The clock has started on the 20-year vision to diversify Queenstown’s economy away from tourism and hospitality. Earlier this year ‘Technology Queenstown’ launched to much fanfare and Otago University has just announced plans to support the region as a technology hub and centre of innovation with a permanent presence here.
This week’s announcement of a future-focused charter school planned for Queenstown will not only provide families an educational alternative but it also aligns with Queenstown’s aspirations and future.
Liger Leadership Academy has signed an MOU for its curriculum framework to be integrated into a new charter school. Liger has been developing its approach for the last 12 years and is a prime example of what a futurefocused school can achieve. At Liger there are still traditional core subjects connected to the NZ Curriculum, but the Liger learning framework also includes an equal amount of time for project-based learning experiences called ‘Explorations’, where learners develop leadership and resilience through adapting to changing situations, collaborating to solve problems, harnessing emerging technology, and developing an innovative mindset to address community challenges.
Charter schools are designed to be publicly funded but independently operated, giving them the freedom to design their curriculum to the needs of their community. Charter schools also enter performance-based contracts which hold them accountable for both academic and social outcomes. There will be regular monitoring and reviews by the government, but the greatest accountability will be to those it serves - our community. My 18 years in private International Schools around the world has taught me that this level of accountability drives innovation and incentivises schools to continuously rethink their methods to ensure that they are meeting the evolving needs of their learners and communities. Schools should be the places young people go to learn how to change the world.
In many ways Queenstown is already primed for a more innovative, progressive approach to education. The world is changing so rapidly that we simply cannot predict what skills and knowledge today’s learners will need in 5, 10, or 20 years. Therefore I believe it is crucial to shift from a traditional, structured approach to one that is innovative and focused on the needs of our town.
A charter school offers not just a choice in education but a solution to the challenges facing Queenstown’s future. By providing families with choice and focusing on unity, leadership, the environment, technology and preparing our young people for an evolving job market, Queenstown will secure its place as a forward-thinking community in the most beautiful location on earth.
As the Head of the Liger Academy, I am ecstatic that our Liger learners will be among the first to be offered places, they will be the foundation for the transformation of education in Queenstown.

Queens-city? We’re not there yet
Queenstown is still a town according to the latest figures from Stats NZ.
The town had been widely expected to surpass the 30,000 population figure needed for a urban area to be classed as a city, before the latest subnational yearly estimates were published on Friday.
But it missed by a whisker, with an estimated population at 30 June, 2024, of 27,700. That’s up from 27,000 in 2023 and just 15,000 in 2014.
Queenstown Lakes District, however, has already passed the landmark city-sized 50k figure for a territorial authority. Some 52,400 people now live here, up 1400 from last year, or 2.8%. But it has a rural, rather than urban, geography.
Even when Queenstown itself passes the 30k mark, district mayor Glyn Lewers says council won’t seek to differentiate it from Queenstown Lakes.
“We won’t be going to the Local Government Commission to be asked to be called a city. We’re a district,” he tells our Outlet Podcast.
“We’ve got many communities in and around this district including Wānaka, Luggate, Hāwea, Makarora, Kingston, Glenorchy ... so just to single out Queenstown and call it a city ... no, my focus is trying to get the level of service [needed] and trying to meet the needs of the whole, of all the people around the district.”
Lewers discusses the massive challenges and opportunities of population and visitor number growth in this week’s episode of the Outlet Podcast. That includes the nine projects on the Government’s new Fast-Track process, which could create 6000 homes but also major problems for infrastructure.
“It’s a concern for infrastructure, not just the infrastructure we deliver but also Crown infrastructure, such as energy, schools, health,” Lewers says.
“The proposals themselves, a lot are heavy on housing, and there’s no argument there, we need housing in this district. But there are some areas where the infrastructure to support that housing is not actually present in those areas. “So, look, it’s a challenge. There’s a few raised eyebrows within council, I can say that.”
Lewers doesn’t believe the Fast-Track process is designed to circumvent environmental protections, however, but instead is a way to consider all the legislation at once. But he admits there is some concern about how councils can be involved in the process.
In the next few weeks, the Government is also expected to announce the five areas chosen to submit proposals for the new Regional Deals, enabling them to use new funding tools and levels of debt.
QLDC has spoken to Central Otago District Council, Ngāi Tahu and the private sector about a potential application.
“There’s no major announcement yet,” Lewers says. “It’s in a little bit of a holding patten until we find out the direction and if we’re one of the chosen ones. I will either be sad or happy. I don’t think they’ll be any neutral emotion there.”
Lewers discusses several other topics, including the 15% pay rise for QLDC chief executive Mike Theelen, in this week’s Outlet Podcast. Give it a listen on the Lakes Weekly Bulletin website lwb.co.nz or the Queenstown App.

Petition for Queenstown charter school
by Paul Taylor
Plans for Queenstown’s first charter school are well advanced with Manawaroa Education aiming to secure government funding.
The school, which will absorb Queenstown’s Liger Leadership Academy, would cater to 250 pupils, providing an alternative to Wakatipu High School. WHS is expected to reach capacity by around 2027, and plans for a second high school on Ladies Mile are on the back burner.
“Queenstown is perfect for a charter school and we have the resources to create one at speed,” Manawaroa Education director Katherine AllsoppSmith says.
Manawaroa Education, which opened the AGE (Academy for Gifted Education) School in Auckland eight years ago, plans to establish charter schools in Auckland, Upper Hutt, Christchurch and Queenstown.
It is one of 78 organisations competing for a share of Government funding. Some $153 million has been set aside in this year’s budget with the aim of backing 15 new charter schools and the conversion of 35 state schools. Led by Act leader and Associate Education Minister David Seymour, the Coalition Government is reinstating the charter school model across NZ. They have more autonomy than state schools, including over curriculum and the buildings they operate from, but must fulfil a performance-based contract with the Ministry of Education.
Allsopp-Smith says the charter school will bring more personalised education options to the basin, focused on a tech-led future, educational excellence and holistic student development.
It will be open to children across the region, regardless of economic background.
Manawaroa Education has started a petition so Queenstown residents can show their support for the plans to establish the school. It will be included in the charter school submission to the Government and is available at www. petitions.nz
Liger’s gift
And the organisation has this week been gifted the Liger Leadership Academy learning model licence, by founders Trevor and Agnieszka Gile, which means the Liger curriculum and assets will be assimilated into the future school.
“We always intended to gift our unique Liger Learning model back to this community and hopefully other communities in New Zealand,” Agnieszka Tynkiewicz-Gile says.
“To have the opportunity to gift it towards the development of Queenstown’s first charter school, so that it is affordable and available to all, regardless of economic background, would be the best possible outcome.”
The Giles, who won the Spirit of the Wakatipu Education Award last Saturday for making an outstanding contribution to education, established the Liger Leadership Academy model over a decade ago, aiming to encourage critical thinking and foster socially conscious future leaders.
Its Cambodian academy was recognised as one of the world’s top 100 most innovative schools, with more than 80% of graduates receiving full scholarships to top universities. Like Queenstown, the Giles gifted the national licence to the American University of Phnom Penh earlier this year, and it is now owned and operated by Cambodians.
The Queenstown Liger Leadership Academy opened as an independent school in 2021, with all students receiving either a full or partial scholarship. It has 39 students, based in premises in Frankton’s Five Mile.
“We are a startup school so it’s a natural evolution for us to find a partner to continue with our vision. Manawaroa Education’s plans for tech-enabled schools that specialise in inquiry, feed into our model beautifully and can take our curriculum to a broader, national community,” Agnieszka says.
But for now, school continues as usual at the Liger Leadership Academy. The Giles have committed to continuing to sponsor it next year and are personally gifting 10 full scholarships for new students who register to enrol for 2025.
“We have kept our students and families informed throughout this process and we’ve ensured that if and when the charter school opens they will be among its first students. We have already begun several student-led projects to plan the fit-out and design of a new charter school. We would really appreciate it if the community could help make the charter school a reality by showing their support for the proposal,” Agnieszka says.
The location of the proposed Manawaroa Education charter school, although the new $45m Queenstown Research and Innovation Centre in Remarkables Park and the Coronet Village development on Malaghans Rd are potential locations.

CRIMELINE
Roadside drug bust
Police uncovered drug paraphernalia and utensils used for methamphetamine/ amphetamine, including a meth pipe, a knife and a 48gram bag of cannabis during a routine roadside stop on Frankton Road at 1.28am on Thursday, 17 October.
Constable Amanda Shute says a 58-year-old local male passenger in the vehicle was arrested and charged with possession and use of utensils for methamphetamine/amphetamine and possession of an offensive weapon, after Police searched the vehicle. Shute says the man was searched and Police allegedly found a meth pipe in his jacket pocket and a knife inside a pouch attached to his belt. He will reappear in the Queenstown District Court on 18 November.
The 43-year-old local woman, driving the vehicle, was arrested and charged with possession for supply of cannabis plant after Police allegedly noticed the cannabis and conducted the search. She will reappear in the Queenstown District Court on 18 November.
Disorderly behaviour and resisting police
Police were called to Remarkables Park Shopping Centre at 12.50am on Sunday, 20 October, after receiving reports of a disorderly male kicking over rubbish bins. Police later allegedly saw the 38-year-old local man attempting to open the door of a parked vehicle.
“When arrested by Police the male allegedly physically resisted, kicking at the arresting officer and pulling his hands away when the officer was attempting to handcuff him,” Shute says.
Further investigations identified the male had allegedly damaged a store window nearby by throwing outdoor furniture at it. The man was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour, wilful damage, unlawful interference of a motor vehicle and resisting Police. He was due to appear in the Queenstown District Court last Tuesday.
Police were also called to Shotover Street at 1.20am on Wednesday, 23 October, after a scuffle broke out between two local men. Both were located by Police, one with a cut to his forehead which required medical treatment at Lakes District Hospital. Shute says enquiries are continuing.
Brazen firewood trailer
thief
Police are calling for witnesses after a thief allegedly driving a dark-coloured utility vehicle with a quad bike on the back, stole a trailer loaded with firewood from Strains Road, Lake Hayes, at 6pm on Thursday, 17 October. Shute says a member of the public saw the loaded trailer being attached to the back of the utility vehicle.
“If you witnessed this and have not contacted Police yet, please contact Police on 105 quoting file number 241017/7312.”
Repeat driving while disqualified
A 24-year-old Southland man was charged with driving while disqualified third and subsequent after being located by Police allegedly driving in Frankton at 11.04am on Thursday, 17 October. He will appear in the Queenstown District Court on 18 November.

Downtown parking approved
Seventeen trees will be chopped on downtown Queenstown’s Stanley Street block to make way for an additional dozen spots in a 116-space car park.
Councillors last week pushed the button on plans for the former Queenstown Performing Arts Centre and Queenstown Playcentre site, after being presented with two options.
One option would have expanded the existing car park to 104-parks, retaining the trees. But after a lengthy debate the majority of councillors voted instead to axe the trees for the maximum number of parks possible. A dozen mature trees on the site will be retained, however, after advice from arborists.
The site will open as a temporary gravel car park by 20 December for the busy Christmas and New Year period, before being sealed after Waitangi weekend (6 February, 2025).
Charges for use of the car park will be set at $3.10 per hour. If it’s 80% full, that means the project’s $1.5 million cost will be paid back within three years. The Stanley St block is earmarked long term for community facilities, such as a new performing arts centre, while the wider block is set aside for the controversial Project Manawa development, which includes new council offices.
Until 20 December, the Stanley St car park is being used for coach parking, while the Kā Huanui a Tāhuna Alliance works on nearby Athol St and Ballarat St stormwater upgrades, limiting the parking there.
Top bikers coming to town
The world’s most exciting mountain bikers are set to test their skills in Queenstown.
The inaugural Natural Selection Bike will be held on Mt Dewar on 15 February, 2025, featuring 30 men and women competing in downhill, slopestyle, and freeride.
It has the backing of MBIE, through the New Zealand Major Events Fund, and will be NZ’s leading ultra low emission sporting event.
New Zealand’s top freeride mountain bike athlete Robin Goomes, who won the prestigious Red Bull Rampage earlier this month, is thrilled the competition is coming to Aotearoa.
“There is such a sick mountain bike scene here and everyone’s going to be fizzed to get amongst it,” Goomes says. “There are already so many talented young riders in NZ and I think having this on their doorstep is just going to push them to the next level.”
Formerly known as Proving Grounds, the competition is now part of the Natural Selection Tour (NST), which is the brainchild of pro snowboarder Travis Rice.
It showcases the world’s top athletes competing in the planet’s most exciting environments. The tour debuted in 2021 with snowboarding and has now expanded to incorporate ski, surf and bike. Athletes are judged on creativity, risk, execution, difficulty, and overall impression.
The NZ event will also feature a ‘Dream Ticket’ qualifier at the Dream Track in central Queenstown on 8-9 February, which will give local talent the opportunity to compete for four spots at the main event. Read more on lwb.co.nz and the Queenstown App.

Pax Assadi - Secrets
Hi, Pax Assadi here. It’s really nice to see you. Is that a new top? It looks great on you, the colour really compliments your skin tone. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Queenstown. I’ve been busy with life— water blasting my deck, building flat pack furniture, and making award-winning television (Watch Raised By Refugees now on NEON or Sky Go).
Hey, so… I need to tell you something BUT I need you to keep it a secret. Can you do that? Ok, cool. Then come to Sherwood, and I’ll share this secret with you in the form of standup comedy. Ideally, you come alone, but if you must, you may bring one other person—maybe a significant other or close friend. Coming in a large group is also acceptable, but you have to make sure that everyone in this group understands that what I’m going to share with you is highly confidential. If they fail to respect the classified nature of what will be said on the night, their life may be at risk.

Monthly Column
Joseph Mooney MP for Southland
Queenstown has recently made the news for potentially becoming New Zealand’s next city due to our population growth. It is a pivotal moment for our region as we mature from being known as a small resort town to one of New Zealand’s newest – and most exciting –cities.
The Queenstown Lakes District has grown from around 20,000 residents in 2003 to over 50,000 residents today, and that is just the resident population. We are of course also one of the most desirable destinations for many visitors to New Zealand.
Broadly speaking, it is much better to be in a region that is growing rather than stagnating or declining.
So, although we have challenges, they are good challenges to have.
To grow well, we need all sectors in the district to work well together to address our considerable and growing infrastructure requirements.
For example we need those responsible for energy, transport, telecommunications, health, education, three waters, and housing supply to work well together. It is also important that those elements are well integrated into the incredible environment that we live in and treasure.
The inclusion of seven key projects around Queenstown that have been listed for the next step in the Fast Track Bill is a significant step for Queenstown.
They offer to opportunity to address some of our crucial housing shortages. In a country that has some of the most expensive housing the world, Queenstown is an outlier at the wrong end of the spectrum – the housing affordability index (the ratio of the average current house values to average household incomes) is double that of the national average. The mean annual earnings in the Queenstown Lakes District are also about $10,000 lower than the national average. That means more young families priced out of the region, and critical workers living in unsuitable accommodation. So we need solutions.
The projects selected for the next stage of the process have gone through a robust process, including assessments by the Ministry for the Environment, an independent Advisory Group, and Cabinet approval.
Once the legislation is passed, each project will then be referred to an expert panel to consider the project further, and technical experts, including environmental experts, may place conditions on the projects to make sure environmental effects are taken into account. These panels will have the final say over whether a project is approved or not.
More than 6,000 new homes, and three new tourism developments have been added to the fast-track list. These local projects offer the opportunity to boost our regional economy, create new jobs, and improve infrastructure to accommodate our growing population.
There is however more that will need to be done to address the infrastructure requirements of our growing region, to enable a better quality of life for the people who live here and also to enable a better experience for our visitors.
Finally, I should note that the green shoots of economic recovery are showing. Inflation has dropped to 2.2% - the lowest it’s been since March 2021. It has also been great to see the Official Cash Rate (OCR) drop to 4.75%.
These are all positive signs for our growing region as we look ahead to a city-sized future.

Part
science fiction, part social realism
by Jessica Allen
“Weird as f*ck” is one way Pip Adam’s latest book, Audition, has been described. It’s all about a spaceship that is hurtling towards the event horizon that holds three giants. Adam will explore the wonderous and disquieting themes of this challenging book with Rachael King at this year’s Queenstown Writers Festival.
Audition is part science fiction and part social realism – the three giants Alba, Stanley and Drew are squashed, immobile, into rooms in the spaceship. If they talk, the spaceship keeps moving, but if they’re silent, they continue to grow. The book was also shortlisted for the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction at the 2024 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.
“The book is a lot about the justice system and prisons, and some alternative ideas for justice in New Zealand,” Adam says. “All those ideas culminated and I think I was really lucky – I was a resident of the Institute of Modern Letters when I wrote that book, so I had a lot of time to think and read, so that’s how it all came together.”
Adam has an obsession with big things – she studied at Otago University and has family in Invercargill and Queenstown, so the big landscapes of the region are always floating around in her mind. She’s written before about big buildings – one as big as the Burj Khalifa – on the West Coast. Aotearoa inspires Adam’s work too – she explains that she loves living here but is also interested in what the decolonial process is going to look like here.
“I’m very interested in some of the problems we have and some of the things that we need to solve, some of the justices that need to be put right. I don’t think there’s a country that I’d rather be in – this is a magnificent country.”
Her session, “Weird as”: Pip Adam’s Science Fiction, will include Rachael King. The pair will discuss each other’s books as well as the idea of the creative, imaginative and political potential that writing ‘weird’ things has. “When we skew things a little bit and make them a little bit weird, I think it gives us a chance to talk about things in a more expansive way sometimes.”
Adam will also be involved in Saraid de Silva’s session surrounding her latest book Amma, which was one of the book highlights of Adam’s year. It’s a book that explores three generations of women and their shift between Sri Lanka, New Zealand and London, each with their own volatile story and secrets. Adam describes it as touching on such profound work and experience – a fantastic read that she’s been recommending to everyone.
SAFE & EFFECTIVE ROADSHOW
Hits Queenstown 11 November: A Quest for Common Sense, Compassion & Justice ~ Searching for truth, impacts & solutions around the New Zealand COVID Response. Register https://www.roadshow24.nz/. Earlybird finishes 31 Oct.
“I really love going down there because it changes every time I go down – and it’s that wonderful thing, the change but then the very beautiful permanence of the mountains and the lake – it’s a great combination. I’m really looking forward to talking to Rachael King. I love Rachael’s book – I love all of Rachael’s writing, but her latest book in particular, and I feel like there’s going to be some quite nice overlap between her latest book and my latest book. And of course, I just cannot wait to speak to Saraid de Silva about her book Amma, which is just magnificent. I’m feeling very excited about being down there.”
Adam is really excited for the festival and is so grateful to the organisers. “Weird as”: Pip Adam’s Science Fiction will take place at Te Atamira on Sunday, 3 November, at 10am. She’ll also be talking at Generational Shift, Cultural Clash with Saraid de Silva on Saturday, 2 November, at 12pm. My Life Story
by Sue Fea
RUSSELL HECKLER
A job well done
From JP and Waitaki District councillor to Lakes District Museum chairman, Arrowtown MenzShed founder and go to ‘Wasp Man’, Russell Heckler is a humble, no fuss and tireless community contributor. Even in his supposed ‘retirement’ he enjoys his twice daily Arrowtown Wakatipu High School bus run, a fi erce advocate for the “great kids” he carries on board. “The Arrowtown students are very good, I enjoy them,” he says. Besides, after more than 40 years farming you can’t sit idle. “It gets me going in the morning,” he grins.
The eldest of fi ve kids, Russell was born in 1946, growing up on the family’s Stoneburn farm, in East Otago. They rode ponies to the two-teacher Dunback School in summer, swimming in the Shag River on the way home. High school years were spent boarding at Waitaki Boys.
Fun holidays were had at the family’s Merioneth Street crib in Arrowtown from the late 1950s, skating, and skiing at a very basic Coronet Peak Skifi eld using rope and nutcracker tows. “There was only a bit of a cafeteria serving hot canned tomato soup or pies,” he says. They rowed, fi shed and swam on Lake Hayes in summer and explored for miles beyond Macetown and around Moke Lake in his dad’s farm Land Rover, walking the heady heights of the irrigation pipeline up the Arrow River. “Gee, you wouldn’t be allowed to do that now,” he says.
Movies screened in the hall during Christmas holidays, with the chairs then stacked away and dances held, featuring bands like Invercargill’s ‘The Satellites’. “Mrs Dudley, from Dudley’s Cottage, had the milk bar, ex-mayor Jack Reid had a dairy and Alec Hamilton had the general store, the only shops in the main street.”
After two years working on farms in Clinton and mid-Canterbury Russell did a Diploma of Agriculture at Lincoln College. “They were among some of the best two years of my life”, Russell grins, preferring not to share why. He also met his wife of 54 years, Denise, in Christchurch, before he and his younger brother bought a Balfour farm, with help from their dad, when Russell was 22. There were the usual challenges, like the fl ood of 1978 that saw their access bridge washed out, forcing them to ford the river for several months.
Russell and Denise then bought a farm at Dunback on the Pig Route between Palmerston and Ranfurly where they raised their three daughters and farmed for 30 years. There were the usual trials and tribulations, like serious droughts, but nothing fazes Russell. “You just have to farm around them,” he says.
Russell was president of the Waihemo Collie Club as a dog triallist, and of the Dunback Tennis Club, both of which he’s a Life Member. He served several terms on the Waitaki District Council during the 1990s and became a Justice of the Peace in 1995.
In 2010 Russell and Denise, a high school teacher, retired, their childhood holiday love of Arrowtown beckoning. Denise had also grown up with a family crib there.
“We just loved the weather up here,” Russell says.
Within a few years Russell had joined the Arrowtown Bowling Club, and was president for several years, and the board of the Lakes District Museum, which he’s chaired for the last four years. Local history is a passion and with long-time director David Clarke at the helm they oversaw the massive multi-million-dollar earthquake strengthening redevelopment.
A farmer’s tools can’t be wasted, and Russell didn’t have room for all of his when he retired off the farm, so he thought he’d put them all to good use. He called a meeting in 2016 to gauge interest for an Arrowtown MenzShed after seeing the concept in Australia. The other blokes were keen and although it took four years to battle their way through the consents and red tape MenzShed volunteers were soon in demand doing odd jobs and working on community projects all over the basin. They now have 50 members, including a growing women’s group using their shed adjacent to the camping ground. “I get great satisfaction out of seeing MenzShed being used and seeing what these ladies have achieved,” Russell says. Russell’s also doubled as a limo driver and is probably best known for taking on the most undesirable role in the community – ‘Wasp Man’, which he does for free. Wasp wings shudder when they see him arrive with his bucket of blitzing powder, which used to be supplied by the Queenstown Lakes District Council. Red tape tried to get in the way there too. “The council wouldn’t supply it anymore as I didn’t fi t their health and safety regulations, so I sourced it in Auckland and Arrowtown Village Association now pays,” he says. It’s not always a thankless task. Occasionally Russell receives the odd gin or wine.
Not surprisingly, he was awarded Arrowtown’s Unsung Hero Award this year for a job well done.

COMMUNITY NOTES
Queenstown Rotary Duck Race: A splash of fun for charity
Mark your calendars for Sunday, 3 November, as the annual Queenstown Rotary Duck Race promises to be an exhilarating event for the entire community. Set to kick off at 3pm at Horne Creek, starting from the Village Green, this beloved tradition combines excitement with philanthropy –aiming to raise around $8,000 for two vital local charities: the Queenstown Coastguard and the Otago Southland Helicopter Rescue Trust.
The race will see around 40 cheerful rubber ducks floating downstream, each representing a corporate participant in the Corporate Race or the Public Race, along with two participating schools, who will dress their ducks for that special race. With every purchase, community members not only stand a chance to win fantastic prizes but also contribute to the ongoing efforts of these essential services that keep our region safe.
The Queenstown Coastguard plays a crucial role in ensuring safety on the water, providing emergency search and rescue operations with a dedicated team of volunteers. Proceeds from the Duck Race help fund their vital equipment and training, ensuring they can respond swiftly to emergencies and protect lives.
Equally important, the Otago Southland Helicopter Rescue Trust offers rapid air support during medical emergencies and search operations. Their helicopter service is a lifeline in critical situations, especially in remote areas where every second counts. The funds raised during the Duck Race will support their operations, allowing them to continue their life-saving missions.
The event’s success is bolstered by the ongoing support from numerous local businesses, including Formatt, MacTodd, Craig’s Investment Partners, PAK’nSAVE, Todd & Walker, Gantley’s Tavern, and many more. Their generous contributions not only enhance the race but also foster a strong sense of community spirit.
After the race, join the festivities at the Beechtree (around 4.30pm) for an after party featuring food, drinks and entertainment. Last year’s champion, the Queenstown Ice Arena, will be back to defend their title, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
Queenstown’s alpine ski racing sensation Alice Robinson has started her 2024/25 season with a bang.
The 22-year-old finished second at the FIS Giant Slalom World Cup season opener in Sölden, Austria.
“I am really happy, I haven’t been on the podium in Sölden since I won here five years ago, it is one of my favourite places to race,” Robinson said after Saturday’s race.
Wearing bib two, she put down an electrifying first run, dominating the steep section and subsequent transition onto the flatter section of the piste, which was causing a number of the top athletes in the field to lose precious milliseconds.
After run one, she was sitting in second position, just +0.22 seconds behind run one leader American powerhouse Mikaela Shiffrin.
“I felt really solid on the top section, I felt confident and not too nervous in the start and I understood what I needed to do. I think I attacked really well and skied the pitch a lot better than I had when we trained here so I was really happy with that,” Robinson said.
With the start order reversed for run two, Robinson was the second to last athlete to race down the course that was starting to see a deterioration in surface condition due to the 28 athletes who had gone down before her. But she put down another blistering run, using her strength and power to maintain a strong, quick line throughout the bumpy course. Robinson finished in second place, just +0.17 of a second behind winner Federica Brignone of Italy.
“The second run was really challenging, especially on the top section, the steeps were bumpy and I have always found it quite challenging when the snow is soft, has a lot of moisture and is bumpy but I have been working hard on this so I am happy!”
Brignone claimed the 28th World Cup victory of her career, while Julia Scheib of Austria claimed third.
“This event is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, have fun, and support two organisations that do incredible work in our region,” Rotary Club Duck Organiser Tim Wilshire says. “We’re grateful for the ongoing support from local businesses and look forward to seeing everyone at the race.”
The Queenstown Rotary Duck Race promises a fantastic day out, filled with laughter, friendly competition and the spirit of giving back. Families and friends are encouraged to come out, cheer for their ducks and enjoy a day of community camaraderie. With prizes, entertainment and the chance to make a difference, it’s a quacking good time you won’t want to miss!
Second place for Robinson Rob Roy Glacier bridge open again
Work to upgrade the Rob Roy suspension bridge has been completed and it is now open to the public again.
DOC Operations Manager Charlie Sklenar says the area, in Mt Aspiring National Park, sees a huge number of visitors, especially during the summer.
“Engineering advice sought by DOC last year showed both Rob Roy and Blue Pools bridges could not sustain their current usage, and the Makarora River suspension bridge needed to be fully replaced,” he says.
“For the Rob Roy Glacier Track, visitor numbers were projected to increase from their previous daily averages of 180 people. As a result, a safety assessment was made which led to the decision to upgrade the bridge.”
Work to upgrade the Rob Roy suspension bridge included in-depth engineering, geotechnical and design assessments, complex rock drilling and structural work to improve the bridge’s ability to bear weight.
“Engineers have now inspected the completed bridge work and with all testing successfully certified late last week, we are happy to say the bridge is now open again to the public.
“Our field team has now removed the closure signage, and the DOC website has been updated to show that the track has reopened.
“We know people will take the opportunity to make the most of the Rob Roy Track and its upgraded bridge, and we’re looking forward to a great summer.”
Construction work on the Blue Pools and Makarora River bridges and replacement of the raised timber boardwalk connecting these two bridges is ongoing but should be completed this summer.
The women’s FIS GS World Cup circuit continues on 1 December (NZT) with the Killington World Cup, in the US.

Librarian Profile
Kia Ora!
Welcome to this month’s QLDC Libraries reading list! Our recommendations promise a journey through captivating stories and ideas. Happy reading!
From Kyoto to Queenstown: My Unexpected Journey to Becoming a Library Assistant
Kia ora, Queenstown! My name is Rika, and while my story begins in the ancient city of Kyoto, Japan, it’s Queenstown where I’ve found my new home - and a job that feels like a dream come true.
I first came to New Zealand in February 2020, just before the world changed in ways none of us could have predicted. I was only supposed to visit my sister and her family in Auckland for three weeks, but then Covid-19 had other plans. Like many, I suddenly found myself stranded as all flights were cancelled. What was meant to be a quick family visit stretched into something much longer. After the first lockdown was lifted, I met someone truly special, who has since become the love of my life.
Fast forward to 2021: He took me to Queenstown for a holiday. I’d heard about the stunning landscapes and wild nature, but I wasn’t prepared for just how beautiful it really is here. It turns out that Covid had another surprise waiting for us — our return to Auckland was delayed because of another lockdown there, and before we knew it, Queenstown had become our accidental (but very welcome) new home. It must be fate - because we can’t imagine being anywhere else now.
Not only do we get to live surrounded by mountains and lakes in a mosquitofree zone (truly a gift from the heavens), but we’ve also found ourselves part of a wonderfully diverse and welcoming community. Queenstown’s openhearted, inclusive culture makes it easy for anyone to feel at home, and we’ve been so grateful for the warm embrace of the people here.
This past March, I joined the team at Frankton Library as a library assistant. Let me tell you, I have always loved books, but now I get to work with them every day! Whether it’s shelving new arrivals, chatting with patrons, or recommending my latest favourite read, I’m constantly surrounded by stories,
ideas, and great company. And yes, shelving books might sound mundane to some, but to me, it’s oddly satisfying - like a mini treasure hunt, except the treasure is perfectly ordered shelves.
The library is filled with a wide variety of collections, so naturally, I’ve added way too many titles to my ‘must-read’ list. My reading list keeps growing and growing, and I’m desperately trying to accelerate my reading speed to keep up! If only I could borrow some superpower that lets me absorb books at lightning speed... though I’m still on the lookout for that special edition library card.
One of the things I love most about working at Frankton Library is how it allows me to connect with the community on a deeper level. I get to meet people from all walks of life, each with their own story to tell. Whether they’re looking for a good book to read, seeking some quiet time, or just stopping by for a chat, I’ve had the privilege of helping them find what they need. And, I must admit, I’ve also been sneaking in some book recommendations for myself - it’s hard not to!
Queenstown has offered me not just a place to live, but a community I truly cherish. This town’s beauty is undeniable, but what really makes it special is the people who live here. I feel incredibly lucky that fate ( a few Covid-related detours) led me to this gorgeous part of the world, where I get to combine my passion for books with the joy of working in such a vibrant place.
So if you ever pop into Frankton Library, come say hello! Whether you need help finding a book or just want to chat about life (or even the best way to organize a bookshelf - I have strong opinions on this!), I’ll be there, happy to help. Queenstown has given me so much already, and I’m thrilled to be part of the community that makes it so special.
The life changing magic of tidying (part.1) / Spark joy (part.2) by Marie Kondo
This book was not merely a method of tidying up, but also embraced as a life philosophy in Japan. It was later introduced globally as the KonMariMethod. “The space in which we live should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.”
A geek in Japan by Hector Garcia
There are many books that introduce Japan, but I was truly impressed and convinced by how this book accurately captures and clearly explains Japanese culture. It was refreshing to see everyday phenomena and aspects, which are so familiar to me as a Japanese person, explained from a different perspective.
The Courage to be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi
Adlerian Psychology is explained in an incredibly easyto understand way through a dialogue format. There were many eye-opening insights, and this book gave me strong encouragement when facing the dramatic life changes brought on by Covid in 2020.
