Coronet Peak gondola is a no brainer
When a new Government comes in and starts talking about fast-track consenting and bypassing the Resource Management Act (RMA), long term residents of this region have the right to feel nervous. Just as our land was pillaged and permanently scarred for a quick buck during the gold rush of the 1860’s, the property development gold rushes of the last 25 years are leaving their own permanent scars.
Not all bad, but plenty that would have been a lot worse had the developments both residential and commercial not been put through a vigorous landscape, traffic and design assessment. Despite the obvious housing shortage this region and indeed the country is experiencing, nothing good will come of fasttrack consenting poorly located and designed mass housing developments. However, there is also a potential golden opportunity for our region from sidestepping the RMA. Do you think Queenstown’s Number One tourism experience would exist if it had to work its way through the RMA? I think not. Despite looking rather ugly right now with the logging operations on Bob’s Peak, The Skyline Gondola is just one of those wonderful things that would have been next to impossible to build from scratch if conceived after the RMA came into effect in 1991.
So, my ears pricked up when I heard of plans for a gondola up to Coronet Peak from the valley floor. How good would that be. Not only as a tourism attraction in its own right but as a transport option for those poor unfortunately Aussies and Aucklanders (and some locals who should know better) who turn the ski field road into a dog’s breakfast at 9am on a bluebird powder day. I don’t know about you, but sometimes the fastest way up on a winter morning is to help these poor sods in their rental cars fit their chains, which they have absolutely no idea how to hold let alone put on the vehicle. Even without the need for chains, the very presence of snow on the side of the road plants a level of fear in some drivers who crawl up a perfectly clear road at 10kmph. Rather than rage, I often put my mind to the “why”. Why is self-driving the best and sometimes, when the buses are full, only option? It seems crazy and now thanks to the vision and financial ability of our own adopted son of Queenstown, Rod Drury, and his band of brilliant collaborators, the opportunity is there.
Let’s take this fast-track opportunity and I challenge anyone who thinks it’s a bad idea to speak up now and put your case forward, or forever hold your peace. Because in my opinion, this is a no brainer and the best legacy result a fast track sidestep of the RMA could conjure up. In the spirit of fast-track consenting, it’s vital the conversation is had, fast. Here’s my email. I’d love to hear from you. Scott Stevens scott@qmg.co.nz

NEWS IN BRIEF
Jim Boult, CNZM recognised in King’s Honours list
Jim Boult (CNZM) has been appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to local government, tourism, and the community in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours list.
The former Queenstown Lakes District mayor has led and advocated across a range of roles and organisations over a 40-year period.
$80million Glendhu Golf Course development underway
Construction of 42 private residences is about to commence alongside the $80million Glendhu Championship Golf Couse development, near Wanaka, now well into construction and set to open late next year.
Now that infrastructure works are largely complete on the subdivision, work on the residences can begin, Darby Partners developer John Darby says. Darby Partners, renowned for other local high-profile golf courses locally including Jack’s Point, The Hills and Millbrook, is also about to begin construction of the development’s restaurant straight after winter too. A golf clubhouse and visitor accommodation of 24 rooms which will range from one to three bedrooms, will also be developed on the lakefront.
There’s been “very strong interest” in all aspects of the project, with the new golf course covering 100ha, and more than 6000m in length. The new course has expansive lake and mountain views and will be ready for golfers to tee off late next year, after an 18-month construction period. The Glendhu course has been a 15-year project for Darby Partners with the first land use consent granted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council in 2008..
He was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2015. Jim was elected as mayor in 2016 and re-elected in 2019. He didn’t contest the 2022 election.
During his five-and-a-half years in the role of mayor he led a series of projects to bolster the district.
They included an initiative to provide affordable homes; a $2 bus transport scheme; a government working party for freedom camping; a bed tax proposal and other infrastructure and transport changes.
During the Covid-19 pandemic he led the implementation of funding and support for migrants without homes or work; establishment of the Queenstown Greater Needs fund for the medical needs of migrants; and the Economic Recovery and District Diversification taskforces.
Boult also worked with central government on initiating shovel-ready projects and establishing the Major Events fund and chaired the Otago Lifelines Programme for natural disaster readiness and the Metro Mayors section of local government.
Jim is a patron of the Child Cancer Foundation, Whakatipu Wildlife Trust and Whakatipu Rowing Club, and the chair of the Canterbury Museum Working Party.

Jack’s Point Village development responds to growth New hotel and supermarket planned
By Sue Fea
Darby Partners has just started construction of a new boutique hotel development at Jack’s Point Village and director John Darby says they hope to start building a new supermarket early next year.
It’s also time to proceed with a supermarket to service what will eventually be a population of some 11,000 residents along the Southern Corridor.
A boutique hotel with a residential feel
“We’ve started back into our hotel development with new energy and enthusiasm now that we can see that demand has returned,” Darby says.
“We’re looking at a product that’s reflective of growing trends and has more of a residential feel than the traditional hotel room with corridors.”
The hotel will feature a collection of smaller, village-style boutique lodgings, covering all markets from affordable through to longer higher-end stays.
“We’re getting away from that traditional, multistoried hotel,” Darby says.
“We now need to deliver a more thoughtful experience than we did in the past. People want fresh air, and they want to circulate outside around a street.”
Population growth warrants a commercial centre
There’s been such big growth in residential development in the area that the population warrants proceeding with the Jack’s Point’s commercial centre. “We’re actively into that and see that as the commercial hub for the wider residential area with the district council now planning more residential to the south of Jardine’s farmland.”
“Our footprint is similar to the size of Queenstown’s CBD, so we’ve quite a bit of capacity. We’ve only developed 20 percent, less than a quarter of that.”
The projected population of 11,000 includes Hanley’s Farm, Jack’s Point, the Special Housing Area that’s under construction and a block that Darby Partners sold to Classic Homes to build several hundred houses.
Big demand for Jack’s Point properties
The developers of a $400million, 5ha luxury residential and commercial property development at Jack’s Point Village have sold almost $115million worth of high-end apartments in the past six to 12 months. Falconer CEO Dean Franklin says the latest $2.5m residence was snapped up last week.
The company is developing 600sqm of commercial property in Clubhouse Lane, including a luxurious day spa facility. “We have an amazing, well known day spa operator about to start fitout.” The fit out alone is believed to be around $1m. The high-end spa will offer high touch wellness treatments, with interiors inspired by the surrounding landscape.
There will be a real estate showroom, with some space available for a restaurant or entertainment offering.
A wine bar will be opening in Village Works Quarters – a 750sqm space nearby with 16 luxury apartments, and Falconer is also in negotiations with a renowned, high-end operator to open an upmarket restaurant.
“Our owner occupier Village Works Lofts in the business park development went really quickly. We’ve sold 20 tenancies out of the 23 in the last 12 months.” Franklin says. Businesses signed up so far, include a
“We’re focused very much on smaller scale shops to cater to those people, and expansion’s happening rapidly so we’re now advancing plans for our first supermarket to support and service the area,”
Darby says. There’s enough demand for another service centre in the area that’s within walking and biking distance and the timing is right.
While his company is handling the hotel and supermarket developments, they’ve sold other land to developers to undertake complementary developments in the village area.
Some of these are mixed use with housing above and commercial below. There is an increase in people wanting mixed-use apartments so they can live upstairs and do business, or attract some tenancy income, downstairs.
“It’s an interesting growth area,” Darby says. “It’s in high demand.”
People want smaller properties and this option suits them, he says. The population in the area is now adequate to attract strong service providers who are moving to Queenstown to set up their businesses.
hair stylist, barber, massage and beauty therapist, art gallery-café, sauna showroom, law firm, construction firm and IT company.
Village Central – a 2ha block comprising another 50 homes, 60 apartments, and a limited amount of commercial property with longterm staff accommodation for Village staff above, is currently on the drawing board, Franklin says. These will be directly opposite a gym, pool, and health centre. Eight will be retained for long-term accommodation.
“We still have labour and resource problems for long-term workers for the village and we need appropriate accommodation for them,” Franklin says. “These will be sold but we are desperate for worker housing too so we will be holding onto some.”
More than half of the 56 Lake Tewa Apartments, that have started construction, have been sold and will be coming online over the next 12 to 18 months, he says.
Construction is underway on underground carparking. A 32-space underground car park has already been built and 130 more parks are under construction at Lake Tewa Apartments with plans for another 300 under Village Central.

CRIMELINE
The downtown winter party season hasn’t begun, but Police are already dealing with the usual late-night assaults and altercations
Just before 2am on Sunday 26 May a 28-year-old Australian woman allegedly began an argument with a group of people unknown to her on Camp Street, hitting a male in the face. Community and Youth Constable Amanda Shute says the woman was restrained by her male associate, then three people from the group approached the pair and began trading punches before the fight dispersed. Two Australian tourists were issued with formal warnings for disorderly behaviour and fighting.
Also on Sunday at 12.30am a 20-year-old local male was on Church Street when a verbal altercation began with another male, Shute says. “He then allegedly assaulted two males, punching them in the head.” One of the victims required medical treatment. The 20-year-old faced charges of assault with intent to injure and injuring with intent in the Queenstown District Court on Monday 27 May.
A 21-year-old Queenstown male also appeared in court on Monday facing two charges of common assault and one of injuring with intent to injure, after allegedly punching two people in the head and pushing a third into a window just before 2am on Saturday 25 May. The young man was on Ballarat Street when he allegedly had a verbal disagreement with a group of males, Shute says.
Drink driving
A member of the public alerted Police after a vehicle was driven into a crash barrier on Frankton Road on Friday afternoon, 24 May. The vehicle continued allegedly weaving in its lane before being stopped by Police, Shute says. The 24-year-old local male driver was breath tested and blew 400mcgs/l breath and issued with an Infringement Offence Notice and also charged with operating a vehicle carelessly. He is due to appear in the Queenstown District Court on 24 June. A 30-year-old Auckland visitor was stopped in Frankton and breath tested at 8.40pm on 24 May. The driver elected to have a blood specimen taken and Police are awaiting these results.
Victim Support seeks volunteers
Victim Support Queenstown is looking for volunteers, with its numbers having dropped to 12 to cover all of Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago, team leader Central Otago/Wakatipu Ashleigh Lindley says. This decrease is a national trend as cost-of-living pressures mean some volunteers have to opt out, she says. Volunteers currently offer a minimum of six hours per week up to several days a week and any contribution is greatly appreciated, she says.
“There’s no age limit – 18 and over, and no prerequisites. People just go through a Police check.”
While an independent charity, Victim Support works closely with the Police offering support and an ear to listen, whether it’s supporting friends and family coping with loss, victims of crime, or survivors in the wake of traumatic events like road crashes.
“It’s about making people feel safe and helping them to cope in the aftermath of a crime or traumatic event,” Lindley says.

Last week’s Crimeline Community Patrol article
We received plenty of feedback on last weeks Crimeline which made reference to the way some young females were dressed while out and about. This was intended to focus on concerns about age, vulnerability and safety, particularly in near sub-zero temperatures.
The Lakes Weekly wants to assure readers that it was never our intention to victim blame or imply the way women were dressed was a factor in any assaults downtown. We agree with those who took time to point out women should be able to dress however they want and not feel judged, ridiculed or endangered. A lesson learned here and thank you to the readers who took time to reach out, making the point and encouraging us to do better. Understood and we will.

DAVID JOHN
by Sue Fea
My Life Story
A talented, fun-loving Liverpudlian
David John is best known in the south for his incredible artistic talents, but his quick wit and words have also been recognised on the national and international stage as a playwright, poet, and scriptwriter.
Accolades, however, are not what life’s about for this fun-loving Liverpudlian, born shortly after WWII ended in 1945. The bombsite remains of the port city were his playground growing up when food was rationed. “I didn’t see a banana until I was three,” he says.
David’s early school was ‘old Dickens-style’. “I belonged to a gang at high school. It was a slum area. You had to be a hard knock to live there.”
David’s fascination with art began when his dad left him at the Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery where he discovered Cezanne’s famous painting ‘The Murder’. “I fell in love with painting. I just wanted to draw.”
At 14 he set up in the park selling pencil portraits. “I charged sixpence each and made heaps.”
By 17 he was studying at Liverpool Art School, during an incredible time in Liverpool’s music scene. He’d watch hometown boys The Beatles playing at The Cavern, long before they were famous, Eric Clapton performing with The Yardbirds, and went to Bob Dylan’s first British Concert Tour. “I heard ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ before the record was available,” David says. John Lennon graced the Art School where his first wife Cynthia stayed on as a student while John left for Hamburg with The Beatles. “I did life drawing with her.”
These exciting times made David restless, so he hitch hiked solo around Europe in his late teens, something not done in the 1960s. South Africa’s sunshine beckoned at 21 where he met first wife, Dee. David sold paintings there before heading to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands where he got permission from the Lord Mayor to set up downtown with the artists. Eventually they headed to Montreal where he made good money painting portraits. New York followed then back to England when Dee fell pregnant with eldest son Sam. “There was no way I was bringing up kids in England.” They got free passage on a P&O ship to Australia in exchange for teaching art. Dee was the model.
David won a major art award in Adelaide, but the flies and heat drove them to New Zealand where tourists recommended Queenstown. “I couldn’t believe it. Everything was so pure and clear, the trout in the lake. You could see the bottom in 5-feet of water.”
They settled in Arrowtown – population 375, where realtor John Newman found them an A-frame and the disused Stables site as an art gallery. “Peggy Newman arrived with a whole bunch of groceries, and I fell in love with the place. I was hooked,” David says.
so much beauty, landscapes became his thing,
Renowned for his humour, he once convinced Aussie tourists that while there were no snakes, there were “feral poodles” at Macetown. They’d been abandoned at Millbrook and were killing sheep and attacking tourists. They’d just learned, while safe downtown, they could be at risk as camping ground prey, when a local lady behind them lost it laughing.
Eventually David and Dee parted, second son Joe staying with Dad in Arrowtown.
An early co-founder of the Arrowtown Autumn Festival, David began writing comic shows for the festival, drawing packed crowds – The Wedding, a spoof on Southland weddings, Robin Hood, and A Fashionable Murder, in which he played ‘Inspector Smallcrust’, among them.
“I’d find out who could tell a good joke in the pub, get them to portray their favourite star, then write them into the show.”
“One night during ‘Hang onto your Plums’ we almost had to break up a fight. Grown men in bonnets and nappies fighting over who got the blue teddy bear.”
A performer in Showbiz Queenstown musicals too, David’s has always written stories and poetry, while also working as a photographer for Jim Boult’s Mountain Scene.
But it was the combination of David’s words and entertainer Kevin Lynch’s music that turned his ‘Ballad of Millie Hall’ about Arrowtown’s goldrush flood into a full-scale musical, ‘Rush! The Stage Musical’. An investor, and Fortune Theatre director, got on board, opening to a crowd of 2000 at Dunedin’s Regent Theatre in 1998.
“We had 12 songs and in three or four months I had to deliver almost twice that.”
“I had both my boys on either side in the front row with standing ovations. You can’t buy that.”
‘Rush’ was picked up around NZ, in England and the US.
Hardly surprising that daughter Fineen, 20, is now pursuing a writing career making David and partner Lyndal proud.
With
exhibiting in Queenstown and Invercargill’s Anderson Park Gallery where he won a premier painting award in the early 1980s.

Downtown high-end luxury – ROKI Queenstown well underway
By Sue Fea
With nightly rates ranging from $2000 to $25,000 for a private suite, inroom chef, butler and chauffeur, the super high-end ROKI Queenstown Hotel may exceed most budgets, but bookings for next year are already rolling in.
General manager Stephen McAteer says they’re slightly ahead of schedule, aiming to open the $70m project in April next year, with strong interest coming from the international market. He’s hoping to convert those first guests into regular returns. “We want to show off Queenstown to our visitors,” McAteer says.
ROKI (Te Reo for tranquil and calm) is pitched as a peaceful sanctuary in the heart of NZ’s buzzing adventure capital.
ROKI’s high-end, fine dining restaurant will impress on the third floor of the five-level lakefront complex on Lake Esplanade with acclaimed former Huka Lodge executive chef Paul Froggatt at the helm. Froggatt has Michelin star experience and will bring his unique high-level influence to the cuisine. Froggatt oversaw the restaurants at the Robertson Lodges and McAteer says they’re “very honoured” to have him on board.
The restaurant will have just under 40 seats, and a terrace bar overlooking the lake, which will be open to the public with locals encouraged to experience the hotel’s offering. “Food and Beverage is a very important part of the experience and there will be a lot of traditional tableside service and culinary theatre – carving, serving, sautéing at the table,” McAteer says. They’ll be procuring the best of NZ’s produce and ingredients, with local venison, lamb, crayfish, and crab all showcased in the plush restaurant, with the terrace bar focusing more on lighter lunch and snack-type options. McAteer assures the restaurant and bar area will be “quite a spectacular venue.”
An entire floor’s dedicated to ROKI’s luxurious spa facility PURE, which features a 20m swimming pool, hot tub, saunas, steam room, hydrotherapy and two treatment rooms.
Guests booking the 550sqm top of the line four-bedroom suite also get driven around the area in the ‘house car’. Entry level rooms start at about $2000 a night with 10 one-bedroom suites, three two-bedroom family suites then the top level three and four-bedroom suites. Construction should be completed by the end of the year, followed by the fit-out. Top Kiwi interior designer Virginia Fisher, who designed the interiors for Eichardt’s, Matakauri Lodge and Huka Lodge, is charged with creating a ‘calming and relaxing’ atmosphere throughout.
McAteer expects to open in April next year with about 45 staff and hopes to be fully operational by the summer.
Sustainability is a huge focus and with ROKI’s logo featuring a native kea, the owners have partnered with the Kea Conservation Trust, working with the locally based Southern Lakes Sanctuary.
A full-time sustainability officer will be on staff and McAteer is keen to ensure staff get hands on, heading into the bush to help with the predator control work. Guests will also be invited to donate to this work.

Swap to save: Low Waste Living workshops are back!
by Neha Gosalia
Deodorant you can make in 2 minutes that lasts you 6 months, crackers that cost next to nothing but feel fancy as, and bikkies to please your bubs as well as your bank account- we’ve got all these life hacks and more at this year’s Low Waste Living Workshops!
At last year’s sold out workshops, we shared an immense amount of content and information, leading to fantastic kōrero; people shared ideas and insightful questions. This year we’re offering two unique workshops, while offering more demonstrations and opportunities for you to get involved as well.
The Family Edition (13th June) will be held right in the heart of a residential community, at Shotover Primary School, to make it easy for local families to pop over after dinner. We’ll be sharing tips and swaps on everything from bulk buying and lunchbox swaps to nappies and wipes as well as yummy but cheap recipes for family favourite snacks. We believe every small step you take can lead to big change. With each swap we become a more sustainable community, and demonstrate conscious consumer choices to our tamariki and rangatahi.
The Kitchen Edition (20th June) is also our Green Drinks offering for the month. Green Drinks events have consistently offered unique opportunities for our community to learn about and engage with sustainability in every aspect of their lives. Whether it’s an evening of swirling and sipping while passionate wine-growers tell us about their low-waste practices, or an inspiring discussion around active transport, these events leave everyone who attends feeling motivated to take their sustainability journey to the next step.
Resourceful Communities aims to educate and inspire along the same lines, leading to great collaborations with Green Drinks. In March 2023, our Slow Fashion Month clothes swap collaboration was a huge success and set off a series of independent swaps in the community. In 2024, we collaborated again on a Plastic Free July Party workshop, getting crafty and creating disco-balls out of old CDs.
HackOff 2024
by: Gary Hough
HackOff 2024 brings together awesome chefs from Queenstown to battle their Wānaka counterparts with the sole aim to save you food and money. KiwiHarvest, the local food rescue charity, in association with QLDC’s Waste Minimisation Fund have created the campaign to enable people to maximise the food they already have and may end up throwing out.
Two teams of three chefs from each side of the hill are presented with normal household food that can get wasted, like excess greens, leftover fruit from kids’ lunchboxes and excess bread and they then must demonstrate a hack to extend the life of the item and cook up a delicious meal incorporating it.
The 6 great chefs – three from Queenstown and three from Wanaka are the central figures of battle and there are great Q&A and tips from each one of them on the website.
This time, we’re bringing you homemade chemical free cleaners, tea making, you can even build your own reusable kits. We meet you where you are and help to inspire you to make manageable changes to reduce the amount of waste in your household. To allow time to truly engage with the content, numbers are capped at 30 for each workshop, so book your spaces quick! Tickets are available on Humanitix and via our Facebook page.
Resourceful Communities is created by Wastebusters, and delivered in the Whakatipu by Sustainable Queenstown. These events are proudly supported by Queenstown Lakes District Council Zero Waste District Programme.
You can watch all six short fun videos of the chefs battling it out and download a free eBook containing all the hacks and recipes including bonus unseen ones on KiwiHarvest’s website: www.kiwiharvest.org.nz/hackoff
Everyone who downloads the free PDF is also in the draw to win a Mooch Food preservation hamper.
Representing Queenstown in this battle royal is Ainsley Rose Thompson or Chef Ainsley ‘Gravy Train’, Alvaro Morales from Crowne Plaza and Matteo Lauricella from The Millhouse so make sure to vote for Team Queenstown as the winners on the KiwiHarvest website so they can be crowned Hack Off Champions 2024!
The campaign runs from May 27 through to June 14.

New Country Lane Market
by Jess Allen
Make it, sew it, bake it, grow it. That’s the motto for the newly-formed Makers Market at Country Lane. They are providing a creative hub for all things handmade and showcase some of the great artisans in our region. On every second Sunday in winter, you’re sure to find some treasures.
The first market was held on Sunday 28 April and the crew are settling into their new digs. It came about due to a change in bylaw requirements, meaning that stallholders trading along the lakefront were heavily restricted in how they were able to operate on a regular day-to-day basis. This change does not include the Queenstown Markets, which still continue to run each Saturday.
Charlie Archer, Monica Banhidi, Jan Nicholson and Lorraine Ni Dhubhghall formed a volunteer committee – Monica first approached Country Lane to get the ball rolling for a Sunday market.
Tineke Enright and her brother Bruce Grant are the fourth generation guardians of the family’s Frankton property. They were really happy to have the market held there on Sundays. When Tineke got the phone call from Monica, they jumped on board and got the ball rolling.
“We’re wanting to support more small, local, boutique-type businesses – as opposed to chain stores. For us, the Makers Market was the perfect fit with everything we’ve got going on here,” Enright says.
Archer says they were stoked to be working with Country Lane as they align with what the markets are trying to achieve. She runs a stall selling her handmade copper and silver jewellery. The first couple of events have gained a lot of interest from locals as well as those wanting to get involved – one of the rules for stallholders is their items must be handmade.
“We’ve got a lot of people interested, our first one went really well and a lot of people wanted to come just to be there for that first one,” Archer says.
“A lot of people go on holidays at this time of year, so we’re expecting June and July to get more stallholders. We’ve got a lot of regulars that go to the Remarkables Market and because that’s closed now, they’ve started coming to us. We did it on a Sunday because we didn’t want to compete with the other markets.”
There are currently about 50 stallholders on their books, with about 20 showing up each Sunday. The stalls range from food stalls and cakes, clothing, jewellery, plants, ceramics, hair braiding and artwork. They have musicians coming down to play as well.
“We just wanted to create a sense of community. There’s such a great arts culture here that we wanted to embrace that some more. There’s a lot of younger people that can’t get into the other markets when they’re full or don’t know how they can get into them, that have artwork at home that they do, even for mental health reasons – finding somewhere they can sell those things is quite nice.”
A Queenstown Winter Tale with a difference
by Tracy Porteous
For those wanting to get involved, the process is pretty simple – you can email queenstownmakersmarket@gmail.com expressing your interest. The committee will get back to you with an application packet that asks more questions about your goods and how they’re made.
“It was amazing seeing how happy everyone was at the end of the first one! We're hoping to make this the next big thing to do on a Sunday in Queenstown,” Archer says.
You’ll find the Makers Market at Country Lane 10am – 3pm every second Sunday, so keep your eyes peeled on their Facebook and Instagram @makersmarketcountrylane to find out when the next one will be.
Entries are now open for the new Queenstown Arts Society Members Exhibition, Winter Tale. This year’s exhibition will be showing from 28 June at Te Atamira and is planned as a warming and delightful visual feast to help brighten the season with local and regional artists sharing their stories through painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and more.
Opening night is on Thursday, 27 June and is a chance to soak in the art along with the artists. Additionally, singer/songwriter Charlotta Haacke will be presenting ‘Whole Lotta Love’ with her captivating voice.
Over the course of the exhibition Queenstown Arts Society will be offering workshops and events to connect the local arts community creatively in Te Atamira’s warm spaces.
A “Winter Tale” is going to be a show that goes down like a good hot toddy! Consider a break from skiing and snowboard to let your mind be inspired and your soul space activated in a different way. This is a real winter treat, so don’t miss out.
If you are not a member it is easy to join and enter work into the exhibition – just visit the QAS website at www.queenstownartsociety.co.nz for details. Opening night is Thursday, 27 June at 5.30pm. Exhibition begins Friday 28 June until Friday 2 August at Te Atamira, Remarkables Park Town Centre, Frankton.

Catalyst Kōrero- What is regenerative tourism – and how can we move towards it?
‘Regenerative tourism’ is the aspiration at the core of 29 destination management plans across New Zealand, aiming to reinvent how New Zealand approaches and practises tourism post-Covid. University of Otago tourism professor Susan Houge Mackenzie will discuss what exactly is regenerative tourism? How can and will this ideal be put into practice? Houge Mackenzie’s research shows communities and their regional tourism organisations – including Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism – are “remarkably aligned” about how tourism should support thriving communities beyond simple economics. Despite this the government has pulled funding and devolved responsibility to the regional tourism markets reverting to the focus on increasing and/or spreading visitors across the regions.
