WELCOME TO QUEENSTOWN
Kia Ora! Welcome to Queenstown. Queenstown is like a miniature raving city, it’s a small town on ‘roids and you’re gonna love it. It’s a highly condensed party zone, a bubble with scenic mountains and a thriving international community. It’s a bit like New York. But instead of the Stature of Liberty we’ve got a statue of a dude called Rees and a sizeable sheep. Okay... maybe it’s not like New York. Queenstown is a cruel mistress, sometimes she loves you, sometimes she gives you hell. But don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through the first few weeks. We both arrived here with a car full of baggage and a few hopes and dreams and now we’re long-time residents with a few tricks up our sleeves. That’s our first tip – however long you plan on being in Queenstown, double it. You’ll hear the same old story again and again form locals; their six-month stint in Queenstown became a six-year-long rollercoaster ride. For your first three months in town, expect to get in trouble at work because you’ll be out on the town heaps. Harness your ability to work hungover and always show up no matter how shitty you feel because rent isn’t cheap when you’ve been sacked for throwing up on the boss or not showing up at all... Master the stir-fry, collect bar stickers and if you meet someone who was ACTUALLY born and bred in Queenstown, shake their hand for good luck (they’re like flipping unicorns around here). There’s a lot of diversity in Queenstown, it’s a melting pot of cultures! Another top tip is to keep you friend count high. Queenstown is a transient place and your best friend today might be gone in a few months. Also, for all its worldly feel, this is still a small town and it pays to be nice and not be a dick. Don’t be a big city Tinder player in a small alpine town. Keep your good karma count high too. Get involved in the local community, interweave yourself into the fabric of Queenstown. Stitch yourself in by joining a sports team, getting involved in an organisation or by volunteering. If you want to stick around for longer than the winter season, this is a must. Show Queenstown a little commitment and you’re more likely to get it back. And if you really want to stay in the loop with everything Queenstown, check out our TV show, LWB TV. It’s Queenstown’s very own, slightly alternative, channel. We do a regular run-down of events, interviews with local characters and #AlmostJournalism pieces covering hot topics around town. Who knows, if you stay here long enough, we might interview you! You can find us on Facebook and YouTube; give it a watch.

FINDING A JOB
FINDING THE RIGHT JOB
This region is often considered the Southern Hemisphere’s playground, so it’s hard to knuckle down and work when you’re here for a good time, not a long time. However, unless you’re a millionaire, you’re going to need a job to get you through the season. To get one, there’s a few things you’ll need first: • A valid work visa • New Zealand Bank Account • IRD Number – this is a unique tax number, apply for it ASAP via: myir.ird.govt.nz – it should take two days to arrive if you apply online and have opted to receive it via email. Note that you’ll need proof of your visa and your NZ bank account to get your IRD number.
The Hunt
Most people know you can grab a copy of the Lakes Weekly Bulletin on a Tuesday morning with all the latest job vacancies. But few know it comes out online on a Monday evening; make the most of that
extra time and head to lwb.co.nz or download the Queenstown NZ app. Another way to get ahead is to upload your CV to local job matchmaking site jobfix.co.nz. That way, employers can choose you before the job is advertised to anyone else. Of course, you can also pound the pavements with a stack of CVs (Hint: MC Internet, O’Connell’s mall has a print service). Try to hit off-peak times as a restaurant manager probably won’t want to chat to you mid-way through a busy lunch service. Working at a temping agency like Addstaff or Tradestaff is another good way to get a job right away. You can sound out a permanent job through them, or work as a temp for the whole season. If you’re thinking about sticking around after your visa has expired, start talking to your employer about sponsorship. Without a firm job offer you’ll have no chance – unless you marry a Kiwi.

GETTING A BANK ACCOUNT
7
GETTING A BANK ACCOUNT You’ll need a New Zealand bank account to get your IRD number. This is a unique tax number which enables you to get paid (yippee!) Most major banks like ANZ, Wespac and KiwiBank have branches in Queenstown. You’ll need to pop in with the following: • Proof of a New Zealand address – This can be a rental agreement or even your hostel’s address (ask the hostel manager first!) • Your passport • Your overseas Tax Identification number – Depending on where you’re from, this might be called a national identity, social security, personal or tax number. • Copy of your working visa • Cash (ten bucks is fine) Most banks offer a free EFTPOS card (that’s a bit like a cash card), but you’ll need to pay an annual fee (around $10) to upgrade to a Visa or MasterCard which will allow you to spend online.

WINTER 2018
WHERE TO EAT
One of the few downsides to living in a world-famous resort, is that everyone else wants to live here too. There’s a housing shortage in Queenstown so finding a room can be a pain in the arse. But, never fear! There are options out there. Hostels are usually pretty full, but there may be an opportunity to work for your accommodation. For a few hours’ cleaning work per day, you’ll get a free bed in a staff room. It’s not ideal in the long run, though. Neither is camper van-ing or freedom camping – this is banned in most parts of Queenstown and to be honest, you’d need to be a polar bear to survive winter in an unheated van. The best option is hunting for a room in a shared house. Most rooms go for around $200 - $400 dependant on size and location. It’s cheaper to share a room with a friend or partner if you can and many room prices include power and internet (but it’s good to check). You can search for rooms in the Lakes Weekly Bulletin or on assorted ‘buy, sell and let’ groups on Facebook. Alternatively, ask around at the pub – sometimes, it’s who you know, not what you know. You can also find whole apartments or houses through local accommodation providers like QAC; this is a good option if you’ve arrived with a group of mates and are planning to stay long-term. Expect to pay $500+ for a two-bedroom furnished flat and $800+ for a three or more bedroom house. Note that if you go through formal channels, you’ll have to sign a one-year lease and will probably need to arrange your own internet connection etc.
ACCOMODATION
HOW TO FIND A HOME
Many rooms will require a bond of about one month’s rent in advance. Make sure you get a rental agreement, even if it’s just an informal one, it’ll really help if things go wrong!
WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE?
Fernhill – It’s cold but cheap, has a chip shop, and you’ll get buns of steel walking up that hill. Queenstown Hill and Goldfield Heights – Epic views and conveniently placed between Frankton and central QT. Frankton – Close to the supermarkets, but away from the bars. Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate – Aka nappy valley. Chilled, but you’ll need a car or bus pass to get around.
Arthur’s Point – Neat community with an en suite ski field (Coronet Peak).

VIRGIN’S GUIDE
WINTER 2018
KAI TIME Hungry after a day in the snow? No worries – Queenstown is chocka with great restaurants and cafes with surprisingly good value. New Zealand is known for its café culture and it’s no different here; try a hipster charcoal latte at Yonder or knock back a strong cup of joe at Joe’s Garage. For the terminally hungover, Red Rock’s $10 all-day breakfast is the only cure. When it comes to burgers, you’ve got to do a Ferg burger at least once, but if you’re on a budget, check out Public – you can get 2 for 1 burgers simply by posting a selfie! Italian restaurant Bella Cucina is also offering a great ski season deal, serving up dough balls, two bowls of pasta, a pizza and salad for just $65. Miss Lucy’s, a rooftop bar above Juicy Snooze, is another pizzeria with great views and brews! For a small(ish) town, Queenstown punches above its weight with vegan and vegetarian options (hint: tap into this crowd on Facebook via @QueenstownVegans). Check out Italian restaurant Farelli’s super tasty vegan menu. Meat connoisseurs on the other hand should head straight to Coalfire where meaty dishes are plentiful and there’s live music Thursday – Saturday. If tequila and burritos are your thing, Sombreros is your new home and those who like sake and ramen will love Tanoshi. As well as great restaurants, Queenstown has a bar for every kind of drinker. Looking for good drinks deals? Head to 1876 or Surreal. Chilled pub vibes? Pub on Wharf or The World Bar. Dancing in the dark? Zephyr, Rhinos, Barmuda or Bungalow. Like quirky live music? It’s got to be The Sherwood. Smith’s is the go-to for craft beers and Winnie’s is our trademark loose party bar. Have fun, but don’t be a dick. Befriend the security staff and head for a pie at Night ‘n Day if you’re too trashed to enter the bar; New Zealand’s drinking rules are stricter than countries like the UK and you’re better off having a pie break than a conviction which could get you booted out of NZ.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW A
Queenstown’s been a kick-ass ski resort since Coronet Peak first opened with a single rope-tow back in 1947. You’ll be pleased to know that facilities have been significantly upgraded since then...
VIRGIN’S GUIDE
WINTER 2018

W ABOUT THE SNOW The Mountains Coronet Peak boasts three high-speed chair lifts, three learner conveyor lifts (aka the ‘magic carpets’) and a tow bar. It’s got a terrain park and the longest run is the M1 at 2.1km. Heidi’s Hut, accessible via the tow bar, is a popular on-mountain hangout – it’s got great local beers, Amisfield wine and possibly the best muffins on the snow. Coronet is the only place in NZ you can ski beneath the stars – night skiing is on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 4pm – 9pm. The sun goes down, the lights go on, fire pits are lit and the DJ pumps up the volume. Don’t miss the three big Night Ski Parties this year; 30th June, 25th July and 8th September with top DJs Aroha, MC Tali, King Kapisi and Che Fu (as Hedlok). The other local ski area is The Remarkables. It’s got a flash new base building and is known for its terrain parks and epic off-piste technical terrain for those willing to work for it. There’s seven terrain parks and four chairlifts. But it’s not all about the technical stuff – there’s fantastic beginner terrain at The Remarks accessible via three conveyor lifts, so it’s a great place to start if you’re a snow virgin.
Snow Virgins Never skied before? Don’t know about pizza wedges and board edges? No worries. Our local mountains are a great place to learn to ski or snowboard. You can rent gear at the mountain base, though you’ll need your own ski jacket and pants, goggles and gloves (hint: check out the Salvation Army for cheap snow-wear).
Both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables offer a few snazzy packages to get you started. They run from one day ($150) to the ultimate four day learn to ski or ride package, Intro to Snow ($599 outside of school holidays or $699 anytime). This includes rental gear, lift passes and two, two-hour lessons each day with an experienced and qualified instructor. At best, you’ll be a pro in no time, at worst, you’ll have a great excuse to après ski with new mates. Sounds like a win-win!
How to Get There Coronet Peak is just a 20-minute (16km) drive from central QT and The Remarkables is 40 minutes (24km) away. It helps if you have a four-wheel drive vehicle and snow chains. Alternatively, hop on the ski bus from behind the Station Building on Duke Street. They run every 20 minutes from 8am until 11.30am (noon for Coronet Peak) and return as they fill up, from 1.30pm onwards. For night skiing, buses leave on the hour from 4pm to 7pm and return on the half-hour from 5.30pm to 9.30pm. Hitchhiking might see you standing in the cold a fair bit (there’s no friends on a powder day), so some clever buggers came up with snowpool.org – an online tool to request and arrange car shares.

OUT OF THE BUBBLE
OUT OF THE BUBBLE Queenstown is a bubble. Hemmed in by the lake, the mountains and the ski bum vibes, it’s essential you get out of town for a day or two and see what New Zealand is really like. Cromwell, with its historic buildings, orchards and quirky country pubs is just an hour away. The Gate should be your first stop – an information centre, café, restaurant and cracking pub all in one. Don’t be fooled by the town’s sleepy demeanour, there’s a surprising range of activities on offer from wine tours to paintballing.
Glenorchy is at the north end of Lake Wakatipu. It’s the starting point for heaps of walking tracks and boasts an epic ecofriendly café and campground called Camp Glenorchy. Then there’s Gibbston Valley, known for its unique combination of vineyards and scenic cycle trails. Sample the best at the Gibbston Tavern, or make a weekend of it at the classy Kinross Cottages.
UNBELIEVABLE, BUT TRUE.
THERE’S LIFE BEYOND QUEENSTOWN
Hunting lodge themed Five Stags Bar and Restaurant has evolved from the need to provide honest, hard-working locals and visitors from Queenstown with a welcoming, family friendly place to grab a cold pint, a glass of wine or a great feed and share stories about their day or week. GETTING AROUND
GETTING AROUND There’s heaps of ways to get around and top of the list is Queenstown’s new public bus service, Orbus. Rides are just $5 each way, or $2 per ride if you get a Go Card. Go Cards cost $5 and are available from the airport, the Camp Street kiosk and on board. You can top them up with cash at the same locations. Savy is an on-demand ride-sharing app that works a little like a communal taxi. There’s also a smorgasbord of taxi services, independent taxis and taxi apps like TakeMe and Uber in Queenstown. Ask nicely for the local’s rate! Hitchhiking is a cheap and interesting way to travel too. Play it safe by snapping a picture of the licence plate before you get in and send it to a friend.
