillims.
A month later she became engaged and is today happily married. ”
