LOCALLY OWNEDSINCE FOREVER BULLETIN

The ‘snow’ must go on

It’s not every day that we get 6,000 people travelling to Queenstown to celebrate our mountains, and it’s certainly not every day that we get some of Australasia’s biggest music acts performing on them. In short, this is the magic of music and après-ski festival, Snow Machine, which we’re hosting for the second time in Queenstown this week.

This marriage of a ski holiday and destination music festival is why the event has such an international pull. Festival attendees are here, to share their love of music, snow and experience everything Queenstown has to offer! But, Queenstown’s inherent desirability shouldn’t be taken for granted, as a town it’s why we attract so many visitors, and it’s one of the reasons we contract such major headline acts. Benee, Coterie, Hilltop Hoods, Peking Duk, Shapeshifter are just a few – they’re here to perform, yes, but they’re also here to experience Queenstown.

Of course, the festival is just as much about the Queenstown community as it is about our international and domestic visitors. Throughout the week anyone can head up Coronet Peak or The Remarkables to watch artists perform enpiste, it’s free. We’ve also got discounted tickets to our three main stage events available exclusively for locals at our Church Street pop-up store.

In fact, the success of the festival is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the combined efforts of over 150 local businesses and especially NZSki. A festival of our size delivers an immediate economic benefit to the region, in what was traditionally considered an ‘off-peak’ week, we’re injecting over $15 million dollars back into the community.

However, I must acknowledge the challenges we have faced in obtaining a suitable main stage location. A central location is key in reducing the need for transport, and will help mitigate avoidable emissions and congestion along Frankton Road, allowing us to deliver a sustainable event for years to come.

Not to mention further bolstering our economy with attendees able to walk to centrally located businesses. But the show must go on and that means adapting to the circumstances. We’re hugely grateful for the support from Remarkables Park and we look forward to delivering an amazing event for all alongside them. But we won’t lose hope in working collaboratively with the council to achieve finding a sustainable solution for the future. Until then, we’ll stay focussed on what matters most, delivering a world-class experience. We encourage everyone to come and join us this week and experience the après energy for yourselves! Head up to the snow, dance to the music, have an après beverage and celebrate what living in Queenstown is all about. See you up there!

Free as a bird

Kiwi skier Fynn Powell put his knowledge of The Remarkables to good use on Sunday as he won The North Face Frontier 2-star.

The Taupō 21-year-old emerged victorious from a large 45-rider field at the Winter Games NZ-hosted freeride event, sealing the deal with a winning score of 97 points from a possible 100.

Starting in the central couloir at the top of the course, he stuck to the fall line and lined up feature after feature, first a double drop, then a huge backflip, finishing off with a huge triple drop at the bottom of the course, all with perfect landings.

“I am lucky enough to have ridden this face many times before, going through junior comps and I had a line picked out pretty early on, a couple weeks ago actually,” the Freeride World Tour skier says.

“My main concern was that chute at the top but it all felt pretty good.”

Pride event hit by graffiti

Winter Pride director Martin King says the targeting of a festival event by queer-phobic graffiti reinforces why Pride is so important.

Police are investigating after the words ‘child grooming’ were spray-painted on the pavement outside Rainbow Reading at Queenstown Lakes District Library on Thursday.

The event, which went ahead, promised “stories, songs, glitter, glamour and fun - a celebration of love, acceptance, diversity, and inclusion through children’s literature”.

It was hosted by drag king Hugo Grrrl, welcoming children of all ages with their parents and caregivers. Such events having been targeted by anti-trans protestors elsewhere, particularly in the US.

Queenstown’s mayor Glyn Lewers issued a press release on Friday saying it was “saddening to see a small voice in our community that has chosen to try to undermine and derail these events and question Council’s commitment to inclusion and representation”.

“However much these people feel they are well-intentioned, vandalism –particularly that which is organised, pre-meditated and carrying divisive sentiment – will not and cannot be tolerated,” Lewers says.

He also says direct threats to staff and event volunteers, defacing or ripping down posters, trolling on social media, and hiding or stealing books that don’t align with your personal views, will not be tolerated.

“These acts do not reflect the outlook shared by QLDC, myself or, I strongly believe, the vast majority of our community.”

Lewers says he was hesitant about including the specific wording of the graffiti, which he viewed as “bullying and bigotry masquerading as concern about the extreme sexualisation of children”.

But he believed it was important to be upfront “in order to provide a full explanation of why I, on behalf of thousands of others, oppose it”.

King says he’s keen not to fall into the trap of amplifying voices of hate.

“Our view from Winter Pride and Pride Pledge is being really cautious about the airtime we give to people who are queer-phobic, because it’s the platform that they want, that’s what they’re trying to get,” King says.

However, it is also important to share stories that show hate exists.

“Sadly, those voices are out there, and it just reinforces why Pride is so important,” King says.

“Pride is all about building awareness and visibility. Sometimes it draws out voices that don’t agree with that, and in doing so reminds people that we’ve still got to work hard to make people feel safe.

“It’s just really sad and disappointing it happened, against the backdrop of an incredible, embracing, inclusive town for what’s been on all accounts the most successful one to pride yet.”

King says thousands have turned out for the 10-day festival, warmly supported by the Queenstown community. Formerly Gay Ski Week, the festival has been running for 20 years, and 2023 is the biggest one to date, with 50 events.

“[On Saturday], there was a Pride Park run, hundreds of people running around the lake and there’s rainbow flags everywhere. There was not one protester. Not one hate crime.

“On Friday night on the mountain, we had 2000 people dancing and singing with drag queens in the snow. That’s like a world first. That’s everyone from Queenstown. It wasn’t just Pride guys, it was kids, parents having the time of their lives.

“I think there’s a lot to celebrate.”

King also thanked the police and council for taking the incident seriously.

“We’re delighted by their response . . . that it wasn’t brushed under the carpet, and they take the safety of our people seriously.

Queenstown Police have embraced Winter Pride, King says, making all the attendees feel safe.

Lacking some girl power

It seems the Wakatipu could be lacking a bit of girl power when it comes to some traditionally male-dominated sports, but there are moves afoot to rectify that.

Primary-age girls playing rugby locally have dropped off markedly since 2018 and there’s a push to attract more girls into football, with cricket numbers slowly increasing each season.

Coaching Solutions director Emma Campbell says numbers dropped from about 60 girls playing rugby in 2018 to 30 last year and about 18 from the basin this year. Just 10 girls play among the 200 boys for Wakatipu Rugby Club with eight girls playing among Arrowtown’s 100 junior boys. “We worked really hard, but we lost the drivers of the junior girls’ programme,” says Emma, who says she’d like to see more regional support for junior girls’ development from the Otago Rugby Union too. “The 30 junior girls we had last year were fed into the Wakatipu High School teams so the school had a senior and junior team.” However, fewer girls this year means the school combines with Mount Aspiring College. Four Wakatipu senior girls made the Under 16 Otago Country representative team.

There are some proactive dads out there though, some who say their daughters would be keen but want to play with other girls. “Girls are keen to play touch rugby, but it’s up to us to get them through to Rippa Rugby in the schools then transferring to tackle,” says Craig Anderson, of Wakatipu Rugby Club. “There’s currently no competition for them in Central Otago.” The club has 10 girls Under 9 in 217 junior players. Assistance wasn’t forthcoming this season but the club hopes to start a girls’ competition itself next year. Southern Football officials have recognised that junior girls numbers are very low in the Wakatipu and recently hired Emma to help boost female participation.

The NZ Football-supported Fantails programme, which Emma has been promoting in local schools, kicks off today (Tuesday, Sept 5) offering a fun environment in which to learn football skills on the wave of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Girls as young as four are enrolling with the extra funding provided after the success of the World Cup to help get young girls into the game. Local club officials are expecting junior girls numbers to grow next season after huge interest in that event.

In an added boost to attract young girls the Queenstown Women’s Premiers won the Southern Football League recently, and some of these senior players will act as role models to the Fantails.

There’s at least one rising young female starlet in the wings with eight-yearold Eva Turnbull from Shotover Primary already turning heads on the field.

Queenstown Associated Football Club president Simon Couldstone says in contrast, the Wanaka club is believed to have almost 100 junior girls currently registered. “They’ve just been really organised over the last few years. Queenstown can learn from them and put programmes like Fantails in place,” he says. Queenstown has 300 youth members, only 19 girls. “Our goal is to get to 50 or 100.”

Cricket’s faring much better with finally enough to form an all girls’ team and not play with boys. New recruits start with soft ball programmes from five until nine then hard ball, occasionally playing in Alexandra or Wanaka. “We have three hard ball teams, plus a Wakatipu High School team, and a soft ball

team, totalling about 50 girls with 25 to 30 percent of our junior membership girls which isn’t bad,” says Emma.

She’d love to see junior girls’ cricket grow regionally with only one Alexandra all girls team and a few girls scattered among the other boys’ teams. Volunteers and parents work hard and she’d like to see some of the umbrella associations step in to help with junior development.

“It’s critical to give them these sporting opportunities when they’re young and offer alternatives.”

Local junior girls’ football and cricket coach Scott Julian says it’s important for some families that games don’t clash with netball, and adding Sundays or weeknights can be a big commitment for parents. There’s some amazing work being done locally to encourage young girls but there’s a definite need for girls’ competitions at various age-group levels in all codes, he says. “Football has achieved this at Under 7-8 level with the first ever all girls competitionQueenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell and Alexandra all fielding teams.”

Fantails starts Tuesday, Sept 5 – 3.30pm – Queenstown Events Centre. To register email Emma on emma@coaching-solutions.co.nz

Senior girls rugby players from Wakatipu High and Mount Aspiring College combined this year to form this team to play in local competitions.

Active travel boost for Arthurs Point

Arthurs Point residents will soon have a safer way to walk, cycle or scoot into Queenstown.

Work to upgrade the key commuter route from McChesney Bridge into Queenstown is set to start on 4 September.

General Manager Property and Infrastructure Tony Avery said the upgrades would improve the trail, making it a safer and more viable option for people to leave the car at home and try different ways of traveling into town.

“The existing rural trail along Gorge Road will be upgraded to asphalt and chipseal, then link into the Matakauri wetlands trail which will receive surfacing and drainage upgrades but remain unsealed,” Avery says.

“We’ll also be sealing the road shoulder that runs adjacent to the Matakauri wetlands to provide a more direct, sealed surface for commuters, in addition to the gravel path through the wetlands. The route then recommences along Robins Road adjacent to the recreation ground, finishing at the intersection of Memorial and Camp Street.”

The urban section of Gorge Road is outside of the scope for this project but funding will be considered through the upcoming Long Term Plan process.

As with any large construction project, there will be some disruption around the construction areas while the work is underway.

In particular, parts of the Recreation Ground Carpark will temporarily close on 4 September to allow for the construction of retaining walls to support a wide shared pathway along a section of Robins Road. Drivers will be directed to alternative carparking options such as Lakeview or Boundary Street. Regular progress updates will be provided on the QLDC Facebook page and project webpage www.qldc.govt.nz/arthurs-point-active-travel.

The project is funded by the Transport Choices package, as announced in December 2022. Transport Choices is part of the Waka Kotahi Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF) programme, which aims to demonstrate what’s possible for communities nationwide by quickly providing people with healthier, more affordable, and safer transport choices that are good for us, and for the environment.

The project is expected to be complete by June 2024.

Fulton Hogan has been appointed as the contractor to complete the upgrade.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa reelected with 52.6% of the vote

The Zimbabwean President was re-elected for a second and final fiveyear term last week, following another troubled vote in the southern African country with a history of violent and disputed elections.

An opposition party spokesperson said within minutes of Mnangagwa being declared the winner that they would reject the results as “hastily assembled without proper verification.”

Mnangagwa’s victory meant the ZANU-PF party retained the governmental leadership it has held for all 43 years of Zimbabwe’s history since the nation was re-named following independence from white minority rule in 1980.

Zimbabwe has had just two leaders in that time, long-ruling autocrat

Robert Mugabe and Mnangagwa.

Hawaii power utility takes responsibility for first fire on Maui

Hawaii’s electric utility acknowledged its power lines started a wildfire on Maui but faulted county firefighters for declaring the blaze contained and leaving the scene, only to have a second wildfire break out nearby and become the deadliest in the U.S. in more than a century.

Hawaiian Electric Company released a statement Sunday night in response to Maui County’s lawsuit blaming the utility for failing to shut off power despite exceptionally high winds and dry conditions. Hawaiian Electric called that complaint “factually and legally irresponsible,” and said its power lines in West Maui had been de-energized for more than six hours when the second blaze started.

‘Stolen’ totem pole prepared for return to Canada

On the ground floor of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, one of its biggest displays is being carefully prepared for a 4,200-mile journey to its original home.

A 36ft (11m), one-tonne totem pole will be returned to the Nisga’a Nation, one of the indigenous groups in what is now known as British Columbia on the west coast of Canada.

The totem pole has been in Scotland for almost a century since it was sold to the museum by Canadian anthropologist Marius Barbeau. However, Nisga’a researchers say it was stolen without consent while locals were away from their villages for the annual hunting season.

Meta Disrupts ‘Spamouflage’

Thousands of fake Meta social media accounts with ties to an alleged Chinese disinformation network were removed recently, according to Meta’s quarterly security report. Officials believe the network is the largest to infiltrate its stable of social media sites—which includes Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—in the company’s history of mitigating such threats.

The company was first aware of this specific network late last year, which it claims is part of a broader influence apparatus experts dubbed “Spamouflage” in 2019. Meta believes the network’s operators, which it claims are dispersed throughout China, are directed and supported centrally. The network frequently pushes spam-like content appearing to criticize the US while supporting China; according to a 2021 report, some of its content was amplified by authentic users with substantial followings.

NUESTRA VOZ

Amamos a Queenstown.

Blackadder banter comes to the stage

Remarkable Theatre will perform Blackadder The Golden Age at Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall from this Thursday. The show is inspired by the BBC series, written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. It’s a mash-up of the best characters and scenes from the much-loved programme.

The performance will transport Lord Edmund Blackadder, Baldrick, Lord Percy, Queenie, and other wonderfully ridiculous characters from the small screen to the stage, making for comedy gold. Melanie Grindell, who is the production manager at Remarkable Theatre, describes the show as very tongue-in-cheek and not PC at all.

“Hopefully it will lead to lots of laughter as the characters go about their silliness,” says Melanie. “Blackadder, who sits on the Queen’s court, ends up meeting a girl disguised as a boy, which is Bob, and ends up falling in love and trying to navigate the world when he loves someone that he doesn’t think he should. Meanwhile, the Queen is always up to her silly tricks and playing practical jokes on people, and Blackadder owes the wrong kinds of people money, which leads him into all sorts of trouble.”

The fast-paced show is based on season two of the series in Elizabethan England. The whole team at Remarkable Theatre are busy at work bringing everything to life, including some fantastic costumes, great makeup and beautifully unique sets. They chose to do Blackadder as they wanted to do something that was well-known and allowed for a bigger cast.

“We’ve been exploring quite a few options and then we talked to Angela Neal, who’s our director from Invercargill, and she mentioned to us that she’s been involved in the production of Blackadder down there and asked if we’d be interested. We looked at the script – which has been adapted from a TV series by Jason Fraser, and we have permission from the original writers, Ben Elton and Richard Curtis, to perform – and it looked like lots of fun.”

Greg Dorn has been with Remarkable Theatre for around 10 years now and will play Kate’s Father and Prince Ludwig on the night. His background includes attending acting school in London and spending time in Sydney working in film. He was excited when he heard this year’s production would be Blackadder and says that Ludwig is his favourite character as it’s fun to play the baddies.

“I play Kate’s father – if you recall the TV series, Kate disguises herself as a boy to get some work in London, and ends up working for Blackadder,” says Greg. “I’m her father, and I didn’t really want her going off to London – I had much better plans for her – a money-making plan that involves some unsavoury stuff for her, but I was more concerned about the money.

“And my other character is Count Ludwig, the indestructible, who’s a German count that had kidnapped Blackadder later in the play and tortured him and his friends in order to get access to the Queen and to take over the whole throne of England. I’m full of cunning plans and am a ghastly chap.”

The cast have been rehearsing for the past few months, and many of them have an English background; as Greg puts it, Blackadder is a part of their heritage. The show is R13 with some adult themes and is expected to be a fun and funny night. Melanie says that it doesn’t matter if you’re not super familiar with the Blackadder TV show, too.

UTLET

Listen now: Beer anyone?

“It’s comedy that was written in the 80s but is still relevant to today. It’s still the same things that people can relate to – money worries, keeping up appearances, having problems with your workmates, boss treating you like rubbish. The storyline itself is quite relevant and we’ve been having lots of fun in rehearsals just cracking up. I don’t know the show as well as a lot of other people, but I don’t think it matters – you don’t have to be a massive fan to come and see it,” says Melanie.

Blackadder The Golden Age will run from 7:30pm from Thursday 7 – Saturday 16 September, with a matinee performance on Sunday 10 September. Tickets are available on Eventfinda at the QR code, and more information on the show and cast can be found at remarkabletheatre.org.nz

My Life Story

ANN JONES

From the mouths of babes

Her white starched veil, bowling shoes and stockings – seams strictly straightened down the back, and armed with ‘Ooky Spooky’ ghost puppets, was a scary enough sight for most schoolchildren. Little wonder it took much cajoling and consoling to get her child clients into her office, renowned as ‘The Murder House’, and into that formidable tilt-back chair.

Ann Jones was Queenstown’s school dental nurse for almost 20 years, based at Queenstown Primary’s dental clinic and servicing the entire Wakatipu, even Glenorchy. “I’d stay at the Glenorchy Hotel, driving up the dirt road with my wee MGB sports car packed full of dental equipment, all but the chair.” She needed a new muffler after each trip.

Born in rural South Canterbury, when she was 11 the farming family of five moved to North Canterbury, where Ann loved basketball and tennis – house captain at Rangiora High School.

A dental nurse came to speak to students and her decision was made. Training in Christchurch in the early 1960s, the dental nursing hostel – the 25-room ‘McLean’s Mansion’, was strictly ruled over by Matron - Miss Mainwaring. Weeknight 6pm curfews meant only two girls with special permission got to see The Beatles perform in the city, but Ann got a wave from the Warner’s Hotel balcony. Her roommate was met at the top of the fire escape late one night by an angry, large and imposing Miss Mainwaring after sneaking out to meet her boyfriend. Strictly no men were allowed past the front door. “The Lincoln College boys took great delight in tying up their mates and tossing them inside the foyer onto the antique couch,” she grins. “We weren’t allowed anywhere near them.”

Graduating in 1966, Ann was posted to Invercargill, then moved to Nightcaps School in 1968, beginning a 33-year dental nursing career. About then the authorities became aware that mercury, used for fillings, could be dangerous. “We had to put sulphur on the floor once a term.” Until then they’d mix the mercury fillings with a mortar and pestle, then have to ‘ring the mercury out’. “We used copper amalgam mixed with mercury for baby teeth, which we had to soften over a meth flame. It probably was dangerous for us to be mixing the mercury, but we didn’t know.” Local anesthetic was only used for extractions until the mid-70s, then fillings.

Not surprisingly, when she arrived in a classroom to get a child all schoolbooks were rapidly raised to cover faces so she wouldn’t choose them as she scanned the room.

Sometimes what she saw in them was equally alarming – preschoolers and new entrants who’d been given fruit juice from babies’ bottles with ‘absolutely rotten’ teeth. “They’d be referred out for general anesthetic, removal of all teeth, which sometimes led to orthodontic work later.”

There was much more education back then for children and parents, dental nurses also helping mothers through Plunket.

Ann became proficient at creating distraction puppets like snowmen, fairies and ‘Ooky Spookies’ from cotton wool rolls and gauze.

After she and first husband Rod married and had daughter Justine, Ann snuck the baby into the Nightcaps School Dental Clinic while she worked. “It was highly illegal, but the dental inspector stayed at the nearby Ohai Hotel and the publican would phone me to say she was coming.” Strict uniform protocol was paramount at these times.

Here she met Mel and Sylvia Gazzard, who’d both later become long-time principal, and teacher, in Queenstown. They introduced the Joneses to skiing and they were hooked, daughter Justine becoming a NZ representative ski racer after they moved here in 1980.

They quickly switched from Southland to Wakatipu Ski Club. It was expensive sending a teen to compete and train overseas so Ann worked school holidays and weekends, first at Country Lodge, then in the McLean’s fashion stores. A keen runner, in 1983 Ann won the Queenstown Marathon veteran’s section. She also won gold, silver and bronze in the NZ Masters Skiing Championships GS during the 1990s. Whisky was served pre-race, Gluhwein at lunch. “It was very social.”

Ann was president of The Dinner Club too – a social group with guest speakers.

She turned retailer in 1999, buying Forget Me Not – a popular gift and nicknack shop in Arrowtown which she owned for 10 years, Olive the dog an instore attraction.

Ann then worked for other Arrowtown retailers and a café before moving to Bannockburn with late husband Peter in 2010, commuting for work until 2014. She still works part-time in Cromwell at 76.

In recent years Ann’s also been moonlighting with her screen debut, starring in a number of TV commercials and scoring a speaking part in a Kiwi short film to be shot locally in spring.

Bid for billionaire’s bolthole heads to court

US billionaire Peter Thiel’s bid for a sprawling luxury lodge overlooking Lake Wānaka is headed to the Environment Court.

Mediation between Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and Thiel’s company Second Star Ltd had not resolved all issues between parties and the case will now go to a hearing.

A hearing will likely be set for early next year, Environment Court case/ hearing manager Chrissie McKee told the Wānaka App.

Independent commissioners rejected Thiel’s application last year, saying in the ruling that it would be “inappropriately dominant” in the Outstanding Natural Landscape (ONL) setting.

The tech entrepreneur had sought consent for a series of buildings designed to sleep up to 30 people on his $13.5M Damper Bay property.

They were designed by Tokyo Olympic stadium architects Kengo Kuma & Associates.

The extravagant, multi-building retreat with multiple pools, libraries and spa facilities, would be “plainly visible”, commissioners said. Their decision, made on behalf of QLDC, followed an earlier recommendation by council planner Sarah Gathercole to refuse the proposal.

Thiel’s 193ha property, which he purchased in 2015 for $13.5M under Second Star Ltd, is located off Wānaka-Mt Aspiring Road.

QLDC media and channels advisor Sam White said the council could not provide comment on the topic.

“All discussions in the mediation, and since, and on this topic generally, are subject to confidentiality in accordance with the Environment Court’s directions and processes,” he said.

Airports push ahead with plans

Nearly seven million passengers a year could be flying through Queenstown and Central Otago airports in the coming decades, if two airport companies have their way.

Last week, Christchurch Airport unveiled more detail for its controversial proposal to build an airport in Tarras, the small Central Otago farming community just 85km away from Queenstown.

Its runway would be up to 2.6m long, the third longest in New Zealand, and capable of accommodating long-haul flights from the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, coming in over Cromwell or the Lindis Valley. There could be 3.7m passenger movements (arrivals and departures) through the airport by 2050.

Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC), meanwhile, has its own plans, aiming to increase passenger movements through its airport from 2.4m a year to 3.2m by 2032.

That’s part of its wide-ranging masterplan, which includes upgrades to the airfield, including a parallel taxiway and relocation of small aircraft and helicopters, along with safety, transport and terminal upgrades.

On Thursday, QAC revealed there had been more than 230 submissions on the draft masterplan. While there was support for elements, many submitters either questioned or outright opposed growth in passenger numbers and scheduled flights.

QAC chief executive Glen Sowry considers the growth “moderate” and says it strikes a balance between the desires of different sections of the community, the business community and stakeholders, some of who are anti-growth, some pro-growth.

“Our view is we have listened to and responded to the expectations of our majority shareholder and the community, through our strategic plan and hence our masterplan,” Sowry says.

The majority shareholder is Queenstown Lakes District Council. The QAC board has made a commitment to QLDC to only expand within existing noise boundaries for the next decade.

Sowry points out that Queenstown actually has a longer runway and more land than Wellington Airport, which accommodates three times as many passengers.

“It’s not that Queenstown Airport couldn’t accommodate the growth, physically it could. But we’ve listened to the views . . . and are moderating

Free as a bird - Continuing from page 2

Spain’s Thibault Magnin, an experienced slopestyle and big air competitor, finished a close second on 95 points, competing in his first freeride event. Local freeride coach Joseph Pickering was the third-place finisher, picking up 92 points with a clean, fast run and the biggest air of the day. Some 96 athletes from 18 different countries lined up for the ski and snowboard comps.

The North Face Frontier typically attracts a strong international field as competitors look to bank early season points, in the Freeride World Qualifier. Competitors were judged on the technicality of their line, use of the natural features, fluidity, technique, and for ‘air and style’ including the size of any jumps, tricks and grabs.

The women’s ski category saw one of the tightest finishes between the podium placegetters. Jenna Keller (SUI) took the top spot with 92 points,

growth as a result. That said, our view is that discussion around what optimal visitation numbers should be, most appropriately sits with QLDC.”

But that’s not the view of Christchurch International Airport Limited (CIAL), which itself ultimately owned by Christchurch City Council.

CIAL chief strategy officer Michael Singleton told RNZ the demand is there, and the Tarras proposal will take up the slack.

“We acknowledge the Queenstown area has current capacity constraints on infrastructure which is reflective of how, as a country, we haven’t planned our infrastructure well for the future,” Singleton tells RNZ. “This is at the heart of what our project is looking to overcome.

“It’s worth noting that a new airport doesn’t create the demand for travel, it just serves it. The demand to travel to Central Otago will continue to grow even if air capacity is constrained. Well publicised future investment in attractions and accommodation in Queenstown and Wānaka reflects that growth is being accommodated for.”

Singleton’s position is the demand will fly into other airports and drive here instead.

On Friday, Southern Lakes regional tourism organisations (RTOs) Destination Queenstown (DQ) and Lake Wānaka Tourism (LWT) issued a joint statement condemning the Tarras proposal, saying they share their communities’ concerns about “over-tourism”

Tarras, they say, will “drive an increase in visitor numbers to the region on a scale never seen before, due to the huge capacity increase enabled by wide body jets, capable of flying directly from long haul markets”.

That’s inconsistent with the recent destination management plan, which seeks to manage the impact and make the industry regenerative “ensuring we are thriving not just economically but also socially, culturally and environmentally”.

The RTOs reject CIAL’s claims about people coming by road instead and say the infrastructure doesn’t exist to cope with projected Tarras capacity.

“An increase in numbers on that scale would put more pressure on the already stretched visitor infrastructure in Queenstown and Wānaka.”

And, the Southern Lakes region would bear that burden without direct economic benefit from ownership of the airport. QAC last month paid a record annual dividend to QLDC of $11.66m. Tarras profits “would go out of the region”.

“Queenstown Airport enables sufficient connectivity to the world; it underpins our economic development ambitions and enables us to welcome visitors.”

hitting a 360 in her run, with Zanna Farrell (AUS) second on 90, and Avery Bernholtz (USA) third on 88.

Sweden’s Johanna Lindqvist was the standout rider in the women’s snowboard field, picking out a rock feature at the top of the course and hitting it straight on, landing solidly and boosting her way down the rest of the course with well linked turns.

“I had eyed up that cliff and I just got so much speed, it felt good, I’m very hyped,” Lindqvist says. “I’ve been pushing myself to do more drops and it’s always nice to stomp a run.”

Noémie Equy (France) finished in second and Jaimie Figueira (Canada) third. Germany’s Kilian Welschof won the men’s snowboard comp with 80 points, with Jared Yanez (USA) second place and Austen Brown (Canada) third.

The North Face Frontier 4-star was due to take place on Monday, as Winter Games NZ continues.

Why Mental Health Awareness Week is everyone’s business

That’s where Mental Health Awareness Week comes in. This year’s annual week-long focus on mental wellbeing is being held from 18 - 24 September, and it’s a chance for local businesses and organisations to think about how they might do more to support the mental wellbeing of their staff.

Let’s face it. Looking after your mental health isn’t rocket science. Just like we all have physical health, we all have mental health and no, mental health is not mental illness. It’s a fact of life that mental health is a part of who you are and once you realise that you can start looking after it.

It’s actually pretty easy to support your mental wellbeing. In fact you might not even know you are doing it. That habit you have of escaping to your garden at the weekend? Good for your mental health. Going out for a bike ride after work? Good for your mental health.

But what’s great is when you do know what supports the wider mental health of your staff, team and community. Now you’re really talking.

If you run a business in Queenstown or manage a team I want you to read this next sentence and then pause and read it again: Reduced mental health is the primary cause of lost working days and productivity loss in most Westernised countries.(Source ACC)

Got your attention yet?

The message is pretty clear, if you are interested in running a successful business or operation then you need to be taking the mental health or your workforce seriously. But what we hear a lot from local businesses is they don’t know how to support the mental health of their staff or where to start.

Women’s Fly Fishing Forum

The Wakatipu Anglers Club is a dedicated promoter of inclusive fly-fishing activities for men and women and strives to encourage greater participation of women in our rich environment. Members get access to a club hut, club boat, organised overnight outings and a social community of fly fishing enthusiasts.

The club is holding a free Women’s Fly Fishing Forum on September 9, 2023 to coincide with International Women’s Fly Fishing Day. The forum is designed to encourage and celebrate women into the sport of fly fishing and takes place at the Queenstown Events Centre from 10am to 2pm. This event seeks to change the assumption that fly fishing is a sport for men, by celebrating the achievements of women in the sport and invite more women to explore the joy that is fly fishing.

The Women’s Fly Fishing Forum is open to women of all ages, and offers an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. The information packed day includes fly tying demonstration, casting clinics and guest speakers including Corina Jordan, CEO of Fish & Game NZ, Kristina Placko, Fishing Guide with Stray South and Mason Court, Otago Fish & Game Officer. There is, plenty of time for talking fishing, with equipment available for use and a team of experienced fly fishers will be on hand to offer guidance and advice.

For those new to the sport, it’s a great chance to learn about fly fishing in a supportive and encouraging environment. For those already acquainted with the sport, it’s an opportunity to share experiences, and help inspire the next generation of women fly fishers.

The Wakatipu Anglers Club are keen for more women members, but whether they choose to join the club or not, getting women into the sport is the primary goal.

Admission to the event is free and includes access to all activities, and a chance to win some great prizes!

For more information about the Women’s Fly Fishing Forum, please visit our Facebook page at Wakatipu Anglers Club NZ or Instagram @wakatipuanglers.

That’s why we’ve launched the Mental Health Awareness Week toolkit for Queenstown Lakes and Southern businesses and workplaces. The kit is free and it makes it easy to get staff and colleagues taking active steps to support their mental health at work. What’s more it’s fun and contributes to a culture that shows you care about your people, and their wellbeing. Plus there are opportunities to ‘give back ’to local mental wellbeing community projects too, so in this case everyone wins.

So if you haven’t downloaded it yet, you’ve got about 2 weeks to get going, your mental health will love you for it. Your staff might too.

Catalyst Trust Talks

The economy, foreign relations, causes of the New Zealand Wars, and extreme weather events with climate change – Catalyst Trust is bringing a broad range of topics to Queenstown over the next couple of months. Run entirely by volunteers, with generous support from The Rees Hotel Queenstown, events are free, with koha collected at the door for Queenstown’s KiwiHarvest. Their funding has been radically cut this year. In 2022, they rescued 120,000 kg of excess food from local supermarkets, producers and cafés so that instead of going to landfill, it became over 340,000 meals for in-need community members.

What is an economy for public good? New Zealanders’ perspectives

Could the global economic system be transformed to one that puts people and planet first? And if so, how would it work?

These were among questions Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa country lead Gareth Hughes asked community workshops around NZ, including one run here by Catalyst. WEAII is a global collaboration and NZ is one of 15 national hubs. Ambassadors include Kate Raworth, author of ‘Doughnut Economics’.

Gareth will share the collective findings with politicians preelection and with us on Thursday, September 21. Register with the code.

Perceptions of Asia: What do New Zealanders know about the region considered most consequential to our future?

What do New Zealanders know about Asia, and what worries them? Friend and threat perceptions? How do young New Zealanders see and connect with the region? These are among questions the Asia New Zealand Foundation is researching in the longestrunning study of NZ – Asia relations.

ANZF director Suzannah Jessep, a veteran diplomat and international affairs adviser, will present their latest headline findings, answer questions and lead discussions about what these findings might mean for NZ’s future on Sunday, September 24. Register with the code.

The ‘why’ of the New Zealand Wars

After a series of small wars in the 1840s, Māori and Pākehā appeared to be on the road to peace and prosperity. Why did this fall apart in 1860? And what is the significance of the First Taranaki War and Waikato War?

Prof Lachy Paterson’s Thursday, October 5, Catalyst Kōrero will focus on the causes of these two conflicts; whether it was the insatiable Pākehā desire for land, the Crown’s quest to establish a more substantive sovereignty, or something in between? Register with the code.

Further event details are on Catalyst’s Facebook, website and Eventbrite pages. All held 6-7.30pm, at The Rees.

READER FEEDBACK

Response to airport editorial

Kudos to Lakes Weekly Bulletin for at least partly questioning QAC’s rosy glow annual report. But Scott Stevens has obviously forgotten the crux of the sale of 24.99% of QAC to Auckland International Airport.

It was not a “muppet rogue council” that sold it – it was the aggressive rogue QAC board, treating councillors like muppets.

QAC kept their sale secret from Council (except the CEO and mayor, apparently sworn to secrecy) until one hour before they publicly announced it.

And to get around the thorny problem of it being against their Constitution to sell existing shares without council’s approval, they created extra ones to sell to AIA. Clever, maybe, but ethical?

We agree with LWB that we categorically need to hold on to community control. The 75.01% shareholding is critical to this, as it guarantees council’s “super majority shareholder” control over QAC.

Simplifying the legalese, this means that our councillors can demand QAC meet council’s strategic objectives – both financial and nonfinancial – and QAC must comply.

Sadly, our councillors have left the whip in QAC’s hands to date, compliantly following persistent advice from their executive staff to keep their sticky beaks out of QAC’s business.

Despite the fact that QAC’s business, as a council-controlled trading organisation under the Local Government Act, is actually our council’s business.

Our councillors’ mandated job, both as our political representatives and in its governance role of QAC, is to promote our community’s four wellbeings. One way it can do this is through setting strategic objectives for QAC.

Such as always operating within existing air noise boundaries, not just for the next nine years. Otherwise, QAC’s current “modest” growth rate will land us with exactly the same passenger numbers our community has so vehemently rejected since 2018.

Heck, even the Chamber of Commerce and major tourism businesses rejected this growth rate in the face of all the downstream over-tourism negatives we were already experiencing in 2018.

As Scott suggests, the very least councillors can do is enshrine council’s supermajority in the QAC Constitution.

When Mr Theelen and the rest of his executive team fight back against that idea, as they no doubt will, we suggest councillors remember the reason why we now only own 3/4 of Queenstown Airport.

We should also remember that when councillors called for a review of the QAC Constitution, to ensure proper council governance, the fox was put in charge of the henhouse. Council CEO Mike Theelen got QAC to do the review. QAC declared it “fit for purpose.” Mr Theelen told councillors that was good enough for him.

Council’s executive team always talk up the need to maintain a good relationship and trust with the QAC board.

There’s a wise saying in such circumstances: ‘trust but verify’.

Both council and our community can better trust an aggressive QAC board to not go rogue if the legal guardrails to ensure they do the right thing are firmly put in place first.

PS: Scott, I look forward to LWB fact-checking QAC’s fine words on environmental responsibility over coming years … there is little of substance promised.

QLDC Libraries Librarian Profile

Kia Ora! My name is Lyndsey. I joined Queenstown Library as a Library Assistant in 2018 – my first ever time working at a library! It was a dream come true for me - one year on I was thrilled to become a permanent part of the team, assisting the Children’s Librarian with the delivery of children’s programmes.

My reading genre of choice is most often Thrillers, I enjoy an unexpected twist at the end!

Happy to make recommendations to anyone who is also interested when they are next in the library.

The Next Everest – Jim Davidson

I’ve always had an interest in Everest - its powerful presence fascinates me and makes me want to learn about people’s personal experiences, and what motivates them to take the first step. Jim Davidson tells this story from his perspective as a climber during the mountain’s biggest disaster, and as someone well qualified in geology and environmental science. He explains how his knowledge helped him get through, along with the people around him and those he had left at home keeping him strong.

Anne Frank’s Diary – The Graphic Adaption: Ari Folman

I have read the diary of Anne Frank multiple times in my life, and I was really drawn to this Young Adult adaption – it is the only graphic biography of the diary authorized by the Anne Frank Foundation. The illustrator has created a beautiful and powerful portrayal of Anne’s inner thoughts and feelings throughout her traumatic experiences. While it’s a much shorter version due to the nature of the graphic adaption, it does use real text from her diary and the illustrations speak volumes.

Grown Ups – Marie Aubert

This was a great short story (only 154 pages long) and a modern take on a woman’s journey into her 40s, and society’s opinions on where she should be at this stage in her life. Ida has just turned 40 and is beginning to panic about whether she will ever become a mother – while navigating a career, and a dysfunctional family. Humorous, while also dark in parts.

Plumdog – Emma Chichester Clarke

A very charming story told entirely from the perspective of Plum – a dog and much-loved pet to Emma. With laugh out loud moments, the reader can enjoy a day in the life of this happy whoosell (a whippet mixed with a Jack Russell and poodle). This book caught my attention around the same time that I had just welcomed a new puppy into my own family, so I found it very relatable – and I believe many dog lovers out there will too. The illustrations by Emma Chichester Clarke are stunning throughout, and I couldn’t wait to read the next book following Plums adventures.
