LOCALLY OWNEDSINCE FOREVER BULLETIN

Change is coming

The year is 2044. You arrive at your Lakeview Queenstown hotel in an autonomous taxicab. It doesn’t fly. It doesn’t need to. Like all vehicles, its route is managed by an AI network, which has made traffic a thing of the past. The cab door opens automatically, as robot dog butlers carry your luggage off to the room. There’s still a friendly face to greet you at the reception, but who knows these days whether she’s actually a ‘real’ person. Uncanny valley.

Standing in your room, you look out of the windows down onto Queenstown bay, where electric jet boats and ferries buzz about. Over the long weekend break, you’ll experience the wind-rush thrill of bungy jumping, ski through The Remarks tunnel down into The Doolans, enjoy lamb at dinner with your friends. When it’s time to leave, you’ll simply take off your headset and your immersion suit, or turn off your neural chip. You’re still in your apartment in Beijing. Virtual / augmented reality is so good these days, you don’t actually have to fly to your destination to go on holiday there.

I attended a talk with futurists Ben Reid and Sam Ragnarrson, hosted by Queenstown’s Liger Academy, last week. Reid has just published his book ‘Fast Forward Aotearoa: How emerging technology is defining the future of New Zealand… and what we can do about it’. He was also the keynote speaker at Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) summit, talking about the opportunities and impacts for tourism operators. And he writes a technology blog (www. memia.com), keeping his readers up to speed with the breakneck pace of technological advances.

As a small example, for tourism, he showed us a video of him speaking in English, French, Mandarin and German. It had been produced by AI in a couple of minutes. You could tell it was artificial, something about the way his mouth moved, but within a year I bet you won’t be able to tell the difference.

Reaching out to overseas markets, tourism businesses won’t have a language barrier anymore.

It was a fascinating, hopeful and scary discussion. Like the printing press, steam engine, electricity, computers, the internet, and iPhone (launched just 16 years ago), AI is one of those paradigm shifting advances which make the future somewhat unknowable. We are at the edge a technological precipice and, with AI’s exponential learning rate, the pace of change will spin our heads around.

Queenstown Resort College now runs a course in AI, or ‘machine learning’, and businessman Roger Sharp has recently launched Technology Queenstown to grow the sector. It’s clear, though, with AI development centered on the US west coast, neither Queenstown nor New Zealand are economically or socially prepared for what’s coming. But I’m not sure anywhere or anyone else is either.

Ladies Mile development clears another hurdle

Plans to rezone Queenstown land for 2,400 new homes should be approved by the Minister for the Environment, an independent hearings panel says.

Queenstown Lakes District Council wants to change the zoning on Te Pūtahi Ladies Mile to enable urban development. But that’s drawn criticism from many locals, concerned about gridlocked traffic and the impact on the local environment.

The panel held hearings in November and December, after 125 submitters raised over 1,003 submission points.

In its draft report, released Thursday, it makes several changes to council plans.

It wants a minimum density of 40 homes per hectare over the zone, higher density than elsewhere in the district. There will be no standalone housing in the Ladies Mile zone, only apartment blocks, townhouses, duplexes and the like.

The panel also wants rules about the maximum amount of parking removed. And, crucially, it wants infrastructure staged to ensure the various planned developments are integrated with transport infrastructure.

That includes signals at the intersection of Howards Drive and State Highway 6 and pedestrian and cycle crossings over both roads.

Council planning & development general manager David Wallace welcomed the panel’s draft recommendation report.

“[It] acknowledges housing remains one of the biggest challenges faced in the Queenstown Lakes, and more land is required to accommodate increased density and more affordable housing typologies,” he says.

“This decision identifies that affordability is causing significant housing pressure for short-term migrant and permanent workers alike, residents and families, and based on the evidence received, Te Pūtahi Ladies Mile Variation is the correct planning response to help address this issue.”

The new Te Pūtahi Ladies Mile Zone would also provide a range of open spaces and community facilities, support commercial activities through a new town centre, and focus on providing active and public transport infrastructure to support a significant shift in how people get around the Whakatipu Basin, Wallace says.

Council and submitters will now be able to identify and correct minor or technical errors or omissions in the draft recommendation before a final recommendation is issued to Minister, Penny Simmonds.

Previously, the government approved an application by QLDC to streamline the planning process at Te Pūtahi Ladies Mile, meaning the proposed variation can now be progressed swiftly.

Silver for Robinson at GS World Cup finals

Queenstown alpine ski star Alice Robinson has secured a thrilling second place at the Giant Slalom World Cup finals in Austria.

On Sunday night (NZ time), the 22-year-old took her fifth podium of the season and the tenth World Cup podium of her career.

“I am really happy to end the season with another podium, I think this year I may not have got a win but I feel like the consistency in my skiing has been the best it’s ever been so I am really happy with that.”

Only the top giant slalom athletes qualified for the finals in Saalbach. Robinson was quick off the mark, with the green light through the first section of the course. She continued to keep her foot on the gas and maintained her speed throughout her entire first run. After run one Robinson was sitting in third, +0.85 seconds behind leader Federica Brignone of Italy.

Going into run two, Robinson was fast out the start gate, making quick work of the top three sections. As she came over the breakaway into the final pitch of the race, it was clear just how hard she was working to maintain her form down the increasingly rough course.

“Today was definitely tough, I find these conditions quite challenging with the softer, peeling snow, but this year I have made a lot of progress getting better on different conditions. It was hot and I was feeling pretty tired but I wanted to give the last GS run of the year a good crack!”

Robinson had done enough to claim the top spot and with just two athletes left to go she knew she had secured a medal. Thea Louise Stjernesund (NOR) was no match for Robinson’s pace but run one leader Brignone (ITA) put down an exceptional run to take the win by -1.36 seconds. Stjernesund rounded out the podium in third.

Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami finished off an exceptional season by securing the 2024 Giant Slalom Crystal Globe for the first time in her decorated career.

Saalbach is the venue for the 2025 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships, so a podium finish for Robinson bodes well for next season. Robinson will be in action for the final time this Northern Hemisphere season at the Saalbach speed races next weekend.

Meanwhile, Queenstown’s Ruby Star Andrews, 19, and Wānaka’s Luca Harrington both secured top 10 finishes at the Freeski World Cup held in Tignes, France over the weekend. Read more on lwb.co.nz.

CRIMELINE

Car rolls down bank

Queenstown Police are urging drivers to take care after attending a large number of vehicle crashes during the past week or so. A 63-year-old woman had a miraculous escape when the car she was driving rolled two to three times down a bank in Huff Street in Queenstown, coming to rest on its roof on a homeowner’s wooden deck. Community and Youth Constable Amanda Shute says the woman was extremely lucky to escape with only a small bruise on her elbow in the accident, which occurred at 2pm on 7 March. She had taken a wrong turn and completed a U-turn at the end of the road, allegedly driving over the concrete curb causing the vehicle to roll down the bank, Shute says. The owners of the house weren’t home but were notified. “Luckily, there’s no damage to the house, but there likely is to the deck.” Wheelie bins were damaged. “It’s very lucky that the car has fallen between the bank and the house.” Charges are being considered.

Asleep at the wheel

In another fortunate escape, a local driver fell asleep at the wheel at 6.30am on 10 March while heading south on Kingston Road, on the Queenstown side of the new roundabout beneath the Remarkables. The vehicle then appears to have crossed the centre line, leaving the road, careering over a culvert along the grass verge and coming to rest against a pile of silage, Shute says. Charges are also being considered here.

Water rescue

Two boaties had a lucky escape too around 5pm on 8 March when their vessel lost power and began crashing against rocks near Bennett’s Bluff, below the Glenorchy Road. Police were alerted of the situation in changing weather conditions, but Shute says information was slow due to the poor cellphone reception in the area. Coastguard Queenstown was called, as was the Glenorchy Volunteer Fire Brigade, and a call went out to all other vessels of opportunity in the area at the time. The Glenorchy Fire volunteers located the distressed boaties in their vessel. “We really want to thank Glenorchy Fire Brigade volunteers for their rapid assistance in locating the vessel,” Shute says. “We’re also very grateful to The Spirit of Queenstown and Queenstown Water Taxi operators, who both responded to the vessel to communicate with the occupants and ascertain whether there were any injuries,” she says. “We were relying on phone reception which was dropping in and out.” Police really want to remind people to be prepared when out boating, she says. “Having two waterproof means of communication is essential, and a simple UHF radio in this instance would have assisted greatly in the emergency response.”

Assault charge

A 29-year-old local man was charged with assault after Police were called to an Arrowtown bar when he allegedly punched the security guard in the head, Shute says. “The security guard had removed him from the bar for urinating in the outdoor area.” After he’d been removed, he then returned and allegedly punched the guard. The man is due appear in the Queenstown District Court on 19 March.

Shout out to patrollers

Police would also like to give a shout out to their wonderful Community Patrol team volunteers who patrol downtown streets and out into the basin’s residential suburb hot spots like parks and places where youth gather. More volunteers are needed for these Friday and Saturday evening shifts, to maintain a strong presence on our streets, Shute says. People should always report any suspicious behaviour or trouble to Police in the first instance, through 105 or 111, but the volunteer patrollers are happy to talk to the public about their role. “These patrollers are our eyes and ears and report any suspicious or untoward behaviour they see to the Police units on duty.”

Frankton Food Riders to the Rescue…

Frankton Food Rescue Riders may sound like the latest action movie heroes, and well, they are, but theirs is a much more vital role.

Kiwi Harvest’s Gary Hough is on the look-out for at least six regular volunteer riders to take on the Frankton café and restaurant run on their new cargostyle e-bike. He’s hoping to get buy-in from Frankton businesses keen to release different staff fortnightly as part of a three-day-a-week morning roster, each only needed for 90 minutes to two hours.

A similar offer from Crowne Plaza manager Stewart Manson, who’s been releasing 27 of his 78 staff on full pay to do the voluntary e-bike food surplus collections and deliveries in the CBD, has worked wonderfully and Hough is hoping others will follow suit.

Manson says food waste and rescue has been a talking point in the hotel and they wanted to take the lead in developing their relationship with Kiwi Harvest further. “We’ve gone above and beyond volunteering our fully-trained team and they ride around seven cafés between them three days a week, dropping the surplus food – muffins, croissants, cakes, pies and sandwiches, to the Salvation Army.”

Staff are released from work for the deliveries on full pay and he says it’s been a huge morale booster and a great way of fostering further the culture they want to create in their team.

“It’s been so positive. It’s brought us together. It shows that our hotel cares for the community and about minimising waste.”

He says it’s been so rewarding for all of those involved as the charities are always so thankful to receive the food. ‘I’d recommend any corporate company or business to get involved.”

Hough says individual volunteers are welcomed too and are all given full training ready to collect the surplus food, mostly focusing on Five Mile cafés, and delivering to allocated charities in the area. These include the Rewi’s kai parcel food support programme, Whakatipu Youth Trust hub and Abbeyfield.

“It’s a fun way to get outdoors and be involved in a worthwhile community cause,” Hough says.

Aspiring Conversations – nurturing and celebrating our local youth

We firmly believe in the benefits of our young people engaging in the arts. As part of our annual and diverse festival programmes, we specifically create opportunities to spark joy and creativity in curious minds. Through

school visits, performances and workshops with guest speakers and artists, there are many ways for students to engage in The Aspiring Conversations programmes.

In this year’s programme, singer-songwriters Julia Deans and Adam McGrath will lead workshops at Mount Aspiring College. Sophie Handford, founder of School Strike 4 Climate and Kāpiti councillor, will speak with students. The Ngā Tahu Archive team will also present on historical connections between Te Waipounamu South Island and Waitangi, pre- and post-1840. And we will also be showcasing a writing project in collaboration with MAC’s English department.

Mat Doyle, Head of Learning Arts at Mount Aspiring College, explains: “Opportunities with artists expose our students to the intricacies of arts industries and inspire them to explore new ways of expressing their ideas and stories, such as through music. Aspiring Conversations plays an indispensable role in the creative trajectories of our students in offering our students opportunities they would otherwise miss out on in our little bubble.”

Don’t miss Aspiring Conversations on from 4-7 April.

Wherefore art thou, Romeo

The classic love story of Romeo and Juliet will play out in Wānaka this Friday but with a wee bit of a twist. Expect to see one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays with hilarious and heartfelt antics.

Taking to the stage for the play will be seven actors – it has been set as a modern-bohemian romance that features some Kiwi and Aussie classic music. Singing and dancing is encouraged and the show’s co-director and company artistic director, Laura Irish, says that as cliché as it sounds, all the feedback on their Australia and New Zealand tour so far has been that it’s unlike any version of Romeo and Juliet that people have ever seen. Ollie Howlett is the other co-director and musical director.

“We really lean into the amount of joy that Shakespeare has written into the first half of the play and we essentially perform the show in two halves,” Irish says. “The first half of the play could be viewed as purely a comedy – there’s so much music in the show as well. The music that Ollie has created for the show is stunningly beautiful and he’s used all Kiwi and Australian music. We do songs by Dave Dobbyn and The Dregs, and it’s just peppered throughout the whole show.

“We also incorporate elements of crowd work, interaction and improv. While we stick to Shakespeare’s script, it is edited down so that we can include music but it’s also edited down in a way that gives us actors a bit of freedom to play and surprise the audience. So every show is a little bit different.”

The crew is based all over NZ including Nelson, Auckland, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington and they perform around 50-60 shows across NZ. They’ll be heading to Wānaka off the back of a high as they recently finished their first ever tour in Australia. They were fortunate to pick up the Best Theatre award for the first week of the Adelaide Fringe Festival, going up against 1300 shows, and will be nominated for several bigger awards now as a result of that, the team were “incredibly stoked because we’ve never been to the festival before.”

They’ve been doing Romeo and Juliet since November and it’s the fifth show they’ve pulled together over the past five years. In the past the troupe have also won awards at Dunedin’s Fringe Festival including for their rendition of

Electrifying contemporary dancing

IYKYK (If You Know You Know) is a double-bill of contemporary dance, with works by choreographers Holly Newsom and Forest Kapo, coming to Queenstown this weekend. The two works aim to bring a game-like lens of viewing the human condition asking how do you win at the game of life? What are the rules of the end of the world?

Foot Note New Zealand Dance are behind the upcoming show. They’re a contemporary dance company that have been based in Wellington for the last 38 years and aim to bring creative and artistic dance shows to Aotearoa New Zealand. The registered charitable trust have produced IYKYK, with their core Kaupapa to support and empower domestic choreographers, dancers and the other creatives they work with such as music.

Artistic Director Anita Hunziker is responsible for everything artistic when it comes to the show including curating the choreographers, composers and the lighting design. She’s excited to be bringing the show down here for their third time in Queenstown saying they’ve always had a fantastic response and that here is a community that they really like to connect with. They hope to continue to build that relationship.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Rockabilly Much Ado About Nothing. Their shows are set outside in gardens as the company was created in response to Covid-19 – allowing theatre to continue to be delivered during social distancing days. Now, they continue the tradition as something fun and unique.

Summing up the experience, the group sets the scene as a small troupe of travelling actors showing up to perform Shakespeare, comedy and live music for you while you drink wine with your closest mates. Irish also says that they hope to bring more shows down these ways in the future, including to Queenstown.

“The talent that the cast has musically is unparalleled. It’s really really special to hear everyone sing together. It’s different but we kind of have our own brand of how we like to do things, which is a little bit left of field.”

Barden Party’s Romeo and Juliet will play out at Paddons Paddock from 5.30pm on Friday, 22 March.

As it’s an outdoor event, be sure to rug up – you can also bring chairs and blankets if you’d like. More information and tickets can be found at Event Finda or by scanning the QR Code.

“At Foot Note we work super collaboratively, so along with the rest of my team we create all of our shows from scratch,” Hunziker says. “A part of the creative process is getting the works up onto the stage – we did this show originally last year and so we remounted it, basically got it back up and running. We got two new dancers into the show and so I helped them get into the show and get it happening.”

The show will be upbeat and high energy. There’ll be six dancers performing and Hunziker explains that one of the things that makes the show so exciting is the physicality of the dancers. Expect plenty of wow moments on stage. “There are two different pieces in the works for two different choreographers. The first piece was inspired by board games and the strategy behind board games, so onstage there’s a lot of deals and strategy, and there’s some fake fight scenes. That’s the high energy coming through. Then the second piece has layered a couple of different themes through it – we’re looking at the climate crisis, we’re also looking at relationships between people. The dancers had a really fun task, which was to create a social media or dating profile and so there’s a bit of text in there as well, where they’re meeting someone for the first time.”

Foot Note will also be hosting two master classes at Te Atamira on Friday, 22 March. This is something they like to do when on tour, to reach out to local dancers and get them involved. The first is at 7pm for teenagers and is free, then they have one running at 7.30pm for adults. Tickets for the adult class is $50 and includes a ticket to the show. Registration for each class is now up at Te Atamira’s website.

“What we like to do is give people a really good insight into the show because sometimes contemporary dance can be challenging for people who don’t watch it every day. So we like to educate people and they really get to learn movement from the show. They also get to talk about themes and we do some creative co-graphic tasks that are in the show so they can get a good handle on the themes in the show and so they know what they’re watching.”

IYKYK National Tour will take the stage at Queenstown Memorial Centre on Saturday, 23 March. More information and tickets can be found at Foot Note’s website footnote.org.nz/events/if-you-know-you-know-2024 or at Event Finda.

Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

I’m typing this in Queenstown Airport while the engineers reboot the whole plane system. So far Air NZ and Queenstown Airport have literally kept us on our toes - ZQN Security had us in a huge queue and they are back to insisting shoes, belts and laptops pose a major threat so must be checked thoroughly. If all the security staff were fired, there would be a lot of happy hospo businesses able to hire them, and imagine if they got rid of all the road “workers” (strange word for people who just stand on the road). After a relaxing hour sitting on the plane, Air NZ invited us to return to the terminal while they decide what to do with us. Ho hum….

Maybe Air NZ should use AI to sort out their many woes? I went to the Liger Academy class where the students were giving oldies like me a free lesson in using technology. WOW! They showed us all sorts of things AI can help us with and even I, a dim nearly pensioner was able to understand what they were saying. The classes are going to be on at 4.30pm for the next three Tuesdays and the teenage teachers are so courteous and encouraging. On the way home, my husband’s voice rang out on the speakerphone. As he’s prone to say ridiculous things, I warned him I had my friends Alf and Louise Bell in the car, and that Audrey was with us too. His response was “You’re having in orgy in the car?” - honestly, the man is deaf and/or a lunatic.

As usual, there’s so much going on in the Wakatipu and it’s very exciting to know that Chelsea Gawron is opening an apothecary in Arrowtown just before you turn right down to The Dishery. She’s finished all her training and for anyone who wants natural remedies, she’ll be the one to go to for perfect health and happiness.

And a big happy birthday to sculptor Morgan Jones, the district’s newest 90 year old - hugest congratulations, dear Morgan.

aspiringconversations.co.nz

I’ve just read (with extremely mixed feelings) that QLDC have approved 2400 housing units on the Ladies Mile - please please please let this be the start of some smart thinking about traffic. For the cost of that ridiculous road to Lakeview, we could have had dozens and dozens of electric buses saving all the traffic woes of our district. And surely it’s time to introduce a toll on cars on the most congested roads. I do try and get as many people into my car as possible when I’m going anywhere but still most of my driving is just old lady me scooting around town. If I knew I was going to have to pay, I’d make sure to cram in extra passengers to make it better value.

I hope none of the residents on the lake side of Lake Hayes got big frights this week. Apparently they had asked everyone to keep their loo seats closed as they were doing some work to clear a blockage in the sewerage while they were going to be blasting the pipes. Could have been exciting for people who needed a WC session at the wrong time!!

RICHARD SHORT

Born of gold….

My Life Story

Local heritage doesn’t come much richer than that of Queenstown builder Richard Short whose grandfather, shut out of a wealthy inheritance, turned to goldmining at Skippers and bought all of Battery Hill with the profits.

“The property stretched from Marina Creek up the hill above Frankton Road to above where Perkins Road is now and across to the creek beside Alpine Village,” Richard recalls.

Jack Short had married a local Skippers girl, Beatrice – the only daughter of a Skippers dredge master at Maori Point, who’d arrived from Port Chalmers. “It was the Great Depression and Beatrice’s father would’ve said all that would be worth anything then was gold.” They got enough to buy Battery Hill, subdividing sections off gradually.

The old house on Battery Hill had previously been used as a nurse’s home and a doctor’s surgery. Jack and Beatrice grew flowers and masses of vegetables there which they sold to local hotels. Beatrice’s dried flower arrangements were a hit with passing Asian tour buses. Richard and his two siblings picked raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, currants, and rosehips, all growing wild on the hillside and the Shorts sold the fruit and produce to the locals. Richard’s father Allen became an accomplished gardener, working in the maintenance team at Queenstown Gardens for some 30 years.

An old DC generator sat in the family shed, once used by goldminers working the stamp battery above Battery Hill. It was used for lighting the old house in the early days and eventually went to Lakes District Museum.

Growing up on the family’s Frankton Road property, halfway between Frankton and Queenstown, Richard says they were “pretty isolated”. “There were few homes along Frankton Road then.”

Queenstown and Districts High School was not for pansies. “My class was notorious for fighting and we were constantly being caned. A few toe rags would try dunk us younger kids under the water fountains.”

“Ian Daniel [the teacher] made us go swimming in the unheated, open-air Ballarat Street pool in August. There’d be a skin of ice on the pool. I was constantly shivering.”

Some boys shirked school to go deer and goat shooting.

At 16, Richard began a building apprenticeship with Albert de Reus, starting out on the Ambassador Motels with its challenging curved verandahs, enduring “freezing gorge winds” and rain in winter. “It was terrible.”

Dunedin beckoned and his ‘dream job’ – barman at a hotel. He loved it, until the night he and his friends were commenting on a TV comedy they were watching in the bar only to get a hammering by some rather angry, much larger patrons who thought they were talking about them. “I was so smashed up and the boss had to let me go.”

Richard then worked on the Cumberland Street overbridge before Queenstown mate Mark Thomas, now artist, sent him an anonymous letter inviting him to work in construction in Perth. “I took a punt and was sitting outside the boss’s office after I arrived to hear, ‘Shorty! You made it!’ Mark, and John Sarginson, were living there in a Salvation Army drop-in house.” Richard worked in various jobs there and eventually went through the lowest point in his life. “I was at the end of my tether, so I simply cried out to God for help and, man, it was instant. It transformed my life. I’d highly recommend praying in those situations,” he says.

It took a while, but he eventually moved home, a new man, and reconciled differences with his dad. “I’d been a rebel.” He then met wife of 40 years Isla at a local church and after they married, they restored the old Battery Hill house. A short stint in Aussie with their first two kids didn’t end well with Richard owed money by a building company after it failed. They returned to Auckland where he worked for the Otahuhu Transmission Plant before they came back to Queenstown.

Richard became very involved in his church and was a member of the local Deerstalkers Association for a time.

In the late 1990s they headed to Mexico on a mission trip before taking their two primary age kids through South America for three months. “People said it was crazy to do that, and some parts were, but we had a great time.”

In 2017 Richard, Isla and youngest daughter Neve travelled to Cambodia to help Mark and Julie Hillary set up a school for a poor community. “The school then was a tin shed. Everything was a mess. They had nothing. We repaired the tables and seating and took paper and pencils. We built them a set of swings, seesaw, and flying fox.” With inside temperatures of 50degC and 40degC outdoors it was hot work, but the delighted faces of the children made it all worthwhile.

Richard and Isla also delighted just prior to 2020 lockdown in having their kids home ready to build with five grandchildren under six and two on the way – 12 in the family home. “It was a busy lockdown.”

NUESTRA VOZ
