LAKES WEEKLY

LOCALLY OWNEDSINCE FOREVER BULLETIN

Parking up the wrong tree

At a recent meeting, while discussing the new Stanley St car park options, QLDC councillors voted in favour of cutting 17 trees to allow for 12 more car parks (for a total of 116). In doing so, they went against the council’s own tree policy, costing an additional $300k to the original $1.2 million. The vote was not unanimous but some of the in-favour comments included: “Taking a common sense approach”, “The trees are going at some time to get the true value of the site”, “People have said ‘we want car parks’”, and “Hoped it would encourage more people back to Tāhuna”. Then Queenstown Mayor Glyn Lewers wrapped it up stating “Am I going to put a tree in front of someone’s livelihood? No.”

Regardless of being for or against the plans, one can note the lack of arguments in these intellectually poor comments overall. Will a dozen more car parks actually improve the livelihood of CBD businesses significantly? How many locals will they attract? Anyone can figure out their own answer. And indeed, business representatives, speaking in the public forum, told councillors they’re equally, if not more, concerned and appalled by other CBD policies, especially the hike of outdoor dining fees. Moreover pointing out feeling “exhausted” with the council’s lack of transparency and poor communication. In other words, council can’t see the forest for the trees. QLDC seems to be acting like money grows on trees for some time now and with parking spaces a reliable source of income, you can see why they want more. They’ve also increased parking fines recently, much to the frustration of locals who’ve reported they’re getting tickets for ridiculously minor infringements. Recent community feedback shows QLDC isn’t perceived as a tree of hope, so you’d think they’d extend an olive branch to locals and businesses, by showing willow-like flexibility about policies. But they fail to nip problems in the bud, and demands have proved fruitless.

Councils are expected to work to provide residents with reliable long term shelter, have an efficient water filtering and distributing system, optimize energy and resources use and distribution, erosion and storm water control, provide health benefits and services, foster cooperation…wait...many things that trees do successfully already (and much more), and for free (rather than a 15.5% salary increase). One could look to the trees for inspiration here rather than chopping them down.

There has been a lot of barking up the council’s tree lately. And while it is important to figure out the roots of the problem for the sake of our local democracy (yet currently compromised by FastTrack consenting), there’s a forest behind it. Local sturdy oaks, volunteers, entrepreneurs, who are dedicated to bring our community to full bloom and to turn over a new leaf. Let’s knock on some wood (and that is my last tree pun I swear) - I suggest the trees from Stanley St, while they still stand... Theo Richard - Queenstown resident

Support for family of teacher killed in Crown Range crash

Nearly $8000 has been raised to help repatriate a beloved Filipino teacher killed in a crash on Queenstown’s Crown Range.

Married mother-of-three Joyce Fesico, known as Madoy, died on the notorious mountain pass in a two-vehicle crash last Sunday. She was in New Zealand to attend her niece’s wedding.

Three other people were seriously injured, while others sustained moderate and minor injuries, including two of her family members.

A Givealittle page, created by her sister Mia De Los Santos (O’Riley) to fund repatriation, says she had dedicated her life to teaching high school students in Baao Camarines Sur for many years.

“She was actually due to retire comes January and was looking forward to endless days with family and love of gardening,” it reads. “She was kind, considerate, chill, and funny. She was our confidante. She leaves behind a husband, three children and many grieving family, friends, and students.”

Her family is “deeply moved” by the support they’d received, both in terms of the many messages of condolence, the response of the police and emergency services, and the 140 donations to the fundraising campaign. The wedding went ahead on Sunday with Mia saying it was what her sister would have wanted.

Dozens of her pupils have posted tributes online.

“Hello Mommy Joyce, also known as Ma’am Joyce Fesico, thank you for teaching us, thank you for being our second mother, thank you for telling and sharing your story that helps us grow our knowledge about life,” one reads.

“Your way of teaching is very special. You taught us how to fight, not physically, but mentally. Your lessons will always be unforgettable, and we will always carry them until our last breath. You’ve been an exceptional teacher for caring about your students and treating them like your own kids. Our memories with you will be special and unforgettable.”

Police have not yet formally confirm her identity. The Serious Crash Unit examined the scene for several hours.

Road and car washed away

An SUV was swept away by the Dart River after being abandoned by tourists on a washed out road, reports RNZ.

The tourists had to scramble out of the car after it became swamped on Kinloch Road early on Saturday morning. They hiked to nearby Kinloch and locals then headed back to the car to try to save it, but were unable to, and it was carried off by the river about midday.

Kinloch Wilderness Retreat co-owner Toni Glover told RNZ she believes Queenstown Lakes District Council should have closed the road earlier. It was unclear whether the tourists drove on the road before it was closed by the council, at 8am.

“The road was okay at 11 o’clock last night, but we’ve been worried about it for quite a while because [the river] was just digging into the road, undercutting it,” Glover says. “It’s taken them all two weeks - till this afternoon to even get here.”

The road, which is often washed out by the Dart River when there’s especially heavy rain, is likely to remain closed for some time.

Bus bike rack ban Good vibes returning

their wheels by a temporary

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) told operators across the country to stop using the racks as carrying bikes can potentially obscure headlamps on some bus models.

Otago Regional Council, which runs the service, initially suspended their use at night last week but on Saturday, 9 November, extended the ban to day time too.

“This decision was not made lightly,” ORC Transport Implementation Lead Julian Phillips says.

“We understand the significant impacts this restriction will have on our community. However, we also understand why our operators need to comply with legislation. We’re focusing on the safety and wellbeing of our customers, drivers, and the public.”

Phillips says there hasn’t been any issues about visibility of bus headlights reported by drivers. The buses and racks are now being tested to ensure they comply with road rules. There’s no date as yet for when they might return.

Amanda Robinson, co-founder of Queenstown’s The Lightfoot Initiative, says the active travel charitable trust supports the work around safety concerns but hopes it will move quickly as there have been no flagged incidents. She encourages cyclists to contact Orbus to underline the importance of the racks.

“The response from the community has been encouraging. Many have made contact, expressing their reliance on the bus bike racks for a smooth, efficient commute,” Robinson says.

“Both buses and bike racks are essential for many, and in high demand. Additionally, an increase in safe bike parking options around bus stops, especially in the CBD where racks are often full, would be a great asset for the community.”

Robinson says it’s crucial everyone treats the frontline drivers with the respect they deserve during the temporary ban.

“We’ve heard that, in some cases, drivers may allow bikes on the bus if there’s space, which is a temporary solution that we appreciate.”

Queenstown Lakes business confidence is improving as we head into what is expected to be a busy summer.

Some 116 business owners and managers took part in the latest Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce quarterly survey.

Roughly half say demand is the biggest barrier to growth, following a slow winter season for customer spending. In previous years, finding staff and accommodation for staff have been the biggest issues, but the number of customers coming through the door is now their chief concern.

Input costs have been high (+67%), with net negative real activity (-14%) resulting in net negative profits (-33%). However, the outlook for the next three months much more positive with profits returning to a net positive (+20%).

Chamber boss Sharon Fifield says: “Overall, we are seeing an increase in business confidence and signs are we’re heading in the right direction looking forward to summer and a continued easing of economic conditions.”

Some 36% of respondents came from Queenstown CBD, 17% from Wānaka, followed by Frankton. The survey was sent 17 October to the Chamber’s 600+ members.

Community funds Kimi-ākau Bridge

More than $965,000 has been raised by philanthropists, trail lovers and local businesses says Queenstown Trails chair Michael Walker.

“We’re extremely grateful to all our funders large and small, but special acknowledgment must go to Rod Drury, who contributed $400,000 and the Alterno Foundation and SR McLaren Family Trust that each gave $200,000,” he says.

“This generosity has allowed construction of what will become an icon of the Queenstown Trail - a must visit highlight of the trail network.”

The 110 Trail Lovers who each sponsored a plank on the 90m suspension bridge, at Tucker Beach, collectively contributed $165,000 as part of a challenge laid down by long-term trail supporters Julian and Lizanne Knights.

“It’s been a fantastic community effort.” Walker says.

Construction of the bridge has been completed but it is not yet open, nor is the Shotover Gorge Trail itself, which will connect Arthurs Point to Frankton.

Queenstown cyclists have been left spinning

The stunning new Kimi-ākau Bridge on the Shotover Gorge Trail has now been fully funded by the Queenstown Lakes community.

CRIMELINE

Police are on the hunt for ‘Captain America’ after an offender dressed as him got a bit carried away with his superhero moves at 2.30am in Camp Street on Sunday, 3 November.

Constable Amanda Shute says Police were called to a fight during which one person involved broke his nose on the ground and another was allegedly punched in the nose causing him to fall backwards onto the road. Both visitors, they were taken to Lakes District Hospital.

“The offender, who was dressed as Captain America, had left before Police arrived,” Shute says. If anyone witnessed the incident and can assist with their inquiries, they’re urged to please contact the Police on 105 quoting, 241103/5431.

Car thieves target Kelvin Heights again

Police are concerned about another spate of car break ins and thefts in the Jardine Park, Oregon Drive, Cedar Drive, Kelvin Grove areas of Kelvin Heights and are urging residents to lock their houses and vehicles and remove any valuables out of view.

Shute says three vehicles have been broken into since Friday (1 November), one was stolen and found later between the Kelvin Heights Golf Course and the nearby Wakatipu Yacht Club. The ignition barrel was damaged in two of the vehicles and another also had the back window smashed in.

Police are asking any residents in the area to check their CCTV footage regularly, if they have it, and Shute says they would like to hear from them. “If you see any suspicious activity or people in the area video footage is a great tool to help Police with our investigation.” People can also report suspicious behaviour either through 111 or through 105.

A local resident alerted the Kelvin Peninsula Community Association on Tuesday to warn residents after a side back window of a car, parked at the intersection of Cedar Drive and Holly Court, was smashed overnight. The post says neighbours were supplying Police with CCTV footage. A post a few days earlier says another car was broken into near Hilton Queenstown.

Joy riders smash into tree

Police are also investigating the unlawful taking of a vehicle and a subsequent crash in Arrowtown between midnight and 3.30am on Friday, 1 November. The stolen vehicle smashed into a tree with damage caused to both the tree and the vehicle. No further details were available, however, a social media post from the person believed to own the car said she believed it had been stolen by teenagers who allegedly took it for a joy ride crashing into a tree just below the Arrowtown Preschool. The car was then driven to Adamson Drive and abandoned.

Patients airlifted from Hanley’s crash

Two patients, both in moderate conditions, were airlifted to Lakes District Hospital by helicopter after a crash at the Hanley’s Farm State Highway 6 (Kingston Road) intersection just before 7pm on Saturday, 2 November. A St John spokesperson says two helicopters responded to the crash.

Shute says the driver of a vehicle turning into Hanley’s Farm had allegedly failed to give way to an oncoming vehicle. Ambulance staff attended, and all parties were transported to hospital with injuries unknown. A St John spokesperson says a helicopter also transported one patient to Southland Hospital in a moderate condition after an incident in Camp Street at 1.41pm on 2 November.

Arts+Culture

Sun and supporting local

Summer is (mostly) on its way and market season is upon us. We’re lucky to live in a town full of creative and talented people, offering artisan wares. Many of the markets in the region offer handmade goods or food straight from the source, meaning you’ll get to pick up something unique.

There are a lot of markets in the region, but highlights include the Queenstown Market on the lakefront, which is on every Saturday and a couple of Fridays a month. There’s also Remarkables Market at the Red Barn, Arrowtown Market and the occasional Makers Market at Country Lane. Supporting these local pop ups means supporting real people in our community – and the opportunity to pick up some funky items, too.

“There’s such a great arts culture here that we wanted to embrace that more,” Charlie Archer at the Makers Market says. They’re one of the newest markets on the block, running sporadically at Country Lane. They’ve got about 50 stallholders on their books with 20 or so showing up each market.

A regular at some of the markets around town is Jessica Simpson. Her clothing brand, So Sloe, is going against the fast fashion movement and providing one-of-a-kind garments. She’s created custom patterns for her jumpers and hats, sewing each item lovingly by hand. All of her wool beanies are made using 100% New Zealand Wool, however as Simpson explains, there isn’t much fabric production happening in Aotearoa, so while she purchases her fabrics here, most is unfortunately made overseas – she seeks out local wherever possible.

“It’s a good way for some of the local talent to get showcased. It’s such a cool little market and the fact that everything there is handmade by the person at the store means there’s no confusion about where things are coming from, it’s really transparent,” Simpson says.

Queenstown Market has been in operation for more than 35 years. Situated along the Lakefront, it’s home to inspiring clothing designers, potters, jewellers, knitters, wood artisans, soap makers, photographers, and the list goes on! All products here must be crafted by stallholders – a wee hub for budding and established arts and crafts enthusiasts.

It was started as a way of people making a living in Queenstown as an alternative to other things, and giving people an opportunity to sell to the public without having to be a retail store themselves. They’ve got people who have been attending for 30-plus years, with a huge range of ages and a big diversity of wonderful products.

The Remarkables Market is on a mission to be New Zealand’s first zero-waste market. If you head along to the Red Barn on Saturdays, you’ll find reusable cups, mugs, bowls and plates as well as a proper composting system. During winter there were five events, but summer is when these markets really shine, happening every Saturday. They have stallholders offering crafts, artisan foods, jewellery and arts as well as musicians performing weekly.

Arrowtown Market is held on Sundays under the picturesque old trees on the Library Green and has evolved from its early days in 2017 as a Farmers’ Market. Sarah Auld at the markets explains that their committee is made up of vendors, which is all voluntary. Pop by and you can enjoy live music, a bite to eat and a relaxing vibe.

“We are, what we like to call, a boutique market,” Auld says. “We are a smaller number of stalls and that’s just purely to do with the fact that we operate in a heritage area of our town. Being right in the heart of Arrowtown, there’s quite a lot of covenants and restrictions that are placed on how big we can be – but we like to celebrate the fact that we are small, everyone that comes along is handpicked and we don’t double up on things.”

The markets and stallholders mentioned each have a presence on social media, so if you’d like to find out more do a quick Google or Facebook search and you’ll be able to find additional info.

COMMUNITY NOTES

Flat out beautiful Queenstown Marathon celebrates 10 years

This year the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon presented by ASICS will celebrate its 10th year of running, establishing a world-renowned reputation since its inaugural edition in 2014 as one of the most beautiful marathon events in the world.

The 2024 event will take place on Saturday, 16 November, and is expected to welcome more than 12,000 registered runners and walkers to the stunning roads and trails of the Queenstown Lakes District.

Founded just over 10 years ago, the vision for the Queenstown Marathon was to create a premium running event in New Zealand’s adventure capital, using our stunning trail network, that would attract international visitors while also enabling Kiwis to experience the beauty on their back door. The event would also encourage participants to stay and play in the region, making the Queenstown Marathon as much about the weekend away as the run itself.

Michelle Pepper, Managing Director of The IRONMAN Group Oceania, organisers of the Queenstown Marathon, was involved in developing the event from the ground up.

“We believed in this amazing location, amazing destination to travel to, and then this backdrop, just a stunning backdrop to run in,” Pepper says.

“We decided to put the event in shoulder season, pre-Christmas and off the back of winter, at a time when numbers weren’t massive, and they [stakeholders] could see that it would help tourism. Once we had the support of the Queenstown Trails Trust, we started designing courses and it all came together quite quickly.”

The response to the newly created Queenstown Marathon exceeded all expectations. The event was such a success that organisers decided to close off entries at just under 6,000, four months out from the event date, having originally anticipated and planned for around 1,500 participants.

“We initially projected that we were going to have 1,500 in year one, and we’re going to have 5,000 by year five. After the success of year one we revised the target to 10,000 within five years – and we got that in year three.”

With demand piqued, all focus turned to delivering the best possible experience for those taking part in the first ever Queenstown Marathon.

While the weather had other ideas, with torrential rain and strong winds facing runners on race morning, year one of the Queenstown Marathon is one that will live long in the memory of those who took part that day – in fact, two participants loved the event so much that they had the new Queenstown Marathon logo tattooed onto their arm.

“Still to this day my favourite memory of the event is the first year, with the tattoos 100% being the big one. That was just a huge tick for us,” Pepper says.“The weather also makes year one special, recognising that we’re in an alpine environment and things can change so quickly. Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of New Zealand, and it was quite an adventure that year.”

With the Queenstown Marathon more than doubling in size since 2014, it has become a vital event for the regional economy. With roughly 90% of Queenstown Marathon participants travelling to the event from outside of the region, with around 20% coming from overseas, in recent years the event has helped to inject an annual average of around $20 million into local businesses and operators.

While the event brings in thousands of new participants each year, at its core is a group of 44 Founding Runners who have taken part in every edition of the Queenstown Marathon since its inception and are set to line up once again for their 10th year.

Annie Rankin is one of those Founding Runners and a Queenstown local. She took part in the first event in 2014 after being challenged by her gym coach to start running at 56 years old, a challenge which would go on to spark a 10year obsession with her hometown event.

“We love sharing Queenstown with visitors and when you have running as a shared passion it just elevates the fun. A decade of the race shows the amazing commitment of the organisers, sponsors and the runners who fly in from so far away to run and play in our wee town,” Rankin says.

Looking back on 10 years of the Queenstown Marathon, Pepper reflects fondly on what has been created by a collection of dedicated and passionate organisers, stakeholders, volunteers, and participants.

“What makes the Queenstown Marathon so special? It’s all about the amazing backdrop, the incredible trails you’re going to run on, and the destination. It’s not just an event, it’s an experience. It’s a weekend away, yes, there is a run, but actually it’s about coming to Queenstown with mates, and having a social weekend.”

NEWS IN BRIEF

70 and still going strong

RealNZ took home the Supreme Tourism Award at the New Zealand Tourism Industry Association annual awards last week. The Queenstown and Fiordland based business also took the win in both category awards they were finalists in, the Tourism Excellence Award (Large Business), and the Tourism Environment Award. The Tourism Champion Award went to the International Antarctic Centre’s David Kennedy, a former Queenstowner. Judges noted RealNZ’s “unwavering commitment to sustainability” and lauded the business as a “jewel in the crown of the country’s tourism industry”. RealNZ’s experiences are spread over the lower South Island, including Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound adventures, Walter Peak, TSS Earnslaw steamship, Spirit of Queenstown, Stewart Island, Cardrona and Treble Cone ski areas, Queenstown rafting and more.

Wastebusters clean up

Wānaka’s not-for-profit community enterprise Wastebusters was announced the Supreme Winner of the Wānaka Business Excellence Awards at a gala dinner at Rippon Vineyard on Saturday, 9 November. In addition to securing the top award, the zero waste hub won the Community Contribution Award and the Business Sustainability & Environmental Impact Award, recognising its commitment to environmental and social impact. A record 67 entries were received for the awards hosted by the Wānaka Business Chamber.

Nevis ready to rock

Waka Kotahi’s Nevis Bluff spring / summer rockfall scaling programme got underway on Monday. The scaling occurs every autumn and spring with abseilers, suspended on ropes, inspecting the rocky face and removing loosened rocks that are hazardous to highway users, above SH6 between Cromwell and Queenstown. “People should be ready for delays up to about ten minutes and allow some extra travel time for journeys between Cromwell and Queenstown,” Peter Standring, NZTA Maintenance and Contract Manager in Central Otago, says. The work is scheduled to take place over three weeks from Monday, 11 November, through to Friday, 29 November, 8am to 5pm weekdays, subject to weather conditions.

CAA certification for Wānaka Airport

Wānaka Airport is set to be certified by the Civil Aviation Authority to reflect the increase in activity there by private and commercial users. The airport is owned by Queenstown Lakes District Council. “This is an important, logical and necessary step in our responsible ownership of an increasingly busy airport,” Tony Avery, QLDC Property & Infrastructure GM, says. “Over the next year we’re expecting more than 50,000 aircraft movements, which makes it one of the busiest uncertified airports in Aotearoa New Zealand.” Becoming certified, by July 2027, will bring it in line with similar facilities around the country, improving safety. QLDC is also again reviewing the future direction of the airport. Last time around it granted a 100-year lease to Queenstown Airport Corporation, with the intention of Queenstown Lakes becoming a dual-scheduled airport district, but was taken to the High Court by locals, who successfully challenged the legality of the lease.

My Life Story

‘MR

D’ – MARK DOUGLAS

Mr ‘Do It, Done it, D’

He was affectionately known as ‘Mr D’ during his 40 years teaching at Queenstown Primary School, where Mark Douglas wore shorts year-round and always had a referee’s whistle draped around his neck.

Now at 74 and driving for Queenstown Taxis, to his delight he still gets the odd ex-pupil taxi client, a bit worse for wear in the wee hours, recognising his voice and slurring, ‘Awh! That’s Mr D!’

Mark has many proud moments from his 47-year primary teaching career, most notably helping kids to challenge themselves safely in the outdoors and leading in that by example. Not only has he successfully completed the gruelling Kepler Challenge 17 times, seven Luxmore Grunts and 13 Routeburn Classics, but Mark’s renowned locally for knocking off Ben Lomond in all weathers, night and day, a whopping 420 times.

Sports and the outdoors have always been a huge part of his life, he and his brothers growing up on the family’s Waiuku, South Auckland farm. “It was Paradise, backing onto Lake Pokoroa surrounded by 70 acres of forest, 30 minutes’ walk from the coast,” he says.

In 1960 Mark’s well-read farmer dad answered the winning question on popular Selwyn Toogood TV show, ‘It’s In The Bag’, at the Waiuku Hall taking ‘the bag’ and a fl ight to Christchurch for two, the kids coming too. Mark witnessed Queenstown’s spectacular mountains and decided he was coming back to live here one day. “I was absolutely hooked.”

It took until 1980 but after teaching in Auckland for three years he scored a job in Tapanui, becoming deputy principal at nearby Heriot School. He and his wife were caught out by the Kelso Flood in 1980 with a metre of water through their home.

A senior teaching role then arose at Queenstown Primary, daughter Fleur arriving soon after.

Mark was in his element, becoming very involved in outdoor education and school sport, under legendary school principal Mel Gazzard. “They were wonderful years. My 15 years there with Mel were absolutely amazing. He was a remarkable man with a wonderful sense of adventure.”

Mark clocked 27 Year 6 Stewart Island school camps – a huge highlight, something that he and Mel instigated along with what became the school’s renowned Outdoor Education Week.

There was less red tape then. “There was no track into Sam Summer’s Hut, but Mel and I took chainsaws early before we took the kids in and cut back the windfalls. DOC then put a proper track into Sam Summer’s Hut which eventually became the loop.”

Southland Education Board approval was needed to take children on water, but the fi rst year that they operated a gentle ‘fl oat trip’ with help from local rafting companies their cover was blown. “As we came out by the Lower Shotover Bridge a Southland Times reporter was waiting to take a photo of the kids which landed on the front page the next day. Mel got a

barrelling from the board as we didn’t have permission,” grins Mark. “Kids got so much out of that; their self-confi dence grew.”

Mark managed the school’s Kapa Haka group in the early days. “We walked into our fi rst competition in Invercargill with only three Mā ori kids out of 23, and Chinese, Japanese and Pakeha. It was deadly serious, but they really embraced us and loved that we were trying to bridge the gap.”

In 2018, Mark’s last year teaching, he had 11 different cultures in his class.

“The kids could always communicate. They didn’t care. It was wonderful.” ‘Mr D’ had the moves too, nine-year-old boys, arms folded, cringing, as they arrived in his classroom, knowing they’d be taught ballroom dancing. Mark ran a sports show on Resort Radio from 1991. The organiser of the local Indoor Netball competition and for a while social cricket, he and Joe O’Connell ran popular Cricket Six-a-Side competitions with all three downtown parks full. He’s coached kids’ netball and cricket to some regional wins, always in demand as umpire, earning his Umpires Provincial Badge.

Mark sat on the Establishment Events Centre Trust, fi tting in Lions and Rotary, and helping wife Brenda run the Fernhill Dairy, before becoming a limousine driver in 2018.

He’s completed 24 half marathons, his best time around 1hr28mins. A last-minute Kepler Challenge training sprint up 1748m Ben Lomond in 1991 sparked his 33-year-long personal challenge with that mountain. Still conquering NZ’s fi ve far smaller Ben Lomonds, Mark’s now working his way up the six overseas ones – the original in Scotland set for a year’s time. He’s writing a book documenting his Ben Lomond adventures. Determined to meet his challenge he’s even completed scheduled climbs with snow on the ground in Queenstown, friends helping him plug steps up to the saddle.

“I’ve ended up up there in the dark on my own, when the moon’s out and the snow’s refl ecting the light. It’s the most glorious place to be.”

“The M ā ori say, ‘You have a mountain’. That’s my mountain.”
