There is nothing quite like an election. Whether it be the general election or a local election, it provides our community with the opportunity to play a part in democracy. One aspect where local elections struggle to compare with general elections though is voter turnout. At the last election, only 54.1% of eligible voters in the Queenstown Lakes District took part and voted. This was up about 8% on the previous election in 2013 and I would encourage those of you who didn’t vote last time to make sure you do this year. Whether your priorities are water quality or infrastructure in your area, the amount you pay in rates or many other issues ongoing in the area, the only way to ensure your priorities are covered is to vote. Of the three mayoral candidates, or 10 Queenstown candidates, or six Wanaka candidates, some will share your priorities, others may not. The key is to know who they are and what they stand for, and their election profiles will give you an understanding of this. If you want to know more, multiple public meetings are going on throughout the district which provides the opportunity to questions the candidates more in-depth. Who knows, you may even give them something more to think about!

Kidsfirst Wakatipu Kindergarten celebrated their 30th Birthday Celebration on Friday: Ken Gousmett (on the establishment committee of the kindergarten); Sally Hogg (who also celebrated 30 years of teaching at the Kindergarten) and Willa Black (who is Ken’s granddaughter & the youngest child currently attending) (Photo: Kidsfirst Wakatipu Kindergarten)

What I do know is you need to have your say, because if you don’t the person who also has the same priorities as you may not be voted in. It is the old cliché of if you don’t vote, you cannot criticise, because how is that fair? It also pays to remember there are still countries in the world where they do not have the opportunity or right to vote at all. In others, although they have elections, voters are none the wiser as to what they are actually voting for. Surveys show with local elections the reason people do not vote is they aren’t interested, or they don’t have enough information and in some cases, they are too busy. I would encourage all of these people to make the time, find out more and get interested. Local elections only occur every three years, so if you don’t have your say now, it’s a long time before you will have your next opportunity. If we compare not having the right to vote with not choosing to exercise that right, I think we need to remember how lucky we are to be able to vote. Voting packs will be arriving any day now – take the time to vote and play your part in democracy.

Run, rabbit, run free!

I feel so very fortunate to live in the Queenstown Lakes area, surrounded by the beautiful outdoors. We are all passionate about maintaining and improving our environment. In fact, I think we pride ourselves on looking after our surroundings. Clean air, open spaces, pristine lakes and rivers... and rabbits. Rabbits everywhere. Our wonderful walks and cycleways are being taken over by the rabbits – their burrows are seriously compromising the land, evidenced by the copious burrows throughout our green areas. And they don’t stop there. They are invading our back yards, living under our decks, destroying our plants and lawns.

What is the Council doing to address this? I know that rabbit control is complex, and best practice is believed to be a combination of baiting and shooting. Not easy. But not impossible. My understanding is that Council is doing neither of these things. Are they doing anything at all? Please someone tell me that they are? Looking at a recent breakdown of our rates, it appears not. We have an array of charges, ranging from recreation and event charges to uniform annual general charges... Where is the allowance for pest control?? The rabbit population continues to grow, Council continues to do nothing.

Response from an ORC Spokesperson

landowners are required to control them on their own properties. Active control methods include poisoning, shooting and installing rabbit-proof fencing, and many landowners are already doing these things well. It’s essential that landowners undertake control measures to complement viruses and the efforts of their neighbours.

Feral rabbits are the number one pest in Otago. They are famed breeders, able to rebound quickly from control pressures, and they compete with farm animals for pasture and crop and cause land degradation. They can have long-term impacts on water qualityby causing soil erosion-and indigenous biodiversity. Rabbits are included in ORC’s current and new Pest Plan for sustainable control, and

breeding like rabbits.

Biocontrols like the RHDV K5 virus released last year have had varying rates of success across the region, and cannot be seen as a silver bullet solution to the rabbit problem

Caltex – Example of the most efficient distribution business. After the Saudi oil facilities were blown up last weekend and the price of the remaining crude skyrocketed it took Caltex only 3 days to buy, ship, refine and truck the new supplies from Saudi Arabia to Queenstown in order to increase the price at the pump dramatically. Between Saturday and Tuesday the price in Gorge Road went from $2.20 a

litre to $2.33 in line with the increase in bulk pricing, surely Caltex and shortly after the other outlets didn’t take cynical advantage of Queenstown motorists (read hostages). As a side note now the price of crude went I haven’t noticed a similar decline this week. Am I too cynical or a just a realist? Come ON!!

RE: Ripped jeans. I don’t get it. I would now consider myself on my way to old fogey-ism.. why? Because the onthe-street fashion trends I see now are none that I would partake in. I would just look odd.. However, I would never pass judgement on what the young ones choose to wear or their reasons for wearing them. Its their prerogative, as it was ours when in the 70’s and 80’s my parents (and their generation) judged me for wearing stonewash supertapered jeans or growing a

mullet. I agree with Keanu, people (other oldish fogeys) should worry about their own problems rather than pass judgement on young people’s fashion. How do you think it makes me feel to see my generation wearing walking socks and sandles.. together.. at the same time! It seems we have out-grown our ability to understand what is cool anymore and I’m happy with that. Just let the young ones be.

Vote Now! lwb.co.nz Will you be attending the Queenstown Climate Strike this Friday?

Last week’s editorial on recycling had some comments which require clarification. Reprocessing of our glass in Auckland • 130 tonnes of glass from Queenstown and Wanaka have been sent to OI in Auckland for reprocessing into glass bottles and jars. More glass is at the bunkers in Christchurch, ready to go to Auckland once another shipping container is full. Heavily contaminated glass • If a truckload of glass recycling is too heavily contaminated to be manually handled at the bunkers, it will be sent to landfill so that the rest of our glass will meet the recycling quality standards. • 4 truckloads of Queenstown glass contaminated by rubbish and mixed recycling have been sent to landfill since the service started on 1 July. • 1 loader bucket of glass from Wanaka contaminated by mirror and window-glass has been sent to landfill. • Council and Waste Management will carry out audits targeting the most contaminated neighbourhoods first. This will make sure that people doing a good job with their recycling are not negatively impacted by neighbours who aren’t looking after their recycling. Clarification was received from QLDC which is printed above.

During Mental Health Awareness month, Deborah Coburn will be holding the Teenage Girls Day Out and Women on The Move seminars. Deborah has been presenting these courses for over the past 20 years. With a focus on building confidence and selfesteem, it’s a great programme that teaches valuable skills to counter the negative messages young woman are surrounded by in today’s technology driven world. The day is spent with the morning enhancing inner confidence, the programme then given the participants the opportunity to shine on the outside as well. The Crew Styling team take over for the afternoon, hosting a makeover session of Hair and Makeup. Deborah takes a deportment and breathing session. Then a photo shoot with Still Vision Photography is the finishing touch to a transformative day out. One recent participant had this to say: “I really enjoyed the course and I got a lot of helpful information and tools out of it. The hair and makeup was so much fun. I felt really confident afterward and getting the pictures was really fun.” The Teenage Girls Day Out also gives businesses the opportunity to sponsor young women in the community for the daylong seminar, a fantastic way to give back to the community and acknowledge Mental Health Awareness week. Collective Courses sponsor young women through the Wakatipu Youth Trust. Deborah has always wanted to reach people and has a passion for mindful living and creating a life which brings joy. She offers seminars which are relatable and informative with practical everyday tools included. Training in personal deportment and grooming as well as being a qualified NLP practitioner (Neuro and Language skills) combine with Deborah’s skills as a business woman which has enabled her to deliver courses that can produce major change in people’s lives. “My main driving force is to reach people that don’t realise that with the right life skills, they can change their lives and develop better relationships in all aspects of their lives.” The next Girls Day Out seminar is on 30th September For more information & to get your ticket visit: www.collectivecourses.co.nz

It’s Saturday night and I’m very excited to be going up the gondola to the Skyline AGM. It might not be as exciting as it was when I was a teenager in my last year at Wakatipu High School as I’m going with my elderly husband and even more elderly dad. In my younger wilder years, host responsibility and drunken driving weren’t “THINGS” . I don’t remember if I told my parents I was going there - I probably lied and said I was going to do homework with friends. They would probably have thought I couldn’t afford it but clever old Skyline did a special Sunday night deal for locals - $2 got you the gondola ride up and back AND a free alcoholic drink. Drunken tourists were very happy to buy us 17 year old girls further posh drinks like Kahlua and milk - such fun!!. Sometimes the band would announce that anyone under 20 might like to hide away as the only policeman (the terrifying Sergeant Moloney) looking after all of Queenstown, Wanaka, Glenorchy and Gibbston was heading up in the gondola. We’d have to run outside and shiver in our small dresses for what felt like hours till he went away. Then after our night of dancing and drinking, we’d all head down and hop into cars without seatbelts or airbags and race each other home on icy roads. Oh, and go to school the next morning.

How on earth did we survive? and how do terrible things happen on beautiful sunny days like today? I just heard the horrible news that Anita Graf has died in a skiing accident - she was often up the Skyline with us living that fun and dangerous life. I took a photo of her last night dressed up as a cowgirl off to a linedancing party and she was so happy. Big hugs to all your beautiful family, Anita and hope wherever you are there is fabulous skiing and a lot of fun parties. However, I really doubt that it can be better than life in the Wakatipu Basin - especially in spring - I’ll always think of you when I see daffodils now.

Spring is definitely in the air - head to Arrowtown and see what a group of local floral artists have done - it’s a riot of blossom and it will be well worth checking out the Spring Flower Show there on Friday - as well as all the cut flower entries, there are classes for baking and children (do not bake the children!) and the bring and buy sales tables will be groaning with bargains.

If you aren’t a member of ACAS already , pick up the Spring Arts Festival programme at the Lakes District Museum. I wish there was something I DIDN’T want to go to...

This time, we got nan to give you a rark up

Cromwell celebrates spring By Marion Low, Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group Cromwell, Otago – As the days become longer and the temperatures start to rise, Cromwell is getting ready for another summer with a jampacked spring calendar. Cromwell Street Party and Fireworks Held in the Cromwell Heritage Precinct, the Street Party and Fireworks event is a delight for young and old. There will be heaps of entertainment and plenty of delicious food to enjoy from 5 pm, and a magnificent fireworks display over the Kawarau once it gets dark at around 9 pm. Cromwell Half Marathon The Cromwell Half Marathon, 10k and Teams Relay is one of the most scenic runs in New Zealand, taking athletes around the shores of beautiful Lake Dunstan. This is a family-friendly event that is suitable for runners of all levels, and forms part of the Subway Cromwell Summer Series. Speedway Blossom parade followed by evening Burnout Comp There are times when good news becomes even better news. Not only will speedway race cars be part of this Saturday’s Alexandra Blossom Grand Procession, the evening’s $1500 Burnout competition at Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell is already attracting some 20 competitors from places as far away as the Hawkes Bay. “The enthusiastic response by crowds lining Centennial Avenue last year really spurred us on to having speedway classes like sprintcars, saloons, six shooters and youth ministocks again be part of the Grand Procession,” says speedway promoter Jason Scott. “And after so many people turned up at Central Motor Speedway in Sandflat Road for last year’s Blossom Festival Burnout how could we not put on another tyre screeching, engine revving, exhaust bellowing, smoking hot show. “Besides having so many competitors ready to drop their clutches and stomp on the accelerator on our skid pad, we’ll be handing out free gate entry passes as the procession makes its way along Centennial Avenue. Be sure to be roadside for the 11.45am start time as we’re among the first in the procession. “Again this year, we’ve been careful not to get in the way of the Blossom Festival programme by starting track action and burnout from 4.30pm. Gates will be opening at 4pm for those who want to park trackside. Race cars from the parade and many more will be kicking up the clay on the speedway track and there’s a big welcome for visitors to the pits to check out the cars and meet drivers and crew. “Further great news for anyone reading this who wants to burn rubber without the risk of being slapped with a fine and loss of license for more than two seconds of ‘sustained loss of traction’ is we’ll be taking late entries on the night. We’re pretty much open to any vehicle from specialised burnout cars through hot rods, classic American and Aussie sixes and V8’s to modern cars. An entry form is on the Downloads page of www.centralmotorspeedway.co.nz or can be filled in on arrival in the pits. “For the 2019-20 season we’ve put together a full on calendar. Look at October alone. We’ve this Saturday’s Blossom Festival Process and Burnout followed by our Bathurst Funday on the 12th and the opening meeting on the 26th. A special feature of this meeting will be round one of the Southern Sprintcar Series that will be run in a way to double the excitement of sprintcar racing.”

FICTION PICKS

Whatever it takes

Inland

(F CLE, All branches)

(F OBR, All branches)

The latest thriller from kiwi author Paul Cleave. When seven-year-old Alyssa is kidnapped, Deputy Noah Harper decides he will do it what it takes to find her… but that means crossing lines he cannot back from. Finding the girl safe isn’t enough to stop Noah from losing everything – his job, his wife and his home in Acacia Pines. He’s told that if he comes back he’ll be put in jail and left to rot. Now 12 years later Alyssa is missing again and her father demands Noah honour the promise he made to her all those years ago… that he would never let anything bad happen to her again. To find her, Noah must head back to the Pines and face the past...

In the parched, lawless lands of the Arizona Territory in 1893, two lives unfold. Nora awaits the return of the men in her life—her husband, who has gone in search of water, and her elder sons, who have vanished after an explosive argument. Nora is biding her time with her youngest son, who is convinced that a mysterious beast stalks the land around their home. Meanwhile, Lurie is a former outlaw and a man haunted by ghosts. He sees lost souls who want something from him, and he finds reprieve from their longing in an unexpected relationship that inspires a momentous expedition across the West. The way in which Lurie’s death-defying trek at last intersects with Nora’s plight is the surprise and suspense of this brilliant novel.

Giraffe is Left Out: a book about feeling bullied

Paul Cleave

Robert Macfarlane (551.447 MCFA QTN, ATWN, WKA, GLEN)

Underland is an epic exploration of the Earth’s underworlds as they exist in myth, literature, memory and the land itself. In this much-anticipated sequel to his international bestseller The Old Ways, Robert Macfarlane takes us on an extraordinary voyage into our relationship with darkness, burial, and our planet’s past and future. Global in its geography and written with great lyricism and power, Underland speaks powerfully to our present moment. From its remarkable opening pages to its deeply moving conclusion, it is a journey into wonder, loss, fear and hope. At once ancient and urgent, this is a book that will change the way you see the world.

Sue Graves and Trevor Denton (CPIC G ATWN, CROM & WKA)

When Leopard arrives at Jungle School, Giraffe doesn’t want to include him. Now Leopard is having a birthday party, and Giraffe isn’t invited. Can the two of them learn to become friends after all? This series introduces children to different emotions and behaviour. The “Behaviour Matters” series are all set in the jungle, with animal characters reflecting typical behaviour traits often seen in young children. They’re great books for adults to read to children, each title includes a couple of pages of suggestions for discussion starters relating to the book’s topic. There’s 10 titles currently available in this series in our different branches – remember children’s book reserves are free. Several new titles in this series are due to be published soon.

Monty Lyman

(612.79 LYM ATWN, QTN)

Providing a cover for our delicate and intricate bodies, the skin is our largest and fastest growing organ. We see it, touch it and live in it every day. It’s a habitat for a mesmerizingly complex world of micro-organisms and physical functions that are vital to our health and our survival. It’s also one of the first things people see about us and is crucial to our sense of identity. And yet how much do we really know about it? Through the lenses of science, sociology and history, Dr Monty Lyman leads us on a journey across our most underrated and unexplored organ and reveals how the skin is far stranger and more complex than you’ve ever imagined.

General knowledge genius!: a quiz encyclopedia to boost your brain Peter Chrisp

(CNF 793.73 GEN, ATWN & WKA)

Children won’t be able to resist the General Knowledge Genius brainbusting challenge. For every topic, pages are packed with eye-popping pictures - but do you know what they show? With three levels of difficulty, the challenge gets harder as you work your way from Starter, to Challenger, and finally the truly tricky Genius category. If you need it, there’s a fun fact with every picture to give a helpful clue. With more than 60 topics, from across the encyclopedia, there’s something for everyone!

Trey Ratcliff Our community is full of incredible people doing fascinating things and some of them do so many fantastic things that every time you bump into them, they’re onto some new and even more exciting path. Trey Ratcliff is one of them. I’m completely in love with the “Life from Above, and Beyond” video that he made with drone footage from all over the world (and lots of our beautiful Wakatipu Basin) with Hans Zimmer’s music and British philosopher Alan Watts’ wonderful voiceover. Look it up on YouTube and see if you agree. He’s about to make a bigger, better one, but it’s hard to imagine it better. When friends here started sharing his photos of this area - intriguing and thrilling photos, I did some detective work to find out who is Trey Ratcliff and was told he had the biggest photography blog in the world, called “Stuck in Customs” and that he lived here. An email to him asking if he was happy to have dinner with strangers got the reply “The stranger, the better….”.

November 9 and 10. The book he wrote this year “Under the Influence how to fake your way into getting rich on Instagram” (I hate the second part of the title!) is not really about how to do it, but that it can be done, and why it isn’t a very good idea. Even a techno dummy like me can understand it and it’s got some alarming messages. As well as taking photography tours overseas, he also brings groups here, and if you ever see a notice inviting locals to come and watch a slideshow of his photos, accompanied by his very funny and fabulous commentary, get along immediately - the visiting photographers love meeting us, and you’ll be blown away by the photos. It’s a bit easy to get complacent about the scenery here when you see it every day, but seeing it through new eyes restores your appreciation for it. Thanks, Trey!!

Right now, he’s in Africa taking a small group of experts and wanting to be expert photographers on a photo tour. This tour is sold out, but I know there are two spaces on the second one which is South Africa and Madagascar from September 28 - I SO wish I could go. Everyone who’s been on them comes back buzzing with excitement AND brilliant photos. With his reputation and following, governments and tourism boards bend over backwards to give him access to all sorts of events and places normally not available to visitors. He works all over the world and I’m currently trying to pin him down to talk at the brand new Queenstown Book Festival which is taking place on

What’s Happening Karl Maughan’s Garden Works Milford Galleries in Earl Street, Queenstown is showing some of Karl Maughan’s beautiful garden works - the exhibition opens on September 28th and they’ve got their whole spring catalogue starting too. The Keys are in the Margarine Mostly dementia isn’t much fun for anyone, but there are some deliciously funny moments and if you’re caring for someone with it, it teaches you a lot about your own thinking. This play is made up of verbatim interviews with dementia sufferers and has the backing of Brain Research NZ. It’s very moving and entertaining and educational - everyone has a very good chance of developing it at some stage, so best to know as much as you can!!

Margaret Atwood LIVE at Dorothy Browns Is there anyone who HASN’T heard of “The Handmaid’s Tale”? Or seen it on NETFLIX? Atwood is a Canadian novelist, poet and critic and has written dozens of books. Her list of awards is astonishing - every decade, the list gets longer and she has honorary degrees from a huge number of universities. She’s 80 this November and still writing furiously. The sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale” which was written in 1985 is just out now - it’s called “The Testaments” and is looking very likely to win the Booker Prize this year. Everyone wants to hear her speak, and as she can’t be everywhere, especially given her age! There’s a livestream conversation with her and special guests happening all over the world. Book online at Margaretatwoodlive.com - do please take your daughters along - “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a message to all women to vote and keep being heard.
