‘Tis the season Sometimes you just sit back and find that everything is right with the world. We have a tendency to pick at various local issues but look around, feel the change in the air as autumn approaches, and breathe in a great lungful of contentment. Aren’t we lucky to living here with four distinctly beautiful seasons - all of them spectacular. Each time we come round to a new season, I think to myself “this is my favourite!” Now, I remember that autumn IS my favourite. It could be argued that March is the best month of the year, an extension of summer, except there’s a change in the air. Now it’s April and the colours change by the day: poplars first, fiery totems shooting upwards: green to gold, gold to amber, with molten rusts and reds ripening by the week. Even winter (which I usually approach with dread) once it is upon us and the fire starts roaring and the air turns blue, is ok. There’s a novelty in getting up in the dark and lighting the fire straight away, bundling up in layers of merino, puffas and boots, braving the cold to warm the car which is frozen shut. Clear blue days emerge from the cold, and if we’re lucky, we might get a snow day or two. Most of us eagerly anticipate the arrival of skiing, which banishes the dullness of late May and June. We agonise over what type of winter will come this year, will it be hard? Soft? Snowy? Rainy? It’s El Nino; it’s La Nina… Europe had a cold one; we will too… the conjecturing doesn’t cease until October when we suddenly realise it’s over. You know spring has arrived when you no longer want to ski. Suddenly, the slush holds little appeal as the danger of injury looms. The blossom pops out and the daffodils poke their happy little heads out of the ground. The renewed green that appears in the trees and grass is so fresh and new, you can’t imagine it ever getting tired and dulling with heat exhaustion. Suddenly, pretty greens, pinks, yellows and whites are everywhere. You know you’ve made it when daylight savings arrives and the first barbecue is fired up keenly. Summer is the great mystery. How excited we all get over a season of pure uncertainty! In good years, we get a heatwave in November: all going well, it returns in February, as withered children return to school. The grass crunches under jandals as the hills scorch to tawny brown. Heat radiates like a bar heater, the wind blows and dries everything to a crisp. It’s best not to discuss December and January, probably the most anticipated, yet disappointing months. Don’t count on a dry camping trip, a calm day on the lake or even double figures on the thermometer! Pack jandals and boots, togs and jackets, jeans and shorts.

Nothing lasts for long; the year is this ever-revolving cycle over and over again. There’s always something new to look forward to. If you are one of the many people living in the Wakatipu eagerly awaiting winter, don’t panic it will come soon enough. But right now, before moving on to the next, get your camera out and enjoy the golden amber molten reds of autumn. Lucy Hunt Writers’ Relief
