LAKES WEEKLY

BULLETIN

Goodbye and thanks

LOCALLY

After six-and-a-half years as GM of Queenstown Media Group, it’s time to say farewell. The decision comes with much sadness. The team I’ve worked with at QMG has remained mostly the same over that entire period, which in Queenstown is a feat in itself, and they are an incredibly talented, welcoming bunch, who are passionate about the products they deliver each week, including the Lakes Weekly Bulletin, Queenstown App, the Outlet Podcast, and the Lakes Business Quarterly.

While my reason for leaving is entirely to move to the next stage of life, it’s also without doubt that publishing and media is at the forefront of momentous structural change, which is only accelerating. We’re all witnessing national media shrink as advertising dollars disappear for traditional media and that also impacts us here in Queenstown. The role technology plays is also increasing rapidly, so there comes a time to recognise when your term at the helm is passing, and it’s time for someone with more modern skills than mine. We’ve certainly experienced more than our fair share of challenges across the years, and I’ve been proud to lead a team willing to embrace these and remain a key part of the town’s media landscape, which has also been a key driver of our success.

This is an incredibly special and unique place. We punch well above our weight delivering an extraordinary experience for visitors and dollars to central government. Many fellow kiwis love to bash Queenstown, not appreciating the role we play in bringing billions in tourism dollars to NZ. And while the pollies love the dollars we create, they’re less enthusiastic about investing to get the region match fit to deliver on the visitor promise into the future. But our “to hell with them, let’s just get on attitude” will see the region continue to be an entrepreneurial powerhouse delivering for visitors and Wellington. LWB always endeavours to be a voice for our community, and we’ve championed planned growth as good for the region, but we’ve also joined voices calling for investment in everything from homes, decent health, and infrastructure, to a more stable workforce to facilitate the growth. We are a welcoming community, and most are pretty much on board for growth. We have inspirational leaders with vision who love this place as I do and believe in its future as a global environmental leader. Our entrepreneurial attitude is in Queenstown’s DNA, always has been!

I’ve always experienced enthusiasm from you for what the whole team at QMG is delivering and I hope we’ve been able to tell your stories appropriately. As I leave QMG this week, I’d like to especially say thank you, our readers, who are so supportive, and most especially the incredible team I’ve worked alongside. Andy, Cat, Ferg, Jess, Kanika, Kylee, Patricia, Paul, Scott, Sue and Brent - you have been an inspiration. David Gibbs - General Manager

Hot pool plans making a splash

Hot pools are back on the drawing board for downtown Queenstown.

Queenstown Hot Pools plans to open a new venture in Brecon Street by April next year, with 10 private spas, two plunge pools, change rooms and an office / reception building. It will surround the existing Queenstown Mini Golf site, which will continue to operate.

Meanwhile, Ngāi Tahu is again interested in building a much larger communal hot pools attraction at the nearby multi-billion dollar Lakeview site. It is partnering with Lakeview developer Ninety Four-Feet. Ngāi Tahu representatives presented their plans to councillors at a workshop last week, although they are still in the early stages.

Queenstown Hot Pools Limited’s Tim McMahon tells Lakes Weekly Bulletin the Brecon St project is much more advanced, with resource consent already submitted to council.

“If everything progresses smoothly, we anticipate opening in April 2025, ready to welcome locals and visitors in time for the cooler months,” McMahon says.

The facility will feature nine private small hot pools and and one larger hot pool, as well as the plunge pools, all provided with privacy by a serpentine wall. It will employ 5-10 staff initially, across operations, customer service, and maintenance. Pricing is still being worked through but McMahon says the aim is to cater for a range of budgets and make it accessible to locals and visitors alike.

It’s more similar in scope to the Instagram-famous Onsen Hot Pools Retreat and Day Spa in Arthurs Point, than the Ngāi Tahu Lakeview project, which has been mooted for more than a decade. McMahon believes Queenstown Hot Pools and Lakeview will complement each other, “adding diversity to Queenstown’s wellness and leisure landscape”.

The Brecon St site, near the new bottom terminal for Skyline’s Gondola, has long been earmarked for a multi-million hotel development. The street itself has been upgraded through the streetscapes project and the massive Upper Village development, anchored by Kingpin, has opened in recent years, although one of its landmark premises has struggled to retain tenants, with The Bavarian replaced by The Assembly Gastropub, which itself was only

open a matter of months.

McMahon says the hot pools offer a much-needed leisure activity for Queenstown that can be delivered in a relatively short time frame. “The hotel is a much bigger and longer-term project which we will keep as an option going forward.”

That means Queenstown Mini Golf will remain open. “The feedback we have been getting from the community has been overwhelmingly positive and it’s great to have such a unique attraction in town. Having said that, we will keep our options open.”

Melbourne-based entrepreneur McMahon is also behind plans for floating sauna and plunge experience ‘Aluume’ at Frankton Marina, although that resource consent application is presently on hold. Meanwhile, Aucklanders Dominic Bowden, the former host of The X Factor NZ, and Andrew Glenn are progressing their plans for a floating sauna and plunge pools near St Omer Wharf downtown.

Fast-Track project could be scaled back

Developers behind Coronet Village are reviewing the scale of the project as opposition mounts from locals.

The proposal, one of nine locally on the Government’s Fast-Track path, includes a gondola from Malaghans Valley floor up to the skifield, but also a subdivision of around 780 homes and commercial premises.

There’s also a summit restaurant and loop walk, a world-class mountain bike hub, a base for an iwi charity, a combined primary and secondary school, an international boarding school, and 600-800 car parks.

Bernard Cleary, Rod Drury, NZSki and Te Tapu o Tāne, are in a consortium behind the project, located between Arthurs Point and Arrowtown, with Ben Farrell from Cue Environmental managing the planning component.

The aim is to elevate Coronet Peak into “a globally recognised destination while delivering social, cultural, environmental, climate and economic benefits over time, and aligning with local infrastructure capacity and community aspirations”, they say.

But the scale of the development, particularly the housing, has worried locals. They’ve formed a lobby group Malaghans Valley Protection Society (MVPS), which has now grown to 200 members, while other organisations, such as the heavyweights Soho Property Ltd and QEII National Trust have also raised concerns.

On Friday, Ben Farrell released a statement on behalf of the consortium detailing who is responsible for each element of the project.

Cleary is managing the housing, on behalf of the owners of 88 Coronet Peak Station Road, while Drury, NZSki, and Te Tapu o Tāne are focused on the gondola, mountain bike hub, tourism infrastructure, and environmental initiatives within the project.

“Mr Cleary recognises that the idea of high-density housing has raised concerns within the community,” the statement reads.

“In response, he is reviewing the scope and nature of both the housing and commercial elements to ensure the development can better align with local expectations and priorities.”

The next step is to listen to key concerns, they say, and a public meeting has been mooted.

“The original submitted concept masterplan was conceptual and is evolving, and will continue to do so. We acknowledge concerns raised to date from some key stakeholders, including Soho Property Ltd, QEII National Trust and some community members.

“The consortium is looking to better align with these key stakeholders and remain committed to open, respectful engagement.”

MVPS chairman James Hall says the organisation wants a public meeting to get some answers first hand, but acknowledges much of the uncertainty has been created by the Fast-Track legislation itself, which is still fairly opaque.

“It concerns me that Coronet Village was accepted by the advisory panel when no environmental impacts were considered, and there was no independent ratification or information from third parties. They were totally reliant on the applicant’s information,” Hall says.

“Bernard Cleary and the consortium have stated last week that they may scale things back and talk to the community, and we look forward to that. They have also shared their plans for Coronet Village with us over the weekend which is a good step. It means we now can have a more constructive discussion.”

MVPS meanwhile has asked local experts to provide insight into the project, as it stands. They include Bruce McLeod of Aurum Survey Consultants, Paddy Baxter of Baxter Design, and Glenn Davis of E3 Scientific. Mana Tāhuna and tourism company AuthenticAs have also provided comment.

McLeod says the site is one of the worst locations in the basin for remoteness to services and the development would have an impact on roads and the environment.

“Residents would need to drive everywhere and any eco-gains from the gondola would be offset substantially by trying to heat shaded homes and dispose of effluent,” McLeod says.

“Instead of developing a damp, cold site in the upper catchment of Lake Hayes, we should be intensifying the existing urban areas with density next to existing service hubs.”

Baxter says it appears the development would be contrary to the key relevant landscape-related objectives and policies of the Operative and Proposed District Plans, while the others raise concerns about the impact on Lake Hayes and dark sky corridor that exists between Arthurs Point and Arrowtown.

Farrell says the consortium is committed to transparency and regular communication.

See lwb.co.nz and the Queenstown App for more details on their concerns.

CRIMELINE

Dad sparks airport call out

An unwitting Queenstown dad sparked a Police alert last Thursday after members of the public saw him with a rifle lying in the grass near Queenstown Airport. Officers were called to land off Mountain Ash Drive near the back of aerodrome at 10.55am, 10 October. Sergeant Tracy Haggart says they located the 39-year-old man, who explained he was teaching his young son to shoot rabbits with an air rifle.

“He was spoken to and given some education about choosing more appropriate locations that aren’t in view of the public,” Haggart says. Legally, anyone over 16 can have an air rifle but they still must be responsible and use it safely, shooting away from public view and seeking landowner permission.

Burglary

and fraud

A 38-year-old Queenstown woman was arrested for burglary and fraud after a search warrant at 1.15pm on Friday, 11 October.

Police recovered property that had allegedly been stolen from Tahuna Pod Hostel on 13-15 September. Bags mainly containing ski gear, credit cards, a laptop and clothing were stolen in the burglary. The woman has been charged with burglary and using a document for pecuniary advantage and will appear in the Queenstown District Court on 21 October.

While executing that search warrant, Police located a 60-year-old Christchurch man who was wanted for stealing a vehicle in Queenstown in August. He was arrested and charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and will also appear in court on 21 October.

Young teens causing havoc in early hours

Some Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country residents are fed up with teenagers as young as 14 roaming the streets in the early hours, kicking cars and rubbish skips and throwing stones at cars and trucks on Ladies Mile.

Community social media posts show growing concerns about the incidents, some at 4.30am. One resident claimed young boys up on a walking track off Ada Place, threw stones at her vehicle early one morning hitting the side and windscreen. The posts urge anyone who knows these kids to let them know how dangerous it is, as someone travelling at 100km/hr could get seriously hurt. Police are urging residents and witnesses to report all incidents like this involving suspicious or concerning behaviour to them. Haggart says they respond where available when incidents are reported.

“Receiving as much detail as possible describing the offenders and their actions is important to try and assist in identifying them,” she says. People should also take note of any address they may go into or vehicles that they may be using which assists with inquiries.

Community Patrol volunteers help patrol problem areas. Police regularly carry out night-time patrols but knowing patterns and timings of any offending assists greatly in hopefully being in the right place at the right time, she says. “We rely on the public for that information.”

Parents should always know where their children are to help keep them safe and out of trouble.

Teenage boys throw drink and film female cyclist

Two teenage boys, wearing full face helmets and on a black electric motorcycle, threw a drink at a female cyclist on a cycle trail near Slopehill Road last Wednesday afternoon. They are described as around 14 and 17 years old. Police were called about the incident, which happened at 4pm, and are appealing for information.

“If anybody knows who the males may be, or if they have had any similar issues, they should report this to the Police,” Haggart says. A letter circulated in mailboxes in the area says the woman was assaulted by two teenage males, one filming the incident on his mobile phone, as she rode towards Frankton. The letter appeals to the community and parents to raise this with their children “so that they are made aware that there are consequences to their actions”.

COMMUNITY NOTES

Level up your business: Embrace sustainability and security at the Queenstown Wao Summit sessions

The upcoming Queenstown sessions at the Wao Summit offer two dynamic opportunities for businesses to enhance their operations and align with purpose-driven and secure practices.

The first session, Go B Corp for Good: The What, Why & How of B Corp, led by Tim Jones, kicks off on Thursday, 31 October, at 1.30pm. Tim, New Zealand’s leading B Corp expert, will guide attendees through the process of leveraging the B Corp framework to implement better business practices. B Corp certification signifies that a company meets the highest standards of social and environmental impact, ensuring that it operates as a force for good. Tim’s experience spans consulting with organisations like Meridian Energy and Cookie Time, helping them transition to purpose-led business models. His insights are invaluable for businesses looking to adopt more meaningful and sustainable approaches, making this session a must-attend for anyone serious about levelling up their impact and performance.

On the same day at 3pm, Cybersecurity in the Green Economy addresses the growing importance of digital security as businesses transition to more sustainable, carbon-zero operations. Led by cybersecurity expert Nick Baty, this session will explore the vulnerabilities that arise in the green economy, where digital innovation often comes at the cost of heightened cyber threats. With expertise in cyber strategy, governance, and risk management, Nick will share practical insights on safeguarding businesses in this new digital landscape. As businesses increasingly rely on digital tools for sustainability and efficiency, managing cyber risks is more critical than ever. This session provides key strategies to ensure that as your business becomes more ecofriendly, it also remains digitally secure.

Both sessions offer invaluable guidance for businesses in Queenstown to elevate their approach to sustainability and security in today’s complex landscape. All sessions are at Te Atamira in Frankton.

If you want more, you can head over to Wānaka for a full Better Business day programme dedicated to Business with Purpose. Attendees will explore cutting-edge sustainable practices that not only enhance profitability but also contribute positively to the environment and society. The Better Business day provides a platform for meaningful growth through workshops, expert panels, and networking sessions, enabling business owners to implement impactful strategies that drive success while fostering a sustainable and ethical business culture.

Central Lakes Polyfest returns for fifth year

The 2024 programme of events for Central Lakes Polyfest will be the biggest one yet. Organisers are excited to deliver the two-day programme of noncompetitive cultural performing arts at Queenstown Events Centre. Over 1,000 participants from around Central Otago, from early childhood through to secondary students, will take the stage.

Aroha Solomon looks after the Queenstown side of Polyfest – previously a lot of the communications between the event and the schools in our region were via email, but now Solomon can be here on the ground and make contact. She looks after all the surrounding regions including Clyde, Alexandra and Wānaka. She’s looking forward to the upcoming two days of performances.

“We’re a non-competitive cultural event, so we do encourage Maori and Pasifika arts and culture, however our Polyfest is open to all people that want to participate,” Solomon says. “It’s 70% non-Maori, in fact. It’s just about having that platform and that showcase for people to be able to get up and celebrate their culture.”

The event is well supported by local schools and teachers, who get behind the initiative and are pivotal in helping to make the event run smoothly. For those wanting to check out the event, it’s a gold-coin Koha, while to register to be involved is free. Solomon wanted to make special thanks to all that help bring this together.

“There’s always room for everybody to partake. We’ve got some great volunteers, we’ve got 15 from Wakatipu High School. The thing about the volunteers is that it’s all about empowering those – especially Maori and Pasifika rangatahi, children, to have a go at being leaders in their own right. Day one, they’re following the lead of our key leaders, then day two, they’re almost running the show.”

They love to see new volunteers come through each year to support and guide them into becoming their own leaders – it’s a big part of their Kaupapa. They’re excited to welcome us all to the action-packed schedule ahead and are receiving lots of feedback from excited groups who are getting their performances polished and ready.

Central Lakes Polyfest will take place 9am - 3pm Wednesday, 23 October, and 9.30am - 2pm, Thursday, 24 October. For more info head to miharo.co.nz

NEWS IN BRIEF

‘Never been done trick’ lands

Wānaka snowboarder Rocco Jamieson has claimed his career best World Cup result, with second place at the Chur FIS Big Air in Switzerland. Jamieson dropped into the night finals under floodlights, with thousands of fans gathered around the landing of the big air enjoying the festival scene. He put down a ‘never been done’ trick in competition - the Rubix Flip, followed by a switch backside 1620 Japan. Reigning Snowboard Big Air World Champion Taiga Hasegawa of Japan finished in first place, hitting a cab 1800 Weddle grab. Frenchman Romain Allemand was third. Fellow Kiwi Lyon Farrell also qualified through to the finals, finishing in ninth position. Combined with his third-place finish at Winter Games NZ in August 2024, Jamieson is leading the overall FIS Park and Pipe World Cup standings. The Snowboard Big Air World Cup circuit continues in early December with the Beijing Big Air World Cup.

Let somebody know

Two young female kayakers who sparked a Search and Rescue operation last Thursday did the right thing by giving a friend an expected return time, Queenstown Sergeant Tracy Haggart says. The women, aged 18 and 20, were found in bush north of 25 Mile Creek at 2.30am Friday, 11 October. The SAR operation had been launched at 11.30pm. “They’d told someone when they should be back at their expected destination and that person contacted us,” Haggart says. The young women had gone to recover gear left behind from another trip but couldn’t locate it. They got caught out when night time arrived. SAR volunteers, the Coastguard, a helicopter and SAR dog were deployed and they were found in the bush, unable to get back to Glenorchy Road, cold and wet, but otherwise unharmed. Haggart says it’s important that Police are notified straight away so that plans can be put in place quickly. “Always have a plan and give the details to someone else and have all the right equipment and safety gear so that you’re well prepared if you get caught out at night,” she says. “They told someone and that’s of paramount importance.”

Marathon record

A record number of runners will run the full 42km distance at the Queenstown Marathon next month. The event, which is celebrating its 10th year, takes place on Saturday, 16 November. Thousands of runners will tackle one of the four distances; the marathon, the half marathon, 10km and Kids Run. They include 40 ‘Founding Runners’, who’ve taken part every year since the first in 2014. There are still places available. Queenstown Marathon regional director Amy MacCormack says: “Now is the perfect time to sign up and join thousands of others on the start line.” For more information and to enter the 2024 New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon presented by ASICS visit queenstown-marathon.co.nz.

Pax Assadi - Secrets

Hi, Pax Assadi here. It’s really nice to see you. Is that a new top? It looks great on you, the colour really compliments your skin tone. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Queenstown. I’ve been busy with life— water blasting my deck, building flat pack furniture, and making award-winning television (Watch Raised By Refugees now on NEON or Sky Go).

Hey, so… I need to tell you something BUT I need you to keep it a secret. Can you do that? Ok, cool. Then come to Sherwood, and I’ll share this secret with you in the form of standup comedy. Ideally, you come alone, but if you must, you may bring one other person—maybe a significant other or close friend. Coming in a large group is also acceptable, but you have to make sure that everyone in this group understands that what I’m going to share with you is highly confidential. Our obsession with Feijoas and the joy they’ve brought to Kate Evans

Kate Evans is a Kiwi whose fascination with the quintessential New Zealand fruit, the feijoa, has grown over the years, especially in her time living overseas. She’s written a book all about the joy it’s brought her and the fixation with the fruit around the world – it’s called Feijoa, and Evans will talk about it at this year’s Queenstown Writers Festival, which kicks off at the end of this month. The book delves into the history of feijoas and the inspiring dance between people and plants. It explores how we need and change each other, and the surprising ways certain species worm their way into our imaginations, our stomachs and our hearts. Evans combined her journalistic background with travel and history to bring Feijoa to life, and is really looking forward to heading down here to talk all about it.

“I’m so excited – I haven’t brought the book to the South Island at all yet, so this will be its first South Island appearance,” Evans says. “Sometimes people say that feijoas are a North Island thing, but there actually grow extremely well in a lot of areas in the South Island – even in Southland in some places. I think if you’ve got the right microclimate they grow incredibly well.”

Evans lived overseas from ages 18 - 30, and whenever she’d get a hold of a feijoa in that time, she’d find herself feeling homesick. Cutting it open and smelling that distinct, familiar smell would transport her back to her childhood, growing up in the rural North Island. One of the most exciting things about coming back to New Zealand in 2014 was of course, “Finally I can have a full feijoa season and I can eat as many as I want.”

It was after returning home that she took some time to reflect on what it meant to be a New Zealander and what it meant for her to be living back in New Zealand – for the first time as an adult.

“I thought ‘that’s weird that the feijoa is the symbol of home for me when it’s not a native plant.’ I knew it came from South America, and in my years away I spent quite a lot of time in South America – I had an internship in Argentina and went back for work multiple times, I spoke Spanish and I really love South America. I feel super alive when I’m there. I found that interesting – there’s not that many links between New Zealand and South America, but that’s one of them.”

Her obsession with the delicious fruit drove her to start Googling and researching it – the story grew from there. She moved on to work in Indonesia, working with a tropical forest research organisation and was interviewing a lot of scientists who were studying the ways that people use different plants and the roles they had in their lives. This work shifted Evans’ way of thinking and over ten years she started to tack smaller trips onto her work trips, to go to different places around the world that have feijoas. She continued to work on the book on the side before getting it published after a few hurdles.

“My dream is for it to get translated into Spanish and Portuguese, so that people in its countries of origin can read it, in Uruguay and Brazil. I hope to one day return and bring the book to some of the people I met in Brazil and Uruguay and share it with them.”

Evans often gets asked if she ever thought there would be enough content to write a whole book about the history of feijoas, and it still surprises her that there was – and that it is all so interesting. She’s delighted to see it come to life, for now in Australia and New Zealand, and hopefully around the world in the future.

“What I discovered as well is that in telling this one story, it touches on so many other fascinating parts of science, history and people. The sessions at the festival, I think, will be a journey through lots of different parts of the world and lots of different facets of food, culture and life,” Evans says.

A Feijoa Fixation with Kate Evans will take place at Rippon Wānaka on Thursday, 31 October, at 5.30pm and at Te Atamira in Queenstown on Friday, 1 November, at 2.30pm. You can see the full programme for Queenstown Writers Festival and grab tickets at qtwritersfestival.nz/programme

We’ve got a double pass to give away to one Lakes Weekly Bulletin reader! Simply send an email to info@qmg.co.nz telling us what you love about Feijoas and we’ll select a winner at the end of the day next Tuesday.

How confident are you?

Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce is collecting data from members for its quarterly business confidence survey, which takes the temperature of the town. The survey closes this Friday, 25 October. The data will be fed into the National Chamber network, so the Chamber can track how Queenstown is going compared to other regions, helping to strengthen national advocacy around shared issues. Current national consultation includes ACC Levy Consultation and Accredited Employer Work Visa processing times. Meanwhile, Hospitality NZ is advocating on behalf of hospo venue owners who’ve been stung with massive hikes in council fees for outdoor dining. Read more on that on lwb.co.nz and the Queenstown App.

30 years and counting

Air New Zealand celebrated 30 years of flying direct between Auckland and Queenstown on Thursday, a service which has had a monumental impact on the tourist town In the past decade alone, the airline has carried over seven million customers between the two destinations and this coming summer will operate up to 116 return services a week, increasing to 156 over the Christmas period. It is Air NZ’s third-most popular domestic route and also an important cargo link between the lower South Island and the international flight hub, Auckland - that cargo includes some 250 tonnes of lobster carried north from Queenstown each year. “About half the passengers who travel through Queenstown Airport fly this route,” Queenstown Airport CEO Glen Sowry says. “Its introduction 30 years ago helped forge strong links between NZ’s largest city and the Southern Lakes region. It enables efficient, convenient travel for business or leisure, as well as creating long-haul connections with Asia, North America, and Europe.”

My Life Story

ELAINE KIRKLAND

You can count on Elaine

The eldest daughter of renowned Routeburn Station runholder ‘Wattie’ Watson, Elaine Kirkland has always been a practical woman who remains unfazed and gets the job done.

That’s probably why she’s been at the forefront of some of Glenorchy’s most successful fundraising campaigns, a community building with medical rooms and library, and a community swimming pool among them. Elaine’s had a good go at getting a local museum up and running too, serving on various committees for more than 20 years, also running Glenorchy’s Spring Flower Show which just celebrated its 72nd year.

Elaine was also a highly trusted member of Blanket Bay’s housekeeping team where discretion was key. Even at 77 she still ‘can’t confi rm’ which famous movie stars she cleaned up after. However, she once tipped out two half-fi lled glasses of red wine left in a room by American guests, causing quite a stir. “It was a $350 bottle they’d left to breathe while out for the day,” Elaine grins.

Most of her childhood was spent on Routeburn Station, initially run by her mother’s parents Lewis and Helen Groves then bought by Wattie in 1954, and on Wattie’s Speargrass Flat farm. At fi rst Wattie worked the station all week and Speargrass Flat, where his wife and fi ve kids lived, at weekends. “Mum would drive him to Wilson’s Bay on Sunday, and he’d walk to Glenorchy then Harry Bryant picked him up in his little boat and took him to Kinloch.” In 1958, aged 11, she left Arrowtown’s two-room school for life back on the station, and Correspondence School.

“We used horses to cross the Dart River if the lake was rough, or we’d go down to Kinloch and cross to Glenorchy in Harry’s boat, no life jackets, often at night if the pictures were on in Glenorchy.”

The Lake Hayes Show, then in March, was a big highlight, and with no road then to Queenstown head of the lake families packed onto the TSS Earnslaw. “We got a new dress for summer every spring and wore it to the show,” Elaine recalls. Even better, sweets were sold in the boat tearooms. Holidays were spent helping Connie Bryant make lunches for Routeburn Bus tourists, 300 a day in peak summer.

The family had various governesses and after two years at Timaru Girls’ High from fi fth form, Elaine and one of the governesses ran the Glenorchy grocery store. “I came home after boarding school and Dad said, ‘Here’s the shop to run’.”

At 20, Elaine married Dunedin builder Ian Kirkland, who went on to become a respected, long-time Queenstown Lakes District councillor.

Ian (‘Kirkie’) scored a job on a rugby trip to Australia and their year there turned into 15 overseas.

Back living with Elaine’s family in Invercargill, Ian got off the phone one day and said, ‘Where’s Algeria because I just took a job there?’ Elaine says. Off

they went in 1975 with a six-week-old baby and preschooler for a threeyear adventure. “We didn’t really know what we were going to, so we didn’t worry.”

Ian worked for a big American infrastructure company, which also saw them doing two stints in Papua New Guinea. Ian also worked in Iran, where Elaine and the children were due to join him, just before trouble and unrest struck. “I didn’t get there. I was disappointed. It was the time of the Shah being kicked out.” With shooting breaking out Ian and the crew, working in an isolated area, had to escape to Teheran awaiting a fl ight out. “He said it was absolutely dreadful like we saw recently with masses of people trying to grab hold of, and get onto, every plane.”

After no ability to communicate for a month Ian turned up in a taxi in Invercargill with a giant doll and electronic robot for the kids. “Three Americans and Ian locked themselves in a stone building for four days playing poker and he won all the money,” Elaine chuckles. The Persian rug he bought her turned up three months later still tied to his suitcase that had been lost in the chaos.

After their last stint in Papua New Guinea, they moved back to Glenorchy in 1984, throwing their energies behind community projects and major fundraising drives, earning Elaine a Heart of the District Award in 2006. They also owned grocery stores in Glenorchy at times. Having lived in semidangerous territory with kids and no phone, Elaine had to dig for patience during the 1994 Glenorchy Race Day fl oods. “The drunks were swimming on the racetrack and the Police were trapped between washouts on the Glenorchy Road,” she says. “This woman saw Choppy’s helicopter and ran into the store, desperate, saying, ‘I need to get out! I have a baby!’, so I told her people have been having babies here for 150 years and survived,” Elaine grins.

As in Elaine style: “You just do what you’ve got to do and get on with it.”
